First Period (could be TMI)

So I want to share this story, but I don't want to embarrass the innocent party, so I will tell you.

On a Thursday recently my sister and I took our daughters (ages 2, 8 and 12) to a children's museum.

We all had a great time and went to our planned luncheon place at our planned time.

We all get settles in our booth.

Just as I am about to sit down, my 12 year old daughter says to me "Mom, I need you to get something from the car and I need to talk to you privately." Almost instantly I am filled with anticipation in what she's going to tell me.

We go to the car and she tells me she just got her period... her first period!

You guys/gals.... I cannot even begin to explain.... I had been dreaming and anticipating this day since she was born and I've been preparing myself and thinking about how I would react... would I gag like I did when I learned my sister started her period? Would I cry because omg she's too young!? Would I stiffen up and become severely uncomfortable like my own mom reacted when I was a young woman?

Well, I did none of those... and much to my surprise and my daughter's near embarressment... I was about to burst with pride and happiness and joy.... for now my very own daughter had an understanding of my monthly struggle and anguish and finally all of her recent outbursts and emotions were explained!

I couldn't stop smiling.... I had the literal urge to tell the complete strangers in the restaurant, although I didn't because I'm not that tactless.

The Hot Sock:                                                                                                    The hot sock is basically the layman’s – or should I say laywoman’s term – for a heating pad. This DIY heating pad is simple to make. Firstly, you find an old tube sock. Next, go to the kitchen and get some rice. Then fill the sock up about ¾ of the way with rice and tie the end with a rubber band. Lastly, throw it in the microwave for 45-50 seconds. You can adjust the time depending on how hot you want it to be, and it will stay warm for around 45 minutes.  

Exercise:                                                                                                        Doing light exercise is another great natural remedy for menstrual cramps. For instance, going on a light walk, practicing yoga or even Pilates can be extremely beneficial. The Journal of Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology found that yoga poses helped relieve the intensity and duration of menstrual cramps in a 2011 study of 18–22-year-old women.

Essential Oils:                                                                                          According to a healthline article the best essential oils for cramps are as follows:

Lavender

Cinnamon

An oil blend of cinnamon, clove, rose, and lavender mixed with almond oil

To use these you simply mix them with a carrier oil and massage them into your lower abdomen. For example, coconut, avocado, almond, or olive oil are all options you can use.

Ginger

The last natural remedy I will talk about today is ginger. Ginger is a spice that has significant anti-inflammatory affects. The NCBI discussed a study which concluded that if “ginger may be an effective and safe therapy for relieving pain in women….if administered at the onset or during the 3 days prior to menstruation” (Rahnama et al.). You can add ginger to hot or cold tea, your food, or you can eat it plain – although I wouldn’t recommend this.
