Hey so since we all know this will be a really dumb idea that will backfire, what are some skills that would actually benefit community building/survival in an apocalyptic setting? I know gardening, foraging, carpentry and sewing are some skills but what else do you guys think? 🤔

Leggings may be one of the most notorious items of fast fashion but, they don't have to be!
By repairing clothing, and giving garments a longer life, we can keep out of the cycle of buy & die. Because, let's be honest here: giving away clothes is no guarantee that they won't end up in the trash. The only guarantee is to mend & upcycle the garment ourselves!
The key here is to patch a small hole before it grows & grows. Really this is an easy fix and I wanted to share how it is done with just a few basic sewing supplies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this tutorial I used a lighter grey patch and silver thread so that the steps would be visible and easy to follow. Here I went with a #visiblemending look but, you may want to use a matching color of patch & thread so that the mend goes unnoticed.
Happy Mending!

organizing shampoo bars
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Organizing my shampoo and conditioner bars along with my sanitary pads.
I used a cardboard box, covered with leftover cloth that I sewed by hand.
I am far from perfect zero waste, couldn't adapt to menstrual cups or O.B. or menstrual panties.
However, not being perfect doesn't stop me from trying the best I can in all the rest.

The local farmers just started selling the first kohlrabi of the year, and I am always surprised seeing people throwing away the leaves of this underrated vegetable. So I would like to share a recipe from my grandma - a wonderful cook, and also a very frugal person.
For this budget-friendly kohlrabi soup, you focus on the leaves. My grandma often got them for free at the farmers market, even some supermarkets have "waste bins" for unwanted vegetable parts and will give you some because, as I said, most people use the bulbous stem only.
This serves two (hungry!) people, and you can improvise a lot. You will need half of the kohlrabi stem. Put the rest aside for a snack, you can even eat it raw, cut in thin slices and salted, like healthy crisps, or in a salad. Make the most of it! You will also need all of the leaves, an onion, and three small or medium sized potatoes. You could also use instant mashed potatoes instead, or add other vegetables of your choice. Go with whatever you have. Peel the kohlrabi stem, onion, and potatoes, remove the hardest parts of the leaves as depicted, and chop the vegs. (Frugal option: Put the peels in the freezer and use them later to make your own broth.)
Now add a tablespoon of vegetable oil (I used olive oil, but this is a "use what you have at hand" recipe.), and one teaspoon of sugar, and roast it gently until the onions start to brown. Add water until the vegs are just covered. Give this mixture some salt and pepper. Season to your taste. I highly recommend a pinch or two of ground nutmeg, rosemary and parsley for the fancy version of this. Bring it to a boil, reduce the heat, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Use a blender to make this smooth and creamy.
For a fancy version, serve it topped with some almonds, nuts, or fresh herbs.
The taste of kohlrabi leaves reminds of a mixture of broccoli and turnip. You can just wash and chop them and put them in the freezer, ready to be made into soup later. Don't throw them away - and if others do, get them for free! 🙂

Tevas Shipped + 2 Week Review
As expected they were super comfortable and so glad I was able to get them at a discount (they were releasing a new strap color so my guess is they wanted to sell old stock) of $37.00.
I am not sponsored, but I have no problem endorsing a product that I feel has done their due diligence and given me something worth paying for.
My sister decided to get a pair as well and once my mom found that she decided to sponsor the purchase, so in case she ever sees this, thank you for getting them!! I love them!!!
*Spongebob narrator voice* 2 Weeks Later...
For the first week, I wore them every single day backpacking (traveling on a budget) through Italy. They more than carried their weight on this trip. I took a risk and only brought them as my shoes. The entire trip, they were comfortable and were able to hit the uneven payment running. My complaints are few and far between.
Due to the nature of velcro, when one of the straps rubbed against the design pattern, it frayed the stitching a little bit but nothing a quick trim couldn't fix.
By the end of the week, the strap had rubbed a part of my skin raw (I was wearing socks with them), which caused some irritation. Also side note, Italians will point and laugh if they see you with socks and sandals lol.
This last one is user error, but as we took off in the plane, my foot swelled and the straps cut off circulation. Learned my lesson the second time around though and loosened them up a bit.
I am still more than happy with the purchase and would absolutely recommend them to anyone else.

Minimal Waste People!!! I Got Questions!!!
So this weekend my folks and I butchered some of our lambs and I want to use what I can of the leftovers but I need ideas (for the future as well). So far in progress/things saved are:
some stock from the leftover bones
using the knuckles to make some dice
making a decorative corset from the ribcage
tanning the hides for rough blankets/ren faire gear
Wondering if there's other things I could do to use more of the lamb than just the meat.

We're makin leaps and bounds with this whole sustainability thing since we moved from our apartment a few years ago. Whenever i feel like im not doin enough I lay out all the tiny swaps we've done on the table
we no longer by styrofoam cups and reuse the ones we have
We no longer use plastic plates, we either use glass or compostable ones (and throw the compostable ones in the compost)
Our building has solar panels for electricity
Our soaps are zero/low waste
My mother and I started our loc journey so its much easier to find all-natural, plastic free hair care
I use reusable pads
I don't buy new clothes often if at all, 4 shirts in the last 7 years
3/5 of us eat strictly plant-based bc we're vegan,
We have an indoor hydroponic system growing leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers and fruits, and we bought seeds in bulk. We're planning on swapping rockwool cubes with reusable and compostable hemp fiber cubes
Since the hydroponic system is so bright, and the led lights last for 5 years at a time, we use the living area lights much less, opting for natural sunlight if the hydroponic system is not enough or is off.
We have a bokashi indoor compost bin for food scraps, and an outdoor cold compost bin for the scraps that cant go in the bokashi bin to make our own soil
We started a kitchen garden, and a pollinator/tea garden, and as of 2023 we now have a plum tree, a grapevine, two blackberry bushes, 5 reusable grow bags, 4 big planters and 2 big raised garden beds, lookin forward to fruits and vegetables in the spring, summer, fall and winter. We're planning to buy one more steel raised bed to ensure that we are cycling through what we're growing each year to limit pest-control methods, even neem oil, and planning on purchasing a lot more perennials and native perennials/annuals.
This fall Im gonna purchase a mushroom growing chamber kit for more low waste vegan meat alternatives and to add some healthy mushroom soil to the compost cycle
Our laundry detergent is environmentally safe
Our washing machine is water-efficient
We have a fridge with a water filter for cooking and drinking water
We have reusable grocery store bags
Im gonna try to grow lufas next year to replace our kitchen sponges and steel wool scrubbing pads,
Our property is small, and our neighbors are not as social/gungho about bartering or Co-Op food gardening,
but I'm proud of wat we've done so far, and I can do a lot more, and I plan to do so, so any advice would be welcome
