You sighed as you looked out the flap of your tent. A chill ran over you as the cold wet wind whipped your face. Quickly jumping out and closing your tent, you turned and began jogging across the compound. You pulled your jacket tight around your body as you squinted your eyes.

Your vision became blurry as the rain covered your glasses. Slowing down to a walk, you lifted your hand to block the rain as you made your way blindly towards the mess tent.

Loosing your balance as you slid through a muddy spot, you let out an annoyed sigh.

"Having trouble?"

Looking up at the familiar voice, you saw a figure approaching. You didn't need to see him, to know BJ was standing in front of you.

You reached out blindly. "Ever tried to walk while looking through a glass of water?"

You heard him chuckle as he came to stand beside you, looping his arm through yours. "Allow me."

Finally making it to the mess tent, you took your glasses off as you got inside, shaking the water from them as you wiped your face. Noting the crowded mess tent, you figured everyone was too afraid to make the trip back to their tents in the storm.

Following BJ, you sat down beside him at a table with Hawkeye, Potter, Radar and Margaret. The table was crowded with others, causing you and BJ to be squished together, his hand was looped around your side, holding you close.

As you wiped off your glasses, Potter looked over at you. "So, decided to swim over huh?"

You smiled and glanced down at the food on everyone plates. "Oh, you know me sir, no wind nor rain can keep me from-" you paused as you watched Hawkeye pick up something unidentifiable up with his fork, "-whatever the hell that is."

Te others chuckled as Hawkeye gestured with his fork. "Meatloaf."

You rose your brow. "I think I'll pass."

"Oh, come on, you gotta eat something." BJ said as he moved to stand up, bringing you with him. You wandered over to the food and he gestured at the options. "I'm sure there something somewhat edible here you can eat."

"Yesterday's dinner, today's lunch, or tomorrows breakfast?" You asked as you looked at the food.

BJ shrugged his shoulder with a smile. "Like I said, options."

You chuckled as you both got a tray of food and wandered back to the table. As you began to eat, everyone looked around as the loud sound of rain slowed to a gentle patter.

A chorus of pleased mummers sounded through the tent, as multiple people rose to leave quickly, in case the rain picked up again.

"You know, when you're safe and warm inside, the rains not so bad. Almost comforting in a way." Margaret said, as she sipped her coffee.

"Yeah, about as comforting as the wind that brought me here without me having to move my legs." Hawkeye scoffed.

Margaret rolled her eyes, but you smiled. "I agree Margaret. I love the rain."

"Even if it's like looking through a glass of water." BJ asked softly.

You smiled, "Yes, even then. Though, the mud puddle that almost took me out, I can live without."

"Oh, the puddles around the compound are a menace." Margret commented. "I slid three feet in one during yesterday's storm."

"I took a trip down the whole road this morning, surfed like I was on an ocean wave." Potter added on as he motioned with his hand.

"Thanks for the warnings." Hawkeye said as he rose. "I'll heed them as I wade my way back to the swamp."

As he began to move towards the exit, the rain began to pour heavily, as the wind picked up, whistling through the crack in the door.

Turning around, Hawkeye came and sat back down. "On second thought, might wait a bit."

"Right." Your voices rang out in unison.

Pulling a deck of cards from his shirt pocket he looked around. "Anyone for a game of blackjack?"

Just Sleepy

Pairing: B.J. Hunnicutt x fem!reader

Summary: You accidentally fall asleep with your head on B.J.’s shoulder. 

Warning: Description of fatigue

     It had been a long day of surgery. Ten hours, maybe twelve. Maybe twenty. You didn’t remember and you didn’t really care. You’d only lost a few wounded men, which was worth noting because you’d operated on hundreds in total. Everyone had taken shifts working and assisting. 

You hadn’t. 

     Maybe the opportunity hadn’t arisen. Maybe someone had offered and you turned them down. The one thing you could clearly recall about the day was the sensation of B.J.’s shoulder pressed against yours from time to time, his quiet voice asking you if you were all right to continue. You had always nodded yes, and passed him the tool he asked for. 

     “How’s she doing?” Hawkeye asked, his voice distant in the dark abyss you found yourself swimming in. 

     “Hard to tell.” B.J.’s voice. “She didn’t leave my side the whole time. Not even when I left my side to get food.” 

     “I thought she went with you.” Potter sounded concerned. 

     “She didn’t.” B.J. replied. He sounded concerned too. 

     Just when you were toying with the idea of blocking them all out and slipping further into the abyss the thing your head rested on moved, causing you to startle and open your eyes. You were in the changing room. Hawkeye, Potter and Winchester were all standing around you, their own fatigue seemingly forgotten as they looked at you. B.J. was beside you. You must have fallen asleep on his shoulder. The thought caused you to rub at your burning eyes in an attempt to conceal the rush of embarrassment flooding your face. 

     “Sorry, guys,” your voice sounded soft and scratchy. “How many more casualties?” You started to get up. 

     “Hold up now,” B.J. took you by the arm, keeping you beside him easily. 

     “Easy now, soldier.” Potter’s voice was unusually soft. His bedside voice. “We’re done with casualties. Stitched the last one up about an hour ago.” 

     “How’re you feeling?” Hawkeye asked. 

     “A superfluous question, Pierce, considering she’s clearly not feeling fine and dandy.” Winchester pursed his lips for a moment as he looked you over. “Exactly how do you feel?” 

     Hawkeye rolled his eyes. “Great question, Charles.” 

     “Too many doctors can ruin the soup, gentleman.” B.J. put a hand to your forehead, shushing you as you leaned into his hand, the sensation nearly sending you back to sleep. 

     “I hear ya, B.J.,” Potter straightened and sat back. “You take the lead on this. Make sure she gets some rest.” 

     “Come on, sweetheart.” B.J. slipped an arm around your shoulders. “I’ve got you.” 

     “I’m fine, I promise. I’m fine.” You tried to push him away as B.J. pulled your limp form into his arms. 

     B.J. shushed you, guiding your head to rest once more on his shoulder. “Go back to sleep.” 

     “I’m just sleepy.” You mumble, eyes falling shut once more. 

      “I know.” A smile tainted B.J.’s lips as he pressed a kiss to your forehead. “Just sleep.” 

     You did as he asked, slipping once more into the dark abyss of sweet, blissful sleep within the safety of B.J.’s arms.

Plea to M*A*S*H-obsessed Tumblr- can anyone help me find the highest quality version possible of this photo?

I am looking for the highest quality version of this photo as possible. Needs to be the whole thing- bodies, bike and all.

I've got the Suzy Kalter Complete Book of M*A*S*H, which has the image in it, but the quality is not ideal. If you have this book, and know how to get a high-res scan, it's on page 234/235.

The above version is 1536x2048. If anyone is crafty and create a high-resolution version of the image from Kalter's book (or another source I don't know about?? Kalter's book is the only place I've seen this photo in full) please let me know. I was around for the original run of the show, which means I'm not very techy and I have no idea what can and cannot be done with this image. But I also know there are lots of very talented fans out there who know what magic buttons to push and make it work.

I don't mean to be rude or offensive, I'm really just curious, are there any m/f ships you really like in mash or other fandoms?

oh that's not offensive in the least. i think what can get grating is when people are rude about "everything being about gay ships all the time" when i've made it pretty clear that there's a lot of gay stuff on my blog and if someone doesn't like it they can avoid me pretty easily.

so, a few things: 1) i'm relatively new to shipping and it doesn't rank high for me amongst things that draw me into a narrative or fandom - i am not dedicated to many ships in general.

2) even if i can logically 'see' a ship, i like to write smut so if i'm not turned on by the idea of these people fucking then i won't have more than a passing interest in them as a ship. i can be into a fic that uses sex to explore a dynamic without being into the sex itself, but it's not where the majority of my time is spent. that said, i've been in this MASH box so long I've produced fic i would've never dreamed of writing when i first started the show. see: infinite monkey theorum for why that might be lol.

in general, i wouldn’t say gender affects what appeals to me in a ship or a character. i like traphawk because of the nature of their relationship, not specifically because theyre both men, although in their case, the two of them being each other’s non trad partners is relevant to the anti-establishmentarian themes of the show. I dont think it would be half as effective, and therefore as impactful on me, if they were a het ship. their joint commitment to being little shits is why i love them so much together.

ANYWAY to actually answer your question: yes

within MASH i'm really into: margaret/trapper, ginger/trapper, almost any threesome with hawk/trap + a lady friend, hawkeye/kyungsoon

passing interest in: trapper/louise, hawkeye/margaret, hawkeye/bigelowe, hawkeye/carlye, klinger/soon lee, frank/margaret, ginger/oliver

highly situational crackships: trapper/carlye, BJ/aggie, hawkeye/kellye, trapper/kellye, hawkeye/peg hunnicutt

other het ships i'm into to varying degrees from very popular fandoms: katara/zuko (atla), rose/nine (dw), ten/martha (dw), ten/rose (dw), roy/riza (fma), batman/wonder woman (dc comics), nightwing/batgirl (dc comics), ollie/dinah (dc comics), rogue/gambit (marvel comics), han/leia (star wars)

... altho now that i think of it, the caveat with most of these is that with the exception of roy/riza, i don't think i endgame ship any of these. i won't not read a fic that implies they're endgame, i just don't think i really "OTP" any of these, I just enjoy them for various reasons.

honourable mention: mulder/scully - have not seen the x-files but i believe in them.

least favourite mash character?

I knew I was going to get this question so you're going to have to indulge my preamble. "Least favorite" does not mean "I dislike this character." It means "I like this character less relative to the other characters in this show." My baseline for MASH character is extremely high. I don't dislike any of them! But I like some more or less than others. So with that in mind.

BJ Hunnicutt

He's just less interesting to me than anyone else. I can say a lot of critical things about his writing and Mike Farrell's acting and I'm sure these things play into why I find him less interesting and care about him less. But at the end of the day, I just do. I don't have a lot of strong feelings about him. If he weren't popular in the fandom, I probably wouldn't think about him much. He's fine. But a lot of other characters either have an iron grip on my attention or make me laugh just by standing there and BJ doesn't do either of these things. There are some episodes where I do enjoy him a lot.

There are other episodes where I do situationally dislike him, and it's largely because the narrative usually takes BJ's side and validates him even when he's wrong, usually for the purpose of taking Hawkeye down a peg whether he deserves it or not. No matter how BJ behaves, the show never stops treating him as "the good guy" while Hawkeye is "the naughty one" in comparison and that's a dynamic that's always going to make me defensive of the naughty one.

Also I find his entire style from season 7 on fugly as hell. Especially the mustache, but not only the mustache. His haircut is a disaster and I hate most of his outfits, including the pink shirt. You wouldn't think this would matter but, well, I have a quirk about this. I struggle with certain seasons of The West Wing because the characters are styled in a way that's so viscerally ugly to me. I was devastated when The X-Files shifted to more early 2000s styles that I hated. I don't have this problem with real people but with TV characters... it's an issue, lol. I don't enjoy looking at him! Maybe I'm just too gay, who knows.

Ken Levine, one of the former head writers, admitted on his blog that he never thought they gave BJ the writing he deserved, and I think it shows. He's kind of all over the place.

The things I do like about BJ are not the things most of the fandom likes about BJ. He's an icon of midcentury Americana and I'm a freak for that period of history (it's so weird and fascinating to me) so I find a lot of potential in that. But he's more of a symbol than a blorbo. Then again, I've written more than one fic that's at least partially about him, so clearly there's something there! Like I said, I just like everyone else on the show more.

M*A*S*H - Viewguide, S4

Are you interested in the long-running anti-war situation tragicomedy M*A*S*H (1972-1983), but there are simply so many asterisks and so many episodes?

Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.

In which we lose two of the three top billed cast members and gain two new ones, a couple of the regular writers and directors also seem to cycle out, and in the ensuing slightly confused flooding of our previously steady stream, Frank is sinking like one of those water-logged stumps, someone seems intent on trying to keep Margaret from also getting dragged down by him through the approach “she’s just not around again, idk,” Radar is somehow swimming up-stream and now seems several years younger than he was when we started, and Alan Alda is piping up more and more to point out the banks and steer us into deeper waters, and if he’s also maybe altering our course just a little, let him.

Meanwhile, TIMESCALE: we learn in the opening scene that the first three seasons have timelooped for "just over a year” :) elated with this data :))

And so we enter M*A*S*H, Part Two:

M*A*S*H - Season 4 Recommended sequence

4x01-02 ‘Welcome to Korea, Parts 1 and 2' - Acting CO Frank Burns really thought he was going to get to mold their new doctor Hunnicutt into a Mini Frank, but did not account for Hawkeye Pierce, on a desperate scramble to the airfield, to pick him up while still reeling and reckless from having just lost his best friend, and in this, one of the most riveting figures BJ has ever encountered. TOO LATE, he got his hands and damage all over him already! Anyway I helplessly detailed exactly what goes down in these if you are BJ Hunnicutt (BJ…Hunnicutt) in my increasingly disclosing notes, so stay tuned for that.

4x04 ‘It Happened One Night’ - Not to be a weirdo and skip to Colonel Potter already being here, but this one is really good. This is one of my quiet favorites of the season. And I think this works so much better as the one to follow the two-part premiere actually. Hawkeye and BJ aren’t quite in sync yet—this is accurate. Hawkeye and Margaret continue to get more in sync—this too is accurate. Lots of Klinger (LOTS of Klinger) (hirsute…), Radar being so irritated with the chaotic bumbling of the new private is so funny, and you’re still getting a good impression of our small, forthright new CO: regular Army, but you know what? Maybe…our regular Army. And that could rule actually. Oh: AND EVERYONE’S SO COOOLD. My fav-orite!

4x05 ‘The Late Captain Pierce’

BJ: “For he was a jolly good fellow…” Hawkeye: “I was much too young to die.”

A clerical error renders Hawkeye legally dead. M*A*S*H x Catch22 for real, murder me. And, five episodes into the new season of an episodic sitcom and they were still letting Hawkeye be torn up over those he’s lost, and have this wholly new emotional register with his new friend BJ, way longer for both than I’d thought they would let him have. But y’know, Alda got to direct this one.

4x09 ‘The Kids’ - Great TV show setup: learn things about the characters by how they read bedtime stories to dislocated orphans. If you guessed, “oh yeah, and that’s gonna create the moment where Hawkeye finally lets himself start to fall in love with BJ,” you are a better guesser than I!! But man what a good choice. Alda. (Back in the chair.)

4x10 ‘Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?’ - I just adoooore Dr. Sidney Freedman. Any scene with Sidney in it: a balm. Here he returns for the episode in which the 4077th gets a wounded soldier who says he’s Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, Radar is now twelve.

4x16 ‘The Price of Tomato Juice’ - I was trying to describe the format of these kinds of chain of wants & favors episodes to Jody and she was like, oh, you mean it’s like the Deep Space Nine where Nog explains The Great River of Commerce. Yes exactly.

4x19 ‘Hawkeye’ - They gave the rest of the regular cast the week off and just had Hawkeye monologue with a concussion for 25 minutes, ambling around a Korean family’s farmhouse with surprisingly disconcerting candy apple red syrup creeping from his temple, live-narrating his own self-diagnosis, doing snippets of musical numbers, and just generally rambling as he tries to keep from fainting before his rescue arrives. A lot of oscillating between being about to keel over and quashing down his fear to put on a blithe front for an audience who can't even understand him, and a beautiful cow. In short, crafted for me special! I actually made this meme to explain to a friend why I was so undone by The Fabelmans (dork alert), but the thing is, it always worked because it was also about what it's about:

4x21 ‘The Novocaine Mutiny’ - Frank brings Hawkeye to trial for mutiny. He could, wildly, literally hang for this, but most of all: you bet there’s a Rashomon (scream).

4x25 ‘Deluge’ - I don’t know what to call these exactly, but they tend to do a couple of them a season. Usually, not always, they’re letter writing shows, with the letter narration forming the framework instead of an overarching plot, letting them do just a sequence of scenes somewhat related. Bullet point stories. This one however the scenes are intercut not with something else from the world of M*A*S*H, but actual historic footage from the period, in easily the most artistically experimental episode they’ve done yet. It’s all jarring juxtapositions of a very long surgical run with what was on TV back at home in 1952, with a jarring editing rhythm to match, which wasn’t fully working for me and then soooo working for me. Bit of an ‘O.R.’ echo, but so much odder and dreamier, in like a David Lynch way, and I think the sensation is well worth the list.

4x26 ‘The Interview’ - Anndd then you do this one next, which follows on the previous one almost like a brief bit of serialized storytelling. It’s all black & white and everyone is just being interviewed by a TV journalist about how they are (not) getting through it. At one point I paused to write this and let out a shaky yelp at discovering I was only 9 minutes in. At another point I had to pause to create my own break where there would normally be one just to let out mooore shaky sounds at an image Father Mulcahy had just described that will be lodged in my mind for the rest of my actual, actual life. Happy Season 4 Finale!!

Triad with “things you said when you thought i was asleep” 👀 -ypq

It's late, and Peg can faintly hear the wind whistling outside, though being curled up on the couch by the fire, warm and comfortable and less than sober, she can't bring herself to mind too much.

She's a bit giddy from the events of the past few days, and this is the first chance she's really had to breathe, to just be.

Her eyelids are getting heavier and heavier, sliding shut just long enough that she thinks she might start to doze, caught in the twilight of half-consciousness, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness.

She feels, vaguely, someone pull the afghan - the one hanging over the back of the couch - over top of her, and for a moment she thinks it's BJ.

But no, she catches a whiff of spicy cologne and pine-scented shampoo, her heart swelling at this unexpected tenderness from Hawkeye.

He's been acting, she thinks a little wryly, like a spooked horse around her, like he can't quite believe she's real (Peg felt the same way the first time she saw him but reality oh so very much measures up to what she imagined). Peg's only response has been to let him come to her, to not push before he's ready.

After all, she thinks, a sleepy smile spreading across her face, you can't ride a horse if you spook him.

"Is she asleep?" BJ asks softly, from the vicinity of the doorway, and Hawkeye must nod, because there's silence.

Then there's the creak of springs as Hawkeye must throw himself onto the other couch, and a few seconds later, the springs creak again as BJ joins him.

"She's really something, Beej," Hawkeye says, his voice low and affectionate, and it's very clear that he's not talking about Erin.

"She is," BJ says, matter of fact.

"You're lucky she wasn't in Korea with us," Hawkeye says, his voice rich with emotions that Peg doesn't dare examine too closely, "I'd have had to fight you for her."

BJ laughs, and a whole swarm of butterflies take flight in Peg's stomach. "Really?"

"She's incredible," Hawkeye insists. "I mean it, if she wasn't married, I'd have been a goner. Well, you know, more of a goner than I am now."

"You like her that much, Hawk?"

There's a beat, Peg's heart slamming against her ribcage.

And then, Hawkeye says gently, "I like both of you that much, Beej."

Peg might swoon a little, but she feels like she's straining to hear what BJ says, what he does with this admission, feeling like she's teetering on the edge of a cliff-

And then she falls off the couch, losing her balance and tumbling onto the rug with an ungraceful, breathless, "Fuck!"

When she opens her eyes, BJ and Hawkeye are both staring at her, pink in the face.

"How much of that did you hear?" Hawkeye asks, pink to the tips of his ears, as Peg sits up, her elbows smarting with rug burn.

"How much of what did I hear, darling?"

Hawkeye studies her face, as though he knows she's lying, but Peg just smiles at him.

"I think I'll go to bed," she says, walking past, placing a hand on BJ's shoulder as she leans down to kiss him. "Don't stay up too late, hey?"

"Night, Peggy."

"Night, darling."

And then she leans down and kisses Hawkeye on the cheek as she walks past.

Her breath hot on his ear, she whispers, "We like you that much too."

And then she leaves the room.

This is something I have literally never thought about before, congrats 😂

Usually my instinct is to just pair up my two favorites from a fandom (Sirius/Crowley, for instance), but I can't see Hawkeye/Sirius working in any capacity.

i don't hate the story they're telling through the flashbacks, i just hate how it's executed. i can see why they're doing it this way, so we're not actively suffering through the separation, it already happened. and the people want sam and dean together. but avoiding separating them has also made this really clunky and drag out by chopping it up and sprinkling it over so many episodes

anyway, resurrecting amelia's not-actually-dead husband certainly gives us all a guilt-free out of this whole fucking situation

Last Kiss

BJ had decided to drive off to work that morning. I made him his lunch, and kissed him “goodbye” as he left. I had a bad feeling, but chose to ignore it. That’s when everything went wrong.

He didn’t come home when he normally did. I though that there was just really bad traffic, so I waited.

I waited over an hour for BJ to come home. Just then, I got a knock on my door.

“Excuse me, sir, but are you doctor Benjamin Pierce?”

“Yes. Why?” I was starting to get scared.

“Your buddy, BJ Hunnicutt, was in a car accident and is currently in the hospital. You may want to come with us.”

I put my boots on, and let the officer drive me there. Naturally, I hate the system, but this is my best friend. I’d be lost without him.

We arrived at the hospital, I told the nurse my name, and she let me know where he was, and how bad of a shape he was in.

“BJ?”

“H-Hawkeye?”

“It’s me, Beej.” I forced myself to blink back the tears. I felt so bad having to see what state he was in.

“Hawkeye, I’m alive.”

I felt a tear fall, and he wiped my tears away. He kissed me quick. I knew he wouldn’t be around for much longer.

“I know, BJ.” I held onto his hand, and pulled up a chair.

“Are you okay, Hawk?”

“Yeah, I’m okay.” I had to lie.

“Okay. The nurses say that I’ll be okay.”

I heard that lie before. Over in Korea, we told our nurses to give our patients false hope in order to make them more comfortable. I couldn’t stand to see my best friend in this state.

A nurse called out to me from in the hall.

“Dr. Pierce?”

“Yes?”

“A word, please?”

I followed the nurse out of the room.

“Everything okay?”

“We just got his x-rays back, and it’s not looking too good. You’re his only emergency contact, and you’re listed in the paperwork as a trusted source, so I’ll let you have a look.”

I saw everything that was wrong. I knew he wasn’t going to pull through. She tried to make it seem less harsh that it was, but I knew the truth.

I stayed by BJ’s side all night, just hoping that he’d make it through the night. Unfortunately, at five minutes passed midnight, his heart monitor started beeping like crazy. The nurses came in, but it was too late. They left me alone with what was left of BJ, and I cried my eyes out.

“Oh BJ, I’m going to miss you. I-I never told you how much you truly meant to me, and I really should’ve. Maybe you wouldn’t be gone. What am I supposed to do without you? I-I can’t live knowing that you’re not here anymore.” I cried harder now. I kissed the top of his head and walked out of the hospital room, and headed back home. I decided to walk, and just let everything sink in.

I arrived home, closed the door, and slipped onto the floor. I held my knees to my chest, and cried. I couldn’t stop crying. I lost my best friend. The only man that I could truly love and trust. He’s gone now. What’s worse is the fact that I’m alone again. The house will be quieter, and I won’t be able to make meals for two.

I called everyone that was important to us, and told them what happened. I decided to ask father Mulcahy if he would like to do BJ’s service. He agreed.

A few weeks had gone by, and it was now time for BJ’s funeral. I was the first to arrive, and had some time alone with his casket.

“Beej? It’s me, Hawkeye. I know you probably can’t hear me, but I miss you. I miss you so much. The house has been so quiet since you’ve been gone, and I can’t live with the silence anymore. Oh god, I miss you. I’m going to miss you so much.”

I cried again, but when I heard a door open, I wiped away my tears.

“Hawkeye, it’s just me.”

Of course, father Mulcahy would be the one to see me like this.

“I’m sorry, my son.”

“I-it’s okay, father.”

“You’ve been crying. Want to talk about it?”

“I miss him. I waited for an hour for him to come home, I stayed with him at the hospital. I-I was the one in the room with him when he died…oh god…”

Father Mulcahy pulled me into a hug, and just let me cry. I didn’t want to let go.

“I’m so sorry, Hawkeye.”

“I-I know, father. Thank you.”

“Of course, my son.”

I decided to have a seat as I waited for the rest of the guests to arrive.

Everyone arrived five minutes apart from each other. I said my “hello’s” to everyone, and received many condolences. When it came time to the service, no one’s eyes were dry.

I helped Klinger, Radar, Colonel Potter, Charles, and Sidney carry BJ’s casket.

Everyone but Sidney and Mulcahy left.

I was given time to say my final “goodbye” to BJ alone, but Sidney and Mulcahy did want to talk to me afterwards.

“Hey Beej, I forgot to bring flowers, but I did bring you some of your favorite candies.” I set them on his grave, and traced his name with my finger. I hugged his tombstone, and cried.

“I’ll never be able to hug or kiss you again. I-I can’t come home to you laughing about whatever you were watching, or hear you hum whenever something tastes good, or hear you appreciate everything that the world gave you. I-I have to go back to being alone. And that’s the worst feeling in the world.” I cried harder again, and pulled away slowly.

“I was never able to tell you how much I truly loved and appreciated you. You made the world a lot brighter, and happier. I can’t go back to seeing how unforgiving this place is after you showed me all the good things.” I started sobbing harder. I couldn’t stop myself.

I left his grave, but before I could truly leave, I looked up at the skies and said, “Tommy? Henry? Please do me this one favor and watch over BJ for me, please. Take good care of him, too, now. He would’ve done the same for me.”

After I felt as though I said everything that I needed to, I met up with father Mulcahy and Sidney.

“Hawkeye, I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here for you.”

I thanked father Mulcahy as he hugged me and walked away.

Sidney sat me down, and decided to talk to me about survivor’s guilt, and other things. I listened intensely.

Sidney gave me a handful of tissues, and told me to “let everything out.” I did as I was instructed to.

“Hawkeye, I can’t help but get a sense that you loved BJ more than ‘just friends’.”

“You’d be correct. We couldn’t tell anyone over in Korea, so we kept it hidden. I miss him, Sidney.”

“I know, Hawkeye. He misses you too.”

We scheduled a couple of therapy sessions for the week, and parted ways. I walked home, and it started to rain.

As I walked inside my house, it didn’t feel like a home anymore.

I decided to just go to bed and deal with everything later.

I had a dream that BJ was in a field of flowers, waiting for me to join him. They were all different shades of pinks and yellows, and he looked so happy.

Hours passed, and I awoke to an empty bed. I noticed BJ’s clothes still in the closet, and I closed his side of the closet. I couldn’t bear to look at them.

I made myself something to eat, and went back to my room. I didn’t want to be around BJ’s things.

This was going to take some getting used to, and I know that I’m just going to hate it.

After I finished eating, I decided to go back to sleep again. There wasn’t any reason to really be awake anymore. I didn’t want to bother my dad, so I just decided that this was the best option. I lost count as to how many times I fell in and out of sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I could hear his laugh. It was always so warm and inviting. I have to get used to this. It’s always hard to start again, but I have to do for BJ. It’s what he would’ve wanted.
