Aperçu of the week:

Bad news of the week:
The war in Gaza threatens to escalate. In response to a drone attack on a US base, the US has bombed pro-Iranian militia positions in Syria and Iraq. More than 85 targets were hit, according to the US military. And Joe Biden made it clear that more military action would follow. It will not be long before Iran retaliates.
The attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on merchant ships in the Red Sea will not stop either. Nor will Israel's military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon. So will there be the feared conflagration in the region? That will depend on the Pentagon and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Between these two powers are the oppressed peoples of Syria and Iraq. They are as innocent of escalation as the absolute majority of Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the situation of the civilian population in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has announced that the Israeli offensive will reach Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. What the million of internally displaced people thought was a safe zone. And which, as German Foreign Minister Baerbock aptly put it, "cannot disappear into thin air". For Egypt will continue to keep its border closed.
The parallel negotiations for a cease-fire and the release of the hostages, in which Israel and Egypt as well as Qatar - the seat of the political leadership of Hamas - and the USA are involved, have also come to a standstill. According to media reports, there is no compromise in sight. The majority of Western politicians tirelessly remind us that only a two-state solution can permanently ensure the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine. Rarely has a theory been so far from its practical implementation.
Good news of the week:
While hundreds of thousands of citizens continue to take to the streets against the right and for democracy, the party landscape is also arming itself against the shift to the right. The last general debate in the Bundestag was hardly about the actual item on the agenda, the 2024 budget, but about clearly distancing themselves from the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany) - in rare unity among the so-called established parties across the political spectrum.
These parties are also preparing for the right-wing to remain present in parliament - like the Rassemblement National in France, for example. Currently, the aim is to strengthen the protection of the Federal Constitutional Court. The governing traffic light coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals wants to protect the guardians of the constitution more strongly against possible attempts to remove their power.
Following the experiences of the Weimar Republic and National Socialism in the Third Reich, the authors of the Basic Law built various safeguards into the constitution. These include the "eternity clause", which states that the supporting pillars of the constitution (human dignity, democracy, constitutional state, federal state) may not be changed at all.
The Federal Constitutional Court was also created as a new supervisory body. If the powers of this supervisory body were to be curtailed, the fundamental guarantees could be undermined. The examples of Hungary, Poland and Israel show that right-wing populist governments in particular are trying to disempower the constitutional courts. In order to remove their political actions from any control.
In concrete terms, the core tasks of the Constitutional Court - such as deciding on constitutional complaints or mediating between state bodies - cannot be changed by a simple majority, but many organizational issues can. Since, for example, the election of judges is not regulated in the Basic Law (under the protection of the two-thirds majority), but "only" in a simple law, the legislature could also change key parameters in its favor with a simple majority.
No majority government in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany has ever dared to do this. Because all parties have always felt committed to democratic principles. Until now. It has already been shown several times in the USA that the appointment of judges can be misused for partisan political purposes. A blocking minority would also suffice for a complete blockade here. And the increasing likelihood of this is no longer a dystopia. In this respect, it is a good sign that the largest parliamentary group in the Bundestag - the current opposition conservatives - have also shown themselves to be open to strengthening the independence of the Constitutional Court.
Personal happy moment of the week:
I cleaned the windows. Which I rarely do. And I still prefer to do it myself, because nobody can please me anyway. It's not just the result that makes me happy, but also the positive reactions - from my wife and yes: even from neighbors. Let's see if I learn from it this time and do it more often in the future. After all, I like to be praised from time to time.

...that Taylor Swift's otherwise elusive socio-cultural impact could have a positive effect. According to a Newsweek poll, 30% of 18- to 35-year-olds in the US would follow a proposition from Swift in this November's presidential election - that's more than 13 million votes. No wonder the Republicans are already outdoing each other with conspiracy theories of her being a "Democratic secret weapon". After all, the pop star has already shown a tendency towards Joe Biden in the past, but above all against Donald Trump.

...I am already waiting for next weekend. A little anxious, as the two main sporting events will probably pass by me. Firstly, the top match in the German Bundesliga. Between "my" Munich-based FC Bayern, who strangely enough is only in second place at the moment, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (Bayer who? Exactly!), who are unbeaten at the top so far this season. And it's only on pay TV, for which I would first have to find a suitably equipped sports bar nearby. Secondly, Superbowl LVIII in Las Vegas between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. This will be broadcast on German free TV, but in the middle of the night in our time zone. From Sunday to Monday. I'm just too old for that. And I console myself with the fact that, in my opinion, Usher lacks the format for the halftime show. Which I will of course still watch on YouTube.
Post Scriptum
It's the fourth anniversary of Brexit. At the end of the last decade, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland left the European Union. Former Prime Minister David Cameron had actually wanted to get backing for Europe through a referendum. The shot backfired and the rest is history: "taking back control" did not work out as the Brexiteers around Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage had hoped. Since then, the island kingdom has been in a political and economic crisis. Without gloating, it can be said that liberal cooperation works obviously better than protectionist isolation.

i really should keep a diary regularly again but i am not and i like validation so you're all fucking stuck with me!!!!!
-sometimes i am like 'this is fine!! we're fine!!!!!' and it's average! and sometimes i am like 'aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA' because everything is still happening!!! we're fine but it's happening!!!!!!!!!!!! my mom is getting chemo and it's a thing that's for sure fucking happening in my life!!!!!!!!
-they're pretty confident that she should not be sick from it. but this is a very intense phobia of mine so that's. a thing. in my head somewhere
-it's tough when you have 1) sinus issues 2) a breathing tic that involves sniffing/big inhale/a sigh, depending on the moment 3) developed severe anxiety with breathing last year that you are painstakingly working through 4) CRY A LOT 5) are not as active as you were between anxiety and three or however many years of a pandemic it's been by now
-sometimes i literally just cry because i keep going 'you're okay!!! everything's okay!!!!'
-idk about that one chief
-i feel a lot like i am breathing too fast or not enough and need to remind myself that i can breathe but it's!!!!!!!!!!!!! hard. and i'm a lot better than i was earlier in the year but it's still. hard.
-sometimes i wake up and within like a minute all the anxiety just drops back down on top of me and i hate that a lot :(
-but i get to see an ENT on wednesday and my neurologist appointment is FINALLY next week! and hopefully. that should work out.
-i always get scared doctors won't like me or will say 'well i don't see the problem what do you want me to do' and it's not like. they've ever said that before but some doctors certainly haven't liked me and i get :(
-like!!! you don't forget when you were a kid and a doctor didn't like you or thought you were difficult. even if it was only like once or twice. you still remember. or i always do
-i miss taking not otc sinus medication bc when i was younger i didn't have big sinus problems!!!! just sinus infections twice a year but that was because. i was In School
-sometimes i really really miss my dad. just to have somebody else in the house who can adult. who can take care of me and my mom so we don't have to take care of each other.
-he wasn't perfect and i think as i got older we wouldn't have gotten along. very well. but he was my dad and he loved me and he loved my mom and i miss him being here a lot because there'd just be somebody else
-and he loved to laugh and at least he'd make me laugh :(
-i don't think i ever really really let myself be upset about losing my dad when i was a teenager
-he had a handkerchief i loved when i was a kid and i carry it with me a lot and the funny thing is it's a fucking. bud light handkerchief???? but it has spuds mackenzie on it and when i was a kid all i saw was cute dog!!!!
-it's held up very well for yknow. being from the 80s.
-a lot of the time i just want Somebody Else being the one to tell me i'm okay and everything is gonna be okay. i mean it's still gonna make me cry to hear it bc i cry when people are nice but it's nice to hear it from just somebody else. -anyway i see her tomorrow but sometimes i autopilot and i don't say the right things during an appointment and i feel like i do everything wrong :(
-and i love my psychiatrist but i hate that he's out of network and expensive and can only see me once a month :(
-he did prescribe prozac (and greatly emphasized 'lulu. you don't have to take it. you can fill the prescription and keep it on the table and just look at it. it's okay.') but i am not particularly enthused about 1) the adjustment period (like. oh very obviously from the top of this post i CANNOT at ALL handle one of the side effects even for any length of time.) (i don't actually typically GET medication side effects but i'm still not fucking chancing it on THAT) 2) the idea that it might not work and i would have to change doses or medication and do the adjustment AGAIN 3) the idea that eventually that could stop working!!!!!!!!!

C'était ma semaine de vacances alors, j'en ai profité pour commencer à dessiner des esquisses pour une prochaine histoire.
Je ne sais pas encore si ce sera encore une fanfic biiiiiien remodelée avec mes propres règles ou une histoire originale (il faudrait que je me renseigne avant sur certains trucs, j'aimerais bien intégrer des légendes françaises et de mon coin mais, il faut que je creuse dessus avant) mais en attendant, j'ai gardé les noms et les apparences des personnages de 3H pour ces dessins préparatoires.
La première page représente le pitch puis, on a l'histoire dans l'ordre. Le premier panneau correspond au deuxième temps de l'histoire.
Dessins et "petit" développement du début de l'histoire sous la coupe :
Le pitch ressemble aussi à l'histoire que j'ai commencé à écrire il y a quelques temps mais finalement, je ne pense pas la continuer à cause de trous dans la chronologie. Dans cette histoire, Félicia et Héléna devaient être vivantes à l'époque de la guerre contre les rois sans yeux de Sreng, qui arrive l'année de 6 ans de Félix (sauf que dans cette chronologie, Lambert abandonnerait les jumeaux à la mort puis ils reviendraient, vu que j'ai plutôt envie d'écrire une histoire de revanche ou au moins une où les jumeaux vivent leur meilleure vie avec les conséquences des actions de Lambert qui arrivent dans sa figure). J'aurais également ajouté une histoire d'arrière-plan sur un personnage de la Guerre du Lion et de l'Aigle, ma Rosine von Lamine, afin de dire que ce qui est arrivé aux jumeaux (survivre à la mort après une trahison / tentative d'assassinat en absorbant la magie autour de soi mais, en y laissant un bout de son humanité au passage pour devenir une sorte d'être fantastique) n'est pas unique et préparer ce qui allait leur arriver mais, ça aurait rendu son personnage incohérent car, elle n'aurait plus aucune raison de rester du côté de l'Empire, elle se serait barrée avec le groupe de Loog sans sourciller et avec joie étant donné que ça aurait été l'empereur qui aurait commandité l'assassinat d'une duchesse devenant un peu trop puissante et revêche à son autorité, surtout qu'il s'agit d'une femme à la tête d'un duché très puissant avec un sanctuaire miraculeux très connu et reconnu.
Cependant, si je suis le caractère d'Héléna, jamais elle ne resterait aussi longtemps avec Lambert, elle l'aurait quitté bien avant. Elle a le sens du devoir et veut servir son pays mais, quand elle voie que rien ne fera changer Lambert et que tout ce qu'elle fait, c'est se ruiner la santé tout en donnant un père pareil à Dimitri, elle demanderait le divorce et rentrerait dans sa famille avec son fils dont elle aurait la garde exclusive.
Pour Félicia, c'est un problème de ce que sa survie implique. Félix s'en veut pour sa mort mais, elle est plutôt du genre à dire (et à raison) que c'était un accident, que rien n'est de la faute de son fils qui s'est contenté de naitre et qu'elle en est heureuse, en ajoutant que qui sait, sans lui pour faire une motivation en plus pour s'accrocher encore plus à sa vie, elle aurait peut-être fait une attaque mortelle avant. Alors, dans ce genre de chronologie où Félix ne nait pas à ce moment-là, j'ai tendance à la faire mourir avant afin de souligner que non, ce n'est pas la faute de Félix. Si elle survivait plus longtemps sans lui, j'aurais l'impression de confirmer cette fausse idée qu'il est en partie responsable de la mort de sa mère vu que sans lui, elle aurait survécu plus longtemps, et je ne veux surtout pas faire ça ! Donc, cette histoire est remisée pour le moment et j'essaye d'en faire autre chose, tant pis, c'était à tenter.
Ici, pour permettre ça, on se placerait plutôt à la fin du règne de Ludovic où quand il tombe dans un coma étrange dont il ne se réveille pas (que ce soit à cause de la tuberculose, un sort, un poison de Rufus ou autre chose, je ne suis pas encore décidé), Rufus fait lire son testament à Lambert, où il voie que Ludovic veut aller jusqu'au bout pour remettre en place la monarchie élective à Faerghus et qu'il voterait pour les jumeaux, car il sait que son fils n'est pas à la hauteur de la tâche de roi, et dit que Lambert épuise complètement Héléna - alors enceinte de lui - et Ludovic espère qu'elle aura la force de le quitter si la situation empire entre eux (voir son testament dans la partie 5 de "Tout ce que je veux, c'est te revoir" pour plus de détail, c'est résumé très vite fait).
Après cette lecture et malgré leur amitié, Lambert commence à voir les jumeaux comme des rivaux, puis décide avec Rufus et Gustave de les faire tomber dans un ravin pendant une sortie ensemble, tuant aussi leurs hommes témoins de la scène et faisant passer leur mort pour un accident, même si Héléna a tout de suite de très gros doutes sur cette version de l'histoire quand elle écoute les témoignages et récupère la cape de Lambert qu'il n'a pas pensé à jeter dans la précipitation, alors qu'il l'a coupé d'un coup d'épée quand les jumeaux s'y accrochent en le suppliant de leur expliquer pourquoi il leur fait subir ça et qu'ils ne veulent pas laisser Félicia et Glenn seuls.
Cependant, quelques semaines plus tard, les jumeaux reviennent, amaigri et faible mais, avec un pouvoir décuplé et une haine farouche pour Lambert, jurant de prendre leur revanche sur l'homme qui les a assassinés, Lambert devenant de plus en plus paranoïaque au fur et à mesure que la nouvelle puissance des jumeaux se révèle et semble se transmettre à leurs proches, que ce soit Félicia qui guérit miraculeusement grâce à Rodrigue, Glenn qui semble également avoir de plus en plus d'énergie magique en lui, ou Félix qui est né quand Rodrigue est revenu et a hérité de toute la puissance de son père.
ça, c'est si c'est une fanfic (une fanfic trèèèèès remodelée selon mes propres règles mais, fanfic quand même).
Si je pars plus sur une histoire originale, ce serait une famille de la petite noblesse - d'abord avec les parents (soit Aliénor et Guillaume), puis avec les enfants et petits-enfants qui se rajoutent - qui joignent les deux bouts en tant que médecin pour Guillaume, professeur pour Aliénor (on supprime le coup qu'ils n'ont pas le droit d'exercer le moindre métier à part les armes et la pisciculture dans cet univers pour le bien du scénario) qui grimpe petit à petit les échelons jusqu'à devenir une famille de premier plan, avant d'embrayer sur ce pitch avec divers manigances du / des fils du roi - profitant de la santé très fragile de leur père - pour leur mettre des bâtons dans les roues. Mais pour partir sur cette idée, il faut déjà que je me replonge dans les mythes, légendes et le folklore français vu que j'aimerais bien m'en inspirer (notamment si je trouve des trucs sur les légendes de mon coin)
Enfin, on verra bien comment ça tournera et j'espère que les dessins vous plaisent !

Bad News of the Week:
Serbia and Kosovo. Sadly, proof that the tensions that led to the Yugoslav Wars in the Balkans from 1991 to 2001 are far from over. The conflict over Kosovo is centuries old. The area has special significance for Serbia because it is home to numerous medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries. Serbian nationalists also see a symbol of their independence in a battle against Ottoman Turks in 1389 in Kosovo. However, the majority - then and now - are ethnic Albanians living in Kosovo. They are mostly Muslims. They regard the area as their country and accuse the Serbs of having oppressed them for decades. Formerly granted special rights have been revoked, for example. In February 2008, Kosovo declared itself independent, and since then the region has been up in the air, with NATO stationing KFOR protection troops there.
Now the situation is escalating again. Already last April, there were clashes when Serbs boycotted local elections in the region. In the process, 30 NATO peacekeepers and more than 50 Serb protesters were injured. The fuse has been smoldering ever since. Last weekend, a conflict broke out between armed Serbs and Kosovar police, ending in deaths. Allegedly, however, this was not an official Serbian military unit, but the private militia of a Serbian businessman. What nobody believes.
Now for days Serbia has been pulling together an unprecedented amount of infantry, tanks and artillery - at 48 points directly on the border. Of course Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, speaking to the Financial Times, denied that his country was planning military action. But John Kirby, the usually well-informed spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, confirmed it. "We are seeing a large Serbian military presence along the border with Kosovo," he said. This includes "an unprecedented deployment of Serbian artillery, tanks, and mechanized infantry units."
It is with some trepidation that I currently pay attention when a "news alert" goes ping. For once again, a cold war may become a hot one. In the middle of Europe. Because of the imperialistic claim to power of one nation against another. Geostrategy and testosterone. Frustrating.
Good News of the Week:
"Judge's ruling on Trump financial empire poses existential threat." was a headline on CNN last Wednesday. Donald Trump and his Trump organization had committed "financial fraud for years." Is that a surprise? No. At least not to Europeans. Who never understood that a windbag like Donald Jessica Trump could get away with such obvious lies for so long in a state of law. And then also leads the forecasts for the upcoming US presidential elections. Excuse me?
Finally, on Friday, Trumpist Scott Hall pleaded guilty to multiple counts of attempted election fraud in the Georgia trial. Trump is among the other 18 co-accused. I can't believe anyone could be so naive as to believe a bail bondsman would have completely independently committed the exact acts that were in Trump's playbook - "I want you to find the votes!"
The GOP seems to be unable to break with the 45th president in U.S. history. Various potential opponents, but especially the powerful super PACs in the background, are increasingly disillusioned that the candidacy is unlikely to be taken away from him. His approval ratings seem rock solid. But slowly I'm getting the sense (or the hope) - from across the ocean - that the legal manifestation of his constant misbehavior is having an effect on the American (voting) people. I've lost track of how many cases Trump is currently charged with in which court anyway. And it's all there: Fraud, Porn Star, bribery, Rudy Giuliani, rape, defamation, fixer, tax evasion - you name it. Seriously, a guy like that couldn't even get himself nominated for the Recording Secretary of a flower growers club anywhere in the world. And yet could become president for the second time in the Land of unlimited opportunities? The supposedly most powerful man in the world?
I fundamentally believe in the good in people. But there are exceptions. Trump is one of them. When I think about which personality would put the greater good above personal ego, I certainly can't think of him. So when there are again and again brave prosecutors and special investigators who stand up to Mar-A-Lago, the Proud Boys and Matt Gaetz, I pay them my respect. And in the end this guy is simply unelectable. Now all we need is for enough hockey moms in the suburbs and used car salesmen in the rust belt to realize that. He's not one of you. He's not anti-establishment. He's a notorious egomaniac. He doesn't have your best interests at heart. But only his own.
Personal happy moment of the week:
Hello again! The coronavirus is back: as soon as it gets cooler, the variant BA.2.86, called "Pirola", starts to spread. With new symptoms, an extensive resistance to the previous vaccines and practically without monitoring - because a test regime or even a data collection does not take place (anymore). The shock was correspondingly great when a colleague first called in sick at the beginning of the week and then submitted the information "COVID infection". I am one of the three colleagues who had the most intensive contact with him in the preceding days. Immediately, a colleague got rapid tests, all of which were negative. A follow-up test two days later also confirms that I got away with it once again. Lucky me.
I couldn't care less...
...about the political future of Rishi Sunak. The British prime minister, in office for less than a year, looks pale and erratic. There is no sign of leadership or vision. There are plenty of headwinds at the current Tory party conference: the Conservatives are 20% behind the Social Democrats in polls. The economy is not recovering, there is no normalization after the Brexit chaos. The migration issue is inflated and not solved. Climate targets are being softened, climate measures put on hold. Rail infrastructure measures are being cut, mobility with automobiles is being supported. His party's populism is becoming more and more right-wing, and increasing radicalism is dividing the country. Soon, Labour may adopt the old Brexiteer slogan "taking back control."

...I am glad that a deal was brokered between the Writers' Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Lasting 148 days, the strike was one of the longest in the history of writers for television and cinema in the USA. So my much liked late night show hosts will soon be able to entertain me with their monologues again.

For 40 years there should have been a worldwide holiday on September 26. Because the Russian Stanislav Petrov prevented the third world war in 1983. The computer in a Soviet control center reported an American nuclear attack. However, the responsible officer Petrov believed in a false alarm (in the end, a spy satellite was irritated by reflections of the sun), refused to trigger the nuclear counterattack and thus saved mankind.

D’une magnitude actuellement estimée à 5, cette nouvelle tremblement de terre vient détrôner, et de loin, les deux grands séismes précédents (voir notre article ci-dessous).
