Shaon di!!!! Miru here!
From the OTP ask game:
46. Who initiates kisses?
33. What are their favourite ice creams?
9. Who pushes a door instead of pulling it?
( I don't remember the exact words of the list though hehe😅)
And obviously you know for which OTP do I want these HCs...... BriNoy our beloved!! ❤️❤️
And here's LOOOTS OF LOVE FOR YOU!! ❤️💖❤️💖❤️💖
Miru !!!!! Thank you so much for sending this in, it means a lot. Bucketful of love for you ❤️💖❤️💖
tw: many mentions of kissing. Not too detailed, but if frequent mentions make you uncomfortable, take caution (or don't read it, whatever helps you, please take the necessary measures.
Number nine has already been answered, here, so feel free to ask another question in place of it. Kindly check the tag to see if I have answered that one already, so that we don't fall into an endless loop of you sending a number and then having to choose another number. Although, I think, this happened because my post was still in the queue when you send this in, so you couldn't have known about it. Happens. You get another question, enjoy :)
Who initiates kisses?
They are very physically affectionate and don't shy away from it. Kisses are frequent, and of various types.
Subinoy is the more physically affectionate of the two, but for kisses, it is mostly Brishti who takes the initiative, for the romantic ones, at least, where they are staring at each other for too long with their lips dangerously close. She is also the one who reaches up during movie time on the couch and gives him a kiss, or reaches over and kisses him when they are in bed and he is reading a book (or a file).
Subinoy gives her plenty of kisses, but most of them are casual, sometimes absent-minded, and always, always quick. Chaste. A kiss to the top of her head when they are cuddling on the couch, a sleepy kiss to her ear when she snuggles up to him, soothing kisses to her temple, kisses to her hand when she is waving her palm in front of him and purposefully causing a distraction, the like.
He also gives her kisses that are deliberate, slow. A kiss on the back of her neck when he hugs her from behind, a deep kiss when she is reading a book and ignoring him. Little kisses he gives her when he wants kisses from her, he stops if she doesn't register the kisses, escalates when she does, and soon they are drowning in kisses.
Brishti, for her part, gives him plenty of kisses. Little kisses, playful kisses, sleepy, sloppy kisses, deliberate kisses, passionate ones, you name it, she has probably done it. She especially loves kissing his jawline, and she loves getting kisses to her ear (he knows it and indulges her).
What are their favorite ice creams?
Brishti and Subinoy are painfully basic when it comes to ice creams, probably because back when they had ice cream on a regular (more like semi regular) basis, there weren't many flavours.
Subinoy tends to avoid food that tastes sweet, but ice-cream doesn't always receive the same treatment, the temperature of it removing some of its excessive sweetness, Brishti's love for them (and her wish for ice-creams to become a part of them instead of something she ate while he looked on) having done the rest. He isn't terribly fond of ice-cream, but he has it, as opposed to other sweet dishes and desserts.
Chocolate and vanilla are the flavors they have the most, vanilla being cheaper and readily available and chocolate coming in the form of choco bars with a hard chocolate coating (Kwaliti feast) influencing their decisions. They both prefer bars and cups over cones, Subinoy because the wafer is, again, sweet, and Brishti, because choco bar, a good, quality choco bar, is delicious and cups come in standard sizes whereas with scoops it depends on where you are buying your ice-cream from.
Other than these, Subinoy enjoys butterscotch, and they both hate strawberry ice-cream, for no particular reason other than the color and the fact that it tastes like candy. On the flip side, Bilu loves it, so Subinoy has had it on more than one occasion (it is a little difficult to refuse his seven year old son) and hated every second of it.

Once again, thank you so much for this ask, I hope you enjoy reading these BriNoy HCs.

The Most Wonderful Time of The Year
Request: @laura-gzz Steve Rogers x Reader going for a christmas shopping day
Pairing: Steve x Reader
Word count: 1658
this is very fluffy and I’ll admit I don’t do christmas shopping so I found it a lil hard, but regardless enjoy!
Tumblr media
“You ready?” Steve asked as he leaned over the couch to press a kiss to my forehead.
“I don’t want to stop being a burrito,” I whined as I tugged the blanket I was clutching tightly around my chest. I was watching love actually for what was probably the 500th time and yet in my eyes it was still the greatest Christmas movie of all time.
He let out a light laugh, “you know that if we don’t go now, we won’t go ever.” That was true, the two of us were so bad at organising our Christmas schedules. We needed to do it on a day we were both free—which was almost never.
“Okay fine.” I let out a loud, overdramatic sigh as I pushed myself off the couch and out of the comfort of my blanket. “I wish we could just stay at home and cuddle all day.” I pouted as I grabbed my coat from the rack.
“And miss out on the best day of the year?” He smirked as he pulled me into his side. He knew I hated how crowded the mall got around Christmas.
“Oh yeah,” I rolled my eyes.  “I love getting in screaming matches with old women, long queues and endless buzzing in my ears because of the hoards of people.” The only thing I enjoyed about the day was spending time with him.
“Why are you such a Grinch this year.” He frowned—usually I was more of a Cindy.
“I honestly have no clue.” It was true—I just didn’t know where all my Christmas spirit had disappeared to.
“C’mon,” he rubbed my shoulder “I promise we can cuddle when we get back.”
I suddenly perked up, that was definitely an incentive. “Amazing, and then you can watch love actually with me.”
“Absolutely not.” He was so extremely tired of my tendency to over-watch my favourite films.
“It was worth a shot.” I laughed, knowing I would rope him into watching it anyway.
 --
“What do I buy a super spy, with a metal arm for Christmas?” I held up a butcher’s knife in front of Steve’s face. He rolled his eyes and took the knife from me. It was my third Christmas with Steve and every year I pretended not to know what to get his best friend, but deep down I knew exactly what I was buying for him.
“(Y/N),” he rolled his eyes—he looked staunch, but I knew deep down he found it funny.
“What?” I raised an eyebrow, “for all I know his secret passion is carvery.”
“He is definitely NOT into carving meats.” Steve laughed—there it was, he definitely found it funny.
“I don’t know Steven, I’ve seen him carve plenty of meat in my time.” It was a joke, but it was 500% true.
“You know he’s sensitive about that stuff.” Steve was right, Bucky did feel bad—but Bucky also tried to gouge flesh out of my arm during the civil war.
“Fine,” I picked up a cinnamon scented candle, “he’s getting a candle.” I knew that once we’d breezed through most of the list I’d go to the journal aisle to pick up a new one for him. It was our unspoken tradition and I knew he filled them up—the guy had a lot of thoughts. After that was done, I’d get a leather bound one with blank pages for Steve, so he could sketch and on my solo run I’d pick up a whole bunch of new art supplies for him—as well as my favourite cologne of his.
“One day,” Steve muttered to himself, as I pondered my mental list. “One day you’ll get along.” He was under the pretence that because he and I ended up making amends after whatever had happened, that Bucky and I could too. It was wishful thinking, however I really wasn’t sure that the love, hate relationship between Bucky and I would ever end—the banter was just too much fun.
“Hey, we need to stop by at the kitchen goods aisle.” I quickly changed the subject. “I have to buy Tony an espresso machine cause I broke his.”
“You don’t drink coffee?” Steve frowned.
“I know,” I nodded, “I threw it at someone.” It’d been a lovely time—I didn’t take random invasions of my tower lightly.
“Wow,” he shook his head. “How are we so opposite?” Steve would never throw a coffee machine at someone.
“I don’t know but you know what they s—oh my god.” I paused as we walked past the menswear isle. “Steve.” I shook his arm so he’d turn to look at what I was seeing.
“What?” He raised an eyebrow in question.
“I must buy you that sweater.” My mouth was a literal ‘O’ as I stared down the Christmas sweater in front of me.
“What sweater, where? Oh—“ He finally noticed the one I’d been eyeing. “No way, no thank you.”
“Excuse me,” I rushed towards it— there was no way I wasn’t buying him that damn ugly sweater. It was green—the ugly Christmas green, with white stitching and right in the centre was a reindeer with a 3D nose. “But you have no say in this matter.” He was going to look absolutely hilarious in it and there was nothing I loved more than my boyfriend looking funny.
“I don’t know why I try,” he spoke to himself as I rummaged through the rack for an extra, extra large. “Aha!” I cheered as I pulled one from the back, “try it on.”
His face was blank, but he took the sweater from me regardless. As he pulled it over his head my heart began to feel so full—he really loved me. Anyone who was willing to wear a sweater that ugly for someone else had to be full of love.
“What’s wrong?” he asked when he finally got it on—probably because he’d noticed how I was staring at him with wide and loving eyes.
“I love you,” I couldn’t stop staring at him, “I really bloody love you.”
“Does the sweater make me look that good?” A small smirk played on his lips—I could’ve jumped on him right then. Even with the most hideous item of clothing on, he looked an absolute 11 out of 10.
“Shut up.” I tried to mask how loving I was feeling with humor, but I wasn’t sure I could get the stupid smile off my face.
He pulled the sweater off and placed it in the trolley. “Let’s go buy the coffee machine.” He slung his arm around my shoulder and I honestly felt at home.
 --
“Okay,” we loaded the last of our things into the back of the car. “There’s just one more thing I need to pick up.” He slammed the boot closed. “You stay here, I’ll be two seconds.”
“What?” I frowned, “why didn’t you just get it whilst we were in there?”
“Because. ” He paused for a second, “I don’t know actually, I think I just forgot.” He scratched his head in confusion, clearly wondering what to say next.
It was a poor excuse, but I decided I’d let it slip. “Alright,” I waved my hand, “go on.”
“Be back in 5!” he shouted back at me as he jogged back in.
 --
“I knew I’d get you to watch this with me.” I grinned as I nestled myself into Steve’s side—I always won when it came to movies.
“I only do it because I love you.” He yawned before wrapping his arm around my shoulder.
“Oh look at you,” I poked his cheek, “trying the old yawn trick on me—It’s okay Captain, I already like you.”
A sly smirk spread across his face, “do you want a hot chocolate?”
“I would love one, but I really, really don’t want you to get up right now.” I slung my arm over his stomach and nestled further against him—allowing for the ugly sweater I’d picked to scratch against my skin.
“Hey,” he looked down at me and just stared for a second. “Will you marry me?”
“What?” My mouth suddenly ran dry—surely he was not asking me that.
He slowly pushed me aside, getting up off the couch and onto the floor—of course he was getting down on one knee.
My heart was beating at a pace I didn’t think was even possible, my palms felt like they were sweating litres.
He fished for something in his back pocket and within seconds pulled out a ring. “The box felt uncomfortable in my pocket—“ he laughed lightly. “But seriously (Y/N), I’d been waiting for the right time and when you looked at me today and told me you loved me, I knew it had to be today. So will you?”
“What a stupid question!” I cried out, “of course I bloody will.” I bounced off the couch and basically pummelled him as I fell on top of him—peppering him with a barrage of kisses.
“I love you.” He placed a chaste kiss to my lips.
“Yeah?” I grinned down at him, my hair falling all over his face.
 “Yes.” He nodded.
“Well I think it’s quite obvious how I feel.” I sat up, my thighs straddling him as I combed my hands through his hair and admired the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with. “I’ll even allow you to make Bucky your best man.”
He laughed, the sides of his eyes crinkling as his face lit up. “Promise me you’ll try harder with him?”
I frowned, but nodded. “Only because I’ll have to see his ugly mug for the rest of my life, not because I love you or anything.”
“No,” Steve shook his head, his stupidly beautiful smile still plastered on his face. “Definitely not because you love me.”

New Post has been published on https://travelonlinetips.com/best-gold-coast-restaurants-by-precinct-2/
Best Gold Coast restaurants by precinct
If you can’t find a rockin’ place to eat on the Gold Coast, than you’re doing something wrong. In fact, there just aren’t enough mealtimes in the day to get through this mammoth list of Gold Coast restaurants and cafes that are truly local faves.
We’ve broken it down by precinct, starting north and heading our way down the coast, so no matter where you’re staying, the best eats and Insta-opportunities are just moments away!
Southport
The go-to for authentic Asian eats on the Gold Coast, you can expect to rub shoulders with office workers by day and dim sum lovers by night in Southport (or SoPo as the kids at Randy Wallhole like to call it).
Randy Wallhole is basically all your childhood breakfast dreams realised. Start your morning with their iced latte Coco Pops – yep, literally Coco Pops served over an iced latte (Tobys Estate none the less) – or go old school with a Mum’s Special Jaffle (aka Heinz spaghetti and cheese).
If you’re feeling a little more grown up and sophisticated, they do bagels too.
Then, make a beeline for Blendlove. While they serve a full plant-based food menu here (try the Magic Mushrooms with basil vegan mince and cashew aioli for brekkie, and gluten-free BBQ Ranch Burger with housemade bean and kale patty later on), we’ll admit, it’s ALL about the raw desserts and bowls.
Top your choc berry ripe smoothie bowl with flaked coconut and caramel buckinis, and take away a slab of Cheezecake made from the flavours of the day.
If you’re after cheap, quality Japanese BBQ, head for JFX where you can grill your own or fuel up with a tasty bento or ramen. For authentic north Chinese Uighur cuisine, grab a table and BYO at Xin Jiang, or join the queue for yum cha at Top One at Australia Fair Shopping Centre.
Also check out… Chinatown Street Markets are on the first Saturday of every month from 5pm to 9pm.
Main Beach
A bundle of fish and chips or a Chiko Roll are just as at home in Main Beach as the swanky prix fixe lunches found along Tedder Ave. One thing’s for sure, Main Beach packs a lot of culinary punch into its patch.
Head to Marina Mirage for the pick of the bunch, like Glass Dining, which fits like Cinderella’s slipper every time you visit. Start with a mixed dozen of the freshest oysters and wash them down with one of Glass’s signature cocktails as the sun sets over the marina. (Psst. You might have seen it in our list of 11 Gold Coast restaurants with epic water views.)
Just down the road you can treat yourself to a swanky high tea (gluten-free options available) in the Le Jardin Lobby Bar at Palazzo Versace. For Italian, book into Ristorante Fellini, or there’s good ol’ fashioned fish and chips at the Omeros Brothers.
Also check out… Pick up just-shucked oysters and fish and chips at Peter’s Fish Market – one of the best spots for fish and chips on the coast.
Surfers Paradise
For first-timers to the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise usually becomes the epicentre of your stay.
On the eating front, options span the entire spectrum – from Shake Shak-style burgers and frozen concretes at cult burger joint, Betty’s Burgers, to unbeatable water views (and insanely good oysters) at Seascape.
Hotels are the hotbed of restaurant stars in this precinct, with Bazaar at QT Gold Coast offering a gourmet buffet like you’ve never experienced before. If it’s a Friday night, make a bee-line for Rumba Caliente at Stingray Bar, where you’ll be transported to Latin America with empanadas, Cuban espresso martinis, and Latino jams.
Get your teppanyaki on at Misono at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa – which claims to be the largest teppanyaki restaurant in the country – or experience Asian fusion delights at Catch Restaurant in the Hilton Surfers Paradise.
After you’ve eaten your way around the hotels, head to the 4217 complex for an excellent brew at Paradox Coffee Roasters, wings and burgers from Brooklyn Depot, or a gooey woodfired pizza from Salt Meats Cheese.
Also check out… Cute cafe Bumbles (okay, technically it’s Budds Beach but at just a two-minute amble from the bungee bullet).
Broadbeach
Just six kilometres south of Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach is a food lover’s mecca, with everything from Bavarian to Middle Eastern, through to high-class Japanese and vegetarian on the menu.
If you’re into sharing, pull up a seat kitchen-side at Social Eating House + Bar for a theatrical dining experience, or keep the carbs coming with authentic pasta and pizza at Rivea Italian
We’re not surprised Kiyomi scored a coveted chef’s hat in the 2019 Nation Good Food Guide. Tucked neatly away inside The Star Grand, this modern Japanese restaurant hits all the right notes. (Read our full review in this post.)
If Asian fusion is more your bag, check out Mamasan Kitchen + Bar (hello, spanner crab ravioli dumplings!) and Hideaway Kitchen and Bar.
From yellowtail sashimi and Thai-style ceviche, through to dumplings and wontons, every variety of Asian street food garners a mention here. Wash it down with imported Asian brewskies or a local Balter can.
Looking for breakfast? If there was an award for the prettiest cafe on the coast, we’d give it to Elk Espresso. Always buzzing and always adorable, this Broadie cafe starts the day with the likes of blueberry pannacotta, and basil and chilli scrambled eggs with goats cheese, and warms up to hearty salads and burgers at lunchtime.
Also check out… Epic vegetarian eats at The Cardamom Pod (also in Southport).
Mermaid Beach
Once only seen as a strip of the Gold Coast Highway where Sizzler and Hooters laid their claim, Mermaid Beach is now a hot foodie haunt with everything from meatballs to perfectly flaky croissants.
If you like your margaritas spicy and your empanadas stuffed with pumpkin and salted caramel, slip into Bonita Bonita for blow-your-mind Mexican. While you’re waiting for a table, road-test their cocktail list in sister bar, Bon Bon, right next door.
Consistently rating its pants off on the Gold Coast dining scene since the doors opened in 2010, Little Truffle is on an unassuming corner but once you step inside, it’s so Frenchy; so chic. We love the Monday to Thursday three-course deal for $60.
Looking for something more casual? After lighting up the backstreets of Miami with Paddock Bakery, the owners decided to open Bam Bam Bakehouse in homage to artisan croissants through to a full bistro menu. Order the croissant French toast. Don’t ask questions.
When we said Elk would win the award for cutest cafe on the coast, we had forgotten all about everyone’s favourite Disney movie (and also Gold Coast cafe), Little Mermaid.
Just like Ariel’s high notes, Little Mermaid’s menu is filled with sweetness, from the Nutella & Grilled Strawberry Toastie with flaked sea salt at breakfast time, to jugs of rose-infused sangria and Stone & Wood beer-battered fish and chips come nightfall.
Also check out… Etsu Izakaya for sublime Japanese.
Nobby Beach
Ten years ago, Nobby Beach wouldn’t have been a blip on the food radar, but this beachside strip now has some of the coast’s most-wanted menus and linger-all-afternoon vibes.
Hellenika could be credited with starting the movement, the Greek baby of restaurateur Simon Gloftis, that will want you leaving more with every mouthful.
From zucchini chips to wood-fired octopus and melty lamb ribs, you can’t go wrong here. But if we were the betting type, we’d put our money on the $88 signature banquet, which takes the decision-making out of the equation so you can just indulge in the seemingly endless stream of dips, saganaki, calamari, salty pork belly, fish, salad, baked lamb and greek sweets.
If you’ve got a hankering for Cocowhip, superfood salad or big ‘ol bowl of sweet potato fries, wander down to the beachfront to BSKT. You can downward dog before or after you eat with their yoga studio just upstairs.
For a slice of Italiano in Nobby Beach, intimate pizza and wine bar Gemellini (sister restaurant of Gemelli in Broadbeach) is ready and waiting to serve you with piping hot, cheesy arancini, traditional pizzas and nonna’s secret bolognese recipe.
Also check out… The Yard for shakshuka eggs by morning and cocktails and cuca tins by afternoon.
Miami
A blink-and-you’ll-miss it suburb snuggled in between Nobby Beach and Burleigh Heads, the Gold Coast’s Miami is less ’80s TV cop dramas and South Beach pastels, more hipster grunge and vegan delights.
Housed in a cute cottage, Paddock Bakery brought queue-inducing dippy eggs and salted caramel cruffins to the backstreets of Miami in 2014, and locals have been addicted ever since. We don’t know what we love more – the purple eggs (poached eggs served over house woodfired toast, slathered in beetroot and za’atar puree and topped with fetta) or the eggy custard tarts… or the, well, everything!
Head to Greenhouse Canteen when you want to treat your body like a temple and your Instagram feed like a boss. Working under the tagline, “Cruelty-free and killing it”, you can expect brain-tricking dishes like smoked jackfruit enchiladas with turmeric rice, cucumber guacamole, sour cream and pickled cabbage, and an epic plant-based grazing board.
If cheap and cheerful Chinese is more your cup of (Jasmine) tea, Miami Rice will keep your belly happy and Kung Po your taste buds with Malaysian and Thai dishes sidling up alongside your chow mein and Cantonese crispy roast duck.
Also check out… Miami Marketta for a smorgasbord of food truck eats and live music every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night under the fairy lights.
Burleigh Heads
The list of epic eats in Burleigh Heads is as long as the sets of perfectly peeling waves curling around the headland, best watched from a picnic rug on the hill. From beachfront fine dining to rooftop bars and backstreet secrets, you’ll feel completely satiated here.
The fresh catches flown in twice-daily, the crisp, white tablecloths and the smooth-talking sommelier are just a few of the reasons why we’re sure the judges awarded The Fish House a chefs hat (again)  in the 2019 Australian Good Food Guide. The views and the tasting menu are what takes it over the line from fine to freakin’-fabulous-every-time for us.
Across the road, in prime beachfront territory, Rick Shores (named one of the Australian Financial Review‘s 2018 Top 100 Restaurants) offers up its trademark Thai twist, with goodies like crispy tofu sliders with pickled kimchi through to sticky pork belly with wok-fried pak choi and yellow peach.
For casual eats and curl-your-toes coffee, head to Canteen Coffee and Kitchen or local fave Commune.
When the sun starts to shimmy its way down towards the horizon, the rooftop at Justin Lane is where you want to be.
Also check out… Willow Dining Room for tapas by candlelight.
Currumbin
It’s hard to go past the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club – perched on the most impressive piece of waterfront land on the entire coast – but the dreamy, beachy strip of Currumbin has plenty of other food stars in the lineup, too.
Start your day the right way with an acai bowl from the kings of the purple berry, The Salt Mill, or munch on breakfast bruschetta and bircher at Elephant Rock Cafe.
Also check out… Biker hangout Iron and Resin Garage on a Sunday for great coffee, live tunes and a rolling roster of food trucks.
Coolangatta
Home of pro surfers, one of the coast’s most famous breaks, and right on the border of New South Wales, Coolangatta is Queensland’s final frontier when it comes to beachfront eats done right.
If you’re into cafe hopping, you’ve found your zen. Plan to spend a morning at longtime local fave Cafe Dbar, then check out Rockleigh Cafe (can you say all day brunch?!) and Black Sheep Espresso Baa, which you’ll find in The Strand.
Make a sneaky sidestep to Griffith St Larder. They do a mean breakfast, but let’s face it, with the sweet treats being dealt from their window, we know it’s all about the doughnuts. And the cakes. And the muffins. (Okay, we’ll stop now.)
Later on, tame your tapas cravings at BiN 72 or discover Americana in full swing at Eddie’s Grub House, with burgers, Southern fried free-range chicken, and Texas chilli cheese fries just some of the waistband-stretching wonders on the menu.
But perhaps our favourite food baby on this end of the coast comes from Tupe Aloha for its Mexican delights and tiki cocktails. Because, let’s face it, how can you not love tiki?
Also check out… You can’t leave Coolangatta without a triple scoop from Gelato Messina.
*For more ideas, check out our 48 hours in Coolangatta post.
That should keep you full! Are there any you think we’ve missed? Add your favourite Gold Coast restaurant to the comments below.

Top 10 of 2018
For the first time in a long time, I was able to have two feet on solid ground for an entire year. My personal life managed to avoid having grand tragedies for an entire year, and I finally found the sense of stability I was looking for.
As a result, it felt like I was finally able to enjoy watching movies in a way I couldn’t in previous years. It really made me aware of how half of the moviegoing experience is what you bring to it. Sometimes a movie reaches you, and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes you watch something at a time when you shouldn’t and as a result it lands with a thud. Sometimes you watch something at the exact right moment and it hits a homerun. It’s impossible to watch every movie in ideal circumstances. It’s impossible to pretend that we did.
So I’m not going to pretend my Top 10 is filled with the objectively best films of 2018. I don’t know what that list would look like, or what it should be.  I don’t think anyone does. Instead this list is one of the films that stuck with me the most throughout the year. The films that managed to make me think or smile or cry at a moment when I needed to think or smile or cry. They are the films that had the most value to me at the end of the year. I saw 190 new releases throughout 2018, and these are the ones that managed to connect with me the most. There’s something to that, I think. Or well, at least, I hope.
10. Game Night
I was having a tough time filling this spot on my list. In my head it became a slot for a movie I enjoyed but with some type of reservation. The one thing they all had in common was that they would make me feel smart for including it in my Top 10. Black Panther, Burning, If Beale Street Could Talk, Widows, The Favourite... all films that would certainly make me look like I understood the film year I was talking about. Look at me! I know what we are supposed to care about! I get it. And I probably could have written a good rundown of my enjoyment of each of those films if I wanted. “I liked it, with some reservations!” was certainly was the basis of my Top 10 of 2017 list.
However, while trolling through that tier of “I liked it, with some reservations!” films I saw my review of Game Night, and in what felt like a divine moment, I knew what was going to end up making the list. Game Night is an over the top comedy that was squarely aimed right at my heart from the moment the two leads met while playing bar trivia. Broad yet smart, willing to hide gags in its plot that I didn’t realize existed until months after and filled with top-notch comedic performances we should have talked about more (we failed you, Jesse Plemmons), Game Night is the type of film that lends itself to being rewatched time and time again when you’re having a bad day. It’s not fancy, but in it’s weird, “people getting sucked into planes” way it’s comforting. Movies like that matter just as much as the ones that make you feel like you are using your full IQ to understand. So thank you Game Night for the laughs.
9. Shoplifters
In what may be the biggest cinematic crime of 2018, my dad called me during the climatic scene of Shoplifters. He called me so much that he bypassed the Do Not Disturb function on my phone. Thinking it was an emergency, I stepped outside the theater to call my Dad and realize that he wanted help with his Roku (a machine I do not own) and that he needed help with picking a movie on Netflix (after six minutes, he finally went with the suggestion of Outlaw King).
It’s not very often that I get jealous of the critics who get screeners and get invited to screenings, who are able to make careers out of seeing everything and anything and figuring out what is worth other people’s time. But in that moment, I did. I wish I had the time and resources to go back and see the six minutes of Shoplifters I missed. I feel like I would be able to rank it much higher on this top ten if I did. Shoplifters is a gorgeous movie about what it means to be a family, and what we are willing to do to keep together as one. It’s emotional, it’s heartwrenching, but it’s always filled with love. I wish I could have seen the moments where the story reached its peaks, instead of standing outside, looking at a photo of Nicole Kidman in Destroyer while going through my Dad’s Netflix queue with him.
On the bright side, my dad did enjoy Outlaw King. So, at least one of us got something out of that phone call.
8. Wildlife
Finding yourself is one of the hardest things to do. It’s true if you are a young teen trying to make sense of who you are going to be. It’s true if you are a man who is trying to find a new career after years of thinking yourself to be something else. It’s true if you are a woman who thought of herself as a wife and mother and suddenly realized that there were other aspects of herself that were waiting to be explored. Finding yourself is hard. And it is an endless process.
Wildlife paints this truth in a lovely, understated way. Finding yourself isn’t as grand and lush as cinema usually presents it to be. Usually, it’s quiet and kind of messy. Usually, there are hurt people in your wake. Living your best life might lead to collateral damage to others. Wildlife manages to let this be a truth without letting it overwhelm you in sadness. It’s a minor miracle in that sense.
7. Cold War
My expectations were high for Cold War, and in some ways I left disappointed. It wasn’t the perfect, tragic love story I thought it was going to be. In particular, the beginning of the love story at its center was too opaque for my personal taste and the ending too on the nose.
However, I haven’t stopped thinking about Cold War since I left the theater. It’s the kind of film that stays in your mind, the kind that makes you want to read everything you can about what other people are saying about. Cold War is the film that revitalizes the inner film-lover in a person and that’s invaluable in a world filled with thousands of releases to sift through on a yearly basis.
And on a technical level? It’s perfect. It’s cinematography doesn’t waste a single shot. It’s soundtrack is perfectly compiled, with songs being rearranged and translated to let you know that the world is changing. It doesn’t dilly-dally between scenes and is willing to let less be more. Plus, it has the best coats you’ll see on screen all year! Maybe that doesn’t mean anything to you, but it means so much to me. A top ten worthy achievement, if you ask me.
6. What They Had
What They Had was saddled with the weirdest release schedule of any film I wanted to see all year. It was in and out of New York theaters in a blink of an eye, and I was lucky to be able to catch it when it randomly emerged at one of the New Jersey arthouses I frequent. I saw it in a theater without heat, and the fact that I didn’t feel like complaining about how cold I was while seeing it probably nominates it for conclusion on this top ten list all on its own.
What They Had has turned out to be a hidden gem of the 2018. A moving portrait of a family in various stages of crisis, who are trying to figure out the central crisis of the moment: what to do about the mother who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and the father who is unwilling to let her go and recognize the end of their love story. From top to bottom, What They Had boasts one of the best ensembles of the year. Robert Forrester especially manages to hit the exact right notes of a gruff father who doesn’t know how to handle that his personal world is ending.
What They Had was forgotten in theaters, but hopefully it is able to find an audience when it reaches streaming. It deserves one.
5. The Old Man & The Gun
The Old Man & The Gun is many things, but most strikingly, it is a tribute to the age of the movie star. We don’t have many of them left now. Famous actors are either rending their garments in a bid to gain awards, or signing up for whatever superhero movie will have them in a bid to gain money. There’s no more room for performances that get by on a twinkle in the eye and a suave set of charisma. Cinema doesn’t have a place for them anymore, and The Old Man & the Gun seems to recognize it while giving Robert Redford a swan song for the ages.
It’s a performance that’s going to be forgotten by most awards giving bodies, but it’s my favorite performance of the year easy. Redford charms and charms and charms and you can easily tell why so many bank tellers are willing to just give away their money to this man. He cons the audience just as well as he cons his marks. It’s not all just easy smiles and winning politeness though, Redford lets you know the depth that lurks beneath the surface. The trouble his character has letting his old life go, the trouble his character has doing anything else. It’s moving in a way that a film about a bunch of old bank robbers shouldn’t be.
There’s no greater character study in cinema this year. And no film had a more perfect ending in my estimation. I’m sad to see Robert Redford retire, but more importantly I’m sad that movies like this are becoming such a rarity.
4. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
Back in October, I was lucky enough to be at the NYCC panel where they screened the first 35 minutes of the film. And even though the animation wasn’t complete and even though I hadn’t seen the full story, even then I knew, that there was’t going to be a better animated film in 2018.
2018 in animation for the most part felt tiring. There were a lot of sequels that were generally good, but nothing awe-inspiring. There were a lot of dump-offs whose names I couldn’t remember if I tried. There was the problematic Isle of Dogs and the uninspired The Grinch. For the longest time I was worried that the genre was hitting a rough patch, happier to do what worked in the past than forge ahead and try new things.
Thankfully, Spider-man swooped in to save the day. The animation was inventive and bold and playful. The story was funny and heartfelt and fun. Everything about it felt fresh and exciting, and like a bold call to animation studios everywhere that more could be done with the medium. Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse was a reminder of why I love animation and why I love comics. It changed the game by going back to what was lovable about the mediums it was working from, and became the most fun film of the year in the process.
3. Can You Ever Forgive Me?
I hated all the parts of myself that I could see in Lee Israel. The loneliness. The sense that life owed you more than you were given. The belief that you deserved to be recognized more for how smart you are. It wasn’t close to being a mirror image, but it felt like a warning shot all the same: you could end up like this if you wanted to, you can see the ugliest parts of yourself become the most prominent.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? isn’t a comfortable movie to watch. It’s not one that leaves room for fuzzy feelings. It’s a film that rolls around in some of the ugliest of human emotions, but it’s a film that lets you understand where those emotions are coming from. It paints a full portrait of the criminal and her life, and in doing so lets you become empathetic to a character who may seem like the most loathsome of people. The thing that the film doesn’t let you forget though is that we all have that type of loathsome person within us, that we all can end up becoming our worst selves if we’re just as lonely and desperate. It has a beating heart underneath all the ugliness that I found impossible to resist.
2. Eighth Grade
I grew up in the millennial era, but there is so much about Eighth Grade that I found intensely relatable. All the scenes where Kayla spends minutes trying to get the perfect angle for her snapchat feed? I saw my Saturdays wasting millions of hours posing in front of my digital camera in a sad attempt to get the perfect Myspace photo. The scenes where Kayla awkwardly tries to fit in with friend groups and ends up striking out? I saw my one time valiantly trying to find a friend group of my own. The scene at the end where she talks to her dad wondering if he’s disappointed in her? It’s the kind of talk I always wish I did have with my dad.
Eighth Grade is every painful moment you remember living through when you were a young teen, and its a miracle it didn’t end up being the most miserable film of the year. Instead it finds the humanity in the humiliations, and the hope that lives at the end of the day. Maybe, your past was awkward and lonely but it doesn’t mean the future can’t be and it doesn’t mean you can’t find pride in yourself at the end of the day. The fact that Kayla is able to do that ends up being one of the most moving things I have scene at the movies this year.
1. Minding the Gap
I wasn’t expecting much from a documentary about skateboarders who board to escape their troubled home lives, especially after seeing the dreadful mid90s the week before. What I got was the biggest emotional catharsis of 2018, one that was so strong that I had to pause the movie and watch it over two days because I had just become so emotional.
I don’t have a ton in common with the subjects of Minding the Gap. I am a white female who grew up in the New Jersey suburbs. They are for the most part minority men who grew up in the Rust Belt. I wasn’t expecting to find much of a common ground with the film, but it ended up hitting on some hard truths I don’t like thinking about in my daily life. The way your parents shape you. How your parents can hurt you deeply, but you still love them anyway (even if it’s not the wisest thing). The worries that all you took from your parents are their worst qualities and how you won’t be able to avoid passing down similar hurts to the ones you love. And most importantly, the things we use to escape those fears. The hobbies and friendships that help us get through the day to day.
Watching Minding the Gap was like going to therapy in some ways, and it was proof that film has a way of unraveling in us the things we don’t want to face while letting us reach the emotional catharsises we need. It may seem like a throwaway documentary about skateboarding, but it’s the most essential film of the year to me. It still brings about a strong, pure emotional reaction when I think about it months later.
I didn’t know that was possible with film. But like with many things, I was proven wrong.

The default solution choice is for videos up to 30 minutes in length right after editing. For longer videos please select the suitable alternative. Do you want your film to function smooth, expertly-edited shots, or a rough, handheld camera look? It is all there to do. For example, appear at Melancholia by Lars von Trier the opening scenes were shot with a super high speed camera, which renders as a fluid, graceful slow motion. Most of the rest of the movie is shot with a handheld, or shaky cam," setting the tone for the emotional and spiritual conflicts that ripple by way of the film. When 1 of the two ideal high quality levels is selected, the Develop photo pane proposes some extra choices at its bottom shown in the following capture. The Lens drop down list lets you decide on some special lenses, like the Depth of field one which forces the focus distance to 250 cm with a limited depth of field (by default, the lens is a pinhole with an infinite depth of field). The Fisheye and Spherical lenses are utilised in special situations that are not treated in this tip.

Gaana Vs Saavn - Who'll Become The Spotify Of India?
We don’t have all our favourite songs stored when we want to listen to them, nor do they play on the radio when we want them. And that is when apps like Gaana and Saavn come to our mind. Gaana launched its new version V 5.0.0 recently which made us ask a question – Will it be better than Saavn? We have been using Saavn for quite some time now. It would be interesting to see what the new update of Gaana beholds.
We will start by comparing the user interface of both the apps. On one hand, We have Saavn which has has a very neat, clutter-free user interface which is soothing to the eye. The header of the app consists of 2 simple options: Language Selection and Search Bar. The language selection is really helpful to a user to toggle between the number of languages quickly. There is a row below it with 3 options: Top 15, Surprise Me and Download. The ‘Top 15’ option queues the trending fifteen songs in your playlist. Whereas, ‘Surprise Me’ actually surprises by loading a mix of some unheard songs from old and new movies. ‘Download’ gives you purchasing details of its premium plans. The other options available at a quick access to the user are his own playlist, New Releases, Chart Toppers which includes chart toppers from different languages, Radio, Moods & Genres and Top Playlists.
While on the other hand, The new Gaana app has a sharp black theme making its options highlight; completely opposing to Saavn. The header has an ‘Options’ bar to the left and a search bar to the right. Unlike Saavn that lets you shuffle between languages from the main screen, in Gaana you have to go to Settings > Select Language and then choose Language Preferences. The home screen of the app has New Releases in the top followed by Playlist of the Hour, Top Charts and Radio Mirchi. Gaana also has Music Videos which is an advantageous feature not present in Saavn. The home screen has an infinite scroll because of which you will have endless supply of music to choose from. We wonder if this list will end up showing the entire 3 million songs in Gaana’s database.
The music streaming for both the apps is equally good. On one hand, Gaana plays my music playlist smoothly while on other Saavn has a major drawback of is its advertisements which are played for 10 seconds! And sometimes, these ads play at the end of every song. The music player of both the apps looked crisp. But, We loved Gaana’s music player as it gave us the options to see the lyrics and the video of the song instantly. If you just want to listen Bollywood & English music then Gaana is nothing less than a royal feast to you. Gaana is more focussed on Bollywood and English music focusing less on regional music. Saavn scores some brownie points here by putting more focus on regional languages. Personally, I was elated to find the lesser-known artist Rekha Bharadwaj’s music was available aplenty on Gaana, whereas Saavn returned no results.

Once again we are lucky enough to be in Sydney when the arts festival is on, last year we enjoyed performances, exhibitions and art installations and since we are now living here we were able to see much more this year.
Our first date was with the ‘Hall of Mirrors’ in Meriton festival village, we chose an especially hot day to go of course and it was just our luck that after queuing for 10 minutes they had a ‘technical issue’ (which we heard happening; a woman putting her foot through the wooden floor…) so we  had to sit in the scorching sun for half an hour- they even brought umbrellas for shade, we made the most of it by getting some ice cream! It was worth the wait! I was genuinely surprised at how easy it was to get lost, the way the mirrors reflected around it sometimes felt like we were in a room with hundreds of people, it was very intricately designed and we spent a good half an hour playing hide and seek, getting lost and taking silly photos before attempting to find the way out. Afterwards we sat in the festival village eating loaded chilli chips and watching some live music, but mostly enjoying ‘people watching’ especially some of the children dancing on stage – super cute.
The following weekend we booked tickets to see a performance called I.D. which was a spectacle of both acrobatics, breakdancing and circus acts, truly incredible. I was blown away by the troupes unique acts like trapeze, bmx trial biking and a trampoline wall, my favourite performance was a hand balancing act on chairs a good 8 metres high. We had near enough front row seats and were lucky enough to watch a panel after the show with the director and a few of the cast, it turns out that he is the same director of the performance we watched last year La Vérita, no wonder it was so good! Here is a video link to the ‘trailer’ for this heart racing performance to give you an idea of what we were lucky enough to see!
The last weekend of the festival we had tickets to ‘The Beach’ a massive ball pit installation with over 1 million balls! Thankfully we booked as we heard from friends that without tickets the queue was averaging 2 hours! We chose a 9am slot which was perfect as another scorching weekend meant it was already very hot by that point, although it’s indoor/underground at ‘the cutaway’ in barangaroo there was no air con. There were a lot of children and the only main rule was not to jump in without looking because of the possibility of squashing someone! I was genuinely surprised at how deep it was, being the shorty that I am it was honestly an effort not to be ‘drowned’ you can understand how easy it would be not to see someone in the pit, as full grown men were popping their heads out of nowhere like daisies! It was so relaxing, but you couldn’t help but laugh at the feeling of slowly being engulfed like quick sand! The atmosphere was great, there were mirrors surrounding the ball pit that made it feel endless and the only thing I felt was missing was music or even some atmospheric sounds of being by the beach, the sound of waves etc, but there were beach chairs to sit on and some rogue inflatables that you could chill in, that was pretty good and made for some great photos. After an hour we left and walked out to see an unsurprisingly long queue as the free admission started.
We headed to a nearby market and ended up buying some beautiful paintings by a local artist, before catching a bus to Chinatown so we could watch the lion dances which had been going on for a week in various parts of Sydney. I love watching the traditional dancing and we were hoping to get good seats to watch a dance on poles but we were unprepared for the huge crowd of people that turned up. We split up as Greg was tall enough to see over the crowds, I however managed to find somewhere to look in between heads. The dance was incredible, I didn’t realise that they have two people under the outfit and the choreography must have taken ages to perfect, trusting each other to not drop or slip off was heart pounding. I wish we could have stayed to watch with front row seats but it was time to make our way to our final events for Sydney festival.
There is an art venue called carriageworks, an old train carriage factory that has plenty of space for large scale artworks, tonight it played host to a night market which we had  bought tickets for, we arrived early and visited a free exhibition called ‘The Scent of Sydney, for my arty friends, I wish I could have spent longer as it was a storytellers dream! It was an insight into people’s lives where you could listen into some stories told by locals accompanied by these powders that smelt strongly of odours associated with the stories, some were pleasant outdoor smells but some were rather unpleasant, I cannot do the experience justice as you really had to be there of course but here is a link for those who are interested.

The night market was a much bigger event than I had anticipated, and the entire area was full with people in about 5 minutes even though we arrived early. We had a proper feast, fresh cut salami, a Syrian beef wrap, a Chinese chicken satay salad, real sausage hot dog, tiramisu for pudding and Nutella crepe. Luckily we found a place to sit and eat where there were some silent movies playing (with subtitles) about cooking around the world. There was a live DJ and the banquet hall felt like something from Hogwarts it was huge! A great night, I don’t think I will ever be bored of  trying new food, a night with good food is always going to be a good 😊
Seeing in the lunar new year with fireworks and our housemate Douglas was such good fun, we had a great spot right next to Sydney opera house and Greg managed to get some stunning photos. I can’t imagine being there over new year as it was busy enough for me and there was less than half the people there! The harbour was full of Chinese lion dancers, bringing good luck to the shops, and the zodiac animals were reinvented as huge lantern installations, we walked around getting photos and finished the night with ice cream.
Our final experience for lunar new year was visiting Spice Alley with our work friends Laura and Nat, the alley had been decorated and spread onto the neighbouring street with performances, workshops and food tasting tents. A shame we didn’t have longer as we had a film to see but there were free charicature artists, intricate Chinese sugar work, Karate workshops, lantern making, the list goes on! I feel so lucky to be living in such a vibrant city where so much is happening I just need to make an effort to find these things!
