[10:22 pm] breakup!au
time seems to freeze as you read the little bubble of text from jongho on the screen in front of you.
'hey. i don't want to do this because i don't want to hurt you. but i don't think i'm where i need to be to be in a relationship right now. i want to end it now before i end up hurting you'
hurt you???
hurt you?????
it was too late for that.
those kisses and giggles shared between the both of you.
the things you had shared with him and not anyone else.
the vulnerability and time you shared with him.
the promises he made...
how dare he think that by ending it now he would not hurt you.
how dare he think that he hadn't already become someone you cared about deeply.
how dare he break your heart like it was nothing to him.
how dare he love you so dearly for a moment just to let you go as if it were nothing to him.
through text.
how dare he.

better this way ; jeong yunho.
cw: angst. hurt no comfort. yunho x reader. breakup au. mentions of emotional manipulation. nothing in this piece depicts the personality of the real life characters.
Tumblr media
cold. a shiver ran down yunho’s back as a chilling breeze made its way down the busy street where the cafeteria he was in was located. it was almost like he couldn’t feel anything, his gaze still fixated on the cup of coffee in front of him and his racing mind still unable to slow down.
summer had dragged on slowly and tortuously without him noticing and finally, the first sketches of autumn could be seen all around the streets of seoul. yunho remembers that autumn used to be your favorite season. back then, you used to say that you loved watching trees with their bare branches, almost as much as you liked seeing them covered in beautiful greens, pinks and purples from their flowers and leaves. you loved to watch them like that because it meant that at some point their leaves would grow back, filled with life again and renewed and stronger than before, ready to face a new year after another cold, merciless winter. you used to say that trees were more beautiful that way, fragile and vulnerable but expectant for the near future, hoping for a brighter spring.
you used to say a lot of things and now, even after all this time, yunho could still vividly hear your voice gently brushing his ear, comforting in a way even though the mere thought of you hurt like a million crystals right trough his chest.
yunho wonders as he stirs the now cold coffee on his cup if he is somehow a tree. if he, just like the trees surrounding him, would also shine bright after all.
after you left he never tried to contact you again, the wound still so fresh that only one step in the wrong direction would be enough to drive him mad. he tries not to think about you too much, but it is in instances like this one when he is alone with only his thoughts to keep him company that he wonders if you are okay. if you, as same as him, are unable to heal.
after you left you didn't tried to call him either, not even once. he wonders, and he wonders a lot, how is that possible. how, after years of laughs, tears, hugs, kisses and shared dreams you didn't tried to text him, you didn't tried to check on him.
truth to be told, months have passed since the last time he saw you. you left your shared apartment on a good spring morning, one in which the birds sung happily out of his window and the scent of flowers flooded the streets with ruthless freshness, ironically contrasting with his own feeling of emptiness. he never felt like it was real because after that day he tried to drown his emotions, to cage them in a dark corner of his heart where the pain couldn’t reach him anymore and it almost worked. at least for a while.
after you broke off your engagement, he desperately tried to focus on work. to make himself so busy that he didn’t have to think of you and he could replace the nagging feeling of guilt deeply rooted on his chest with something else, anything. if somebody were to ask him, the first couple of weeks were the hardest. it was so difficult to look around and not see you there, smiling at him with your soft hair all scattered and your pretty eyes looking at him with nothing but devoted care.
he tried making himself so tired with nights out and countless one night stands that at some point, the sole idea of getting a shot of alcohol down his throat or the sole idea of touching another body or letting another hands that weren’t yours touch him would repulse him. none of these people were you. none of these people cared about him and he didn’t care about any of them. he missed you, and he didn’t know how to stop.
looking back to the day you left, yunho remembers feeling so numb that he acted like he didn’t care and that drove you away even further. no tears were shed, but the pained sparkle of disappointment in your eyes would never leave his mind. deep down, the confusion and hurt in his chest were still eating him alive.
he couldn’t name the moment your relationship had broke beyond repair. he couldn’t put his finger on the exact reason why you had left, even after all your explaining and the obvious frustration on your face each time you tried to communicate your feelings to him and he didn’t react. like talking to a wall made of bricks, so thick that none of your words would really reach him.
you hadn’t cheated. he hadn’t cheated. you had not betrayed each other like that, but to be honest, he had done far worse. he had made everything and anything on the book so as to break your trust slowly, to make you feel like you were alone and it was a battle against him instead of a battle of you two against the world.
you had asked him several times, jokingly at first but also with tears streaming down your face and later on, with a dead stare plastered over your annoyed features. you wanted to know why, although he said he loved you, he could never listen to you and stop hurting you.
yunho never really listened because he always thought that as long as you were well taken care of financially and as long as he never cheated, you would never leave.
he never stopped flirting with other people, no matter if you were around to see or not. he never cut off people who were disrespectful to your relationship under the premise of not having to please everybody as long as you were happy together. he never stopped pressuring you into changing your mind whenever you made a decision that wasn’t satisfying enough to him and he could never stop himself from manipulating situations so as to make you believe everything was your fault and you were the one that needed to change.
he noticed the progressive changes in your attitude towards him over the months. how you went from a happy and caring partner to a person who had grown fearful of him, closed off now to any sort of emotional intimacy due to him disregarding you each and every time.
not everything was bad though, and yunho thinks that may be the reason why you hesitated so much before leaving. he was never outright disrespectful or violent towards you and he never went too far with words either. he was always there to support your career and hobbies, he was always charming to your friends and family and he always made sure to give you love in other ways.
that was the problem, in your opinion. that he always gave you everything except for what you explicitly asked and needed. he was always there, but you couldn’t feel more alone. in your own words, a roller coaster in which the good times were priceless and unmatched and the bad times were so bad, that you never wanted to go back. but you ended up doing it, and each and every time you would lose a piece of yourself in order to please him, to the extent that by the end of your relationship, you were nothing but a shell of the person you used to be.
that was also something he used to nag you about, and as he remembered, he couldn’t help but wince. why couldn’t you be as bright and bubbly as you used to be? were you that comfortable in the relationship that you couldn’t show happiness around him anymore? always fighting, always with an attitude, in his own words. why couldn’t you be more like his friend’s partners? why, why, why?
looking back on it yunho understood now why you had grown tired of pushing and fighting, a one sided relationship you were now sick of trying to keep afloat. and to that day, yunho was still unable to explain his train of thought or why he treated you the way he did.
and so you had left. ha had been in denial for a while, and the first time that he heard from one of your mutual friends that you were on the dating scene again, he had lost his mind. he visited your favorite coffee place at least once every week in hopes to catch a glimpse of you, just like he was doing right now. he would look around and be surprised by the way everything around him seemed to change except for him. you never went back and if he knew you well, it was because you had changed your entire routine so as to avoid him and the memories, too. he wanted you back, much more now that he knew from other people that you wanted to move on. and still, he never called.
if you had to be honest you had half expected him to contact you at least once and never let you go, just like he had promised back when you were still sure he was the love of your life. but he didn’t. on the back of his mind, he knew that wouldn’t be fair, so he gave up. and so, you grew apart with such ease that to this day it was still difficult to believe that just a couple of months ago you were about to get married with the man you shared all of your moments with. he was there all of the time and suddenly he wasn’t anymore.
for him it had felt like the last six months had gone by without him knowing. he could barely remember anything from those months but he couldn’t remember much either from the time you were together.
sometimes yunho thinks of you as some kind of fever dream. he doesn't think of you as real anymore since he can't remember your touch on his skin or how your lips felt on his, and the only proof that you ever existed and were a part of his life was the sinking feeling of longing and nostalgia when he looked at the very familiar corner of that coffee place, with its trees bare facing the promise of a cold winter, and when he looked at the ring you had proposed with on his right hand, the ring that he refused to take off.
he doesn’t remember much but he doesn't try to remember either. he doesn't want to. he knows that facing those memories would mean he would have to face the fact that he hurt you and lost you, all on his own.
"maybe you were just a figment of my imagination, maybe I made it all up in my head"
and maybe, just maybe, it was better that way.

The Heart Wants What It Wants
Tumblr media
A/N: So I'm gonna be completely honest, lately this song has just been stuck in my head, it's so beautiful. Like wow, Selena Gomez did an amazing job with this song 👏🏼 So beautifully written, and the melody. On another note I haven't written anything in a while, so don't judge my crappy written story/imagine. Sorry that it is short but I'm trying okay ;-; Hope y'all enjoy it. Might be my last imagine, just depending on life ya know? But yeah here we go....
-
Darkness and coldness surrounded the entire room. I pull my blankets closer for warmth, and turn to my side. The spot where he usually sleeps empty, it's been four months since I've ended with him. I feel a burning sensation in eyes, and tears start to roll down my cheeks. I wipe it away with shaky hands, I refuse to cry more than I should be. I slowly sit up from the bed, and look around the room. Unwanted, but lovely memories plague my mind from the time we said I love yous, to nights where he would claim me as his own. A bittersweet smile graces my face, what was once filled with laughter, and joy. Now it has been replaced by loneliness.
Despite my heart telling me to stay in bed, I get up and head to the bathroom. I turn on the shower and strip myself down. Once I enter the shower, the hot water instantly relaxes my muscles. I grab the shampoo bottle, and squirt some onto my hand. I then proceed to put it onto my hair, and once again another memory comes up from when I'd come home stressed from work and he would be waiting home. Making me my favorite meal, filling the bathtub with warm water to destress my aching muscles, to putting on my favorite movie, to us tangled up in the sheets, and him holding me close. I sigh and rinsed the shampoo out of my hair, to rid myself of the memory. I grabbed the soap and scrub my body wanting to forget how his touch felt. I rinse myself off and grab the towel from the counter top. I head inside to the room and grab my clothes out of the drawers. I finished dressing and turned to the clock. 12pm, I read. I open the curtains, and the warmth of the sun hits my skin. I smile and head downstairs.
The moment I step into the living room, memories come rushing in, to the time we celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, when we'd argue about small things, to us dancing around and laughter would fill the room. Tears gather in my eyes but I blink them away.
"Come get it together," I think to myself. "When are you going to get it through your head that he doesn't want you anymore!"
My heartaching after reminding myself that he no longer wants anything to do with me. I walk into the kitchen and decide to make myself a small meal. Once I finished making my meal, I sit on the table and feel the coldness and loneliness seep throughout the house. Where he would sit across from me, the spot, his spot empty like it has always been these four months. I toss the reminding food to the trash, place my dishes in the sink and head to my room.
Everything I do, every part of this house reminds me of him. I try so hard to forget about him, reminding myself that he was the one who ended our relationship, that he's the one that found company in someone else, the one who cheated but yet my heart yearns to be close to him. To touch, to kiss, for him to love me like he once did, and forget about the pain that he put me through. I wipe away the tears that started to roll down my cheeks, and throw the blankets over me. Once again welcoming the loneliness and darkness surround me. I know I should be hating him for what he's put me through, but I can't because I still love him, and like they always say the heart wants what it wants.

y/n’s perspective
“I’ve missed this place,” Wooyoung said as he got out of the elevator first.
“You know, Taeyong is angry with you” I heard as I saw Yuta and I smiled. “He should’ve expected this,” I said and he chuckled. “Yes… but he needs to bring some sense to Kun” he said and I nodded.
“I can at least text him you're okay and you've made it back safely. Johnny also told me you needed a lot of rest, and to change the bandages once a day at least and clean them. He said that if you feel weak or tired, slow down and let your body rest you just got out of a coma” he scolded and I chuckled.
“I can clean your wounds, '' Seonghwa asked and I smiled. “Thank you,” I said and I chose to ignore Yeosang’s glare at him. “Please take care of her… and y/n this place is clean but Johnny said avoid your room in case it triggers a bad memory,” he said and I nodded sadly.
“Sleep early tonight, by the morning everyone's gonna know you're awake,” he said and I nodded as he left. “Come on, let's get ready for bed first,” Yeosang said and I nodded. Preening… or grooming a dog's version of taking care of their mate. I smiled softly at the thought.
“I’ll make you some tea!” Wooyoung said as he went to the kitchen looking through the cupboard. “I’ll get the first aid kit ready,” Seonghwa said and I was happy to feel relieved around them again.
Tumblr media
I woke up to Seonghwa’s voice saying breakfast was made. Yeosang and Wooyoung tightened their grip on me. “A few more minutes,” Yeosnag said, still sleepy… “yeah a few more– WHY ARE YOU MAKING BREAKFAST THAT'S MY JOB!” Wooyoung yelled and I laughed.
“It's already noon, and you were in a deep sleep. It's technically lunchtime already” Seonghwa said and I chuckled. “Thank you, Seonghwa,” I said and he smiled.
“I did what I could with what was in the fridge. There was a lot of old food so I cleaned it out” he said and I nodded. “Oh. Seonghwa, that's your job now” Wooyoung said and I laughed. Wooyoung did hate to clean the fridge and after he cooked.
We ate our food while I looked at my messages… Everyone was texting me to feel better and that they were glad I was okay. Kun still hasn’t texted me…
“Are we going back?” Wooyoung asks and I smile softly. “I can go alone, if you’d like?” I asked and he looked sad about that. “I’ll go with you” Yeosang and Seonghwa said at the same time.
“I think it's best if I go alone… I need to talk to San and maybe see how bad it is” I said and they nodded. At the end of the day… San was my first hybrid I promised to him. I wasn’t gonna let him down now.
“Are you gonna see Hongjoong?” Seonghwa asks and I sigh. “I… should’ve been more professional about handling Hongjoong. I got too into my head and I forgot the tell signs of a hybrid. I’m licensed in handling red code hybrids… so I feel like I owe him a try” I explained and they looked nervous for me.
“I’ll have to talk to Kun first, however”
Tumblr media
“You’re… okay,” he said speechless. He came up and hugged me tight… There was a time when my parents didn’t care what I did, they just made sure I had enough money to take care of myself.
Kun was one of my friends who became like an older brother to me… he was protective and overall cared a lot about my well-being even after my breakup with Hendery. Even when my parents found out I studied writing and not business or a respectable white-collar degree.
“I saw… your heart stops, I thought you weren’t gonna make it” he cried out and I sighed. “Well, here I am,” I said and he only tightened his grip.
“When Doyoung said you were here yesterday I didn't believe him… and then Johnny and Taeyong confirmed and– I’m just happy you’re okay” he said and I smiled as he let me go.
“Wooyoung was really bad. He’s never experienced a depressive episode that bad, he’d at least eat and go outside but not once did he move. He’d stare at the door constantly to see if you’d appear” he said and it broke my heart. “Yeosang’s owner was trying to bribe our shareholders to be given Yeosang but my family wouldn’t give in” he explained.
“Thank you for trying your best even when you assumed I was dying” I said and he sighed. “Why did you take that tiger with you?” he asked and I sighed.
“I… I didn’t tell you but Hongjoong got to me when I interviewed him. He mentioned a hybrid would do anything to survive and compared it to them” I said and he looked at me disappointed.
“You should’ve known better. Those hybrids… has anyone told you about San?” he trailed off and I shook my head. “They said he was a code purple and his mind is scattered, can't tell time, aggressive?” I said and he nodded.
“San… we originally had them all together when they were first here but he turned violent wanting to hurt Hongjoong. When we isolated him the next day he kept muttering to himself ‘any second now’ as if you’d pick him up. Hours after he attacked you… you came for him only hours after and he thinks that’ll happen again. No matter if we remind him three times a day he'll forget… I'm worried about how he’ll behave when he’s with you again” he said and I sighed.
“I need to see him. '' I said and he sighed “Let us… make sure he’s okay first” he said and I nodded. “In the meantime then… what happened to Hongjoong?” I asked and he shook his head.
“He's not going with you–” “He’s already my hybrid… I didn’t give him a chance or anything to prove him wrong. I let him get to me and in return only proved him right” I said and he scoffed.
“Those bandages on your neck are because of him. Your hybrids suffered because of him and I still want to help him?” he asked me angrily.
“Kun… when we were kids, you saved a hybrid and he’s still with you today but remember Sicheng with Yuta and how he was just as aggressive. Abused and neglected, his parents wanted Sicheng dead but you made a promise to Yuta and now he’s in a sanctuary in China at your family’s estate. You told me you’d help any hybrid you could and that's why you have this job… please do me this favor” I begged and he sighed.
“You owe me”
Tumblr media
It was like it was almost a month ago.
Preparing to interview him… the difference is I'm not here for business nor do I have Seonghwa’s protection. I took a deep breath and entered the red code area. It had hybrids locked behind impenetrable glass and a metal covering in front of it instead of the curtains the other hybrids had.
I made it to his kennel when I saw his report… it had a determined sign. He was gonna be sent to a different center… in China?
I noticed the metal covering was now being lifted. They must've noticed on the cameras I was there already. He was in a corner… his tail twitching and his constraints were clearly uncomfortable.
“Hello,” I said and his ears lifted up… he looked over his shoulder to see me. He shook his head… “You're not real” he muttered as his head faced the corner again
“Maybe I’m not. Maybe I'm here to haunt you” I joked and his ears twitched… “Why did you do that?” I asked curious if he’d answer. “I didn’t… want to kill you. I-I want… just want to be free” he said his voice only getting more vulnerable.
“Seonghwa hates me now… I have no one, I'm alone and I'm going somewhere I don’t even recognize. I have your blood on my hands… it won’t go away” he muttered.
“I… never killed anyone. I didn’t… I wanted… I don’t know anymore. I’m sorry” he said and I could see how his back shook. Was he crying?
“Did you know… I went to your show when I was a kid” I confessed and he froze. “My parents were busy… they couldn't take care of me. So they had a hybrid take care of me. She was a bear hybrid, and they made her take me to the Circus… I had a front-row seat, I remember seeing you” I said and he now turned to look at me. His eyes are glassy and red.
“You looked like you liked to perform. I may have been naive to what they did to hybrids… but you were a part of the main show with Seonghwa” I confessed and he shook his head. “You’re not real” he kept muttering to assure himself.
“I remember a different ringleader than the one I interviewed… he approached me and asked where my parents were. When my babysitter tried to explain, he yelled at her to be quiet. That a lowly hybrid shouldn’t talk to him that way–” he furrowed his eyebrows. He stood up and tried getting as close to the glass as the chains let him.
“–I told him my parents were busy and she was taking care of me. He laughed and said that bear hybrids belong to the circus not taking care of kids like me–” he now sat down and looked at me confused and probably questioning if I was really here “–she cried on the drive home. The ringleader gave me a phone number and told me to tell my parents he offered a ton of money for her. I know… that she didn’t trust me. So when we came home my parents were already there… They asked if I liked the show. It's when I remember looking at her and she smiled a sad smile at me with glassy eyes…” he looked at me curious and maybe interested in what I was saying?
“I started to cry. I hugged my mom saying the ringleader yelled at me and her, demanding to see them. They were… angry to say the least, and he was fired, but that didn’t mean the place was shut down” I said sadly.
“What happened to the hybrid?” he asked and I sighed. “She… stayed with me until I had to go to college. That night she tucked me in and she muttered a thank you. I loved her like I did my mother… but one day when I returned from college to visit her they told me she was no longer needed, and so they sent her away” I said and he nodded.
“I remember that night…  men in suits came and said they were gonna sue. The next ringleader was a co-owner of his so nothing changed… are you real?” he asked and I smiled.
“Am I?” I asked and he sighed.
“I’d like to believe you are… even if I'd be lying to myself. Can I ask… where's Seonghwa?” he asked and I debated on telling him. “Happy,” I said and he smiled softly.
“I hope he is. I hope he gets adopted… he loved seeing the amazed kids when he did a trick and even the hybrids. He always would say to me, he wants to be as oblivious as them… where he doesn’t know what abuse is any more” he said as he cried again.
“I would always tell him… that it would be impossible. He’d have to be human, it's when I learned you could buy citizenship and a species change” he said… the illegal black market in Korea was dangerous. However, the surgeries they offered were hybrids… it was nearly impossible to achieve but an even smaller percentage rate of survival…
“It’s stupid… that was my plan and now I don’t even want it. Seonghwa spoke highly of you–” he was now lying down facing his back to me “–he got along the best with Wooyoung and he’d explain to him how you saved all three of them. I never understood what you did” he said and I sighed.
“It wasn’t until they told us… San was a part of the illegal fighting rings for hybrids. No one survived over a month and yet he was a survivor of all his life. Wooyoung abandoned and Yeosang prostituted… and now us, circus captivated tigers…” he said as his whole body shook as he cried.
“Wooyoung he said how… you wrote about hybrid rights, but I thought it was an act” he confessed and I sighed. “What would you do if you were ever given a second chance–” “I don’t deserve it. I’ll suffer the rest of my life like I was born to,” he said and it made me freeze.  Did he really believe that?
“I’m sorry, y/n. I wish you never met me”
Tumblr media
I walked out and I immediately hugged Kun.
“Does he really believe that?” I asked and he sighed. “Maybe I judged him a little harshly. Maybe I was a bit biased that he almost killed you in particular,” he said and I nodded. “Do you want to see San now?” he asked and I nodded… I was worried about how he’d react. I was led to an area where the hybrids had no privacy. They were allowed to do the danger to themselves. We stopped at a kennel… San.
“San, you have a visitor,” Kun said and he looked up and saw me. “y/n!!” he yelled with a big grin on his face. “Hi, Sannie,” I said and he smiled… until his eyes wandered to my jaw. “I’m okay, how have you been?” I said, trying to get his attention.
“I did that to you…” he said, confusing me. “What?” I asked. “I didn’t mean to hurt you… I love you, you're the only one who cares about me” he said as he put his head down almost in shame.
“San… this wasn't you” I explained and he looked at me confused. “Do you remember Hongjoong?” I asked and his eyes darkened “He hurt you!” he yelled now angry.
He lost any recollection of time…
“San… who am I?” I asked him and he looked at me shocked. “What do you mean? Why would I forget you? You're… my mate” he said, unsure of himself.
“San… please get better”
Tumblr media
“Please stop crying,” Kun said as I cried in his office. He wasn’t sure of anything… What does he even think of me? Of Wooyoung… of Yeosang?
“You should get back home… you need rest” he said and I shook my head. “But San… what if he forgets I was here–” “He hasn’t… he’s pacing his room muttering your name. Give him time to finally think for himself,” he said and I was satisfied with that answer.
“I… I was never meant to own hybrids, was I?” I asked and he shook his head. “You're an amazing owner… you’ve rescued them at their worst and given them a second chance. Give him time” he said and I didn’t know if I believed him.
“How’s… Hongjoong?” I asked and he sighed. “Are you sure you want to take him with you? He needs to be tested and analyzed first… I need to see if he can go down to at least an orange” he asked and I nodded. “Can I see him before I leave?” I asked and he nodded, leading me out of his office and to Hongjoong again.
I entered again with the button and went in front of his kennel. I waited for the metal curtain to open and he was right where I last saw him.
“You’re… back? You are real… you’re alive” he said and I smiled. “Hello, Hongjoong,” I said and he looked at me confused and… scared.
“Improve… you're still my responsibility. So when you go down to an orange, you can live a life like Seonghwa. Or… I can pay for your freedom”
Tumblr media
I went back home.
I cried to Wooyoung all night. Seonghwa and Yeosang were worried but I wanted to be with Wooyoung. He has been here since the beginning.
He… somehow convinced San to trust me and now it was gone. It felt empty with San.
“Why won’t you tell me what's got you like this?” Wooyoung asked me and I could only tighten my grip on his body. I didn’t want him to leave…
“I made breakfast… I’m sorry Wooyoung but–” “She needs to eat, thanks hyung”
I was suddenly lifted up to my bed. “You need to eat… then you can get dressed and see him again. That's what you need right now” he said and I couldn’t stop the tears spilling.
“Angels aren’t supposed to cry…” I heard as I saw Yeosang. “Eat, please for me,” Wooyoung asked and I listened. I didn’t know what to do…
“What happened yesterday?” he asked and I sighed as I picked at the food on the plate in front of me. “San… his memory is all over the place. He thinks he attacked me… then I reminded him it was Hongjoong and he turned angry… and he could barely tell me who I was” I confessed and they sighed.
“I also gave Hongjoong the option of living here again–” “No!” Yeosang said and I smiled. “Trust me… he doesn’t seem bad. Besides… I also gave him the option for his freedom” I said and they looked at me confused.
“I… can get in contact with a surgeon to make him look human. I can find him an identity and give him enough for a fresh start” I said and they looked at me shocked.
“Those surgeries are low survival–” “That's mainly because they don’t have enough money… I would have to ask a hefty favor to Taeyong but I can get in contact with a good surgeon, and pay them enough to make sure he was okay” I said and they looked at me… concerned.
“Seonghwa, if you wanna go with him–” “No… I don't want to be human. I’d rather live here if you'd let me,” he said and I smiled. “The offer will always stand… for any of you,” I said and Yeosang and Wooyoung shook their heads.
“We’re happy with you”
Tumblr media
I was back here…
I was in front of Hongjoong’s kennel. The curtains raised up and he was pacing almost like he was waiting. “Hi, Hongjoong!” I said trying to offer a grin despite how drained I felt.
“No offense but it looks like you haven't slept,” he said and I chuckled. “I haven’t… have you decided or need more time?” I asked and he sighed.
“Seonghwa… is he happy?” he asked and I didn’t know. “I gave him the option to be free like I could do for you… but he declined '' I said and he smiled. “Why are you offering me so much? Thank you for helping Seonghwa… you can give him everything but why are you doing this for me?” he asked and I shrugged.
“You deserve a chance…” I said and he shook his head. “I don’t,” he said and I tried to offer him a smile. “I could’ve killed you” he cried out. “San… he hates humans you know?” I said and he looked at me confused.
“He… hated me. Said I only adopted him to abuse him… I admit my reason for adopting him wasn’t too great. When I first saw him I was captivated… but I learned that he couldn’t be adopted because of his past and his code. So I took my chance and did what I could… but he never did trust me. So he yelled… and he taunted me. He hurt me a little bit but he accidentally knocked over a vase I had to push him out of the way so he didn't get hurt. I… got better and went to make sure he was okay but he didn’t want me to be his owner” I explained and he looked at me painfully confused.
“He loves you… I may have tormented you and planted lies but the way he looks at you… he really does love you” he confessed and I smiled softly.
“Overtime… he trusted me. He made me his mate… he's important to me” I said, trying not to cry. “Is he okay?” he asked and I couldn’t answer. “Hongjoong, I gave him a second chance too. So… what do you wish for? Freedom or… live with me?” I asked and he sighed.
“Does… Seonghwa hates me?” he asked and I knew he valued his companion a lot. “He doesn’t… I gave him the option too, you know?” I asked and he chuckled. “He chose to stay with you, I know that for sure,” he said and I smiled softly.
“I… want to give you a second chance too, and I want to redeem myself”
Tumblr media
While Hongjoong was getting checked out, I was led to San.
He was staring at me once I came to view… his tail swishing behind him. He was still so pretty… and I loved him so much.
“You're… y/n. I hated you… then I trusted you… then I loved you” he said and I felt my eyes widen. “I hurt you… then I met, Yeosang?” he asked me and I shook my head. “Wooyoung,” I said and he nodded. “The fox… he had a pathetic crush on you,” he said, making me laugh softly. Kun was beside me… he also looked confused.
“Yeosang… his owner abused him? He’s… friends with Wooyoung. Doberman and Fox” he said… he was concentrating on facts. “You… adopted two dogs?” he asked while looking at me and I shook my head. “Uhm… cats?” he asked and I shook my head again. “They're from the circus– Tigers!” he yelled and I smiled. “One of them… hurt you,” he said and I nodded.
“How long… have you left us here?” he asked me with a sad tone.
“San… I came back for you as soon as I could.” I said and he nodded. “What happened to you? Why do you have those big bandages on your face?” he asked and I slid. “I was in a coma for a long time,” I said and he let out a breathy sigh.
“Hongjoong’s claws cut a bit too deep into my skin… so I have bandages on. I woke up the day before yesterday” I explained and he nodded. “I trust you… I know you're my mate and I know I love you my head just hurts” he explained and I nodded. He was gonna be like this for a while…
“But I… just wanna go with you. Please don’t leave me here again”
Tumblr media
“San!” Wooyoung yelled as he tackled the panther who tensed up. “This is Wooyoung… the fox you met,” I said as I pulled Wooyoung away from him. San nodded and I could see their confused faces of what was happening.
“He’s mated to you too,” San muttered as he pulled me to him.
“Do you not remember us?” Wooyoung asks and San shakes his head. “Dissociative amnesia is what they're calling it… in his case it's because of an event that causes his brain to go into shock. Kun says in his case he should be able to regain memory with everyday activities but… we should also be prepared if he doesn’t” I said and I could see the worry on Wooyoung and Yeosang’s faces as well as the guilt in Hongjoong and Seonghwa.
“I hope we can get along”

hongjoong
hongjoong has to hold his tongue each time you tell him you have a partner
because he has a problem with it. and he doesn't realise at first why he had such a problem with it
until you come to him crying because of the horrible breakup you were currently going through
he let you cry on his chest and cuddled you close for the rest of the night
... yeah, this is the guy who supposedly 'doesn't like skinship'
and yet here he is, wanting nothing more than for you to stay in his arms, where he can keep you close and safe
and thus, his feelings are realised. and suddenly being jealous of all the guys you ever talked about started to make sense to him
seonghwa
seonghwa can't help but feel a little disheartened
seeing the people you end up with and how they always end in disaster, he feels bad for you, of course
but he can't help but feel you are missing out on a guy that has always treated you with love, respect, sincerity, kindness, and nothing less
*cough, cough* HIM *cough*
he will continue to comfort you and provide a listening ear as your... 'confidant'. but all he really wants to do is ask you to be with him instead, so that you'll know what it's really like to be in a good relationship. one that doesn't have an ending...
but he wants to choose an appropriate time to confess his feelings. so for now, he'll be there to dry your tears
yunho
yunho would literally take the complete piss out of your partners like he's so shameless
can and will laugh in your face when you whine about your relationship issues
because he knows they would all be solved if you go out with him
and he'll flirt with you and make jokes about you guys dating:
"you know, none of this would be an issue if you went out with me 👀" or "technically, we're on a date right now... as we speak... should we kiss?"
but you just take that as him being one of THOSE besties who just flirts for the sake of it
and he's giggling and laughing along but really he's dead-ass serious ☠
it's all fun and games ig??
yeosang
would focus more on your feelings than his own
he wants to comfort you and be a supportive friend; he's not going to let his feelings for you get the better of him when you're going through a relationship crisis or a bad breakup
and it doesn't really faze or hurt him at all. he's good at separating his feelings for you and being a comforting, good best friend
whether that's healthy or not is up for discussion!!
but unless you suddenly take a serious interest in him and make advances to him first, he's not going to go for it himself
because if he reads your signals wrong, he is at risk of ruining your friendship
and he would rather have at least one connection with you, rather than none at all
san
san is always there for you
especially when you have just broken up with your asshole partner that he hates so much anyway. he is there to cuddle you tight to his chest and comfort you, asking if you want him to beat your ex up, etc...
he's a great friend in this way. but he can't help but feel like he wants more
and so he hopes and wishes that you see his efforts. you appreciate his comfort and the way he's there for you whenever you need him - enough to not go out with anyone who isn't worth your time, but rather, go out with him
and he might just come out and say this because he can't bare to deal with another one of your heartbreaks
"this is where i want you to be," he'll say. "in my arms. every night. not just the nights you get dumped. you deserve so much better, baby. and i want to be the one to make that happen."
mingi
he literally loves you he loves you HE LOVVVESSS YOU
it's so obvious, come on guys
when mingi has a crush on somebody it's painfully obvious, it's actually hilarious
so you ignoring his adoring eyes and his attempts to make goofy jokes only to see your smile, and the way he buys you gifts and dotes on you and does anything for you ITS SO OBVIOUS
but yeah, stay blind ig?
he will flinch every time you mention your partner or your ex only because that pulls him right back into the reality that he is, in fact, not dating you currently
then he gets pouty but tries his best to hide his disappointment about the situation and fails lmao
wooyoung
will get frustrated. like, superrrr frustrated
because he has a massive phat crush on you BUT he has to hear about all the people you've dated and blah blah blah
ON TOP OF THAT!!!! he gives you advice on how to fix your relationships that pretty much inevitably fail anyway?? nope, he's defo losing it
for the longest time, he's always wanted to just ask you out himself. but there was never a good time. between you going out with people and recovering from break-ups, he never deemed it appropriate
but after what felt like the thousandth time of you crying about some asshole who had broken your heart, wooyoung had finally given in to his desires
"you're not going to waste any more energy on someone who doesn't care about you. instead, you're going to use it on me, your new boyfriend."
jongho
jongho is hilarious in this situation
because he's so subtly trying to make it clear that he likes you in his own... special way
he's not always sure how to go about it
to be fair, he's a very good supportive friend. he provides with the consolation and comfort you need when you come to him with relationship problems or are going through a breakup
but he also tries to use this as an opportunity to give you hints here and there
"you know... the love of your life might be closer than you think 👀"
"maybe your next partner is with us right now 👀 👀 👀"
".... but it's just me and you, jongho."
" 👀 isn't that interesting, y/n"
i literally can't take him seriously atp

The boys dropped you off at your apartment since it was on the way to their house and you promised Sangmi that you’d go to the party together. Not to mention you needed some more things for your outfit; makeup and undergarments. After waving goodbye to them as they drove off, you spun around on your heels. You walked into the apartment building, nodding hello to the workers in the lobby and quickly getting into the elevator and riding it to the fifth floor.
You unlocked the front door and walked in, finding Sangmi and two of your friends, Daniel and Minseong, in the living room playing Uno as they waited for you. At the sound of you entering the 2 bedroom apartment, they all set down their cards and turned to greet you.
“Hey.” You smiled at them warmly, letting the two men side hug you as you clutched your bag of clothes in your dominant hand. “Are you guys also coming to the party?”
“Of course! Daniel needs to get super drunk so he can forget about his rough breakup with Sunhee.” Minseong laughed, lightly punching his best friend in the arm.
They were already changed into something you’d expect them to wear to a party. Daniel wore a silky blue button-up tucked into a pair of black pants, chains hanging from his belt while Minseong had a much more casual outfit—blue jeans and a loose white tank top. Nevertheless, both of them looked positively handsome.
“I moved on, and so has she,” the brunet shrugged, “I saw her and Daehyun looking awfully smitten in building C earlier.”
You regarded his posture carefully, squinting in disbelief. “You’re still in love with her, aren’t you?”
Daniel’s face suddenly changed to a pained grimace, hand coming up to wipe away non-existent tears. “Yeah, I am.” He straightened himself out and offered the three of you another shrug. “I don’t know… it’s been like a week, and everywhere I go I just end up looking around and hoping I see her somewhere.”
“You were together for almost three years, it’s okay to miss that relationship.” Sangmi patted his shoulder reassuringly before turning around and heading to the kitchen, grabbing a cup and filling it with water. She continued, speaking over her shoulder. “And who knows, maybe you’ll find someone at the party today.”
Assuming that the conversation was over, you excused yourself and shuffled to your bedroom. You pulled the new clothing items and laid them out on your bed, trying to decide what else you’d wear. The corset top didn’t seem like it needed a bra, so you just pulled out black panties. Feeling that it needed one more thing, you grabbed a pair of white thigh-high socks.
Once you had everything on, you sat at your desk and did your makeup, watching what you did through the desktop mirror. You were never a fan of thick layers of cakey makeup, so you opted to go for a light look.
You put a little bit of eyeshadow on your eyelids, followed by some iridescent glitter, a thin straight line of eyeliner and some mascara on your upper and lower lashes before dusting some blush on your cheeks. As a final touch, you applied red-tinted lipgloss to your plump lips.
For your hair, you brushed it and then fluffed it up, too lazy to style it properly. Everything looked great when looked at yourself in the mirror in your closet and you exited the room with a smile, happy with your choices. You heard a low whistle as you walked past the kitchen and turned to find Minseong checking you out. Feeling generous, you gave him a twirl.
You knew he didn’t mean anything by praising you for your looks, too committed and in love with his boyfriend—who he was going to meet up with at the party—so you didn’t question it when he came up to you and wrapped an arm around your waist, leading you to the living room so you could all leave.
“You went shopping?” Sangmi raised an eyebrow, looking you up and down and then nodding approvingly.
“Mhm,” you hummed in confirmation, taking the hems of each side of your white shirt and parting them so she could get a better look at the corset. “Don’t worry, I still have money for the rent. Wooyoung and his friends paid for me.”
The three of them stilled and looked at you, then at each other, then at you again.
“Are you fucking any of them?”
Taken aback, you choke on nothing and step away from Minseong as the question leaves his lips, holding your hands up. “Woah. Let’s calm down a bit. No, of course, I’m not!”
“But why would they just pay for you? We saw the bag, that place is not cheap by any means.” Daniel leaned against the back of the couch, arms crossing over his chest.
“I’ve been getting close with Wooyoung because of our project and he obviously sees me as a friend. They’re filthy rich and from what I can tell, they’re nice people. So, I’ll do you one better.” You mirrored his pose, sticking your chin up and crossing your arms over your chest. “Why would they ever think to sleep with me?”
Sangmi snorted. “They’ve probably gone through more than half the girls on campus.”
On one of the days when you and Wooyoung were working together, Seonghwa decided to keep you guys company again. It was that day that you asked them about the rumours. They admitted to having slept around quite a bit but were very quick to deny that everyone was exaggerating and that they didn’t want you to see them as sex-thirsty animals.
Which is why you completely dismissed Sangmi’s statement in favour of arguing against it. “Actually, that’s not true, people on campus just tend to dramatise and sexualise everything about them.” You sighed. “Guys, I swear, it’s not like that. I think they just need a genuine friend.”
They exchanged looks again.
“So, you’re telling me,” Daniel started, scepticism dripping from his tongue, “you haven’t even thought about them in that way.”
“No.” Your answer was firm and clear, so they didn’t doubt you for even a second. Deciding to move on, the four of you left the building and got into Daniel’s car as you sent him the address of the house.
But what you said was one hundred per cent, without a doubt a lie. Of course, you had thought about them in more than a platonic way. It was hard not to, especially with the way they treated you.
You couldn’t deny the way your breath hitched every time Wooyoung leaned a little too close.
Or how at peace you felt when you sat in the library with Seonghwa, revising notes from a linguistics lecture until you fell asleep and woke up in his car with his jacket draped around you.
Or how you couldn’t help but feel all giggly and silly every time Jongho walked through the door of your bookshop.
Or how your throat suddenly went dry when you rode shotgun in San’s car, his hand flying to your thigh to keep you steady after a particularly abrupt break.
Or how appreciated you felt when you entered Yeosang’s café and he started making your drink without you having to order it, having memorised and perfected it to your tastes based on his observations.
Or how your face felt so warm when Yunho kept you company as you picked out jewellery.
Or the pull of attraction you felt as soon as you caught sight of Mingi, his aura so intriguing with looks to match.
Or how completely seen how felt when Hongjoong indulged and participated in your rambling of music and art throughout most of the drive.
During this drive, however, you knew no one would have those conversations with you. Both of the guys in STEM courses—Minseong took biology and Daniel took Mechanical Engineering. Both of them completely messed up their sleep schedules and regretted all their life choices very thoroughly. And Sangmi, while she did have to work with music a lot as a dance major, she didn’t care about it or think about it as you did.
Soon enough, the car slowed to a stop a little down the street of the house. Despite this, as soon as you got out of the car, you could already hear the music in the distance. The sound of which only got louder and louder the closer your group got to the building, beats resounding through your bones.
Inside there were far more people than you expected, already feeling warm as bodies swayed and danced around you. Trying to remember the layout of the house, you squeezed your way through the crowd and into the kitchen area which was thankfully less crowded than the entrance hall and living room. It was also the only place actually illuminated by the ceiling lamps, they had set up some kind of projector that lit up the rest of the house a dark blue with specs of light.
Daniel was still behind you, talking to you though you couldn’t hear him through the loud noises surrounding you as you both poured yourself your first drinks of the night. Ten minutes later and you had downed five or six shots of soju and were feeling reasonably lighter and more carefree. Between your shots, you made sure to take a few gulps of water and have bites of pizza from the counter in hopes to make your hangover the next day a bit lighter.
Daniel disappeared into the crowd and when you looked into the living room, you caught brief glances of Sangmi already dancing with the girl she had been telling you about for the past three weeks. Minseong separated from you as soon as the four of you stepped into the house, on a mission to go find his boyfriend. So, all on your own, you took one more shot poured by some shirtless guy on the opposite side of the counter, downed the rest of your water, and made your way to the heart of the party.
You weren’t sure how much time you spent in the living room, your phone having been handed to Minseong since he was the only one staying sober tonight and you didn’t want to risk losing anything. Eventually, you got tired of the sweatiness as people nudged and rubbed and danced. You had yet to see any of the boys, so you decided to walk around in hopes of finding one of them.
Knowing Hongjoong was deejaying tonight, you knew he must be somewhere in the living room as well, so you shoved your way to the back end. True to your suspicions, he stood behind a makeshift DJ setup as he talked with Mingi, both of them holding red solo cups in their hands and occasionally taking sips. A giddy smile overtook your face as you skipped over to them.
Sneaking up behind Mingi and hoping his body was large enough to hide you from Hongjoong, you quickly wrapped your arms around his waist, burying your face and giggling into his back. You felt him freeze beneath your touch as Hongjoong let out a chuckle.
“Hey, I’m sorry but–” he peeled off your hands and turned around, cutting himself off when he saw you. “Oh.”
You stepped into the space next to him so Hongjoong could also be part of the conversation, Mingi’s body following you as he continued to stare. Hongjoong was faring much better. Both their jaws dropped ever so slightly as they took in your appearance.
He’d never tell you this, but Hongjoong and Seonghwa both had a thing for corsets. So, when the blue-haired man saw through the opening of the white shirt and finally noted the fact you were wearing one with a waist chain, he couldn’t help but let his eyes flit over you hungrily.
“You guys look great!” You shouted over the music, words slurred together as the alcohol began taking effect.
Mingi collected himself, grinning as he slung an arm over your shoulder and pulled you closer to him. “We could say the same for you, princess.”
As his words registered, they both watched with adoration twinkling in their eyes as you looked up at him and giggled a “thank you” and covered your blushing face with both of your hands. The three of you conversed, though neither of the men could tear their eyes away.
Much to Mingi’s dismay, you eventually removed yourself from him and moved to step away from them in general. “I’m gonna go find the other guys. Do you know where they are?”
They both thought for a moment. They had two options; tell you they didn’t know and hope you stayed with them, or tell you what they knew and watch you leave. Finally, they settled on the latter option, not wanting you to get disappointed.
“Yeosang is upstairs making sure people aren’t fucking in our rooms,” Hongjoong laughed, “If you go upstairs and he’s not in the hallway, try checking the third room on the left.”
“Thank you, Joongie!” You went up to him, hugging him briefly and pressing a quick kiss to his cheek before turning and disappearing up the stairs.
Yeah, the latter option was definitely the right choice.

Pairing : Idol!Song Mingi x F!Reader TW : mingi being mean ; reader is a smoker (don't smoke it's bad!) ; breakup ; fluff at the end ; Word Count : 2.3k Request : Anonny : Can I request something angsty but like kinda cute/fluff with mingi plz? like he calls the reader clingy or annoying or smth like that plzzz A/N : MY FIRST ATEEZ REQUEST THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I LOVE YOU TOO!!! I HOPE I DO YOU RIGHT WITH THIS!!
Today was special, it was an anniversary of sorts, not the usual anniversary though. It was the anniversary of the first day that you had seen each other. It’s been exactly two years since the two of you walked by each other on the sidewalk, taking a moment to pause and look at one another before continuing to where you both had to be. Most people wouldn’t think much of it, people passed each other on the street every single day… But you and Mingi were special, you both knew that you wanted one another, it was just a matter of getting to each other, and you did, two years later and you were both as happy as the day he had first asked you out and you had said yes. Some people were just fated to be together, and that’s exactly how you felt about him.
“Happy Anniversary!” You cheered as soon as he walked through the front door, placing down the piping bag full of icing and skipping over to him, wrapping your arms around him and giving him a tight hug. You loved when he came home, the bright aura that seemed to just surround him and light up every single room he walked into. “I was in the process of decorating the cake, and dinner is already done. Do you want to help me finish up?”
“Not right now… I just want to relax for a bit.” He patted your back, and the feeling was really awkward considering it felt more like what a friend would do with another friend. It wasn’t even a hug. The situation in and of itself was really unnerving, he had never turned down the opportunity to help you decorate the anniversary cake. He had always told you that was his favorite part. Maybe he just wanted to spend some time relaxing with you after work, that always seemed to calm him down when he had a particularly bad day.
“Well let me just clean up real quick and then I’ll meet you in the-”
The loud huff that escaped his parted lips had you pausing, his jaw was clenched tight as his fists balled up at his sides. “I don’t want you to. I just want to be alone, and that means being away from you too. You’re so clingy… So annoying… It’s like you’re constantly just… Crawling under my skin I can’t get rid of you.” His hands ran over his face as his head fell back, his eyes finally catching a glimpse of the anniversary banner that hung above him, and the sight of him underneath it only seemed to make his words hurt worse. “And it’s not our fucking anniversary…” He grumbled, his arm reaching up to yank down the banner. “Grow up.”
You were too stunned to cry, too stunned to really do anything at all. You simply watched him walk over to the bedroom, only flinching slightly when the door slammed shut behind him. As everything that had just happened began to process in your mind, you skipped completely over the part where you’d be upset about it and went straight to being angry. What made him think that he could talk to you like that? It shouldn’t matter how bad his day was. You’re his girlfriend, you were only trying to help him feel better.
“Good god, you really suck at listening, don’t you?” He grumbled loudly when you walked into the bedroom, his head propped up on the pillows as he scrolled through the channels on the tv. You rolled your eyes as you went to the closet, pulling out your suitcase before tossing in your jackets that were hanging up. “Oh! Good, I’ll finally get a fucking break.” He commented as he watched you pack your things, and the comment was enough to have you standing up straight to look at him.
“Yeah, you will. Enjoy your break.” You snapped back at him, and it almost seemed like he was enjoying it, the smile on his face that usually brought you so much happiness now only irritated you further. “Happy Anniversary… I’m breaking up with you.” You said firmly, and for a moment it looked like his smile wavered, his eyes widening for a split second as he looked at you. It’s not like you expecting him to beg you to stay, but you thought that maybe he’d want to talk it out with you so that you didn’t leave. So you stood there, and you waited for him to say something, anything… Anything at all to make you take back what you had just said.
“Aren’t you leaving?” Unexpected, it was completely unexpected, but once Mingi was in one of his modes, it was hard to get him out of it. You weren’t going to be a fool and beg him to let you stay. You were better than that, you had more pride than that. This was what he wanted, and you were going to give him exactly that.
You sat on the bench outside of your work, a cigarette hanging between your lips as you scrolled through your phone. It had been three weeks since the breakup, and while you were far from being alright, you were trying your best to at least be okay or at least seem okay in public. Your front page news had been filled for the last two weeks with news on Mingis hiatus, and during his two week hiatus he had tried to text you and call you, asking you to talk to him, but you had ignored him. He wanted you to leave and that’s exactly what you were doing.
Now the front page news was on Mingis return and a potential new song in the works. You still couldn’t wait to hear it, even though you and him weren’t together, it didn’t mean that you didn’t love their songs, and you still supported the rest of the guys and wanted them to do amazing.
You clicked on the link and took a drag from your cigarette before holding it between your fingers, letting the smoke pillow out of your parted lips as you skimmed over the words on the page. “Hey…” You heard the voice in front of you, and then you glanced down at the shoes that were almost toe to toe with yours before shaking your head, not even bothering to look up at the person.
“Sorry man, this is my last one.” You lied, and you knew it was wrong to lie, but cigarettes were also extremely expensive and you couldn’t afford to just give them out. The cigarette was plucked from between your fingers and you gasped loudly as your head whipped up, your mouth already open, as if you were revving up to go off on the man, that is, until you saw who it was.
“I thought you quit.” Mingi commented as he looked over the stick before dropping it to the ground and stomping it out. It had been one of the things he was most proud of in the relationship, helping you slowly but surely break your addiction. He had believed in you, he had so much faith in you, and that alone is what had been the strongest push to get you to put them down completely. Knowing that he was going to be there with you, it had helped you immensely… But he wasn’t there now. All you had were the cigarettes to fill the void that had been left when he told you to leave. “Don’t you know how bad they are for you?”
You scoffed as you pulled the pack out of your purse and lit up another one, blowing the smoke off to the side away from him before looking up and flashing him a smirk. “Yeah, you know… I grew up and I did a lot of research on the damaging side effects of being a smoker… But… I’m also grown up enough to be able to not give a fuck.” You pushed yourself up off the bench, taking another long drag and deeply inhaling the smoke, and it’s not even like you had wanted another cigarette right now, it was more so that you wanted to piss him off, you wanted to hurt him. “Aren’t you leaving now?”
His eyes narrowed at the blatant use of his own words against him, the way you so snarkily said them. “No, I’m not.” He said flatly, taking the cigarette from between your lips now and snapping it in half before letting it fall to the ground. “You’re being ridiculous.”
“I’d rather be ridiculous than clingy and annoying. You can stop breaking my cigarettes though, some of us don’t make as much money as you do.” You adjusted your purse strap on your shoulder, sighing heavily as you stared at him. “Look, we broke up, you can leave me alone now.”
“I don’t know who this we is… But I didn’t break up with you. You broke up with me but I didn’t agree to that.” His arms crossed over his chest as he looked down at you, the bucket hat that he was wearing shadowing his eyes just enough that you could barely see them, but the slight up turn of his lips let you know that he thought he was being smooth. He wasn’t.
“You asked if I was leaving, you seemed pretty okay with us breaking up when I said it. Don’t come to my work acting like this when you know damn well that we’re done.” You were trying to keep your composure, you knew that if things got too loud that people around you would notice. The last thing you wanted was to be bombarded with pictures and questions about your relationship with him.
“You could have said no. Plus, I thought you’d just be gone for a couple days, a week tops. I even took a two week hiatus because I thought you’d come back and we could talk about things, so I could apologize for being an ass.” So that’s why he was out for two weeks. You wondered if the rest of the guys and management knew that that was the reason or if he lied and told them he wasn’t feeling well. A breakup doesn’t seem like a very good reason to take such a long break and you were sure that management wouldn’t see it as a valid reason either.
“Save it.” You said flatly, taking a deep breath and letting it out loudly through your nose. “We’re through, we’re done, it’s over. I have to get back to work now and I’m sure you do too. Goodbye.” You turned to leave, only a few steps and you’d be back in the building to clock back in from your break and go right back to working to take your mind off of him and what had just happened.
His fingers wrapped around your arm and pulled you back, and once you had stumbled your way over to standing in front of him, his hands were firmly cupping your cheeks, his lips crashing against yours. “Fuck, you’re so annoying when you’re being hard headed.” He murmured against your lips, and you tried to push him back but his lips were on yours once more, his fingers tangling in your hair. “But I love it. Please keep being annoying, annoy me, cling to me.”
Your nose crinkled in disgust as you pushed against him again. “You’re so stupid… You grumbled, but the kiss, him and his kisses, they just had a way of melting you and making you so soft for him. You missed how they would calm you down and make you feel better instantly.
“Yeah I am… Cause I have nothing in my brain but you, baby. I’m stupid and in love~~” He was so obnoxious and you missed it. You missed him. “So how about you bring your cute self back home tonight and we’ll make a whole new cake for our anniversary? Hmm?” His hands moved down to squeeze your hips, both of your bodies swaying side to side as a twinkle of hope lit up in his eyes.
“Nope.” You said matter of factly and his jaw went slack as he stared at you, his body going still and his eyes blinking rapidly as he tried to think of where he messed up. You giggled softly, pushing yourself up on your toes to kiss him and ease his mind. “I work late tonight, I’ll be back tomorrow morning though.” A loud sigh of relief was breathed out against your face as he pulled you in for a hug, peppering kisses across the top of your head. “Alright, alright! Go take your clingy ass back to work.” You said between little fits of laughter, backing away from him and dropping back down onto the bench.
“Fine~~ I’ll see you later, love muffin!” He called as he continued to back away, bumping into people in the process, but he was so excited that he didn’t care, and he was so damn cute that you didn’t care either, you couldn’t help but continue watching as he walked off. “And no more smoking! I love you, princess! Stay healthy for me! Need my little love muffin to cling to me forever!”
He was the one, the only one in the world who could both annoy the hell out of you and make you feel so at peace at the same time. He was most definitely, without a doubt, the love of your life. You were lucky you had seen him, that he had seen you, and you both were lucky as hell that you had chosen each other because you were sure that you were the only two people in the world that could put up with one another.

Wrong Number
Tumblr media
Request: Can I request n° 14 from your prompt list with shownu or woozi pls 🥺omg I love your works 💗💗
Prompt:
14) You accidentally send a text meant for your ex to the wrong number. Your bias replies.
Pairing: Seventeen Woozi x Reader
Genre: Fluff
Song rec as you read: Still Here (Acoustic Ver.) - ATEEZ
.
Chewing on your lip, you stared down at your phone screen, tapping it lightly whenever it began to dim. All you had to do was hit send.
You read the message over and over again, trying to determine if it sounded like you were trying too hard. After nearly ten different variations of the same message, you deleted it all again and settled for something a little more profound.
Hey :)
Was the smiley face too much? You didn't want to seem too eager. Maybe you should - shit, you brushed against the send button.
Flying into a bit of a panic, you decided it would be the best course of action to send another message.
It was really good seeing you yesterday! I hadn't expected us to bump into each other, but I'm glad we did.
You took a deep breath before tapping send again.
That was a little better. If he had deleted your number, at least now he could figure out who you were via context clues.
Leaning back into your couch, you wished the cushions would simply swallow you up. You were mortified with your increased heartbeat. How could you let yourself get so worked up over a guy who had broken up with you?
And it wasn't a delicate breakup. You had been seeing him for nearly a year when he decided to tell you (through text you might add) that it simply wasn't working out anymore. He was your first real boyfriend since coming to Seoul, so you could admit that part of you would always hold a soft spot for him.
That's why, when you bumped into him at a cafe yesterday, you couldn't stop your stomach from plunging to your toes. He was still just as beautiful as you had remembered. Asking for his contact information felt like a fever dream now. At some point in your post-breakup anger, you had deleted any of his information that still lived in your phone. To save face, you told him you lost all of your contacts after getting a new device.
You couldn't quite remember if he had mentioned meeting to catch up or if it was you, but you left the experience in a daze. It took you hours to talk yourself into taking the plunge and sending that text. Now all there was left to do was wait.
It had been only minutes before you heard the high-pitched ding.
Vulnerability was not your strong suit. Even something as simple as allowing yourself to hope was a dangerous route to go down, so you tried to squash the optimistic butterflies that sprang up in your stomach before they could take flight.
Steeling yourself, you finally looked at the screen.
wrong number
You jerked backward as if you had been slapped. Maybe he hadn't picked up on the context clues after all.
It's Y/N. You gave me your number, remember?
Surely you hadn't dreamed up the entire interaction. He must not have been expecting you to actually text. Well, that stung a bit.
You flinched as your phone dinged an instant later.
still wrong number
You double checked the contact you had texted and felt your face grow flush. Your stomach felt hollow. Did your ex seriously give you a fake number?
Just so we're clear...this isn't a joke...right? This really isn't Jae?
Typing bubbles immediately appeared.
nope. sorry.
You blinked dumbly at the screen. God, how could you have been so stupid?
..
Woozi tilted his head as he glanced at the screen. When he had read the first message, he automatically assumed his number had been leaked again. It wasn't a common occurrence, but it was known to happen on occasion. After the second message came through shortly after, he narrowed his eyes. He hadn't even left his studio yesterday.
"What's up?" Hoshi asked, shifting to sit up from his lounging position on the couch.
"Wrong number," Woozi muttered, placing his phone face down beside his keyboard.
"Weird," Hoshi hummed.
Woozi's phone vibrated again, causing him to sigh.
"I thought it was a wrong number," Hoshi chuckled.
"I did too," Woozi grumbled, typing back a quick response. He had no idea who Y/N was or how they got ahold of his number, so he was certainly not who they were looking for.
After his phone vibrated again, he let out a small huff.
"What is going on over there?" Hoshi laughed, now moving to hunch over the shorter member's shoulder.
"Nothing," Woozi said shortly, attempting to set his phone back down before Hoshi snatched it from his hand.
"Aw," he clucked, holding the device high enough into the air that Woozi knew he would look ridiculous trying to jump for it. "Well, that's sad."
"Yep," Woozi groaned. "Now give it back."
"Wait," Hoshi chuckled, now typing quickly on the screen. "I need the tea."
"You need the what?" Woozi asked, now increasingly annoyed. Choosing to make a fool of himself after all, he began to hop around Hoshi, tugging at his arms in a futile attempt to get the phone back.
"The tea," Hoshi clarified. "Let's live vicariously through someone else's misery."
"I have enough of my own," Woozi groaned. "Now give it back."
"Ooooh," Hoshi said, spinning so his back faced the other man. "Jae is the ex-boyfriend."
Woozi rolled his eyes. "Why do you care?"
"Oh my god, he gave them this number," Hoshi gasped. "He ghosted them and doxed you in the process."
"Doxing requires them knowing who I am," Woozi sighed, crossing his arms. "And it sounds like all of this was just a coincidence. Now, please give me my phone and leave me alone."
"Fine," Hoshi pouted, dropping it into Woozi's palm. "Party pooper."
Shaking his head, Woozi plopped back into his desk chair and went back to work. After a few minutes, he had completely forgotten all about the person who had texted him and brought their misfortune to his doorstep.
Or at least he thought he did.
After hitting a wall while creating a new song, he looked idly around the room in search of inspiration. This was the hardest part of his job, having to work around the writer's block.
Lifting a brow, his gaze settled on his cell.
Flipping it back over, he tapped through it aimlessly before finally settling on the chat that Hoshi had continued.
who's jae btw???
Hoshi and his need for unnecessary punctuation.
He's my ex-boyfriend. He said this number was his. Prepare yourself for any other jilted lovers that might be heading your way.
Woozi shook his head. Why couldn't people just be straightforward with each other?
ugh that's the worst. i'm so sorry.
It was the worst and Woozi was sorry. That didn't mean that he wanted Hoshi to continue the conversation.
Thanks :) I appreciate that. I'll stop bothering you and crawl back into my hole now.
Woozi set down his phone and turned back to his screen. He had been in his share of unsuccessful relationships and seen plenty amongst his members. In none of those situations had something like this happened before.
Clicking through various windows for a few moments, he heaved a deep sigh before grabbing his phone again. Before he could think better of it, he began to type.
you doing ok?
It was short and not too invasive. He wasn't looking for any new friends, but he could at least be a decent human being. Plus, this could be just the inspiration he needed to continue his song. Heartbreaks were always a hit.
...
You squinted blearily into the darkness of your bedroom.
you up?
Chuckling to yourself, you turned the brightness down on your phone before responding.
Lee Jihoon, you DID NOT just send me a "u up?" text.
The response came shortly after.
i used "you" not "u." give me some credit.
Rolling your eyes, you settled back into your pillows with a smile. It had been about a month since you had purposefully texted your ex, while accidentally texting Woozi. You hadn't expected for anything to come out of the situation and there was definitely no way that you would've seen this turn of events coming.
You liked him. Against your better judgement, you were crushing on a complete stranger that happened his way into your life. At this point, you had exchanged countless texts, hours on the phone, and photos of your day. Woozi worked a lot, so on occasion, you would even sit on FaceTime and work quietly together. Just having each other for company was comforting in a way that you hadn't found with another person in quite some time. It had all been a bit of a shock, but you complimented each other well.
On several occasions, you had attempted to meet up, but life was hard for both of you. With Woozi's schedules, it was difficult to stay on the same square in the calendar. Admittedly, you had been the one to cancel once or twice as well, but the time had finally come. You were supposed to meet today.
Which made Woozi's text all the more concerning.
Is this the part where you have to cancel on our plans today?
You glanced at the time, noting it was still the early morning hours. Either he hadn't gone to bed yet, or he was waking up much too soon.
ye of little faith.
i'm not cancelling. i'm just not sleeping well.
You lifted a brow. Normally, he wasn't one to be prejudice against a sleeping situation. Since he got so little of it, he often could fall asleep anytime, anywhere.
That is, unless his brain was working overtime.
What's got your brain going this time?
You waited only seconds.
you
You inhaled sharply. Woozi was generally a direct person. Getting him to talk about his emotions, and more specifically, his opinion of you, was a bit more difficult though. Sometimes he was able to speak in such a straight way that it caught you off guard. Other times, he relied on the soft, quiet moments in between to really convey how he felt.
Me?
This time, he typed for a while.
yes, you i'm probably only saying this bc i can be a coward behind a keyboard BUT i'm nervous about today in a good way but...another part of me is scared that we're putting each other on these pedestals that are much too tall. how can reality actually reflect the image of you that my mind has created?
You sniffed in amusement.
It would have been much easier to say you're scared that this is too good to be true.
The typing bubbles appeared and disappeared several times. You knew he was going to come back with something sassy.
i don't do "easy" well, y/n
He had that right.
Rolling over onto your side, you chewed your lip. You could easily admit that you probably had an idealized version of Woozi in your head. It was hard not to when you got to see the best parts of each other every day. That being said, it didn't mean that that image was wrong. It just wasn't factoring in the darker side of his personality. Everyone had one and you wouldn't fault him for being human.
It'll work out. We both know that there's still so much to learn about each other. We just need to be patient and have a little faith.
He hearted your response before his own appeared.
my y/n. so wise.
Your heart fluttered at the simple words. Seeing him acknowledge that you were his made you feel full. You knew you were right. Everything would work out fine.
....
Spinning your phone around on the tabletop, your brain warred against you. Maybe this was a bad idea.
Unlike most people your age, you had never met with someone from the internet before, let alone a stranger you had accidentally texted in a fit of love sickness. Woozi had insisted that he had never done anything like this before either, so that brought at least a small amount of solace.
Plus, everyone you had ever met had been a stranger at one point.
And Woozi really hadn't been what you would consider a "stranger" for some time now.
You looked up from the cafe table for the hundredth time as someone entered.
Still not him.
Taking a deep breath, you nodded to yourself. Everything would be alright. You had told Woozi as much this morning. Now it was time to believe it.
"Hey stranger," a familiar voice hummed from above you. Glancing up, you met the shining, dark eyes you had only ever seen on a phone screen. It felt surreal.
"Jihoon," you breathed, a smile stretching across your lips.
"Well, come on," he clucked, motioning for you to stand. You did as directed, nearly forgetting to breath as he wrapped you in a quick hug.
"Sorry," he said, pulling away almost instantly. "I should've asked if you were okay with physical affection. Are you?"
You nodded weakly, trying to find a coherent thought through the cloud of Woozi's scent. He didn't smell strongly of anything aside from clean laundry, but it was enough to catch you off guard. He was in front of you, looking gorgeous and smelling comforting. It almost felt impossible.
"You sure?" he asked, his mouth hitching up at the corner. He slid into the seat across from where you were sitting.
Plopping dumbly back into your own seat, you shook your head. Get ahold of yourself, Y/N.
"Sorry," you croaked. "I'm just trying to...uh...wrap my brain around...well, you."
Woozi smiled, his cheeks going slightly pink. "I know what you mean."
Glancing around the cafe, he set his hands in front of him. "Let's just wait a moment...to take everything in?"
You nodded, immediately allowing yourself to look at him directly. His cuteness definitely transferred to how he looked in person. He wore his hair as you usually saw it, dark, long, and slightly wavy. He had a solid jawline and a cute, button nose (the deadliest combination). His shoulders and arms were much wider and more muscular than you had expected, which was both attractive and terrifying.
Overall, he was breathtaking.
He seemingly refused to look at you though. Continuing his search around his surroundings, you noticed his fingers slowly begin to creep toward yours. Halting before they got to their destination, he deigned a glimpse your way.
"You were right," he said quietly.
"That's good to hear," you grinned. "But what about?"
Finally placing his hand on top of yours, he gave it a gentle squeeze. "I wanted this before, but now that I have you in front of me, I want to know everything. The pedestal was high, but you're still sitting on top of it."
You were positive you were about to short circuit. Who just walked around saying things like that?
"Who would have thought," you managed. "That I would have an ex-boyfriend to thank for giving me the wrong number."

Tumblr media
The rain is cold against your skin.
You look up at the sky through your transparent umbrella. Swirls of pale gray cover the horizon, blurred by drops of rain sliding down the plastic material. It was darker earlier - the rain will stop soon.
The bus stops in front of you, its brakes squeaking. You close your umbrella and get on, sitting where you usually do, at the back, next to the window. Placed between your legs, your umbrella is getting your jeans wet, but you don’t care. You close your eyes, letting the music in your ears soothe you. You’ve been taking the same bus route everyday for years, so you know exactly how much time you have before your stop. It’s not like you’re afraid of falling asleep, anyway. You never sleep in transportation, and it’s not like your mind has been able to rest easy recently.
Your playlist transports you through melancholic melodies, pianos and violins lulling your senses. Your favorite songs do not let you forget the ache - they remind you of it, softly, tenderly. That’s what you want, anyway.
You’re not interested in forgetting. You just want to heal.
When you open your eyes, your stop is a minute away. You press the button and get up, ignoring the inevitable looks of the other passengers on the bus. People are always staring. Always judging. Often, you care. These days, not so much. You can’t control them, what they do, what they think. They’ll see the shadows under your eyes, the pale skin, the chapped lips, and they’ll tell yourselves, she isn’t sleeping much. She looks terrible. She must be going through something.
So what if I am, you want to tell them? Aren’t we all?
When you step off the bus, it’s barely raining anymore and you decide not to open your umbrella. You let the rain slide through your hair, against your hands. You’re so cold but you’re used to it. You haven’t been able to warm up in a while. The rain feels good, actually. It makes you aware of your body, of your skin. As you walk towards your apartment building, you tilt your head backwards and let the rain fall down your cheeks like tears.
Daylight has almost vanished when you unlock your apartment door, and you step inside with a sigh. You’ve grown to hate this place so much, but there is nowhere else to go. You should look for another apartment, but moving seems like an insurmountable amount of shit to go through and you just don’t have the energy. Maybe in a few weeks. Maybe in a few months. Maybe.
You start by taking a shower, the boiling hot water contrasting with your icy cold skin. You wash your hair, apply lotion. Your movements are slow but you get there eventually. Wrapped in your bathrobe, you open your closet and stare at your clothes. It’s not that you hate them, you just have no idea what to choose. You’re not going someplace fancy, so you end up slipping on a simple pair of jeans and a warm sweater.
You should probably eat something, but your stomach is in a tight knot. There will be food at Yeji’s place, anyway.
As you check your phone and realize you still have some time before you have to leave, you let out a long sigh and sit on your bed. You’re not sure you really want to go, but your friends organized this movie night a while ago and they are excited for it. Yeji’s place is perfect for it - she has a projector, which allows the movies to play as wide as the wall. Everyone has been tasked to bring their favorite snacks and drinks. It’s going to be a chill night, and you’ll be happy to see your friends, but everything feels exhausting.
You promised you were going to be there. So you will go.
It’s not like they will bother you, anyway. They all know you pretty well, although some more than others, but they are all aware of what is going on with you. No secrets to have. Still you don’t want to be a bore, and you know you’ll do your best to smile throughout. It’s not that they want you to - but you’ll still do it. It’s just who you are.
At least he won’t be there. Yeji said he wouldn’t - had plans already, apparently. It would be okay if your ex was there - actually, you’ve seen him a couple of times already since your breakup. But you need to be in the right mindset - and today you aren’t, so it’s good he’ll be absent.
You let out a long sigh and stand up to dry your hair.
You apply simple makeup, a bit of eyeliner, some mascara. You put on your favorite necklace. You decide to wear perfume. Little things to make you feel better, like you aren’t crippled inside, like you don’t have a decaying organ in your chest. It’s recent, that you’re able to do that. A week ago you would’ve showed up in sweatpants and messy hair.
Little steps.
As you grab a tote bag to fill it with the snacks you bought yesterday, you get a text from Yeji.
Everything okay?
Come anytime <3
She’s checking up on you and you’re grateful for it. Not a lot of people do, not even your closest friends. You don’t blame them - you haven’t been good company and sometimes it’s hard to find the right words. Some of them have been anxious that your breakup with San will mess up their friend group, and in fear of seeming like they’re taking sides, they just decided not to say anything. They take care of you differently - but sometimes you hate that they can’t talk about it with you.
Yeji doesn’t do that. She’s been there for you at every step - and it’s not because she blames or dislikes San. It’s just different for you and her, because your friendship not only goes way back when your friend group got together, but also way beyond.
Leaving in 5, you text back, and she sends a heart emoji.
Once you’re ready, you slip on your jacket and stare at your reflection in the hallway mirror. You look your normal self, except for the obvious exhaustion on your face, and the slightly vacant look in your eyes.
You can do this.
You won’t let your stupid, broken heart define you or your life.
Tumblr media
When you get to Yeji’s, she pulls you into a tight hug. A few people are already there - Jeongin is already snacking on a huge bowl of popcorn, talking to Lily, who’s on her phone scrolling down Pinterest boards. Changbin and his girlfriend, the newest addition to your friend group, are bundled up under a blanket on the couch and wave at you.
You follow Yeji to the kitchen, putting the cans of soda you brought in the fridge, adding your snacks to the pile on the counter.
“You look really pretty,” Yeji tells you with a smile. “Is that the sweater we got together the other day?”
“Yeah,” you nod. “I’m still not sure about the color, though.”
“No, it suits you. I promise.”
You give her a sincere smile as she empties a bag of potato chips in a bowl. It’s quiet in the apartment, but you know it won’t last very long - except for Changbin, the loudest people have yet to arrive.
“How was work today?” Yeji asks.
“Fine,” you shrug. “Boring.”
She gives you a long look.
“You know you don’t have to stay there, right? You can find something else. With your skills it would be easy -”
“I know, Yeji,” you say in a low voice. “But not right now.”
You play with your nail polish, chipping a small piece from your thumb.
“Right now boring is good,” you nod, your voice a little more firm. “When I can focus more, I’ll look for something else. Promise.”
She smiles, taking your hand to give it a squeeze. “I just don’t want you to waste away where you don’t belong. You’re worth so much more.”
“I appreciate it.”
You put your head on her shoulder for a second as Jeongin’s laugh resonates through the apartment. It’s a sweet and familiar sound, and you start to believe it was a good idea to come.
Grabbing the filled bowls of potato chips, you and Yeji join the others in the living room. You sit down next to Jeongin, who quickly shows you the funny puppy video Lily has shown him, and you giggle at the screen. As Yeji starts to set up the projector, the door opens on a few more of your friends and you know it won’t be quiet anymore.
Chan, Jisung and Minho are yelling about something, raising the volume of the conversation a million dozen decibels, and you shake your head at the sight of them. Chaotic and loud as they are, even in your state you are grateful for them, because whatever the circumstances they can always make you smile, or, at least, provide welcome distractions.
They drop down in the remaining spots, either on the couch or the floor, Minho diving his hand down Jeongin’s popcorn bowl and Jisung arguing with Changbin about the type of beer he bought - of course, as usual, Jisung’s only answer to Changbin’s complaint is a simple traitor.
“THIS AGAIN…” Changbin yells at the top of his lungs.
You can’t help but smile. That game has been going on since Changbin moved out of his apartment with Jisung and Chan to move in with his girlfriend - Minho took his spot since, and there really isn’t any bad blood between them, but Jisung loves to remind Changbin how he abandoned them.
“Hey, Y/N,” Minho says, sitting down between you and Jeongin. You took the spot at the end of the couch, a blanket covering your legs. “How’s it going?”
“I’m okay,” you say with a smile. “What about you?”
“Fantastic. Did you check out that link I sent you?”
You start to talk a little - you and Minho work in a similar domain and it’s always nice to exchange ideas and anecdotes. You find yourself immersed in the conversation, the noise of all your friends chatting and laughing mixing into a background noise you can’t get enough of - it definitely helps the black hole inside your chest. You don’t feel so cold, you don’t feel so empty. You know it won’t last, and reality will catch up to you quickly, but for now you allow yourself to relax.
“Y/N.”
You turn towards Chan, who has stopped at your level. He’s smiling kindly at you, looking a little tired - but that’s nothing out of the ordinary. Like you, Chan barely sleeps. Neither of you can stop the ceaseless train of thought in your heads - while you stare at the ceiling, Chan works.
“Hey, Channie.”
“You want something to drink?”
“Yeah, maybe a soda.”
“Cool, coming right up.”
“Oiiiii, what about me?” Minho whines.
He asks for a can of beer, followed by Lily who has finished her previous one, and soon everyone is yelling at Chan to bring them something to drink. He closes his eyes, taking a deep breath, and you chuckle.
“Let me help you,” you say, standing up. “Y’all are lazy,” you add, squinting your eyes at your friends.
Their protests all tangle together and you laugh, following Chan to the kitchen.
Tumblr media
Your friends.
They are all precious to you, all in their own way.
But Chan. Chan.
The first time you met him you felt your heartbeat accelerate because he looked so damn charming. A kind smile, eyes like stars, and an energy that immediately soothed you. It did not take long for you to develop a crush on him. How could you not? He was kind, funny, talented, and smart. He truly cared for the people in his life and never broke a promise. Handsome, too, of course. The kind of guy that made you weak in the knees, that sent your thoughts reeling whenever he touched you.
Your crush had always been one-sided though, which was fine. You had quickly worked to overcome your physical attraction to him and made it a priority to develop your friendship. Because Chan understood you. You found yourselves exchanging looks and agreeing on similar things often enough so that one day, you sat down next to him during a party to ask for advice and you ended up talking for hours, forgetting to get drunk like everyone else.
You are not particularly close. You don’t know everything about each other. You mostly see each other with the rest of your friend group - rarely alone. You don’t text each other everyday - in fact, you barely do. But he’s a steady presence in your life, a friend you rely on, and you know it’s the same for him.
Tonight, you’re especially grateful for him.
Chan gives you a smile as he opens the fridge.
“I like your sweater,” he says, handing you a pack of sodas.
You put it on the kitchen island, smiling.
“Thank you. I like your earrings. Are they new?”
You’re used to Chan wearing his silver hoops, but today he’s sporting a simple black dot on one ear, a small lightning bolt on the other.
“Yeah, I felt like a change,” he nods. “They say it’s good for us, right?”
“I guess,” you answer simply. “It suits you.”
“Thanks.”
You exchange smiles, gathering all the desired drinks slowly. You glance at him sometimes, at the angle of his nose, at the dark curls that brush his ears. Your crush on Chan eventually faded away, although never entirely. You have just buried it so deep inside you sometimes you forget it is there - you haven’t thought about it for a long time.
Then again, your heart has been entirely occupied by San.
Heart.
Body.
Soul.
All of which lay in pieces, now.
Chan must see the shadows in your eyes, because he frowns a little, looking intently at you.
“Is something wrong?”
You shake your head, trying to shake the bad thoughts away at the same time.
“No, no, don’t worry.”
Chan gives you a smile and a short nod, although he’s still frowning. He can feel you don’t want to linger on it - you hope he knows it’s not that you don’t trust him. Besides Yeji, Chan is perhaps the friend you trust the most.
You remember every single hug he’s given you.
Always so warm.
Always at the right time.
He probably doesn’t know some of them gave you the strength to hold on. The most recent one, about two weeks ago.
Tumblr media
“Can I have another one, please?”
The barman gives you a nod and turns to prepare you another beer.
Besides you, Yeji gives you a long look. “Don’t you think you’ve had enough?”
“Just one more,” you tell her, lifting an index.
She smiles, throwing an arm around your neck. She keeps a close eye on you - that’s why you feel comfortable to indulge in another drink. You need it, after all. Since your breakup with San, you’ve barely touched alcohol, choosing instead to drown in snacks and utter isolation.
So for your friend, it’s a step forward that you’ve agreed to come tonight.
It’s just you, Yeji, Chan and Jisung. A quiet night at the local pub.
A few beers, a board game.
When you have a new full pint, you and Yeji head back to the table and sit down. All of you decide to play another game, and Jisung starts shuffling the cards, telling you some dumb joke. You know he’s doing that to make you feel better, and it works. You find yourself smiling so much your cheeks hurt a little.
You place your head on his shoulder, affectionately, and cross Chan’s gaze. He’s smiling, too, fondly.
Your friends are talking and your heart hurts so fucking much.
You miss San. You’ve fallen out of love a long time ago, you now realize, but it’s still painful. You have to start over. You have to find yourself again. It’ll be long work - but you’ll do it. And as you look at your friends, you think to yourself they will make it easier. You’ve been drinking a little, and the emotion swells in your chest.
“Y/N, don’t cry!” Yeji cries out, noticing the tears on your cheeks.
You have not even realized you are crying. You touch your skin in surprise, letting out a giggle.
“Awwww, no, honey,” Jisung says, drawing you in his arms.
He rocks you like a child and you laugh as more tears drip down your eyes.
“I’m sorry,” you say. “I love you guys so much.”
“Nooo, you’re gonna make me cry too,” Yeji cries out, taking your hand.
“I know it’s not… Not easy for you, because San is your friend, and…” You sniffle. “I don’t want this to be difficult for you.”
“Don’t say that, Y/N,” Jisung whispers. “We’re your friends, too.”
“We’re here for you,” Chan nods.
Crying and laughing at the same time, your friends decide to keep playing to get your mind off of things. You’re grateful.
Yeji wins, of course. She always does. Once all your beers are finished, you agree to go. Chan will drive Yeji home - he’s only had one pint. Jisung lives close to you, so you decide to walk together.
You say goodnight to Yeji. She places a kiss on your cheek, squeezes your hand. Chan draws you into a hug.
It’s so loving. So steady.
It takes the breath out of your lungs.
“I love you, Y/N,” he says in your ear. “I’m here if you need me.”
You’re too dumbstruck to reply. But you know you’ll remember those words for a long time.
Tumblr media
You do.
You still remember the words - you can still hear them.
He’s here.
He loves you.
Like a friend, of course.
But that is more than enough.
“Y/N?”
Chan’s voice brings you back to the present. You shake your head and chuckle.
“Sorry. I was just lost in thought.”
He nods, biting his lip nervously. “By the way, I wanted to ask. There’s this concert next -”
That’s when you hear the door open - followed by a voice.
His voice.
Your blood freezes in your veins, and you stare dumbly at Chan, unable to move.
You feel like bursting out in tears. No, no, no.
Not him, not tonight.
You feel Chan’s eyes on you. Yet, you don’t really see him. He delicately puts a hand on your wrist.
“Y/N…”
You try to gather your thoughts. You should’ve prepared, just in case. You feel so stupid. Of course it was all going too well.
You’re startled when Yeji bursts in the kitchen, puts her hands on your shoulders and seeks your eyes.
“Y/N, I’m so sorry, honey -”
“What the hell?” you hear Chan mutter next to you. “I thought he wasn’t supposed to come.”
“He wasn’t,” Yeji hisses. “I swear, he told me he couldn’t.”
“Fuck’s sake, this dude…”
You close your eyes and take a deep breath.
Slowly, you look up at your friends, gathering a smile.
“It’s okay,” you say, your voice clear. You take Yeji’s hands in yours, nod at her. “I’m fine.”
“Y/N…”
“I’m fine,” you repeat. “I’ll be fine.”
You look at Chan next, and you feel like your heart will burst out of your chest. There’s something in his eyes you can’t identify, a spark that is also a shadow. He’s frowning, his body slightly bent towards you, like he’s about to pull you into a hug. You clear your throat and nod, praying to all you can not to let your voice tremble.
“It’s all right,” you say. “He’s our friend. He should be here.”
And to some degree, you mean it.
Yeji gives you a tight hug, and you can hear Chan let out a long sigh from behind you. You can’t linger on it - you have to focus on yourself.
Stay calm. Breathe.
You can do this.
The breakup was hard for the both of you, you remind yourself. You loved each other, you really did, that much you’re sure of. San was never that good of a liar. You have a much more vulnerable nature than him, which was always a source of conflict between you, but you know your breakup affected him. You remember the tears in his eyes. The vein in his neck, pulsing, as he held them back. You remember the way his hand clenched yours. The way his words came out broken from between his teeth.
It’s over, isn’t it?
You fell out of love.
It happens.
You take a deep breath. You still want San to be your friend. You’ve agreed that you would try, and you intend to follow through on your words.
You take a step to follow Yeji back to the living room, but Chan puts a delicate hand on your shoulder. You turn around, plunge your eyes in his. You’ve always thought of them as a haven, a night sky full of stars, both deep and bright.
He stares at you with a clenched jaw and a furrowed brow. He smells as he always has, a smell you’ve wanted on your pillow for so long - and it still makes you slightly dizzy although you know there’s no chance with him.
“If at any moment you want to go home, tell me, yeah?” he whispers to you. “I’ll drive you.”
You’re a little entranced by the soft lines on his full lips and the way his low voice scrapes - but you manage a nod, after what feels like a long second.
“Thank you.”
He nods, gives your shoulder a squeeze and lets you go. The warmth of his hand lingers there, and it gives you courage to move forward.
San has already taken a seat next to Jisung and glances at you when you walk into the room. Your friends are kind enough to keep the conversation going, so the room doesn’t fall silent, but your heart sinks at the bottom of your chest.
Because San doesn’t look tired. He doesn’t look sad.
In fact, he beams.
Eyes sparkling.
New clothes, new watch.
A smile so wide it slices right through your heart.
Fuck, he looks so happy.
You have to bite your tongue so you burst out crying. You stagger a little bit, but Chan is right behind you and it prevents you from falling back. His warmth, the voices of your friends, everything makes it better.
“Hey,” you manage to say, although you’re not sure how. “You look good.”
“Thanks, you too,” he tells you, but his voice is distant. His eyes are too, like he doesn’t even see you anymore. Not like he did before.
It’s abundantly clear - your ex has moved on.
It’s not that you still have feelings for him - you just need time to grieve what you had. San was a huge part of your life for a long time, and suddenly he isn’t there anymore. That absence, that void, that’s what is difficult to deal with. Being so goddamn alone all the time. No one to make you feel loved. No one to love, either.
You’re still putting yourself back together.
You’re still healing.
Not him. He’s done it.
You should be happy for him, and in a way, you are. You’re not mad he’s moved on. But it happened so quickly. It hasn’t even been two months. You were together for more than a year. Maybe you’re jealous, maybe you’re bitter. But mostly it hurts.
How long is it going to take you? Why are you so goddamn sensitive?
You breathe out and help Chan bring everyone their drinks. San’s laughter is a haunting melody and you can’t wait for the movie to start so you can think about something else. You take your previous seat, and Jeongin rubs your back affectionately, offering you the bowl of popcorn.
Chan sits at the opposite side of the room. Pathetically, you wish he was still next to you. Instead you focus on the images that start playing, projected on the white wall in front of you. It’s a movie you’ve already seen, but that’s ok. It’s not like you can really focus, anyway.
Because all you can see is San. Funny, clever, happy. You know him, you’d know if he was pretending, but he isn’t. He’s liberated. It’s the only word that comes to mind. You wonder for how long you’ve been bringing him down. If he realized it and hated you for it. If he couldn’t wait to get rid of you. If he was just looking for an excuse and -
You close your eyes and put a stop to the intruding thoughts.
No. It wasn’t like that.
Was it?
You don’t know anymore.
You barely follow the movie because your thoughts keep spiraling. Around you, your friends are chatting, making jokes, and commenting on the movie. Jisung’s laugh is so loud it takes over sometimes and you take refuge in it. But your heart feels frozen in place, in the middle of two beats, unable to go forward. You stare into nothing. You don’t even touch your soda. The popcorn, either - so you hand it back to Jeongin. His presence feels good, too.
You hate yourself for being unable to live in the moment. For letting your mind wander like it is, dizzy and unkind.
In the movie, people say what they think.
In the movie, loving doesn’t seem so hard.
In the movie, it doesn’t rain.
It’s a blessing and a curse that everyone is watching the movie, and that you’re sitting in the corner, in the dark. Your eyes are filled with tears and suddenly one escapes and slides down your cheek. You fidget in your seat, faking a yawn to wipe it away. You pull the blanket over your trembling body. You laugh when the others do, although it’s heartless. Nobody notices - or so you think - and it’s a good thing.
You try to focus on the movie. It’s entertaining, it’s funny, and for a minute, maybe, you succeed in feeling better. Then you see, from the corner of your eye, San pulling out his phone. He stares at the screen, and in the dark, its blue light illuminates his face. He smiles at it and types a few words. You know that smile. Fuck, you were that smile, once.
You clench your jaw, hard, and wanting to look away you accidentally fall into Chan’s eyes. He’s looking at you, and although you can’t see his face very well in the darkness, you notice the worry in his eyes. He doesn’t smile, he doesn’t say anything - but you hear his silent question. You need to go?
You shake your head slowly, forcing a smile. I’m fine. I’m fine.
He nods. He doesn’t believe you.
You stand up on shaky legs and head to the bathroom. Once you close the door, you don’t even open the light. You wouldn’t be able to stand the sight of your own reflection. You just breathe out, breathe in, and then breathe out again. The tears fall down your cheeks, warm. They taste bitter on your lips.
Why can’t you be like him? Why can’t you move on, be happy?
You take a few minutes to collect yourself. It’s fine - you don’t mind seeing San. It’s good, if, unlike you, he’s able to rebuild himself. It’s all you wish for him, and you know it’s all he wishes for you, too. He’d probably be honestly sad to know you aren’t doing well. You can never tell him, of course. You’ll pretend as well as you can - you can’t allow yourself to be vulnerable with him for now. You’ll keep it for yourself, shamefully, selfishly.
It will be fine.
You’ll get over it. He did, so why not you?
Once you feel ready, you head out the bathroom, and Chan is there, leaning against the wall.
“Oh, shit, sorry,” you chuckle. “I didn’t realize someone was waiting. Did you -”
You stop as Chan puts his hands on your shoulders and pulls you to him. You fall into his arms, and you’re a little shocked so you don’t move at first. Still, Chan holds you there. You stammer.
“C-Chan, I’m okay, you don’t have to -”
“Y/N,” he says, and there’s something about the way he whispers your name that makes your heart ache. “I saw you crying. Please. You don’t have to hide.”
Gently, you let your head fall against his chest. He hugs you a little tighter.
“We’re friends, aren’t we?” he whispers. “You don’t have to hide.”
You nod. He said it in such a way, you don’t know what it is.
You are friends.
You’ve been for a long time.
Despite your crush on him, despite the awkward period where he was aware of it but didn’t say anything, despite all of that, you are friends.
But Chan has always been more than that for you.
Chan is a pillar, Chan is a mess.
Chan is both the lighthouse and the storm.
You like the feel of his arms around you. The way his chest moves as he breathes. The texture of his t-shirt.
Oh, God. Not again.
You can’t let your crush come back running. You’re just sad. You’re just lonely. It wouldn’t be fair to Chan, would it? He’s your friend. He’s not a pretty face you can choose to lust over whenever you’re lonely.
Don’t do that to yourself, Y/N.
Don’t do that to him.
Chan is your friend and he is only trying to be here for you.
“Do you want to go home?” he whispers in your hair.
You take a deep breath and nod. Chan takes a step back, smiling kindly at you. You do the same, although it’s a little faint. He bends his knees slightly to be at your height, gently rubs your cheeks to remove the tears and replace your hair.
“Let’s go, then, love.”
You don’t have time to gawk at him for using a nickname he’s never said before, because he turns and waves at you to follow him.
He tells your friends you’re feeling a little sick and he’ll drive you home. You say there’s the flu going around at the office, and you hate lying to your friends, because you know some of you will believe you and some won’t. Right now you don’t really care - even if they all knew it was a lie, they wouldn’t judge you. You make sure to not avoid San’s eyes and smile at him. You don’t want him to start asking questions.
You get your things. Yeji gives you a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek, making you promise you’ll text tomorrow. You nod, squeezing her hand and glancing at your friends. There will come a day when you’ll be yourself again.
You just need time.
Time and a lot of courage.
Tumblr media
When you step outside, with Chan right behind you, you realize it’s raining again. You look up at the sky, now a profound black painted by hints of grey clouds. You run to his car, the rain heavy and cold.
The car is clean and smells nice. Chan pulls back his hoodie, starts the engine and drives away as you look back at the apartment building. You wish you were stronger.
“I know what you’re thinking,” Chan says, one hand on the wheel, the other tapping on his thigh to the rhythm of the song on the radio.
“Do you?” you tell him with a smile.
“I do,” he nods, matching your smile. “You’re telling yourself you should be stronger.”
You gawk at him, feeling both embarrassed and scandalized. He shrugs.
“Didn’t I ever tell you I can read you like an open book?”
“Tsk,” you retort. “Wasn’t that when we played Mafia?”
“Whatever applies to Mafia applies to real life.”
“Not sure that’s true.”
“This is.”
You glare at him and he does the same, playfully. You feel much more relaxed now that you’re here. It was always easy to talk to Chan - never does that change, whatever the circumstances. You are much alike in that you tend to put others before yourselves, often at the sacrifice of your own feelings. For some reason, though, that didn’t work between you. The walls immediately fall apart.
“So I’m an open book, huh?” you say, staring at your hands.
“To me, yes. When I have my eyes on you.”
“And you had your eyes on me tonight?” you ask without thinking.
“Of course,” he answers, stopping the car at a red light. “I stayed sober, kept a close eye on you. Just in case.”
You wince. “Just in case I started crying hysterically or made a scene?”
He shakes his head, looking at you. The red light reflects on his face, enveloping the car in its hue. The rain thumps on the car in soft sounds. Chan’s dark hair is messy on his head, charmingly curled at the tips.
“More like in case he did something,” he eventually says.
“Why would he?” you ask with a frown, assuming he’s talking about San.
“Well…” Chan sighs. “He can be a dick sometimes.”
You’re surprised by his words - you never would’ve thought that Chan disliked San. On all accounts, they are good friends. Chan chuckles nervously at your look, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Sorry. I know you were a thing for a long time, but… It’s just what I think.”
“Did he do something?”
Chan shrugs. “It’s just a feeling. Never really did anything. Except breaking up with you, of course.”
You scoff. “He’s an asshole for breaking up with me?”
“Yeah,” Chan stammers. “Just - like - who would ever let a girl like you go?”
His words don’t make a lot of sense to you. They come to you muffled, as if you are plunged in a dream or in a drunken state. You honestly can’t believe your ears.
“What are you -”
He quickly waves his hand, looks away from you to the road ahead - and fortunately for him, the light turns green, so he has a good excuse to change the subject.
“Don’t mind me. I’m just rambling.”
You really don’t want to let this go. Your heart is racing, and you honestly wouldn’t know San’s name if someone was to yell it in your ear right now. All you can see is Chan, his tightened jaw, gripping the wheel of his car, driving you home. His words echo in your head, and you’re trying to put everything together.
Did you miss something? Clearly, Chan has something on his mind, an itch he can’t scratch. Have you been so intoxicated by your grief and sadness that you blacked out? You haven’t been a good friend, that much you know. You just wanted to feel better, first. You were of use to no one feeling this sad and broken. But Chan’s agitation has clearly been there for a while. How long have you been this blind?
You open your mouth, trying to find the right words. Chan, what is going on?
Chan, are you angry at me?
Chan, please, tell me what’s on your mind.
You sigh in frustration. You’re silent for a while, your thoughts spiraling, and just when you’re just about ready to ask, your phone rings. You glance at the screen instinctively, and San’s name is like a slap on the face.
Are you okay? he asks in a text. Tell me when you get home.
Hints of your boyfriend. Remnants of the past. The text feels like a ghost is speaking to you. It makes you angry. It makes you ache.
You might not love San anymore, but you miss him.
“Are you okay?” Chan asks.
“Yeah,” you nod.
You’re about to say you’re fine, which has become an automatic response, but you remember what Chan said. I can read you like an open book. So instead, you take a deep breath.
“It’s San,” you explain. “He’s asking me if I’m okay and to text him when I’m home.”
Chan scoffs, and there is nothing amiable in the sound. “The guts on this guy,” he mutters. “I’m literally driving you and he knows that.”
You frown, sensing the anger in his voice.
“Seriously, Chan, did something happen between your two?”
Chan shakes his head. He doesn’t want to look at you.
“Chan,” you insist. “Tell me, please.”
He lets out a sigh, gripping the wheel tighter.
“We might’ve had… an altercation.”
“An altercation?” you repeat. “Like a fight?!”
“Not a fight,” Chan sighs. “Not a physical one, anyway.”
“What the fuck happened?”
The words escape your mouth. An uneasy feeling washes over you. Nobody has told you about this. Nobody has said a word.
“When did this happen?” you ask when Chan doesn’t answer.
“Like… a week ago, I think.”
“Why didn’t no one -”
You interrupt yourself and close your eyes. Looking out the car window, you realize you’re already parked in front of your apartment building. How did it go so fast?
For how much longer are you going to keep losing track of time?
“Chan,” you say, your voice shaking. “Please tell me what’s going on.”
He looks at you with timid eyes. They shimmer in the darkness but you can’t focus on them. You are trembling and you can’t hold on to a single clear thought. Your mind is a blurry mess.
Chan looks out through the window before he takes a deep breath.
“I didn’t want to do this tonight. You need to rest, you -”
“If you don’t tell me now, I’ll never be able to sleep, so it will be worse.”
You feel your hands shaking, so you clench your fists. Outside, the rain accelerates, pounds loudly on the car. The sound is almost unbearable but you don’t care.
“If you’re trying to protect me, I’m grateful,” you add, when you see he’s still hesitating. “But I can take it. I’d rather know.”
“I don’t want to hurt you,” he whispers, his voice quivering.
“We’re friends, right?” you tell him. “That’s what you said. Be my friend, Chan.”
He sighs and rubs his eyes. You’re scared, and yet a part of you feels perfectly calm. You hate the fact that something was hidden from you, but you’re so ready to withstand whatever storm is heading your way.
You’d rather stand in chaos than into nothingness.
At least the chaos makes a little sense.
“Before I say anything…” Chan sighs. “I don’t want you to take any of this on you, yeah? I know you’ll feel bad, but please, just remember -”
“For fuck’s sake, Chan,” you say with a nervous laugh. “Get to the point.”
“He has a girlfriend.”
You stare back at him.
“What?”
“San. He has a girlfriend. I thought it was too soon, that it was disrespectful of you, so I told him and it got heated, but… Yeah. Shit. I’m sorry, Y/N.”
It’s like the rain suddenly got quiet.
A girlfriend.
You should’ve known. You saw it, after all. The phone, the text, the smile. The happiness in his eyes. The trendy clothes, the new watch. All the hints were there.
He has moved on.
More than you expected.
Everything happens quickly. Your body acts before your brain registers it, and in the blink of an eye you’re outside in the pouring rain. You slam the passenger door behind you, you forget your bag, you don’t even think about it. You just walk forward.
It’s bitter cold.
In seconds, you’re drenched.
Your knees feel weak and you’re sure you are going to fall.
A sob escapes your throat.
It shouldn’t hurt that much.
You hate your heart.
You hate how vulnerable it is.
You want to move on, too.
“Y/N!”
You turn around, halfway to the door of your apartment, to find Chan running towards you. You raise your hand slowly. It’s shaking like a leaf.
“It’s fine, Chan. I’m f-”
“Stop saying that!”
You’re a bit surprised at the sudden anguish in his voice. He stops inches away from you, getting soaked by the heavy rain. It slides down his cheeks like tears, strands of dark hair sticking to his forehead. He looks at you fiercely, his eyes blazing with light.
“I’m sorry, I just - I see you’re hurting and it’s killing me.”
You don’t know what to tell him. You wish he would go away. You wish he would hug you. You wish the pain would just stop.
“Y/N -”
“I don’t care!” you scream, the sound getting lost in the rain.
Chan frowns.
“I don’t care if he has a girlfriend,” you cry out. “I just…” You shrug, your eyes lost in Chan’s. “I just want to heal, too. I want to move on, too. I’m sick of being sad. I’m sick of hurting.”
There is such despair in Chan’s face you can hardly bear it. You wish you could tell him not to take the weight of your pain on his shoulders, but you know him better than that. He can’t help it. That’s why he’s here with you.
“You just have to give me time,” you say, your voice falling apart. “I’ll be fine eventually.”
He lets out a sigh, slides a hand through his drenched hair. A raindrop slides down his face, gets caught on his lips.
“Please, let’s go inside,” he pleads. “Let me be here for you.”
You hesitate, but the cold rain keeps you on your toes. You want to be home, in your own space, but you also don’t want to be alone. So you nod, and Chan lets out a sigh, thanking you in a whisper.
Tumblr media
When you step inside your apartment you’re a little shy to turn on the lights because it’s messy, but you can’t really be bothered about that right now. Chan waits on the other side of the door, a hesitant look on his face.
“Come in,” you tell him.
He nods, closing the door behind him. Your place is modest, just big enough for one person, situated in the semi-basement of the building. It does not get much light, but it feels cozy and it is cheap.
The first thing you do is get a towel for Chan so he can dry his hair and his clothes. He hangs his hoodie on a hook near the door; luckily the t-shirt underneath is only damp. His dark blue jeans took the worst of the rain. You suggest giving him some dry clothes, but he insists he’ll be fine.
You tell him to get comfortable and go to change in your room. Your limbs feel weak as you slip on a pair of sweatpants and a crewneck. You cannot stop thinking about Chan's words.
San has a girlfriend.
He has opened his heart to love again.
The rain keeps falling.
It’s time you heal.
When you come back to the living room, Chan is anxiously staring at his phone. He puts it away when he sees you, smiling a little timidly.
“Feel better?”
“Yeah,” you nod. “Want a drink?”
“Sounds good.”
You give him a gentle smile and you both head to the kitchen, where you fill two glasses of soju. He takes one, clinking it against yours. You drink it in one go.
“Now that feels better,” you sigh.
Chan smiles at you fondly, and you nudge his arm.
“Chan. It’s all right. It had to happen.”
“So quickly, though?” he winces.
“We all heal at different paces,” you say softly. “Or maybe it’s his way of healing. Either way I’m happy for him.”
Chan leans one elbow on the kitchen counter, giving you a long look. You hold his gaze, confused at the sudden calmness you feel.
“You said you can read me like an open book,” you remind him, pouring yourself another drink. “Am I lying?”
He smiles briefly. “No.”
“Cheers.”
He takes another sip, and you imitate him.
“How about we sit down?” you propose.
Once in the living room, you sink into the couch. Chan sits at a comfortable distance, twirling his glass between his fingers. It’s strange to see him at your place - because of the size of your apartment, you rarely have friends over. You remember him driving you home a couple of times, but he must have been inside only once or twice in the three years you’ve lived here.
You talk a little, about everything and nothing. You drink some more, perhaps a little too much, but the soju warms your body. Chan relaxes, too. The bottle is quickly empty.
You both fall silent, and you stare at the bottom of your empty glass. The tears come back too easily.
“Chan?”
“Yeah, love?”
You peck your lips. Hearing him say that feels too good. It’s so new, but you already don’t want him to ever stop.
“Is she pretty?” you utter.
“Y/N…”
“She must be. Pretty and smart.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Do you know her?”
You look up, and Chan shakes his head. His hair is untidy, his cheeks a little red, his full lips as inviting as ever.
“I don’t. Ji told me they met at a party.”
You let out a shaky sigh. “So everyone knows?”
You hate the way your voice shudders, but you can’t help it. Chan shuffles closer to you, gently taking your hand in his. It’s warm and familiar.
“No,” he answers in a soft voice. “Just a few. We wanted to wait for the right moment - well, actually, I thought San should be the one to tell you.”
You laugh, wiping your tears. “No offense, but that would’ve been worse.”
Chan snorts amusingly. “Oh. Good thing it didn’t happen, then. I thought it’d be a good idea.”
“It’s a terrible idea.”
You both end up giggling, and Chan doesn’t let go of your hand. You sniffle. You don’t let go either.
“Don’t take this the wrong way,” you say. But why are you so invested in this?”
“In your breakup?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m not invested in your breakup,” he shrugs. “I’m invested in you, you’re my friend.”
“But it’s - you don’t have to, you can just be like the others, not take a side, you don’t have to fight anyone.”
“Why wouldn’t I speak out? It bothers me, you know me, I don’t shut up when it comes to people I care about.”
“But San is your friend, too.”
“But you’re -”
You frown. “I’m what?”
“You’re Y/N.”
The tenderness in his voice takes you by surprise. It seeps through his lips, echoes in his eyes. You feel your heart twist and turn - and just like that, his fingers slip away from yours.
“Sorry, I…” He closes his eyes, shakes his head. “Hell, I’m doing it all wrong tonight. And I should really stop drinking. How the fuck am I supposed to drive back home?”
“Chan, wait,” you say, ignoring him. “What are you trying to say?”
He sighs heavily. His face falls in his hand, and he breathes there for a second before he looks back up at you. He looks so tired.
“I know you had a crush on me,” he breathes.
You smile nervously. “Why are you bringing this up?”
“Because I have a crush on you, too,” he says.
You blink, and it’s like the world tilts. You haven’t been drinking that much, it can’t be the soju. Still, you feel dizzy and warm. Chan is looking at you with fondness and anguish.
He didn’t say had.
He said have.
His words are right there, still on the tip of his tongue.
In his eyes.
So damn bright.
No - he’s here because he’s your friend. That’s it.
Isn’t it?
“I don’t understand,” you breathe out.
“I never acted on it because San had wanted to ask you out for a while,” Chan explains with a shrug. “And you know me. I never put myself before others. And although I sorta knew you had a crush on me, I convinced myself San was better for you.”
You look down at your hands, feeling completely overwhelmed.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” you whisper.
“Because you were so happy with him,” Chan says, his voice shaking. “You found each other and it was good, and who was I to say anything? At one point it didn’t even matter anymore, and I buried it deep inside of me, told myself I was over you. You were over me, after all. It was just a crush, anyway. I was so sure you’d be in this with San for the long run.”
So did I, you want to say. Your throat feels so dry, however, you can’t say anything. You can just stare at Chan. He smiles at you almost carefully.
“When I heard about your breakup… Everything came rushing back. The other night, after we got drinks, and I saw you crying… I was just so worried about you. So gutted to see you hurt, it was almost unbearable. And then he said he found someone else and I couldn’t understand, and we argued. It was heated, but it’s fine now. We’re good.”
You close your eyes because the world can’t stop spinning. You were so cold earlier, but now you’re almost sweating. You’re too warm. The world is ablaze.
Chan is your fire.
“I’m not saying I’m in love with you. I can’t say I am. But if I let myself go…” He stumbles on his words. “I just might.”
Time has stopped. You can barely breathe.
You feel the sting of shame.
The delightful warmth of Chan’s confession.
You’ve been so blind.
“You just mean so much to me,” he says, his voice both low and soft. “I just want you to be happy. I just want you to be loved as you should be loved.”
When you open your eyes, it feels like he’s sitting closer to you although he hasn’t moved. He’s not touching you, but his smell overwhelms your senses. You can’t look away, and he watches you back.
“How I wish I could,” he breathes, his eyes drilling into yours. “Fall into you. Show you how you could be loved. ”
You drink his words like they’re the essence of life. You feel, in each one, a wish, a hope, a possibility. Ropes that were drawn and never knotted together. Lifelines, waiting to be grasped.
“I never was,” you breathe.
He frowns. “What?”
“Over you,” you explain. “I never was over you. I’m not.”
He closes his eyes.
“Fuck, Y/N, don’t tell me that.”
“It’s true,” you say, voice trembling. “I loved San, of course I did. But you were always in my heart and you will never not be.”
Chan’s eyes drip down your eyes to your lips. You feel an ache inside your chest. It’s like it’s starting to rain indoors. What an odd feeling.
“You don’t love him anymore?” he asks carefully, weighing every word.
“No.”
Your voice comes in a whisper, but it’s full of certainty.
“But Chan, I…” You swallow. “I can’t - I can’t listen to what my heart says about you, it’s not fair, you’re not… You’re not a stand-in, you’re not - you’re more important than that, and…”
“Can I kiss you?”
The question catches you off guard.
“Just once,” Chan smiles. “I want to taste your lips. Just once.”
What could you say to that? How many times did you dream about Chan’s lips on yours, wondering what they felt like? Were his kisses kind, delicate, hungry? You’d see him drink whiskey and wonder if the taste would linger on them. You’d see him kiss another girl and picture yourself in her place.
And now he was offering you a kiss.
Hell, he wanted to kiss you.
So you find yourself nodding, and Chan takes a long look at you, as if he’s waiting for you to change your mind. You remain immobile, lips parted, awaiting his. Slowly, he plucks them, grazing them against his - and they sink into yours, soft, like a cloud, deep, like the ocean.
You collapse in his arms, wrapping yours around his neck. He slides his fingers through your hair, his other hand embracing your waist to pull you closer. You can’t hold back a sigh from escaping your lips, and Chan responds by kissing you deeper, the movements of his lips getting almost feverish.
“Chan,” you moan when you gasp for breath.
“Fuck, I can’t stop,” he growls, placing small kisses on your lips.
His fingers dig in your skin, and you desperately want to disappear against him, so you move your leg so you can straddle him. Chan wraps himself around you, and you feel the dampness of his clothes but you don’t care. You take his face in your hands, plunging back into a needy kiss. Chan’s hands wander on your back, on your hips, on the back of your neck. You can only lean into him. His tongue teases your lips and you open your mouth to let it in. It plays with yours, and you can feel walls tighten.
By now you are fully making out, your hips grinding against his. You can feel him getting hard, and it sends your mind reeling.
“God, you’re so perfect,” he moans around your lips.
“I’ve thought about this so often, Chan,” you admit.
“Same,” he grins. “I… Fuck, I can’t tell you this.”
“Tell me,” you insist, trailing kisses alongside his jaw, on the delicate skin of his neck. It makes him shudder, and can almost feel his cock pulsating under you.
“I thought about your lips,” he breathes out. “Your body. How you would sound moaning against me…”
“Fuck, Channie…”
You clench at his words, pressing your core on his erection. He grunts, his fingers slowly making their way under your shirt. You tug at his, and suddenly, like a flash of lightning, you realize what you are doing. Your heart skips a beat, and your mouth dries. Everything rushes back. You stop, and he does the same, leaning back.
He looks more attractive than ever with his hair tousled by your fingers, his full lips red and wet from your kisses.
“I’m sorry, I just -”
“Is this going too fast?” he asks you gently.
You hesitate. “It’s not that. I just - I don’t want to give the wrong impression.”
Chan frowns. “What do you mean?”
“Like you’re just a rebound or something,” you shrug.
Chan smiles - that cheeky grin of his, his eyes sparkling at the same time. It toys with your heartstrings. How could anyone not adore this man?
“I don’t care,” he answers. “I’ll be your rebound.”
“Chan, I’m serious,” you sigh.
“So am I,” he says, twirling a strand of your hair around his index. “If it’s something you want, then I’m here. I want to. And it doesn’t have to mean anything tomorrow, or ever. We’ll always be friends.”
You breathe out, briefly closing your eyes. All you want is to keep kissing him, to forget the world in his arms. To be desired, to be loved.
It’s all you want.
But your heart still aches.
So much has happened tonight - you feel so heavy.
You sigh again. “I just… Fuck, I’m sorry.”
Chan cups your cheek.
“It’s okay, love,” he says, placing a kiss on your forehead. “It’s all so fresh. I can leave if you -”
“No,” you quickly interrupt him, pushing a finger against his plush lips. “Please. Stay with me.”
Chan nods, his eyes not leaving yours. You should move. You should get going - get a glass of water, sleep it all off. But you can’t move, lost in Chan’s gaze, your body a bundle of nerves. You lean forward, settling your forehead against his.
“It’s killing me,” you chuckle nervously.
Chan giggles, and the sound is delightful. “We have time, love. I won’t let you go, now. I got you.”
He places a soft kiss on your lips.
“If you’ll have me.”
As an answer, you give him another kiss. You slide your fingers through his humid hair, inhaling his scent.
“Will you sleep here tonight?”
“I’m here, baby.”
The word makes something melt inside of you. You shiver, and instinctively, he sprawls his warm hands on your back.
You’re overwhelmed by the tenderness and the hurt.
You feel so loved.
So abandoned.
So alone.
So supported.
So seen.
Your lips find him again like a magnet. You kiss him deeper than before. You’re losing your mind.
“Y/N,” he breathes in your mouth.
The words escape your lips. “Fuck it, I want you.”
He groans, his fingers diving in your skin. His cock twitches under you, making you lose all sense.
“I want this, Chan,” you sigh, biting his lip. “But I don’t - I don’t want you to think I’m using you, all right? You’re my friend, I care about you, I -”
He laughs. “You can use me all you want.”
He starts kissing you again, feverishly, as if it hasn’t just been a few seconds since he last did it. You arch your back, closing all distance between your bodies. Chan starts placing kisses down your neck, his tongue teasing your thin skin.
“I’ll make you feel good, baby girl,” he whispers. “I’ll make you forget for a little while. Do you trust me?”
“Yes.”
“It’s just you and me tonight. Let the rest fade away.”
He puts his strong hands on your ass, and slowly moves it. You sway your hips, and the friction of his erection against you makes you moan softly. You plunge your face in the crook of his neck, kissing his shoulder blades.
“Just you and me, yeah?” he whispers.
“Just you and me,” you nod.
In a swift move he removes your shirt, groaning at the sight of your bralette. It’s made of a thin lacy material, so he can perfectly see your nipples, and immediately leans in to brush his lips against them. You shudder, your nails digging in the back of his neck.
He removes your bra to gain access to your breasts, gently massaging them in his hands and sliding his tongue around them. Meanwhile, you caress his cock above his jeans, loving the way he tenses at your touch.
“Hold on to me,” he tells you in a breath.
You wrap your arms around his neck and he lifts you up, only to gently lay you down on the couch so he’s on top of you.
“Let me see you,” you breathe, grabbing his t-shirt.
He obliges, removing the piece of clothing so you revel in the sight of his toned chest. You take off your sweatpants and stare as he removes his jeans as well, giving you a better sight of his athletic body. His boxers do nothing to hide his erection.
“Before this goes any further,” he says, and his voice sounds so raw it sends shivers down your spine. “Do you have -”
“Bathroom,” you say with a nod.
He smiles, bends to steal a kiss and disappears. You look up at the ceiling, suddenly very aware of your nakedness, of what you are about to do.
It feels like you’ve been through ten days in one.
This morning you woke up with dread.
Now you are filled with hope.
Is this going too fast? Should you wait?
Maybe.
You don’t want to.
This feeling in your chest, that Chan helps surge, that threatens to burst - all this light, all this love. It’s been a while since you’ve felt that. From someone else, from yourself.
So what if it’s too fast? You want to live.
And if there’s a person you trust, it’s Chan.
“Got it,” you hear him say as he reappears.
You don’t really know what to say because you have all this love and light inside your chest and words would not feel enough, so you stay silent, only pull him back into a kiss. He lays on top of you, warm and a little unsteady. You can feel he’s a little nervous, just like you, but you don’t mind. You need his softness. You need his realness.
You push his boxers down, feeling his cock touch your stomach. The sensation is enough to clear your mind, and you bite Chan’s lower lip a little. He answers with a slight chuckle.
You want to tell him how crazy he makes you. How nice it is to feel him so warm and hard. How much this means to you. But for some reason, you can bring yourself to say anything, and neither does he. You just breathe together, febrile and eager. His fingers graze your wetness, and you shiver. Sensing your pleasure, Chan applies some pressure on your folds, leaning two fingers on your clit. You arch your back, moaning a little louder than you expected. Your hands reach for him, palming his cock, your own fingers brushing his tip.
“Fuck,” Chan grunts. “Y/N…”
“Channie, please,” you whisper.
“Wait,” he answers. “I want to do something first, if this is my only chance.”
You frown, opening your eyes as you feel him move. You quickly understand what he means, however, as his lips trace a path of wet kisses on your stomach and your thighs. Soon his breath is against your core, and you forget how to breathe.
When his tongue touches you, it’s like a hundred sensations at once, and you can’t hold back a shaky moan. Your fingers grab the couch as Chan pushes your legs further apart. He kisses you, pressing his tongue into you, attentive to your reactions.
“You’re gorgeous, you know?” he says, although you barely hear him. “Keep moaning for me, baby girl.”
A surge of pleasure goes through your body, enveloping you in silk, and you grab Chan’s hair, instinctively pushing him against your clit as his tongue encloses it.
“Fuck, fuck, Chan, I’m…” you whimper.
“Are you coming?”
You nod, and he buries his nose in you, embracing your sensitive spots. Your orgasm makes your whole body tremble against him, and he holds your legs as you do, making sure to accompany you throughout.
As you come down, slowly, you blink back into reality. You look at him a little timidly, realizing your fingers are still tangled in his hair. You place your palm against his head, caressing it tenderly.
“I’m so sorry,” you mutter. “Did I hurt you?”
“Not at all,” he chuckles. “It was beautiful.”
You bite your lip and he moves so he can kiss you. Your taste is on his lips and his tongue and it’s making you a little dizzy.
It’s been a while since you’ve felt as good as this.
Not that the sex with San was bad - but it faded at the same time your love did. When you broke up you had not touched each other like that - barely kissed, even - for weeks.
Although you’re sensitive, you really want to make Chan feel good. You need him inside you, stretching you, making you whole. You align your legs so his cock falls between them, and you grind slowly. His breath hitches against your lips, and you take it as a hint he likes it.
“You made me feel so good, Channie,” you tell him in between kisses. “I want to do the same for you.”
“Fuck, you’re so warm,” he lets out.
“I want you inside me,” you say.
He nods fervently, puts on the condom he got from the bathroom and aligns himself with your entrance. You feel so relaxed and tense at the same time, tucked in his arms on the couch, the rest of the world faded away. He enters you slowly, letting you time to adjust to his size, and you breathe out slowly.
He feels so different. He feels so right. You are a bundle of nerves he unmakes.
He thrusts his hips at a measured, exquisite pace. Each time he goes deeper, and you cry out in pleasure, your fingers digging in the skin of his muscled back. You feel the fever, you feel the want. He breathes heavily against your neck, holding you tight.
“You okay?” he asks in a whisper.
“Don’t stop,” you tell him, arching a little to facilitate his movements.
Chan doesn’t stop. As he makes love to you - because it is what he is doing - you sense his thrusts getting a little more erratic. In the quiet of the living room you hear nothing but the sound of him plunging inside you, his cock smeared by your wetness, his breathing mingling with yours. It is so erotic, so loving, your second orgasm is building quickly and deliciously.
Chan accelerates. You pant, moaning nonsense.
“Come with me,” he breathes, and that is the last thing you need to come undone.
It’s enthralling how your soul escapes you and yet stays right there, against Chan, around him, with him. As you clench around his cock, you hear a delightful moan escape his throat, rough and hoarse, and it keeps you right above the clouds with him as he comes inside of you. You feel him twitch before he relaxes slowly.
His lips find your forehead and he plants the softest of kisses there.
As you sink into the couch, he removes himself from you, and lays down on top of your body. You don’t mind the weight - in fact, it feels just right. His nose is in your neck, his breath tickling your sweat-covered skin. Your fingers slide in his hair, and you close your eyes.
You give yourselves time to recover. As the high fades, you feel Chan’s breathing relax and get more steady.
“Channie,” you whisper with a smile. “Don’t fall asleep.”
“Hm?” he groans, lifting his head to look at you.
With his hair all over the place, his small eyes and swollen lips, he looks ready to pass out. It elicits a large smile from you, and you tenderly caress his cheek.
“Let’s get to bed,” you tell him.
He nods. You stand up on shaky legs, and help him on his feet. Together you close the lights in the apartment, and then you take his hand to guide him towards the bathroom. You take the time to clean up and head to the bedroom. The lights are off except for the fairy lights hanging above your bed. Once you’re there, you open a drawer, take out a t-shirt that will fit him.
You slip under the sheets, Chan next to you. He pulls you into his arms, and you put your head on his shoulder.
The rain has slowed to a drizzle.
Who knows what the sky will look like tomorrow?
For now you just want to sleep against Charm’s warmth.
“Get some rest, love,” he whispers to you.
“Goodnight, Channie.”
“Goodnight.”

[ATEEZ] friends with benefits | hongjoong
➳ genre: smut/suggestive, very light angst-ish? (minors dni!) ➳ ficstyle: bulletpoints ➳ pairing: fwb! hongjoong x reader (gn) ➳ warnings: friends with benefits relationship, very slight smut, masturbation, jealousy, hint of angst pls let me know if there are any missing!
HOW IT STARTED
you two had met at the birthday party of a mutual friend
you two hit it off immediately, growing to be really good and close friends
hongjoong always took extremely good care of you and was always there when you needed him
but more importantly, he was the person who would always boost your confidence and made you feel comfortable with who you are
that was something you loved the most about him
after a rough breakup where your hear was left shattered, hongjoong was the one who put the pieces back together, restoring your confidence and self love
he truly was your rock
one day you were staring at your phone, waiting for hongjoong to text you back about the plans you had made for later
the lack of reply showed you that he was probably busy, after all he was working on a new album
so you headed to the nearest convenience store, grabbing a few of his favorite snacks, and made your way to the company
when you ran into eden, who told you to just head to studio where hongjoong is in, you didn't expect anything out of the ordinary to happen
like usual, you knocked at the door before swinging the door open
you never waited for hongjoong to tell you to come in, he had assured you in the beginning you don't need to
but this time you really wish you did
hongjoongs face was flushed
his hands quickly pulling his pants back up in an attempt to hide the fact that he was just masturbating
for a moment both of you were silent, hongjoong desperately attempting to control his breaths taking over the whole room
maybe it was the fact that the slight glimpse and thought of hongjoong masturbating made you feel a certain way
maybe you were just sexually frustrated
but both of you were taken by surprise when you finally broke the silence
"i can help you with that if you want"
HOW IT WENT
you never laid down any rules
or had an official friends with benefits talk
usually you two would hook up after hanging out
sometimes, when he was especially frustrated, he would text you begging to come to the studio
he would experiment a lot with you and try different kinks as long as you were comfortable with it
would always give you the sweetest aftercare
it may be just because hongjoong cares about you a lot
but the way he cared made you feel things you haven't really felt before
he would be a little more protective than usual
and makes sure you're closer to him at all times as well
the members wouldn't even pick up on it tbh
hongjoong was always protective of you, so they didn't really notice any change
you did though
and so it went on for months
HOW IT ENDED
your friend had the ridiculous idea to set you up on a blind date
when you told hongjoong about it, laughing, you were taking back by surprise due to his serious reply
"i think you should go, give it a try"
was the last thing you expected him to say given his possessiveness and your whole situation
he didn't say any more than that, so you changed the subject
what you didn't notice is how hongjoong had to swallow his pain to get out that one sentence
that one little lie
just because he didn't want to hold you back by being with an idol who could not always give you the proper attention a boyfriend should always give
hongjoong distanced himself from you after that
too consumed in his feelings
you didn't realize why you were so hurt by this sentence until a few days later
when you visited him at a shoot
instead of his usual possessiveness he didn't give you any attention at all
not even when yunho was trying to turn your frown upside down
in your mind, he was too focused on his stylist to even bother looking at you
in his mind however, this is what he needed to do to control himself
and he needed to finally let you go
you were growing more and more jealous just watching hongjoong with the stylist
something that had never bothered you before
ah shit, then it hit you
you fell in love with him
and before you could get your act together, his full name had fallen of your lips, drawing the attention of everyone in close proximity
when you sat down in one of the empty dressing rooms with him, you told him your feelings
and despite his cold look, his heart was doing flips in joy, but also breaking at the same time while he had to rethink everything
would breaking your heart really be better than telling you the truth?
that he simply could not be in a relationship unless you were okay with the burden that comes with dating him?
didn't you deserve someone better?
"we should stop whatever this is" was all he had to say
and he knew he was being cruel
not even looking at you
but seeing your upset and pained face would hurt even more, he needed to go through with this
questions were racing through your mind
did he mean to stop your whole friendship?
were your feelings not serious to him?
you know you fucked up
falling in love with your friend with benefits is not what you should do
but hongjoong wasn't the type to blame anyone for their feelings
you were unsure what to say
wanting to end this conversation as quickly as possible
so you simply nodded and left
everything was unclear for you
you were left with a broken heart and so many unanswered questions
he hadn't made any effort to contact you after this
should you contact him first?
thinking back to where it all started, did you offer your help because deep down you already loved him?
but it didn't matter
because your broken heart that hongjoong had put back together, was now shattered again

You've dreamed of working here for as long as you can remember.
The sleek glass doors of the office parted with a soft whoosh, welcoming you into the polished lobby of your new workplace. The buzz of corporate life swirled around you, the air filled with excitement and the scent of fresh ambition.
Moving through the sea of strangers, your heart raced with a combination of anticipation and trepidation. You were excited to begin this new journey as a graphic designer in this firm.
With each step, the memories of your high school years felt like they belonged to a different lifetime.
But as you approached the elevator, your heart clenched, and your breath caught in your throat. There, just a few feet away, was a sight that you had never expected to encounter again.
His name echoed in your mind, a name you hadn't spoken in years.
Jung Wooyoung.
Your first love and ex-boyfriend.
Time stood still as your eyes locked onto his figure, frozen in disbelief. He stood there, as if conjured from your deepest memories, with a casual elegance that hadn't faded with the years. His dark hair, still tousled in that way you remembered so well, framed a face that had haunted your dreams for six long years.
For a heartbeat, you thought it might be a trick of the light, a mirage in your mind, but it was him—undeniably him.
His gaze was intense, his eyes penetrating yours with an intensity that felt like a thousand emotions, a million words unspoken. His once-familiar features were etched with the passage of time, but they were unmistakably Wooyoung.
Your heart, which had been pounding with anticipation a moment ago, seemed to seize, and for a split second, you felt it might stop entirely. A rush of memories flooded your mind—laughter in the hallways, stolen kisses in the park, and bitter goodbyes.
The joy, the pain, the love—all of it came rushing back.
The world around you faded into a blur, and it was just him and you, standing there in that dimly lit lobby.
"Oh hey, you're early!"
As you reluctantly tore your gaze away from the spot where your ex stood just moments ago, Yunho's cheerful voice brought you back to the present. He was the friendly HR recruiter who had interviewed you prior to your acceptance of this job.
Yunho extended a friendly hand and a warm smile, which you returned, feeling grateful for the timely interruption, "Welcome to Dreamscape Inc.," He said with genuine enthusiasm, "Alrighty, let us get on with your orientation then!"
You nodded, trying to shake off the lingering traces of shock and nostalgia, "Yes, thank you, Yunho."
As you stepped into the elevator with Yunho, you couldn't help but steal a quick glance back toward the lobby, hoping against hope to catch another glimpse of Wooyoung. But he had vanished into thin air, leaving you with an overwhelming sense of loss and confusion.
The recruiter noticed your distracted gaze and leaned closer, his voice lowering slightly, "Is everything alright?"
You hesitated for a moment, then decided to share a fragment of the truth, "I just... saw someone I used to know. It took me by surprise," His eyes held a knowing glint, "Ah, Seoul can be a small world sometimes. You never know who you might run into."
As the elevator doors closed and the car began its ascent, you wondered about the twist of fate that had brought you face-to-face with Wooyoung again. You knew it wasn't a mere coincidence, and deep inside, a sense of anticipation mixed with apprehension churned.
During the orientation, you did your best to push any thoughts of Wooyoung out of your mind.
The day was filled with introductions to company policies, team-building exercises, and discussions about upcoming projects. You tried to immerse yourself in the whirlwind of information, reminding yourself that you were on the cusp of your dream job at your dream workplace.
The past should stay in the past, and now, you should be focusing on your present and the promising future ahead.
As the hours passed, you met your new colleagues, exchanged contact information, and began forming the foundation of your professional network. The friendly and vibrant atmosphere at Dreamscape reassured you that you had made the right choice in joining this company.
Yunho proved to be a valuable guide throughout the orientation.
He introduced you to key team members and offered valuable insights into the company's culture and values. His cheerful demeanour and genuine support helped ease your anxieties.
Amidst the introductions and team-building activities, you made a conscious effort to concentrate on the present moment. You were determined to prove yourself as a talented graphic designer and to make a name for yourself in this competitive field.
As the day came to a close and the orientation concluded, you felt a renewed sense of purpose and excitement about your new position.
You were more than ready to embark on this journey of personal and professional growth. Thoughts of Wooyoung, though still lingering in the back of your mind, were overshadowed by the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead.
The past may have resurfaced unexpectedly, but you were determined to keep it at bay, focusing on the bright future that awaited you at Dreamscape.
A week had passed since you started working here, and life within the bustling design firm had settled into a rhythm of its own.
Thankfully, there were no signs of Wooyoung anywhere.
Perhaps he had been here merely as a client representing another company, or perhaps he belonged to a completely different department or division. Whatever the case, you were relieved not to have to work with him.
The thought of navigating a professional relationship with your ex-boyfriend, with whom you hadn't parted on good terms, was a scenario you didn't even want to entertain.
Things had been progressing smoothly in your new role, and you were already forming strong bonds with your colleagues. The camaraderie and support within your team helped you adapt to the fast-paced environment.
Work had yet to become overwhelming, allowing you to dive into projects with enthusiasm and creative energy.
Your days were filled with brainstorming sessions, design reviews, and collaborative efforts that fueled your passion for graphic design. As you engaged with your coworkers, you appreciated the vibrant atmosphere at Dreamscape, where creativity thrived, and ideas flowed freely.
In the evenings, you often found yourself attending team outings or joining colleagues for dinner and drinks, building not only professional relationships but also friendships that promised to extend beyond the office walls.
Life at the firm was becoming increasingly fulfilling, and you were reminded of the aspirations you had once shared with Wooyoung during your high school years. It was a bittersweet realisation that the dreams you had held back then were now taking shape in a different context, without him.
As the days turned into weeks, you grew more confident in your abilities and more at ease in your new environment.
The past, though it had momentarily resurfaced, felt like a distant memory, overshadowed by the opportunities that the present had to offer. You were on a path of professional growth, and the future was filled with promise.
With how smoothly things had been going, you were quite certain that you might never have to worry about the possibility of seeing or even having to think about your ex-boyfriend again.
Or so you thought.
As you sat enjoying your lunch break with Yunho and your colleagues, Jongho and Yeosang, in the bustling cafeteria, the excited voices of female colleagues from another department caught your attention. Their animated gushing and giggles filled the air, drawing the curiosity of your group.
With raised eyebrows, you exchanged knowing glances with your friends, wondering what could possibly have them so enthralled. Yunho, always the playful one, leaned in with a sly grin, "Well, well, well, it seems like I have some insider information." He teased, enjoying the intrigue he had sparked.
Jongho and Yeosang exchanged amused looks, their curiosity piqued, "Come on, Yunho hyung, spill the beans! What's got everyone so worked up?" The youngest prodded, feigning impatience.
The recruiter leaned in closer, lowering his voice for dramatic effect, "You know the new architect who recently joined our firm? The one who's causing quite a stir?"
Your heart skipped a beat as dread crept in.
Could this really be happening?
It was your ex's dream to become an architect, and you couldn't shake the fear that this popular architect was none other than Jung Wooyoung.
As Yunho negotiated a price with Jongho and Yeosang in exchange for the juicy intel, your mind raced with uncertainty and anxiety. The memories of your past with Wooyoung, the unresolved emotions, and the complicated history that still lingered between you both suddenly flooded your thoughts.
You tried to keep a composed facade, concealing the turmoil within.
The mere possibility that you might have to face Wooyoung again, not as a distant memory but as a colleague, sent shivers down your spine. You wondered if fate was testing you, forcing you to confront a past you had worked so hard to put behind you.
As the suspense mounted, Yunho finally leaned in to reveal the architect's name, and your heart hung in the balance, waiting for the name that could either confirm or alleviate your fears. The name hung in the air for what felt like an eternity before Yunho finally uttered it.
"It's Jung Wooyoung."
A gasp escaped your lips, though you tried desperately to stifle it. Your worst fears had been realised. The architect who had become the talk of the company, the one everyone was gushing about, was indeed your ex-boyfriend.
A flashback to eight years ago swept over you like a tidal wave, transporting you back to a time when your dreams were intertwined, and the world was full of promise.
The stars shimmered above like countless diamonds scattered across the vast canvas of the night sky. You and Wooyoung lay together on a soft, grassy field, your heads nestled on a shared pillow of dreams and ambitions.
His strong arm cradled your shoulders, and your head rested gently on his chest. The steady rhythm of his heartbeat provided a comforting backdrop to your conversation, as if the universe itself were whispering its approval.
You spoke of your dreams, your voice filled with the unwavering determination that only youth could bring.
"I want to become a graphic designer," You said, your eyes tracing the constellations above, "I want to bring stories to life through art, to create something that moves people."
He brushed his fingers gently against your cheek, his touch sending a shiver down your spine.
"And I," He replied, his voice filled with conviction, "I want to be an architect. I want to design buildings that stand as a testament to human creativity and innovation, structures that inspire awe and admiration."
In that moment, under the canopy of stars, you shared not only your dreams but also your hearts. The world felt like an open canvas, waiting for you both to paint it with your aspirations and love. The possibilities seemed endless, and you believed that together, you could conquer anything.
But as time went by, dreams shifted and paths diverged.
The bond that had once been unbreakable was severed, and the scars of your past had taken time to heal.
Now, as you faced the prospect of working alongside the person who had once been your confidant and soulmate, you wondered if destiny was conspiring to reunite you and him.
Back in the present, Yunho noticed your reaction to the revelation about the new employee. He didn't pry or say anything to prevent Jongho and Yeosang from noticing your unease. Instead, he tactfully steered the conversation in a different direction, allowing you some space to collect your thoughts.
You stayed quiet for the rest of the lunch break as your colleagues continued to discuss Wooyoung's fame in the industry and expressed their admiration for his joining the company. It seemed that everyone was thrilled to have such a renowned architect on board.
You found it increasingly difficult to focus on their conversation, your mind a swirl of conflicting emotions.
After lunch, Yunho, understanding the need for a private conversation, walked with you towards your workspace. He looked at you with genuine concern in his eyes and finally broached the subject, "You know, I noticed your reaction during lunch, especially when we talked about Jung Wooyoung. Was he the person you mentioned seeing on your first day?"
You hesitated, feeling a mixture of gratitude for his concern and the anxiety of having to reveal your personal history with Wooyoung. Taking a deep breath, you decided to be honest, "Yes, Yunho. He's... he's my ex-boyfriend from high school."
He nodded understandingly, his expression sympathetic, "I see. That must be quite a shock to run into him again after all these years."
You nodded, your voice barely above a whisper, "It is. We didn't exactly part on good terms, and I didn't expect to see him here, of all places."
Yunho placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder, "I understand it might be difficult for you. If you ever need to talk or if there's anything I can do to make things easier, please don't hesitate to let me know." His genuine concern touched you, and you felt grateful for the support of a friend in this unexpected and emotionally charged situation.
In the days that followed the revelation of Wooyoung's presence in Dreamscape, you were trapped in a constant state of anxiety.
The fear of bumping into him in the hallway or, worse, having to work alongside him weighed heavily on your mind. It felt like an emotional rollercoaster, with every corner turned, you wondered if you'd run into the past you had tried so hard to leave behind.
During this challenging time, Yunho became your confidant and your pillar of support. After all, he was the only one in the company who was aware of your shared history with Wooyoung. The two of you often found solace during your breaks in the pantry, sharing coffee and conversation as a way to alleviate your worries.
On one of those breaks, you couldn't contain your distress any longer.
You sighed deeply and pressed your head into your hands, shoulders slumping with the weight of your anxiety, "What am I going to do when I eventually see him, Yunho?" You confessed, your voice trembling with uncertainty.
Yunho, sitting beside you, instantly shifted to comfort mode.
He gently rubbed your back, a gesture meant to provide comfort in your moment of vulnerability, "I understand how difficult this must be for you," He said, his tone filled with empathy, "But remember, you're not alone in this. I'm here to support you, and we'll get through this together."
You looked up at him, gratitude shimmering in your eyes.
His unwavering friendship and understanding were a source of strength in the midst of your turmoil. With him by your side, you felt a glimmer of hope that you could face the looming reunion with Wooyoung, no matter how daunting it might seem.
And as if the universe had conspired to test your resolve, fate finally decided to bring your past into your present.
It was a moment you had been dreading since the day you found out he worked in the same company, and the timing couldn't have been more uncomfortable. Of course, he chose this particular moment when you and Yunho were so close to make his appearance.
The first indication of his presence came with the sudden clearing of his throat, a loud and deliberate sound that sliced through the air.
Your heart skipped a beat, dread gnawing at your insides.
Wooyoung stood there, just a few feet away, his expression unreadable but his eyes betraying a mixture of emotions. It was clear that the sight of you and Yunho together hurt him more than he had expected. Even after all these years, the thought of you being with someone other than him still held the power to inflict pain.
You swallowed hard, your voice failing you in that moment of unexpected confrontation. Yunho, sensing the tension in the air, also turned to face Wooyoung, surprised.
For what felt like an eternity, no one spoke, the weight of the past and the complexity of the present hanging heavily in the air. The reunion you had both feared and secretly hoped for had arrived, but it was nothing like you had imagined.
"I hope I wasn't interrupting anything."
As Wooyoung's voice broke the silence, Yunho slowly pulled his hand away from your back, the comforting touch dissipating like a fading dream. His discomfort mirrored your own, but he was quick to step in, attempting to diffuse the palpable tension in the air.
Yunho let out a slightly nervous laugh, his eyes flickering between you and Wooyoung as he tried to avoid an awkward confrontation.
"Oh, no, not at all," He said with a light chuckle, "We were just discussing some work-related matters. By the way, have you two met?" He then introduced you to each other, acting as if he wasn't aware of your past with the architect.
You and Wooyoung exchanged a polite nod and pleasantries, both of you carefully concealing the history that lay between you. It was an unusual scenario, having to pretend that you were mere acquaintances meeting for the first time, but it seemed like the safest course of action.
Wooyoung's gaze, however, remained intense, as if he was trying to read something in your eyes, searching for a hint of recognition or acknowledgement. But you kept your expression neutral, mirroring his façade of polite professionalism.
As the conversation shifted to work-related topics, you wondered how long this charade could last and what it would mean for your relationship with Wooyoung moving forward. The past was no longer a distant memory but a living presence in your everyday life, and you had to navigate these uncharted waters with care.
For your sake, Yunho kept the conversation short, wrapping it up quickly and informing Wooyoung that you had an important meeting to rush to. It was a graceful exit strategy, and you appreciated his efforts to spare you from the awkward encounter.
With a polite nod, you and Yunho left the pantry, his hand resting lightly on the small of your back as he guided you out. As you walked away, you felt Wooyoung's gaze following your every step. His eyes bore into your back, and you sensed the weight of his unspoken words, the longing that hung in the air.
Once you were out of earshot, Wooyoung let out a quiet sigh, his heart clenching uncomfortably.
The desire to have a proper conversation with you, to ask how you had been for the last six years, to tell you how beautiful you still looked—it all weighed heavily on him. He missed you more than you could ever know, and he regretted the way things had ended between you two all those years ago.
As he watched you and Yunho disappear around the corner, Wooyoung wondered if fate had given him a second chance, a shot at redemption. But he also knew that healing the wounds of the past wouldn't be easy, and he would have to tread carefully to earn your trust once more.
Seven years ago, you had been on the cusp of adulthood, filled with dreams and aspirations for the future.
You and Wooyoung, once inseparable, had shared hopes of achieving those dreams together. But there was an undeniable change in him during your final year in high school, a growing distance that had puzzled and hurt you deeply.
The two of you had been so close, sharing laughter, dreams, and countless secrets. It was a bond that you had believed was unbreakable, forged through years of trust and shared experiences. But as time passed, his warmth and affection started to wane, replaced by an unsettling aloofness.
At first, you had brushed it off, thinking it was just the inevitable growing pains of young love. But the chasm between you continued to widen, bit by bit, like a silent storm on the horizon. You couldn't pinpoint the exact moment when it had all begun to unravel, but you knew something had changed.
It wasn't until graduation day, a day that should have been filled with celebration and joy, that the truth came crashing down.
Wooyoung had taken you aside, away from the cheering crowd and the tearful farewells of your classmates. His eyes, once so warm and full of affection, were distant and cold. The contrast was stark, and it sent a shiver down your spine as you braced yourself for what was to come.
He cleared his throat, the sound hollow in the otherwise bustling background, "Listen," He began, his voice tinged with an unfamiliar detachment, "I think we should break up."
Your heart seemed to stop, the world around you growing hazy as the weight of his words sank in, "Break up?" You repeated the words, your voice barely above a whisper.
His gaze remained fixed on the ground, avoiding your eyes, "Yeah," He replied, his tone lacking the tenderness that had once been so characteristic of him, "I think it's for the best."
A wave of confusion and pain washed over you.
This wasn't the Wooyoung you had known for years, the one who had held you close on countless nights and whispered promises of a shared future. It felt as if a stranger had replaced the person you loved.
"But why?" You managed to find your voice, your heartache now mingling with a growing sense of betrayal.
He sighed, a heavy, burdensome sound, "Look, what we had... it was just puppy love. We're young, and we'll both move on easily. Trust me, it's better this way."
The words stung like a thousand cuts, each syllable a painful reminder of the love that had once bloomed between you, now discarded as if it were nothing more than a passing fancy.
You struggled to hold back tears, your chest tight with the pain of rejection and abandonment.
He never explained why he had grown distant or why he believed it was best to part ways. You were left with a gaping wound in your heart, the questions and doubts haunting you for years to come. You had assumed that he no longer loved you, that perhaps he was just falling out of love with you and didn't know how else to break it to you.
It was a moment etched into your memory, a wound that had never fully healed, and now, as you faced the possibility of a new beginning with Wooyoung at Dreamscape, it cast a long shadow over the uncertain future that lay ahead.
And just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, fate had a knack for throwing curveballs your way.
As you settled into your role and joined a new project team, the shock came when you realised that Wooyoung, of all people, was your project manager. The tension in the room was palpable, and the air seemed to crackle with unresolved emotions.
You did your best to act nonchalant and remain professional as you extended your hand toward him, a forced smile on your lips, "Thank you for welcoming me onto your team, Wooyoung." You said, the words carrying an undertone of politeness and nothing more.
He, too, played his part, shaking your hand and responding with a polite, "Of course, it's good to have you on board."
But beneath the veneer of professionalism, you both understood the complexities of the situation. The unspoken history between you hung in the air like a fragile secret, and you were acutely aware of the need to keep it hidden from your colleagues.
The potential controversy that could arise from your past relationship was something neither of you wanted to invite into your already complicated professional lives.
As the days passed and you and your ex-boyfriend were forced to work closely together on the project, you both made a conscious effort to push all personal feelings aside and focus solely on the task at hand. The office became a battleground of professionalism, where emotions were carefully masked and the past was buried deep.
But for Wooyoung, the facade of indifference and professionalism was a double-edged sword.
He couldn't help but wish that you would at least show some sign of emotion, whether it be unhappiness or anger. At least that would mean you acknowledged the shared history between you both. Instead, your ability to pretend as though there was absolutely nothing between you seemed to hurt him more than he would admit.
In quiet moments, when you both were reviewing project details or in meetings with colleagues, he found himself stealing glances in your direction, searching for any hint of the past in your eyes. He longed for a flicker of recognition, a sign that you remembered the love and pain you had once shared.
But your composure remained unbroken, and it drove a deeper wedge between you.
The silence between you both was deafening, filled with the words left unspoken and the emotions suppressed. It was a silent struggle, each of you grappling with the ghosts of your past and the desire for closure or resolution.
One afternoon, as the project team gathered in a meeting room to discuss the progress so far, Wooyoung was busy fighting an internal battle to keep his emotions in check. It was a challenging day with tight deadlines, and the room buzzed with the collective effort to meet them.
His attention, however, was fixated on you and Jongho.
You both worked exceptionally close together, huddled over a design, reviewing it meticulously. Jongho, known for his professionalism and respectfulness, offered his insights and ideas in a considerate manner, never overstepping boundaries.
But to Wooyoung, it felt like a dagger through his heart.
Irrational jealousy gnawed at him, and his chest tightened uncomfortably at the sight of you working closely with another person, even though he knew it was purely professional. It was a jealousy born of a deep longing and a desire to be the one by your side, sharing those moments of collaboration and connection.
As he observed you and Jongho, his thoughts swirled with frustration and regret. He wished, more than anything, that you would ask him why he had chosen to break up with you all those years ago. At least then, he would finally get the chance to explain his side of the story, to offer the apology he knew you deserved.
But the walls between you both remained stubbornly intact.
The past was a fragile subject, one that neither of you dared to breach. It was a tormenting silence, filled with unspoken words and the desire for resolution, that hung heavily in the room.
Hours later, when you stepped out of the meeting room alone, heading towards the printer to retrieve a few documents, Wooyoung saw it as his chance to finally speak with you. He understood that it wasn't the most professional setting for such a conversation, but he also knew that opportunities like this were rare and precious.
Determined to seize the moment, he discreetly followed you through the quiet corners of the office, his footsteps echoing softly in the empty hallway. When he finally caught up to you, his presence was as sudden as a whispered secret.
You turned, and the surprise on your face was palpable as you realised you were alone with him, far away from the prying eyes of your colleagues. The awkwardness in the air was thick, a stark reminder of the emotional chasm that had grown between you over the years.
Your eyes met briefly, but you immediately looked away, unable to sustain the intensity of the gaze. The silence hung heavy, and it was a stark contrast to the joyful moments you had once shared together.
Wooyoung felt a tightening in his chest as he watched you, noticing how uncomfortable and guarded you appeared.
He missed the days when your smile would light up a room and when you would beam with joy in his presence. The realisation hit him like a wave; he had played a significant role in creating this distance between you both, and there was no one else to blame but himself.
With a deep breath, he knew he had to break the silence, to bridge the gap that had grown between you. But the words remained trapped on his lips, the weight of his unspoken apologies and regrets weighing him down.
Desperate to put some distance between you and your ex, you swiftly collected the papers from the printer, your heart pounding loudly in nervousness. Every instinct told you to walk away, to leave this uncomfortable situation behind, but fate had other plans.
As you moved to exit the area, he intentionally positioned himself in your path, blocking your way.
Your heart sank, and your mind raced with questions.
What could he possibly want from you now, after all these years? He was the one who had left you, who had chosen to end what you once shared. So, why was he suddenly resurfacing in your life?
Sighing deeply, you mustered all the politeness you could, your voice tinged with impatience, "Wooyoung, please, move aside."
But to your surprise and growing discomfort, he refused to budge.
When you attempted to push past him, he shocked you by grabbing your shoulders, his grip firm but not aggressive, making you look into his eyes. His gaze bore into yours, and the intensity of his words sent a shiver down your spine.
"Are you going to act like this forever?" He asked, his voice laced with a mix of frustration and vulnerability, "Like nothing ever happened between us?"
The anger surged within you, a tempest threatening to break free from its confines. With great effort, you fought to keep it in check, a silent reminder that you were at work.
Your jaw clenched, and you met his gaze with a steely resolve.
In a quiet but firm tone, you asked, "How dare you ask me that? Did you forget that you were the one who insisted on there being nothing between us? Don't start acting like I was the one who hurt you."
Pain was etched across Wooyoung's face as he attempted to reach for your hand, a desperate plea for understanding.
His fingers brushed the air as you pulled away, stepping back to put some physical and emotional distance between you both. The tears welling in his eyes were painful to witness, but in that moment, you couldn't bring yourself to comfort him. After all, he was the one who had left you wounded and wondering for years.
With a voice that trembled with regret and sorrow, he began to apologise, his words coming out in a broken tone. He wanted to seize this opportunity to finally reveal why he had grown distant and the circumstances that led to your heartbreaking breakup.
But before he could say more, fate intervened.
Unbeknownst to both of you, Yunho had been passing by and had spotted you cornered by your ex. The uncomfortable expression on your face did not go unnoticed, and Yunho contemplated for a moment before deciding to come to your rescue.
The recruiter approached with a sense of urgency, his voice carrying a tone of concern as he called out your name.
"Hey, I've been looking for you regarding that claim you submitted." He said, creating a plausible excuse related to HR matters. His presence was a welcome distraction, breaking the tense atmosphere that had enveloped you and Wooyoung.
You breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for Yunho's timely intervention. It provided you with an excuse to disengage from the emotionally charged conversation and averted a potentially painful confrontation.
Wooyoung stood there, a mix of frustration and regret swirling within him, as he watched you follow Yunho down the hallway. He cursed himself under his breath, the bitter taste of missed opportunity gnawing at him once again. He knew he had failed to provide you with the explanation and closure you deserved.
With a heavy sigh, he retreated to the bathroom, needing a moment to collect himself. He couldn't shake the feeling of bitterness at your absence, his regret weighing him down as he replayed the missed chance over and over in his mind.
When he returned to the meeting room, he found Jongho still there, diligently working on the project. The expression on his face must have revealed his inner turmoil because the youngest looked up and asked, "Everything okay?"
Wooyoung nodded, forcing a small smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, "Yeah, just some personal matters to attend to." He replied, though he felt a pang of jealousy at how close you seemed to be growing to Yunho.
He knew he had no right to be upset about it.
After all, he was no longer your boyfriend; he was just the douchebag who had hurt you when all you wanted was to be with him.
As he returned to work, he couldn't shake the sense of unease that had settled within him. The encounter with you had opened old wounds and stirred up emotions he had long tried to bury. Now, as he faced the consequences of his past actions, he wondered if there was any hope for redemption and forgiveness at all.
In the days that followed, Wooyoung tried his hardest to find opportunities to speak with you alone. The weight of the unresolved conversation gnawed at him. He knew he had a lot to answer for, and he was determined to make amends.
But it quickly became evident that you were adamant about avoiding him like the plague. You kept your interactions with him strictly professional, speaking to him only when necessary and making a hasty escape from his presence the moment your involvement was no longer required.
It was clear that you had no interest in rekindling any form of personal connection with him.
Recognising the boundaries you had set, he decided to respect your wishes. He understood that he had hurt you deeply, and he had no right to force himself back into your life. The pain of your separation had been his doing, and he couldn't change the past. So, he gave you the space you needed, even if it meant leaving you alone.
As he watched you from a distance, he felt a profound sense of regret and sorrow.
He knew he had made mistakes, and he couldn't undo the past. But perhaps, in time, he could find a way to make amends and rebuild the bridges he had burned. Until then, he would continue to silently bear the weight of his past actions, hoping for a chance at redemption.
Weeks turned into months, and the distance between you remained.
The workplace had its own rhythm, and you both settled into your roles within the company, maintaining a professional demeanour in each other's presence.
He had resigned himself to the fact that you had moved on, and he had no choice but to respect your boundaries. He watched as you thrived in your role, your talent as a graphic designer shining through in your work. It was clear that you had found your place within the company and were flourishing.
In his own way, Wooyoung tried to do the same.
He dedicated himself to his role as an architect, pouring his energy into designing innovative structures and contributing to the company's success. Despite his professional accomplishments, there was an emptiness that lingered, a sense of unfinished business that weighed on his heart.
While you both had managed to coexist in the same workplace without any overt conflicts, there were moments when your paths crossed, and the unspoken history hung heavily in the air.
Each encounter was a reminder of the past, of the love and pain you had once shared.
As time passed, you sometimes wondered if there would ever be a chance for the two of you to find closure. The thought of reopening old wounds was daunting, but you couldn't deny the curiosity about what Wooyoung might have to say after all these years.
The team-building activity at the famous creek retreat on the outskirts of the city had everyone away from the office for a couple of days. It was a chance to bond with colleagues and build better working relationships, but for you and Wooyoung, it meant being stuck in the same van during the journey to the location.
By this point, you had both grown accustomed to each other's presence and the unspoken tension between you.
Wooyoung occupied the front passenger seat, while you ended up sandwiched between Yeosang and Jongho in the middle row. The initial jokes and laughter that had filled the van gradually faded, leaving a comfortable silence in its wake.
As the rhythmic hum of the van's engine filled the air, you succumbed to weariness, your head hanging uncomfortably as you drifted into an unplanned nap.
But your ex couldn't just sit by and do nothing when he noticed your head drooping uncomfortably.
He threw a disapproving glare at Yeosang, who was still awake beside you, gesturing for him to help you find a more comfortable position. Yeosang obeyed instantly, and carefully adjusted your head, allowing you to rest more comfortably.
In a gentle and almost instinctive gesture, Wooyoung removed his own jacket and carefully draped it over your hunched figure.
It was a small act of care and warmth, a reminder of the time when he used to take care of you in more ways than one. In that moment, as you slept soundly, he allowed himself to reminisce about the past and the love that had once bound you together.
The van journey continued, the landscape outside passing by in a blur, while inside, a sense of nostalgia and longing hung in the air, and for Wooyoung, a quiet longing to care for you, even if it was only in these fleeting moments when you were unaware.
Excitement bubbled within you as the van finally arrived at the retreat, and the sight of Yunho waiting for everyone only heightened your anticipation. You rushed up to him with giddy enthusiasm, your energy infectious as you exchanged a high-five with the tall recruiter.
Yunho, always the gentleman, made a move to grab your luggage from the trunk, his intention to help you take it to your room clear in his actions. He smiled warmly, ready to assist you in any way he could. But just as his hand was about to reach your luggage, something unexpected happened.
Wooyoung, who had been observing from a distance, suddenly stepped in and swiftly grabbed your luggage, his actions asserting his presence with a possessive undertone.
You froze, a mix of surprise and discomfort washing over you as you realised what was happening.
It was evident that your ex's possessiveness was beginning to surface, and he muttered under his breath, "I'll do it. She's in my team after all; I should be the one to take care of her."
The unexpected tension between Wooyoung and Yunho escalated as both men refused to back down. You had thought Yunho would step aside amicably, given his typically easygoing nature. But he surprised everyone by firmly gripping the luggage, refusing to let it go.
"No, it's fine," Yunho asserted with a determined look, "I am the one who recruited her, after all. By right, I should be the one taking care of her better than anyone."
The atmosphere grew increasingly charged as the two men seemed locked in a silent standoff, each wanting to assert their claim over the situation and their desire to take care of you.
Sensing the tension, Jongho and Yeosang quickly stepped forward to diffuse the situation.
Jongho, with a playful grin, stepped between Wooyoung and Yunho, pushing them apart gently. He then grabbed your luggage with a confident air, "Oh, step aside, you two. I should be the one to handle the heavy lifting. After all, I'm the youngest and strongest here."
With that, the tension in the air began to dissipate, and you chuckled at the unexpected turn of events.
It seemed that your colleagues had a knack for turning potentially awkward situations into light-hearted moments, reminding everyone that this team-building retreat was meant for bonding and camaraderie.
Wooyoung, realising the embarrassment of his own actions at that moment, decided to feign nonchalance, offering a brief, somewhat awkward smile before he hurried off to settle down in his own room. It was clear that the situation had caught him off guard, and he needed some time to collect his thoughts.
Yunho, on the other hand, walked you to your room.
The earlier tension now replaced by a more relaxed atmosphere.
As you both made your way, you couldn't help but ask Yunho why he had fought back against Wooyoung's attempt to help you with your luggage. He seemed to be struggling to find the right words, and there was a moment of silence before he finally replied.
"I just... wanted to protect you from him."
He admitted, his voice tinged with sincerity. It was a straightforward response, but there was a hint of something more beneath the surface.
You assured him that Wooyoung would never do anything to hurt you, your words meant to put his concerns to rest. But instead of feeling reassured, Yunho felt slightly bitter. It was as if your defence of your ex-boyfriend had struck a chord with him.
Unbeknownst to Yunho, his feelings for you might have been a little more than platonic.
The protective instinct he had shown earlier had surprised even him, leaving him to grapple with emotions he hadn't fully understood or acknowledged. As he stood with you outside your room, a sense of inner turmoil lingered, and the retreat had already taken an unexpected turn for him, one that would leave him questioning his own feelings in the days to come.
The day at the retreat continued with a series of team-building activities and games designed to strengthen your teamwork and bond with your colleagues.
Unfortunately, you found yourself paired with Wooyoung for most of the day, given that you were in the same team. But it was through these games that you began to let your guard down around him, even if it's only just a bit.
As the two of you were selected to represent your team in a treasure hunt, you felt a mix of nerves and excitement. The task ahead required you both to focus solely on the challenge at hand, putting aside any personal history or unresolved feelings.
With a shared goal in mind, you and Wooyoung worked together closely, determined to solve the puzzles and riddles that would lead you closer to the treasure. There was a surprising ease to your interaction and a sense of teamwork that transcended the complicated past you shared.
As you ventured through the retreat grounds, following clues with him, you realised that, for the first time in a long while, you were able to enjoy each other's company without the weight of your history hanging over you. The laughter and excitement that accompanied each discovery allowed you to momentarily forget the tension that had defined your interactions at work.
The treasure hunt had eventually taken you along a winding trail through the retreat's serene surroundings, and as you both took a well-deserved break on one of the wooden benches along the path, a sense of ease settled over you both.
He flashed a mischievous grin, his eyes twinkling with a hint of the playful banter you had once shared.
"You know," He said with mock seriousness, "I thought a decade apart might have improved your riddle-solving abilities, but I guess some things never change."
You scoffed at his comment, leaning back on the wooden bench.
"Oh please," You retorted, a twinkle in your eye, "You should talk, Mr. Impatient. You've always been so quick to jump to conclusions. Remember that time we got stuck in that escape room and you nearly dismantled the whole place trying to find the way out?"
Wooyoung's laughter rang out, and he shook his head, clearly recalling the memory.
"Okay, fair point," He conceded, his expression softening as he allowed himself to reminisce about the past, "But in my defence, I was just trying to impress you with my problem-solving skills."
As your laughter filled the air, he stared at you as if you were the most captivating sight he had ever seen. At that moment, the realisation hit him like a lightning bolt: he missed you like crazy, and he regretted walking away from you all those years ago.
The years apart had allowed Wooyoung to mature and reflect on his actions, and he now understood the depth of his feelings for you.
As he watched you laugh and joke with him, he wondered if there was a chance to make amends, to rebuild what had been lost, and to finally give voice to the apologies and explanations he owed you.
Your ex contemplated using the moment of levity to broach a more serious conversation, to finally address the unresolved issues from your past. He opened his mouth to speak, ready to say those words that had been lingering on his mind for so long, "Listen, I—"
But before he could utter another word, his attempt was abruptly interrupted by the unexpected presence of Yunho.
The recruiter had a knack for appearing at just the wrong times, and this instance was no exception. The recruiter approached you both, his expression was carefully neutral, though an undercurrent of unease flickered in his eyes as he observed the two of you conversing like old friends.
With a teasing grin, Yunho playfully chided, "Excuse me, are you actually slacking off right now?" You immediately sprang to your own defence, "As if! We were just taking a short break!"
The banter between you two becoming second nature.
But Wooyoung's reaction to your interaction with Yunho was far from casual. He couldn't hide his irritation, and his patience had run thin.
In a bold move, he wrapped his fingers around your wrist, a possessive gesture that sent a clear message, "Thank you for your concern, but we have a journey to continue on." With a gentle yet firm tug, he pulled you away from the taller male.
As he led you down the path, his grip on your wrist gradually loosened, and he found himself grappling with the tension that had resurfaced in the wake of Yunho's interruption.
It seemed that the conversation he had hoped to have with you would have to wait for another time, and the retreat had once again taken an unexpected turn, leaving all three of you with unanswered questions and unspoken feelings.
Walking alongside Wooyoung, you were aware of the tension between him and Yunho that had been growing throughout the day, you couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt.
It felt like their constant battles were, in some way, a result of your presence and the unresolved emotions between you and your ex. You wished you could find a way to alleviate the tension and make things easier for everyone involved.
At the same time, you couldn't deny the unexpected warmth that had enveloped you since rekindling your friendship with Wooyoung.
The day had reminded you of how much you missed his goofy personality and his ability to make you laugh. It was a feeling you hadn't fully realised until now, and you wondered how different things might have been if only you had remained friends all these years.
As evening fell and the group gathered for dinner, the atmosphere had mellowed, and you all enjoyed hotpot together.
Wooyoung made it a point to sit beside you, and as he cooked, he paid special attention to preparing your favourite food just the way you liked them. It was a gesture that felt oddly familiar, and for a moment, it transported you back in time. You smiled as you watched him, reminded of how he used to take charge of your meals because he was the better cook between the two of you.
At this moment, with the delicious aroma of the hotpot filling the air and his playful banter accompanying it, it felt as though you were back in those simpler times, a time when your bond was unburdened by the weight of the past.
As the complex dynamics between you, Wooyoung, and Yunho continued to unfold, it became apparent to the rest of your colleagues that something unusual was happening.
Yeosang had taken the opportunity to fill Jongho in on the events that transpired during the car ride to the retreat, explaining how Wooyoung had taken special care of you when you were asleep and how he had displayed a level of familiarity with you that was hard to ignore.
Jongho nodded thoughtfully as he absorbed this information.
"I always thought there was something different about the way Wooyoung hyung looked at her," He remarked, his brow furrowing slightly, "It's almost like they knew each other before coming to work here. And I'm pretty sure Yunho hyung knows something we don't."
Your colleagues might not have the full story, but they were observant enough to sense that there was more to the interactions between the three of you than met the eye.
As the days at the retreat unfolded, Yunho observed the interactions between you and Wooyoung with a quiet demeanour.
He fought hard to maintain a neutral expression, not wanting to reveal any signs of his inner turmoil. Despite his efforts, he couldn't deceive Jongho and Yeosang, who were growing increasingly perceptive to the underlying tension.
The two exchanged knowing glances whenever they noticed Yunho observing the two of you closely. They had their own suspicions about the complicated dynamics at play but chose to remain silent, not wanting to intrude on a situation that seemed to be filled with unspoken emotions and unresolved history.
On one of the restless nights during the retreat, you found yourself tossing and turning in your room, unable to find the peace needed to fall asleep. Frustration mounting, you made the impulsive decision to take a quiet walk around the safe surroundings of the retreat.
The night was serene, and the cool breeze provided a momentary respite from the turmoil of your thoughts.
As you wandered through the moonlit paths, you stumbled upon Wooyoung, sitting alone on one of the benches, gazing up at the vast night sky. His silhouette seemed so familiar yet distant, and you hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether to disturb his solitude.
Just as you turned to leave, he softly called out to you, "Stay with me." His voice carried a pleading whisper. Unable to resist the pull, you retraced your steps and settled down beside him.
Your heart skipped a beat when you felt him lean his head gently on your shoulder. In the silence of the night, the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the faint chirping of crickets. You could sense the tension and emotions swirling around the two of you.
Breaking the silence, he asked the simple question that had been on his mind, his voice barely above a whisper, "Why are you here?"
You sighed softly, your gaze fixed on the starry sky, "I couldn't sleep," You admitted, your voice equally hushed. He nodded, "Yeah, I'm here for the same reason," You furrowed your brows at the revelation, "Why can't you sleep? You've never been one to suffer from insomnia."
A moment passed before he finally confessed, "Because I can't stop thinking about you."
Your heart raced as Wooyoung moved to take your hands in his, gently turning you to face him. The vulnerability in his eyes was undeniable, and it was clear that he had been waiting for this moment, a moment free from interruptions or distractions.
The weight of unspoken words hung heavily in the air, and you knew that this was the time to finally have that conversation.
He began by addressing the question that had haunted you both for years, "I want to talk about why I grew distant and why I eventually broke up with you back then."
You nodded, your eyes locked onto his, urging him to continue.
He took a deep breath before delving into his past, a past filled with insecurities and misguided advice.
"I spoke to my brother about my dreams, about wanting to become an architect," He explained, his voice tinged with regret, "At the time, my brother was heartbroken from his own breakup, and he... he told me that love would only hold me back from reaching my full potential."
His confession hit you like a wave of emotions.
It was the answer you had longed for, the missing piece of the puzzle that had haunted your memories for years. You listened intently as he continued, his voice trembling with the weight of his confession.
"He told me that if I wanted to be successful in the future, I would have to... to get rid of you."
The revelation was bittersweet.
It was painful to hear that his decision to distance himself from you had been influenced by such misguided advice, but it also provided a semblance of closure, a glimpse into the reasons behind his actions all those years ago.
As you absorbed his words, you felt a mix of emotions—anger, sadness, and, surprisingly, a glimmer of understanding.
Wooyoung's voice was filled with genuine remorse as he continued, "I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am for everything, for believing my brother's words and letting them dictate my actions. I was such a fool."
You listened intently, your own emotions swirling as he spoke.
"Wooyoung, it was so hard for me too," You admitted softly, "I couldn't understand why you were pulling away, why you seemed so distant. It felt like you were slipping through my fingers."
He lowered his head, his voice trembling as he continued, "I know, and I regret it more than anything. I never wanted to hurt you, but I thought it was the right thing to do at the time."
Tears welled up in your eyes as you reached out to gently touch his cheek, "We were both so young and confused," You whispered, "And we made mistakes. But it's in the past now."
He nodded, his gaze meeting yours once more, "It's taken me so long to realise how wrong I was," He admitted, his voice heavy with regret, "I should have fought for us, not pushed you away."
You gave him a small, understanding smile, "Sometimes we have to go through pain and regrets to truly appreciate what we had. I've learned from it too."
As the night breeze rustled the leaves around you, he took a deep breath, his eyes locked on yours, "Thank you for listening, for giving me a chance to explain," With a heartfelt sigh, you replied, "And thank you for being honest with me. It means a lot."
The weight of the past began to lift, replaced by a sense of understanding and a glimmer of hope for the future.
In that quiet moment beneath the starlit sky, you both realised that perhaps, just perhaps, there was a chance to heal old wounds and build something new together.
After the retreat, life at work settled into a new rhythm.
The weight of the past that had lingered between you and Wooyoung had finally been lifted, and you found yourselves getting along better than ever. The resolution of your past issues created a sense of understanding between you, allowing you both to focus on the present and the potential for a future together.
But Wooyoung knew that winning you back wasn't going to be easy, even with your forgiveness.
He understood that the presence of Yunho, who had inserted himself into your life in various ways, posed a strong competition. Observing Yunho's efforts to be close to you, your ex realised that he needed to step up his game if he didn't want to lose you to his rival.
Wooyoung was determined to show you that he had changed, that he was ready to make amends for the past and fight for a second chance at love. He knew it wouldn't be a simple task, but he was willing to put in the effort, knowing that you were worth every ounce of it.
As the days went by, he subtly began to make his presence felt in your life once more, finding opportunities to spend time with you and rekindle the connection that had once been so strong. He was committed to proving to you that he was ready to be the partner you deserved, hoping that you would see the changes in him and consider giving your relationship another chance.
The weeks leading up to the project deadline had turned into a gruelling and relentless cycle for you and your team. The pressure was relentless, and you had all been caught in a never-ending loop of work, eat, and sleep—or lack thereof.
As a perfectionist, you held yourself to incredibly high standards. You constantly pushed the boundaries of your abilities, striving for perfection in every detail of your work.
This relentless pursuit of excellence had taken a toll on your well-being, particularly your sleep. Your colleagues might have been unaware of the extent of your exhaustion, but you were all too aware of the sacrifices you were making.
One afternoon, during the usual lunch break, the office was quiet and empty as everyone else headed to the cafeteria to grab a meal and a moment of respite.
But you were too exhausted to join them.
Instead, you found yourself unable to stay awake at your desk. The fatigue was overwhelming, and your body finally gave in to the exhaustion that had been building for weeks.
Your head gently slumped onto your folded arms, and your eyes closed as you succumbed to sleep. The hum of the office's air conditioning and the soft ticking of the clock on the wall provided a soothing background to your unintended nap.
Meanwhile, Yunho thought it was unusual not to see you at the cafeteria, especially during these high-pressure days leading up to the project deadline. Concern crept into his mind as he realised that he hadn't seen you taking a break or grabbing a bite to eat like everyone else.
Furrowing his brows, he decided to check around the office, his worry growing as he found no trace of you at your usual spots. He couldn't shake off the feeling that something might be wrong. Maybe you were feeling unwell, or perhaps the stress had finally taken its toll on you.
As he made his way through the quiet office, his steps grew lighter, and his anxiety turned into relief when he finally spotted you.
Yunho's heart swelled with affection and concern as he gazed down at you, fast asleep at your desk. He found you incredibly adorable, even in the midst of exhaustion. However, that adoration was mixed with a deep sense of worry as he realised just how overworked you must be to skip meals and resort to catching sleep at the office.
Kneeling beside you, he couldn't resist the urge to gently push a few stray strands of hair away from your face, his fingers brushing softly against your cheek. He wished he could take away the burden of stress that seemed to weigh you down.
But as he hovered over you, lost in his thoughts, he was abruptly pulled from his reverie when Wooyoung's voice cut through the silence of the office.
"What do you think you're doing?"
Yunho quickly stood up, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment at being caught in such an intimate moment. He cleared his throat, struggling to find an explanation, "I... I was just checking on her. She looked really tired, and I wanted to make sure she was okay."
Wooyoung's expression remained guarded, his eyes fixed on Yunho as if he were assessing his intentions. It was clear that the rivalry between them had not dissipated, and the taller male's actions had not gone unnoticed.
Yunho felt a pang of guilt and self-doubt, wondering whether his concern for you was genuine or if it was fueled by something more complicated. He stepped back, allowing Wooyoung to take the lead, unsure of how to navigate the complex web of emotions that seemed to entangle the three of you.
Flustered, Yunho made a hasty exit from the scene.
He needed a moment to collect himself, to sort through the whirlwind of feelings that had been stirred by the sight of you asleep at your desk. It was undeniable that his concern for you went beyond the boundaries of a typical colleague's care.
As Yunho retreated, Wooyoung took a few steps closer to your desk, his gaze softening as he watched you sleep. The stress and exhaustion that had etched lines of weariness on your face tugged at his heartstrings. He wanted nothing more than to take care of you, to make sure you were comfortable and at ease.
With a tender touch, Wooyoung reached for a container, your favourite meal inside, that he had prepared earlier in the morning. He placed it gently by the side of your desk, ensuring you had something delicious to eat once you woke up.
Then, he unfastened his blazer and carefully draped it over your hunched figure before pressing a small kiss onto your temple. His actions were driven by a desire to keep you warm and snug, to shield you from the chilly air of the office. Watching you sleep so peacefully, he smiled softly.
Beneath that smile lurked a sense of jealousy within him.
Seeing Yunho's concern for you triggered a surge of possessiveness and insecurity that he found hard to ignore. He knew he needed to address these emotions, but for now, his priority was making sure you were taken care of, even if it meant he had to battle his inner demons silently.
After lunch, Yeosang's gentle touch and voice roused you from your slumber, bringing you back to the bustling reality of the office.
As your eyes fluttered open, you immediately noticed Wooyoung's blazer draped over you, providing warmth and comfort. It was a gesture that touched your heart deeply, and a small, contented smile tugged at your lips.
Your gaze shifted to the container of food on your desk, and recognition washed over you. It was unmistakably Wooyoung's signature meal, one he had always lovingly prepared for you during your high school days. The rush of nostalgia and fond memories that accompanied the sight of the familiar dish made your heart flutter.
It was as if he had reached through time to the days when you were a giddy high school girl in love.
But it wasn't just the meal that stirred your emotions.
As you turned your attention to the meeting room, your heart skipped a beat when you locked eyes with your ex-boyfriend.
He looked incredibly handsome, his features refined by the years that had passed since high school. The sight of him reignited a spark of attraction and reminded you of why you had fallen so deeply in love with him all those years ago.
In that moment, the boundaries that had kept your emotions in check began to blur. You couldn't help but feel that maybe, just maybe, there was still a chance for something beautiful to blossom between you and Wooyoung once again.
The day of the final presentation had finally arrived.
It was a crucial moment for your project, and the team had gathered early at the office to prepare for the important meeting with key stakeholders. The atmosphere was tense as everyone fine-tuned their speeches and went over the final details. However, you noticed that Wooyoung was conspicuously absent.
Concern gnawed at you, as this was unlike him.
He was usually punctual and responsible, and even if he were running late, he would have sent a message to keep the team informed. But this time, there was no word from him, and none of your colleagues had heard from him either.
As the minutes ticked by, your worry deepened.
You tried calling him repeatedly, only to be met with his voicemail each time. It was as though he had vanished, and the lack of communication sent a shiver of anxiety down your spine.
Your colleagues attempted to reassure you, telling you that he would likely show up soon and that there was probably a reasonable explanation for his absence. Still, you couldn't shake off the nagging feeling that something was amiss, and your heart sank with every unanswered call.
The postponement of the meeting due to Wooyoung's absence only added to your growing anxiety.
His presence was vital as the project manager, and the fact that he hadn't shown up without any explanation left you deeply worried and on the verge of an emotional breakdown.
Unable to contain your concern any longer, you rushed to Yunho, desperately seeking any information that could help you reach Wooyoung. You needed to find him, to ensure he was safe and to understand why he had disappeared on such an important day.
The recruiter tried to calm you as he quickly accessed the company database to search for your ex's personal details. It was a race against time to locate him, and you clung to the hope that you could reach him soon.
Once Yunho found his home address, you wasted no time.
You packed your belongings in a rush, informing your concerned colleagues that you were going to check on him.
Yunho, worried for your safety given your fragile emotional state, volunteered to accompany you. You agreed, grateful for his support as you went on your mission to find Wooyoung.
The tension in the car was palpable as you and Yunho raced towards Wooyoung's house, your hearts heavy with worry and fear for his safety. But what you encountered on the way was something you never could have anticipated.
As your car approached an accident site at the side of the road, your heart seemed to stop when you recognised the mangled remains of an oddly familiar car.
No... no, it can't be.
Panic surged through you, and you screamed at Yunho to stop the car immediately. He slammed on the brakes, and without a second thought, you flung the car door open and sprinted towards the accident scene.
The crash site was chaos personified, with flashing red and blue lights illuminating the area.
As you approached, your heart pounded in your chest like a drum, and the weight of impending dread pressed down on you like a suffocating blanket.
Tears rolled down your cheeks, blurring your vision, as you attempted to rush past the stern-faced authorities who had already cordoned off the area. Their expressions were unyielding, their voices firm as they insisted on maintaining control of the situation.
"Please, let me through! That's my... my friend's car!"
You cried, your voice cracking with anguish, desperate to get closer to Wooyoung. The police officers held their ground, their solemn expressions a stark contrast to your frantic demeanour.
Your desperation reached a fever pitch as you continued to shout his name, your voice carrying your love, fear, and regret, "Wooyoung! Wooyoung, please be okay! God, I... I love you, okay?!" The words tumbled from your lips, heavy with raw emotion and filled with the agony of knowing you might lose him forever.
But the authorities were unyielding, firmly keeping you at bay, their unspoken message clear: they were doing their best to handle the situation, and your presence was only complicating matters further.
The seconds felt like hours as you stood there, helpless and terrified, hoping against hope that Wooyoung would somehow be okay.
In that moment of heart-wrenching despair, Yunho quickly gathered you into his arms, holding you tightly as your legs gave way beneath you. You clung to him, your sobs wracking your body as you repeated the painful words like a mantra, "I've lost him... I've lost him again..."
Yunho held you close, his own heart heavy with the knowledge that, despite his feelings, in the end, it would always be Wooyoung who occupied the most significant place in your heart. He silently accepted this truth, providing you with a comforting presence as you grieved the possibility of losing someone you still deeply loved.
An authority figure eventually approached you two, asking if you knew the victim.
When you confirmed that you were friends with the victim, a sense of relief washed over her face. She quickly informed you that Wooyoung was in the ambulance receiving immediate medical care, and you clung to that sliver of hope like a drowning person clutching a lifebuoy.
With Yunho's support, they guided you towards the ambulance.
Your heart continued to race with anxiety, a relentless drumbeat of fear echoing in your chest. The relief of knowing he was alive was shadowed by the uncertainty of how badly he might be hurt.
Tears streamed down your face the moment you laid eyes on Wooyoung in the back of the ambulance.
The sight of him, battered and bruised, was almost too much to bear. His face bore a couple of bruises, and you reached out to gently touch his hand, relieved that he was conscious and responsive.
The doctor provided some reassurance, explaining that he had sustained a few broken bones and injuries, but overall, he was in stable condition. But they still needed to transport him to the hospital for a more thorough examination to rule out any internal injuries or bleeding.
Your heart remained heavy, but a glimmer of hope flickered within you as you knew he had made it through the worst part.
As the ambulance set off for the hospital with Wooyoung inside, Yunho quickly contacted someone from work to update everyone about the accident. You sat in the back of the ambulance, clutching Wooyoung's hand tightly, unwilling to let go.
The realisation hit you like a wave – your feelings for him had never truly faded; they had only been buried beneath the surface.
Now, more than ever, you were determined to stay by his side, to support him through his recovery, and to make up for the lost time. The events of the day had rekindled your love for him, stronger than ever before, and you couldn't imagine ever letting him go again.
"Do you know how scared I was, Jung Wooyoung? Don't you dare do that to me again, you hear me?" You whispered in a broken voice.
Despite the pain he must have been in, he smiled and nodded. His hand in yours was a reassuring anchor in the midst of this chaotic situation as he tightened his grip, giving you a comforting squeeze.
"I'm sorry for worrying you. This morning, as I was rushing to work, I hadn't been alert enough to realise a reckless driver was approaching from the side, he ignored the red light and ran straight into my car."
As he explained the accident, your worry for him only intensified, but he managed to inject a bit of humour into the conversation, teasing you about your emotional outburst. Your cheeks flushed with embarrassment, but you smiled back at him.
"Yeah, well, maybe it's about time I said it out loud," You replied, your voice filled with sincerity, "I do love you, Wooyoung. I never stopped, even when I thought I had. It's still you that I want, it will always be you. And I... I don't ever want to lose you again."
"You won't have to. I'm not going anywhere this time, I promise." His eyes locked onto yours, and the two of you shared a moment of understanding, the unspoken feelings finally out in the open.
Wooyoung's heart swelled with joy, a feeling he hadn't experienced in a long time. For years, he had carried the weight of regret and longing for you, unsure if he would ever hear those three words from your lips again.
Now, as he looked into your eyes and heard you say that you loved him, it was as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his chest.
A radiant smile spread across his bruised face, and his eyes sparkled with happiness. It was a smile that spoke of relief, of hope, and of a love that had endured despite the years of separation and heartache. In that moment, he knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, he was willing to face them, because he had the love of his life by his side once again.
The final meeting for the project was a bittersweet moment.
Wooyoung, with his cast on his arm, sat next to you, and the shareholders expressed their relief and sympathy for what had happened to him. The mood in the room was one of gratitude that he had come out of the accident relatively unscathed.
You couldn't help but steal glances at him throughout the meeting, your heart filled with love and concern for his well-being.
As the presentation concluded successfully, you exchanged a subtle, reassuring smile with your boyfriend. It was a silent acknowledgement of the challenges you had overcome together, not just in the project but in your personal lives as well.
The future felt uncertain, but you both knew one thing for sure: you were determined to face it together, hand in hand, and this time, nothing would tear you apart.
The dinner celebration later that night was filled with laughter.
Your colleagues chatted and celebrated the successful completion of the project, unaware of the quiet exchange happening beneath the table. Wooyoung's caring looks and subtle touches spoke volumes, and he couldn't resist the urge to hold your hand, even as you shot him a warning look with wide eyes.
You both knew the importance of keeping your rekindled relationship discreet at work, fearing any potential conflicts of interest. But, at that moment, as your fingers intertwined under the table, you smiled at each other, knowing that your love had found its way back, and this time, it would be even stronger.
Yunho, ever the understanding friend, had come to terms with the reality of your relationship with Wooyoung. He genuinely wished the best for you, even if it meant he had to let go of any romantic hopes he might have had.
He knew that in your eyes, he had always been a close friend and colleague. Nothing more, nothing less.
One afternoon in the office pantry, the recruiter smiled to himself as he discreetly observed the two of you sharing a quiet moment in the pantry, thinking no one else was around. Wooyoung held your hand, and in a daring move, he stole a quick, playful kiss, prompting you to smack his arm in a half-hearted warning.
It was a glimpse of the love and happiness that had found its way back into both of your lives, and Yunho was content knowing that you were where you truly belonged.
A few months passed since Wooyoung's cast had been removed and he had fully recovered, you both found yourselves in a comfortable and loving routine. Although you travelled to work together, you would part ways to enter your respective offices, with your boyfriend taking every opportunity to sneak a kiss onto your face before playfully running away, dodging your affectionate smacks.
The sun streamed through the car windows as you both drove to work together, the atmosphere light and easy. As you approached the office building, he glanced over at you, a playful glint in his eyes.
"You know, babe," He began, his voice warm and teasing, "I've been thinking. We've been keeping our relationship under wraps at work for a while now. And, well, I was wondering if maybe it's time we let everyone know."
You turned to look at him, eyebrows raised in surprise, "Are you serious, Woo?"
He nodded, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips, "Yeah, I mean, we're in different departments anyway. It's not like we're working closely together every day. Plus, I think it's about time our colleagues knew how lucky I am to have you."
You smiled at his words, your heart warming.
"I agree," You replied, reaching over to give his hand a reassuring squeeze, "I think it's a great idea. Let's do it."
He grinned, his eyes sparkling with happiness, "That's my girl. I can't wait to show everyone how amazing you are."
On that memorable morning, the meeting room was filled with an air of curiosity as Wooyoung called your closest colleagues together. You stood nervously at his side, your fingers intertwined with his, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. The glances and smiles exchanged between your colleagues only added to your jitters.
With a deep breath, your boyfriend finally spoke up, his voice laced with affection as he raised your intertwined hands, "We thought you guys deserved to know, we're together."
Instead of the expected gasps or exclamations of surprise, mischievous grins and playful amusement greeted his announcement. Yeosang, always quick with a witty remark, responded first, "Okay, and?"
Your brow furrowed in confusion as you glanced around the room, wondering why everyone seemed so unfazed.
Jongho chimed in with a smirk, teasing Wooyoung mercilessly, "Yeah, we know. Literally everyone knows you two are together. You haven't exactly been subtle at all, you know, especially you, Wooyoung hyung."
Your boyfriend's laughter filled the room, and you couldn't help but join in, your cheeks turning a deeper shade of red. You exchanged a sheepish look with him, realising that your relationship had been far less discreet than you thought.
Yeosang playfully rolled his eyes, "Seriously, guys, we've known for ages. You don't have to announce it like it's breaking news."
Jongho continued teasing, "Yeah, and Wooyoung hyung, you've been practically broadcasting it with that lovestruck look on your face every time you're around her."
Wooyoung's grin widened as he glanced at you, affection clear in his eyes, "Well, I can't help it. She's pretty amazing."
Everyone groaned loudly at that, all prepared to witness more public displays of affection at work now that you were both openly together. Pulling you close to him, your boyfriend knew there was one more thing you both needed to do.
With the decision to revisit your hometown and properly introduce each other to your families, the two of you planned a weekend trip back to Ilsan. It was a significant step in your relationship, a journey that held the promise of deeper commitment.
As you packed your bags and prepared for the trip, there was a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air.
This symbolised a beautiful chapter in your relationship, one where you would bridge the gap between your pasts and your future, and where the bonds between you and your families would grow stronger, just as your love had.
As the car journeyed back to Ilsan, the town where your shared childhood memories were embedded, a sense of nostalgia washed over both of you. You gazed out the window, watching familiar landmarks pass by like scenes from an old movie. Wooyoung took notice of the emotions welling up in your eyes as you relived those cherished moments from your past.
Unable to resist, he gently reached for your hand, intertwining his fingers with yours. Your eyes met his, and he felt a profound connection to you, one that spanned years and countless memories. Leaning in, he pressed a tender kiss onto the back of your knuckles, his way of silently acknowledging the shared history you both carried.
The journey back to your hometown was a trip down memory lane, a testament to the enduring love you held for each other and the promise of a bright future together.
Visiting Wooyoung's family was a heartwarming experience.
His parents welcomed you with open arms, their smiles radiating warmth and genuine happiness. They had always liked you, even during your younger years, and seeing you back together with their son filled their hearts with joy. They believed that you and Wooyoung made a sweet and perfect couple.
His brother, however, carried a heavy burden of guilt.
He took the two of you aside, his voice filled with remorse as he offered a sincere apology for his role in breaking you apart all those years ago. As you and Wooyoung exchanged a knowing look, you both forgave him wholeheartedly.
You understood that sometimes, people make mistakes, and those mistakes can lead to valuable lessons for everyone involved.
It was a moment of closure and healing for all of you.
Wooyoung's visit to your parents' house, however, was accompanied by a mixture of anticipation and anxiety.
He knew he had deeply hurt you in the past, and the possibility of your parents' disapproval loomed large in his mind. He was prepared to work tirelessly to earn their trust back.
Much to his surprise and relief, your parents welcomed him with open arms. It was a gesture of acceptance he hadn't expected so readily. As he sat down with them, he couldn't help but express his gratitude and curiosity.
"I'm truly grateful for your acceptance," He began, his voice filled with sincerity, "But I have to admit, after everything I put your daughter through, I didn't expect this. Why are you so willing to accept me back into her life?"
Your mother sent him a warm and understanding smile.
"It's clear to us how happy she is with you, Wooyoung-ah. That happiness means the world to us as her parents. Besides, we believe that people can change and grow. We all make mistakes when we're young and foolish, but it's the choices we make now that define us. You have a chance to redeem yourself, and as long as you make our daughter happy and treat her well, that's what truly matters to us."
He couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude and relief, knowing that he was given a second chance not only with you but also with your supportive and forgiving parents.
It was a moment of redemption and hope for a brighter future together.
After years of deliberately avoiding the annual school reunions to spare yourselves the potential heartache of seeing each other again, this year was different.
You both had finally agreed that it was time to attend the gathering, now that you had found your way back into each other's lives.
In previous years, you had both stayed away from the event, each for your own reasons. It was simply too painful to confront the memories of your past, the love that had once blossomed, and the heartbreak that had followed. But now, after rekindling your relationship, you feel ready to face those memories together.
The decision to attend the reunion was a significant step, one that reflected your newfound confidence in your love and your willingness to embrace your shared history. It was a declaration to yourselves and to everyone who knew you that your bond had not only endured but had also grown stronger over time.
As you both made your way to the reunion, you couldn't help but feel a mixture of anticipation and nostalgia.
It was a chance to reconnect with old friends, relive cherished memories, and show the world that sometimes, love could find its way back, even when all hope seemed lost.
Walking hand in hand into the school reunion together was a statement that no one expected. Your presence together was a surprise to all your old classmates. While you and Wooyoung had been a couple for most of your school years, everyone knew about your painful breakup on graduation day.
The sight of you two together again caught everyone off guard.
Whispers and surprised glances followed you both as you entered the venue. Old friends and classmates couldn't help but comment on how you had reunited, expressing their astonishment at seeing you as a couple once more.
You navigated through the crowd, greeting old friends and engaging in conversations. All the while, there was an undeniable aura of curiosity and intrigue surrounding your relationship.
As the two of you mingled around, you couldn't escape the teasing and playful jabs that came your way. Some of your friends had been firmly on your side during the painful breakup years ago, and now, they couldn't resist taking a few indirect jabs at Wooyoung for the hurt he had caused you.
Amid the laughter and nostalgia, they warned him not to hurt you again, albeit in a lighthearted tone. Before you had a chance to come to his defence, Wooyoung took the initiative to address the elephant in the room.
Surrounded by the chatter of your old friends, he took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on you, and then addressed the group with a touch of nervousness in his voice, "I know you've probably all heard about what happened between us back then, and there's no denying that I messed up big time. I hurt her, and for that, I can't apologise enough."
Your friends and classmates exchanged glances, some nodding in agreement while others waited to hear what he had to say next.
"But today, I want to make a promise, not just to her but to all of you who care about her. I promise that I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to her, showing her the love and respect she deserves." As he spoke, you could see the sincerity in his eyes, and the surprise on the faces of your friends gradually turned into admiration.
"Well, you better keep that promise, Wooyoung. We're all watching, you know!" One of your friends chimed in playfully.
Your boyfriend smiled, "I wouldn't have it any other way. I know I have a lot of work to do, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes."
Another friend added with a smirk, "That's a good start, Wooyoung. Just remember, actions speak louder than words!"
The atmosphere lightened up as everyone joined in with their friendly banter. Wooyoung's heartfelt promise had not only taken you by surprise but had also won over your friends, showing them that he was genuinely committed to making things right.
As you looked at him, your heart swelled with a mix of emotions—forgiveness, hope, and the overwhelming feeling that your love story was finally on the path it was meant to follow.
The reunion had been a whirlwind of laughter, reminiscing, and catching up with old friends.
As the centre of attention, you and Wooyoung found yourselves in the spotlight, surrounded by friends eager to hear your stories and experiences since graduation. It was heartwarming to see familiar faces again, but it also felt overwhelming at times.
In search of a brief escape from the lively atmosphere, you gently tugged his hand, leading him toward a balcony just a few steps away from the bustling hall. The night air was cool and refreshing against your skin, providing a welcome respite from the warmth of the gathering.
Wooyoung willingly followed you, his eyes never leaving your face.
The quietude outside offered a stark contrast to the animated conversations and laughter inside. Out here, the distant sounds of the city were a soothing backdrop to your thoughts.
He wrapped his arms around you, holding you close from behind, his chin resting on your shoulder as you both looked out over the town. You took the chance to speak your mind, still touched by his promise, "You know, what you said back there meant a lot to me, Woo."
"Get used to it, babe. There will be plenty more cheesy words where that came from. I plan to annoy you with them for the rest of your life." You laughed softly, feeling the warmth of his embrace and the love in his words.
"I can't wait for you to annoy me forever."
He finally turned you around in his arms, his gaze softening as he looked into your eyes. His voice was tender as he spoke, "I love you, babe. More than anything."
Before you could respond, his lips found yours in a sweet, gentle kiss. The world around you seemed to fade away as you melted into each other's embrace. It was a kiss filled with all the words you couldn't express, a promise of love, forgiveness, and a future together. The years of longing, the pain of separation, and the joy of rediscovery were all encapsulated in that single kiss.
Tears welled up in your eyes, but they were tears of happiness, gratitude, and the overwhelming feeling that, finally, you were exactly where you were meant to be.
Laughter and catcalls from your friends inside the hall pulled you both back to reality. They hadn't been too discreet about watching your balcony rendezvous.
"Hey, lovebirds! Save the show for later!"
With shared laughter, you pulled away, your hearts full of happiness and gratitude. As you returned to your friends, you couldn't help but feel that your love had come full circle and that this time, it was stronger and more enduring than ever before.
The two of you wore genuine smiles as you demonstrated that love could indeed find its way back, even after years of separation.
Your presence together spoke volumes, reminding everyone that sometimes, love could be rekindled, and old flames could burn brighter than ever before.

I'm realising that my oneshots are gradually getting longer and longer lmao. Anyway, I hope y'all enjoyed this one!
This took me quite some time to finish. I worked on this bit by bit in between breaks from my assignments and thesis, so I do apologise if certain parts might've appeared somewhat awkward(?).
As always, thank you for reading and let me know your thoughts! <3

Imagine thinking you have the perfect relationship but then out of the blue your boyfriend Hongjoong dumps you! Ateez are just as shocked as you and San and Seonghwa take it upon themselves to find out what’s going on with their captain.
Tumblr media
To you, it was just a normal Friday. You finished work and headed home to do some food shopping and get things ready for your weekly dinner with your boyfriend Hongjoong. You'd only been home half an hour when the door went, you weren't expecting Hongjoong for another hour so were surprised when you opened the door to find him there. "Hongjoong! What are you doing here I thought you had work until late!" you cried hugging him and you didn't notice but he hardly hugged you back. "I came by because I have to tell you something...you haven't started cooking dinner yet have you?". You shook your head "no but if you're hungry I can go get it started?". Hongjoong shook his head "no that won't be necessary, Y/n I need to tell you something so can we go sit down?". You nodded leading Hongjoong to the living room and turned to face him "so what's up?". "Y/n we need to break up" Hongjoong said and just like that everything changed. To you, the past few years had been happy and fun. You worked as a dancer and danced with Ateez several times which is how you met Hongjoong. He asked you out after your second time working with Ateez and you'd been together ever since. You were just one year older than him, both loved music and were from towns really close to each other. You got along well and were very compatible. Hongjoong claimed nobody could make him laugh like you could and you told him nobody made you feel as loved as him. That's why this was all such a shock, to you everything was fine but Hongjoong said it wasn't about you. "The truth is I've met someone else and I was to pursue it" Hongjoong told you and you struggled to process what he was saying. "Oh...okay" you found yourself saying and Hongjoong carried on "it's nothing you've done wrong I just don't want to hurt you so want to end it". "Thank you?" you asked confused and it came out a lot more sarcastic than you meant it. That was the only time Hongjoong looked you in the eye, to see if you were angry at him. When he realised you were just confused he quickly wrapped it up, grabbed some of his stuff and passed you a bag of things you'd left at his. He left wishing you well and you stared at the door confused, wondering how everything had changed in the space of 15 minutes.
You of course felt very rejected and upset by what happened. Your confidence was shaken and even though Hongjoong said it was nothing to do with you all you could do was wonder what this girl had that you didn't. It must be pretty special to make your boyfriend of nearly 3 years leave you so suddenly and it took you months to get passed that. 4 months after your breakup you were finally feeling a little better and threw yourself into your work. You worked for a dancer agency where companies would hire you for music videos but it had always been your dream to work for one of the big three companies as a dancer and you finally accomplished that. SM hired you as an official dancer and you couldn't be happier! It would further your career so much and also meant you would never have to run into Hongjoong. You were offered a job dancing for Ateez a few weeks ago and turned it down realising you could never dance for Ateez again. So this made you feel so much more stable and powerful. You had your own company now and felt protected by that! However, idol interactions were becoming more and more common and it didn't take long for some familiar faces to appear. When they told you Seonghwa and San would be coming to do the Rover challenge your initial feeling was excitement because you knew how much the boys idolised Kai. Then you began to worry as the situation dawned on you. You hadn't spoken to any of Ateez since you broke up which was sad because you'd become close friends with the guys over the years. You missed them and did feel their loss as well as Hongjoong's. You'd never get to find out if Yeosang liked that book you’d discussed and you thought of Yunho every time a new superhero movie came out. So you'd be coming face to face with 2 of Hongjoong's members for the first time since the breakup with all these unfinished feelings in the mix. It would be awkward to say the least but you just hoped the boys wouldn't refuse to work with you or do anything that your new boss might see as a red flag. The boys entered the room and you and the other dancer clapped and bowed. Judging from the look on their faces they'd been warned it would be you and they bowed back awkwardly. You were one of the more experienced dancers so took the lead teaching them the choreo. San and Seonghwa were in professional mode and listened to you dutifully. They got the choreo pretty quickly and the manager nipped back asking if you could take the boys to Kai. Your fellow dancer asked if you could do it alone so she could go rest and you agreed knowing she'd done a long shift. So it was you and the boys. You walked in awkward silence until you reached the room. "Kai will meet you in here” you said showing them to a small office "you'll do the dance on the steps outside". San and Seonghwa nodded. You noticed San was a little more friendly towards you whereas Seonghwa couldn't even meet your eye. You were sat in silence for a few seconds before San spoke "so how are you Y/n?". "I'm good, enjoying being at SM". San nodded "it was your dream job right?". You nodded thinking of how many amazing groups you'd seen already "yes...I still can't believe it". "Well you deserve it" San said with a kind smile and you smiled back. "How are both of you?" you asked "excited to be performing with Kai I imagine". At that both boys laughed and nodded. "Very excited" Seonghwa said and San nodded "but nervous!". You smiled "don't be, you're great dancers and he's super nice. You'll have fun". The guys nodded and Seonghwa finally looked at you. "I'm sorry we've been distant...or that I've been distant. It's just awkward you know?". You nodded "don't worry I get we can't get friends but I still think of you all fondly. I have no bad feelings towards you guys, him or the other girl". The guys nodded when the door opened and Kai appeared. You bowed to him and then left, considering the day a success. It was only when the boys were in the car heading back to practice that they thought about your words. "What did Y/n mean by other girl?" San asked and Seonghwa paused "I was just thinking that...maybe she meant the other members?". "But she said girl not guys" and Seonghwa nodded "yeah you're right, I have no idea what she meant". Both boys were confused by it but didn't stress over it too much. That weekend all the guys got together for some drinks and after a few San mentioned they'd seen you to Hongjoong. "Oh really?" he asked "how is she?". "She looked good, right Seonghwa?" San said. Hongjoong looked over to his friend and Seonghwa felt guilty. "Yes, she's enjoying her new job there". "That's good" Hongjoong said and went to change the subject but San wasn't done. "She said the strangest thing when we were there. "Oh and what was that?" Hongjoong asked. "she said she had no hard feelings towards us, you or the other girl. "Other girl?" Yunho echoed "what on earth does that mean?". Seonghwa watched Hongjoong as more guys got involved and he saw how uncomfortable the boy was. Something was up. "Who else could she mean? Our partners? Our mothers?" Wooyoung asked. "No she said girl specifically!" San said and Hongjoong sighed "can we stop talking about my ex please? Who knows why she said that but we don't need to sit around discussing it!". Everyone went quiet at Hongjoong's sudden outburst because it had been so unexpected. One minute he was casually chatting about you and the next he was upset? The guys just nodded though, guessing it was a sensitive topic and moved on so as to not upset Hongjoong but that didn't stop them being suspicious. Afterwards, when all the younger members had headed off to bed Seonghwa and Hongjoong were tidying up. Hongjoong was in a pretty good mood so Seonghwa thought he'd broach the subject. "So you really don't know who Y/n was referring to then when she said the other person? You're not seeing some other girl?". Immediately Hongjoong's posture changed and Seonghwa saw the smile leave his face. "No" he said harshly "why do you care anyway?". "I don't I was just wondering" Seonghwa shrugged and Hongjoong nodded. They cleaned the rest of the room in silence. After that Seonghwa was even more convinced Hongjoong wasn't telling them something and he told San as much. "Okay so he's keeping some secret about Y/n, so?". "So don't you want to know what it is?" Seonghwa asked. San paused "I don't know, they've already broken up and what use is there in bringing up the past". "You're right but come on there's been something dodgy about their breakup from day one! They were so happy together and next Hongjoong has broken up with her and won't tell us why". "Didn't we all think it was cheating or something like that?" San asked. Seonghwa nodded "yes but I never believed Y/n would ever do that and when we saw her she didn't look ashamed or embarrassed just more nervous". San nodded "that is true...but why else would Hongjoong break up with her so suddenly?". Seonghwa paused and San noticed his expression "no Hongjoong wouldn't be the one to cheat". "I know that but it would explain why Hongjoong was so cagey about their breakup and why Y/n said other girl". San sighed "I just can't believe Hongjoong would do that". "I know which is why I think there must be something else we're not thinking of" Seonghwa said. San nodded"I don't know but something's not right". Seonghwa agreed "and we need to find out what". On their next day off, San and Seonghwa lied to the guys saying they had plans and then came to the SM building to find you. They told the person at the desk they knew you and had something to give you. Luckily they recognised them as the idols from the other week and let them in. Once in the building they both wandered around hopelessly lost and were arguing quietly when who found them but their idol, Kai. "Hey!" Kai said and then it seemed to dawn on him these two weren't usually here. "What brings you guys here?" he asked and as all the best lies had some truth in them, San was honest. "We're looking for Y/n, when we were here last time she lent us this great fitness book and we want to give it her back". Kai nodded "no worries, do you want me to give it to her?". "No!" Seonghwa said and then paused as Kai was getting more and more suspicious, luckily San's quick thinking saved them again. "What Seonghwa means if he'd prefer to give it her as an excuse to see her again, I'm sure you can guess why" San said smirking at Seonghwa whose eyes widened and his cheeks went pink. That confirmed it for Kai who smiled "hah I can, Y/n is probably downstairs in the dance studio" Kai explained "if anyone asks say I sent you". The guys thanked Kai and quickly hurried to the studio. They spotted you immediately and worried about disturbing the practice but luckily it seemed like a pretty chill one. So the guys stood by the door waving to you and you spotted them and came outside "hey what are you guys doing here? Is everything and everyone okay?". San nodded "yeah everyone's fine we just had a question for you". "And you came all the way here to ask it me?" you asked and Seonghwa nodded "we're sorry to disturb you but couldn't think of another way to contact you. Y/n what did you mean the other week when you said you didn't hold any hard feelings to us, Hongjoong or the other girl". You paused "to his new girlfriend of course" and their jaws dropped. "No!" San said still in disbelief and Seonghwa went pale. You noted their expression and paused "are you two okay?". "Y/n did Hongjoong really cheat on you?" San asked and you shook your head rapidly. "What? No! Atleast I don't think so...he told me he had feelings for another girl and broke up with me to be with her. You didn't know?". "No!" San said and Seonghwa frowned because this still didn't make sense. "You're sure he said that?" Seonghwa asked and you nodded "trust me I wish I could forget him telling me he's leaving me for another woman". "Well that's odd" San said "we haven't met any new partner". You shrugged "maybe they've broken up or he's keeping her a secret. Either way I just meant I don't hold anything against her...sorry that's the choreographer that's just walked into the room. I've got to go" you said and Seonghwa and San thanked you for talking to them before watching you go. "What the fuck?" San asked and Seonghwa shrugged "I have no idea". Seonghwa knew he'd annoyed Hongjoong with his comments about you but figured one more wouldn't hurt. "So did you lie to Y/n about having a new girlfriend or...?" he asked the second he and San got home and both boys froze. Hongjoong looked at him "you spoke to Y/n?". "Yeah because you were clearly hiding something" San said. Hongjoong shook his head "I can't believe you'd go behind my back like that. What about trust?". "Well we weren't really betraying you" San said "Y/n said it to us and we asked her what she meant when you clearly weren't being honest. You want to talk about trust hyung honesty is included in that?". "You want honesty? Fine but you're not going to like it!" Hongjoong said "yes when I broke up with Y/n I said it was because I'd met someone else when I hadn't". "But why?" Seonghwa asked. "Because of this" Hongjoong said scrolling on his phone until he found something and he pushed it towards them. There were a series of photos of the two of you clearly on some sort of date. There were photos of you sat at a table together, walking hand in hand and kissing. "I was shown these by our manager a few months ago. They'd been approached by a magazine and they managed to pay them off but imagine if they didn't. These could've ruined Y/n's career!". "So you broke up with her to stop it from happening again?" Seonghwa asked and Hongjoong nodded before turning to San "which I know you'll have a problem with..." he started and San nodded "you bet I do! Some stupid paparazzi is no reason to throw away someone who makes you happy". "Even if it will protect them?" Hongjoong asked and San shook his head "the threat was stopped and even if it wasn't you could've got through it together. That's what couples do! They support and stand by one another!" San said but Hongjoong didn't look convinced. "The thing is San you're romantic. You think everything is simple and love fixes everything but it doesn't. You don't live in the real world". "I don't?" San asked "you're the one who ran away from your problems instead of facing them". "Ran away" Hongjoong asked and San nodded "I don't think this is so much about protecting Y/n as you being scared! You were scared this would hurt her or that something would damage your relationship and instead of dealing with it decided to throw in the towel and run. You broke up with a woman you love without even telling her why! I call that immature avoidance". Seonghwa could tell the conversation was escalating and tried to calm it down. "San, don't be harsh. I'm sure Hongjoong considered all the options". Hongjoong shook his head "I didn't because there were none to consider. I thought what can protect Y/n and went for it". "But did you even ask her if she wanted protecting?" San asked "maybe she'd be happy taking the risk for you". That idea had honestly never occurred to Hongjoong and he blinked confused at the idea "but why would she?". "Because she loves you" San said "nothing's without risks but loving someone is a really good reason to take one...but you didn't give her that choice". "No because even if she said she wanted to take the risk, if we got caught and I ruined her career I'd never be able to forgive myself. I'm happy being the villain as long as she's safe". "Are you though? Happy I mean?" San asked "hyung I'm not trying to be mean just I think you made a mistake and underestimated Y/n. She deserved the right to fight for her relationship and you didn't give it to her...". Hongjoong had never thought of that either and he rubbed his brow. "Okay that's a lot for tonight how about we take a break?" Seonghwa asked. San nodded and gave Hongjoong a hug "I'm sorry if I upset you". "No you didn't...thanks for caring. I've got a lot to think about". After you finished work that day and you finally had some time to think your mind went to San and Seonghwa and why they came all the way here just to ask you to elaborate. They'd clearly been surprised with Hongjoong's breakup reason and you didn't know if that was bad or good. If they didn't know who the new girlfriend was then was there actually a new girl or had it just been a convenient excuse for Hongjoong to end things with you? Had he just wanted an out and lied to discourage you from trying to get him to keep trying? The only explanations you could think of weren't good and once again you found Hongjoong on your mind. It seemed to be better when you were at work as you had something to distract you so you started coming in early and staying late. You were there late one week when you heard a group of idols finish for the day. It was EXO and they all greeted you wishing you a goodnight before Kai appeared at the end and smiled at you. "Hey are you going this way?" he asked and you shook your head "no, my car's in the shop so I'm just going to walk. Kai frowned "no you're not, it's late and dark just let me drive you home". You tried to disagree but Kai insisted and you found yourself in his very nice car trying not to admire it too openly. You chatted about your days before, with a smile Kai turned to you "so how's Seonghwa?". "Seonghwa?" you asked "from Ateez?" and he nodded "yeah he came to see you the other day right?". "Oh yeah" you nodded "how did you know that?". "I spotted him and San looking lost and pointed them in your direction. He a good-looking guy huh?". You nodded smiling "yeah I guess..." and Kai shrugged "just if a guy like that asked you out, I'm sure he'd be worth giving a shot". You smiled "me and Seonghwa? no!" and Kai pouted "aww why? He's a really nice guy!". "He is but I...I broke up with Hongjoong a few months ago". "Shit really?" Kai asked "how long were you together?". "Nearly 3 years" you said and Kai gasped before frowning "so is Seonghwa trying to put the moves on you or...". "No! He was asking me about Hongjoong" you laughed before going serious "apparently Hongjoong's reason for dumping me isn't the same one he gave them". "That's so weird...even weirder than him breaking up with you". You shook your head "the weird part was I didn't see it coming. There was no build-up or arguments or tension. He just came home one day and told me there was someone else". Kai winced "I'm sorry Y/n that really sucks". You shrugged "it's okay it happened a while ago now". "Then why are San and Seonghwa investigating it?" he asked and you shrugged "I have no id...." before the sentence died on your lips. "Is that your house?" Kai asked stopping where the satnav told him to and you nodded. "Want me to come get rid of him?" Kai asked and you shook your head "it's okay, I'll see what he has to say" and got out of the car to head towards Hongjoong who was waiting on your doorstep.
"Hongjoong...are you okay?" you asked as you got closer and he nodded "I'm okay just can we talk?". You thought if you said no he'd surely burst after coming all this way for this purpose and so nodded "okay". Hongjoong followed you inside, literally following you as you walked around switching lights on. So much so, you nearly bumped into him when you came out of the kitchen. "Why don't we sit?" you suggested and Hongjoong nodded "yeah yeah let's sit". You sat across from him and Hongjoong took a breath before beginning "so I know San and Seonghwa came to see you". You nodded "they did, to ask about you". Hongjoong nodded "so I might not've been completely honest with you and San's convinced me that's wrong and you deserve the truth". You nodded holding your breath and then Hongjoong said it "so there was nobody else, I didn't break up with you because I wanted to date another girl". You tried to just nod and act like it didn't hurt he'd come up with some reason to ditch you but it didn't work. “You know you could've just told me if you wanted to break up" you said "there was no need to make a fool of me". Hongjoong paused "that wasn't what I was doing". "Wasn't it?" you asked "I feel like such an idiot saying that to San and Seonghwa. What did you think would happen if you told me you no longer wanted to be together? That i'd refuse or be some crazy stalker? You didn't need an excuse to get out of our relationship Hongjoong!". "That's not why I said it, I didn't want out of our relationship and it wasn't an excuse. It was something I had to do to protect you" he replied and you froze "what?". Hongjoong explained the photo and why that meant things had to end. You were quiet and he asked if you were okay. "I just don't understand" you said and Hongjoong nodded "well my company had paid the paper off..." but you shook your head "no I get the blackmail but why did you decide that meant we had to end things? Without even telling me either?" you said and Hongjoong sighed. "It was the only way I could think to protect you". "But who said I wanted protecting?" you asked and it was almost exactly what San had said. "So if I'd have told you, what would you have said? Wouldn't you have been worried?". You looked at him "honestly no? Hongjoong I know what I got myself into dating you and that the worst case scenario would be seeing photos of us all over the newspapers but your company handled it and we might never have had another instance like that". "But there was no guaranteeing that and if it did get out you could've lost your job". "Do you did all this based on a potential potential?" you asked annoyed and Hongjoong sighed "I guess yeah". You took a deep breath unsure how you were feeling when a question occurred to you. "Okay so why now". "What?" Hongjoong asked and you looked at him "why tell me now?". Hongjoong paused as if he genuinely hadn't considered this question. "I don't know I guess after speaking with San I felt it was my duty to tell you" he said but sounded very unsure. You took a breath "right well honestly I think I would've preferred to think you had some new girlfriend instead". "Really?" Hongjoong asked "instead of knowing I cared for you enough to leave? To protect you?". "What use is protecting me if you're gone? Instead of leaving to keep me safe I would've wanted you to stay so we can face it together...that would've done more for me" you said and Hongjoong went quiet. "I guess I got everything wrong" he said "I thought I was helping...even tonight and all I've done is make things worse". You didn't know what to say to that because yes he had but you knew Hongjoong. He was smart enough to know this wouldn't be a sunny conversation and he wouldn't have hurt you for no reason. "What else do you want to say?" you asked "why else did you come here?". Hongjoong looked at you about to deny it when he saw your expression and sighed "I forgot you know me, I guess I was...hoping you'd change my mind or something" he said. "About our break up? You dumping me?" you asked. Hongjoong raised his hands "I know that sounds bad, I've caused all this and then come to you to fix it but I genuinely thought there was only one option to keep you safe from my life. Then when San started speaking about how you might've wanted to fight alongside me and stick with me, I was very confused and really sad. The idea that I could've had that and then threw it away" he sighed "so that's why I'm here" he said looking at you and that's when you lost it. You shot onto your feet and shook your head "no Hongjoong! You don't get to come here and ask me to fight for our relationship. Not after you lied and dumped me, ghosted me for weeks, then reappeared and told me the painful truth. How is it now my responsibility to save this?". "No it's not!" he said also rising to his feet "I guess I'm asking if you would still like to fight for us? If you'd take me back?" he asked. His question hung in the air unanswered and you didn't know what to say. "I think I need time to think about it" you told him "it's a lot to take in" and Hongjoong nodded "of course! Just call or text me when you want to talk again. Or if your answer is no I guess you don't have to see me, you can just text me...unless you want to tell me face to face. Basically just let me know" he said and you nodded "okay". Hongjoong nodded "okay, thanks for speaking to me, I'll leave now. Bye Y/n" and he rushed from your house. The next day at work Kai saw you pull up in the carpark and waited for you. "So how was it with Hongjoong?" Kai asked "are you two back together again?". You frowned "who told you that? Has Hongjoong been telling people?". "Wait shit it's true?" Kai asked "Y/n I was just guessing, is that seriously what happened?". You took a deep breath of relief realising it wasn't everywhere and shook your head. "Well kind of, he asked if I would take him back I just haven't decided yet". "Oh" Kai said "why do you not love him anymore?". You shook your head immediately "no I do" surprising yourself at your instinctive response. Kai noticed and smiled softly "okay so what's stopping you?". You sighed "you don't want to hear all the drama" but Kai shook his head "are you kidding? I live for this!". You chuckled as he said that and nodded "okay but it's long and boring". Kai nodded "well let's do it right then". Kai came with you to your studio, walked over to the manager and told him you were going on a coffee run with him and would be back later. Your manager nodded and just like that you were both heading to a coffee shop. "Perks of being a veteran idol" Kai smiled "now tell me everything". You explained the whole story and what Hongjoong had broken up with you for. When you finished Kai's face was in a serious thinking expression. He nodded "I get your predicament I do, logically there's no reason you should take him back". You blinked at Kai's abruptness "you think?". Kai nodded "you have no proof he won't do something similar again and he was reckless and a bit of a coward...but I think you should take him back". "What!" you cried "you just said I shouldn't take him back". "No I said there's no logical reason why but logic isn't everything. Emotions and the heart matter too and I can tell you want him back". "Well of course I do!" you agreed "but just because you want something doesn't mean it's fated or something that's good for you". "And just because someone did something bad doesn't make them a bad person" Kai argued back "Yes what Hongjoong did was wrong but he came back. He's back now doing the right thing and I think that bodes well. Do you know how much courage that must've taken him to show up at your front door? To tell you everything?". "But I...don't know what will happen if I take him back" you said and Kai nodded "I know and that's scary but regret is way scarier. Plus Hongjoong lost you once, I don't think he'll make the same mistake twice. If you genuinely want him go and take him". At Kai's final sentence, you stood up abruptly and nodded "you're right, I'm going to go get him!" and headed for the door. Kai jumped up too "well I didn't mean right now we have work" but when he saw the look in your eye he shook his head "you know what go and I'll make up some excuse". You nodded "thanks Kai you're the best! I'll be one hour" and you ran out the door. The Ateez HQ was a short 15-minute walk away or a 5-minute one if you were walking as fast as you were. The doormen recognised you and so waved you through without any challenge and you hurried up to the Ateez floor. You had no idea where Hongjoong would be on it but headed down one of the corridors hoping to see him. You rounded a corner and heard a familiar laugh. Wooyoung was messing around with Yunho and who was behind them trying to get them to stop but Hongjoong? Wooyoung and Yunho saw you and froze and Hongjoong nodded "yes thank you for listening to me, can we be adults now?" when Wooyoung pointed. Hongjoong turned around and saw you "Y/n?" he asked jumping "are you okay? Are you looking for me? Is this about what we discussed?". "Yes!" you said and Hongjoong nodded "okay yes to which questions?".  "How about the one you asked me at my house?" you replied and Hongjoong paused "wait do you mean...". You nodded "my answer is yes Hongjoong" and that beautiful smile you'd missed so much appeared on Hongjoong's face. "You mean you'll take me back?" Hongjoong asked coming towards you and you nodded "I missed you". Hongjoong finally reached you and gathered you into his arms. "I missed you so fucking much!" he cried hugging you and soon you were both crying holding onto one another. You both had your eyes closed so didn't realise the whole of Ateez had gathered until you heard a sniff. You looked up and saw all the boys gathered by the doorway and San, Seonghwa, Wooyoung and Mingi were all genuinely tearful. "Are you crying?" you asked and Wooyoung nodded "so? You are too!". "But it's my relationship" you laughed and Wooyoung cried "so?" loudly, making everyone laugh. "You're just too sweet" San said and Hongjoong shrugged "I guess that's true" making you smile and look at him. "What?" Hongjoong asked and you shook your head "I just never thought things would be like this again". Hongjoong nodded "me either but Y/n I promise I'm not making the same mistake again. I'll never leave your side to protect you again". You smiled "good, we're always stronger together" and Hongjoong nodded "fuck yes" and kissed you making all the boys squeal/scream. You broke apart laughing and Hongjoong shooed them "are you off work today?". "No I've got...34 minutes" you said checking your watch "want to spend them together?". Hongjoong nodded "definitely, come on" and he led you out of the door and into the sunshine.   Hongjoong never let anything drive the two of you apart again.

Exiting the KQ building, Y/N is filled with happiness as she excitedly chats with Hongjoong about the upcoming song for ATEEZ’s next album that he’s been working hard on. As an assistant for the Edenry team, she gets a firsthand experience of the creative process involved in writing and producing a song.
However, her happiness quickly fades as she suddenly stops in her tracks. Approaching her is someone who, not even three weeks ago, had his arm around her, looking at her the same way he now gazes at the new woman in his arms.
Hongjoong notices the change in Y/N's demeanour and looks at her with confusion. He follows her gaze and sees the cause of her distress - her ex-boyfriend, who ended their relationship just two weeks ago. The ex-boyfriend stares back, his eyes filled with a mixture of surprise and guilt, causing Hongjoong to roll his eyes in annoyance. He knows that her ex is aware of where she works and has no valid reason to be in this part of town.
As the realization of their breakup sinks in, Y/N's heart sinks with it. The memories of their relationship now feel tainted by the betrayal she had been blind to. After the breakup her friends mentioned the possibility of another woman, but she brushed them off, convinced her ex wouldn't stoop so low to cheat on her. Now seeing the truth, that her friends had been right, the signs of his cheating were clearer than ever. The signs had been there all along, hidden beneath the facade of fading love.
Hongjoong, sensing her inner turmoil, places an arm around her and squeezes her shoulder gently. His silent gesture reassures her that she is not alone, as he stares down the new couple with a determined gaze.
Her ex, to his credit, appears ashamed as his guilt-ridden eyes shift from Y/N to the ground. On the other hand, the woman beside him exudes an air of smug satisfaction, tightening her grip on Y/N's ex's arm and wearing a victorious smile.
"Jagiya, how about we try out that new restaurant for lunch," Hongjoong says loudly for all to hear as his arm moves from her shoulder to her waist, pulling her closer. "You know the one that you told Seonghwa you wanted to try."
Y/N looks at him, stunned and confused but she puts a on a smile and nods her head. "That sounds perfect."
As they walk away from the awkward situation, Y/N feels a wave of gratitude towards Hongjoong. His unwavering support and protective nature mean so much to her.
“I’m sorry,” Y/N apologizes as they eat their meals at the restaurant Hongjoong had mentioned. She’d been a little surprised that Seonghwa had mentioned to him that she wanted to try this restaurant.
“For what? Seeing your ex again? You don’t have to be sorry about that,” he assures her.
“He just took me by surprise. When he broke up with me all he said was that he didn’t love me anymore. I’m so stupid, I should have known there was more to it. She’s so pretty. No wonder he cheated with her.”
“I think she’s pretty average,” he tells her with a shrug. “You’re way prettier than her and he’s a fool. I don’t get it. If you were mine, I would never cheat on you. I wouldn’t even think about it.”
Y/N's widened eyes widened as her cheeks flush red unable to find words to say.
"I'm not saying, give me a chance right now. You still need to heal, but when you're ready and if you want to, I'm here and waiting," he says reaching over to take her hand in his. "I'd wait forever for you."
"I'm not saying, give me a chance right now. You still need time to heal, but when you're ready and if you want to, I'm here and waiting," he says reaching over to take her hand in his. "I'd wait forever for you."
Y/N's heart began pounding in her chest, thoughts racing around in her mind as she tries to process his words. She and Hongjoong have always been close since they met three years ago. He had quickly become one of her closest friends. There had maybe been a time or two where she questioned why she was with her ex and not him. Maybe it had been because her ex was familiar and safe. They'd been together since they were 18. He'd been her first love. They had their future planned together. Hongjoong was vastly different. And as soon as those thoughts entered her mind, they quickly left.
She could feel the warmth of his touch seeping into her skin, calming her racing heart. As she looks into his eyes, she sees a sincerity that she had never seen before in his eyes. In that moment, she knew that she didn't want to dwell on her ex and what he had done.
Without hesitation, she intertwines their fingers together. In that simple gesture, she knew that she was making the right choice, choosing to embrace the love that was right in front of her all along.
Smiling at him lovingly, she says, "You don't have to wait forever."

Hongjoong
You and Hongjoong only broke up due to differing career paths, which meant you two barely had time— if any at all, to spend with each other. As the years pass by, you’re much more stable than you were before and with a lot more free time.
But with free time, you tend to think about Hongjoong, which makes you wonder if he thinks of you too.
“Will that be cash or card?” The cashier asked as you had already ordered your drink at a local cafe.
“Cash.” You replied, trying not to feel pressured by the line forming behind you. You opened your wallet to find the cash you were wanting to get rid of but to no avail. The cashier began to get a bit impatient, already stressed about the line.
As you were searching more frantically, the pin pad beeped and a hand had removed his card from the chip reader.
“Thank you.” The all too familiar voice spoke, sending a chill up your spine. You quickly stepped out of the way as Hongjoong had begun to order and pay for his own drink.
With a friendly demeanor, he walked over to where you waited. By this time, you already found the cash you were going to pay for your drink with and held it out towards him, only for him to decline.
You scoffed, slowly retracting your arm with a small smile. “I see you haven’t changed.”
“I see you haven’t either.” Hongjoong joked, poking fun at the way you were trying to offload spare cash, rather than use your card.
You felt the urge to throw your arms around him, but it had been so long that doing so would feel awkward.
“Join me? Let’s catch up.” Hongjoong gestured towards an empty table while you both waited for your drinks.
You had a feeling this wouldn’t be the last time you saw him again.
Seonghwa
Your breakup was mutual, deciding it was for the best. No malice or sadness came from it, although you found yourself thinking about him from time to time.
You moved into a new apartment following the breakup and a year later, you were still there with your roommate.
You hadn’t heard from Seonghwa since your breakup nor did you really speak about him to anyone. He was just another thought in your mind that gave you comfort knowing your past bond with him was real.
You checked the mail while walking your roommate’s dog for them while they were out and started to head back to your unit, not thinking much about the moving vans outside as new people often moved in and out of the complex.
You headed up the stairs with the dog and slid your keys into the keyhole.
“Move slower! I don’t want to trip!” You heard the voice of a male come up the stairs located two doors from your apartment.
You weren’t sure why, but you wanted to see what they were moving up the stairs. But that’s when you saw him, Seonghwa. Your ex-boyfriend. He was on the other end of the couch he was trying to get up the stairs.
Once they were up stairs, you recognized the other guy, Wooyoung. Seonghwa panted, wiping sweat from his forehead before his eyes fell on you.
“You’re my neighbor?” You both said in sync. Seonghwa chuckled at the unison, walking closer to you.
“I was just thinking about you earlier.” Seonghwa confessed, momentarily forgetting the couch.
Wooyoung pinched the bridge of his nose, “hello? Couch? You two can talk in a few minutes.”
You grinned, “better get to it. I’ll be right across from you.”
Yunho
It was a misunderstanding that broke up your once perfect relationship. It happened when Yunho started to get back home late. Then he used different excuses every time you asked.
Then you saw him at the jewelry store with someone else, laughing and looking at rings.
Now, a year later after your breakup, with a somewhat mended heart, you tried to walk past that same jewelry store in an attempt to get over the hurt attached to it.
You managed to do so without breaking down, but your chest still hurt. It was a process, after all.
You entered a park an decided to sit on the bench in order to take a moment and breath, letting the peacefulness drown out your thoughts of Yunho.
That was until you noticed someone walking up to you in a hesitant manor.
“Hey.” Yunho sheepishly spoke, hoping you wouldn’t shoo him away. You froze when you looked at him, all of the memories flashing through your mind.
“Hey… Oh my God, it’s been a while.” You spoke in a quiet voice and tried to swallow back the lump in your throat. Yunho smiled a bit, sitting beside you.
“How are you?” Yunho asked. You weren’t sure if you wanted to lie or be honest.
“I—” You stopped yourself. Yunho let out a sharp breath of air, “I’ve been wanting to explain myself since a year ago.”
Right. You never allowed him an explanation. You were too wrapped up in jealousy and your broken heart that you didn’t allow him that.
“Who you saw with me, was a friend.” He began, digging into his pocket, holding a ring. “They were helping me find an engagement ring— for you.”
“You kept it?” You felt your heart stop. You were relieved, but very regretful. Yunho nodded, “I didn’t have the heart to get rid of you.”
He widened his eyes, realizing his mistake, “I mean, it. I didn’t have the heart to get rid of it.”
You teared up, feeling more and more regretful, “I am so sorry, I should’ve let you explain.”
Yunho wrapped his arms around you, noticing you were on the verge of tears.
“I would have never wanted to hurt you in that way.” Yunho comforted you, even if he needed to be comforted too.
“Let’s start over,” Yunho eventually pulled away with a much wider smile and holding out his hand for a handshake. “I’m Yunho.”
Yeosang
He was set to debut soon and barely had time to see you. But that didn’t mean he didn’t try. Even if it meant sneaking around or losing more sleep. He loved you. He wanted your relationship to work.
But as he was debuting, he was given an ultimatum. You or his career.
“This is your dream. Your future. I will still be here waiting for as long as it takes.” You reassured him. Yeosang tried to convince himself it would be okay. Which it was, but he wished you were there every step of the way.
And you were. Just not in the way he hoped.
You watched from afar, always there, but never interfering with his work. The last thing you wanted was to ruin his dreams.
Three years later, you were at your favorite spot. The place you and Yeosang always visited when you both wanted to go out but not with people around. You visited almost every day, even if you were alone.
You laid down a picnic blanket on a spot and arranged multiples of his and your favorite snacks. It would be your five year anniversary, had his company let him still continue to be with you. You still loved him and even though you knew the relationship was over, you couldn’t bring yourself to date anyone else. After all, you did tell him you would wait for him.
“Happy anniversary.” You mumbled, blowing out a candle you had lit up a few seconds prior.
“Happy anniversary.”
You snapped your head in the direction of his voice, seeing Yeosang. He looked different. Older. But you could tell he was the same person you fell in love with.
He smiled fondly at you as he sat beside you on the blanket. “You actually waited.”
“I told you, I would.” You wanted to hug and kiss him, but you were waiting for the ‘go ahead’ to do so. Yeosang stared at you, his eyes twinkling with gratitude that you didn’t give up after all this time.
“Good. I’m still very much in love with you.”
“What about your company?” You asked, heart racing in your chest. Yeosang smiled a bit wider, rolling his eyes slightly.
“They aren’t as strict as before. That’s why I finally came back.” He emphasized the word ‘finally’.
You couldn’t hold back anymore, pulling him closer to you in your arms, “I missed you so much.”
Yeosang wrapped his arms snuggly around you, “I missed you too.”
San
It was the worst argument you two had since your relationship started. Any other argument prior was minor or over something small that you two made up for later. At first, you thought this would be one of those situations but the louder you two yelled, the more volatile the argument got.
Within that same hour, San left you alone, crying and broken hearted. Within a few days, he came for his stuff.
And two years later, he came back.
It was raining and yet that didn’t stop your doorbell form ringing. You weren’t prepared for San to be on the other side, soaking wet and with alcohol on his breath.
“San? Why are you—” You shook your head, letting him inside and out of the rain before he caught a cold.
“I admit, I got drunk and couldn’t stop thinking about you so… here I am.” San’s speech slurred as you grabbed a towel to give him. San wrapped himself in the towel, shivering slightly. “I still hate you.”
You didn’t respond, knowing he was drunk and you didn’t want to argue— again, with someone who had one too many.
“I hate you, but why am I still so in love with you?” San whined, sitting down on the couch, almost missing it completely had it not been for your help.
“Stay here.” You ignored his words, although you can’t lie; your heart skipped a beat.
You came back with water and dry clothes that he forgotten long ago that you never got around to discarding.
San took the water, drinking some of it before taking the clothes off your hands.
“Go change.” You mumbled, wondering what you were doing helping your drunk ex-boyfriend.
San got up and went to change. When he came back, he looked tired as he leaned against the wall to cover up the fact that he almost stumbled into it first.
“I don’t hate you.” San rubbed his eyes. “I do still love you.”
“San—” ”Please, I know you moved on but let me tell you before I regret this in the morning.” His voice still slurred, leaning his head against the wall as well. “I shouldn’t have left. I love you. I never meant to hurt you. I love you! Why did we argue?”
“San, seriously. I would rather talk about this when you’re not drunk.” You blinked hard to hold back your tears. San walked over to the couch and plopped down with a low grunt.
“I love you.”
“San.”
“Fine. Tomorrow.”
Mingi
Somewhere along the way, you both fell out of love. It happens to everyone at least once. But you didn’t expect it to hurt as much as it did when you two actually broke up and parted ways.
Something so good had died down, making the person you loved more than anything into a stranger.
You’ve dated other people since the breakup. But they weren’t Mingi. Even if you fell out of love with him and he you, you couldn’t stop but thinking about him and how good he was to you.
It had been months since your breakup and you tried one more time— for now, to date someone and convince yourself you weren’t just trying to rid your thoughts of Mingi.
You waited for you blind date at the reserved table, looking over the menu.
Right on time, you heard the screeching of a chair being dragged against the floor. Looking up, you immediately widened your eyes.
Mingi was just as surprised, freezing for a second before hesitantly sitting down.
“We’ve come full circle, huh?” Mingi lightheartedly chuckled. You immediately smiled at him, shaking your head.
“Guess so. I won’t be upset if you want to leave.” You offered but deep down, you hoped he would stay.
“I’m hungry, you’re hungry.” Mingi shook his head, “and you’re my date.”
You were so sure you didn’t feel anything for him anymore. How untrue that was.
Mingi’s presence felt natural. Relieving. Familiar.
“Right.” You cleared your throat, handing him a menu. “I think you can guess what I’m getting.”
Mingi slightly smirked, glancing up from the menu at you. He then collected the menus and chuckled.
“Me too.”
Wooyoung
You two had a strong relationship. Never did you ever imagine someone else would try and successfully break it up.
It started when someone Wooyoung worked with became infatuated with him. Slowly, they worked their way into his and your lives and did everything they could to make you look bad. Even going as far as to frame you for cheating.
Unfortunately, Wooyoung believed them.
Now you’re left to pick up the broken pieces of your heart after being wrongfully accused of cheating and even losing friends in the process.
You were home, feeling as lonely as ever when your phone dinged and a message popped up on screen.
You had deleted his number, but you knew right away that was Wooyoung.
-‘Hey. I’m sorry I thought you cheated. I shouldn’t have been quick to believe it. Can we please talk?’
You stared at the message, contemplating whether you actually wanted to see him again or not.
You left him on read for the night, deciding to sleep on your decision. When you woke up the next day, you saw another message from him.
-‘I know I hurt you. Please let’s talk.’
You thought it over, letting your heart speak rather than your brain.
-’Come over.’ you messaged, hoping you wouldn’t regret it.
When Wooyoung arrived, he looked as if he ran a marathon, panting and sweating profusely.
“I’m sorry I didn’t trust you.” Wooyoung took a deep breath to control his breathing. You still felt the hurt, crossing your arms over your chest.
“When did you realize that I never cheated?”
“You had an alibi— Listen, I really screwed up. I don’t know why I didn’t just ask you first instead of jumping to conclusions.” Wooyoung apologized. He had a look of regret as he gave you a pleading look.
“Alibi?”
“Yeah. I was sent screenshots of a conversation about how the evidence of you cheating were fake.” Wooyoung explained, “I really am sorry. I really screwed up, please. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but at least… consider letting me make up for it?”
You felt tears prick your eyes but didn’t dare let them spill. “I will consider it. But just know that you really hurt me.”
Jongho
Your breakup happened due to lack of time together. It wasn’t that there was anything wrong, you were just both busy when the other was free. And feeling like it wasn’t fair to either of you, you both made the decision to break up.
After a few years, you were in the grocery store, going off a list you had been meaning to get to. As you walked down an isle to find the last item you needed, you saw it.
Only it was in the back of the shelf and hard to reach. You let out a sigh, reaching as far as you could.
“Agh! How far back does this damn shelf go?” You cursed to yourself.
“Hey, let me help.”
You were startled for a moment, but when it registered and you turned to face the person who the voice belonged to, you instantly stepped out of the way and let him take care of it.
Within a moment, Jongho managed to maneuver the item closer to you. You grabbed it, mumbling a ‘thank you’, and setting it in your cart.
Jongho seemed to have a look of hope on his features as he examined you.
“Wow, it’s been a long time.” Jongho commented, smiling slightly. You looked at him in exchange, your heart fluttering and hurting all the same when you thought of how much time had passed since your mutual breakup.
“Oh yeah… You look… great.” You complimented, meaning it. Jongho’s smile grew.
“You look… great too.” Jongho’s smile turned into a smirk as he teased the way you paused. You chuckled, rolling your eyes.
“I am so glad to see you again.” You spoke with sincerity.
“I am so glad to see you too.”
