can’t imagine the watcher decision wasn’t informed by the success of dropout, a streaming service I and many other people happily pay for, but this news undeniably feels like a disappointment in comparison, and am trying to articulate why:
1. amount of content. I can’t speak to when dropout first launched (I think I started subscribing late 2019?), but I know that when I joined, it already felt like there was an enormous backlog of series to explore—not to mention the amount that was also uploaded to youtube, albeit on a delay (I know I watched at least the first half of fantasy high s1 on youtube, if not the whole thing, and by the time I signed up for dropout, there was also s1 of unsleeping city, bloodkeep, tiny heist on the horizon, and s2 of fantasy high currently live streaming. not to mention the number of full episodes they'd uploaded to youtube of um actually, game changer, breaking news, etc. and how much more was then available on dropout)
I don't know what conversations were happening behind the scenes at dropout, I don't know in real-time what was subscriber-only and what was getting uploaded to youtube, or what the breakdown was of series getting created and solely released on dropout in comparison to content they were releasing for free. all I know is that when I heard about d20 and wanted to check it out, I was able to watch a good chunk via youtube, enough to know that I wanted more, and also to know that dropout had a whole lot else to offer that I was also curious about.
so that's one of the things that feels immediately different about the watcher announcement. they're teasing new series that will be available, but for the moment, it seems like everything that will currently be on the new platform is already available for free on youtube (to clarify, because there's been a lot of confusion on this front, they are not deleting their old content off youtube. all those videos are staying there). there's also a question of release schedule — are they talking about weekly episode releases of one season airing at a time, as was their youtube model, with stretches in between? I guess I come back to, if you're trying to go subscriber-only going forward (with the caveat that the first ep of a season will also get released on youtube, and also with the caveat that obviously dropout had to reach a certain level of success before it was able to release content at the volume, consistency and quality it does now), are you creating enough to justify the sort of wholesale transition they seem to be implementing? i'm not sure the answer is yes
2. paying/supporting artists. no one's arguing that you shouldn't pay or support artists, and there are incredibly valid critiques of how youtube hamstrings creativity and the issues with being beholden to advertisers. more creative freedom is a good thing. more independent artists is a good thing.
that said, it feels like there's a disconnect between what supporters are looking for from where there money is going and how watcher wants to spend it. the video really emphasized wanting to make tv-quality productions, and that they feel like they've hit a ceiling with the youtube business model in terms of achieving that aim, but are watcher fans looking for tv-quality productions? of the new series they mentioned, travel seemed like a pretty big element, which is obviously expensive. I think of new shows released on dropout, and they've clearly got solid production value behind them, but they're also still all filmed on a set (it's 3am in a warehouse!!) — even ambitious and expensive episodes of game changer are still basically shot in the same set of rooms, with the stakes raised from there (the escape room ep, bingo, etc.)
look, I don't work in digital media, and so I don't have a sense of what it costs to put on a show, but I can't help but look at some of watcher's stated ambitions that clearly need to have a significant budget behind them vs something like too many spirits (something I have to imagine has to cost a lot less, but which is just as enjoyable to watch) and wonder if part of the backlash has to do with how it feels like their current revenue is being spent/prioritized
and maybe the problem is that there's just a fundamental disconnect between the kinds of shows watcher wants to make, and what their audience is looking for, but if that's the case, it doesn't feel like moving to a subscriber-only system is the solution

On First Kill and What it Says About Netflix, Media and the Undo Burden Queer Women Have to Carry
Tumblr media
I have no criticisms for First Kill. The people who worked on it did their best with the limited budget and experience they had. Even with its flaws the concept was good and the story of the two girls alone managed to get more viewership than many Netflix series that are constantly renewed.
I will however talk about Netflix. I have been very vocal of my criticism of Netflix in the past but always put that aside so we can promote wlw media on this blog wherever they came from. But it was always blatant how the idea of queer women leads is viewed on the platform.
Netflix initially launched into mainstream culture in great part due to offering diverse shows like Orange is the new Black (a show specifically diverse in terms of women's sexuality, with queer women leads). Shows that were considered alternative and progressive compared to Network TV. After succeeding in gaining popularity because they offered the thing others didn't, Netflix content shifted. Even though investing in creating a quality show with a wlw main couple had paid off in the past they decided being more like network TV was the best strategy. Any attempt at inclusion for queer women was either carefully veiled behind projects that "are not really about the gay girls, the gay girls are just there" like The Prom, promoted without a hint of the lgbt content like Everything Sucks and Teenage Bounty Hunters or not promoted at all like Feria The Darkest Light, The Half of It and I'm Not Ok With This. They were generally given very little room to succeed. Most of the wlw focused projects were never promoted, had unknown actors and given a small budget.
If the project was big, well promoted and expensive it meant the screentime of the queer woman was limited. Even Warrior Nun (based on very gay source material) and Babysitter's Club (with everyone thinking the lead has to be queer) simply gave a side character 2 minutes to be out as a gay girl and called it a day. If they're investing big you can count on the gay woman part to be small. This came to a head when they changed the lead's sexuality in Archive 81 (who was a lesbian with a wife in the original podcast) and made her wife her gay roommate. "And they were roommates!". It was in some ways laughable to what lengths they'd go to because of their need to limit queer women to side characters in big projects they're actually invested in.
But First Kill was a series putting the wlw couple front and center so we had to believe all of the above was a coincidence right? We gave them another chance and they proved everything we had been seeing was right. They set it up to fail and when it didn't they justified the cancellation by saying it didn't succeed enough. That's the thing. It would have succeeded enough if they hadn't set it up to fail so blatantly.
Netflix will rain unbelievable amounts of money to get the biggest names from the TikTok, acting and music worlds to star in their big budget straight cheesy romances. They gave First Kill 10 dollars and candy to paraphrase a person who worked on the show. They were unwilling to pay for the really good, experienced writing team needed to turn a vampire romance story into a well fleshed out TV show. As a result the writing was acceptable for a vampire romance novel but not for live action TV dialogue. They were unwilling to pay for good cgi. As a result the cgi made CW shows look good in comparison. They were unwilling to pay for expensive, popular actors. They were unwilling to pay for any sort of production value. Why? Because they don't have enough faith in projects about queer women to invest in them. But the wlw shows have to succeed anyway or else we confirm their aversion to invest in our projects was right. We are asked and creators are asked to make a hit out of something without given the proper tools and then told we don't sell.
That is our vicious circle with Netflix even if it's proven that when money and work is put in to a project that centers wlw, people will come. Even if millions are lost on failed projects that center straight ppl. Even in a world where Gen Z is set to rule the world and it's a generation that is more and more queer.
Queer women are expected to consume projects that are lesser than those of straight ppl and even those of gay men. Unfortunately, we live in that messed up intersection of misogyny and homophobia that makes investing in us somehow the last risk to take. As they liberally throw money away on worthless trash. But it's straight trash so...
Good news is Network TV is dying. Netflix imitating their focus on a default basic straight audience (and the white gay pretty boys they can fetishize) does not seem like a good strategy for the future. Other services that are putting real effort into bringing queer women out of the TV margins will become the entertainment providers of the most sexually diverse generation of women we've ever had. Let's bring about that future as soon as possible. Go watch Paper Girls, Yellowjackets, Harley Quinn animated series, Dickinson, Crush... If you're a woman, or non-binary person, and not straight, fuck Netflix. Cancel your Netflix account.
Do fear for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Expect as little from Netflix as possible. That's what they're willing to give you.

Kissin Cousins Review
Tumblr media
After Viva Las Vegas went over budget, Colonel Parker as the technical advisor pushed the panic button. The next immediate film had its budget slashed and everything was rushed just to make back any money lost. The production was very cheap despite a somewhat ambitious story of having Elvis play 2 characters.
Despite being made after Viva Las Vegas, Kissin Cousins came out first making for a very jarring experience if seen back to back. A lot of people HATE this movie because of the concept and cheap production, indicating that Colonel's plan didn't work as he expected. After all, if you only spend a grand total of a $1 million dollars on a movie, you only need $1,000,001 to make a profit. Does Kissin Cousins have some good parts to it or is it all bad and should never be mentioned again? Let's find out.
Tumblr media
Kissin Cousins is a pleasant opening song. It's not something that blows you away but it's a nice little ditty with cute art. It makes me wonder why we never had an animated film as those were usually way cheaper than a regular movie. Yes animation in the 60s wasn't as big of an industry as it is now, but if Colonel wanted to value cheap production, animation would've been the way to go.
We get introduced to the conflict of the movie: The military wants a military base on the Tatums mountain land in the Smokey Mountains. The Tatums don't want to sell as they don't trust the government. As stereotypical as this sounds, this was a pretty common experience. The only issue I have with this element is that they want to show this as the Air Force, but everyone is dressed in Army uniforms. Josh starts off wearing a more accurate uniform but we quickly do away with that. A sign already that no one cared enough to make things accurate.
Tumblr media
We also see very quickly that this movie is so cheap they can't even film b-roll footage of the real Appalachian Mountains. Instead we get Southern California mountains and Hollywood sets. As much as it sounds like a nitpick, the mountains are a mega important part of the movie. Depicting the real mountains would add more immersion into the story by showcasing how these people live. Smokey Mountain Boy as a song doesn't stand out on its own. It does sound lovely in the context of the movie. It sounds like the type of song a military man would sing. We get a dumb joke about mountaineers not knowing how to spell and the girls not knowing what Jodie looks like. If you look very closely we get another sign that the movie is cheap in the form of a faint yellow line in the middle of the screen. That's meant to be the filter that allows Elvis to play both Josh and Josh at once. More on that later.
We find out that Jodie actually isn't their brother. He's a cousin too and my whole world just blew up. This whole time I thought they were all siblings because he lived with them like he's their brother. There's Gold in the Mountains is bad. The lip-synching is non-existent. It's very apparent that neither Azalea or Selena's actress are actually singing. They sound nothing like they're speaking voices. I don't think this song was really necessary and could've been cut if it wasn't for a quota. Ma calls Jodie her nephew and man I want to know this man's story. There's so many ways you can go about this and show how this could significantly impact his character and his decisions.
Tumblr media
Pappy is an amazing character. Arthur O'Connell really shows his range as he sounds nothing like Pop Kwimper from Follow That Dream. Despite being the same character of the government disdaining patriarch on paper, you really get the idea that this is a completely different person. Pappy and Pop are similar but are not the same. What I don't like is that his clothes are seen as dirty and full of holes. Jodie and the sisters don't have that problem so unless Pappy just got done wrestling some pigs, this is purely for laughing at dirty uncivilized Southerners. While it is unfortunate that some of them lived that way, this isn't the Tatums' situation.
Ma's an amazing character too and it only highlights my point that she wouldn't accept anyone in the family to be walking around in unkempt clothing. She would've immediately patched up any holes she found. You get the idea that she isn't someone to push around. She respects Pappy's authority but she also has her own authority. Ma is willing to flip Jodie right on his butt if he disrespects her despite Jodie easily being bigger than her. In real life, an average sized woman being able to flip over what I consider to be a 200 lb man would be super impressive. We clearly get the idea that Pappy loves it. He wants his wife to be a strong woman who doesn't take disrespect from anyone.
Tumblr media
This whole scene insults Southerners by having them own a Confederate Flag in the house, eat possums and other stereotypical "white trash" food like this is a regular occasion. Like it's something they take pride in eating and wouldn't want to eat anything else. Note: people only eat that when there's nothing else available. It would only make sense if they were proud of Ma being able to make do with what little they had but again this isn't what they're going through. They have pigs so it makes no sense why they still eat possums outside of stereotyping.
We get a visual gag of the captain turning green. This is such a cheap special effect. It looks like they just shined a green light over his face like we're in a cartoon. So bizarre and only exists because "haha isn't mountain food so disgusting." Totally unnecessary especially with how long they drag the joke of no one knowing what an ICBM is. In real life, if this family was as ignorant as the movie makes them out to be, they would not survive.
Tumblr media
One Boy, Two Little Girls is a very boring ballad. It adds nothing to the movie and is just filler. We already got a song with him singing to the sisters and learn nothing new. You can just cut to Josh talking to Azalea and Selena about how to convince Pappy. This whole interaction between Josh with Azalea and Selena is weird. We're supposed to think he digs both of them.
Catchin On Fast which is just as shallow. The song itself isn't bad, but in the context of the movie it comes out of nowhere. Josh just randomly picks Azalea over Selena. Yes we get the drama that Selena has to get married first, but outside of that there's no reason for him to pick Azalea. Yes it could be a matter of Josh preferring brunettes but it's never established to be the reason why he likes Azalea more. Admittedly I love that Selena isn't jealous of Azalea or mad that Josh picked her sister over her. In a different Elvis movie we know that would've been a conflict that lasted throughout the whole movie.
Tumblr media
We get introduced to Midge and Jodie completely looks smitten. This is a completely different side of him. It's implied that he's had relations with more than one Kittyhawk woman but becomes such a different man around Midge. In that moment, none of the other women matter anymore. Midge is the only woman on his mind and you have to wonder what about her captures his attention. Maybe it's because she's not immediately throwing herself at him or seems interested in him at all. Just by this scene alone, Midge does not give a single care that he's staring at her. If anything she straights up ignores him after they're introduced.
Watching Azalea interact with the Kittyhawks when they give them their own bikinis is the only difference we get. Azalea actively stands up to them and puts them in their place. She doesn't tolerate their actions. Ma puts her foot down when she sees that this turned everything upside down and I can understand where she's coming from. If Azalea and Selena are disrespecting her and the Kittyhawks are causing nothing but trouble, of course she would be upset.
Tumblr media
The reporter exposes their plan to get the mountain base and the plan is all coming apart when the general contacts the captain about going up to the mountain. The captain orders Midge to go to Ma and try to smooth things over. Despite this being the 60s, the captain treats Midge like any other subordinate. He's not overly harsh or lenient with her just because she's a woman. Now that's gender equality. She runs into Jodie and at first we think Jodie's going to act like a pig and a wolf. And he does act like that, but what makes this movie better than most is that he gets his comeuppance. Yes it's meant to be a source of comedy but given the 60s, Midge being allowed to push back against horny men is incredible. She grins and bears it when it's the other military men because a lot of them may outrank her and pushing back would be horrific. But since Jodie has no authority over her, she pushes back. In other movies Jodie would be a creep who escalates his advancements after every rejection. But he doesn't. He saw the look on Midge's face when she thought he got hurt. She doesn't actually hate him, she just hates how forward and physical he is.
Based on their social situations, you can clearly see how it influences these women's reactions to male attention. Midge is just so used to men seeing her for her body and nothing else that when in a situation where she can push back against that behavior she will do it, while the Kittyhawks hardly ever see men so any attention or interaction with men would be like giving kids candy after denying them that for so long. And whether he fully realizes it or not, Jodie has to acknowledge that Midge really isn't like other girls but her own person. So he changes his approach to serenading Midge with Tender Feeling. Easily the best song in the movie and actually adds depth to Jodie's character. Even though he's a cocky jock, this song actually matters by showing that he's capable of being more than that. It still fails but even when it fails the only thing on Jodie's mind isn't a notch on his bed post it's WEDDING BELLS. He had full choice of any Kittyhawk out there to marry. He could've married any one of them at any time. But he doesn't want to be with any of them. He wants Midge. You can make an argument that as soon as he saw Midge for the first time, he wanted to marry her. Unbelieveable how this side character in a cheap Elvis production actually has some type of character arc.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Azalea tries to convince Ma about changing her mind. I know the movie wants to make us feel bad about it, but we don't have any reason to feel bad. I don't feel anything for this relationship. Outside of Josh being different than the other mountain men, there's no real reason for her to like him. I care more about Hezekiah missing Pappy and he's a dog.
So they go to find Pappy and all of the men except for the captain and Jodie get captured by the Kittyhawk women. For once an Elvis character doesn't like being appreciated by multiple women. I guess it's meant to show how Josh is more "civilized" than Jodie. We get another Joe Esposito appearance in this movie and he actually gets a line.
Tumblr media
Ma actually gets a song lamenting the loss of her husband. Pappy, Won't You Please Come Home is actually a pretty appropriate song. It shows just how much she loves him. The vocals could be better but it doesn't have to be professional because within the context of the movie, Ma isn't a professional singer. Pitch doesn't matter when you're sad.
We find out Pappy got chased by a bear and got stuck in a tree. The wide shot of him being stuck in a tree is so bad. You can tell this is a stunt double since Arthur O'Connell is too old to be doing stuff like this. Even when you can see his face you can tell he's only dangling on a wire and it's not even clear how he's caught. I get we needed something to get Josh on the family's good side but they could've done this a bit better. You would think this would be when Josh and Jodie would have to work together to save Pappy, but I guess that would've just been too hard to film. Again if Jodie had a real character arc this would be the moment when he realizes "hey Josh just isn't doing this because he's told to. He genuinely cares about us. He acts like he's kin."
Tumblr media
We get a good old fashioned hoedown and hi where did all these people come from? Up until now we've had the Tatums and the Kittyhawks as the only people who live on this mountain. So why is there a whole village of people here? It completely changes the Kittyhawk women's reason to exist. If you imply that there's literally no other man on this mountain outside of Jodie, then these women being boy crazy make perfect sense. Now that we know Jodie isn't the only young man, they just look like a stereotype that women are promiscuous.
Barefoot Ballad fits so well with Jodie's character but watch out foot phobic people because it's exactly as it says on the tin. The dancing however, isn't that great. It shows just how rushed this movie's production wise. I guess it could work in that in universe these aren't professionals but as a movie it could be better. This is where the song quota kicks in as we get yet another song in the span of not even five minutes. Once Is Enough is fine but it's still filler. The dancing is still bad as one of them actually falls down and it stayed in the final cut. Based on Pappy's little speech I would've thought he would start singing. Heck even the captain who would later play Grandpa Joe showed he could sing in Willy Wonka so it's not like we couldn't have had a Pappy song.
Tumblr media
After all this time, Jodie finally gets a character moment where he warms up to Josh. While Jodie internally realizes that Josh was alright when he saved Pappy, this would've been the perfect moment to showcase that he's willing to compliment Josh. If only he had more of a role in the movie because what little we get shows a pretty engaging character arc. Midge coming around would've been a natural reason for him to warm up to city folk. I could make a whole post about how I would write his character since there's so much potential.
The Kittyhawk women actually play an important role by sending the general in circles. That's what makes this movie great. Everyone has a part to play even if they start off as a joke. Pappy gets in a drinking contest with the captain. I have to laugh that Jodie managed to snap Pappy's suspenders when Pappy tries to run away. It actually adds to Jodie's claim that he's the champion and therefore strongest man in the mountains. Ma makes it clear that they have to talk things over so Josh and Pappy try to make a deal over a game of checkers. Jodie actually tries to help Josh out by getting the captain sober. If only they took advantage of them looking alike and had Jodie disguise himself as Josh. Jodie would have to swallow his pride because he knows if this deal fails, he would lose Midge as she's a WAC.
Tumblr media
It isn't until Josh comes up with a deal allowing Pappy to continue selling his moonshine without "revenoor" interference. They also get protection and $1000 a month for the land. The deal goes through and everyone ends up happy. The one thing I wish was better explained is how despite all these people being on the mountain, Pappy is somehow the leader. I think if we had so much as a line about how these people came from distant villages would be enough as it's not like the military intended on buying the entire mountain.
Kissin Cousins (Number 2) is a banger of a song and I really like Jodie's twang when he sings but wow the production is cheap. They don't even bother cropping the shot above where you can actually see Lance LeGault (Elvis' body double) in the background. This isn't the first nor only time either. Throughout the movie and during the song when they switch back and forth between Josh and Jodie, we can see his face by accident. Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched had to do something similar when she had to play Samantha and her identical cousin Serena. That episode came out in 1966 and managed to do a better job. A TV show somehow did the same concept better than an actual Hollywood produced film. It's so sad that production was rushed to the point of basic editing mistakes and mistakes in general are left in. Even the ending where the characters hold up "The End" signs feels like this is a cheap high school production instead of a Hollywood movie.
Tumblr media
This movie has several problems. As I've said the production is cheap with songs that are nothing but filler and at times have noticeable mistakes, Josh is a very boring character with an uninteresting romance in Azalea, Jodie makes you wonder why they wanted Elvis to play two characters when one of them doesn't even do that much, and they outright insult Southerners by using very cliched stereotypes.
So why do I like this movie in spite of these problems? Because the story has enough good elements that you can actually fix the problems without having to completely change the movie. It's like a Clambake in that I would consider the highlights to be enough to cover the glaring errors in it. If this movie had a different production team or a better budget I would say this story is one of the better ones for an Elvis movie. Therefore I would give this movie a 7/10. This is a movie that best exemplifies how Colonel's interference directly hurt a movie that otherwise would've been great. I highly recommend watching it so you get the perspective of how poorly Hollywood thought of Southerners, yet still have the Tatum family feel like real people.
AN: Shout out to the discord besties for providing commentary about how the Tatum family showcased the bad light Hollywood painted the South in. Especially @grizelda71-blog. Your notes in particular helped me see both the good and the bad in this movie. Also shout out to @smokeymountainboy for your work as Jodie inspiring me to review this movie this month.

Welcome Home Answer Video Playfellow Workshop’s History Theory:
I'm thinking about the answer videos hidden in the Welcome Home website and after watching them all in order several times, I'm starting to wonder if there is a hidden story that's being told metaphorically by each of the neighbours. I'm thinking if you string it together in a certain way it may reveal the history of the Playfellow Workshop history.
So, here's a list of my impressions on each of the videos and how they could reflect on the workshop's history:
Video 1: Poppy is knitting some clothes for all the neighbours, so they don't get cold. Howdy comes along with supplies and a new device that should make knitting much easier. My interpretation: A small team is just working on some small puppet projects. Just to have some fun or provide entertainment for a small community. They get help to make their project easier to produce and their company grows.
Video 2: Sally and Poppy and working on coming up with a cake for a play. Sally emphasizes that it needs to be big and bold. Poppy isn't sure about it and asks about details like what flavor Sally wants. My interpretation: The company is big enough to start getting into some serious show business and the team working on trying to figure out what kind of show they want how to make it work.
Video 3: Sally visits Howdy's shop and is persuaded to get some new (questionable food). My interpretation: The company is able to get some sponsorships, most likely through advertisements. And also I think this is some lore that reveals that the puppets can eat things that would be inedible to humans.
Video 4: Barnaby is critiquing Frank's garden, arguing over the blue flowers and how 'blue's all the rage nowadays'. Frank dismisses him, wanting only to garden the flowers as they are in peace. Barnaby points out he gonna have to do a lot more if his flowers are gonna grow big and strong and then proceeds to torment Frank with puns. Frank point out to Wally that his jokes can be a bit much at times. My interpretation: Two members of Playfellow are discussing about the future of their company. Their shows are getting stale and they need something to really capture the audience's attention. Barnaby may also represent a really important figure in the company, like a co-founder or something. The other members find him annoying but put up with his jokes anyway. Video 5: Eddie stops to talk to Wally after running around all day, delivering mail. Barnaby really needs his kazoos. My interpretation: The company's become even more busy to keep up with the demands of their show productions.
Video 6: Frank tells Julie about how his tomatoes are getting eaten by beetles and they joke about each other in a friendly manner. My interpretation: The company's shows is either starting to get hit with some criticism by the public or some of their production value is deteriorating. Puppets take a lot of maintenance to keep up appearances and they may be feeling the strain of it.
Video 7: Julie and Eddie are playing a game of working for a company, with Julie being the president. Julie's riding on Eddie about the growth of their business and how he needs to step up. Julie gets a call from Barnaby they they're all out of office supplies and Julie is distraught that they are out of business. Eddie then hands the phone to Wally, saying he has a call. My interpretation: Playfellows is not doing good and may be on the very edge of bankruptcy. They're out of budget and can't make enough sales to pick themselves back up. One of the important figures in the company makes a call that changes everything to try to save the company
Video 8: Eddie calls Frank over to deal with a beetle problem that's sending his whole office in an upheaval. "A bug, a critter, a guest, a neighbor-! -Whatever it is, it’s upheavin’ my whole post office! Just look at what it’s done with the paper chains!" Eddie isn't even sure what it is. Frank is unbothered by it, sarcastically saying how lovely it made the paper chains and should be hired. Frank shows the beetle is nothing to be scared of so long as you treat it nice. My Interpretation: Wally enters the show. A living puppet. Something that's unnatural. Some of the coworkers at Playfellow are freaked out by him and don't like him messing with their things. However, one senior member, shows that Wally is harmless if a little strange.
Video 9: Frank and Poppy is talking about trying out new recipes using gelatin and special moulds. Poppy is concerned they wont be very appealing. Franks says he wishes butterflies were more fond of seeds and muffins, otherwise he would have been able to save his garden. Poppy's not sure how to tell if a butterfly is happy or not. They are also finished with an 'experiment' and Poppy frets over the danger of dealing with such dangerous appliances. "No, no, no! Don’t get yourself started, Poppy! I would rather be careful than throw caution to the wind anyhow! Besides, we’re safe and sound here… Wouldn’t you agree, Wally?" (Im not so sure, Frank.) My interpretation: Now some interesting things are happening >>; They are now creating 'new' puppets and perhaps conducting experiments with them. Figuring how what they eat, what they like, and how they can mould them into what they want.
Video 10: Sally and Julie are practising a new play and Julie keeps going off script. They mention a sad story about how the King of Cake gets eaten by a Broccoli monster and 'the princess' defeats the monster and comes back to become Queen of Pastries, making all sorts of strange decrees as new ruler. My interpretation: The puppets tend to go off script and do their own thing and it makes some of the Playfellow staff frustrated trying to work with them in order to keep the show making sense. The 'King of Cake' getting eaten by a monster also feels like a very ominous thing to add to the script >> Possible blood sacrifices or murder happening within the company perhaps? Also Julie really likes Breen.
Video 11: Julie and Barnaby are arguing about how she thinks she is capable of being funny but Barnaby keeps teasing her about how she's not. My interpretation: Some of the previous puppeteers feel like they're being replaced by these new puppets and and perhaps are being forced to leave the company to find new jobs since their talents aren't appreciated anymore. That or some of the puppets don't know how to land a joke. (I personally thought Julie's joke was cute)
Video 12: Howdy is talking to Barnaby about some family drama that's going on in his life. Some infighting that going on between his cousins, aunts and uncles. My interpretation: There are members of the company (which has gotten pretty big at this point) that are upset about being pushed out of the limelight to make way for the new puppets or for being overworked and abused. The ones in charge see them as just not working hard enough or not doing better to earn better pay/treatment within the company. Some members straight up leave to join other company's instead. But the owners aren't concerned and are just happy that Playfellows is a huge success again and are just enjoying the benefits of it.
Video 13: Eddie delivers a parcel to Howdy and Howdy is rather apathetic to Eddie's struggles. Even as he struggles to carry a whole box of bowling balls. My interpretation: There's just contempt within the company. And the people in charge don't care about the employees. And there may be some emotional abuse going on with the puppets as well.
Video 14 (final): Barnaby is talking to Home about how Julie bad at jokes and can come up with way better ones than her. Home expresses doubt about that. And then shares the other stuff he's been up to today, including talking to Howdy about his family and teasing Eddie about chasing the mailman. He's upset he didn't get his kazoos, even after harassing poor Eddie. "Yeah, yeah, real funny! A poor little guy like me deserves some sympathy! A clown without a kazoo is like… Like an artist without his paintbrush! Go on kid, tell ‘em!". Barn then notices something is off with Wally and asks if he's alright. My interpretation: Barnaby, to me, seems to be strongly implied to represent one of the co-founders of Playfellows. You can tell by his tone he talks as if he knows what's best for everyone and even acts patriarchal about Julie and her jokes. Which I think tells us about what the co-founder was like as a person. He also gives me the sense that he's got some insecurities about himself and his company. He wants to be liked and wants his show to be seen as something great. But probably because of how the company may be falling apart on the inside, he's having some doubts and leans heavily on Wally to be the puppet to keep the show going. But Wally's... Not doing so good.
I feel like there was also be a lot more sketchy stuff going on inside the company as it grew and once the 'other' puppets became involved. But I think we won't know for sure until more secrets come out.
Those are my thoughts on Welcome Home for now. May post more theories/opinions in the future. Feel free to tell me what you guys think or if you have your own theories on the matter.

I don’t actually think that money is inherently bad or the cause of all ills. Money is a tool that represents the value we put on things. It also represents debt, which existed before money. It’s a very useful tool if you ask me. Just for practicality’s sake in any large international society.
A lot of the actual problem is and always has been people trying to hoard power. Before money and in societies without money, people hoarded food, soldiers, access to water, access to religious spaces, access to land, and used their influence to hurt others in various ways.
Capitalism, communism, socialist democracies, dictatorships, are all relatively new things. And in the future something new will show up. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know if money will be involved. Whether it is or it isn’t, someone will probably try to game the system and hurt other people for their own benefit.
I’m not the sort of person who tries to plan out a new system and tie my politics to that. I’m the sort of person who looks at individual policies and practices and tries to figure out what good they can do and how they can be fixed and what that might lead to down the road.
When I look at money I don’t really think that the idea or item itself is causing the problem. Requiring people to buy food and other necessities wouldn’t be an issue if we made sure that everyone always had enough money to do at least that and heavily regulated or nationalized the industries selling those necessities.
I like money. Not through any love of greed or material objects, but as a practical thing. I don’t know everyone and I don’t want to. If we want to exchange goods and services around fairly, money is a nice practical way to do that.
And a lot of people like billionaires that people claim are hoarding money aren’t really doing that as their main crime against humanity. They’re hoarding land, housing, and partial ownership of the means of production in the form of stocks. People who hold a lot of stocks have actual voting power in large companies. None of this is just about money. It’s about who gets the power. And in this day and age money just happens to be the scale we use to conceptualize that power. We don’t even look at the number of people in a military as much anymore. We look at the size of military budgets. The amount of money spent on weapons. As the public these abstract numbers are how we understand the scale of certain things. But that number representing the stuff isn’t the problem itself. It’s the stuff they’re making and hoarding and how they project power with that stuff and hurt others.
There’s a lot I disagree with Marx about but one thing I think he was totally right to focus on was the means of production. Because that’s one thing that’s being controlled right now in large quantities. Agriculture for example is increasingly homogenized and controlled by only a few big corporations. And other things are being hoarded as well. Like the distribution of electricity or internet. Or space in major cities that could be used for affordable housing. Or housing itself.
I don’t think there’s one thing we can abolish or fix that can change all of this. But I personally center my politics on one thing at a time. Harm reduction and taking away bit by bit the ability of a very small portion of the population to hurt the rest of us.
The economic pain and other societal ills we’re all suffering from in one way or another are too complicated for one dingus or another to fix even in a purely abstract sense. But I do think it’s all more complicated than “money bad”. Because I don’t think that money is bad. Like I said at the beginning, it’s a tool. And a hammer can be used to both create and destroy.

VERY pleasing to me that the year starts and ends on a Sunday

listening
first song of the year: doja cat's say so (snakehips remix). just a pretty little soap bubble of a song. this is not to say it's insubstantial, bc i do think that doja cat is one of the harder hitters when it comes to production values, just that it's about a soft, ephemeral moment. in an interview i cannot locate she once said "if my songs make you get up and dance i've done my job" and this is very much a staple on my dishwashing playlist
youtube
i've stolen lyrics for a fic (no punches left to roll with) and plan to continue mining this song for fic and chapter titles. stay tuned

watching
kicked off the sixth year of starting a new-to-me black and white movie at about ten forty/eleven PM on new year's eve, so i come into the new year watching something good. very important: it has to be a movie i have not seen but i already know i will love. previous years have been: sunset boulevard, yojimbo, the thin man, it happened one night, and bringing up baby. i am predisposed to noir and screwball comedies, but it is very funny that yojimbo kicked off the Cowboy Year and i simply have never looked back. i am reluctant to watch a cowboy movie as the first movie of the year bc they are so wildly varying in quality and i find most black-and-white american westerns afflicted with the hays code. do pre-code westerns exist? yeah. do i want to watch them? no.
this year was The Big Sleep (1946, Hawks), one of The film noirs. films noir?

password manager: i am changing every fucking password i have bc of the lastpass breach :) bitwarden has slightly fewer quality of life features but the free tier more than supports my needs. neither of my siblings uses a password manager aside from the built in chrome and apple ones (upside down smiley face emoji) so we'll save that battle and that family plan purchase for another day.
planner talk: i am outsourcing a greater portion of my brain to the planner as the post-covid fog continues and at this point i honestly think i would rather someone have unfettered access to my journal than unfettered access to my planner. the planner is where most of the living happens. (pro tip: preload birthdays into that thing and then write a reminder a month out to actually find and send off a birthday gift/card/what have you. this makes me feel extremely put together, but there not very many people i actually buy gifts for)
thoughtful gift talk: a related pro tip, if you find whimsical but slightly generic objets d’art at thrift stores and cannot quite justify them for yourself, try throwing them in a big box for those gifts you have previously written yourself reminders about. love a trinket box or a container of some sort to put a slightly more personalized gift in. eg these rabbit glass...lidded trinket dishes? idk they have a proper name but they're rabbit versions of the milk glass hen-on-nest dishes that used to be really popular during the depression. pen and cat for scale
Tumblr media
these will probably go off to my sister for her birthday, holding some monogrammed earrings and a cat toy for her cat fern.
i suppose the "generic box of cool stuff but not so cool that you will mourn its loss" could also work for hostess or housewarming gifts if that is a situation that frequently happens to you. i feel a little bit like im showing my hand by sharing these aging tumblr population tips bc i had to derive them all from first principles but there is no need for YOU, gentle reader, to reinvent the wheel along with me.

Rodrick Rules: Disney + Disappoints
So uh, did you know this even came out? It got basically no marketing and I found out it released today by getting a community post on YouTube, which is hardly a good omen. Make a mental note of this, I'll bring it up again later. That aside, lemme talk a bit about Diary of a Wimpy Kid, since I doubt I'll get an opportunity for it again.
I was a pretty big fan of the books when I was growing up, being in just the right age range to laugh at the relatable scenarios. Watched the live action movies too, and honestly thought the trilogy (before The Long Haul) faithfully adapted the books while adding more layers to the characters. I fell off the series eventually though, and when I moved out of my house in Florida, I donated my whole set. Mostly because they took up space, but also because I felt they were losing something.
Not meaning to doubt Jeff Kinney's talent as an author, I do think those earlier books hold up from what I remember. But once you reach a certain point in an ongoing series, you begin to exhaust your ideas, highlighted even by the covers for these books reusing colors. So I suppose it wasn't too surprising that when Disney got the film distribution rights for the series, they would retread the books that already had movies to give Disney + more content. That said, when the idea was first teased, I was actually alright with it, since the first book was being adapted into an animated movie, and the test animation looked stylized enough that it could stand on its own.
However, I suppose the scope of the project was scaled back considerably after the test animation, because the final product ended up looking very cheap, and to put it bluntly...amateurish. This applies to the sequel too, which is what this review is really about, haha. Lumping these two together for context made more sense in my head, since I feel both movies have the same issues plaguing them. Anyway, the visuals, the big elephant in the room. They look REALLY bad.
The framerate is really jittery and like they forgot to include tween frames, the lighting is basic and gives everything an unappealing black shadow. The environments look empty and like they only modeled the bare minimum needed (I noticed the Heffley house has only one tree behind it in the opening scene). I could go on, but just in general, the team working on this clearly didn't have enough money or time to create something better.
And I don't think it takes a genius to understand why: the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies were only greenlit to fill space on Disney + since the service still doesn't appeal to people without an existing attachment to their IPs. The actual quality of the productions didn't matter to the higherups, they just needed to release so it looked like there was more value to the service. So, they likely delegated a shoestring budget, leaving them with barely anything left for marketing. That way the movies could be made for cheap, advertised for cheap (not at all), and it wouldn't burn a hole in their pockets since the films were hardly a consideration.
As such, my summary of Rodrick Rules will have as much care as Disney themselves had. It's the book but bad. Rodrick throws a party, Greg learns his tricks to skating through life in exchange for keeping quiet, their parents find out anyway, the brothers make up after some tension. The broad strokes are there but the specifics are off, like it was their first draft of the script being submitted. Mainly, due to the short runtime, this all happens really fast and none of the attempted emotional moments hit.
Does it matter though? Eh, probably not, I'm sure there's already an adaptation of similar quality for the third book being worked on for a release next year. Disney is a corporation with money on their minds first, so I doubt they would give more respect to the books of my childhood unless a much bigger audience shows up, and by design, these movies are being forgotten about after they release. Posting my thoughts here isn't gonna change anything, but I still wanted to voice them because it's better than letting them go unsaid.

If the grass is not returned, what should the e-commerce department and the marketing department do?
Tumblr media
Is it feasible to grow content? How's the effect? After many brands tried it, the results were average. The marketing department did a big exposure, but the e-commerce department said there was no return of stores. What should I do? This article analyzes it from three aspects, let’s take a look
Is content planting effective? How effective it is has always been a mystery. Many brands have HE Tuber tried it with mediocre results. So what should I do if the content is planted, the marketing department does a big exposure, and the e-commerce department says there is no return to the store?
Let me share a case first:
Although the economy is in recession, those who have money are still willing to invest in brands. When diagnosing a brand, the marketing department would have a budget of 500,000 yuan/month to put in dozens of experts, and tens of millions of exposures, which would be enough to brag about, but the result is that the new product cannot be launched. Then we came to the conclusion that Douyin and Xiaohongshu will not return to Tmall. Encourage the boss to create a closed loop within the Douyin site, put it in Qianchuan, and do live broadcasts, and then ROI = 1. I am very happy. Tell the boss that since the input-output ratio can be traced, it is better to close the loop. It is more intuitive than planting grass, and you don’t know how much the grass has been sold.
This is a problem that many e-commerce brands will encounter. To this day, in the era of mobile Internet and content marketing, the brand department is still discussing branding and exposure. The results have nothing to do with them, it’s the e-commerce department that realizes the results.
In any era, the meaning of a brand's existence or the meaning of being a brand is that the ultimate goal must be to increase sales, not exposure or communication. These are just ways to achieve the goal. If the way cannot bring about an increase in sales, then it must be the method. There's a problem. If you don't take responsibility for sales, you must be acting like a hooligan.
The boss and the brand department each have their own responsibilities and difficulties in causing this embarrassing situation.
For the boss, the brand department or the marketing department has spent so much money on the company, but you can't tell the value it can bring to the company, how much sales will be increased, then how does the boss evaluate the department's performance and determine the amount of money given to the department? Budget. Giving too little will have no effect, while giving too much will affect profits.
The boss of the brand department or marketing department is also a part-time worker. If you want to have performance, promotion and salary increase, you need something convincing. Data is the most direct. Since no one can determine the sales volume, let’s talk about exposure, clearly. Intuitive, not good-looking enough and beautified by technical means.
01 What is invalid exposure?
Human beings naturally dislike advertising. The lack of security in human nature makes humans desire to protect their money, and advertising encourages everyone to consume and buy products. Advertising needs to be soft and effective, which will test your skills.
Human beings under the pressure of life like entertainment, recreation, passing time, and healing, so this type of content is well exposed. What consumers like is the plot, praise of characters, or BMG. Therefore, efficiency/plot/healing Short videos have good data, but everyone’s focus is not on the product itself, the product is just a prop in the picture.
Don’t really think that if you show the usage process of the product, show the logo, and have exposure, you can bring goods. If e-commerce traffic relies on exposure, then directly do CPM advertising, focus advertising, and subway advertising, and you also need to plant content. what.
Therefore, this kind of content is invalid exposure, and no matter how big or beautiful the data is, it is useless.

AEW: Fight Forever (2023)
No prizes for guessing who was convinced to get back into wrestling recently.
What we got here is the first non-indie alternative to WWE games that wrestling fans have had in, what, over a decade? A game that saw a bunch of delays from its original release date, and it shows. I'll start with the negatives.
If we compare this to the annual WWE releases, it's a losing battle. For a similar prize (speaking of base game here, if you count DLC then WWE is much more expensive) you're getting a game that looks noticeably worse and has less content. The graphics are the first thing you'll notice, looking outdated, like this obviously doesn't have the budget of a AAA game. But that's fine, worse graphics are totally chill, if it wasn't for the lack of consistency, as some characters look totally fine and others are comedically uncanny.
In terms of content, you have a variety of match types, but there's always a bunch of stuff you wish you could do and simply isn't there, like a steel cage match for example. There's online modes, but they're predictably rather empty. There's a career mode, and it's fun enough, with branching storylines, but it's very short and will surely disappoint a bunch of people (despite the fact that you're expected to play it several times so I'd rather have something short and manageable). The customization gets the worst end of the deal, as created characters get a very underwhelming amount of options, most members of the roster only get 1 costume (while some get up to 6). A bunch of features you would expect from other games like this you might have played are lacking or missing.
The other disappointing part of the game that's obviously a product of the lower budget and the delays is the roster. I started watching the TV program around the time that this came out, and there's a bunch of wrestlers that seem very important on TV and are nowhere to be seen here. Similarly, after watching the show for a few months, there are plenty of characters in this roster that I haven't seen on TV even once, or people who look fairly different on TV compared to the game. From what I hear from other people that followed AEW before me, the roster screams "this should have come out like a year ago". All these negatives really pile up and make it a hard game to recommend for a whopping 60 dollars, whether you're a fan or not.
As for the positives, the core gameplay is what's carrying this entire experience. The controls are simple enough to learn and to remember, but you still get a bunch of stuff you can do during a fight. It's snappy, satisfying, and a bit addictive. In part I had so much fun playing that it contributed to that feeling of wanting to do more things but not being able to, because the content isn't there.
The career mode was a decent highlight, it's simple and even repetitive at times, with very little voice acting and other details that scream low budget, but there's a good amount of comedic situations that made me chuckle, and looking at the branching structure, you get what feels like 3 separate, complete stories with varying degrees of seriousness. I had fun watching my bootleg John Cena character have a Persona 4 moment and fight his own shadow/manifestation of self-doubt before a big fight, only to play the campaign with a different character and go through a vastly different story.
The last more-or-less positive was the online battle royale mode they added with a free update. It's janky, it's online-only, which really sucks because there are very few active players, but it's a really silly and entertaining extra mode to play every now and then. Not exactly competitive or anything, but I'm so glad it's there. Makes you feel there's more value for your money, for sure.
I know I sound overly negative, but I really feel like the game, with all its flaws, is worth playing, it's ultimately fun. I'd say it's a massive case of "wait for a sale", because I can't imagine anyone who isn't a mega fan of AEW and/or the wrestlers in that company thinking it was worth their 60 whole bucks.

9 Signs It’s Time to Move to a New House
If you've been living in a house for a while but have begun to feel like it's not your home anymore, it may be time to look at getting a new place. There are a few things you should consider before deciding it’s time to move.
If you're thinking about moving to a new home, you might be wondering, “when is the best time to move?” The good news is that there are a number of different indicators that it is time to sell your house and move to a new one. It’s advisable to hire one of the best movers in Massachusetts if you don’t want to end up spending more. Here are some of the most common ones to look out for.
1. Outgrown Current Space
If you are feeling cramped in your home, there may be a good chance that it is time for you to move. Many homeowners realize that their home is no longer fitting their needs as they grow. A starter home often becomes too small once the family expands. Adding more kids, an empty nest or a change in lifestyle can all lead to a need for a new house. Fortunately, there are several signs it’s time to move out.
One of the most common signs of needing a new home is the amount of clutter. Clutter can accumulate over time and can spill into other rooms. As the family grows, you may find that you need more storage space or a better workspace. You can also run out of bathroom or bedroom space. The average American moves about 12 times in their lifetime.
A newer, bigger home comes with a host of benefits. For example, it opens up the opportunity to do things like re-purposed bedrooms and re-arrange living rooms into more conducive spaces. It also provides a welcome break from the daily grind and a new set of friends and family. And the more area you have, the more room you can take care of your pets! Having more room to move around can make for a happier, healthier, and more productive household.
2. Job Relocation
If you're wondering whether it's time to move to a new house for job relocation, it's important to look at the bigger picture. A good place to start is with your HR department. They can tell you if there are any requirements or licensing requirements you need to meet before you can apply for a new job. You should also check your state's unemployment benefits to see if you qualify for any type of subsidy.
There are other reasons to move for a new job. For instance, you might be interested in a city that is better suited for your career or family's lifestyle. Another reason to move is if you want to rent out your current home.
Besides the obvious, you need to consider what is important to you. For example, do you really value free time? If your answer is yes, it's probably a good idea to move into a smaller residence where you can make the most of your downtime. Likewise, if you're not a big fan of the commute, you may want to consider moving closer to work or a better school.
3. High Living Expenses
If your monthly living expenses are a lot higher than they were when you moved into your current home, it might be time to relocate. Whether you're moving into a bigger house, an apartment, or another rental, you'll want to make sure that you have enough money in your savings account to cover the cost of things you need to move into a new house. The good news is that it's a lot easier to start saving than you might think.
Make a personal budget. This will help you to figure out how much you're spending on each type of expense each month. A budget will also show you the best ways to cut back on your spending and save up for a move. As a general rule, you should save at least three months' worth of living expenses.
4. Access to Better Amenities
If you are planning to buy a new house, one of the things you will want to consider is access to better amenities. The more accessible the amenities, the more desirable the place will be. You will want to find houses in areas with quality landscaping, parks nearby, and major transit routes.
There are 12 categories of local amenities, including primary schools, dentists, liquor stores, pharmacies, and clothing/shoe retailers. Each variety of local amenities has a specific number of points that are scored. For example, a large urban center with a high diversity of specialized amenities has a score of about 81 points, while a small urban center has a score of about 42 points.
5. Need for a Change in Environment
If you're feeling stuck in your current neighborhood and crave a change of scenery, it may be the answer to your question, “when is the best time to move to a new location?” Whether you're looking for a more peaceful environment, a more convenient location, or a more exciting neighborhood, a new house can offer the change you're looking for.
6. The need for a Home Office
With more people working from home, having a dedicated space for work has become increasingly important. If your current home doesn't have a suitable space for a home office, it may be time to move to a house with a dedicated office or extra room that can be converted into an office.
7. Neighborhood Safety Concerns
If you're feeling unsafe in your current neighborhood or if crime rates have increased, it may be time to move to a safer area. Living in a safe community can provide peace of mind and ensure that your family is protected.
8. Lack of Privacy
When you feel that your privacy is being compromised, it might be time to move into a new house. This is especially true if you have kids. You will want to make sure that you have a space for them to grow and play. The older they get, the more likely they will need their own room. Even if you've lived in your house for years, you may need to relocate if space is becoming limited.
9. The Desire for a Fresh Start
Finally, it may be time to move to a new house if you're just feeling stuck in your current home and crave a fresh start. A new home can provide the change you're looking for and help you start fresh in a new location.
Moving to a bigger home is often the best solution to start over. This will give you the opportunity to create new memories with your family. It is always a good idea to check with movers in Massachusetts to make sure that your current home is the right fit for you.
Conclusion
There are also exceptions to the above-mentioned signs it’s time to move out. For instance, you could move into your new home if you have aging parents or if you have a spouse who will need to stay in the same house as you. In addition, if you own a business or a nonprofit, you might need to give the company a place to store its documents.
In conclusion, there are many signs that can indicate it's time to move to a new house. Whether you're outgrowing your space, looking for a change in environment, or just desire a fresh start, a new home can provide the change you're looking for. Make sure to consider your needs and wants carefully before making a move, and consult with a real estate professional to help you find the perfect home.

How do you explain a logo?
A simple guide to great Logo’s
Logos  are just some initials of your company and an appropriate cute icon attached to it right?
Well maybe, but there’s more story to the tiny logo of your company, if you care about the branding of your company tune in we will tell you what  logo really means and what a great logo contains.
Your logo is the face of your company, every time when people visit your  website, office or take a glance at your visiting card what do they notice first? Your Logo.
Your Logo  holds the power to convey who you are, what you do and what your company values so just some initials and a suitable icon won’t fit your company as logo.
You need something more, you need a good logo in fact you need a great logo to convey that and what’s a great logo made of.
Here are the 3  rules for a great logo
1 simple
To start things of a good logo is first of all simple, simple enough to understand and simple enough to fit all the sizes of the formats of print ables like visiting card to a billboard and still be readable and be recognized as your company.
When you add lot of details to the logo it becomes unrecognizable when its printed or required in small size, its better to keep your logo plain and simple with just 1 color if possible.
2 Distinct
Secondly, your logo shouldn’t be just another type of logo of your competitor, your logo should make you stand out from the rest of the pack and show your uniqueness.
If your company’s logo is being mistaken for other company should get back to the drawing board and create something unique.
3 Memorable
And at last before you sketch your great logo concept, the market should be thoroughly researched and you should get to know, who are your customers and how do they associate the product or service you’re selling.
If you’re selling Ice Cream and put some asteroid as your logo  cause it looks cool people find it hard to understand and remember your brand as ice cream brand especially if you’re a new brand with no marketing budget, but if you have got the  big bucks  for marketing you can try rewriting memories of people of asteroid to  some vanilla ice cream.
That’s it
If you need a great logo follow these three factors, make your logo - Simple, Distinct and Memorable.
There are many other factor’s such as color, typography, imagery but these are more important than those and  picking the right logo for your company can be hard some times but don’t stress  our designers at RinixWeb will take care of your logo.

Aahh!!! I'm so pleased you also love The Mummy 1999!!!! One of my comfort movies. it has so much great moments! The Mummy returns as well (I don't acknowledge any other Mummy movies). Your blog is great for my interests because there's always something new and shiny to catch my attention, whether a fandom that I'll follow you into, or just see you enjoy a new fandom, or any of the other things you post. So just thank you (Sorry for not messaging, I think tumblr is not notifying me for messages)
the Mummy is one of my all-time favourite movies <33333 it's just got everything? snark and banter, perfectly-paced romance, casual theft and delightful drunkeness from the bookish character upending dull stereotypes, shenanigans, "looks like you're on the wrong side of the river", healthy and hilarious sibling relationships, competent comic relief character instead of useless and vexing, magic spells and ancient curses, the world's most sexy mysterious and flawless character Ardeth Bay, and a villain who's motives i can get behind, dude just really wants to resurrect the woman he fell in love with and died for (with maybe some horrific revenge thrown in nbd), bc tbh if Anck-su-namun made heart-eyes at me i would also die for her and possibly unleash several plagues to resurrect her as my queen.
god that movie was formative i love it so so much

Okay, because clearly Amazon is doing a crap job, what if the fans made their own show?
We’ve got a large enough fandom to fundraise(I think). We’ve already proven we can make amazing fan films(see Born of Hope). We’ve got cosplayers to make costumes, fanfic writers to write scripts, language experts, etc.
And I bet we can do way better than Amazon.
so I guess I have to talk about Prelude to Axanar and Storm Over Gondolin, huh?
the Tolkien Estate has historically looked the other way on fan films... so long as those fan films are small-scale and low-budget. Born of Hope and The Hunt for Gollum both qualify here - they were labors of love, and even had decent production values, but they don't try and compete with the licensed (aka "moneymaking") properties directly, they focus on different aspects and stories. they do not, however, take kindly to large-scale fan film efforts (or at least they didn't when Christopher Tolkien was still alive)
the biggest and most notorious example of this was Storm Over Gondolin, a fan film being developed in the early 2010s that had some serious preproduction going on before being delivered a cease and desist. nobody at the time really understood why Chris decided to shut this down, since it was entirely noncommercial and entirely fanmade, but it couldn't continue. I was only on the fringes of this, so I don't know all the details, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just so big that it stopped looking like a fan film and started looking like a low-budget indie movie. and even if the climate is warmer now under Priscilla, I'm not actually sure what would happen if we tried a fan series, because of...
... Prelude to Axanar, a Star Trek fan film that had a truly massive-for-fan-film budget and very good fanmade special effects. now Star Trek, unlike the Legendarium, has a substantial fan film scene and has had multiple long-term fan series and projects, including feature-length stories that bring back actors from the shows to reprise their roles. For a long, long time, CBS/Viacom ignored this and tacitly encouraged it, so long as there wasn't money being made - there were even sequel series to TOS being made and released on YouTube with sets and special effects comparable to the series proper. PtA seemed to signal a regime change, though, because it was so big and so professional-looking that it posed a threat to the brand. As a result, CBS introduced some stringent requirements for fan films, including a length limit, a disclaimer acknowledging CBS's ownership of Star Trek and the fan film status of the project, and rules about the content. This killed the Trek fan film scene dead, and forced some in-production stuff (like Renegades) to change to serial-numbers-filed-off original fiction.
In the wake of PtA, I genuinely don't know what Amazon et al will do. The only way I could see this genuinely working is if it was entirely made and produced in Russia, or other Eastern European countries that have a different relationship with copyright law than America. If you were ever wondering why Russia gets so many very cool Tolkien fan musicals and fan musicians, and why Russian fanfic can get published and sold, that's why - they can basically do whatever they want. Of course, that is an option, but is it one we want to pursue in the name of making an accurate series? I'd say yes, but I'm not sure if it's feasible. Unfortunately. I'd love to move to Russia and do nothing but make Tolkien fan films.
