30 Fun Dog Facts
Tumblr media
1. The Labrador Retriever has been on the AKC’s top 10 most popular breeds list for longer than any other breed.
2. A dog’s nose print is unique, much like a person’s fingerprint.
3. Forty-five percent of U.S. dogs sleep in their owner’s beds.
4. Speaking of sleeping … all dogs dream, but puppies and senior dogs dream more frequently than adult dogs.
5. Seventy percent of people sign their dog’s name on their holiday cards.
6. A dog’s sense of smell is legendary, but did you know that their nose has as many as 300 million receptors? In comparison, a human nose has about 5 million.
Tumblr media
7. Rin Tin Tin, the famous German Shepherd Dog, was nominated for an Academy Award.
8. Dogs’ noses can sense heat and thermal radiation, which explains why blind or deaf dogs can still hunt.
9. The French Bulldog was first named the most popular breed in 2022.
10. The name Collie means “black.” (Collies once tended black-faced sheep.)
11. Yawning is contagious — even for dogs. Research shows that the sound of a human yawn can trigger one from your dog. And it’s four times as likely to happen when it’s the yawn of a person your pet knows.
Tumblr media
12. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is the only breed named for a fictional person, a character in the novel “Guy Mannering” by Sir Walter Scott.
13. Dogs curl up in a ball when sleeping to protect their organs — a holdover from their days in the wild, when they were vulnerable to predator attacks.
14. The Basenji is not technically “barkless,” as many people think. They can yodel.
Tumblr media
15. The Australian Shepherd is not actually from Australia. In fact, they are an American breed.
16. … And the Labrador Retriever is originally from Newfoundland.
17. Human blood pressure goes down when petting a dog. And so does the dog’s.
18. There are over 75 million pet dogs in the U.S. — more than in any other country.
19. A person who hunts with a Beagle is known as a “Beagler.”
20. Dogs are not color-blind. They can see blue and yellow.
21. All puppies are born deaf.
Tumblr media
22. Dalmatians are born completely white. They develop their spots as they get older.
23. Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds. We humans have between 2,000 and 10,000.
24. When dogs kick backward after they go to the bathroom, it’s not to cover it up, but to mark their territory, using the scent glands in their feet.
25. A study shows that dogs are among a small group of animals who show voluntary unselfish kindness towards others without any reward.
Tumblr media
26. The Norwegian Lundehund is the only dog breed created for the job of puffin hunting.
27. Greyhounds can beat cheetahs in a race. While cheetahs can run twice as fast as Greyhounds, they can only maintain that 70 mph speed for about thirty seconds. A Greyhound can maintain a 35 mph speed for about seven miles. The cheetah may start out first, but the Greyhound would soon overtake them.
28. The Bloodhound’s sense of smell is so accurate that the results of its tracking can be used as evidence in a court of law.
Tumblr media
29. According to Guinness World Records, a Great Dane named Zeus is the world’s tallest male dog. Zeus is 3 feet, 5.18 inches tall.
Tumblr media
30. What about the shortest dog? According to Guinness World Records, the shortest dog ever recorded was Pearl the Chihuahua. She measures 3.59 inches tall.

losing it over the dream scene from the lays
'Tis told that Turin then turned him back and fared to Flinding, and flung him down to sleep soundless till the sun mounted to the high heavens and hasted westward. A vision he viewed in the vast spaces of slumber roving: it seemed he roamed up the bleak boulders of a bare hillside to a cup outcarven in a cruel hollow, whose broken brink bushes limb-wracked by the North-wind's knife in knotted anguish did fringe forbidding. There black unfriendly was a dark thicket, a dell of thorn-trees with yews mingled that the years had fretted. The leafless limbs they lifted hopeless were blotched and blackened, barkless, naked, a lifeless remnant of the levin's flame, charred chill fingers changeless pointing to the cold twilight.. There called he longing: 'O Beleg, my brother, O Beleg, tell me where is buried thy body in these bitter regions? ' -- and the echoes always him answered 'Beleg'; yet a veiled voice vague and distant he caught that called like a cry at night o'er the sea's silence: 'Seek no longer. My bow is rotten in the barrow ruinous; my grove is burned by grim lightning; here dread dwelleth, none dare profane this angry earth, Orc nor goblin; none gain the gate of the gloomy forest by this perilous path; pass they may not, yet my life has winged to the long waiting in the halls of the Moon o'er the hills of the sea. Courage be thy comfort, comrade lonely! '

[3:00 am] its the same dream, night after night. the slithering of the vines against every surface, crawling up the trunks of trees and leaving barkless streaks in their wake. its so real. you can smell the thick, putrid air and feel the film it leaves on your skin. even more so, you can feel the sizzling of your flesh as the vine wraps around your ankle. as it pulls you to the ground, it tightens around your leg and practically dissolves your skin beneath it. you open your mouth to scream, call out for your friends walking ahead of you, but no words come out, only a slimy clump spews from your lips- a slug. a parasite.
the puddles of black sludge turn to sweaty palms, and the vine on your ankle is really just the loose sheet wrapped around you at the end of the bed. you wake up gasping and grappling at the mattress beneath you, accidentally digging your fingers into eddie's shoulder.
"woah, woah, hey," he jolts awake, immediately sitting up and pulling you into his lap, your back against his chest as he envelops you in his arms, "it was just a bad dream. a no good very bad dream."
"its the same one, eds," you sigh a shaky breath against his arm. youre not even sure if he knows how much the physical contact helps ground you or if its pure instinct for him to just have you as close to him as possible.
"well, hey," he mumbles against your cheek, pressing a gentle kiss to the flushed skin, "youre here with me, now, and im not gonna let anything happen to you. i just have one quick question."
you hum quizzically, unsure if you even want to know.
"does my hair look alright- in the dream, i mean."

Crew of light as dogs...
Based on this post. Exactly what it sounds like. Some fluff to aid you all in getting through the Droughtula.
I would like to thank @re-dracula for being absolutely brilliant and thank @victoriantheorist14, @see-arcane, @marghen and @garnetsfists for their service to the Dracula (1897) fandom at this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would also like to highlight my friends, @zoophagist, @wcstenra, @carpathianprince @gingerhastoomanyobsessions @the-brat-prince-1760 and @withinycu, we shall survive the droughtula. 💞
Disclaimer: contains vague spoilers for the book Dracula (1897). Proceed no further baby bats. 🦇
Tumblr media
1. Mina Murray/Mina Harker - beagle. - the most intelligent character in the novel, other than Jonathan the primary hunter of Dracula. Beagles are known well for their intelligence and ability to hunt.
2. Jonathan Harker - Labrador retriever. - A sporting and family dog, thoroughly charming and intelligent but understated to a point. Just like our dear friend Jonathan. Can spot red flags from a good distance, they however, can’t always act to protect themselves.
3. Lucy Westenra - Yorkshire terrier - charming, intelligent, earnest, would not deliberately hurt anyone and amiable. Just like our ingenue, Lucy.
4. Van Helsing - Dutch Shepard - a herding dog, somewhat parental, Dutch, clever and known to read signs and cues very well.
5. Arthur Holmwood - papillon - charming, upper class, ridiculously cute, and known for their good hair and most thorough innocence and good intentions.
6. Quincey Morris - German Shepard - a ranch dog, strong, steady, versatile, hard working, earnest and loyal to the end, just like our American cowboy.
7. John/Jack Seward - Affenpinscher - a German dog originally bred to kill rats, awkward looking, small, and hard to find in the 21st century. Some may consider them to off putting but if you utilized correctly a useful set of paws, or hands to have on one’s team.
8. Not technically in the polycule but he gets love here.
R. M Renfield - Basenji - an usual dog, known for being “barkless” or “voiceless” in dog terms, often wrongly perceived as lacking substantial will or helpless. This is in fact, untrue, rather than silent this dog “yodels” “sings” and “sirens.” Useful as hunting dogs as Renfield is, despite circumstances useful to our vampire hunting polycule/crew. Basenji often alert their owners of danger and send signals, albeit in no traditional way. What Basenji sound like.

propaganda of my special boy filip for @irldogbracket !!!! filip is the most unique dog ive ever had, he has so much character and spunk while also being incredibly sweet and smart. he loves my mom and i to pieces and whenever we leave to go anywhere he starts wailing and howling as if the world is ending. he has a very special bark, one of his breeds is the basenji which is considered a barkless dog, so although he can bark (since hes also a terrier and aus shepherd) most of his noises are silly chortles and he loves to go AWOOOOWOWOOOO. he loves running around very fast and pretending to be a guard dog when he sees deer or squirrels. hes best friends with my cat willie and they love to sit and lay and play together. he loves hugs and will walk up to me/lean towards me if im sitting next to him asking for them and loves to tuck his head under my chin while i hug him. he also loves to pick up trash when we go for walks and will carry any litter hes found in his mouth until we get home and hes always very proud of finding something to recycle. hes my special boy please vote for him when his bracket comes!!

Well what dog breeds would Oscar and John be?
ok my oscar criteria was. fancy/demanding grooming needs, high energy, needs mental stimulation, independent/training-resistant. ideally neither plays well nor poorly with others. ideally smaller but not a Small dog. originally i was thinking a herding dog because they kinda wanna control everything around them, you know? however none of them fit quite right like something was always missing. but then i found this guy who is a hound:
Tumblr media
here is what the american kennel club has to say:
The Basenji, Africa's 'Barkless Dog,' is a compact, sweet-faced hunter of intelligence and poise. They are unique and beguiling pets, best for owners who can meet their exercise needs and the challenge of training this catlike canine. Basenjis are small, graceful hounds standing 16 or 17 inches at the shoulder. They are recognizable by their glistening short coat, tightly curled tail, and wrinkled forehead and expressive almond-shaped eyes that convey a variety of subtle, humanlike emotions. Basenjis are a lovely sight at a standstill but more impressive yet at a fast trot, when they exhibit the long, smooth strides of a mini-racehorse. And yes, it's true, they don't bark, but they make their feelings known with an odd sound described as something between a chortle and a yodel. Basenjis are fastidious and will groom themselves like cats. This has been called a 'cult breed': small in numbers, but those lucky enough to own one do so with singular devotion.
perfect oscar dog. 10/10 no notes
for john. criteria are lovable/family oriented, good with people but not necessarily other dogs and children (jealousy!). protective but not aggressive. also goal oriented. bigger than whatever the oscar dog is obviously. athletic but not necessarily high energy. trainable but not necessarily adaptable. best place to start looking was retrievers & working dogs
knocked out goldens quickly because they're too friendly. more of a larry type. same with labs.
looked at a bunch across groups. ultimately, less certain here but i landed on two:
curly-coated retriever
Tumblr media
The Curly-Coated Retriever, among the oldest of the retriever breeds, is a famously versatile gundog and peerless swimmer. Poised, proud, and wickedly smart, the Curly is a thinking person's retriever who will never quit before you do. The Curly-Coated Retriever's tight, crisp curls of either black or liver serve as waterproof and thorn-resistant all-weather gear for work in thick bramble and icy lakes. The Curly is a big, durable gun dog, but more elegant and graceful than other retrievers. Another trait that sets Curlies apart from the usual retriever is a tapered, wedge-shaped head. Like Labradors and Goldens, Curlies are affectionate and gentle, but they are a bit more independent and less needy. Playful and mischievous with loved ones, Curlies can be aloof with strangers. This wariness makes them more discerning watchdogs than other, more gregarious retrievers. These tireless dogs need lots of outdoor exercise. Bored, underemployed Curlies are a handful.
chesapeake bay retriever:
Tumblr media
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, peerless duck dog of the Mid-Atlantic, is an American original who embodies the classic traits of a good retriever: loyal, upbeat, affectionate, and tireless. The Chessie is famous for his waterproof coat. Chessies are strong, powerfully built gundogs standing anywhere from 21 to 26 inches at the shoulder. A male can weigh up to 80 pounds. The distinctive breed trait is a wavy coat that is oily to the touch. Chessies are solid-colored, either chocolatey brown, sedge, or deadgrass, with keen yellow-amber eyes that nicely complement the coat. Chessies are more emotionally complex than the usual gundog. Chessies take to training, but they have a mind of their own and can tenaciously pursue their own path. They are protective of their humans and polite, but not overtly friendly, to strangers. Chessies make excellent watchdogs and are versatile athletes. A well-socialized Chessie is a confident companion and world-class hunting buddy.
"emotionally complex" and all american.
not sure john is easily encapsulated in a dog breed though.

Okay but also Bartholomew would be a basenji I'm thinking now. It's a barkless dog breed because it makes other sounds and I think that suits Bartholomew perfectly.

We find shelter in my apartment, compacted by the humidity. His freckled shoulders, his arms, his cheeks. They’re all stained a deep peach color from the sun’s unforgiving heat. I can feel the warmth his skin retains as I gently place my hand on his jaw. He does not flinch, but I can feel by the strain of his muscles, the ever so slight tightening of his shirt, that he is in pain. As we sit on my bed, he removes my shirt first, trying hard to not touch my skin. I do the same for him and feel that same tension in his shoulders. He reaches for the aloe, something we’ve heard works for stuff like this. Before I can take the bottle from his hands, he grabs my long hair off my back and moves it in front of my shoulder. He takes his hands, damp now from the lotion, and gently grazes my stinging back. He massages instant relief into my body with his delicate fingers. Though he is in more pain, he takes the time to take care of me first. I ponder his sweetness and wonder if it could give me a cavity.
The pain in tandem with the intimacy is what I think it means to be human. I could not have had one without the other; they exist only in combination. Suffering is replaced by nurturing, and it will succeed thereafter as well.
I turn around in order for him to massage aloe vera into my chest. His eyes glaze over me, taking everything in. In that moment, I felt vulnerable. Raw. I was a barkless tree facing the relentlessness of the elements. He sets his hands down like a drizzle of rain. His fingers firmly traipse over all my damaged skin. I can feel the strength of his palms as I look into his blue eyes. They’re not deep like the ocean nor clear as glass. Just human. Completely and unforgivingly human. I wouldn’t have guessed he was ever anything else.
His hands ruminate their way from my chest to my shoulders to my neck. I find it strange how vulnerable the neck is in human beings, but the thought doesn’t even seem to cross his mind. He is as tender to this part of me as he is to the rest. I wonder if this is something he learned from being a machine or from not. If living beings all had this kind of mercy implanted in them.
-excerpt from a story about two robots learning what it's like to be human
