I’m going to say it
2002 Birds of Prey show was a good show. And I’m tired of people not knowing it exists/shitting on it.
Tumblr media
It did a good job with Barbara (minus one thing I hated in the finale) as Oracle and her talking about being Batgirl. It did a good job with Helena Kyle-Wayne as Huntress. I’m still up on the air with Dinah. I enjoy Dinah, but then remember who Dinah Lance is in the comics and go “…huh”. But Dinah as a new character, I enjoy her. Alfred? God I love him. Alfred deserves the world. Some of the villains, pretty decent, especially for the fact is was freaking 2002 and the superhero obsessed world hasn’t come to full fruition.
I rewatch this show a lot. It’s one of my comfort shows. “But it’s cringe” oh shut up. Without this show you wouldn’t have much of a CW superhero superhero-verse. “But this part doesn’t seem very realistic” Shut up. I don’t care. It’s okay. I don’t think it’s realistic either but it’s a show. It’s okay
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also while I’m at it. WTF dc. I’m still waiting for the ending of my 90s Birds of Prey arc. I have so many unanswered questions and characters who don’t exist anymore and never got an offical backstory on

I desperately want to know what the extent of the editorial mandate re: Babsgirl is, because the spectrum of Tom Taylor only depicting Babs as a perfectly abled Batgirl to Ram V only using her as Oracle is too much variation for me to place all blame for writers' creative choices on editorial
Like...Kelly Thompson is on Twitter insinuating that editorial is to blame for why Babs is going to be Batgirl and not Oracle in her Birds of Prey run, but there's clearly some level of writer capacity within the mandates for Babs to be depicted as visibly disabled or only used as Oracle, from her being an ambulatory wheelchair user who occasionally uses a cane in Batgirls:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pages from Batgirls (2021), by Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad
To other writers seemingly being perfectly capable of only utilizing her as Oracle for entire arcs at a time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pages from Mariko Tamaki's 2021 Detective Comics run and Ram V's 2023 Detective Comics run
And I want to know what the mandates actually are so I can figure out how much responsibility any given writer vs. editorial bears for the ongoing ableism and sexism whenever Babs pops up in a comic
Because I can certainly believe there's some sort of editorial mandate on the wheelchair or referencing her spinal chip being faulty, but I find it EXTREMELY difficult to believe we're back in the Burnside-era anti-Oracle mandates given there are multiple writers only utilizing Babs as Oracle right now

In light of recent news over the passing of voice actress Arleen Sorkin, I wish to reflect on the impact of Harley Quinn on my life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I was a kid I grew with Harley. From getting fired from a tv show for giving questionable advice, as her backstory in the 2004 cartoon The Batman, to falling in mad love with her own patient as is the origin story in the 92 animated and subsequent media, Harley has such a big role in Batman lore I don't remember a single time where she wasn't involved. Sometimes I wonder what batman mythos was like before her inclusion.
The first thing that drew me to Harley was her design. Red and black the colors of danger which she was. But there was an added playfulness, that she genuinely enjoyed being herself. She was also VERY hilarious and at times out of pocket. Child Me was amazed. Did I want to be her? Not necessarily. But she did look like someone I'd hang out with.
Tumblr media
The meta origin of Harley is just as fascinating. The creators of BTAS saw a performance of Arleen in a clown costume. From there inspiration leapt off the pages onto the big screen. Unlike most of the cast Harley didn't originate from the comics. She was created exclusively for the show, an OC if you will. OCs tend to have a mixed reputation. But Harley's concept and execution was so perfect, she almost feels like she could've been a real character in the comics.
And real she became!
Introduced as a psychiatrist, after receiving Joker as a patient, Dr. Harleen Quinzel begins to fall in love with him; and down a path to iconoclastic doom. Her love for Joker is obsessive, hilarious shallow, horrible but also downright entertaining to watch. I enjoyed every moment she was on screen: I still quote "rev up your Harley" to this day! I see her despair, her goofy outlook and morbid ruthlessness. I wanted her to get comeuppance but at the same time I can't help but feel sorry for her.
Joker abuses her, ignores her, and only complements her when she does something good for him. While the makes how awful their relationship clear, there are a good amount of fans who sees the pair as a glamorous whirlwind romance a la Sonny and Brenda or Jane and Mr Rochester. While such fantasies may seem morbid I don't blame them. No matter how horrible Harley is there is a tiny unavoidable spot that aches for her to win. Or at least see Joker for the monster he really is. While Harley is often held accountable for her actions her arc shows that no one deserves to be abused.
Arleen's performance played a major role in brining Harley to life. She nailed her weaknesses and strengths with such a sincere note that elicits pity, humor and shock at the same time. And of course that ear candy of the New Jersey accent that set the standard for future VAs. Whenever I look at a picture of Harley I hear Arleen. Not to say the other VAs aren't bad, but Arleen's performance is that iconic I can't help but think of her!
Tumblr media
Over the years Harley grew apart from Clown Prince of Crime. She got her own spinoff comics, made appearances in other DC media. She even gotten her own tv show which sees the DC universe through her eyes. Harley has marginally healthier romances, primarily Poison Ivy (this isn't to say that pairing doesn't have it's share of toxic moments). The Harlivy ship is a fan favorite but even without shipping and the wars, Harley still shines bright as the Bat Signal.
Tumblr media
In a way Harley's descent and eventual rise back to normalcy reminds me of my own struggles. I wasn't a happy child growing up, I've made a lot of mistakes and bad choices. To see a person like Harley work to take back control of her life, makes me feel a bit better for my own prospects. Of course I wouldn't torture a kid to near insanity or blow up a whole city but I can at least put my energy towards something constructive. Harley shows people like me thay we can be more than just screwups if we try.
Tumblr media
Of course I can't forget Harley's design. The red&black suit is an icon by itself and inspires similar designs in and outside comics. I could talk all day about how cool her design is from a show and historical perspective but that would take me all day. While I prefer her classic palette, her recent blue and pinks aren't bad either and show just how far she's come out of Joker's shadow. It's even to the point where when, I see something black and red and white I have to point it out and say "Harley would love that outfit!"
Nowadays I complain about the oversaturation of Harley quinn (seriously what was DC thinking taking a team started by a disabled character to reclaim her agency) and overshadowing other cool DC villains. But I would be lying of I say she didn't leave an impact. And it's all thanks to Arleen Sorkin for breathing life into a character that proves you don't need to be be from "the comics" to be considered cool.
Thank you Arleen! May her memory be a blessing - Grits.

I know I am late, but here are my thoughts on Harley Quinn season four ending.
I am very confused and intrigued by Harley Quinn season four's ending. I figured out they were setting up Gotham City Sirens or Birds of Prey when they called Barbara from the moon. Very excited to have more Silena.
But also. Are they giving Nightwing Jason's arc? Because Jason already exists. Harley has his number, he showed up in her phone. Talia is just reanimating all the batkids now. She's like "hah Bruce, I took ALL your children." Now the question is wether Tim exists. And poor Alfred. Someone help him. Maybe Jason will break you out.
We clearly got Oracle. Nightwing going on some Red Hood arc.
Gotham City Sirens. More baby Damian. Yeah lets get more of the batfam and more Sirens. Also loved Talia al Ghul.
I also appreciate the show now seems less afraid to also have emotional or serious beats along with the parody messes. At least it seemed so to me. Hope we see more of Nora and Ivy's protogees. Volcana, Terra, and Tefe?
Do love all the crack characters. This is the place to show them.
As a jewish person, I noticed Harley talked about passover and hiding the afekomen (I have nod idea if I spelled that correctly.) So good on that, but also, a single line is kind of baseline.
So many questions. So many curiosites. This show is doing really well.

Tumblr media
I mean we got oracle something I never thought they would do after the made babs a big time character in the show
Tumblr media
But now we even got the birds of prey with them finally giving Harley the superhero role she deserves the take no prisoners iron fisted take down any villains that step out of line mentality something I think the birds of prey were originally created apon

My theories on Harley as a system as someone with OSDD:
-So Harley in the Harley Quinn show regularly talks to a “former version” of herself. This is grounds enough to headcannon her as a system from the get go, but I think in “Icons Only” (the Vegas episode) we see this reflection act autonomously and beg that Harley to take her with her.
-In Harley’s brain we see a little terrifying girl versions of her that can freely interact with the modern day Harley too. I know Dr. Psycho gives an explanation as to why but I think this little girl version of Harley is quite possibly also an alter, and that’s why she can interact with herself in her headspace in the ways she does. It’s possible this child does not front and has a stronger internal role, hence us only seeing her in Harley’s headspace. I think also her role reads literally as a persecutor protector (which our own persecutor protector agrees with.)
-Loosing time, and “sleep walking” to the point where you harm others is pretty classic dissociative amnesia. I think “Villain Harley” is also an alter.
-I think the last alter is more of a slant reading, but potato Harley’s neurotic lawful good personality is not explainable by just introducing a potato as far as I’m concerned. I think this is another alter, and that the dynamics of who’s present and who fronts for potato Harley is different than everyday Harley.
So that would be at least three alters/headmates and up to five depending on how you read it. This headcannon just means a lot to me as someone with OSDD! I hope others might find meaning in this reading too!
