my incoherent naruto rant 😌

i actually liked what kishimoto had going with obito and madara. to an extent

like there was a pattern/theme about dehumanization and the persistence of humanity/emotions throughout naruto. the shinobi system is based on dehumanizing its own soldiers and using them as mindless tools. but the narrative is so adamant in people's humanity and agency. it's one of the first messages of the story in the land of waves--that just because the system treats shinobi as tools does not mean they actually lost their humanity.

ignoring all the other examples bc i can't rant too much, otherwise this post will just get too long.

OBITO (to give space between the sections because oh my god it's so long ☹️)

With obito. it is about his denial of his own humanity and individual identity leads him vulnerable to manipulation from madara and black zetsu, which i think shows well in how he easily puts on different personas (ie madara and tobi) (and feels no shame in it. if i had to act like madara's raging homosexual ass i would just die on the spot). his desire to completely escape himself and his own ideals and intentions, to claim he has no personal will of his own, rendered him the perfect tool to use. but even so! kishimoto shows that obito was never able to escape his own humanity. it shows in how he ultimately wanted mugen tsukuyomi to revive rin and return to his happy past, how he doesn't trust madara/didn't want to revive him; and how he keeps trying to push naruto into giving up; and how it was his memories and bonds within his team 7 that let him overcome and control the juubi chakra. and in the end, it is his own subconscious doubts about the mugen tsukuyomi and his actions that lead to his uh. redemption. his inherent humanity was what 'saved' him and what motivated him to accept his agency to well... not do better but die a better man, i guess.

MADARA

for madara. it is somewhat similar. in that in his desperation to leave behind his flawed human side and ascend to like. god position by gaining absolute control over his world etc. it left him vulnerable to black zetsu's manipulation.

but. BUT madara unlike obito has a greater grasp of his contradictions; even as he wants to end war and conflict, he finds pleasure in battle/fighting he isn't denying that contradictory side of himself. he even admits that this hypocritical desire for both peace and conflict is inherent in humanity: he tells obito "whereever light strikes, there are shadows" and tobirama "to want only peace and discard only conflict would cause people to stop being people"

As @obihoe says, madara seems to feel that the world he lives in leaves no other choice but to engage in conflict, so he fully gives up his agency and enjoys battle. But at the same time! he doesn't want to give up his agency, he wants complete control over what happens in his world. fuck it, his plan to rid the world of chakra requires him to obtain even more chakra. everything about him is a paradox. even as he fully revels in showcasing his power and his attraction to battle, he tries to rise above it and that is why he fails. Because he is human, and he can be nothing but a human.

But he's still distinct from the previous naruto villains because he acknowledges his contradictions. it leaves no space for naruto to talk-no-jutsu him as he did with nagato and obito.

(it's absolutely insane because this acknowledgement of contradiction is the exact same mentality that naruto ultimately ends up with: even naruto himself experiences this contradiction [ie his desire for a rivalry with sasuke contradicted but also did not cancel out his desire for friendship with sasuke]; conflict is a natural state of humanity, but that does not mean the desire for and efforts towards peace is meaningless; in fact, it makes it more meaningful; the embracing of contradiction of the human heart and the persistence in not denying it. Like it's insane. so fucking insane)

(the difference between madara and naruto is that naruto accepts his contradictions and finds compromise whereas madara tried to overcome and dominate his human instinct with overwhelming power/chakra)

on one hand, that escalation within the villain hierarchy and same level of understanding of human hypocrisy makes madara a narratively appropriate final boss to naruto's character arc. naruto has always reached out to his enemies by finding the 'flaws' in their ideology and learning through them and amending the contradictions in his own beliefs; that is how he matures as a character and eventually a leader throughout his journey. madara's simultaneous desire to discard his humanity (control freak) as well as his wholehearted embrace of his humanity (battle freak and a peace lover) makes him well. the perfect embodiment of the contradictory and conflict-inclined state of humanity. you know? which makes kaguya's placement in the narrative kind of ???

on the other hand. that tragic devastation when madara realizes that in his desperation to fix everything with his power and spare himself the pain and hardship of camaraderie. he left himself open to be used as a tool for another person who never cared about him; in an epic parallel to how the shinobi system/village uses and discards its own people. that's like 👌👌👌 you could even argue that kaguya fits thematically as the last villain as a symbol of absolute solitary power or something

I just don't like how the whole story was about humanity and it's inclination towards conflict, and then the Big Bad turns out to be a fucking alien. kaguya can't even succumb to human contradiction because she's not even human 😭 and i felt like she just cut madara's character arc short? at least with obito, we had naruto confronting him, but with madara, he was betrayed before naruto (and sasuke and the rest of team 7) could confront him and prove him wrong in some way. instead we get a rabbit goddess alien fight and one brief conversation between madara and hashirama that just reveals??? madara had a change of heart???? i know it makes sense in some way, but it just. feels unfulfilling. madara was like. representing hypocritical nature of human desire; how do you go bigger than that? why would you go bigger than that?

KAGUYA

I think--i can't fucking believe i'm going to say this--kaguya does fit in thematically as the end boss, but only in the context of boruto. Like, we find out that kaguya is a member of an alien race that cultivates planets for chakra to become stronger, leaving them empty lifeless husks afterwards. Like that's peak systemic exploitation and disregard of life. And it kind of works with how madara has been used as a tool for not even towards his own goal but for a completely separate cause, like (again) how the shinobi system ignores personal motives and cares only about how people can contribute to benefiting the village or sustain this system.

But if that was the case, kaguya should've been revealed in boruto? she should've been a boruto villain???

I guess i could argue it makes sense? in a way? because even in just the context of naruto, kaguya is an outsider hoping to exploit people to make herself powerful (who went insane from her lust of power, but also she may have loved her children, does that matter? we don't know, she's given like one page of crying to flesh her out and that's it)--but i feel like it just does not have the same impact as humanity inflicting violence upon itself and breaking the cycle on its own terms etc. now it's just aliens did it all. what the fuck am i supposed to do about that :(

meanwhile meanwhile, obi-wan and his grandfather dooku are loosely planning to take over the government or something? obi-wan doesn't really know or feel that strongly about it but dooku has tied up his inheritance money to this scheme and obi-wan's inheritance money is already promised to like twenty different charities and a part of their pooled funding and Dooku would never leave that money there if it were actually his, so Obi-Wan is going to go along with whatever the plan is like he has a gun to his head.

Really think it’s super understated exactly how much of the cult end of things is really Bev Keane’s idea and fault- and this is not to divert blame from John at all like the real heartbreaker is his complacency in all this but more on that later. Essay under the cut because jesus there is too much to sum up.

Like???? It’s not like he fuckin died the first time he encountered the angel I mean he got bit yeah but he took a shot of the blood and boom he was fine! And young again to boot! So obviously the original plan is to just pop back to crockett slip some blood in the communion wine and boom!!! Millie gets young again and cured of dementia so he gets a second chance to really have a life with her and their daughter and everything is fine!!!!

… but then he reaches critical mass (which I expect is because he was ingesting more of it than everyone else at too quick a rate). Bev and her little group are the only people who know the truth and watch him die and come back. Immediately she is quoting and using scripture to describe the changes that his body is going through- I mean he's basically Jesus!!! the Penultimate Biblical Miracle coming back from the dead!!- and therefore he chalks it up to “a matter of faith” and doesn't see a doctor (AKA HIS OWN SMART AS FUCK DAUGHTER WHICH HONESTLY HE SHOULD!!!!!) And so he goes with it!!! Until once again the thing he became got out of hand- and though he didn’t directly himself kill Joe but are certainly to blame for just fucking sucking at his head wound instead of… y’know… HELPING the guy bleeding out on the floor of his own goddamn home.

So then he’s done this this monsterous thing- which again is more a fault of his inaction than direct action- and doesn’t even know what to think of it to a point he’s numb to it (I mean jesus I cannot believe he felt no real guilt at all- sitting in a corner barely fucking lucid in a blood coma for hours until your deacon comes to find you because you're late for mass doesn’t scream no guilt no remorse to me it screams fucking mental blackout) but AGAIN!!! Here she comes. Speaking the words of his faith and calling what he went through a miracle from God and showing him bible passages detailing EXACTLY THE SHIT THAT HE’S GOING THROUGH so well if it’s in the scripture maybe it’s ok maybe it’s part of god’s plan for him sure he’ll bite. But note that even though he doesn't feel remorse for this thing he did anymore because Bev told him it's in the bible so it's ok that he's still on a pretty strict Sturge Blood diet- probably more likely than not to avoid another Joe Collie incident- so funny little contradiction but he's too wrapped up in this idea of new morality thanks to Bev he doesn't get it (and that it's more than likely a move to protect herself from getting Ate).

Then there’s Riley. Riley who he has such a great affection for who he thinks doesn’t deserve to die because even though he’s done terrible things he deserves a chance at redemption too- because like his savior he finds kinship with pariahs and knows they deserve love just as much if not more than everyone else. So *he* brings him back (I mean he wasn’t taking communion seeing as he wasn’t in a “state of grace” and didn’t believe anymore- so it’s safe to assume he made the decision through the blood lust to save him), and he has “The Meeting” and half of it is parroting the shit that Bev revealed to HIM about this condition that they now both share because really they’ve been on the level with each other since the beginning- but there’s another half that’s desperately attempting to show him that it’s worth living- even though he’s done awful things and will now inevitably do it again because it’s now a compulsion that neither of them can control. But he doesn’t want to chain Riley to him he’s more compassionate knows better than that. He’s explained all he can and sends him out with hope!!! He’s feeling good about the new covenant and the shift of morality he’s facing and he has Riley as an apostle to help tell that good news.

But then the sunrise comes. And he can feel it when he dies. HE feels it. Like god might feel every death and he can barely handle the ONE death of his old altar boy- his friend. And he doesn’t have more than a few hours to mourn before IN COMES BEV!!!! Again!!! And guess what. She was unfortunately *right*. Not about Riley himself he was worthy and given a gift as a result but right that he shouldn’t have just set him out into the world so recklessly not 100% knowing what he might do- that he might “spit it out”. And then she says “who knows who he talked to”- and suddenly the dynamic shifts. Small town news spreads. What if he tells someone who tells someone who tells MILLIE? Or Sarah? And Bev says “lets ‘share the miracle’ and ‘make easter vigil a night of baptism’”. And you know what? He didn’t listen the last time. He’s an adult and can admit when he was wrong. So he goes with it. Because he was wrong and because he can’t have another fuck up with someone he loves (let alone the LOVE of his LIFE who he is DOING THIS FOR in the FIRST PLACE). So most of the plan he hands over the reigns to Bev. And it’s short sighted as fuck but you gotta remember this plan goes into effect literally THE DAY OF so it’s all haphazard and a rushed effort and he’s rushing and bev and sturge and wade are rushing to make sure 1) no one can leave the island and die like Riley 2) so they can still attempt to have a meeting about the whole vampirism thing I mean he managed to handle riley pretty well and he didn’t fuck up and kill somebody like HE did!!! He managed to teach him some level of control!!!! So surely he can handle this!!!

BUT IN HIS SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS!!!! In his complacency with Bev’s plan guess what!!!! All fucking hell breaks loose!!!! THE SHIT HITS THE FAN!!!! Of course it didn’t go to plan because it was simply too much all at once and he could barely process anything else that happened before it there just wasn’t time because he just doesn’t want anyone else to die so of course he went with it!!!! And he only starts to realize he fucked up when the chaos is so bad that Millie- *his* MILLIE fucking SHOOTS him!!

And what did Bev gain from the shit hitting the fan??? A platform. At last. A place of leadership where she gets to decide who lives and who dies and who’s a sinner and who a saint. She gets to play god to a flock of wolves and that shit is Dangerous. And it’s not until he sees it that he finally snaps out of it and realized he got this all wrong and that what she was doing was wrong and that what she was leading him on with was *wrong* and that moment of clarity brings him back to his roots long enough to reconcile with his former lover tell his daughter the truth he's been hiding for years and try to be a real father to her in his final hours and finally attempt to be the shepherd he used to be that he always *was* to the broken people that Bev would so easily cast aside because her idea of love from God is very different from his. And at least he knows that before the end and ends up seeking forgiveness from the one person who actually mattered that he needed reassurance and guidance and forgiveness from all along but couldn’t have had the whole goddamn time.

idk why it brings me such joy getting AO3 emails saying someone left kudos on a fic i wrote three years ago. 

sometimes i have to remember that just because i don’t get INSTANT FEEDBACK on writing i post, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. people will find it years later, and isn’t that the point really — you get it out there, and it’s a long game. it’s there for folks to find and for them to get some joy out of their day if they like the story. no matter how old it is.

#another one of my writer friends posting about book piracy this morning #it's heartbreaking; these authors trying to make a living doing what they love and selfish morons online ruin everything #look. if you pirate textbooks I'm not going to judge you. textbook publishing is a scam #if you pirate movies the actors and directors and crew have already been paid #the only people you're hurting are execs and possibly the chances of other films from that director or whatever #because the profit margins determine future output #but when you pirate a normal reading book #and ESPECIALLY a novel #you are directly hurting the author #the only authors that get paid in advance for their work are like... Stephen King. International bestsellers who got their start #in the 70s and 80s when the industry was different #anyone else? no. they get paid pennies per book sold. even big name authors can't afford to write full time because of thieves #and heaven help the indies #i have friends who literally make NEGATIVE profit because of legal piracy #where people buy a book read it and then return it #that return comes out of the author's payment from Amazon #most indies make pennies anyway so a negative paycheck is a huge blow #add to that insult the injury of finding your work uploaded to a piracy website and... #frankly it's amazing anyone tries to publish anything anymore #the fact that people defend this behavior is insane #'oh but i can't afford to buy books' ever heard of a library? of a used bookstore? of PaperbackSwap? #'the book i want isn't available!' then get off your tush and talk to your librarian #most libraries have a book request form #heck most libraries and do interlibrary loan. borrow it from somewhere else #you might have to wait a few days (le gasp) but the big difference is #THE AUTHOR GOT PAID FOR THE CONTENT YOU ARE ENJOYING #i see piracy guides come across my dash sometimes and i just--- #stop. respect authors. respect creators. #if you don't then i hope someday you create something and someone steals it from you. because you'll have no room to complain #redwintertalks
