Miracles in Gotham: Chapter 3: Unwelcome Discoveries (Part 1)

Hey, guys! This fic is inspired by @ozmav mav’s Maribat AU. Shoutout to @mystery-5-5 for brainstorming ideas with me for this fic.

Midterms have got me acting up. Despite the quarantine, I literally wasn’t motivated to write until the moment I could use writing to procrastinate. Absolutely brilliant logic. Truly. Thank you guys so much for the wait and I hope you enjoy this chapter.

P.S. For the sake of continuity, I’m going to ignore the Heroes United thing because that episode was basically a fanfic of the fanfic and as much as I loved the animation and the new characters...I’ve seen better plots and explanations for a lot of the similar problems in the Maribat fandom. Also Sparrow is probably a reference to Batman, anyways. Also, canon has just gone out the window...I guess...whoops.

Please remember this is rated M for a reason. Also, it is my headcanon that not everyone who dies during the akuma attacks come back. Of course, it’s not mentioned in a children’s show, but I’ve always seen the Miraculous Cure as a cure for physical, non-living objects as they’re easier to fix, and lives take a lot more effort and energy from the user to revive. And since Marinette is a child, there’s not going to be a lot of energy to spare.

To the members of the Justice League…

I am writing to you as Chat Noir, superhero of Paris and holder of the Black Cat Miraculous of Destruction, and partner to Ladybug, the official Guardian and the holder of the Ladybug Miraculous of Creation. I come to you with a plea similar to ones that we have sent you a year ago. The magical terrorist, Hawkmoth, is still at large here in Paris, France. If you are not aware of who he is, Hawkmoth is a domestic terrorist in Paris who relies on the power of the Butterfly Miraculous to create a physical and amplified manifestation of a person’s negative emotions, using the victim as a host, using magical butterflies as his form of transmission. These are called akumas. The akuma allows Hakwmoth to essentially get inside the mind of his victims and manipulate and amplify their emotions. We have been fortunate enough to have a failsafe in Ladybug, who can repair any physical damages, and even bring back lives, from these attacks. However, both Ladybug and I have reached our wits’ ends with no lead to Hawkmoth’s true identity. The people of Paris are suffering both from emotional trauma and the physical trauma of being subjugated, manipulated, experiencing bouts of amnesia, and even resurrecting multiple times. Hawkmoth has even taken to exclusively targeting a middle-school class at College Francois-Dupont.

Ladybug and I are aware of the risks superhero presence may bring since we will not survive a fight if any more experienced superheroes such as yourselves are akumatized. However, I feel that we have no other choice. Our Master has recently been put out of commission and the rest of our comrades have had their identities compromised. Ladybug is now the Guardian of the rest of the Miraculous. And although she will not approve of my plea, even your advice or insight will be of use to us.

Please consider our plight and contact us as soon as you can.

Chat Noir

Bruce Wayne was not a perfect man, he will admit. However, he did pride himself on his sense of logic and adaptability to most situations, as long as they stayed within the mortal realms of believability that is. Magic, however, or anything pertaining to the supernatural was out of his forte; in fact, he often liked to pretend it did not exist despite having acquaintances and enemies whose entire lives revolved around it. There was a reason he did not tolerate the prolonged presence of meta-humans in Gotham, after all.

He re-read through the email once, twice, again and again, desperately wishing that it had not been his shift to look through the messages that the Justice League received on a daily basis. Why couldn’t it have been Superman or Wonder Woman? Or better yet, Dr. Fate or Zatanna, never mind the fact that the latter was technically retired. Any of them would’ve made sense of this gibberish that was laid out in front of him.

Initially, he thought it had been a coded message. It made perfect sense, in his opinion. The only concrete fact he could dissect out of this nonsense was the presence of a domestic terrorist and how they were targeting some middle school students for whatever reason. His mind recalled the recent conversation he had with André Bourgeois yesterday. Even he had mentioned a domestic terrorist going after his daughter’s class, which was why he reached out to Bruce, since Bruce would be the most fitted to protect them with his resources, despite Gotham being the crime capital of the world. He nodded to himself; the facts were consistent then. There was a terrorist and middle school students were the targets.

On one of the other screen monitors, he had pulled up records of College Francois Dupont School for a background check using a VPN to connect to French service networks. Both the email from this Chat Noir (Selina would get a kick out of that) and André failed to mention the terrorist’s intentions with these kids. However, looking through the different classes, there had been a special note besides Mme. Bustier’s class that stated:

“High vulnerability to akumas.”

This was where Bruce was once again stumped. Of course, he really couldn’t deny the existence of magic, but accepting that meant accepting that the terrorist used magical butterflies as his form of attack. Bruce wasn’t a qualified psychologist or any sort of specialist, but surely magical butterflies could not give you emotional trauma, mind-control, or even as Chat Noir had implied, a means to murder.

Bruce scanned through Mme. Bustier’s class to look for anything that might be different from other classes. If he recalled correctly, this was the same class that André’s kid was in. He took note of the name, Chloé Bourgeois, and other notable names such as Adrien Agreste (who’s father was a fashion mogul and a model in his own right), Lila Rossi (a diplomat’s daughter), Max Kanté (a genius, and he noted to himself to see if that held true when the class was under his supervision), Marinette Dupain-Cheng (the class president and the designer of a recent rock album according to Jason who had obsessed over the cover for a few weeks before Alfred confiscated it), and Alya Césaire (an aspiring journalist who ran a blog called the Ladyblog).

Okay, he rationalized. While not all of these kids were significant, some, like the Mayor’s own daughter, would be prime targets for a terrorist, so that made some sort of sense in Bruce’s mind.

He sighed again, wishing that he had a cup of coffee or an energy drink with him at the moment. Unfortunately, Tim’s recent addiction meant no one could have it. Bruce scoffed underneath his breath. Alfred had really weird rules when it came to show “family support.” Tim was a grown man who should suffer his own consequences. Alas, no one argues with Alfred lest they risked his wrath.

Bruce hovered over the link under Mlle. Césaire’s file, the Ladyblog. Perhaps it would give him some answers.

As a bright ladybug designed website popped up, Bruce realized he might have been so wrong.

He scrolled through the website thoroughly from the latest posts to the earliest. He noticed a concerning trend where the later blog posts centered more around one of Césaire’s classmates, Lila Rossi, and shaky videos of a red and black spotted figurem and a black cat figure fleeing the scene, or fighting some sort of abomination that Bruce did not even attempt to understand. In one video it was the two heroes against a flock of pigeons, or a gigantic baby, or whatever else. Bruce had half a mind to dismiss the entire blog as based on falsities, however one of the videos caught his eye.

It was a video titled: “Syren: Paris Going Underwater!!”

That was concerning, considering a flooded Paris would’ve featured on international news, not just on an amateur blog by a middle schooler. Fortunately for him, the video quality was clearer, allowing him to watch as the camera recorded the scene of that day.

Bruce jolted awake and snapped to attention when he realized it was being filmed on a rooftop, and that the water levels were still rising as the video progressed. From what the camera captured, there were only a handful of people on each rooftop; not even making up a fifth of the Parisian population in total.

What the fuck?

Then, as the video concluded, gigantic swarms of red and white bugs (ladybugs?) filled the camera’s frame and when it disappeared, everything was back to what he presumed was normal. The video then faded to black, posting statistics that chilled Bruce to the fucking bone.

“Death count: 1.528 million Parisians

Resurrection count: 1.51 million Parisians

Injured count: 10 000 Parisians

Permanent death count: 18 000 Parisians

In honour of the Parisians who were not revived and were injured during the attack, the Ladyblog, offers our condolences, and will help in any way we can online and offline. The akuma victim, as always, will remain anonymous for safety purposes. Links to help organizations and donation funds to the peoples and families affected will be posted below. Additional links will be posted for available online mental health services.”

And, if Chat Noir was to be believed, some people had died multiple times.

After making sure the video was not doctored in any way (though that would be cruel to assume about a kid’s blog), Bruce sent Chat Noir’s email (along with the earlier videos from both heroes and an email from Marinette Dupain-Cheng that he had found) and all of the links he had amassed to his own computer in the Bat Cave before closing all the tabs on the monitors. Swerving around, he stormed to the Batmobile, eyebrows furrowed in solemnity.

Magic or not, whatever terrorist was plaguing Paris had a pretty damn high casualty count, and the only people that were stopping him were this Ladybug and Chat Noir people, who did not seem to be properly equipped (the Ladybug heroine was using a yoyo, for fuck’s sake) to deal with someone of this power. Not to mention, Bruce winced, their mentor was “out of commission” whatever that meant, with their peers being compromised, so they probably had no outside help.

And it seems, Bruce’s features darkened into a scowl, his dear friend André Bourgeois had a lot of explaining to do. Police department has it handled, his ass.

In the meantime, he was going to make damn sure the class under his care would have a relaxing reprieve even if he had to lock up every villain in Arkham Asylum himself.

Dear Diary,

The talk with Chat was a bust. I know he thinks I don’t trust him, but I wish he knew how much I’m trying to, but it’s not as simple as he makes it out to be...right? And of course I trust him with my life, but as the Guardian, I can’t just make impulsive decisions like going to other superheroes, especially when there’s no guarantee they would help us, or can even be trusted in the first place! And I can’t just reveal our identities to each other either. It would put Chat and the rest of the Miraculous at risk. And I really don’t want a repeat of Chat Blanc…

That future will never happen on my watch. I forbid it.

Speaking of other superheroes, I think there might be someone though, who could help us, even a little bit.

Marianne.

She wasn’t a Guardian, but she was a Ladybug user for a while and was really close to Master Fu. She must know something. She’s in London so she might not be available but...

I’ll check up on her today after class! If she has any helpful advice, I’ll be sure to share it with Chat too.

Marinette

Scrambling to get ready, Marinette fumbled with her pigtails and shoulder bag simultaneously, trying to make sure that her pigtails were just right. Tikki zoomed around, helping her get ready by shoving stray pens and pencils into her pockets. When they were done, Marinette rushed downstairs, swiping one of the freshly-made quiche along the way. Just before she exited the store, she turned back to give her Maman and Papa a smooch. Hastily, she then left the bakery, the bakery’s bell ringing behind her as she sprinted to school.

It was a mystery for most people, but despite living less than five minutes away from the school, Marinette was always late. Marinette liked to blame her Ladybug duties when Tikki asked, but she knew better. She had the habit of being late since before she knew the Miraculous existed.

To be fair though, Marinette usually slept in because she was exhausted from schoolwork, designing,

and Ladybug duties. Was it her fault that Hawkmoth liked making 3 AM akumas? Was it her fault that coffee- for all the espresso and sugar she dumped into it, and despite all those hipster blogs saying otherwise- did nothing to help her stay awake? Of course not. If anything she was a victim here; a victim of late night akumas and faulty biology.

Fortunately for her (and her quiche), she was actually earlier today than usual. She could see students milling around the courtyard behind the school. Some sat with their friend groups while others huddled to catch up on the homework from the night before.

Unfortunately, one of those groups was Lila and her friends. Lila sat on one of the picnic tables, talking about whatever grand adventure she supposedly went on or whichever famous celebrity she supposedly saved from a rare type of cancer or something while her friends sat around her, captivated with every word. Marinette rolled her eyes. It was too early for this.

She steered away from them towards the other side of the yard, where she could see Alya and Nino cuddling while finishing their homework. She glanced back at Lila, who waved at the couple before going back to whatever story she was regaling to her loving audience. It was probably because Alya and Nino hadn’t seen Lila greet them in the first place, but Marinette couldn’t help feeling a bit happy that they didn’t return her greeting.

“Morning, guys!” She greeted as she approached their table, sitting on the other side.

Alya looked up first. “Hey! You woke up early today,” she teased, giving her shoulder a friendly nudge.

“Heh, guess it’s my lucky day today,” she said. As she sat down, she began eating the quiche she had swiped earlier. “Well, almost, anyway.”

Alya rolled her eyes and smirked. “You live in front of the school. It’s your own damn fault at this point.”

Nino, who had been pouring over a worksheet that was due today, finally looked up. Upon seeing Marinette, he smiled. “Hey, dude. You’re actually early!”

At Marinette’s exasperated groan, both Alya and Nino fell into giggles, Marinette shortly following along.

“Keep that up, and I’m not gonna let you guys eat at my place for lunch,” she teased, wagging a finger at them.

Alya wagged her own finger, engaging in a finger sword fight. “As if your mom would ever let us starve!”

Marinette laughed, as she wrapped her finger around Alya’s and lightly slammed it onto the table, declaring her victory.

“Okay, okay, you got me.” Marinette went back to eating her quiche, devouring it before it got too cold. For once, she was in a pretty good mood.

“Hey, Alya, Nino,”

And of course, she just had to jinx it.

Marinette didn’t even try to join in the conversation to acknowledge Lila’s presence. If Lila wanted to talk to her, she needed to stop lying about everything; and with her supposed “lying disease,” that wasn’t happening anytime soon. She only wished Adrien was here so someone could sympathize with her.

“Oh, hey Lila,” Alya greeted, having gained her hand back and waved. “Ignore Nino here. He forgot about Mendeleiv’s worksheet due today.”

“Oh, I see.” Lila said. “Well, you know, Nino. If you ever need help with science, one of my cousins actually won a Noble Peace Prize for his contributions in molecular chemistry.”

Nino, to his credit, only muttered an “uh huh” before turning the worksheet over and frantically scribbling all over it. Marinette briefly wondered if Nino understood what he was writing down- or if he cared.

Alya perked up. “Wow, that’s amazing Lila! What did your cousin do?”

Lila smiled bashfully, and looked away, waving her hand. “Oh, you know, it was the discovery of some man-made element.” Marinette had to give Lila credit- she knew how to fake her blushes really well. “I’m nowhere near as smart as my cousin, you know? All the scientific words get me so confused!”

Marinette buried her head in her arms. Did she need to be here for this? She could just slip away? Glancing at Lila, who caught her eyes, she decided against it. Like hell she was letting Lila take away her time with her friends.

Alya laughed good-naturedly. “Oh, I understand completely. English is so much more of my forté, you know?”

“Yeah I totally get what you mean.” Lila stopped laughing as her gaze landed on Marinette. Only she seemed to notice the glare she gave her. “Oh, hi, Marinette. Glad to see you’re early today.”

“Yeah,” she deadpanned. “Hi.” With a fake smile, she robotically waved at her.

“Well, anyways I got to go. See you later Alya.” Lila said, waving her fingers before finally walking away. Marinette exhaled. Thank kwami. She may have been less obnoxious today but that was probably because of Alya’s presence.

Speaking of, the said girl turned towards her. “You could be nicer towards her.”

“She almost got me expelled.” Marinette had had this conversation with Alya many times before. At this point, her responses came like clockwork. She contemplated telling Alya’s threat back in Lila’s first day, but she really wasn’t ready for the backlash if Alya accused her of lying.

“Well,” Alya stuttered. “It was because she has an illness that makes her lie uncontrollably.”

Marinette was pretty sure there was no such illness but at this point, Lila had somehow convinced everyone it was an actual illness. That, or no one wanted to point out the obvious lie, including administration. Which would be pretty negligent of the school admin so she hoped not.

“Alya, if it was just an illness that makes her tell lies, pray tell, who put the test answers in my bag and the necklace in my locker?” she asked.

“Maybe, well,” Alya tried coming up with an answer but failed, thereby changing the subjects. “Look, both of you are my friends, and I don’t want to get in between the two of you.”

Marinette sighed. “Yeah, yeah.” She picked up the discarded quiche container and her bag. “I gotta go to class and see if Mme. Bustier needs help.”

Alya frowned. “Marinette, wait.”

“It’s okay, really.” Marinette assured her, before walking away. When she was climbing up the steps to the entrance, she sighed heavily. She didn’t really understand Alya’s logic sometimes. If she knew about Lila’s supposed lying disease, why did she put Lila’s trash on the Ladyblog? If Alya knew Lila’s lies had led to Marinette’s initial expulsion, why still defend her? Marinette shook the thoughts away, not wanting to get into that impeding headache. Lila Rossi was never worth her time.

When she reached the entrance, Lila was leaning against the doors, her arms crossed. Her olive green eyes were glaring right at her.

“Dupain-Cheng.”

“Rossi.”

Lila strutted up to her, getting uncomfortably close to her face. “I told you what would happen if you didn’t play along.”

Marinette stared back, unimpressed. She really had more pressing issues than this weird power play Lila wanted to play. Leaning back and stepping to the side, she said, “I already told you I’m not scared of you, Lila.”

Marinette didn’t spare her another glance. In some ways, she pitied Lila. What kind of life did you have that you were so desperate for attention you lied about everything, and tried to get rid of anyone else who called you out?

She really hoped Alya would soon see sense. Adrien had once told her to take the high road, and honestly? Sometimes, it felt good to not let Lila’s lies get under her skin.

Then again, when did Lila ever go down so simply?

VRAINS Rarepair Week - Day 1: Domestic/Adventure

Summary: Ema discovers croissants and playing games together with her boyfriend

Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS Ships: Hireshipping (Ema/Akira)

Notes: The floor is writing Datastormshipping: the week. It kind of turned out to be the "Playing Games" prompt later down the line, but it's okay lmao. It's not very inspired and I'm very rusty for VRAINS, but I hope I can provide good shit for y'all. It's kind of over the place haha. I just hope I'll write longer stuff for the next days, this one is really short. I think this would happen after the hypothetical show finale? Who knows, I just wanted to write something for this good Rarepair Week day 1.

It’s still weird to wake up every day and realize once again that this is what her life has become. It really is.

The weirdest thing for Ema was to wake up in a well-furnished flat to the smell of pastries. She was more of a cereals-and-milk kind of gal when living alone, because it was easy to make and didn’t cost her an A.I.’s arm to pull together and eat before delving into today’s activities. To be fair, that was also because she was always lazy to make herself real breakfast. Cereals did the job perfectly fine, why put it more effort than that in it? Eating wasn’t a very big deal anyway, compared to what she could use her brain and energy for. Hacking, spying, missions? Now that was the big, real deal. The juicy stuff, if you will. The adrenaline thrill from the forbidden aspect of it all and the rewards from it exceeded just money to buy cup noodles.

But now, this is all different. When she wakes up, she doesn’t have to worry about what kind of cereals she ate yesterday to make sure she mixes it up enough not to get bored of one flavour. Now, when she makes it to the dining room, she is greeted by a table with real breakfast food on it, whose smell is guaranteed to make someone hungry. With her sister-in-law gone to college, she knows it’s all for the both of them, thus why it’s little but still expensive enough for her to feel a bit awkward about the entire ordeal. She isn’t used to being rich yet.

Of course, breakfast is long done by now, since she’s on her laptop and he’s next to her with yet another order from his boss to take a day off or… a thousand, because he can’t be employee of the month every month. This is the only way they can force him not to come at work, so he gulps his pride down and she always laughs it off internally as not to offend him. You never know, with her boyfriend: sometimes, he is rather sensitive and irritable about some topics. That’s why he’s so fun to date, sometimes: it’s easy to make him embarrassed and the Winged Dragon of Ra sure knows how much she loves to embarrass people. It’s so easy, yet so fun: it’s all a question of finding a new creative way to do it.

By definition, Akira is the guy who is always serious, always straight and always stiff, too much so in fact. It took her a while to soften to him because of this: but when he shines, he sure shines. When he gets concerned for his sister, when he dares show a bit less pristineness, when he worries for her, that’s when she kind of melts on the inside. Of course, she’d never show it: the always-cool Ghost Girl can’t show she’s weak for anyone, and especially not her former main hirer. She knows she shows her own softer sides when they’re alone together: her messy bedhead hair, her unironic love for magical girl animes, her collection of pretty cards that suck in duels but are too pretty to pass up, her pink laced… Wait, scratch that one. The day Akira found those, she was redder than Flame.

“You look like you’re bored beyond your mind,” she asks him as she notices he’s getting restless on his own computer. His screen? His emails. Again.

“I hadn’t planned to have a day off today. How are you supposed to fill your time when you have nothing to do?”

“You’re making days off sound like a chore. That’s such a you thing to say,” she deadpans back, wishing she could be disappointed about the situation.

“Then, perhaps you could teach me how to kill time when we’re both here and free to do so?”

“You bet I can.”

Before he knows it, she has already put out a few games on her laptop to show him around gaming. It’s an old hobby that kind of went extinct with the rise of Link VRAINS and Duel Monsters in general, but she still practices it happily when she’s not on a mission for some money. It’s not because she lives with Mr Zaizen of SOL Technologies that she’s decided to be a housewife that does nothing all day.

These games, she has collected them year after year, torrent after torrent, and buying the ones she genuinely enjoyed and loved. These games, she has had some of these since she was a child: they may not be Game of the Year-worthy, but their pixels and music is still dear to her and she will defend these one-on-one in the pit. There is an excitement to show these to her boyfriend, thinking about how she may be able to virtually kick his ass in her favourite fighting game. She’d have to get out of her old console for it, though, but it’ll be worth it.

He asks her an infinite amount of questions about these games. God, the guy really hasn’t caught a break since he was sixteen or so, he seems to just be discovering what fun is on a computer. The games that get Akira the most interested are, without a surprise, simulators. Her hospital simulator, an old thing from a century ago or so, is the most fascinating so far, so they play it together. She has to explain to him the point is to make a ton of money and not just to cure poor virtual patients, but once she does, he immediately gets the hang of it. She’s the mouse and he’s the instructions.

“Place a dispenser here, it’ll attract people in queue for the doctor and it’ll give us money.”

“Put a fire extinguisher here, it’ll kill the rats and we won’t have to hire a new janitor to take care of that, then you sell it again or keep it place on another spot later.”

His advice was always good, it always worked, and then she wondered why he wasn’t into gaming in the first place. That guy had a gifted talent for simulation games.

“Hey, you’re actually really good at these! You played them before, don’t tell me otherwise,” Ema tells him as she cannot retain inside her admiration, and yet her frustration and jealousy.

“Never,” Akira replies seriously but with a slight smile when he notices how envious she’s getting. “But if you want, we can finish this game together. It seems like we form a good tandem.”

“Smartass… Yeah, works for me. Let’s finish that game with your expert advice and my,” she makes a dramatic pause before glancing at him, seductress eyes on, “professional clicking skills.”

That gets him to flush. Mission accomplished.

There is one thing to get out of this afternoon of playing: Ema needs to play simulator games with him more often.

Reflecting & Sharing...

The Anon yesterday asked me how to feel better. Given I’m not a therapist or in anyway qualified to give advice, all I can speak from is what works for me. So, even though I feel a little vulnerable doing so, I thought I would share with you the lists I review every morning to get my head on straight for the day.

Now, fair warning, I am obsessive and over the top. I know that. So this is going to seem insane. But also, this wasn’t a list I wrote one day, it has been added to and adjusted over six months. There are things on there that I skim over quickly because they are now habit, but wanting to keep them as such means being consciously aware of them.

When you look at it though, please remember that I am juggling full-time medical school (final year!), with a 30 hour/week job (out of financial necessity due to no access to student loans or family support, and living in an insanely expensive city), trying to get healthier to manage a (low-key, relatively harmless for now) long-term heart condition as well as my BPD/MDD, a distance relationship that is in its most challenging phase, attending DBT weekly, and seeing a therapist once a month...

I have a shit tonne of stuff going on. As in, writing it just now makes me want to cry from exhaustion but was actually an awesome reminder to ease up on myself. I am BUSY!!! So, I would in no way expect someone with less hassles to have this much in their lists. But this is what I review each morning to remind me of the life I am slowly working towards and the mental black hole I am trying to climb out of...

(And please note that my Clin Psych oversees all of these and will say, “S. Seriously? Calm down. Some of these need to go.” I also allow my head of clinical school to review these with me every month or so just to ensure that people who care about my happiness but are separate enough to be objective can say when it is too much or to dial it back for awhile)

THERAPY GOALS:

Doctor Andrew Hanlon jogged down the middle of an empty street. Without people or cars, it was eerily quiet for a Rochester suburb. Even the dogs were sheltering in place. Despite the deserted streets, Hanlon's morning runs were about the only normal thing in his life. As director of the Rochester Memorial Hospital ICU, it was a welcome break from the pandemic. Getting close to his home, he turned onto Park Street. The sun spilled over the roof of a large colonial house onto a wide lawn. Doctor Hanlon breathed deeply and for a moment forgot about all of it. But only for a moment. Then the troubling thoughts flooded back, uninvited and unwanted, like his merciless enemy, the coronavirus. As director of the ICU, Hanlon faced a snowballing set of challenges: insufficient beds and equipment, exhausted doctors and nurses, and lack of masks and personal protective equipment. A deluge of patients was fighting for their lives in a chaotic new normal. And without proper gear, the hospital staff were putting their own lives on the line every day as well. Hanlon felt his neck muscles tightening. The Federal government wasn't stepping up to produce enough protective equipment. He was righteously angry he wasn't getting enough support, but felt ultimately responsible for hospital safety. It was a double shot of stress that lessened for only a brief moment in the sun during his run. After a quick shower and breakfast, he would head back to the front lines. In military terminology, a front line is the part of an army closest to the enemy, and it certainly was that. His team, up close to the virus all day, was at especially high risk without enough N95 masks. Today, like yesterday, he would have to ask his medical army to go into battle without enough armor. That bothered him more than anything. Except for the death. That was beyond overwhelming. Beyond what he thought he was prepared for. Dozens were dying every week, quarantined and alone. Hanlon saw death reflected in the eyes of nurses, and in the faces of the families when he had to give them the awful news. Andrew Hanlon was not the only doctor who had to occasionally escape to the hospital roof, to grieve, and clear his mind. Then it was back to combat. Down the block a garage door opened and a dark green SUV pulled out and stopped. A man, sixtyish, stooped, with disheveled silver hair, got out and walked back into the garage. Hanlon recognized him as Harold Crumb, who had recently moved into the neighborhood. Hanlon had only a couple previous contacts with Crumb, both somewhat strained. Crumb talked incessantly about himself, interrupting every time Hanlon spoke. As he liked to tell everyone, he had inherited a large sum of money and bragged how he outbid other buyers and paid all cash for the five-bedroom house. Why he needed such a spread was odd as he was divorced without children and he seemed to be a loner. Crumb also pestered him for free medical advice. Hanlon was glad he had gone back into the garage and he sped up to pass, hoping to avoid him. But he was too late. Crumb came back out, carrying what looked like two fishing rods and a cooler. "Hey, it's Doctor Hayland!" Crumb yelled, laughing at his play of words. "What the heck are you doing out so early? Shouldn't you be at work?" "It's Hanlon, Andy Hanlon. Just getting some exercise." "Shouldn't you be in quarantine or something? You work with all those infected patients, don't you?" Hanlon thought, Just move on. No need to defend myself to this guy. But instead he said, "Well I'm keeping a big distance out here, and we take a lot of precautions at the hospital, so we're in good shape, except for the -" He stopped. Didn't want to get into hospital politics with this guy. "Except for what?" "We have a severe shortage of proper masks. That's a huge challenge." "Can't you just buy 'em?" "The Feds aren't getting them made, so we're bidding against other hospitals, states, and even countries. I had a big shipment coming last week from China that was reallocated to France the day we were to get it. This week the prices have been bid up way beyond what we can afford." Crumb came around the SUV toward the street, nodding excitedly. "Yeah, I hear there is quite a demand for those masks, isn't that right?" "Yeah, it's insane really. Shouldn't have to be." "Hey, it's a free market ain't it Doctor Hayland? I got no problem with that." Now Hanlon really wanted to get out of there. He started stretching. "Well I better be going." "Wait a minute. I may have something for you." Crumb went into the garage and quickly came back out carrying a box. "Here you go doc," he said, pulling out a new mask, still in its package. "I'll put it on the back of my rig and you can come get it. It's the least I can do," he said proudly. Hanlon said, "That's an N95 isn't it? How many of those do you have? I mean, could you possibly spare any more? Our nurses are desperate for them, really desperate. Anything you could spare would be a life saver. I could send someone over from the hospital this morning if you -" "No, no, sorry. I can't spare any more. No way. I thought you would be grateful to get this one. You know I don't have to give you any, man. I was just doing my part. How 'bout a little appreciation? Anyways, I'm heading out to my country place this morning to do some fishing for a couple of days, so, you know, I really don't have the time." "Ok, I get it." Hanlon said. "Thank you." Yeah, I get it, skinflint. Hanlon picked up the mask and watched Crumb go back into the garage with the box of masks. Must be fifty in that box. He can't spare a few more? From inside the garage, Crumb yelled, "Oh, doc. I want to talk to you about this wrist pain of mine." But Doctor Hanlon was gone, sprinting down Park Street, pissed off, a single mask clutched in one hand. "I just can't believe that jerk!" Doctor Hanlon said to his wife as he spread poached eggs over burnt toast. "I mean, how many masks does one guy need? I'm someone who really needs them. And my staff, with one mask a day, at best. You know, they're bringing in homemade masks now, if you can believe it. And this guy acts like he is doing such a big favor giving me one mask." "I know, I know," his wife said. "It's not right." She laid her hands on Andrew's shoulders. "But maybe you can find some masks on eBay today. Didn't you say one of the other clinics got some there?" "Yeah, maybe. But at what cost? The hospital doesn't have the funds to compete now. With all non-elective surgeries canceled, we're hemorrhaging money. Might even go under from all this." She wanted to say something to help, something to acknowledge the thirty years Andrew had put in to build the ICU, the unbelievable strain he was now under, the sixteen-hour shifts, and the uncertainty as to when it would end. And the heavy responsibility to provide his staff with basic personal protection, which wasn't happening. But she didn't know what to say. So she just massaged his shoulders as her eyes misted up. Five miles away, Officer Anya Mateo was finishing her night shift, another quiet night cruising empty streets. She had been on the police force for only a year, and most of that was spent training, and now patrolling a quiet suburb during the pandemic. No wonder she was bored. A dark green SUV passing her from the opposite direction. She glanced at her radar screen. Over the speed limit but just barely. As it passed, she noticed that a taillight was out. Minor, but it was something. She hit the brakes, u-turned quickly, and followed. The SUV pulled over and Mateo approached. At just under 6 feet, she was above average height for a Trinidadian woman. Not surprising as her father, a retired surgeon, and her mother, a nurse, were also tall. She spoke with a slight Trini accent. "Good morning, suh." "Yeah, well, it was a good morning," said Harold Crumb. "Do yuh know why I pulled you over?" "What? No, I wasn't speeding." "Your left taillight ha gone out. Were you aware of that?" "Ha gone out? What kind of English is that? And how in hell am I 'posed to know that? I don't see no warning light here." Crumb jutted his chin toward the dash. Officer Mateo stood unmoving, hands on belt, while her eyes scanned the front seat for possible weapons. "License and registration please, suh." "Well, now since you said please, I guess I can get them for you. Where you from anyway. Not from around here are you?" This guy could be trouble, Mateo thought, carefully watching Crumb pull out his documents. She took his documents back to her patrol car and ran the checks. Crumb, Harold had no priors or outstanding tickets. "Mr. Crumb, I am goin' to issue this repair ticket. Yuh have thirty days to correct the taillight. She handed him the ticket and he swiped it from her hand. "Yeah, yeah, ok." Officer Mateo drove off shaking her head. In Trinidad they would say, He have no brought upsy. He has no manners. "Oh well," Hanlon said to his wife, reaching for his laptop. "I guess it can't hurt to look on eBay. Maybe there's a reasonable offer today. Don't know what else to do. I have to get more masks." Hanlon searched for N95 masks on eBay and up popped an offer: 300 Brand New N95 Masks, $25 each, or $7,000 for the lot. "Are you kidding me?" Hanlon said. "Come on, you don't need to make that much profit." Hanlon drilled down further and found the originating location: Park Street, Rochester, NY. "Geez, that's near us. It's..." "What?" "This is unbelievable." Hanlon stared at the offeror's email name: HaroldCrumb1. It's him, our jerk neighbor, Crumb, the guy who said he could only spare a single mask. I can't believe it, but he's selling them. At a huge markup!" "This is the same guy who inherited all that money?" "Yep. Un-frickin believable." "You think you could persuade him to sell at a lower price?" "No, not Crumb." Just hard to believe someone could do that. But, right now, I have to get to the hospital." Doctor Hanlon would later tell his wife it was the lack of sleep that made him do it. Or the stress. Or the enormous responsibility he bore. Those certainly contributed. But it was death that pushed him over, this time way too close. And too unfair. One of his best nurses had contracted the coronavirus the week before, very likely because of inadequate personal protective equipment. Only forty-five, she supported three kids, and was one of the hardest working, and kindest, nurses Hanlon had the privilege of working with. That afternoon, she passed away. Word spread fast. When they wheeled her out, the entire ICU staff, to a person, lined the hallways. A few started to applaud, but there wasn't the energy to sustain it. Instead, quiet shock filled the ICU, broken only by the sounds of ventilators humming. And muffled sobbing. Andrew Hanlon walked three flights of stairs to the roof, sat in a far corner, and wept. When he had recovered, he took the elevator back down to the battle lines. That was when he decided to do it. Late that night, Hanlon slipped out of the house, silently, not wanting to wake his wife who would likely try to talk him out of it. His electric car made little noise, which was good as the neighborhood was even quieter now. He drove slowly to Park Street and circled the block. A narrow alley ran behind the block. Hanlon parked nearby, grabbed a flashlight, and walked down the alley, reaching the back of Crumb's garage. All quiet so far. There was a small door with a dusty window next to it. Hanlon peered into the garage. The big green SUV wasn't there. So Crumb was still gone fishing. Perfect. The glass broke easily, and Hanlon reached in and unlocked the door with no trouble. Seemed too easy. He paused and listened for an alarm, or a worried neighbor. Nothing. So, he went in and looked around. There, in the back of the garage where Crumb had stored them were boxes containing the 300 brand new N95 masks. "Jackpot," Hanlon whispered to himself. He retraced his steps, retrieved his car and drove back down the alley slowly, lights off. In fact, it was too easy. Should have been a red flag. But Andrew Hanlon was adept at treating respiratory failure, not breaking and entering. He didn't expect that some home alarm systems do not announce themselves with bold warning sounds. Rather, they are stealth systems, hard wired to nearby police stations, who can get a patrol car there in ten to twelve minutes. With no traffic, Officer Anya Mateo made it in nine. Hanlon almost dropped the box when he heard the sharp voice, "Stop right there! Hands in the air!" Then Hanlon did drop the box, raising both hands. He stared at the policewoman, pistol drawn, legs spread in military pose. She was tall and wore a determined expression. "Don't do anything stupid," she said, moving in. "Turn around, hands behind your back." From out of nowhere handcuffs appeared and she cuffed him. "Now just what are yuh doin' here?" Hanlon knew it was over for him. Over in a lot of ways. No court would cut him a break, even under pandemic conditions. And the court of public opinion would be even harsher on his career. No use in making up something. So, he told Officer Mateo everything, calmly, as if he was describing a medical condition. "You say you are a doctor?" Mateo said incredulously. "Why can't your hospital get their own masks?" "I wish to god we could, but it's not that simple, Officer." We just can't get any. We have to bid against all the other facilities. I know it's no excuse. But the guy who lives here has a lot of money, doesn't need all these masks, yet he is selling them anyway for an exorbitant profit on eBay. Not because he needs the money. Just because he's, he's..." "He's what?" "He doesn't see what I see every day. Death every day. Now my nurses are getting sick and dying for lack of protection. I would gladly buy them if we had the money, believe me." "I know about it," Officer Mateo said. "My mother is a nurse. It is horrible, I know. She's told me about the shortages, but -" She paused. "This is still breaking and entering." "Yes, I realize that." Hanlon hoped for some type of leniency. "Even if it is for life-saving reasons?" Mateo slowly withdrew a pad and started to write up the arrest record. She glanced at her mobile phone and a puzzled look crossed her face. "This address is 44 Park Street?" "Yes, I think so." "Dr. Hanlon, is this the residence of a," she squinted at her phone, "a Harold Crumb?" "Yes, that's the owner. And a real son of a bitch too." Mateo lowered the arrest record pad. "I know this guy," she said, "and you are right. He's a real piece of work. I actually pulled him over last night, early this morning actually, over a taillight infraction. This Harold Crumb is the guy hoarding these masks?" Hanlon said, "The same. I tried to get him to part with a few masks and he would only give me one. Said he couldn't spare any more. But he's selling them for a huge profit while my hospital suffers. I know I've made a huge mistake here Officer, and I will accept responsibility for it. But this just isn't right." Officer Anya Mateo stared at Dr. Hanlon. She could see the exhaustion on his face, and the injustice echoed in his eyes. And she also saw a bit of her late father reflected there. A highly principled man, her father would notice an injustice and tell her, "Just no right Anya, just no right." It was one of his expressions she never forgot. She put the arrest record pad back into her jacket, glanced around, and said, "Are there any more boxes of masks in there?" "Yes, quite a few." Officer Mateo unlocked and removed the handcuffs and said, "These masks are all evidence now, so we need to load them up." "We? thought Hanlon, but he didn't say anything, following the officer into the garage. Mateo picked up a couple of boxes. "Your trunk open?" "Ah, yeah, let me get it," Hanlon said. Maybe there was a chance. "You're not going to press charges?" "For what? Did you see anything here Doctor? I didn't." "No, Officer Mateo, I didn't see a thing either." A slight smile crossed the doctor's lips. When all the boxes were loaded into his trunk, Hanlon took out a handful of masks and handed them to Mateo. "You and your department may need them. If anyone asks, they came from me. I'll take the heat." "No worries, Doctor, there won't be any heat, not for this. I'm the patrol officer for this area. My report will document a minor garage break-in but the perpetrator had fled. Happens a lot. And I will deal with this Crumb, no worries. But let me ask you, Doctor, yuh took a huge risk by breaking in here. It could have been your career. Why did you do it?" "A risk? Yeah, that's true. But come down to the ICU and you'll see some real risks, the risks the staff are taking, up against this deadly virus. Those are the huge risks, Officer." Hanlon got into his car and rolled down the window. "And what about you, Officer Mateo? You're taking a big career risk as well by letting me go. I imagine the courts wouldn't look kindly upon you either." "No, probably not. But there are courts and then there are courts." "How's that?" Anya Mateo looked up at the night sky, remembering. "It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, there is a higher court than the courts of justice. One that supersedes all others." "And what is that?" "Gandhi called it the Court of Conscience." "Well, I can live with that, Officer Mateo." "Me too, Dr. Hanlon, me too," she said. "Thank you for everything you're doing and I wish your team the best." Dr. Andrew Hanlon drove away, revived and restored. And armed for battle.

That weird situation

I don't know if this is paranoia or serious suspicions.

My brother in law is a doctor but he has done a few weird things since the start of the outbreak. My family was reconsidering a family gathering due to Covid19 just before the lockdown was announced and finally decided to cancel it. My brother in law sent then an email to everyone saying that risks were "none." There were other medical inconsistencies. A second thing is about bringing groceries to my father who has a cancer and diabete and is 70. He would talk to him 3 meters apart. He basically put my family at risk.

About a year ago, my father was sick and he went to his hospital. He behaved like a hero saving my Dad and said my Dad didn't have a cancer. My Dad thought a second medical advice would be good but my brother in law was opposed to it. My father still went to a private hospital where he was diagnosed with a cancer. That created family issues that finally ended well. During this time, I was abroad and my sister decided to stop talking to me because she didn't like my boyfriend. I came back to my home country. My sister was really awful, as my mother but my mother is like this, and I thought they were pushing me to suicide but then gave up on that idea, thinking it was too irrational. However, I realised something important, my chronic depressions have been caused by my family environment.

At Christmas, the brother of my brother in law talked to me. He said he's convinced his wife died because of his brother. She was sick, she was in that hospital where my brother in law works, knew something about my brother in law, wasn't quiet, always opened her mouth. She died. Then, the brother got a job at that hospital because my brother in law for the first time of his life helped him. Still, they hate each other.

Then, there was the Christmas with my Dad's family. I confronted my brother in law. I just told him "I talked to your brother yesterday." That night, both my sister and brother in law started a campaign to criticise me but it didn't work well. My cousins were still nice with me. One of my cousin said "I think they talk on your back on the other side of the table" and I said that I didn't care. As I tried to reconcile with my sister for the sake of my father's well being, she managed to turn him against me and I decided to leave the country while maintaining a good contact with my Dad.

Since my Dad has a cancer, my sister and me we don't talk to each other. I got upset my brother in law who is supposed to be a doctor talked to my Dad directly with 3 meters distance without explaining to my Dad it was safer to not talk directly at all, only on the phone. I tried to explain it to my Dad who couldn't understand it and couldn't imagine my brother in law could put him at risk, saying there was no risk. I got upset and wrote it on Facebook, so hopefully my cousins would notice without me calling them directly, and could explain things to my father. My sister made my father read it (my Dad is not on Facebook) and the last words I got from my Dad was that I was a destructive person, he couldn't believe he'd ever have a daughter like this, he'd suffer until his last breath. My mother sent me an email to tell me my Dad loved my brother in law like a son.

I remember one day, my cousin asked how I'd feel if my Dad wouldn't be equal in terms of heritage. I explained what I knew: my Dad gave me a large sum of money to buy an apartment and there won't be anything else. If it's not right, I said my sister and brother in law can take it all. I don't care. I also said I don't think my Dad is like this and I could be hurt by this, not the amount of money, but the idea. Now, with his last words to me, I'd be sad if he'd ever die with so little love for me, while I tried hard to save his life but at least, I know I acted according to my conscience.

If I get back to my home country, my brother in law and sister would put me at risk. I have zero doubt about it. When I sent an email to ask her to explain to Dad it was safer not to talk directly to my brother in law she replied if I was so worried fir my Dad's life, I could take a flight and get groceries for him - knowing that I live an hour tube from my Dad and I don't have the strength to carry many stuff when they have a car and would just need to leave groceries on the doorstep. She'd push me to suicide. Last time I had this feeling, I thought changing my will would keep me safer but I finally didn't do it. I think I will.

Anyway, I've always known I'm safer far from them. If all they want is my Dad's money when he dies, it will be their karma but if I suspect anything of them putting my Dad at risk, I swear there will be justice.

Another thing to note. They also lead a campaign of criticism at my stepmother, I don't. My Dad asked me if it would be an issue if she gets a part of his money, I said of course not. He said he changed his will so she gets nothing. I said I'd respect his will but it's not my request. He said my sister agrees with him. He said he'd want to divorce although he's 70 and very sick and we're in a middle of a pandemic.

I think I did what I could to save my Dad. I think I was loyal to my conscience. I think if she gets the heritage, I really don't care. I think if he dies because of them, I'll sue them until my last breath.

There is evidence of the email he sent to my family, that he directly talked to my father during the pandemic, his brother's testimony, my father's last words to me (he doesn't reply to me anymore) and the reasons. There's probably evidence of my Dad changing hospital. I think the heritage would be their motive. I have a friend who works in a place that could be useful to find out things. If they hurt Dad, I swear there will be justice. If it's just about money, they can take it all, I don't care.

Another weird thing about him: he loves guns. More than a normal person. I hate guns. Well, not all people who love guns are murderers but it's a weird thing and in my country, guns are forbidden. I don't think he has real guns, but he has toy guns for sure that look super real and use to do that type of game in the woods every week. My uncle has a permit and is totally sane but I remember at some point my brother in law bought a real one but I don't know if he took it with him in his house. My mother opposed it saying there could be an accident, with the children when they become teenagers but she was criticised for daring to think her grand children could ever kill anyone. She told me and obviously I was so outraged that they stopped talking to me about it so I don't know what's the situation but that brother in law... Seriously, I'm glad to be abroad.

I've always had a very good relationship with my sister all my life and everything literally changed from the exact moment my father got sick. She never explained to me the issue of my Dad changing hospital, my Dad did. My mother explained my brother in law said he had no cancer but according to her, it was not his fault. For me, it is his fault because you don't say to someone he doesn't have a cancer as long as tests are not done and you don't oppose seeking for a second medical advice, it makes no sense. I never said that to anyone but I was already upset. I got literally paranoid when I was in my home country. I had the feeling she tried to kill me and kept all the evidence: the nastiest words ever when I said I felt depressed. As crazy as it sounds, it was what healed me. I talked to a psychologist that helped me to understand that it was unlikely my sister was a murderer, but that she clearly did not want me any good and I had to see this. The suicide prevention centre advised me to cut contact and move away as soon as possible. There was my mother issue as well, they're shockingly mean to me in my family and unfortunately, I grew up confusing love and suffering. Since then, since I understood this, I feel completely healed - able to move away from people who don't make me happy or don't treat me well - and resilient. My sister sent me another hate email and weirdly, I felt no pain. My Dad sees me as a source of suffering because I insisted for him to understand talking to anyone 3 meters away entails more risks than not talking to him. I feel resilient to face another injustice and also, it was predictable because I have these doubts in my mind for a while : my father's heritage - I'm a beneficiary and if she kills me, her and her children will be the beneficiaries. I remember when she was mean, I told her I'd change my will and she complained to my parents so I wouldn't do it. She could have said: "do as you wish, I have no interest in this" but she did not. She won't be able to kill me if I'm abroad and vigilant and there is the rest of the family to tell my Dad the right health advice. If she just manages to take the heritage, I don't care, I'm just glad, I'm not like her and will never be. If I have any new suspicion her or her husband could hurt Dad, I'll contact a friend to see if there's a way to put them under surveillance (or at least inform the police without putting anyone, including me, at a risk of retaliation) and I'll contact my friend who's a lawyer too to determine with the evidence I have, if it's enough to consider suing them. I trust the intelligence of those friends, and I know, if they think I'm insane, they'll tell me.

Hello, sorry to bother you, but youre one of the first ppl I thought of telling since I dont know who to talk to in my real life. Basically yesterday my friend told me she'd been diagnosed with high-functioning depression, and Im just... Idk what to do. Im so worried & want to help her. She asked me not to tell anyone so I can't even talk to my mum bc I feel like I'm invading her privacy but on the other hand I trust my mum with these things so... (hence the anon) Anyway do you have any advice?

You’re not bothering me at all. :) I’m so, so sorry that your friend is going through this, and that you’re in this difficult situation yourself. I totally understand feeling confused regarding whether to tell or not - I trust my own mom with things like this and would feel very uncertain if a friend confided in me but I needed support dealing with it.

The very best thing you can do for her right now is be there for her. If she’s not ready to talk about her depression, then don’t force it, but if you’re comfortable doing so, then make sure she knows that you’ll listen if she wants to talk about it. Everyone’s experience with depression is different, but having someone who is willing to just be there with you can be an enormous help. You don’t have to be a psychologist or a doctor to be a good friend. Sometimes just listening without saying anything or giving advice (just acknowledging what they say and how they feel about things, even if they seem irrational) can make for the best support.

It’s good that she has a diagnosis, and that she is functioning. I don’t know if she has a specific treatment plan, but either way, as her friend, you can support her in that. Little things can also make a big difference: getting enough sleep, sunlight, good food, water, and exercise. I don’t know your situation or what your relationship is like, but if you’re in a situation where you can make sure she gets out of the house and does fun things sometimes (or does fun things inside the house), that can also help a lot. Depression can sometimes be made worse by feeling isolated or lonely, and consequently, social interaction (with a close friend, lots of friends, etc. - depends on the individual) can sometimes help make depression a lot easier to deal with. Spend time with her. Do things you both enjoy. Like I said, it doesn’t have to be complicated to be impactful.

And finally, make sure to take care of yourself. If you’re upset by this or something that happens in the future, then please find someone to talk to - if you want someone who won’t know your name or your friend’s, The Samaritans is a free online resource you can email or (in some countries) call. They make sure your email address is kept private, you don’t need to include your name, and they’re just there to listen. And if at any time you believe your friend has or will hurt herself in any way, tell someone in your real life who you trust. Your friend’s immediate safety is the most important thing.

I have a question about car insurance. I was recently shopping around for quotes for car insurance. I had gotten an email about Washington Mutual Car Insurance, so I decided to get a quote. I was astounded when they quoted me with $2500 every 6 months or $5,000 a year. I was just completely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much. I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they said it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that. Progressive quoted me $600 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Geico $613 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Allstate was $1,200 every 6 months or $2,400 a year. And State Farm was $800 every 6 months, $1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies. I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING. Does age and credit score make that much of a difference? That is insane, no one in their right mind would pay the full value of their car every year in insurance fees. What do you think?""

Well money is tight right now and I'm shopping around for a new auto insurance. I live in CA and so far the cheapest one I've found is Mercury insurance. I was playing around with the different personal criteria having fun wondering if having a different profession or having a college degree would change the premium. I found one option significantly changed the price and that was if I selected a different location where I principally garaged my car. The premium changed by about $200 for a year of coverage. It was based on zip code and I put the one that I used while I was in college which is in northern CA but I m in southern CA. So I just wanted to know a little about the pay brackets with motorcycle. Im not talking specific numbers cause I know to just get a quota for that. What I heard is for things like scooters or bikes under 150cc there is a bracket. Then it goes up for anything between 150cc to less than 400cc. I had a brush with a car i n the parking lot and the bumper of the other car came off. its a new car and the bumper needs to be replaced. The guy is claming $700 for repairs. Just wondering if i shuld pay it from my pocket or shuld go thru insurance. Since 2006, I have gotten 3 speeding tickets on my record, and 1 citation for getting into a turning lane too early (3-pointer). I got a speeding ticket in march 2006, february 2007, and december 2008. I got the last turning lane citation just a few weeks ago. I am going to court for both recent citations (from December 08 and a few weeks ago) pretty soon. I will use a no lo contendre to reduce the points on one, and ask to do community service or take a class to reduce the points on the other. I am with Liberty Mutual right now under my parent's family plan and since 2006, NONE of my tickets have affected our insurance. I want to take precautions and see who can quote me for having a poor driving record as I mentioned above. This year just might be the year Liberty Mutual will review my record and then, BOOM...rates are sky high. I want to responsible about what I did and get on my own plan soon.
