I guess you could say my art skills are a talent, but again I practiced for my whole life so it’s not really a talent more than determination. I can also cook decently, dance/sing okay, but they’re not talents to me, just passions

how tall are you? 5 foot 11 and a half, so I just say 6 foot
favorite subject in school? Art, history, dance, drama and IT
dream job? Freelance artist or concept artists. Tho the latter is less likely nowadays cus yknow… everything is fucked from AI…

I’ve been teaching myself to crochet and here’s some of what I’ve managed to make so far
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little Trubbish! I finished her a little while ago, and just haven’t had the chance to post her. She’s my second ever amigurumi, and my first that had multiple pieces that needed to be made and sewn together. It was a bit tricky, but I’m really happy with how she turned out. Her name is Natrasha btw 🌸 (pattern by sunnyGstitches on Etsy)
My next project is still a wip, but I’m really happy with how it’s turning out, so I wanted to share anyways. It’s a Halloween Pichu ^^ (pattern is from Pokemon Crochet - Sabrina Somers)
Tumblr media
I’ve had some fairly significant family stuff happen recently, so my amazing friend gifted me the Pokémon crochet book to cheer me up. I wanted to try one of the patterns to distract myself, problem is I didn’t have the right coloured yarn/hook size. I decided to just make do with what I had and adapt the pattern, so I came up with a pumpkin themed Pichu. It’s almost Halloween, so I think it fits lol. Eventually she’ll have a Jack-o-lantern face on her belly, and I’m thinking of giving her little fangs.
Tumblr media
Here’s what the back is looking like. I’ve finished making all the pieces, and pinned them in place, I just have to sew her together, then make the eyes/details out of felt and she’ll be done. She’s a lot bigger than she should be because I used a 4mm hook when the pattern called for a 2.5mm hook, but I’m really happy with how its turning out so far 🎃
It’s been really fun to learn something new. My ultimate goal is to one day get good enough to make a Melli plush 💜

Hi I really like your writing and I would like a matchup (I never asked that kind of thing I am a bit nervous )
I am she / her and an introvert , people really tired me but I get tired less easily if I like them
I play a lot of video game , I watch vid and stream , read and i crochet many thing. I like baking too.i love my pets and just animals in general (i like to learn random stuff about them)
I get uneasy on loud ou crowded place. I have trouble with eye contact but I try my best. I basically get two personality : one with the people I know and an « outside one »which is just polite and « please don’t hate me ». With people I know I just talk a lot about my interest and random stuff, i make a lot of joke (sarcastic one too). I am caring and loyal to my friend and family. But when I get mad i can get really snappy or just full blow out.
I am 5,7 , chubby with short curly hair and glasses
Thank for your time reading me , your work and your time
Have a good day !
I match you with jack howl!!!
Tumblr media
he is one to be attracted to more of the quieter and shyer types of people, so he found himself around you a lot. sometimes to avoid embarrassment or shyness knowing how much he had grown to like you, he’d just mumble that you’re “less chaotic” than the rest that you commonly hang out with like ace or grim.
though he loves your more reserved self, he can’t help but worry what that nature of yours might lead to with people at nrc. he does have a habit of being a bit protective over you, especially in crowded areas like when they’re events going on and such.
loyalty is something he is as well and appreciates that trait in anyone. not to mention, he also values family above many things— it is very important to him and to his kind anyway. so he loves that about you, for sure.
Jack is still relatively nervous around you, as much as he wouldn’t like to admit it. but he does like o listen to you ramble around him, he wants to hear it all. something you baked recently (pls offer it to him haha), something you recently crocheted, animals— anything!

THANK YOU FOR THE TAG MEL @melverie !!!!! <333
15 Questions Tag Game
01 - Are you named after anyone?
My grandma!
02 - When was the last time you cried?
...this morning in the car SHDJFJ i cry a lot anyway but i was thinking too deeply about Jack's Song by Cavetown this time HAHA
03 - Do you have kids?
Please gaze upon my darling children
Tumblr media Tumblr media
04 - What sports do you play/have you played?
I started playing basketball when I was about 10, but I haven't played since I was about 17? Not for any particular reason, I just haven't found anywhere I can play at (haven't looked much either LOL) this is making me wanna look into it again though :,D
Briefly played softball for about a year in high school, it was fun! I also enjoy cycling but I dont do that a whole lot. Did a bit of boxing during the singular year I had a gym membership, and learnt that I hate arm exercises with a passion but I love getting to kick things :D I'm also a freak, a weirdo even, who likes running hahaha
This is making me sound fit but unfortunately I spend 90% of my free time drawing fictional men so I don't do a whole lot of sport... ever......
05 - Do you use sarcasm?
NOT REALLY but people seem to think so sometimes? I don't know why lol
06 - What is the first thing you notice about people?
I dont, Im really unobservant HAHAH
The exception would be if someone has a really striking or unique feature
07 - What's your eye color?
Dark brown
08 - Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings, I'm a baby i can't do scary movies :,))
09 - Any talents?
At last I can talk about my one true hidden talent, doing a Mort impression
Is it a good impression? I have no idea, but I can do it
10 - Where were you born?
Oman! The only country in the world that starts with the letter O!
11 - What are your hobbies?
Drawing, shockingly, is the main one, but I also enjoy animation and clay sculpting! I recently got into plush making, I really wanna learn how to sew properly so I can make Belphie's big human world outfit jacket for myself lol
I needle felt and crochet sometimes but those are really time consuming and take forever so Im never patient enough to pick them up for long lol
At this stage I would also consider my general zine shenanigans to be a hobby too, I can't get enough of these silly things
12 - Do you have any pets?
Okay I'm gonna talk about them fr now so meet Pepper and Chilli <3333
This is Pepper, shes my darling little angel who could do no wrong, she's graceful and beautiful and way too smart for her own good and I love her so much <333
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is Pepper's son, Chilli, whom you could never tell was her son if you weren't told cause he's nothing like her. He's very clumsy and not very smart but he's very cute and handsome so it makes up for it and I love him very much too <33
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not a single thought behind those eyes
13 - How tall are you?
Like 176 cm? Which I think is around 5'9 or so?
14 - Favourite subject in school?
If we ignore art LOL I enjoyed english quite a bit! I know apparently the big draw of math is that there's only ever 1 answer but I'm not a logic brained person so I don't like that very much. I'm a certified bullshitter, I like being able to say whatever I want as long as I can justify it
15 - Dream job?
To draw anime boys all day...
If I was to be realistic though I think a job where I can use art and be creative but in a way that doesn't take the fun out of regular art would be ideal? I don't know what that looks like though
Or something with animals
***
I shall tag @aspiringtrashpanda, @kawree and @featheredcrowbones no pressure ofc lol

Dearly Departed
A post-canon Brokeback Mountain oneshot Available to read on Ao3 here, or as an author-read podfic here.
~
January, 2005
Alma Monroe parked in front of the little whitewashed Pentecostal church, got out, wrapped her coat more snugly around her, and started going along each row of headstones. A few minutes later, another car pulled up and a woman somewhere in her late fifties or early sixties just like Alma got out and walked to a grave near a white marble obelisk. When Alma got to be one row of graves over from the obelisk the woman looked up at her. "Are you looking for someone?"
"Oh, yes, I am." Alma brushed a strand of hair out of her face. "My ex-husband died recently and I know his best friend is buried in this town, and I couldn't say why but I just felt like I needed to come let him know."
The other woman smiled and looked down. "That's awful good of you. I don't know this grave yard real well, I'm just 'round these parts with my son and his family for the holidays, but I've been here a few times, maybe I can help. What's his name?"
"Jack Twist."
The woman's mouth fell open. "No."
"What?" Alma was taken aback by the woman's reaction. "Did you know him?"
"He was my husband." Lureen touched the headstone in front of her. "He's right here. Half a him, at least. Cremated."
Alma put one gloved hand to her mouth. "Well what are the odds."
"I couldn't say." Lureen held out a hand and Alma shook it. "I'm Lureen."
"Alma."
"Am I right in thinking you were married to Ennis Delmar?"
"I was."
The two women laughed at the unlikeliness of their encounter. Lureen shook her head. "I never imagined I would ever meet you, certainly not here."
"I know." Alma looked down, hesitated, and put her hand next to Lureen's on Jack's tombstone. "I can hardly even believe I'm here. Don't know why but I felt I needed to tell him Ennis is, well, wherever they are."
Lureen nodded. "They were close."
"Real close."
"I stopped countin' how many times Jack drove up to Wyoming."
"Seemed like they were off camping or fishing or whatever every weekend."
"But it couldn't a been more than once a month or two!" Lureen laughed again, shook her head, pressed her lips together, and looked down. "They sure were close."
"Yeah."
Lureen was quiet a moment. "You ever think—" She stopped herself. "Nevermind."
Alma looked at her. "I ever think what?"
"It's nothing." After a long moment Lureen took a breath. "Just, you ever think they mighta been a little too-"
"Too close?" Alma laughed, sounding like a madwoman to her own ears. "Oh I know they were too close." Her hand on the tombstone curled into a crocheted fist. "I saw them."
Lureen's eyes went wide. "Saw them? Doin' what?"
"Kissin'. Kissin' like they were 'bout to tear each other's clothes off right there in the stairwell."
"Oh my God." Lureen put her hand on Alma's. "I had my suspicions but... Bless you for not killin' either of 'em. If I'd seen something like that I definitely mighta shot one if not both."
"Who would you have shot if you only shot one?"
"You know, I don't know. Probably Jack." Lureen affectionately brushed some snow from the tombstone. "I sure don't blame you for leaving 'im. You did leave him, didn't you?"
Alma nodded. "I got to a point I couldn't take anymore."
"I don't think a woman should have to stay in any relationship that isn't working."
"So you and Jack, that worked?"
"Yeah. For a while, at least. Then I just got real good pretending it did."
"Why didn't you leave?"
Lureen was quiet a moment. "Well, in part, because my daddy'd never liked Jack but I married 'im anyway, divorcing 'im woulda been like admitting I was wrong and I was always too stubborn for that. And of course there's also that I loved him, always did, I really didn't want him to go. Then, well, he died, and that changes things. When somebody dies they become almost sacred I guess. Took me a real long time to get past everything. I did remarry eventually, older fellow with just as much money as my daddy had, just like my daddy wanted. He died a few years ago but I knew when I said 'I do' I was fating myself to outlive two husbands."
"I remarried too. He's still around. Had a son with 'im, love 'em both."
"I'm sure you do" Lureen paused, "Did you love Ennis?"
Alma met Lureen's eyes. "Of course I did. Even while I hated him, I don't think I ever stopped loving him. In a way I still haven't."
"I understand."
"Hated Jack, too."
"I know. Somehow I never could hate Ennis, though. Hated every other guy I thought Jack mighta been seein' but couldn't quite hate Ennis." Lureen ignored Alma's startled expression at her mention of other guys. "Maybe because I never saw him, I don't know. The first and only time I ever had anything to do with him was not long after Jack died, he called to ask what had happened."
"He did?"
Lureen nodded. "He did. And I could hear in his voice over the phone how hurt he was. I recognized how he was feelin', it was how I was feelin'. I wanted to hate him, but I understood, and I knew he understood, and I just could not hate him."
Alma nodded and put her hand over Lureen's. "I don't hate either of 'em anymore. I've made my peace with how things were. It's all in the past anyway."
"Right. And, you know, I believe they never meant to hurt anybody."
"No, I don't think so either. But they were trapped."
"By us. Guess you did Ennis a favor in leavin' him."
Alma shook her head. "No, not by us, I don't think. In a way maybe but it musta been more than that."
"You're right, it wasn't us. It was something more."
"Trapped in their own heads more than anythin', I think."
"Maybe." Lureen sighed. "Seems to me they were just trying to do what was expected of 'em even though it wasn't really what they wanted outta life."
"They did the best they could; the best they knew how to do."
"They sure did." Lureen blinked a few times, determined not to cry. "At least now they can be, well, them, I guess. I think they've earned that. Jack sure as hell has waited long enough."
Alma walked around to the side of the tombstone Lureen was standing on. "When did he die?"
"1983. October."
"Yeah, you're right, that's long enough to wait for anything." Alma took a deep breath, knelt, and clasped her hands. Lureen hesitated then assumed the same position as Alma began to speak. "Jack, figured I ought to let you know, Ennis is wherever you are now, hope for both your sakes it's heaven but I'm sure you've wound up in the same place one way or another. Expect he'll be glad to see you. You had best take care a him, you owe me that much and more. Hope you can both be happy. And God, please look after both their sorry, lying, good for nothing asses. Amen."
"Amen." Lureen laughed, stood, and helped Alma up. "That was nice, though. What you said to Jack, and to God, sounds about right."
"Thank you, but I swear when I die I intend to find that man and smack him because I should have but never got the chance and the courage to at the same time."
"This may sound strange, but I hope I die before you because I want to see that."
Both women laughed. Lureen took one of Alma's hands in both her own. "What do you say we go have lunch together? I'm buying."
Alma hesitated them smiled. "Alright."

hey, do you read fic at all? i was wondering if you had any recs, i feel like i don't see you interact with fic a lot on here! i love your stories, so wondered what are your favorite authors too :]
Hello! The short answer to this is yes, but it comes with the caveat that I haven’t read much lately, primarily because I have no time but also because now that my characters are getting more and more fleshed out with every fic, reading other fanfic feels like my members are cheating on their OCs 😕 (I read this really good Namjoon fic where he met the reader at a party, and spent a whole week imagining Namjoon cheating on Kaya with that Y/N and it kind of killed me)
Having said that, I still do read fics when I can, definitely those that don’t interfere in my head with my OCs. I’m joining collabs and book clubs as much as I can so that I read more; but in the meantime I’d love to recommend some of my favourite fics and authors to you and any other readers:
(Please read the warnings on each fic before proceeding)
1. Poetry of the Stars by @jjiimin: This is the best fic I have read my entire life (barring one legendary series in the HP fandom - iykyk) and I honestly have nothing else to say about it. Riley has unfortunately deactivated her Tumblr account but I’m so glad I got to tell her how incredible her story was before she did so, so this is my number one. It’s 25K+ words iirc and was one of the first fics I read in the fandom and I just read it all in one go because I couldn’t stop.
(Also a favourite is Irresistible by the same author but I unfortunately don’t have a link to it)
2. @sahmfanficbts: There’s no fic mentioned here because I recommend Sam’s entire masterlist. She’s one of my all time favourite authors in the fandom and I have read and will read every single BTS fic she ever posts. Every fic is so immersive and every character is so deeply developed that they just stay with me and I find myself thinking about them at random times. Just beautiful, fantastic writing.
3. The Rich Man’s Crochet Club series by @kpopfanfictrash: Funny, quippy dialogue is my absolute favourite thing and this series has some of the best combination of humour and heart. Shanna’s works are pretty popular so you may have already checked this one out but I’m gonna recommend it anyway. (I remember coming on anon to gush about it because I was shy af, but I absolutely loved it, Shanna :))
4. Four Seven Eight by @jiminrings: This is the one I’ve read most recently and I’ve had it in my drafts since then so that I don’t forget to write a review because it deserves a great one. So here’s my apology to Hannah for taking so long to do it 🤓 but this is an amazing series, full of angst and hope and has my recommendation for sure.
5. For The Crown by @chimknj: I don’t read mxm fics, particularly mxm smut, but there was no way on earth I was going to pass on this one. Gina and I share an obsession with A Song of Ice and Fire (and I mean OBSESSION - we talk about it 24x7) and the premise of this fic was so compelling and so exciting to discuss that the only thing better than that was actually reading it. The way Gina has written this - I was transported to Westeros instantly. Everything is subtle and nuanced and I found myself connecting with every single character (also Kingsguard!Namjoon was not something I knew I needed). Idk if she’s planning on writing future parts but if she is… fuck, I’m so excited I can’t even talk about it.
6. A Silent Heart Still Beats by @akinnie75: This is another fic I have in my drafts because its review deserves my entire attention. It deals with some difficult topics but is so sad yet hopeful. The OC is such a beautiful character inside and out and this doesn’t usually happen to me with fics, but she actually changed my life and taught me how to rise above, be compassionate and forgive. I won’t give away anymore but this is just a gorgeous, gorgeous fic.
7. Just Practice by @lamourche: I can’t BELIEVE I’ve finally found this fic again!!! I read it once and then lost it (now I realise it’s because the author has seemingly removed their masterlist) but I’d commented on it from my main blog. It is one of my favourite fics of all time: it reads like a college indie movie or like a Sally Rooney novel. I was crying at the end but I couldn’t even put my finger on what it was which just meant that it was the entire vibe of the story rather than a specific scene. It breaks my heart that I’ll never get to read this again but the author has all my appreciation and gratitude for writing it.
These are some recs off the top of my head that have stayed with me and I’ll probably add to this if I think of more. A huge thank you to all these authors for their wonderful work - and thanks to you too, anon, for the question. It felt great to go back to old fics and give a shout out to such talented writers <3

*rolls up sleeves* buckle in peeps, this is gonna be long. as promised, pics of all the yarn at and related things to it! Also Ray, fellow void, if you want anything in particular, just holler at me. 👍First the wips!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From left to right: pillow cover in checkerboard stitch using bulky super wash merino wool (cause I wanted to try something new) blanket for stepdad in bamboo stitch with acrylic yarn blanket for mom in broken rib stitch ( I wanna have this done by mother's day but I dunno yet), also in acrylic, and place mat for a friend in basic garter stitch, again in acrylic.
Next is completed stuff!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From left to right: scarf in stockinette stitch for my sis, who likes it despite me being a picky bitch about how it got out of control and definitely not what I intended, argh. Also it's hard to see, but there's beads in there as well. 2nd pic is headband (need to seam the ends together actually), and 2 dishcloths (the holes are intentional on the blue one, since I knitted that diagonally). Then dishtowel in woven stitch, potholders in.. I think I did moss stitch on those. And a facecloth in sand stitch. Then dishtowel in 2x2 rib stitch. I don't remember what I did for the dishcloths, but I DO remember kicking myself cause if I'd thought of it earlier I could've put beads in the pink part to make them watermelon-themed! All of the kitchen-type items were made from cotton/cotton blends. I also have another stack of completed kitchen-type stuff for relatives and friends, but I don't have pics of them at the moment.
Last but not least, the yarn hoard! The stack of 5 cakes was the recent order that was on sale and will eventually become a blanket for my sis. The small tubs are super wash merino wool skeins, they will become various things once I figure out exactly what I wanna make. 🤷‍♀️ so many ideas and patterns, and I'm so indecisive, augh. The tub beneath it is acrylic/acrylic blends, then there's the cotton/cotton blends with a needle case full of spare needles. Last tub is regular wool that was a gift from my mom, a sick kit, and yarn that's was a gift from a nurse I work with (she crochets!) who received it from someone and didn't know what to do with it, asked if I wanted it, and said if i couldn't/didn't want to use it, I could always pass it along as well. And then there's the little roller shelf cart that I keep by my chair so I can organize things while I work on them, and a hat kit! Which I will attempt at some point once I finally get the hang of knitting in the round! Which is supposed to be easy but my fingers don't like to cooperate sometimes! 😒 there are some people who may say that all that yarn isn't necessary, that I may have a problem. To which I say lies and slander and I DON'T have a problem I can stop anytime I want, really. <.<; I was always an arts and crafts kid anyway, this is just...a bigger version of that and I get to make useful things! 😀
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Babe!!! Babe!!! you've got so many gorgeous projects going on and so much gorgeous yarn in stock!!
Seriously the color choices you're throwing down are superb!! Everything looks so fucking good!!
And the completed stuff!?! Seriously fantastic too. And I agree with the watermelon thing. They turned out great as is but they would have been beyond cute with the beads in !! Hey that's always something you can go for next time.
I love seeing your art like this because you're doing so good!!

Why hello there! Here's some questions from the fictionkin meme:
❔ - How did you figure out you kinned this character?
🤝 - What's your relationship with this kintype (ie spiritual, psychological, etc)?
👕 - What sort of clothing do you associate with this kin?
💥 - What skills or abilities did this kin have, if any, that you can't do now but wish you could? (ie superpowers, languages you don't speak, skills you don't currently have, etc)
🔮 - Have you ever predicted something about your source material before it happened based on kin feelings? (For example, having a kin memory that lines up with something that happens in your source before you ever knew about it)
👥 - Do you have any canonmates for this kin, and/or are you interested in finding canonmates?
thank you for sending this ask!!!!!!!!!!
❔ - i figured out i was starlo kin cause of. well its a really long story BUT the short of it is i finished playing undertale yellow and he was my favorite and my friends started joking about killing him in their runs to give me psychic damage and it made me feel personally attacked for some indescribable reason and i ended up ranting about it hours after they had stopped and then they were like "hey you might be fictionkin" and i was like "oh that would. make so much sense." and then that night as i was falling asleep i re-experienced a memory of the part of the pacifist route where ceroba flung me against the wall so hard that i passed out when i was trying to stop her from fighting clover. and that basically solidified it for me.
🤝 - uhhhh mostly just neurodivergent if im gonna be honest. so mental/psychological i think?? i dunno, im still very new to this stuff. i talk about it like it is a past life even though i dont believe in past lives, and im pretty sure its just because i am extremely neurodivergent that i kin starlo.
👕 - COWBOYS!!!!!!!! i get so much happiness from wearing the blue scarf i crocheted recently cause it reminds me of my blue bandana i wore! also overalls any generally any farm-like clothing. makes me so happy and like i am in the right body :D
💥 - magic, like every monster!!! it feels so incredibly weird to not have magic and not be able to summon a magic floating gun wherever i want or to just sit still and summon a small, harmless bullet to juggle around in my hands when i get bored.
🔮 - not really cause i didnt kin starlo until after i completed the pacifist route, and any other memory i got came after i finished that route, unfortunately. unless in canon i was in fact transmasc. if it gets confirmed that i was transmasc in canon then that would be one thing cause the game is so new that i wouldnt be surprised if anything new gets confirmed about me lol.
👥 - yes!!!!!!!!!!! i have several sourcemates and i have one canonmate!!! my beloved friend @yellowclovers who found out he was clover kin literally minutes after i found out i was starlo kin. and then turns out we end up having memories that line up with each other. cause he remembers having awoken after the ut pacifist route and when going out to search for one of their friends, they found out via martlet that i had died and that ceroba was also still dead. which lines up with my memories cause i come from flawed pacifist in which i died not long after wishing clover good riddance. we are still very good friends though and i forgive him for everything now that i played the game myself and understand the pressure they were put under. it wasnt really their fault, after all, as much as it sucked.
i would also love more canonmates,,,,, especially a canonmate ceroba. i know a fictionkin ceroba but she does have enough memories for me to confirm if shes a canonmate or simply a sourcemate. though i suppose it would be bad to wish to have a canonmate ceroba because she literally died in my canon so i mean.
ANYWAYS!!!!!!!! thank you for sending in an ask!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really appreciate it :D

more weaving nerdery
so i have like. fallen down a rabbit hole of this goddamned tablet weaving, which is both funny and like, not.
Sometimes a thing catches you, y’know? and you just want to hyperfocus on it and do nothing else. And that’s what’s happened here, which is fine. It’s that it’s complicated enough to be absorbing, but not so much that it’s actually difficult; my tiny, frazzled, distracted, memory-leaking burnt-out little pea brain can actually achieve reasonable results even under the cognitive load of (*gestures broadly*) current events and such. So I’ve now achieved two entire finished completed bands, and have finished them off in like. Reasonably competent ways. I’m going to sew down the beginning end of my first one a little better, because not only does the beginning of the weaving need a bit of reinforcement as one does, but I also fucked up the weft in the first quarter-inch, so if I can just sew that down to stabilize it the whole thing will be much more usable. Also I finished the second one off by braiding the long fringe and I don’t really like how it came out so. Anyway! Experiments.
What am I going to do with these two finished bands? I don’t know. I’m going to make a third one, something with a white weft, because I loaded the shuttle with white and started using it on the white/black/blue second band, and immediately realized that while the bands are warp-faced, the weft is visible in a few tiny spots and having a design with a black border and white weft looks awful. So I need something with a white or off-white border for my next trick, because I’m not unloading that shuttle. (Yeah I wove the whole band with an improvised shuttle made of a bit of a paperboard box folded in half and cut to shape and scotch-taped down, it was not graceful but it was effective.)
I want to try mixing threads. So far I have used only 8/4 carpet warp from Webs, which I own in four colors-- black, gray, blue, and cream-- but I bought some #10 crochet thread yesterday at Jo-Ann’s, and I own a very weird assortment of other threads/strings/yarns that I’d love to incorporate. And the book I’m using, borrowed from @unicornduke (A Simplified Guide To Historical Tablet Weaving), has descriptions of a number of extant examples, mostly recovered from graves, and many many of them are made with mixed fibers. (Very often, linen weft and wool warp, so you see the wool and the linen holds it in place but is largely invisible. I specifically want to try that.) One, notably, from the Hallstadt salt mines, is wool warp with horsehair as the weft, and I desperately want to try that, but am coming up blank on anyone I know IRL who has a horse!
I recently texted my older sister to ask if I could get some sawdust from her husband’s saw mill, and they obliged. Her daughter rides horses at a stable and I’m trying to guage how weird it would be to ask if she could collect me some hairs next time she’s grooming one. I need like.... a handful of long mane or tail hairs, just to make the experiment. They don’t need to get spun together, I can use them single-ply, it’s easy enough to weave in ends-- I’d need like. Probably eight to ten inches is the shortest that’d be useful, and I’d need, well, a dozen that length at least to make the experiment.
Anyway. A project for a later date, but something to keep in mind.
But the thing I came here to note down is the use of fishing swivels to manage twist buildup. Part of this is my horrible allergy to watching instructional videos, which I fucking *hate*, but as I’ve tried to research tablet weaving, I’m finding much of it is described so generally. And so as I was reading, the only information I’ve found is fishing swivels for sale, and the description ‘use fishing swivels to manage twist’, with no information besides that.
cut for some photos:
So, what I did, was I warped my inkle loom in the usual way, where you just tie the warp all the way around the warping pegs in a circle? But I tied an end of the warp to each side of a fishing swivel, and called that good. That seems to be how one would use a fishing swivel to manage twist, right?
If you are a person who is good at knowing how physical objects interact you might be snickering at me right now, however. For as I learned, no, that is not all you need to do.
Fishing swivels, like any mechanical thing with moving parts, are easily-fouled by tangling strings. I learned that if the ends of your string are long enough to tie, then they’re long enough to get stuck in the business bits of the swivels. ALSO, the little metal rings at the ends of the swivels are kind of... slippery? Hard to keep your overhand knot tight. You’re going to have an absolute beast of a time with your tension, as the swivels get unevenly fouled by the ends of the yarns, and also some of the knots slip. It was pure hell, and I had to take the band off very early and give up, because of this, when the whole point of the swivels had been to avoid what had happened with the previous band, where I did not reverse direction early enough and so the woven area of the band advanced past the free space left by the twist unwinding as I wove backward, and made it impossible for me to continue far before I ran out of yarn.
Tumblr media
[this is sort of in the middle of the process-- i have the red yarn needle through the one loop of all the swivels to hold them together so they don’t keep sliding around, and you can already see how the ends have wrapped around the whole business so much you can’t even see the swivels. This is where I was starting to suspect a problem. and no-- holding one end of the swivels in place with a yarn needle isn’t going to prevent them from working, the point is that there are two ends and each can independently swivel as much as you want in any direction, so I was trapping one end and leaving the other free, and it was actually useful in the beginning for keeping the tension manageable, so later when I stopped doing that it made things bad, but the yarn ends had, in my defense, already made things very bad by then, so.]
So. Here’s my theory on how to use the fishing swivels, which I have not seen explained anywhere.
Tie your warp to the swivel-- I used one swivel per tablet, so four cords per swivel, and of course you have to thread the card on before you can tie off the warp. I tied it as tight as I could. I would say to additionally tie a second knot at a slight distance from the swivel, so that your ending fringe is stable and your weaving’s not coming up against the securing-knot, which is a pain when you’re trying to undo it later. Tie it as tight as you humanly can. Then take the loose ends beyond your securing knot, trim them to be all the same length, wrap them tightly around the area between the securing knot and your second, weaving-starts-here knot, and then fasten them down securely with masking tape or something like that. You must seal them down so that they cannot get fuzzy and get into the swivels. I have seen no discussion of this and yet cannot see how this technique would work without something like this being implemented.
Repeat for all cards, and do this on both sides of the swivel. There can be no loose ends, or they’ll foul the swivel mechanism.
I’ll get photos next time I try it, but I’m going to do, for my third experiment, a pattern with balanced twist, where you alternate the directions the cards turn so that the twist doesn’t build up in the first place, simply because I haven’t tried that so far.
Probably someone showed all this in a Youtube video, but since I can’t fucking stand videos instead of instructions, it’s the same to me as if nobody had ever talked about this. Do feel free to research it, if it’s a thing you’re interested in, and also feel free to tell me if someone seems to have a better method, but understand that if you link me a video I’m very unlikely to watch it. I have the best of intentions but a whole lot of antipathy toward the video format, which is the worst of both worlds-- both slower than reading, and also my memory is such that I will not remember the crucial bit of the instructions after watching it, so I wind up both no smarter than I was and angry from having wasted a whole bunch of time.
Anyway. I digress. I’ve resisted the alternate-direction patterns because I know I 1) can’t count, and 2) can’t reliably tell clockwise from anticlockwise, so I am absolutely going to be wildly confused the entire time I’m weaving, so I suspect the alternating-direction patterns are Not For Me, but they are a very large subset of tablet weaving patterns so I need to at least try them.
Yeah, somehow I reversed the pattern in my fishing swivel experiment band, 3/4 of the way through the band, even though i would swear to you that I turned the cards away from myself the entire time without variation. Just, somehow in the middle of this, without having flipped the tablets or reversed directions, the pattern started going the other way. Which is not how that works, so clearly I reversed the direction, but I swear to you I turned the cards the same way every time, and I don’t understand how this happened. If I got that confused in a pattern that had no reversals, I’m just telling you now I’m going to be hopeless in a pattern that does have reversals. This is dyscalculia; I simply cannot see the difference in rotation directions, the way I can’t figure out which of my hands is the left one, so this is going to be a problem for me. But maybe it’ll work out anyway. I don’t know.
(For a while at work I often had to go through big orders of slide scans and rotate the sideways ones, and the command said “rotate clockwise” or “rotate counterclockwise” without illustrating the direction, and so I would constantly have to tip my head as I imagined the face of a clock, which I might remind you I can’t read so about 75% of the time I would guess wrong. I cannot overstate how thoroughly my brain does not work for this task.)
anyway wish me luck
here’s what that second band looks like for most of its length, though, by the way, which is pretty acceptable:

I admit... I just love these...
1. Are you named after anyone?
Storytime.
So I was supposed to be named after both my grandmothers. But one of my grandmothers was like “Don’t name her after me! She’ll sound like an old lady and she’ll hate it!” So my mom said “FINE! If she’s born on your birthday, we won’t name her after you.”
That would put me at two weeks late...
I’m named after the Allman Brothers Song “Sweet Melissa.”
2. When was the last time you cried? Earlier this week. I cry when I get frustrated so it’s a pretty regular thing unfortunately. Big feelings, good or bad, come straight out of my eyeballs.
3. Do you have kids? Nope. Not human ones anyway. Never had a desire to have kids, and I’ve always felt like that’s something you should do with your whole everything.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? More than I should.
5. What sports do you play/have played? I never did sports. I attended a basketball camp for about a day and a half before I decided that there was entirely too much yelling. My physical activity of choice was dance and marching band. And eventually hiking.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people? Usually their tone of voice.
7. What's your eye color? green
8. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings. of those two. As far as movies go, my preference is for things like spy flicks, heists, action movies, and sometimes a good spooky story (think Sixth Sense and not The Ring).
9. Any special talents? I’m a really good cook. Like not a chef or anything, but like... I can make soup out of anything. I can feed a crowd on a budget. And I’m pretty good at it. I’m also very good at being calm in an emergency. I think it’s actually an anxiety thing... I’m anxious all the time so I’m used to dealing with it and thinking through it.
10. Where were you born? Skipping, sorry.
11. What are your hobbies? Cooking, video games (usually things like Stardew Valley, Darkest Dungeon... more indie stuff than Triple A), crocheting, Magic the Gathering, gardening, and sometimes writing.
12. Do you have pets? I have two cats! Kaylee and Inara. They’re useless and adorable.
13. How tall are you? 5'9"
14. Favorite subject in school? It really depended on the teacher... But I guess it would be history or literature, but I had teachers that made it me hate it desperately. But if I was going to go back to college for a class of my choosing it would probably be philosop
15. Dream job? Honestly... I don’t know anymore. And I’m okay with that. I had a career in theatre for about ten years that I just recently left behind because the industry is acutely toxic locally. (it’s toxic everywhere... but the local scene has its own brand). Right now... honestly I’m enjoying being a homeowner. Like... that’s my job. I keep our house running. And... maybe I’ll get bored with that. And when I do I’ll find something else to do, but until then, I’ll enjoy my little garden and my kitchen and playing video games and doing laundry... honestly I enjoy laundry day more than I enjoyed my old job at the point I quit.  So... yeah. Dunno at this point. Cause I like my life.
I was tagged by @serenitynerd! Mwah, lovely! And I tag... whoever wants to do this. And @hawthorneox, who now must complete due to honor or some shit.

tuesday..tuesday again....again........
listening: so okay i did life drawing last night with my roommate on our TV using lineofaction and she put on a random drawing playlist on for music and there were some songs on there that made me go wait. wait is that evanescence?? wait i don't know that one??? and it turns out they fucking released new music in 2021?????? anyways it's full of bangers naturally, i went and listened to some of their older stuff too for a nostalgia kick
reading: i reread some of the beginning of the merlin cycle because apparently in some editions there is a description of the logrus in the prologue which i've never seen?? so i read that and started trumps of doom before reluctantly putting it aside for work. i'll probably reread the series over break this year it feels like it's been enough time
watching: i could have put this in listening but they have VISUAL SLIDES on YOUTUBE so i can put it in watching >:b
youtube
feat. the line "so I thought we'd look at a few recent [shitty vanity projects] that are close to home by america's closest analog to an absolute monarch, that's andrew cuomo" which made me lose it (at around 11:30 in the video recording if you want, the delivery is sooo good)
there's also a really funny bit in their news segment because this was right around the time that greene of shitty politician fame was talking about the jewish space lasers and one of the hosts is jewish and was riffing off of it
playing: n/a
making: more crochet!! officially over halfway done!!!
BONUS: what delights have I experienced?
walking around: ive done a lot of silly little walks because i've gotten re-invested in pokemon go, mainly because it's an excellent way to kill time in airports and also my office at school is situated between three pokestops and my apartment is in the range of one so it's very convenient here in a way that it isn't back in NY for me...walked around the morikami last week which was sooooo pretty and nice
fellowship: i did spend time with family, mostly oh god at what cost etc. but i did get to see my favorite cousin who i havent seen in ages because covid + he lives in oregon so that was great
deliciousness: my aunt and uncle's politics suck big fucking ass but goddamn can they cook a meal. thanksgiving food was a++ no complaints except that i was a fool and only took like three spears of asparagus before it was all gone
goofing: literally just hanging out with my mom...she thinks my sound effects are very funny so we've just been going a! i! o! oei! at each other
no transcendence, amelioration, coitus, or enthrallment this week

Get to Know Me Better
Thank you for the tag:  @ereborne! I always appreciate being tagged in these even if it takes me months to get around to filling them out!
Relationship status:  single
Favorite color(s):  Grayish purples and marshy greens and dusty pinks
Favorite food:  so many! But I’ll go with custards because so many of my favorite pastries and desserts are custard-based.
Song stuck in my head:  "Made You Look” by Meghan Trainor. Honorable mentions (because I get a lovely jukebox of snippets of all of them rolling through my brain simultaneously) include: “She Had Me at Heads Carolina” by Cole Swindell, “Thank God” by Kane & Katelyn Brown, “What My World Spins Around” by Jordan Davis, and “Heart Like a Truck” by Laine Wilson. It should be noted that I really resent Heart Like a Truck - I don’t care for it but damn it gets stuck in my head nonetheless.
Last thing you googled:  “Elves in lord of the rings” because I could not for the life of me remember Elrond’s name. I am ashamed.
Time:  11:14 p.m.
Dream trip: I really, really, really want to see Australia (mostly to visit the Australia Zoo) but also I desperately want to run away and spend more time in Ireland and see Scotland. Someday, maybe.
Last thing you read:  I just finished Hail Mary by Kandi Steiner. It’s a ridiculous college sports romance but it was exactly the fluffy break I needed after The Cruel Prince.
Last book you enjoyed reading: I don’t really read books I don’t enjoy to some extent. But the last book that I was gushing over and oh-so-happy about reading was The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling.
Last book you hated reading: Okay, so the last book I really hated reading was a paranormal romance I borrowed off of Kindle Unlimited and it just. . . it was truly let down by terrible editing and a very muddy concept. It was bad. So bad. And marketed so poorly. What was advertised was not in anyway what I read.
Favorite thing to cook/bake: I have been really into entremets lately - little layered domes with a baked element, a mousse, and a fruity center and some sort of glaze or shell. It’s been lots of fun. I also really enjoy baking breads.
Favorite craft to do in your free time: I have been very into crochet lately! I am making lots of little stuffed creatures and truly loving it and I have a very exciting project planned for after my birthday. I am going to be making a snake with rows colored based on the books I finish reading in the course of a year. Like a temperature blanket, except a reading log snake.
Most niche dislike: I hate bananas. Can’t stand ‘em. They are the worst fruit. Also, possibly even weirder, I hate the stupid bandage tape they use with cottonballs whenever you give blood. I am allergic to the medical adhesive used in most of those things. Basically, if it ain’t Band-Aid brand, I don’t want it.
Opinion on circuses:  I went to one when I was younger. It was. . . okay? It was kind of overwhelming for me, even though they didn’t use many of the classic “circus” animals due to welfare concerns (yay! a big win!). I like ren faires, and I like feats of human ingenuity and creativity, but circuses are just a little off for me. And I especially don’t love circuses that don’t understand the ethics/welfare needs for animals they use.
Do you have any sense of direction: sort of? Don’t ask me road names/numbers, but give me landmarks or drop me somewhere and tell me to walk myself back to the car and I should be good.
Tell us about your D&D character: I have not played in years, but I have recently been invited to join an all-bard oneshot in a couple weeks? I’m really tempted but also pretty intimidated because I haven’t played in years and this would be a remote campaign with some potentially weird player dynamics. (The DM is one of my best friends who also happens to be my ex and the other players would be all female -- his girlfriend, his gf’s friend, and one of his old friends I never met. Although I have met his gf and she’s incredibly awesome, so maybe it’s just me seizing an excuse because I don’t know how to RP anymore.) I have to give them my decision by Wednesday and I have a built-in out of work stress, so all opinions and/or advice welcome :P

Today, my high school hosted their annual art show.
This year was the first (and last) year that I had a piece featured in it.
It was also the first (and possibly last) time I'll go to it. (Though maybe I'll be back someday?)
Though I'd never been to one before, this year's exhibition felt special compared to the other years.
Maybe it was because a lot of my friends had full displays at this show.
=====================================
I walked in, showed my parents the one thing I'd painted, and quickly made my way to the main floor where all my friends were displaying their work.
First, I'd stopped at a table with a friend I knew from soccer at the beginning of the school year. He'd been injured for the first half of the season, so we'd spent a lot of time talking while on the sidelines. (It's worth noting I managed the team, so I didn't spend much time in drills either.) While we talked about his art projects occasionally, I had no idea what to expect tonight from his display at the art show.
What I didn't expect was Wes Anderson level stop-motion projects. At no point had I ever gotten the feeling that this friend was one who'd worked with stop-motion. A whole area was dedicated to watching various films he'd made. My favorite one was one he'd made about lemmings, which was a criticism of the work-intensive culture in America. (You know I love my societal parodies!)
But I think it goes to show that you'll never really know everything about a person. In fact, I'm still learning new stuff about my parents even after living with them for the past eighteen years.
Next' I'd visited a table with a newer friend, who, while we went to elementary school together, I can't say we talked much until more recently during art class. She was always working on some crochet stuff or something similar, so when I finally read their exhibit description, I was honestly shocked to find out that they focused on making their own dyes.
You know, like in Minecraft? When you take the flowers and--it's something I'd always been interested in doing, but never really had the time to do myself. It was exhilarating to see someone else who'd actually taken it up seriously. I can't explain why. After all, I wasn't even doing the thing--someone else was, and I still thought it was cool!
Maybe it's because it was someone I knew in person, who existed as a real tangible person as opposed to the online people I could've watched do the same techniques. That's just my guess.
Then I walked past the piano, which one of my friends was playing. They'd played piano at past art shows, usually with someone else to take turns with, but this time, they played the whole two hours alone. I commend Piano Friend for this--it's hard for me to even improvise for more than an hour before my hands hurt!
I also feel kind of bad for them--he never got a chance to look at most of the art, save for the displays near him. Nonetheless...
Near Piano Friend was quite possibly the most awesome artist at our school--who also happened to be another one of my friends! She was super busy talking to the many people who'd come to look at her work--as expected, since she's done so much art-related stuff for the school. Her first piece of the year was elected as the poster for the art show, and she was also commissioned to design the 2024 mural portrait thingy. (I don't remember exactly what it's called right now, but it's kind of a big deal to have the honor of designing it!)
Honestly, I didn't feel a strong need to talk to Awesome Friend since they seemed so busy with all the art show guests, and I get to talk to her every day at school anyway. Nonetheless, I still said hello when I had a chance to.
After that, I had a pleasant conversation with another artist who'd taken a more abstract approach to art. We discussed how "spontaneous art is often great", and how playing the guitar spontaneously often leads to better melodies than playing it mechanically.
Finally, I stopped at another newer elementary school friend's (like Dye Friend) display, which featured a painting of an image that was unmistakably a painting of a scene from our kindergarten play. Obviously, when I asked her about it, she confirmed my assumptions, and also added that the work made her feel a little sad.
I must admit it also made me sad, but in a good nostalgic sort of way. I feel that the painting was sort of a testament to how far we'd come since then. Just twelve short years ago we were on the stage retelling the children's story "Are You My Mother?", and now here we were getting ready to graduate from high school.
Of course, and all the things that happened between those two points.
=====================================
This year's art show was, again, special.
Though I've tried to appreciate and understand art when I go to museums and such, I can't say I've ever understood it as fully as I did tonight. When I know and have watched the stories behind the pieces my classmates've worked on, it really adds something to the experience of viewing all the finished works displayed together.
Honestly, I'm a bit miffed that I'll probably never know the art at an exhibition again as well as I did tonight.
But life goes on. And I'll have new once-in-a-lifetime experiences to mourn the singleton-ness of soon.

I don't disagree with anything you said but I just wanna point out that mbb saying she doesn't enjoy watching movie is just such an inoffensive thing considering how upset some people (not you or anon) got.
there are plenty of people who aren't passionate about their jobs. they might enjoy the work but it's not a huge part of who they are as people. that's generally people's attitude towards most professions, but when it comes to artistic or creative fields suddenly people expect it to be a core part of who you are as a person. also, you can be passionate towards one part of the creative process even if you aren't obsessed with the whole thing. maybe she just loves acting and performing but not necessarily the whole process of making films.
there are plenty of writers who love writing but dont read much or are literary buffs, or artists who paint but are not at all interested in art history or the prof art industry. or they do the job because it's fun and they enjoy it.
This is a very good and well thought out take, yes. I agree. Yeah I think that's why I brought up like other industry professionals saying that it's very common, to kinda not poke at her as much? Because it's not like it's just her or just kids these days. Hell that's why Hugh Grant came to mind.
No seriously like when I saw that discourse start the other day I thought she said like she hates movies or smth not just said what... most young people say? Like it does bother me but also like not something to get pressed over at all lmao.
Also very true that artistic professions are seen as an exception when it is a job like you said like anything. Hell there's an artist I recently saw who started crocheting because oil painting had become Her Job, so she needed a new creative outlet. I think it's normal. Like, I am passionate as hell about film and stuff. But it also isn't my job. SO as judgy as I wanna be like.......... I also don't really care she's like 19 and does it all day so she'd probably rather listen to music or be in the club or read a book lmao.
Anyways thanks for being kind and smart you made some great points

Meet the Artist!
I've always wanted to do one of these but every time I attempted I never liked how it came out. But I actually like how this one turned out!
So anyway,
My name is Lulu. I've been drawing since I was a child. When I was young, my mom couldn't afford a lot of toys for me so she would buy cheap art supplies at the dollar stores and I loved it and it stuck with me.
I love drawing so much. Creating is such a huge part of me that I also have many creative hobbies including photography, cooking, sewing, and I really would like to learn crochet.
I'm not a huge fan of most sports. I played softball for 11 years so I enjoy baseball and I also like F1 racing, but other than that I am not a sports fan. Avocados are too mushy but I like guac (which is mushed up avocados- listen, I don't know why either, okay?). Bugs creep me out and I hate cold weather. I would love to have 6 months of summer and then 6 months of fall. that would be my ideal year.
I own a small business called MoodyBear Art LLC. I sell my artwork as stickers and bookmarks currently on Etsy as well as offer personal commissions and open to freelance work. I love drawing cartoon styled art and I am heavily inspired by fantasy.
I drew myself here in my current favorite outfit. I recently got this adorable strawberry sweater and it's my fav and I wear it as much as possible.
Thanks for taking some time to get to know me!

My hallway crush has been interacting with me a lot more recently. It’s like she was upgraded from school npc to friend over the 23-24 upgrade! Shes very beautiful which is the only necessary criteria for a hallway crush after all. She waved and hugs me which is strange because before break it was like I didn’t exist to her. Her birthday is coming up so I’m gonna crochet something cute for her! That’s my go to present btw. The reason why she’s suddenly nice to me might be that I went on a date with a friend of hers.

This was the after exhibition coffee break, very nice although I would’ve rather had the carrot cake they were out of (I love carrot cake!)
I’ve decided I want to stop using my phone so much so I set up a one hour max screen time for tiktok and two hours for Instagram (because I have actual friends there)
I need to get an alarm clock so I can turn off my phone at night but I also need to get a million other things done and I’m already saving money for scout camp this summer so I need to put that in the bottom of my priorities list.

This model was wearing the same lipstick as me! It’s my favourite lipstick and it’s nyx called opinionated
This was my top song for the month of January

(Crossing out anything that feels too personal) ABBA is second because I listened to literally every ABBA album in January, they’re all good btw
