Liiarken Amarius
Now we get into the list of “Fault Concepts”. These were character ideas I had which didn’t quite work. They were either overly complicated, too dark and edgy, poorly thought out, over the top, or simply didn’t work out in practice the way they did in my head. Better characters for a short story than a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Starting it off is Liiarken Amarius.
Fighter (Eldritch Knight) - Outlander - Shifter (Beasthide) - Neutral/Good - Liiarken Amarius/Li Ar-Ken.
Notes:
Beasthide-type Shifter, form of a Wolverine.
Based on a previous RPC named Liiarken, was from a small island village, and was afflicted with uncontrolled Lycanthrope, would be hero attempting to redeem himself for the damage he'd caused in his other form.
Wielded a massive greatsword.
Backstory Concept: This version of Liiarken/Li Ar-Ken, hails from a small secluded village either on an island or in the mountains, populated entirely by Shifters and those previously afflicted with Lycanthrope or a similar curse. The village was founded as a place for such people to retreat from the rest of the world, come to grips with what they are or were, and perhaps find peace. Appearance: 5′5. Weight unknown. Red hair, yellow eyes. White gloves and boots, long coat that is red and white (different shade than his hair). Pants black. Wields a Greatsword. Based on entirely anime concept design from original RP.

just noticed that in the new neverafter episode in addition to adding 2 druid levels Yflas race/species actually changes!! In her og stat card it says that she’s a shifter reskin but the new card says she’s a beasthide reskin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just really love how the mechanics are playing with this multiverse story and how the characters we know can drastically change from world to world. Really makes the stakes higher knowing that BIG pieces of character background and stats can be altered as the characters are resurrected!

as ripe as ylfa's new druid levels are for meme potential i have to say that i don't think emily multiclassed primarily for spells this time.
if she were, she likely could've taken just one level of druid, and/or swapped her dex and wis scores to boost her spellcasting ability.
instead, she kept her scores the same and picked up two levels of druid to get wild shape, which synergises really well with her beasthide shifter trait and her rage. level 2 is also when druids pick their circle, and i'd be willing to bet that ylfa is a circle of the moon druid (can wild shape into stronger beasts, can burn spell slots to recover health).
so essentially by taking these levels of druid emily has made an Even Beefier weird little wolf girl and i love her for it

Duuuuude you canNOT make me think about a dsmp dnd au im never going to get anything done now.
Consider though: Tubbo as an artificer? And wilbur with the folk hero background? Also, Wilbur as a college of eloquence bard is VERY well fitting, like it's probably my favorite. However, alternatively, he could be college of whispers, maybe--specifically because of the "Words of Terror" feature: "At 3rd level, you learn to infuse innocent-seeming words with an insidious magic that can inspire terror." emphasis on innocent-seeming. idk it doesnt work nearly as well but I've not seen anyone bring it up as an option.
ALSO (and this is my best idea so far) maybe you already said this one, but Techno as a shifter fits reallly well to me. Specifically a beasthide shifter, but that's probably a given. Of course, him being a normal-ass human is fun as well.
Additionally, these don't really fit the canon narrative but would be fun for a fic, maybe, or a fully character based and not narrative based au--Wilbur as an Enchantment Wizard and Tommy as a Wild Magic Sorcerer. Individually i think these work really well for their characters, and together they contrast very well.
I'll probably be back with more ideas once i refresh myself a little on the character species/classes lol
Tumblr media
Okkkk so much to discuss!!
First of all: Tubbo as an artificer immediately popped into my mind (intelligence based! Gadgets!) but my resident tubbling friend advocated for wizard because what’s more nuke-like in a fantasy setting than a 9th level wizard spell? (Meteor swarm, anyone?) But another friend also threw down ranger because of the dreamon hunter bit and butcher army. I tend to lean c!Tubbo war mage or evoker and q!Tubbo artificer, personally.
Secondly: ooooh shifter techno is such a good idea!! I had discussed orc, half orc, or bugbear with a friend but overlooked shifter! Could be really really cool! I’ll look at those stats soon :P
Thirdly: yes folk hero Wilbur!! And hear me out… what if Wilbur was college of eloquence and Quackity was college of whispers? 👀 (my other ideas for quackity rn are inquisitor rogue or mastermind rogue. Which if ppl preferred, maybe I’d push Wilbur to whispers haha!)
I swear the possibilities are endless and like so many fit so well!!

and we're back with another edition of thisisnotthenerd's d20 stats. this time we're talking character races. mechanically. they are not all italian.
Tumblr media
most common character races
a couple of things:
the chart displays the character races as they present within their individual seasons. this is not always reflective of their mechanical races, which is what i'm using to evaluate. if you go into the spreadsheet and look at the notes, you'll see the mechanical race for each character.
some characters are not counted because they do not have an accurate equivalent, e.g. the creepy co-eds and the prefrontal p.i.s. the magical misfits are because i don't know that you can get more variant human than what they have going on.
obviously there are repeats in the chart. those are not counted in the totals.
at the top, as most would expect from d20, is variant human, with 40 characters. this tracks for several reasons; it's a fairly solid race that allows you to start with a feat and tool proficiencies and focuses asis rather than spreading them around. the other reason is that it's used as the base for most characters in most seasons that don't fit the dnd standard races, i.e. tiny heist, a crown of candy, mice & murder, and the ravening war.
next up is actually harengon with 6, though it might not look like it from the chart. that's because all of the stoats from burrow's end are using harengon stats with the addition of at will primal savagery and claw/bite attacks. it's a solid build that fits well for this season, but makes the rabbit comments from the top of the season funnier.
next up is half-elves, with 4 characters: fabian seacaster, danielle barkstock, misty moore, and agnes. mechanically, those marked as faeries are half-elves. they are marked as faerie to distinguish them from fairies, who are also on this list a little later on.
in fourth place is tieflings, with 3 characters: fig faeth, magfelda/maggie, and gertrude. two fo them sit in the same seat in back to back seasons. tied with them are half-orcs: gorgug thistlespring, katja cleaver, and sokhbarr, who is another reskin, much like the faerie characters.
tied for fifth with two each are: bugbear (marcid the typhoon & k.p. hob), drow (lilith (as a reskin) & andhera), changeling (rick diggins & binx choppley), high elf (adaine abernant & efink murderdeath), kalashtar (pete conlan & riva), kenku (chirp & squak), ratfolk [different types] (kugrash & jack brakkow), vampire (squing & may wong), and warforged (car-go jones & pinocchio)
and with one each we have:
aarakocra: sunny biscotto
aasimar: barbarella sarsaparilla gainglynn
android [ryn]: sundry sidney
cerebroslug: skip/valdrinor
clone soldier [shistavanen]: big barry syx
dwarf: ostentatia wallace
fairy: twyla
genasi [water]: sam nightingale
gnome [forest]: cheese
goblin: riz gukgak
halfling [lightfoot]: penny luckstone
hobgoblin [frog-man reskin]: gerard of greenleigh
hollow one: leiland
merfolk: myrtle the bitch
orc: princess foehammer
owlbear: delloso de la rue
satyr: zelda donovan
shifter [beasthide]: ylfa snorgelsson
tabaxi: puss in boots/pib
triton: troyánn
there were a total of 34 pc races used over the course of dimension 20.
now for the fun part, beyond the numbers:
commentary
a lot of this won't make sense without the notes. if you're interested in reading through this, i'd suggest at least a cursory look.
most of the pc races used on dimension 20 do actually have a standardized background (or two or more) in dnd. generally they stick to the same variants most of the time, usually the ones that grant the best versions of racial abilities. even the reskins have a solid background: kashai->half-orc, faerie->half-elf, the usage of kalashtar stats for pete, frogman->hobgoblin, cat->tabaxi, puppet->warforged, rick diggins as a changeling clicko man. they make sense and make sure that characters have a balance of racial traits.
however there are a few that don't have a standard. some of them only show up in the bestiaries. some are straight up homebrewed or borrowed from 'unofficial' sources. i pieced them together based on wiki info and what i could find on each of these.
drider: from what i found, drider isn't currently playable. i suspect they combined drider traits from the bestiaries and drow/dark elf stats to make lilith. it gives her a bunch of really cool abilities.
ratfolk: this one was tough, because murph and matt used different sources to make their rat-men. murph's likely comes from kobold press, wherein ratfolk are small, with 25 ft of movement, rodent empathy, darkvision, and poison resistance. hell, kug might still be a reflavored dwarf. i don't think so, because he doesn't use any of the racial abilities that would make him a dwarf as opposed to ratfolk, but who knows. matt's comes from adamant entertainment's ratkin, whose ratfolk are medium, humanoid rats, with 30 ft of movement, low light vision, immunity to disease, and proficiency with bite attacks. matt specifically references ratkin during pirates of leviathan, so i'm fairly confident that that's what jack is.
cyborg: gunnie is a base human, but has a lot of cybernetic replacements and so has a few extras that come with it. he gets an additional +1 to any skill, at the expense of augmentation side effects i.e. vulnerability to ion damage. this is a combination of sw 5e's cybernetic augmentation rules with the sw 5e human.
cerebroslug: norman is a base human in sw 5e. that part is easy. i'm pretty sure that cerebroslugs were a homebrew creation based on existing starstruck lore and zac's character pitch. i had to go back and watch a few episodes of starstruck to figure out what he's using, because it sure as hell is not on the wiki. body thief is the one named ability that i can recall. if a creature is incapacitated, the cerebroslug can enter its body start running it. if not incapacitated, the cerebroslug cannot attempt to overpower their vessel. other racial traits allow the cerebroslug to a) retain it's own mental statistics while using the vessel's physical statistics, b) run the body by using piloting statistics, e.g. making piloting checks to run the body upon waking. with enough successes, they stop being required. cerebroslugs are sensitive to cold--they are ejected from their vessel if 20 points of cold damage are dealt to them. they must succeed on a dc 15 con saving throw or be paralyzed upon ejection. i really hope this is actually written down somewhere and isn't just me hallucinating after hours of rewatching starstruck.
owlbear: this was simpler: rue is an awakened owlbear as opposed to a standard owlbear. the adaptations: innate savagery. ancestric physiology, natural instincts, and clumsy are the noted racial traits.
stoat: they're actually harengons as noted previously. they also have the cantrip primal savagery that they can cast at will in order to up the damage of their claw/bite attacks. these stoats are literally built different.
and that's all! let me know if there's something i missed; i'd love to hear it. the spreadsheet is open to perusal.

My brain rot combines everything i touch so uhhhh dark rise dnd au
Will is a 'human' Bard Sorcerer multiclass. He is Collage of Whispers Bard, and Shadows Sorcerer and he tells people he is only a Collage of Eloquence Bard. Will isn't overly athletic but he is quick and dexterous and very charismatic so the charisma classes suit him well imo, especially as Bard focuses on both rallying allies and crowd control.
James is a High Elf Sorcerer, Aberrant Mind. You could also give him a couple levels in Fighter considering his Steward Background but since he rarely uses his Steward training in the books, we'll just go with Sorc. Again, a charisma build suits James wonderfully.
Violet I think would be mechanically a Leonin but visually human; I was also considering a Beasthide Shifter but I think the Leonin suits better. She would be a Totem Warrior Barbarian with the Bear stats reskinned as a lion. You'd want to do some homebrew to make her shield into a weapon, or just give her some form of bludgeoning weapon and flavour it so her shield functions as both a shield and the weapon. Overall she is a Strength and Con build, an absolute tank.
Now the Stewards I see as a Paladin order but I think taking your whites would be the equivalent of taking your oath, so Cyrpian would be a Half Elf Champion Fighter. He would have intended to multiclass into Paladin. He might also suit Battle Master but I think the overall concept of Champion Fighter, trained perfection and control, suits Cyprian. Despite aiming to be Paladin, he would have shitty Charisma. I love Cyprian.
(Justice would have been a Half Elf Champion Fighter/Oath of the Ancients Paladin)
Kathrine and Elizabeth would be functionally Aasimar but neither would have a class. They'd probably suit Scourge Aasimar since Radiant Consumption most reflects the power of the Lady
And Visander would have been High Elf Oath of Devotion Paladin, and Battle Master Fighter but as of his death has changed oaths and now exists in Kathrine's body so he is an Aasimar Oath of Vengeance Paladin, Battle Master Fighter. Though you could also definitely argue Cavalier Fighter as well.
Sarcean, Anharion and the Lady I'm a lot less sure about since we don't know their vibes super well but Sarcean still feels like a Shadow Sorcerer, but also probably a Necromancer Wizard. Anharion as the Betrayer has very Oathbreaker Paladin energy, and was probably formally Oath of Devotion like Visander. The Lady probably best suits Divine Soul Sorcerer, which is a nice fit with Sarcean and would be part of why her descendants are aasimar.

She has her hair in a long mohawk, also known as a deathhawk. Her hair is dyed black with dark brown roots. She has a nose piercing and an eyebrow piercing, and she is wearing dark makeup. She has freckles and darker spots on her cheekbones, sides of her head, and shoulders, reminiscent of a hyena’s coloration. She also has sparse fur on her chin, sideburns, and the tips of her pointed ears. Only her skin and hair is in color, with her clothing only outlined. End description.]

How to Make Rendog in DnD
I’ll go level by level and explain the reasoning behind my decisions and how I think it fits them in character. This build assumes starting at level 8 but includes notes on differences if you start at level 1 and progress to 8. This is not intended as a guide on how to play dnd, just how to build this character. I also don't explain every feature, but I may briefly touch on it and explain my reasoning for taking it.
Tumblr media
Class: Barbarian 5 (Path of the Beast)/Bard 3 (College of Swords)
Race: Shifter (closest to an official dog race in 5e)
Base Ability Scores:
Str 15 (+2) + 1 from race = 16 (+3)
Dex 10 (+0)
Con 14 (+2) +2 from race = 16 (+3)
Int 8 (-1)
Wis 10 (+0)
Cha 14 (+2)
Background: Folk Hero
Ren is a strong player with a good track record when it comes to pvp in the life series. What he lacks in game knowledge he makes up for with pure charisma, being able to swing many people to his side (renpire, shadow alliance). Depending on how you look at it, he really is a hero to some (especially martyn) and knows how to make a good show.
Before we get into the class features, here’s the race and background ones.
Shifter:
Bestial Instincts: Skill proficiency. Choose Athletics.
Darkvision 60ft.
Shifting: Become more beast-like as a bonus action and gain temp HP. Become doggier.
Shifter type: choose Swiftstride to be fast, but if you want tankiness then Beasthide is also a good option. Barbarians often struggle with movement speed which is the main reason for choosing Swiftstride.
Folk Hero Background:
Skill Proficiencies: Animal Handling, Survival
Tool Proficiencies: Any Artisan’s tools, land vehicles.
Rustic Hospitality: Common people like you and will help you.
Shifters get to choose their animal ancestry and traits, so you can choose to be a dog. Longtooth is usually the default option for dog (the other options are associated with other animals) but the feature is quite useless in this build, which is why we pick one of the other ones.
Tumblr media
Time for class levels! At 1st lvl, we start with barbarian, which grants us:
Proficiency in Light and medium armour, shields
Proficiency in simple and martial weapons
Proficiency in Strength and Constitution saving throws.
Skill proficiencies: choose Intimidation and Perception
Rage: Core barbarian feature. Hit harder and soak more hits. Keep in mind you cant use spells while raging, which will matter after multiclassing.
Unarmored Defense: Add your Con to your AC if you have no armour. Goes well with being a bard…
The red king Ren was very vicious kind of king who goes to war leading his troops rather than hiding in the backline. Barbarian is a perfect class for Ren who is both very good at and goes unga bunga on occasion. Keep in mind both Shifting and Raging are bonus actions, so you have to use them on different turns. The temp HP gets doubled value vs weapon damage if you’re raging because of resistance, so it might be usually better to rage first but it also depends.
Tumblr media
At 2nd lvl, we continue with barbarian and will do so up to lvl 5.
Danger Sense: Advantage on dex saves against things you can see. Very useful for avoiding traps.
Reckless Attack: Advantage on your attacks is always good to have if you don’t mind taking more hits.
These features fit Ren perfectly too since he is pretty good at surviving and avoiding traps (unless a stalactite is involved) and in combat he can go pretty wild.
At 3rd lvl, we get:
Subclass: Path of the Beast
Path of the Beast gives:
Form of the Beast: When you Rage, you get an extra bestial trait to be even more dog-like. Bite gives you healing at low hp, claw gives you an extra attack and tail gives you extra ac. All fairly useful in different situations.
Now Ren becomes even more doggy. I always envisioned Ren being more of an axe-wielding barbarian, but these are still good to have. Keep in mind you choose the trait when you rage and can’t change it until a new rage, so choose the right one for the situation (low hp? Bite for healing. Two claw attacks actually deals more damage than the axe because you add your strength mod twice. Tail is good for avoiding hits or hitting something barely out of reach.)
At 4th lvl, we get:
Ability Score Improvement OR Feat: Take the Ability Score improvement and bump your Strength up to 18 (+4).
The extra strength helps everywhere as a barbarian.
At 5th lvl, we get:
Extra Attack (more damage! Woo!)
Fast Movement: an extra 10 ft. of move speed if you aren’t wearing heavy armour which you can’t really use as a barbarian anyway.
If you took Swiftstrider at the start, you’ll now have a whopping 50 ft. of walking speed, which is pretty dang fast. You’ll be able to run across deserts in no time.
Tumblr media
At 6th lvl, we begin multiclassing with a level in bard, which grants us:
Musical Instrument Proficiency: Choose a Horn.
Skill Proficiency: Choose Persuasion
Bardic Inspiration: Increase chances of success. Not a spell, so you can use it during rage.
Two Cantrips: Choose Message (whisper chat msgs) and Minor Illusion (fun spell)
Four 1st lvl spells: Speak with Animals, Identify, Charm Person and Color Spray.
Now we get to the more… seductive side of Ren. Ren’s a really fun person but is also known to be a little on the less PG side of things if you know what I’m saying (not to mention the fact that as a barbarian with unarmored defense… fully exposed while being beheaded). I also tried to pick spells that are more useful outside of combat since he can’t cast spells while raging.
At 7th lvl, we take a second level of Bard, which grants us:
Jack of All Trades: Half-proficiency in all ability checks is good.
Song of Rest: Listen to Ren sing Britney during a short rest and heal up extra good.
One more spell: Command (Kneel before your king!)
Jack of All Trades will make up for some of Ren’s poorer stat checks now.
At 8th lvl, we take a third level of Bard, which grants us:
Expertise in Two Skills: Choose Persuasion (man literally persuaded people to go to war) and Athletics (good in general for strength builds).
2nd lvl spells: See Invisibility (doesn’t use concentration)
Subclass: College of Swords
College of Swords grants us:
Bonus Proficiencies: Medium Armor and Scimitars. Redundant because we get that from Barbarian.
Fighting Style: Choose Dueling and use a battle axe with a shield.
Blade Flourish: Even more movement speed when you attack, and the flourish options are all useful on top of the extra damage they provide (more ac, knockback and aoe damage). The go-to would probably be Defensive Flourish to stack with your Tail. If you chose Beasthide Shifter, your AC will go even higher.
Flourishes are especially useful because they aren’t spells and they don’t take any action economy. This is a surprisingly good synergy between a barbarian and a bard multiclass, especially since you get access to a fighting style with this subclass for some extra damage consistency.
Tumblr media
Summary:
Final Stats:
Str 18 (+4)
Dex 10 (+0)
Con 16 (+3)
Int 8 (-1)
Wis 10 (+0)
Cha 14 (+2)
Two Attacks
Battle axe attack: +4 (str) +3 (prof. bonus) = +7 to hit, 1d8 + 4 + 2 (dueling) slashing dmg.
Three Bardic Inspirations
Cantrips: Message, Minor Illusion
1st lvl spells: Speak with Animals, Identify, Color Spray, Charm Person, Command
2nd lvl spells: See Invisibility
In summary, lots of combat power (as is fitting for the Red King himself) and a decent amount of Bard utility. A similar build to Scar’s, though more towards the combat end of the spectrum.
And that’s it for Ren! I think I managed to capture a bit of his savagery but also his fun and charming side into this build. He’s built for combat but he’s also quite good in social situations and he’s gonna be a tough nut to crack!
