like i said, since this is now a 100% narnia-analysis blog, the best narnposts are the "why would you ask us, a narnia blog, this question" and "draw my fursona"

big tw but I’ve been thinking about Tolkien’s portrayal of suicide in regards to his religious teachings and how he portrays Túrin’s death as someone to be mourned rather than scorned. in the middle ages (and sometimes even today) deaths by suicide have been denied burial in christian cemeteries, yet Túrin’s grave is hallowed to survive the sinking of Beleriand

Mablung is interesting because of how many major events from the first age he’s been through. the Mereth Aderthad where the Noldor made their first formal alliance with the Sindar, Beren and Lúthien’s hunt for Carcharoth, the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the beginning and end of Túrin’s curse shenanigans, and the beginning of the fall of Doriath. he’s always just kinda there in the background
what I’m saying is he’s the Forrest Gump of Beleriand

like yeah Túrin’s death is super tragic and all but I’d be lying if I said the timing of the scene wasn’t borderline comedic from Mablung’s pov like
Mablung: oh look it’s Túrin! haven’t seen him in a while, I’ll stop by and say hi
Túrin: I Am Going To Kill Myself
Mablung: … was it something I said?

Tall and strong she seemed; for of great stature were those of Hador's house, and thus clad in Elvish raiment she matched well with the guards, being smaller only than the greatest among them.
do you ever think about the fact that Niënor is taller than the average male elf

Túrin’s biggest character flaw is how he thinks heroism is all about stabbing the baddies and the actual personal safety of the people he needs to protect is almost an afterthought. dude thought he knew more about Aerin’s own lived experiences than Aerin herself because he thinks with his sword first

you know how in the lay Túrin and Beleg have that moment where they declare their wedding vows an oath of loyalty for their gang of warriors and they invoke the oath of Feanor? Nienor needs an unhinged Feanorian coded moment too

thinking about an au where Niënor survives her fall and has a hurt/comfort thing with Mablung anyway here’s a bunch of rambling thoughts about a very niche ship
so the narn story doesn’t change much, this is basically just a bit of a sequel where Niënor survives her suicide attempt and Mablung finds her in the river
even though she survived, the river was not kind to her. several broken bones, half concussed from hitting her head, multiple infections from river grime entering open wounds and sores. she survived, but only barely. she wishes she was dead bc she’s in so much pain she can’t even move
not to mention the mental trauma. she just found out that she has been living a life that was not her own for the past three years, in which she was in a relationship with her own brother and got pregnant with an incest baby. she has to process all that while lying in the river half dead from her own suicide attempt. fun
Mablung, after frantically scouring the river for a full day without a minute of rest and almost declaring his efforts to find her vain, finally finds her and pulls her out of the river.
Mabs and his companions take care of her and dress her wounds. it’s a long healing process, she’s been through a lot
Niënor’s in no place mentally or physically to have a baby. it wouldn’t have made it anyway, falling off a cliff and all. elves aren’t very familiar with abortions since they literally can not have unplanned pregnancies, but they have heard of practices among the edain and they find an abortifacient from a Haladin herbalist. no moral hang-ups, they’re just like yeah this is what needs to happen if we want to save her life
when Niënor’s broken bones have healed, she goes out to see the stone bearing her name. it’s surreal to her, she feels like a ghost seeing her own grave. Mablung asks her if he should remove her name, but she wants it to stay as it is, her old self is dead and she’s a new person
Niënor’s thoughts on Túrin are. complicated. she hates him, she loves him, she hates herself for loving him, she will never forgive him, she will never forgive herself for loving him, she’s disgusted by those memories, she wishes she never knew the truth, she never wants to think about him again, she misses him. but mostly she mourns for the life that they could have had together, for the brother she never got to know as a brother
the attraction she felt towards Túrin immediately died upon the sibling reveal, but like she had someone who truly loved and cared for her, she had a pretty sweet domestic life with him for a little while. and she has to reconcile the fact that the relationship that once felt so good was actually this horrible traumatic thing. she hates the fact that a part of her still longs for that relationship
Niënor and Mablung had bit of a prior relationship in Doriath, and they do eventually fall in love with each other again, but between the suicide attempt, an identity crisis, and coming to terms with unfathomable trauma, romance is at the bottom of their list of priorities
it’s a slow process but they fall in love with each other again. Mablung still loved Niënor the whole time, but he’s patient and won’t push her if she’s hesitant to love again after everything that she went through. Niënor falls for Mabs again and for the first time she’s glad she survived her fall
they have sex for the first time—or at least, they try to. the sex triggers a flashback to the incest and Niënor freaks out. once the initial panic dies down she’s all “oh no I’m broken and unlovable :(“ and Mabs reassures her that he loves her and that she can take all the time she needs before they are ready to be intimate again, and it’s ok if she is never ready. and he cuddles with her and tells her how strong she is
they are eventually able to have sex again and it’s very slow and sweet and loving and Niënor starts crying a little and Mablung gets worried but she reassures him that she’s overwhelmed in a good way
I know babies ever after is a tired cliche but hear me out. Niënor wanted to be a mother, and she’s finally able to have a child with a relationship that is actually like, consensual

something something Túrin’s tragedy is that he loved people so much and especially his family and the reason why Niënor was the final straw was bc Túrin killed her not with violence but with love. her death told Túrin that he can't even love people

Gwindor and Nienor for the character asks?
Nienor
one aspect about them i love
just the sheer fact that she stood up to Glaurung like he’s nothing. Túrin couldn’t do that and he isn’t weak-willed himself. also she’s tall enough to successfully disguise herself as an elf man???
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
I mean, the fandom barely talks about her because she isn’t a skinny cousin shippable male Noldo. when I do see discussions or art of her a lot of them are just about how sad her story is :(((( and yeah her story is sad and all but where’s the art about how strong she was before she died? where’s the art about her calling a dragon a little bitch to his face? where’s my equally unhinged counterpart to Túrin?
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
Nienor took up her father’s hobbies, fishing, chopping wood, and she has the same hearty laugh. it was one of the only things that ever made Morwen cry, seeing her presumably dead husband in her daughter
one character i love seeing them interact with
I will cry about her and Mablung forever like there is the PERFECT setup for a tragic romance story right there. her life was tragedy after tragedy but for that year in Doriath she was happy, though her happiness could never last. and now they have to wait for the literal world to end to meet again and get that closure they were denied in life oh it hurts
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
I get from a story perspective why she would not get to meet Finduilas, but like, they should. they’re sisters in a way, they’re each other’s mirrors, they’re the representations of love and downfall, they’re yuri
I feel like if they could meet, Nienor/Finduilas wouldn’t be the same love at first sight that Finduilas had with Túrin. the similarities between Finduilas and Nienor initially put Finduilas off, as she sees not an idealized knight in shining armor, but a mirror image that includes her flaws
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
remember Sador the old carpenter? I’d like to think that Nienor also helped take care of him when Dor Lomin was taken over. Sador told Nienor about Túrin and grew her love for the brother she never knew (oh you sweet summer child)
Gwindor
one aspect about them i love
his sheer kindness in the face of both rejection and doom. event when he finds out that his own fiancée is rejecting him for the shiny new thing, he never scorns her, letting her follow her heart (Brandir take notes). and even though Túrin is a dummy Gwindor still loves him
tbh I think the Túrin/Finduilas/Gwindor triangle is a bit of a reflection of Tolkien’s own life experiences. Edith was already engaged to another man. if Túrin represents Tolkien, then Gwindor represents the third guy, and it shows us that Tolkien didn’t see that guy as an obstacle, just another person seeking love
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
this is more about Finduilas than Gwindor rip but I’ve seen the take that Finduilas is shallow for leaving Gwindor after he became disfigured and disabled. that interpretation is shallower than their supposed version of Finduilas. Túrin isn’t just some hot chad here to steal Finduilas from the virgin Gwindor after he became ugly, Túrin represents forward change where Gwindor represents stagnant stability. yeah Túrin’s dumbass plan to advertise the kingdom’s location to Morgoth didn’t work out well for anyone, but his drive to fight gave her hope, something that a captive of Angband was lacking
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
this art made me weep but also sparked a new headcanon that Gwindor was always really into stars. maybe he was an astronomer too
one character i love seeing them interact with
Gwindor’s relationship with Túrin is fascinating to me. they have the worst meet cute of all time, in one version he also has to stop Túrin from killing himself right as soon as they meet. Gwindor immediately knows that Túrin is trouble, yet he leads him home and grows to love him anyway. Gwindor loves Túrin probably as much as Beleg did, but Gwindor is also more critical of Túrin (not that Beleg was ever a yes-man, but he did still go along with Túrin when it was unwise). basically Gwindor loves Túrin but he wouldn’t exactly choose love over wisdom for him
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
I want to see his interactions with Finrod. Finrod went out on his quest with his most loyal lords, Gwindor not being one of them. Gwindor was not loyal to his king, who was the uncle of the woman he was due to marry. so he was not loyal to his own future family. and I want to know how that played out. or maybe I’m thinking too much into this and he just wanted to stay with Orodreth idk
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
Gwindor and Finduilas’ betrothal gifts were matching swords. oh and what if Gwindor died wielding that sword ;-;
