so what i will be doing here is reposting my notes unaltered via screenshot, transcribing them, and then describing how i feel now. What do we mean when we say a bimbo is dumb? Are there multiple ways to be dumb?

In the context of bimbo, dumb usually means "ditzy" -- flighty, playful, and scatterbrained. But "dumb" may also mean shallow, vapid, simple -- focused entirely on superficial and material things. Obnoxious, crass, trashy (classless) behavior could also be considered "dumb". Point is, there's a lot that goes into the presentation of stupidity. General physical clumsiness and aloofness can also be a way for a character to appear dumb. Or subservience and submissiveness. Or childish naivety and innocence. Sometimes a bimbo will be all of these, or only one of these, or maybe even none? Who's to say? What someone considers intelligent or unintelligent usually has to do with their own personal biases, or in this case, turn-ons. It varies from person to person. (Recklessness is an another example of what could be considered "dumb")

I still agree with this wholeheartedly. The debate of whether a bimbo should be dumb or not, or how dumb a bimbo should be, is ultimately pointless because in the end a bimbo will always *appear* dumb. You could even argue that what we've commonly come to accept as "the bimbo look" is actually an extension/reflection of purported "dumbness," a physical expression of stupidity. After all its this same projection that largely formed the concept of the "bimbo" in the first place. The assumption that a woman is -- slutty because she wears revealing clothing, stupid and impossible to take seriously because she's young (see: giggles) or has large breasts, and vain because she wears makeup or has an interest in fashion. "Bimbo," as we know it today just takes this up a notch. "Large breasts" become fake breasts in general. Lip fillers. Dyed hair. Tattoos. Rhinoplasty. Fashion Nova. Botox, acrylics, high heels, waist trainers. Misogyny projects idiocy and promiscuity onto these traits, procedures, items, and practices.

Again, let's take Adam Warren's Empowered for example:

Is Emp a bimbo? To the uninitiated I think the answer would be an obvious resounding "yes". Those familiar with the series may find the question more complex (it isn't). She's not a dumb woman by any means and has her fair share of successes and badassery, but she's also an inept curvy crybaby blonde with big thick lips and a very "slut-tastic" "do-me-riffic" costume.

Her extreme insecurity can render her meek or oblivious. Constantly getting captured and tied up makes her look like a klutz. And I'm not sure this should count, but she likes sex with her boyfriend A LOT.

She's also considered a bimbo in-universe. Not by anybody that knows her closely, of course, but its very widely assumed (as is often the case IRL).

It's less a matter of "can bimbos be smart?" or "bimbos should be dumb" and more a matter of how do you prefer a bimbo's intelligence (or lack thereof) be expressed? What do we mean when we say a bimbo is "hyperfeminine"? What defines femininity?

I think there's two ways to gauge this. Physical femininity - big ass, big tits, clean shaven, soft full lips, etc. Physical femininity can also be expressed through choices in makeup, color, or clothing. Take for example -- drag queens, who can express femininity very clearly while lacking some of the usually associated physical attributes. But then there's also, feminine behavior, the second way to gauge this. Feminine behavior is usually defined by… weakness. Submissiveness. And it's probably why it plays such a big role in this fetish. Feminine behavior can also be associated with gracefulness, gentleness, kindness -- being emotional, dependent, loyal, social, etc -- which are also themes commonly found in bimbofication works. Generally, one of the two (physical femininity or behavioral femininity) will be expected of a bimbo, if not both or a combination of varying degrees (for example: exaggerated soft pouty lips, slutty clothing, and submissive behavior - but a flat chest).

I don't have much to say about this. Yes, I still generally agree with this. It pairs well with my last point and the toolbox theory/sliding scale of bimboism (really not sure what to call it yet) The drag queen example is a little clunky though. I could've just used effeminate gay men in general as an example, and worded it a lot better...

Why does a bimbo act the way they do? Why the look? What does a bimbo want?

For love. Or maybe it's attention, is there really a difference either way? A bimbo wants to be happy, and what makes them happy? Being adored. A bimbo wants to be able to light up a room through their looks, their personality, or maybe both. Some bimbos are happy making others happy. Some bimbos find happiness through what others do for them. Sometimes the love, adoration, and validation of others is enough. Sometimes it's for self-validation. But whatever a bimbo does, they usually do for themselves.

Honestly, it depends entirely on the bimbo and the context in which she exists. A mean, manipulative, bitchy bimbo may act the way she does because she wants the respect or power she thinks she deserves. She values herself highly and thinks everyone else should too. A nice bimbo, ironically, might also act the way she does for the same reason -- because she's high value and pities low value people -- she rather attempt to share her value and be kind to those less fortunate in life.

This one has two because I struggled to come up with a satisfactory answer. Reading it back now I don't really see the point of this question. I still believe bimbos do things for themselves, that's kind of essential to me. I think its because of all the (terrible) bimbofication stories I've read where the man's pleasure is paramount. I do think this applies in general but those stories are really what motivates this "rule" for me. Bimbofication, for me, is not about control. I know it is for some people and that's fine but, and I've said this before, for me its more like MC author Pan (aka panwhowrites) said. Ironically, he's not a bimbo author and as far as I know doesn't really like bimbo stuff but what he said once that applies to bimbofication art and writing to me is that his biggest turn on and interest is female arousal.

The second answer I gave is bad because its half-expressed from my memory. It's based off this:

"Bimbos gravitate toward chaotic good, but are easily shaped by their environment: a bimbo that hangs out with mean girls, might easily assume that bullying is just good fun and doesn't hurt anyone; a bimbo that is spoiled by her sugar daddy can easily become a brat. a bimbo is shaped by her interests and environment like anyone else, don't write a walking self-parody stereotype."

Ghostalope’s Very Long Awaited Ghoul Science Post - Kagune / Ghoul Formation

Good evening humans. I come with my long-awaited ghoul science post.

Wow. Everyone was so excited. You are all so glad that this post is finally out. You are not being manipulated into thinking that. I am not mind-controlling you. Everything is fine.

Yes. Very good. My jackalope cult will be ready in no time.

So, I’ve been talking about my ghoul science since the beginning of my time here, and there’s a reason it’s taken so long. I will explain it why at the end, but I really wanna get into my science.

This post is about the kagune and how ghouls came into existence (in my lore, they go hand in hand). I'll post more stuff later, this is kinda the most important idea related to my science.

Let's start with the core of my idea in very basic terms:

Ghouls are humans that were altered or ‘assimilated’ by an alien organism which eventually developed into the kagune.

Boomie. Simple. Done. Let’s elaborate.

So, in my version of the ghoul science, kagune are not parts of the ghouls, rather individual organisms that live within the ghoul. The term ‘ghoul’ refers to a human and its kagune as one organism, when a ghoul is actually two organisms engaging in a symbiotic relationship.

There are many reasons why I use this idea, one reason behind it is related to energy. I will explain in more detail in another post, but basically; due to the sheer amount of energy ghouls expend and consume, it might make more sense that the kagune has an individual energy system separate to the human body.

Another reason I like this is because - it's aesthetic as fuck and I love aliens. Also it's cool and makes for great horror (which I love writing).

My theory on the type of alien organism the kagune is is also important as to why I like this theory. I have a few ideas as to what the alien organism could be. I wanna do more research into some of these specific organisms, so my explanation of why I choose these organisms is gonna be pretty brief and simple. So, what exactly is the kagune?

Well…There are a few answers!

I think the kagune is a mix of a few organisms. It's an alien, so we can't say for sure what it is exactly, but I can say what it's closest too, or has similiar traits to.

The first ever initial science theory I had on ghouls as a whole was that the kagune was a fungus. I do still lean on this very heavily, but I don’t think it was necessarily the sole perpetuator.

I thought this for a few reasons:

• Superficially, certain types of kagune resemble certain fungi.

• Fungal spores - At first, I theorised that RC cells were actually some kind of fungal spore. I think this could hold up, especially in the end of RE, with the dragon orphans. When they die or become injured, they release an RC-cell heavy toxin that when inhaled by humans, causes them to become ghouls or suffer from RC over-secretion disease. So I ask, could these RC cells actually be fungal spores that can multiply, or are they some kind of seed or virus? (more on that another day though)

• Fungi also commonly engage in symbiotic relationships or use other organisms to survive, the latter is more parasitic, less likely what I think the kagune is. I think the kagune uses the human vessel for survival, and could probably kill its vessel if a situation got extremely dire, but I think overall, the organism is more passive than parasitic.

• Fungi are also basically fucking everywhere they almost certainly had something to do with ghoul development. Like no matter what theory you have, fungi are involved. Because fungi are so prevalent, it's almost likely that there's more evidence to suggest that they're responsible for ghoul development, but as my theories on that aren't as developed, I don't feel comfortable sharing them until I am confident in fungi-knowledge

There are also multiple real world examples of fungi having huge effects on organisms. The most infamous of which being Cordyceps, but I'd prefer to touch on another example - that of an underground fungus, Leucoagaricus.

Leucoagaricus uses leaf cutter ants to survive. The fungus digests leaves, in return producing small mushrooms for the ants to eat. The fungus sends signals to the ants that inform them of the leaf it wants, and the ants go out and collect it.

Basically ; fungi are pretty good at symbiotic relationships, often having the upper hand. I think it’s reasonable to assume that they had a role in ghoul development.

An issue with the fungi theory is related to energy. Fungi are decomposers ; they gain energy by releasing digestive enzymes into their food to decompose it.

This certainly doesn’t discount them, but in my opinion, I think it’s think it's more likely that the kagune is a photoautotrophic organism. They can convert light energy to chemical energy using photosynthesis.

And so, enter idea no. 2 ; kagune are plants or plantlike.

I love this idea. Mainly bc ghouls photosynthesising sounds cute af, but a few other things first.

One of the reason I looked at plants was related to tree bark and the kagune hardening. Whilst the hardening of the kagune could be simple changes in the molecular structure, it could also be a process similar to the process of bark formation of trees, which is a result of secondary growth (an increase in root and stem girth).

Bark generally forms from adding cells to internal layers, which become pushed out and compressed, resulting in cell death. When the cells die, a fibrous material remains, which forms bark. Bark is also formed using cork, through a kind of dehydration. (This is a very basic explanation but I’m not that knowledgeable of bark yet).

Bark is mainly used for protection, but also for transportation (this is mainly done by the living inner bark).

Bark formation typically takes years in the real world, but we’re dealing with an alien here, and I’m not saying that the Kagune is a tree, I think it resembles a tree or stemmed plant in structure. I think it’s possible that the kagune becoming a very hard, tough material could be similar to that of the formation of tree bark.

Also, trees can survive in the human body! A man once thought he had lung cancer, but upon operating the surgeons found a fir tree growing in his lungs! So whilst it’s unlikely, there has been evidence of trees being able to survive in a human host. An alien tree or something could probably do it better. Just sayin’.

Another reason I look at this theory is because some plants can move - namely carnivorous plants and giant water lilies - so they could have some potential for explaining how kagune move so freely? Just a thought. (I lean on alien jargon for that one tbh)

Okay, so that’s some of my ideas on plants, but let’s get into the meat of my plant theory - photosynthesis.

So, y’all know what photosynthesis is, and I’ve mentioned that I think about it due to energy production, so let’s start by looking at what’s needed to photosynthesise.

Firstly, in order to photosynthesise, you need photosynthetic organs. These are most commonly leaves, and ghouls don’t have leaves, do they? So what would they have instead?

Well, photosynthesis takes place in the stoma and grana of the chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs light through photosystems. It absorbs all wavelengths of visible light, except green, which it reflects.

There are plants with leaves of other colours that photosynthesise, however these plants still contain chlorophyll, but the green colour is masked by other pigments known as anthocyanins.

So, we need chlorophyll for photosynthesis, not necessarily leaves. Instead of leaves, I propose that ghouls might have a large patch of discoloured skin on the kagune area (mainly on the posterior side of the body). I will make a post on this itself, but another day.

Alternatively, I propose that ghouls have a period of time everyday where the kagune is released and absorbs light directly.

I think both ideas are possible and probably coexist. I also like the cultural ideas that could stem from this idea of kagune photosynthesis.

I have a lot more to say on plants and kagunes, but most of them aren’t all that scientific and will have separate posts.

The bridge between my fungi and plant theories is a lichen. However, I know almost nothing about lichen, so I can’t say much - only that this could be a good avenue to explore, and one I intend to expand on eventually.

Algae is also another potential idea, but one I doubt, simply because of the nature of algae. It’s not really a big grower like a plant or fungus, it’s more of a spreader.

My final main idea is related to bacteria.

So this idea is actually more related to the how ghouls are solely cannibalistic, in that I think bacteria could play a role in why that is.

Similarly to fungi, bacteria can have huge affects on large populations. An example of this is the bacteria genus Wolbachia, certain species of which have formed mutualistic relationships with their hosts.

Wolbachia is extremely common, most notably in insects and arthropods, and it maintains a firm grip on the reproductive capabilities of its hosts. It can only survive in females, so attempts to increase the female population using feminization (it puts them in a maid outfit and makes them go nyaa), parthenogenesis (Wolbachia says lesbian rights), or by straight-up cock-blocking infected males. (It will also just fucking kill them. The feminist icon we needed tbh).

The point is - Wolbachia is an example of a bacteria that has a high level of control over a species. The point being, that bacteria can have a level of control that drastically affects a population.

It’s possible that this bacteria is another alien organism that exists with the kagune, and this bacteria has an affinity for a certain meat.

This part needs a bit more work, but again, food for thought.

Before I wrap up, I just want to mention a few other ideas I considered. These are more related to the assimilation process that I think the alien organism might’ve used - as in, they were organisms that might’ve been assimilated.

The first is insects. I think insects were involved in general kagune formation, more so in particular types of kagune, but in general they had a role. This is kind of evident from the fact that kagune do resemble insects on a superficial level (they kind of seem chitinous?). Also the fact that there’s literally an example in Tokyo Ghoul of a kagune taking the form of an insect (yes, i know that could’ve been due to mental trauma, but it still gives my theory weight).

One thing I also wanted to mention is their respiratory system. Insects don’t have lungs, they have pores in their exoskeleton known as spiracles. Air enters directly through the spiracles, into the tracheae, which leads into tracheoles (think of tracheoles as capillaries), before air diffuses directly into cells.

It’s possible that the kagune could use this method or a similar one for respiration, (air could also simply diffuse into the kagune). Again, food for thought.

The other group of organisms I wanna touch on is again, somewhat superficial, that being - sea anemones or coral.

I feel like I’m saying this a lot, but I know nothing about either of these. I’d love to get into it, bc I think it’s amazing, but I can’t find any good books on corals and anemones (tell me if u have any recs, I beg).

So this is entirely superficial.

But I noticed about a year ago that probably the closest thing we have in the real world to kagune is probably a sea anemone.

This could be a similar situation to the insects - anemones were assimilated early on - or it could be more than that. I simply don’t have the knowledge to say, but I hope to with time.

When it comes to coral, again, it does appear similar in looks to the kagune - especially in colour. Also, some kinds of coral are very hard, which might have something worth noting. I simply don’t know.

I was also going to look at viruses as an idea, but I’m not sure I really lean into that idea. For one, viruses aren’t living, and the effects of viral infection probably wouldn’t cause ghoul creation, though we’re dealing with aliens, so it’s not impossible. I just don’t think it would work.

Okay. So I think that’s about it for today!

As you can probably see from this post, I have a lot of ideas. A lot.

I’m really excited to expand on them! Those expansions will be in smaller posts. This post is kinda just super long bc it’s my most important base idea. None if my other ideas would make sense with this.

I have other posts on the way, but I love getting asks, so feel free to ask about anything brought up here! It might take me awhile with those asks bc I’m a perfectionist, but I will answer them!

I've been rly worried that another person would out and yell at me. It's been like that with a lot of my TG content. I ended up not feeling welcome in the community bc of these particular people, bc for so long I believed that if I posted anything TG related, they would come and yell at me or make fun of me, especially in regards to science. That's basically what caused me to take my break after that very public breakdown.

But I’m done living in fear. This is my blog, and this community’s my hime. I'm not gonna let my fear of someone else dictate what I can and can't post.

I hope I can post more content like this, and regain my confidence in the community again!

Mirrors

Disclaimer: This was originally going to be much longer (and it is very long already) but since I might have overdone it, I will be cutting it in two. The second part will feature the similarities and differences between Marinette and Kagami and some final thoughts.

Part 2

Kagami’s name means ‘mirror’ in Japanese, and according to Thomas Astruc, that’s not a coincidence. Indeed, she’s supposed to be a reflection of the main characters. This trait is best seen through her role as an alternative love interest for Adrien, but she is also a reflection of Marinette’s own character; more specifically, her own relationship with Adrien.

However, the way Kagami works as a mirror changes from one character to the other. For Adrien, she’s a direct parallel to many of the traits that make him who he is, only that she adds more nuance to them. For Marinette, despite their many similarities, they are also opposites.

In this analysis I will reflect (pun not-intended) on the way Kagami works as Adrien’s mirror, how she does the same for Marinette, and the way that affects her relationship with both of them.

Adrien and Kagami:

As Adrien’s alternative love interest over Ladybug, it is to be expected that Kagami would have enough things in common with him for Adrien to be able to relate to her and see her as something other than a friend.

And this is one of the reasons why Adrien has considered Kagami as his girlfriend and not Marinette; her proximity to his own situation.

Kagami’s introductory episode, Riposte, already focused a lot of its attention in highlighting how similar the two are. Aside from sharing a common interest in fencing (which allows them later on to spend time together outside of school or business-related occasions), Riposte already showed enough of Kagami’s background to make us understand why Adrien would bond with her. Their respective parents are both strict, expect nothing but the best from their kids’ performance in everything they do and, most importantly, they’re both very absent in their lives while simultaneously being present in every aspect of them.

We all know how Gabriel controls every single aspect of Adrien’s life while never spending time with his son at the same time, but Tomoe is just as controlling and overprotective. In Ikari Gozen she considered her daughter having friends should be at the bottom of her priority list, even hinting some trust issues with the sole idea.

And, despite that, in Riposte Kagami was all alone in the car, calling her mother to let her know that she had failed, but not showing any signs of expecting any sort of comfort from her. After all, she said it herself:

“There's no such thing as a second chance in my family.”

Another parallel between Adrien and Kagami is precisely the fact that Tomoe relies on someone else to look after her daughter, just like Gabriel tends to shove his responsibilities with Adrien onto Nathalie and Gorizilla. Except that in Tomoe’s case it’s even worse; she entrusts her daughter to Tatsu, an artificial intelligence, not a human being.

Of course, the similarities between them don’t end there. Adrien and Kagami are pretty much birds of a feather in the sense that both of them are very inexperienced with socialising. They’re both lonely, rich kids with a difficult home life who just want to be able to do things most kids their age do.

That’s why Adrien connected so well with Kagami; they’re on the same boat.

As I said earlier, Kagami acts as a mirror to Adrien, not only because of the similarities that have already been discussed, but also because her personality is very much like Adrien’s, except she either takes things to the extreme, or isn’t as similar to Adrien as she should.

Facing their parents:

Believe it or not, when it comes to calling out their parents for their behaviour, Adrien is more willing to face his father than Kagami her mother.

Ever since his mother disappeared, Adrien’s been trying to be there for his father. Pretty much everything he does that isn’t related to his friends or his life as Chat Noir he does it for Gabriel. He studies Chinese, goes to photoshoots, fences, plays the piano, and any other extracurricular activity I might have forgotten about because he thinks that’s what will make his father happy. Deep down, Adrien knows it’s unfair that he’s forced to live like that, he just sucks it up because he knows his father’s hurting and wants to alleviate that burden.

But whenever Gabriel’s behaviour becomes too unreasonable for even Adrien to excuse, he’s always ready to rebel against him in some way. In Origins he tried and succeeded in going to school instead of staying at home like his father wished. In Santa Claws he ran away from home because of Gabriel’s cold and distant attitude despite being the first Christmas without Emilie for the both of them. In Simon Says, as Chat Noir, he called his father out on his stubbornness and refusal to get help despite being an akuma’s main target. And in Feast he showed his disappointment and disapproval of the way Gabriel brushed Nathalie’s condition off.

And he did all that on his own, either for himself or for the sake of others.

Kagami, on the other hand, still relies on others to face her mother. In Ikari Gozen, despite going against her mother’s wishes, it wasn’t until Marinette had the guts to try and stand up to Tomoe that Kagami managed to put her foot down in her request to spend some time with her new friend. And unlike Adrien as Chat Noir in Simon Says where, despite having some help from the confidence his secret identity gives him, he confronted his father on his behaviour, Ryuuko confronted Ikari Gozen, not Tomoe. In other words, she stood her ground against an exaggeration of her mother’s flaws, not against her mother’s true self.

Moving on:

While the show has shown Adrien having difficulties letting go of Ladybug, the main difference between him and Kagami is that he has at least considered it. Since Frozer, Kagami has shown she will fight for Adrien until the very end.

In fact, of the four teens romantically involved with each other, Kagami is the only one who hasn’t expressed any sort of conformity with the idea of her love interest not choosing her in the end. Even Marinette and Adrien, despite hurting immensely, had considered letting go of their respective crushes and pursuing somebody else when it looked like they were getting nowhere.

In Frozer, despite acting nonchalant about it, Kagami was very clear to Adrien: “The day you realize you've got the wrong target, I'll be here.”

With that she makes it very obvious that she’s willing to wait for Adrien, no matter how long it takes him to realise his feelings for her. That’s Kagami’s approach: she prefers to wait before accepting defeat.

In a way, this makes her a foil to Luka as well.

Ever since Frozer, Luka has shown he will support Marinette if she chooses to go after Adrien instead of him in the end, whereas Kagami, while never outright declaring she won’t be there for Adrien if he weren’t to choose her, she never really hinted she would move on from him if he did, either.

The best example of this would, in a way, be what she said as Oni-Chan: “He's the only one who's worthy of me! And the only one I will ever love!”

If I’m being perfectly honest, this sentence doesn’t do Kagami’s character and her feelings for Adrien justice. The way it was written, it just makes her look unreasonable and like a yandere. And you might say it’s because she was akumatised. And you would be right, if it weren’t because Luka’s confession to Marinette also doubled as a declaration of protection and wasn’t painted in nowhere near the same negative light.

But back to the point.

Summing up, the kind of trouble Adrien has moving on he inherited from his father (in a, thankfully, less worrisome way), Kagami has too, but hers seems to be more severe. And there’s a high chance this will play an important role in Lies, or at least in season 4...

Making friends:

Now, as stated above, this is one of the points they have the most in common but also have the most differences in; their issues with socialising.

What makes the two of them so similar is that they’re both kids who’ve been sheltered their whole life, kids who long to have some friends of their own, and who, as a result, struggle greatly with reading social cues.

However, their respective personalities are what really makes the difference.

Adrien is kind, honest, and approachable, both on a superficial and deep level. Kagami, on the other hand, is all those things, but once you get to know her; at first glance she might seem cold, honest to the point of brutality, and difficult to connect with.

Unlike Lila, who got the class’ attention for her supposed life and high status, these two really are the children of influential people, and yet that’s not why the class appreciates Adrien, or even pretends to get along with Kagami for what it could give them. They’re not that shallow.

The class likes Adrien because he’s a cinnamon roll. And, judging by the girls’ reactions to Kagami in both Frozer and Desperada, they aren’t close to her because they only know her on a superficial, non-flattering level.

They’ve both been sheltered and yet, Adrien manages to connect with others better. While Kagami had to rely on an app to try and get along with Marinette, with rather awkward results. And, let’s not forget, it wasn’t until Marinette got to see Kagami was just like Adrien at the beginning that she realised that she’d misjudged her and actively tried to be her friend.

And now the three of them are close friends! (Leaving shipping drama aside…)

The main difference between the two is that, at first sight, Adrien is more approachable than Kagami.

Recklessness:

As the series progressed, we’ve seen little by little how these two tend to be reckless at times. Especially when handling their miraculouses.

Now, it is true that Marinette has made her fair share of mistakes as well because she was impulsive, but most of the time that flaw shone through as Marinette, not Ladybug. Whereas Adrien and Kagami appeared to be far more composed as their civilian selves (because they have to be due to their parents’ strictness) than their superhero selves.

When they both received their miraculouses they both made the same mistake: they transformed before learning everything they needed to in order to be effective users. In Adrien’s case, he didn’t listen to Plagg when he was about to tell him about the Cataclysm’s time limit. And in Kagami’s she transformed just as Longg was about to tell her about Ladybug’s plan.

As a result, Chat Noir wasted his power when facing off against Stone Heart, and Ryuuko allowed Ikari Gozen to capture Chat Noir.

Moreover, in both cases they viewed their newfound powers as a chance to escape their parents and their lifestyles, both literally and figuratively. Therefore, judging by these similarities as well as the others we have already discussed, I’m going to dub this impulsiveness they display as superheroes as the “Sheltered Rich Kid Syndrome.”

Even so, there is a difference between the two: Kagami was actually more reckless than Adrien when she first transformed.

In Origins, Chat Noir acted on his own not because he wanted to, but because Ladybug was still doubting herself to be of assistance. But, the moment she stepped in and took charge of the situation, Chat followed her plans without hesitation.

Kagami, on the other hand, fuelled by her own issues with her mother, her impulsiveness, and her newfound liberty, insisted on taking on Ikari Gozen by herself without a plan or even Ladybug and Chat Noir’s assistance (despite them being the seasoned heroes of Paris). And this decision lacked forethought because 1) she had no experience fighting akumas, 2) despite her experience fighting her mother, Kagami always loses (and that is when Tomoe has no superpowers), and 3) she obviously had no strategy.

It wasn’t until she ultimately failed and made things more complicated for the heroes that she realised her mistake.

In other words, while both Adrien and Kagami use their alter egos as an escape from their proverbial prisons, Adrien takes his responsibilities as Chat Noir and his loyalty to Ladybug more seriously than Kagami.

Honesty:

I did say earlier that Adrien and Kagami are both honest people. Even so, saying they’re at the same level of honesty would be a lie.

Adrien’s sincerity is what warmed Marinette up to him, just like it did for Kagami, but he’s nowhere near as honest as Kagami.

As @miraculouslycool and @flightfoot pointed out not long ago, Lila is actually what Adrien would have turned into if it weren’t for his redeeming qualities and the use he gives to his abilities. Because both are kids who have learned to be sneaky in order to get what they want. Adrien can’t afford to have his father finding out about the things he hides from him because it would lead to disastrous consequences, like when he pulled him out of school over the grimoire.

True, Adrien chooses to be honest, kind to others, and the best person he can possibly be. Major kudos for that. But he’s still not above lying or using relatively underhanded tactics to get the results he wants. The best example being his lie to Théo about being an item with Ladybug just to get him to back off.

In a way, that could be a reason why he’s so disgusted by Lila’s behaviour. Unlike him, she doesn’t use her lies and manipulation as a last resort, she uses them with everyone regardless of her interactions with them and the consequences of her actions just because she can.

But I’m getting off topic.

As stated above, Adrien chooses to be honest, but is perfectly capable of being sly and sneaky. He knows how to operate in the shadows.

Kagami doesn’t.

And that is probably because in her case not being honest is what can get her in serious trouble, let alone if she misbehaves or not. So, fear of the consequences tied with a natural disdain for lies have made Kagami to be honest to a fault.

And this wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if it weren’t for the fact that she’s so honest, she becomes brutally honest; coming off as rude to others. To put it simply, Kagami doesn’t know how to sugarcoat things, for one reason or another. Which is why her assessment on Marinette’s personality based on her deduction of her blood type and a single question about her favourite season can be seen as rude or impolite. And it is perfectly fine to see it like that! After all, that is the conclusion many of us would arrive at if we were in Marinette’s situation and had no context on why the other person is acting like that.

Honestly, if I’d been in Marinette’s shoes, I would’ve been like, “Joke’s on you. I’m type A.”

Basically, while Adrien is used to working in the shadows, Kagami is forthright and prefers to face things head on, and both are mindsets and strategies with strengths and weaknesses.

The rings:

Now this is another delicious parallel between the two, just like Marinette and Luka both have earrings.

As we’ve been saying all along, Adrien and Kagami both have a lot on their plate. They have many responsibilities that can become a burden in the long run, especially when we keep in mind that they are still children. Just like Marinette is exhausted from having to be level-headed and responsible in so many scenarios.

However, the rings Adrien and Kagami wear are both parallels and opposites from one another. They both represent some kind of responsibility at their core, but the effects of said responsibility vary.

In Adrien’s case, he wields the black cat miraculous. Needless to say, this ties him with the duties that come from being Chat Noir and having the power of destruction by his side. A power that, as seen in Miraculer and the New York Special, can be disastrous if handled poorly. And yet, his miraculous actually represents the best part of his life, because it gives him freedom. Being Chat Noir has allowed him to be himself, without the restraint from his father’s presence. It gave him the chance to meet Ladybug who, aside from being the girl he loves, is also his best friend. The miraculous has just… given him a chance to live.

Adrien’s ring is his saving grace.

On the contrary, Kagami’s ring represents the kind of duties she’s far more familiar with. Her ring ties her to her family.

That ring is a constant reminder of the pressure she’s under, of her family’s expectations, of the person she’s been raised to believe she should be. Which is symbolised by her family’s kanji being engraved on the ring.

As seen in Riposte, when Kagami loses any kind of challenge she’s supposed to have been prepared for, she believes she has let her family down.

Kagami’s ring is the lock of her golden cage.

the divine dogs aren't just useful in a fight against curses but also when faced with emotional battles.

There was a soft knock on his door and when Megumi opened it he found you standing in front of it, nervously shifting around as you fiddled with your fingers.

You looked cute, he noticed.

Your hair was disheveled and your face clear of any makeup. You were only wearing an oversized hoodie with, what he recognized to be, pikachu shorts underneath.

Yes, you looked cute.

He opened the door a little wider and you scurried inside, face lighting up when you noticed the divine dogs were already summoned, sitting in front of his bed. As soon as they saw you entering they had started wagging their tails and you smiled happily.

He didn’t know how you had done it, but they liked you. Megumi had never seen the dogs so excited to see someone. They were usually nonchalant, not paying much attention to the general humans as they were fixed on curses. With you there was a difference.

He couldn’t help but ask himself if maybe that was because of him, if they could pick up on his feelings for you and liked you because of that.

You were already kneeling on the floor and eagerly patting the dogs heads and they happily rubbed their heads against your hands, panting.

Megumi sat down on the bed behind you, eyes watching you with fondness as you started talking to his dogs in a baby voice and caressed their fur and scratched behind their ears.

He hadn’t asked why you had wanted him to summon the dogs, he felt it was inappropriate and out of place after you pleaded him over text, the desperation clear as day. The humor all your interactions naturally included had been missing.

You were a person that hardly took anything too serious.

In the beginning he wasn’t too sure what to think about that, or you, for the matter. You’d joke about everything, no situation deemed too serious or professional to not make humorous comments.

That was probably why you got along with Gojou-sensei so well. Both of you were utter crackheads at times, hardly ever responsible with the words you were spouting.

In every area, that was.

When you had started making comments about being attracted to the King of curses, and how absolutely “hot and sexy” his “tatts” were... the bluntness and insolence your words held, it had shocked him.

You were always upfront and naively honest about everything that went on in your head, and despite your silliness he learned to respect that about you.

He also realized rather quickly that your humor was part of your charm and that despite mostly cracking jokes in any given situation you were well aware of the seriousness of the matter. When push came to shove you could put aside your penchant for humor, although never completely and get the work done.

He liked that about you.

Megumi had grown quite fond about all the little behavioral traits you exhibited, that made you you. While in the beginning, when the two of you had just met, he hadn’t thought much of you, now you belonged to the very few people he respected very dearly.

So much, he had reconsidered questioning you about your reasons for wanting to see the divine dogs this late at night, when you messaged him. He had decided he could still ask you when you arrived at his door, but then he’d seen your messy appearance and it had thrown him off guard.

And now you looked so peaceful with your hands buried in his dogs’ fur, that cute little smile on your lips. You were so content in that moment, he’d feel bad if he interrogated you now.

He almost decided to just let you be, lie down and pretend to read a book so he could watch you subtly without it seeming creepy.

Then white dog licked over your cheek and for some reason it seemed to trigger something inside you, because the next moment you suddenly buried your head into the dog’s furry neck, clinging to him tightly.

Megumi watched in surprise.

That was a little too affectionate, even for you.

Only then he noticed your shoulders were shaking with every breath you took and the almost inaudible sound of sniffles that reached his ears. You were crying.

Black dog, who had noticed as well, dropped his head into your lap and although he was a little surprised on how well adjusted they were with the emotional depth of a human, he was feeling a little useless in comparison.

He wanted to help you, as well.

“Y/n...” he started, deciding that if he wanted to comfort you as well it was better to do it now, “are you feeling alright?”

Despite the attempt to keep his voice as calm and monotone as he could, he still feared the question alone had been crossing a line.

One thing he had noticed about you was that although you seemed to be perfectly aligned with your emotions and fine with others knowing about your state of mind at any given moment, considering how naively honest you were, you were actually very private in that matter.

You were often honest about the superficial feelings you experienced in situations and weren’t ashamed of crying when it seemed appropriate, say when dealing with a sad movie (a story about dogs...those seem to always get you), but what you showed to others was only the surface of it all.

You chose carefully what you wanted to share with the rest of them all, and to Megumi’s disappointment you never came to him or anyone else when you were experiencing serious sadness.

Well, you hadn’t been until now.

At his question you had pulled back slightly, just enough so Megumi could hear you, but still too hidden by the fur for him to see your face.

“Yeah, sorry...i...i’m just feeling a little emotional that’s all,” you replied softly, voice strained from tears.

If he was a little closer to you he would have deemed it appropriate to hug you, but he knew that the both of you weren’t on that level, yet.

“May i ask why?”

You chuckled, probably at his choice of words. That was okay, though, it seemed to cheer you up a little.

“Just haven’t been feeling all too great, missing my family a little bit,” you muttered, one hand reaching out to pat the head of the dog lying on your lap as you kissed the top of the white dog’s head.

Megumi hummed, encouraging you to continue talking. He wanted to know what made you feel this way and preferably how to make you feel better, if you’d only let him.

“I...you know dogs, when you pet them you release all these happy hormones? Like serotonin, oxytocin and prolactin. It calms you down, that why dogs are often used as emotional support animals, too,” you explained in a quiet voice, unusually shy about what you were saying.

Megumi couldn’t figure out why.

“I didn’t know that,” he admitted, because he hadn’t.

He never had a dog, an actual one, or known anyone with a dog and although the divine dogs may appear similar to the animal, they weren’t real dogs, either.

“Yeah...i know it’s not really the same but i thought maybe your dogs would have a similar effect and petting them would make me feel better,” you continued, before hastily adding, “I’m sorry, i am totally exploiting you for selfish reasons.”

Megumi couldn’t help but shake his head at your remark, partly fond of how you were concerned about him, partly confused why’d you even come to that conclusion.

“I am happy that I can help you feel better, if only through my ability to summon the divine dogs.”

That was the first time you turned to look at him since you’d stepped into his room and the smile you were giving him was absolutely blinding. Your red eyes seemed to sparkle at his comment, too.

“You’re too kind, Megumi.”

He returned your smile, hoping it was just partly as reassuring as yours was.

The both of you sat in silence, Megumi racked his brain for a way to distract you even more from thoughts of homesickness and cheer you up but his mind came back blank.

He wasn’t really the best when it came to ted talks, Itadori would have been a much better candidate for that, or Gojou sensei, who was specialised at distracting others with his silliness. If only he were a little more competent in one of those areas.

“I think they like you.”

He didn’t know why he had said it, it was just the first thing to come to his mind.

You looked up in surprise, the white dog nudging you into your side when your hand stopped moving though its fur. Your eyes fell down at it in confusion and then a wide smile broke out on your face.

It was beautiful. Blinding.

“You think so?” you ask happily, turning back to look at him for a second, before resuming to pat the dog in your lap.

Megumi watched, smiling softly at the exchange.

“Yeah.”

You hummed in content.

Maybe he wasn’t too bad at it, judging by your lightened up features and the soft upwards curve of your move as you continued coddling his dogs.

Anyway, if you asked him, he’d summon the divine dogs for you anytime if that gave him an excuse to have you around more.

Thus far the research reviewed in this essay has been persuasive in its accounting of the narrowing and repressive effects of whiteness for knowledge production and for the experiences of students and faculty of color in the field of psychology. However, it would be a mistake to believe that whiteness in the psychological imagination only has implications for people of color or only for people who work and study in the field of psychology. Taking the widespread influence of whiteness into account, the remainder of this essay seeks to explore two questions. These two questions are related to the quotes that opened this essay. The first quote is taken from Toni Morrison's groundbreaking work, Playing the Dark: Whiteness in the Literary Imagination. In that book, she undertakes the task of trying to understand the people who have crafted the image of whiteness (and blackness) that she sees abound in American literature. In her view, whiteness in American literature is parasitical, nourishing itself on the imagined oppositeness of blackness. Whiteness is made superior by the supposed inferiority of blackness. It is made great by the degradation of its counterparts. Whiteness has the same function in the psychological imagination. It penetrates the psyches of all people, regardless of race and ethnicity, with white supremacy. White people-whether or not they internalize this cultural domination, actively engage in racism or racial microaggressions, or exploit people of color for economic prosperity-benefit from the image of whiteness in the psychological imagination. However, what does the other side of the coin look like. In other words: "What are the benefits and costs of whiteness in the psychological imagination for white people?"

Whiteness in the psychological imagination offers white people purpose, power, and protection. It offers purpose by making white people's mental health and lived experiences foundational. White people are constructed as prototypes whose psychological experiences are the starting point from which all other people's experiences begin to be understood and the desired endpoint, which all other people must reach to be considered healthy or human. This purpose intersects with the power bestowed upon them.

Whiteness in the psychological imagination imparts an authority to and a preferencing of white people's experiences. Even when the topic of study is pathology, white people's pathology is still held as the standard for what deviations from "normative" behavior should look like. Therefore, even white people's unhealthy behaviors are considered more desirable. No matter what they do, prosocial, asocial, or antisocial, it is still considered better. Therefore, there is no way for white people to ever be in any position but at the top of a constructed psychological hierarchy. Psychology has given white people power through its empirical support for the demonization, marginalization, and stigmatization of people of color. It is a shackle for people of color and a throne for white people.

Whiteness in the psychological imagination protects white people from grappling with how their embodiment of whiteness is cancerous. It does not require them to consider the lives of people of color and the deleterious effects of whiteness. Their survival is not dependent on such knowledge. The centering of white people's experiences allows white people to be blind to the experiences of people of color. They can remain oblivious to, ignore, forget about, erase or render historical-and thus, make irrelevant-the exploitation, domination, and disenfranchisement of people of color. This privilege of ignorance perpetuates their focus on themselves and the marginalization of others. White people have the option to advance in a world delusionally believing there are no consequences for their actions.

The belief that whiteness does not scar the person who embraces it is erroneous and perverted. The costs of the psychological imbuement to whiteness of purpose, power, and protection are a sense of heightened threat/defensiveness, emptiness, and loneliness/disconnection. People at the top of a hierarchy need others to be placed beneath them. Otherwise, their status at the top is meaningless. A surplus of exploited and disenfranchised people is a necessity for whiteness to have any benefit. It is the exploited and disenfranchised people who white people measure their whiteness against. It is these people through whom they can work out their own self-image and put to work for their own financial, psychological, and social benefit. However, this positioning is tenuous and always will be, as human nature is not meant to be exploitatively hierarchal. Imbedded in whiteness is a zero-sum mentality that believes that if one person or group possesses a thing or trait the other person or group cannot also share that possession or trait. Thus, there is a heightened sense of threat that the benefits of whiteness can be taken away at any time. Defensiveness develops to guard those benefits. This defensiveness is seen in the backlash against psychological research that attempts to move away from white-centered discourses and racial comparative research to an indigenous paradigm that preferences narratives of people of color. It is seen in the psychological genocide that is carried out by whiteness in its centering of definitions and policies-in media, educational institutions, financial markets, health services, and governmental agencies-that are diametrically opposite and detrimental to peoples' of color images and interests (Kambon, 1980). A constant sense of heightened threat and defensiveness-conscious, subconscious, or unconscious-keeps people at arms-length. People with such defensiveness find themselves living a life of paranoia and hypervigilance.

The sense of purpose that whiteness in the psychological imagination provides for white people is empty. It is inextricably tied to the meaning of their whiteness. However, the centrality of whiteness is a distorted mental machination. It is a superficial prize that inflates the ego with a fictitious substance. If a purpose and identity is built upon a distortion that sets it as opposite and superior to others, what happens when whiteness is discovered to be a fraud? Again Toni Morrison's words come to mind. In an interview with Charlie Rose in 1993 she spoke about the hollowness of race and its racist use. She stated,

"But if the racist white person-I don't mean the person who is examining his consciousness and so on-doesn't understand that he or she is also a race, it's also constructed, it's also made, and it also has some sort of serviceability. But when you take it away, if I take your race away, and there you are, all strung out, and all you've got is your little self. And what is that? What are you without racism? Are you any good? Are you still strong? Are you still smart? You still like yourself?"

White people who embrace whiteness are completely dependent on it and they are seldom aware of their addiction and delusion, and if aware constantly suppressing and denying it. In its attempted cooptation of humanity, whiteness renders white people inhuman. It transforms white people into an ideal of perfection. This ideal is unrealistic and hollow.

Whiteness in the psychological imagination deprives white people of a concept of themselves as interdependent members of a human family with many diverse members. Critical psychological elements of whiteness such as competitiveness, power-dominance drive, assertiveness-aggression, and anxiety avoidance pit them against their human brethren (Kambon, 1992, 1998). These values foster loneliness/disconnection. This is because, often, whiteness erases itself from the psyche of white people and replaces it with a universalism that centers their experiences as the only legitimate experiences. Therefore all they see are reflections or iterations of themselves. When confronted with people of color, they view these folks as people to be ignored, appropriated, or eliminated (Lorde, 1984) and not as human beings with whom to commune as equals. Whiteness in the psychological imagination alleges that people can survive on their own with rugged individualism and materialism, separated from the spiritual and psychological collective.

The second question, to be addressed in this section, is inspired by James Baldwin's quote at the beginning of this essay. Baldwin's quote highlights the reflective nature of definitions. The qualities and worth that one confers to someone else is of direct proportion to the qualities and worth one confers to her/himself. If one marginalizes another's experience, in actuality she/he is forcing something of her/his own experience (own being) out of view and possibly out of consciousness. This is a detrimental thing because it creates fractional, unhealthy human beings that are narrowed and egotistic, cut off from themselves and others. It seems, to me, that this is only remedied when one values her/himself enough to recognize the humanity of another as just as inextricably tied to her/his own and just as significant. So my second question is, "How does one go about freeing her/himself from whiteness in the psychological imagination to live a more whole, integrated life?" While, I have posed this question, I will not answer it. Too often, people of color are as asked to provide the suggestions for how white people can begin to grapple with and overcome their whiteness. I refuse to do the work for people who are afflicted (willingly or otherwise) with whiteness. I will leave that work to them.

If white people knew who they were, they would not need to define themselves in relation to others. They would not feel a need to stifle the breath of others to suck in air. They would let go of their zero-sum mentality and realize that their survival is inextricably related to the survival of all of the colored peoples of the world. White people are a statistical minority. There is no way that they can survive through sheer whiteness alone. Whiteness is a delusion that has created a race of schizophrenics separated from themselves and others. But that is because so many white people do not recognize their inherent worth. Their ideas of supremacy are grounded in the machinations of their whiteness and separateness, not their humanness or connectedness. There is no need for this. If white people can let go of their whiteness, educate themselves-and not rely on or requests that others do so-commune without ulterior motives, they can begin to embody the fullness of humanity that is based in the reality of community and not the illusion of superiority and materialism. When white people can let go of whiteness, they will recognize themselves as human and not need to dehumanize others and co-opt people of color identities, land, and cultural creations to lionize themselves. White people are not dumb; they are not evil. Whiteness, however, is evil. It is an arrogant ignorance. It is a poison that must be rejected in the psychological imagination and in the minds of all people-those with white and melanized skin.

The centering of whiteness in psychology is not only a cancer to society but also a detriment to the field of study. It renders psychology fraudulent in its claims to understand the human psyche. As discussed before, the overwhelming body of psychological research marginalizes people of color who constitute the majority of the human species. Whiteness in the psychological imagination paints an erroneous picture of psychological phenomena, limits the psychological knowledge base, and stifles a more true understanding of the complex, multifaceted experience of the human.

Modual: Kickstarter (Days 4 and 5)

The morning of Modual day 4 began with presentations of each group’s mood board. I was the only member of my group in London while the other three were in Glasgow so we presented over Fuze, a virtual meeting room. My group and I explained the vision for the project -- since the concept was still fairly new to my group members I took the lead on outlining the specifics. I made sure to pay close attention to the men in the room as I was presenting since this topic has proven to be somewhat eyebrow raising to that demographic. Earlier in the year when this project was more about men and makeup, whenever I would speak to straight men about my intentions they usually seemed uncomfortable or at best, skeptical. I would share this with tutors, classmates and friends who all pointed out that the word ‘makeup’ was probably what was throwing them. A key part of Thursday’s presentation outlined the intention to change the terminology and rename makeup so that a larger group of people will become comfortable with the idea of using it, whether that’s on their faces, bodies, or entirely different canvases.

After every group across London and Glasgow presented their mood boards (I think there were 16 or 17 in total) everyone was given three stickers. We were instructed to put our stickers on the mood boards of the project ideas that interested us the most. I chose my own project, a fellow Applied Imagination student’s project on making the circular economy more creative, and a project that would involve putting plastic into a vending machine and having it come out as a piece of art. The guidelines were that each mood board would have to receive enough interest between London and Glasgow to continue as a full-fledged project that would go ahead for the rest of the workshop. Ultimately, my project garnered enough attention and interest to become one of the final seven.

I’m now part of a team of eight students, two of us are in London and six are in Glasgow. It’s extremely reassuring once again to see that people believe in my project idea to the point that they’ll dedicate a week of their time to making it stronger and eventually launch it on Kickstarter.

For the rest of Thursday my project group and I communicated over Appear In, another virtual meeting room. Here we are:

We went through the Six Thinking Hats exercise as it pertained to this project. The Six Thinking hats is a technique I actually tried earlier in the year in a separate workshop with former MA Applied Imagination students Cvetana and Jean Jacques. The system was designed by Edward de Bono and describes a tool for group discussion and individual thinking involving six colored hats. We focused on four of the six hats.

The Yellow Hat - this hat symbolizes brightness and optimism. Under this hat you explore the positives and probe for value and benefit.

The "New Kid," Making New Friends as an Adult.

If you’ve ever started something new as an adult, I’m sure you’ve felt that “new kid” sting. It can send us right back to the days of braces, square pizza, and recess. We peddle around seeking and prodding to belong. To make matters worse, as an adult we’ve been taught that this “new kid” experience is just that; it’s for kids; that we’ll grow out of it as we become these awesome, accepted, belonging, valued individuals. And maybe we won’t even need friends because we are just so darn self-sufficient and independent. Right? I wish.

I am drawn to write about this right now because I’m going through it in my life. It’s uncomfortable and I feel a bit like I’m dating again. But the more I look at it, I’m finding that that makes perfect sense. We search for soul mates, boyfriends, spouses, like its our job. But since many of us have stumbled upon our besties at work, school, or elsewhere, it feels strange that we may have to go out in search of friends. But honestly, it’s not so different from seeking out your next special someone.

Why does making new friends become harder as we get older?

We don’t meet herds of new people the way little kids do. New sports, new lessons, schools, etc, they are often around new people. Adults, unless we make the effort to be, usually are not.

We make the requirements to be our friends increasingly difficult to meet. Are you…..Christian? Brunette? Stylish? Hindu? Where do you shop? Whats your job? What kind of stroller do you use? Are you married? We observe their body and makeup and jobs and connections in addition to how we feel around them. Kids do not. Do you like unicorns? I do too! Done and done. With children, if there’s fun, if there are good feelings, there is a friend. Simple.

We don’t prioritize nurturing our friendships as other life responsibilities mount up. Most of us treat the coffee date with a friend, the girls night out, the guys weekend away, as a luxury. Reality? You need it. I need it.

We’ve been taught and allowed to disguise our fears or distort our natural tendenciesby labeling ourselves things like “loner,” “lone wolf,” “different,” “independent,” “better off alone,” or “introvert.” Reality? We may recharge differently and need different amounts of time with people versus time alone. But we all need human connection. People need people (Cue Barbra Streisand…”People…people who need people…“).

Our fears are more set than our children’s. And its likely that we are either blissfully unaware that our “new people dealing habits” are steeped in fears. Or if we are aware of it, we staunchly defend our ways and stick to the beliefs we’ve created about new people.

Steps and Tips towards Making New Friends:

Drop the shame for wanting it. The desire for human connection is the most natural thing in the world. At one point in history, our survival was hinged on our belonging to a group. Its natural. So instead of feeling immature, or silly, embrace that desire, lean in, and move on to tip # 2.

Discover your preferences. This is a 2-fold exercise. First, list what you’d like your new friend to be like. Next, cross off anything that is not a character trait or value. Open yourself up to the possibility of connecting to someone who is totally different than you. The 2nd part of this exercise- make another list of friendships that did not pan out. I don’t mean ones that were and then fell apart. Perhaps you met, exchanged info., maybe you went for a coffee? But then what? Why did this relationship stop there? Is it because you felt something around them you didn’t like? Was the ending on their side? Did you have a great time together but it ended due to inactivity? Did this person meet your criteria listed in part 1? This leads me to #3.

Recognize that they may not need a new friend (that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be happy to have one). But they don’t need it and you do. SO you may have to do more pursuing in the beginning. Those friendships that didn’t develop? Maybe they didn’t need a new friend but if you’d pursued it longer, would it have developed? Accept to walk that weird grey area, commit to pursue a friendship, understand that you may face rejection and agree that that’s ok. This doesn’t mean to invite them out every single day. It means to be willing to be more proactive for a while, to use your instincts, trust your gut, and to actually pay attention how you feel around this person. This is just like dating! Do you have fun together? Can you be yourself? Do get the sense they are also themselves with you? Do you share values? Can you appreciate the ways you’re discovering that you’re different? Can you disagree? When you’re together, are they checking their watch or phone the whole time? Or are they engaged? Pay attention and don’t cling to the prospective of a new friendship because you’re lonely. You deserve real, connected friendships, not ones you settle on because feeling alone sucks. Give it some time. Then let go of people and friendships that continue to be one-sided, or don’t feel good.

Embrace fear and notice how you function in it. Meeting new people can be scary. Like many people, I am ok with the first impressions and superficial stuff. Weather. Family. Kids. Jobs. But then what? After this, I oscillate between pouring out information about my life and freezing up, stuck. Blank. It’s awkward and sadly, seems to just be the way I deal and get through encounters with new people. This awkward scene is how I function in my fear; fear of rejection, fear of never belonging, fear of being left out. Observe your ways. Give yourself some grace. Then embrace the fear, acknowledge it for what it is; an honorable attempt to keep you from pain. And then call up that friend and invite them to coffee, for a drink, on a play date, whatever. And if you go through your awkward dance, then so be it. Smile. It’s ok, we’re all kinda weird.

Accept that there is a process. There is a “dating” period. They are still feeling you out. Being new and desiring a sense of belonging can be rough, but don’t just nuzzle up to someone because they are most welcoming (though we do appreciate these folks). Instead take the time to figure out what they’re all about. Pay attention. Spend time together doing normal things. Perhaps invite them on your Target run. If you can keep showing up, eventually that awkward fear-dance from step 4 will pass. Eventually you’ll see that you’re ok and that you’ll be ok, however this and any other friendship pans out. You’ll eventually manage to relax into it. Let them reveal themselves to you in their way and time. And you do the same. Don’t show up as someone you are not; it sounds juvenile, but us adults want to fit in it too, and sometimes we behave inauthentically to do so. Let the friendship grow, if it will, in an organic way. And remember, all good things take time.

Extra Thoughts & Tips:

New place, new friendships, new you. Embrace the opportunity to find friends for the person you’re becoming now. Sometimes bffs from another life time, no matter how awesome they are, make it hard to move into something new. You can love someone and also recognize that their place in your life needs to change to make space for something or someone new.

There is such a thing as too different. Our differences are amazing and make the world go round. That being said, it’s going to be hard to grow a real, deep friendship with someone with whom you share no interests and no values.

The people your life naturally takes you around- Do you know your coworkers? Your neighbors? The people in your church? If not, make the effort to meet and get to know them. If life isn’t naturally taking you the places you need to find people, then make it happen. Find the groups, the communities, the playgroups, the book clubs, the coven, the nature walkers, whatever- find where your people may be and show up!

Make notes. If you’re in a situation (new jobs, new churches, etc) where you’re meeting lots of new people, take notes. I keep a note in my phone. I jot down a new person’s name and something that may help me remember them. Martha, sat beside me at church. Short curly hair. Told me the President Lincoln letter story. I don’t study these notes or anything weird, but before I go into service on Sunday, I check my phone to see who I met last time. Can I find them? Recognize them? They may not remember me or know how I remember their name. But they appreciate it. And from these warm feelings, even if it’s not the roots of a deep friendship, can go a long way in lending to a sense of community and belonging. When I know them, I delete the note.

Make a goal of it. Pencil in your planner that this week you are going to invite_____ for a play date at _____. Then do it. And set a little friendship-initiating goal for yourself for each week. Baby steps.

It’s true that there are clingy people, toxic people, people who’s sole goal is to bring you into the fold at their church, to save your soul, to leech favors. These people do exist. But we “date” before we commit in order to learn who someone is and hopefully discern and separate from these folks. Beyond that, if you find yourself strapped to someone you don’t want to be…break up! Yes, I am talking about friendships here. Sometimes you need to break up. It’s not mean. It’s kind to you. The point in sharing this isn’t to make you hide-away to avoid this ever happing, but to point out that you are never really stuck. So don’t be afraid, take your time, embrace the process.

fixing star wars episode viii

I am aware this is maybe article number 1 million and ten written over the past 8 months on this film. We’ve had articles praising it and articles critiquing it and articles accusing a haircut of having a secret Illuminati agenda. But I think I can offer a perspective that is severely under-represented online. So here goes.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is not a perfect film. This is true. However, it’s also true of literally any film released since the Lumière brothers were the avant-garde face of cinema. Apart from Sing Street. Sing Street is a perfect movie go watch it.

However, it’s also true that Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is a good film. In fact, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable, beautifully shot, emotionally resonant masterpiece. And not just surface-level good – its brilliance runs deep enough, thematically, that months after its release, I still feel like I have something new to bring to the table.

A quick disclaimer. I’m not going to address the fact that many people do not share my unabashed, unending love for this film. There are plenty of people, much smarter than me, already fighting that battle. See Shaun’s YouTube video ‘Why I love the Last Jedi’ on the topic. What follows is my take, pure and simple, on the changes I think could have helped the movie.

OK, prepare to jump to light speed.

Point of contention number one – the political situation in the Galaxy. I have so many questions, and yes, maybe they are answered in Wookiepedia articles, but honestly I prefer to soak in my Star Wars through my eyes and my ears and my heart and not through my brain. How long were the New Republic in power? What did they control? What was their relationship to the Resistance? How was the First Order formed? What do they control? These are questions that, in all honesty, should have been answered in The Force Awakens (TFA), before we lost one of these three major players. But that doesn’t let The Last Jedi (TLJ) off the hook.

We know why, of course. It’s because one of the lessons Lucasfilm has taken from the fan reaction to the prequel series is that the people are simply uninterested in the politics, at least insomuch as it relates to the Skywalker Saga. Maybe true, probably not. As usual, Hollywood has decided to blame the plot elements of the movie instead of admitting that, well, they may have made a bad movie. But at least a basic grounding in the state of things is vital to understanding the plot of these films, which, after all, are at least superficially about an ideological conflict on a galactic scale.

And really, there is no excuse when every single film opens with a huge block of text perfect for getting exposition out of the way. So our easy fix here is modifying the opening crawl of TFA, which hopefully should free both films from the lingering confusion.

Done, dusted and onto issue number two – the pacing. With a running time of 151 minutes, it’s a testament to Rian Johnson’s engaging screenplay that at no point in the film do those minutes seem to drag by. And he had a harder job than JJ Abrams – it is one job to keep things tight in a rip-rolling adventure romp, where as soon as one scene finishes, it’s a wipe transition into another action set-piece. Quite another in a film that allows slightly more breathing space for contemplation and internal conflict. TFA is a boisterous, excitable 11 year old of a movie, whereas TLJ is a more broody, introspective, but also more mature teenager.

That being said, if ever you were tempted to check your watch or stretch your legs or bake a pavlova or finish your dissertation on the economics of llama farming, I would wager you would take the opportunity at around the 54 minute mark – the first appearance of Canto Bight into the B-plot of the movie.

The entire B-plot of the film is based around the contrivance of a game of cat and mouse between two enemy starships. Except this chase takes place over 18 hours. Which makes it difficult to develop a sense of urgency when the occupants literally have time to watch all of the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions and make a good start on the Hobbit. If we can’t rely on urgency – we at least need inevitability. But sending characters on a side-mission to another planet really undercuts any tension and claustrophobia that has painstakingly been established here.

What I propose here is not quite as radical as your imagining. We are keeping many elements of this much maligned plot-tangent exactly the same. Instead, our fix is simply to make this the opening scene:

The mission is Resistance-mandated: free DJ from jail. There is no misdirect here – DJ is the code-breaker. It doesn’t really matter why he is necessary – maybe to sell weapons or ships, maybe for his knowledge of the First Order technology. In any case, Poe and Finn, who are tasked with this mission, don’t really need to know that. Poe is under instruction to retrieve DJ, then drop Finn off to go and look for Rey. Unfortunately, this last part doesn’t play out – Poe receives a distress call so they have to return immediately to the Resistance fleet. The First Order has tracked them through light-speed and they are under attack. Cue the original opening sequence.

Allow me to fight my corner:

1 All necessary set-up can be provided in the opening crawl. Which gets rid of the un-necessary and frankly un-nerving Maz Kanata cameo.

2 This gives the opportunity to send Poe with Finn, instead of Rose. A favourite pairing from TFA gets more screen time together. Seeing as Rey doesn’t meet Poe until literally the end of this film, it is important that the other two sides of the triangle formed with our original characters are strong by the end of TLJ.

3 This gives the chance to strengthen Finn’s character arc. This way, his growth from sceptic to revolutionary is pulled into focus. Despite the injustices he witnesses on Canto Bight, he follows DJ’s advice of impartiality and tries to abandon ship. Enter Rose.

4 The fact that DJ works for both sides can play as a reveal to Poe, so he is surprised when he realises Holdo is already aware of this. This gives Poe more reason to be distrustful of Holdo.

5 It is important thematically that Rey, Poe, Finn and Rose are all given roughly equal heroic treatment. However, in the current situation, Rey is veering uncomfortably close to becoming a ‘chosen one’. This streamlined B-plot helps to slightly redress the imbalance.

And finally – issue number three – Rose. Not Rose as in her character – she is set up to introduce an interesting dynamic to our leads. Not Rose as in Kelly Marie Tran’s performance - she brings energy and warmth and spunk to every scene she is in and I will not hear a word against her goddamn it. Instead, the problem lies in how Rose is treated within the screenplay. She has plenty to do, but most is inconsequential, and the rest is poorly executed. This is where I would recommend the biggest changes.

Rose is a lover, not a fighter. And by lover I of course mean mechanic. Give her a chance to utilise her skills. Obviously, if everything had gone to plan she would have disabled the light-speed tracker. But it didn’t and she doesn’t. There needs to be another opportunity for Rose to display her talents. My personal suggestion? See those speeder things? This planet was abandoned. I’m very doubtful those speeders were in battle ready condition when the Resistance arrived. Give Rose a quick montage of turning a whole heap of junk into a somewhat driveable speeder.

And then don’t make her drive one! Let’s have some diversity in our leads! Not like racial diversity, although that’s also a bonus. No, I’m talking diversity in character traits. And it is there already, I just think there would be stronger differentiation if we give Rose more of a behind-the-scenes role vis-à-vis action scenes.

What about knock-on consequences I hear you cry? What would happen to Finn? It doesn’t really matter – any old plot contrivance. Have the Falcon reappear and knock Finn’s speeder out of the way. Have one of the ATATs actually aim on target and knock Finn’s speeder out of the way. Have a giant teleporting Wookie materialise and knock Finn’s speeder out of the way. Pick any of the above, or all of them, I literally do not care.

As a side note, I think this could also help streamline the overall thematic texture of the film. We are definitely being sent mixed messages regarding the ethics of personal sacrifice for a military cause. Paige’s sacrifice is brave and good. Holdo’s sacrifice is brave and good. Finn’s sacrifice is brave but stupid. And that subtext is largely down to one line. ‘That’s how we’re going to win. Not fighting what we hate but saving what we love.’ Yes, I know that this is Rose talking and her views on the matter have likely been strongly influenced by the death of her sister in a very similar situation at the start of the film and this line was likely not meant to be interpreted as a mission statement. But it still reads like that because of the language of the film-making. Everything about this scene – the swelling score and the fiery back-lighting and the intense close-up is telling the audience that this line is of critical importance.

If Finn has to make his way back to the base before reuniting with Rose, there’s a beat in the screenplay which ensures Finn’s heroism is not undercut. Rose still gets the character depth coming from that line-reading. And the viewer gets to understand that this is a statement coming from a character and not the screenplay itself. Hell, she can even kiss Finn if that’s what the screen-writers want and I wouldn’t complain.

And there we have it - that is as much as I am prepared to dump on The Last Jedi. Although I sincerely believe these few changes could transform The Last Jedi into a pretty-much flawless film, we all have to remember that the film has already been released and established in the canon, and barring a George Lucas-esque rework, it will remain that way. This is Rian Johnson’s film, through and through, and in my humble opinion it is a masterpiece. It is much, much easier to come up with a couple fix-all solutions after the fact (and even easier 8 months after) than to write an entire script from scratch.

That being said, please hire me Disney 😊

Those going out into the community to preach the Good News, as well as those met in the community are either introverts or extroverts or somewhere in between. Most dictionaries tend to define the introvert with shyness or antisocial, and this just is not the case. An extroverted person tends to be outspoken, straight, and nonstop in their speaking, as well as talking as their thoughts poor through their mind. They also tend to see the bigger picture, often relying on figures of speech and comparisons to convey what they mean. On the other hand, an introverted person tends to keep his thoughts to himself, until he is sure of what he wants to say, and how he wants to say it. He also tends to look at the particulars and fine points of the matter before making a decision.

Therefore, you may be an extrovert who has to communicate with introverts on occasion in your community. Conversely, you may be an introvert who has to communicate with extroverts on occasion in your community. This may be part of the reason as to why you feel very comfortable at times and uncomfortable at other times. Having a better understanding of introvert and extrovert personalities will lead to better communication that is far more successful.

Not to mention, with both people trying to witness to one person, it can get overwhelming even for the extroverted person. Additionally, if you are asking questions of an introverted person, do not make it a series; try to keep it to one question at a time, giving them time to respond. Finally, try not to speak too fast, as extroverted persons tend to be rapid-paced speakers.

They can be overcome by too much activity from large social gatherings and may seek out a corner to escape the pressure. Rather, it should just be viewed as the introvert prefers alone time, individual activities, from which they get their energy, while the shy person (who may even be extroverted by nature), will avoid groups of people out of fear.

The ambivert is “a personality pattern that has characteristics of both introversion and extroversion.”[3] Most have not heard of this person, and have just viewed people as being either introverted or extroverted. Of course, you have people on the extreme ends of either the introverted or extroverted or everywhere in between.

Psychology identifies the Big Five personality traits, used to describe the human personality. How much stock we can put in any one of them can be debated. However, I will list the five here so you can appreciate that we all possess different personalities, and it would be overly critical to be judgmental of others, who may possess a different personality than your own, and which may grate against yours. Obviously, we all are different, Therefore, while personalities are genetic, they are learned as well. Can you imagine an introverted person growing up in a violent inner-city neighborhood, with a father that beats his mother, and a mother that physically and verbally abuses the children as a result?

Being genetically bent in one personality direction, heightened or dulled by one’s environment does not excuse a neurotic personality, someone who is prone to such feelings as anxiety, anger, envy, guilt, and depressed mood, to then be excused for outbursts of anger, saying, “It is just who he is.” It just means that he needs self-control through cognitive therapy, as well as work and application of Scripture. While our genes may have some role in our personality traits, our Christian faith, and Holy Spirit can determine where we end up.

As we saw in the above, each of us has different personalities, which would mean that we also communicate differently. Because of this, misunderstandings can arise, even frustration. Certainly, some of our personality is genetically predisposed, but our socialization (learned behaviors) plays a major role. However, now that we are Christians, looking to engage in the evangelism of others, this means that we need to alter our communication skills because we are going to engage hundreds, if not thousands throughout our life as a Christian. The new Christian person that we became (Eph. 4:22-24), includes taking on a different communication style. Yes, we need to become better, more effective in our communication, if our evangelism will be successful.
