In the books, Sirius's devotion to Harry is of course very deep, but it never translates to something physical. He only shakes Harry's end when he leaves his bedside in book 4, and in book 5 there is something resembling a hug, like twice...? As a dog he stood up his hind legs and front paws on harry's shoulders and a half hug after Christmas. Idk it sort of drives me crazy, because in the movies Harry and Sirius are so affectionate! That first hug when Harry arrives in Grimmauld!! Gary and Dan had an amazing chemistry that other actors were jealous of, they mirrored the book characters, so it palpable on screen, the few scenes Gary is in at all at least.
So, what do you make of this? Do you in musing for art imagine a more affectionate relationship between Harry and Sirius? Maybe if Sirius survived the war? Molly's hug in book 4 was a poignant moment but imo that should have been a moment between Sirius and Harry. Sirius already says he expected something catastrophic to happen to Harry in the third task, that's what he stutters when Harry comes in with Dumblebore. So he is literally afraid of his godsons life and it still shows of course, Sirius staying at Harry's side was very beautifully written, like the devotion is clear, but I am foaming at the mouth for more affection between them in canon? Platonic, not shipping. So between the movies and the books Im just kinda torn what's better
It's more a rant than an ask, sorry lol, but if you have any input I'd he so stoked to read it. Not many peeps in the fandom even give Sirius and Harry any time of day, nvrmind even understand what they had (which also drives me kinda nuts but ok)
Ohhhh, anon, you’ve come to the right spot! Mostly because I love them. I would say that 80% of my fandom interest is just Sirius being a dad to Harry.
To your question, I don’t think one is better than the other. Each has their purpose. Let me share my thoughts:
1. I am soft for movie Sirius and Harry’s affectionate touching. However. The dynamics of their relationship were NOT mirrored from the books, which…is fine. Honestly, I just don’t think it was a priority for the filmmakers. This particular bit doesn’t bother me because the movies are not supposed to replace the source material—they are an interpretation. To me, watching the movies is like reading fic—fun to watch but not canon. Also, the filmmakers removed so much of their relationship in GoF that they HAD to make Sirius and Harry physically affectionate in order for movie audiences to see what losing Sirius would mean to Harry. Their complexity is completely unexplored in the films, and they had to do SOMETHING to get the audience to feel sad when Sirius died. This started in PoA when they really downplayed the context of their relationship. (Lol, see my rant on PoA. I really don’t like that movie hahahahaha.)
2. In the books, Harry and Sirius are not physically affectionate with each other despite their intense love for each other, and I think this is an effective way to show characterization. As I tell my students, this might have been intentional by the author, but it could have been an instinct that she followed (what feels right for the characters).
Here’s what I think: both are so terrified of losing the other that they won’t allow themselves to get too close, and, crucially, they both fear showing vulnerability. Touching someone and reaching out for a hug or comfort is an extremely vulnerable thing to do. If you reach out for a hug, you are showing your true feelings. To be rejected physically is sometimes more devastating than someone telling you to just “go away.” It’s a sign of trust to touch someone—you are trusting that they feel the same way about you, and you are trusting that they won’t pull away. Both Sirius and Harry understand rejection, and both avoid it. How do you avoid rejection? You distance yourself.
I’ll put the rest under a cut because I think this might get long…
Sirius and Harry, for all that they love each other, fall out of trusting each other by OotP. Part of this is trauma, but it is also miscommunication. Harry is worried that Sirius will do something stupid—either out of concern for Harry or because he wants to get out of number 12–but he’s worried he’ll lose Sirius. So by withholding affection (which I’m not sure if he knows how to give physically), Harry distances himself from Sirius which will, theoretically, keep Sirius safe (of course, it backfires). Sirius is…you know…going through stuff in OotP. He is already vulnerable—he perceives himself as being emasculated because he’s not allowed to leave his childhood home and he’s relegated to performing ‘uninteresting, domestic work’, and he must be inactive when he’s a man OF action.
When it comes to Goblet of Fire and the odd handshake… I think Sirius is reeeeeally holding back. Harry does NOT want him to go, and Sirius knows this. (Why DOES Dumbledore send him away? Literally anyone else could have “alerted the old crowd” and NOT the convicted murderer. This is clearly the author’s excuse to get Sirius away from Harry—and, I’ve spoken to this before, Sirius is too much of a miracle character—too smart, too loyal, too loving to support the story that the author wanted to tell.) Sirius, if he had stayed, would have been the emotional support that Harry needed. So if Sirius holds Harry, what if Harry doesn’t let go? What if Sirius himself can’t let go? A handshake will have to do.
So Sirius leaves Harry with that bizarre handshake. That Sirius leaves at all damages their relationship—it could have been repaired with time (if they’d been allowed time), but this moment makes Harry realize that he cannot rely on anyone, not even Sirius. This leaves Harry to be isolated in OotP, and it leaves him to feel like he cannot trust anyone. I’m not blaming Sirius for leaving, but I believe this action causes a rift between them that carries into the next book.
My point is, I HATE that they don’t touch but it is very important that they don’t, at least when it comes to the story that the author wanted to tell. I think it was the right move when we look at the story as a whole. Do I like it? NO! But it’s interesting, and it DOES feel right for them. Is it devastating? Yes!!!!!!!
TL;DR: I don’t think either interpretation is necessarily better than the other, but they both have their purpose. Both are effective!
Touch is…huge in HP. Consider Voldemort’s “I can touch him now” and causing Harry pain. Touch is a privilege, and to be touched without permission is a violation. Harry kills someone by touching them. He is only touched by his family when Dudley beats him up or he gets shoved in his cupboard.
Weirdly, one of my absolutely favorite moments when Sirius and Harry touch is in PoA when the Dementors are closing in on Sirius, Harry, and Hermione, and Harry, as he’s about to faint, reaches out to grab an unconscious Sirius by the arm, thinking something along the lines of “the dementors weren’t going to take him” and such. And this is about two seconds after Harry has accepted that Sirius is telling the truth! Harry physically tethers Sirius to him—this touch-starved teen reaches out to this man who is now everything to him, who is now his only real family, willing to risk death (or worse) to keep it. BUT THEY JUST MET!!!!! Devastating!!!
Also…another thought: the first time Sirius and Harry touch is the first time Sirius has been touched as a human in twelve years. And Harry is beating the absolute shit out of him…and then Sirius nearly strangles him…
Also, also, not to like…self-promote, but if you want some Sirius & Harry family feelings and a wee bit of affectionate touching, I wrote a one-shot where they talk about their feelings in OotP.
Anyway, this got longer than I thought. Thank you for the prompt!!

OH NO I NEED ALL OF THIS
Sirius gives his life as Secret Keeper and Remus finds out he's pregnant after.
Sirius is tortured to insanity and Remus and James visit him in St. Mungo's every week.
THE BABY BEING TAKEN AND RAISED BY WALBURGA AND REMUS DOESN'T MEET HIM UNTIL POA YES. Oh my goodness that is TRAGIC.
I need all of these pregnant Remus stories, please and thank you.
Okay WAIT I thought of one last horrifically tragic seed moon idea: Sirius stays the Potters' secret keeper, and as predicted, he's targeted by Death Eaters and killed. James and Lily (and Harry) all survive, and Remus learns that he's pregnant a few weeks later. James and Lily move Remus into their home and Baby Black is raised alongside Harry, but never knows their other father (but is told many many stories about how he's a great hero.) <3
OH MY GOD THIS IS TRAGIC AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
Also the version where he is tortured into insanity like the Longbottoms (though Remus never makes the kiddo visit until they want to. Remus goes religiously three times a week as does James and they both go one day a week to St. Mungo’s).
Y’all, I was supposed to come out of the Seed Moon fest relieved of some of my pregnant Remus brain rot and now I only have MORE.
All during testing today I just kept imagining this sweet, bookish, shy boy with black hair who meets the trio on the train and ends up in the last compartment because his cousin whom he lives with hates him because he is sweet and shy and he’s the Black heir and the cousin is jealous. Ron isn’t sure because this is a Black/Malfoy but then he hears the kid doesn’t really like Draco so he relaxes and they all learn he’s the son of the infamous Sirius Black and so Harry and Hermione are sympathetic. Meanwhile Remus is listening underneath his cloak tears streaming down his face because Walburga had this boy literally ripped out of his arms after birth because she went after him legally and forcibly and won. Not even Lyall could help him. He’s literally under a magical gag order not to reveal his identity so he CAN’T. Kiddo reveals the only thing he knows is that his one father is Sirius Black and they go to Grimmauld for family gatherings even though his grandparents have passed and he keeps sneaking looks at the tapestry to try to get a clue about his other parent, whom he was told didn’t want him, and once, he saw the first name, Remus, so he’s curious but no one will discuss it with him ever.
Remus insists on being introduced as RJ Lupin because he doesn’t want the boy to get in trouble, and because, who knows what magic that gag order could do even if he’s not the one to breach it.
And the boy argues and argues with the sorting hat because he has to be in Slytherin because it’s EXPECTED but the hat says no to a student request for the first time in its history and announces Gryffindor and the kid is now ostracized from his fellow house members AND disdained by the Slytherins and he’s so sad and lonely and bullied and of course Narcissa and Lucius send an embarrassing Howler and it’s awful.
Kid goes to kind Professor Lupin because he’s desperate to defend himself from bullies and by his fear that Sirius Black will come for him and Remus knows he should say no but he can’t because this is HIS BOY.
(He also teaches Harry Patronus lessons, etc. Maybe this kid, too.)
They make it to the Shack (which is not the night of the full moon, damn it) and the whole thing comes out and Remus is ready to tear Peter limb from limb. Peter took away EVERYTHING. Some angst, some tears, some misery, some forgiveness, etc., etc. I haven’t gotten that far. Everyone is a mess but Peter doesn’t get away and Sirius is cleared.
Y’all.

Do you prefer post Azkaban, where James comes back the same age he was when he died or where James has aged as well?
I know messy midlife prongsfoot is top tier, but we also have age gap
Yeah, I'll be honest, as much as I love a good age gap, I do prefer when James comes back having aged as normal post-POA. I think there's just so much good ANGST there - imagine blinking at 21 and all of a sudden you're 35 and you've missed 14 years of life.
I do love Prongsfoot age gap AUs though - I think I made a headcanon post a while ago about Sirius being in his 40s and working for Fleamont, and he meets the boss's 20-year-old son and can't keep his hands off him ;)

YOU'RE BACK AND YOU BRED REMUS this is so so lovely <3
hi hello sorry i disappeared i have been infected with brain rot of a different variety but i am back with some knocked up remus (feat. a very anxious james) only a little late for the seed moon
James stumbles through the front door of their cottage, bleary eyed and exhausted. Practice had run late that day, on account of their grueling efforts to prepare for the World Cup; James can’t remember ever having trained like this before, and he still isn’t even sure if they’ll be ready, physically or mentally. Hell, he’s still not even sure if he wants to participate.
Remus’ due date is far too close to the scheduled end of the Cup for James’ liking; enough that James isn’t even sure he wants him attending any of the matches.
Of course, he’s sure that Remus will call him ridiculous if he voices that thought out loud, and that he’ll be at all of James’ matches, sitting with Sirius in his suite, supportive but disinterested, and uncomfortable but unwilling to miss even a minute that James is in the air.
“England’s chances of winning are slim, even with you there, so I’m not about to have you sit out on what might be a career defining moment for you,” Remus had told him, when James suggested maybe he should refuse a spot on the national team. “I also don’t need the whole country hating me because you decided you needed to sit home and rub my feet, so…”
“You barely even let me do this as is,” James said, while rubbing Remus’ rather swollen feet. “Which is rude, by the way.”
“So you’ve said, James.”
“I just want to pamper you, Moonbeam.”
“I know, James.”
Remus had convinced him, in the end, by pointing out that Harry would love attending the Cup. This was playing dirty, in James’ opinion, but that is, truthfully, the only way Remus plays.
James is obsessed with him. And his husband is correct, that much he can admit; James would hate having to miss sharing this experience with Harry.
Still, he worries. James thinks his worry might swallow him whole. While both Remus and Sirius have taken turns assuring him, time and again, that Remus will be fine, that the baby isn’t going to come a month early, and that Sirius will be looking after Remus and Harry the whole time, James can’t just…stop worrying. It’s who he is. He frets.
He’s in the process of wondering where, exactly, said husband might be, when he nearly falls and breaks his leg over a little bundle of fur scurrying around their foyer.
“Fucking—no, no, yikes, I mean yikes.” James tries so hard to keep his language child friendly, especially with the way Remus curses like a sailor, but he doesn’t always succeed. Especially not when he has nifflers trying to murder him in his own home.
“No! No, come here, you—” James just barely catches the thing by the scruff of its neck, and lifts it up in front of his face, squinting his eyes to try and read the name on its collar. “Which one are you? Kerouac? Or Cassady?”
James does not understand why Remus brought home a little of baby nifflers, and he understands even less the names he gave them, but Remus is pregnant with his child, and James wants him to be happy, which means their home has since been filled with any number of various creatures for the last few months, some of them dangerous and some of them just pure pests. He still isn’t sure which category the niffler falls into.
The little ball of fur tries to bite him. James has to resist the urge to march back outside and throw it into the forest.
“Okay, well, whoever you are, let’s get you back to your mummy and away from me,” he mutters, as he walks through the kitchen, on the path to their back garden, where James assumes he’ll find the little thing’s siblings.
He does, indeed, find a veritable nest of nifflers, but he also finds his husband and his son, sitting atop the grass; Harry is giggling, his face and glasses splattered with dirt, and Remus is showing him…something, some kind of creature, that’s curled up in the palm of his hand. There’s a small, easy smile on his husband’s face, despite the dark circles under his eyes and the way that James knows his knees must be protesting, the way he’s kneeling.
Okay, alright, yes. Remus can fill their home with as many creatures as he wants, forever, pregnant or not.
“Hello, my darlings,” James says, as he kneels between them, adding even more grass stains to his already impossibly dirty Quidditch uniform. “What’s this little beast we’ve got here?”
He hardly even has time to breath before Harry launches himself at him. The niffler escapes at this moment, and of course chooses to run back into the house, because why wouldn’t he?
“Daddy,” Harry says, seriously, “this is a grass snake. They live in the garden. Not just our garden, but all gardens.”
“Yes, because most gardens don’t have colonies of nifflers,” James says, and makes eye contact with Remus, teasing him just a little. “But I suppose they do have grass snakes, and that’s a good thing, isn’t it?”
Remus rolls his eyes, a bit of fondness glimmering there in the light. “I told you, the sanctuary will be here to pick them up within the week.” He lets the snake slither out of his hand and back into the grass. Then, he makes an effort to shuffle, on his knees, over to James and Harry, to close the small distance between them. He does not succeed.
James tries not to laugh. “Let me help you.” He lifts Harry up, places him atop his shoulders, and reaches out for Remus, lifting him up and to his feet.
“I would pretend to be offended that you didn’t ask,” Remus huffs, “but we both know I wasn’t going to be able to get up by myself.”
James grins, and leans in for a kiss. “I’m surprised you even got down there, Moons.”
“It wasn’t easy,” Remus says, and goes in for another kiss. “How was practice?”
“I’m beginning to think this whole Quidditch thing isn’t worth it.”
Remus snorts. “That bad, was it?”
James sighs. “I could sleep for days, if given the chance.”
Harry gently begins tugging on his curls. “You can’t. You promised we’d fly tonight, daddy.”
“I am going to be having words with Sirius about that broom,” he mutters. “Yes, love, sure we will. But maybe a nap first?”
“Some tea and a nap,” Remus says. He has one hand resting atop his jumper covered jump, and one cupping James’ cheek. “You go shower, get yourself sorted, and I’ll have it ready when you’re done.”
James frowns. “Remus—”
Remus rolls his eyes, again. “Prongs, I’m pregnant, not bedridden. Harry and I can manage to put the kettle on without you. We survived all morning by yourselves, didn’t we?”
James’ shoulders shake with the force of Harry’s nods. “We did! We fed all the creatures and took a walk out to the lake and then we saw the grass snake.”
“Oh, well, I spoke too soon,” James says, seriously, unable to quite hide his grin when Remus laughed at his antics.
“You did,” Remus agrees, just as seriously, and gestures for James to give Harry to him. He settles him on his hip, and they walk inside together, hand in hand. “Go on, go shower. When you get out I’ll tell you all about the kelpie we found in the lake.”
“Sorry, the what?”

Krabapple gave us TWO treats for Seed Moon Fest! We are so spoiled!
It’s showtime! For @impishtubist’s informal Seed Moon fest, not one but two fics!
(One is long, the other a small trifle.)
The first: living, loving, and trying to survive during OOTP.
The second: A bit of Lie Low at Lupin’s fluff.

Sending the ball back!
(I know you are busy, no pressure. 💗)
So how do you think Remus handles pregnancy (or more than one, lol)? Each one is different, of course, but how does he feel about it? Is it a chore to get through but one that yields a result that’s worth it? Does he find any part of it amazing? (No is an okay answer!) Anything he particularly loathes or likes? Cravings? Symptoms? Bring it on. 💖
Oooooooooooooh this is so INTERESTING.
First of all, I have never been and will never be pregnant, so I am in no way speaking from experience, haha.
I do mostly think it's a chore he has to get through, and the end result is more than worth it. However, I think there are parts that he finds joy in! Feeling the baby kick, having the baby so close to him and somewhere he can protect them (it's SCARY when they're no longer inside him and he can't keep them close all the time!), Sirius's foot and shoulder massages, reading and singing to the baby, sitting down with Sirius to pick out baby names and decorating the nursery...I think he'd like all of that! And I think there's a part of him that would like the baby bump, hehe, it shows the world that Sirius is his and keeps putting babies in him, and there's a thrill in that ;)
