Everytime I think in Cartman, I still remember that Mandy (from "The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy"), Gaz (from "Invader Zim"), Suzy Johnson (from "Phineas And Ferb") Anti-Mabel and Bill Cipher (from "Gravity Falls"), are EVEN MORE FUCKED THAN CARTMAN and you DON'T FUCK WITH THEM! Although Cartman has likely seen worse if he meets Bill. Fun Fact: These characters come from cartoons for children.

True, really the difference between them and Cartman is really how much they delve into controversial topics. If Cartman was just a generic cartoon bully instead of a canonically anti-Semetic abusive asshole with neo-Nazi tendencies, he’d probably be in the same league as all of those characters.

Chapter 18 - The Impossible Victory: Vietnam (Suzy)

Chapter 18 “The Impossible Victory: Vietnam” mostly focuses on the view on the Vietnam War. It first starts with introducing Ho Chi Minh’s success in expelling the French out of Vietnam in 1954 and reaching Geneva Convention where the French would temporarily withdraw into southern Vietnam, declaring Vietnam’s independence.

Fearing communism would dominate over Vietnam, the United States quickly establish South Vietnam as an American sphere through Ngo Dinh Diem, a Catholic who had been living in New Jersey. Diem regime didn’t get much popularity from locals as Diem favored his own men rather than provincial chiefs. Diem was criticized for corruption, for lack of reform. Thanks to National Liberation Front’s nation-wide socio-political organizations, Diem regime quickly came to an end.

It was until August 1964 that President Johnson used the fake attack on the US destroyer as an excuse to launch a full-scale war on Vietnam. The book talks about the brutality of American soldiers on 60 to 70 thousand of Vietnamese people, including women, children, and old people that were burned or tortured to death.

Seeing scenes such as the My Lai massacre and how the US government was pushing its own citizens to wars where the victory was nowhere to be seen, Americans started the protest against interfering with Vietnam and the area of Indochina. The author described how different people from different races, age groups, social classes, occupations contributed to the protest. Pressure from its own people, as well as failure in the final attack on northern Vietnam with B-52 bombs, finally made the American troops withdraw from Vietnam in 1975.

The book was written through the perspective of Howard Zinn, a white American who was considered somewhat anti-America. Early on in his life, Zinn was exposed to Marxist ideas and served as an active member of the Communist Party USA and American Labor Party (ALP), an organization dominated by Communists. In his famous book A People’s History of the United States, he explicitly said that “China was … the closest thing, in the long history of that ancient country, to a people's government, independent of outside control” as the Communist Party gained control over China. He was even labeled “Communist Index” in FBI’s system (“Communist Index”: individuals who presented a high enough risk that they could be detained by the government in a national emergency.)

Given Zinn’s favor of Communism and the US government view of Communism as a threat, we might say that Zinn had developed some type of anti-American feeling. It is possible that Zinn might have shown some bias in his writing. He might have overestimated the pointlessness of the US government in the war and neglected other factors that contributed to Vietnam’s victory over the US, such as the tactics that the Vietnamese used.

It is almost impossible for any author to be completely unbiased toward a side, so Zinn’s case was understandable. Therefore, to be able to understand a subject/topic/event entirely, it is important that one looks at both side of the problem and understand how the author’s background might have shaped his opinion.

Torchwood: Children of Earth – Day Four (1 episode, s03e04, 2009)

Torchwood suffers a terrible loss.

Confronted by Clem, Jack recalls his actions in 1965. The 456 offered a cure for a deadly flu pandemic that was about to break out, but they wanted twelve children in exchange with the promise that those children would live forever. Jack was specifically chosen because they needed someone who couldn’t die and didn’t care.

The children were taken to the specific coordinates, during which Clem escaped. His escape went unnoticed because the 456 left before disappeared first. Jack didn’t notice his escape, and it’s uncertain why the 456 didn’t notice either. It’s possible that Clem was on the verge of puberty and was thus undesirable to the aliens.

Clem, haunted by Jack’s face in his nightmares, steals Gwen’s gun and shoots Jack. After Jack resurrects, Gwen talks Clem down. Ianto is upset that Jack never mentioned this before.

Meanwhile, Agent Johnson takes Alice and Steven to her facility. Alice warns Johnson not to anger Jack.

The Torchwood team tunes back into the summit with the 456. While Frobisher questions what will happen to the children they demanded, the aliens state that a “remnant” is watching. Clem assumes that the 456 is speaking of him, while everyone else believes that it is the camera linking the summit to the party in the Prime Minister’s office.

The 456 demand that Frobisher sends a camera into the tank. When he does, a 456 is captured in profile and three heartbeats and distinct forms of life are detected. One of them is a child, one of the chosen from 1965, who has not aged a day since. The child’s eyes widen in shock. Presumably, it has not seen another human in the decades since its abduction.

The cameraman leaves as the 456 spew more green goo and transmit a recording of Frobisher’s voice announcing that this is off the record. The 456 says they do not harm the children, that they feel no pain, but if humanity refuses their demands, the entire species will be destroyed.

The Americans are furious. They demand all the records of the 1965 encounter and threaten Prime Minister Green with United Nations sanctions for withholding the information.

Ianto feels betrayed by Jack’s secrecy about 1965. Jack leaves to call Frobisher. Confirming that the 456 have returned, Jack warns that their return is proof that they cannot be trusted. After the call, Frobisher is summoned to the Prime Minister’s office for an emergency planning meeting. Lois continues to record the proceedings as the PM decides to negotiate with the 456 as they explore options for viable children that no one would miss.

Frobisher returns to the isolation room and offers the 456 one child per million people on the planet, approximately 6,700 in total. The 456 refuse and the children around the world start chanting various numbers, each country with a different value.

The hard line is ten percent of the children of Earth. No negotiation.

Agent Johnson discovers that her unit has been cut off by the government, so she decides to go to London to get more information. As she travels, the assembled officials try to decide how best to select the “units” for delivery and how to sell it to the pubic. The meeting becomes contentious as they bounce from random lottery to alphabetical selection to simply filtering out the “drains on society”.

They finally decide that those who are less likely to contribute to society are the viable targets, including those living on benefits and those destined for prisons, based on school league tables and academic performance.

The proposal is accepted and given to Frobisher for execution.

The Torchwood team decides to use the recording as leverage to blackmail the Cabinet. Jack and Ianto head to Thames House while Gwen secures Lois’s cooperation. As Jack and Ianto hit gridlock in the city, Ianto calls his sister to warn her, fully aware that the line is being traced. He extends the warning to the government officials monitoring the call before telling his family that he loves them. He also calls Gwen, therefore providing Johnson with the location of the new Hub.

Frobisher outlines his plan to the Cabinet, offering a vaccine against the chanting as a cover story. When the vaccine goes wrong, they can pretend that they didn’t know and that the 456 were behind it all. When Jack is in position, Lois addresses the Cabinet on behalf of Torchwood, informing them of the recording. Jack and Ianto surrender themselves at the entrance of Thames House.

When Johnson arrives at the Torchwood warehouse, Gwen shows her the recording and informs them of the gravity of the situation. Rhys has a copy of the recordings and is ready to send them to the public if anything goes wrong.

Jack and Ianto are taken before the 456. The 456 refuse to yield and Jack declares that they are making it a war. The 456 responds by releasing a virus into the facility, prompting an immediate lockdown. Ianto demands that an anti-virus be deployed or he will destroy the tank. The 456 refuse, and the tank is bulletproof. The 456 starts to shriek, a scream that goes beyond the recording as Clem screams in agony and starts to bleed. The 456 declare that the Remnant will be disconnected and Clement dies in Gwen’s arms.

Jack promises to get Ianto out, but it’s too late. Ianto has already been exposed. Ianto collapses and Jack catches him.

Dekker has donned an environmental suit. Jack is immortal. Everyone else in Thames House dies.

Including Ianto.

Jack says that it’s all his fault, but Ianto says no. Ianto says that he loves Jack and asks him to never forget him. As Ianto slips away, the 456 tells Jack that humanity will deliver the children. Jack succumbs to the virus as he kisses Ianto goodbye.

The Cabinet is left with two choices: Deliver 35 million children or face annihilation. Brian Green chooses to deliver the children.

Gwen arrives some time later in a room filled with body bags. She finds Ianto and Jack, knowing that Jack will come back but Ianto has paid the price for their efforts. As Gwen mourns, she declares that there is nothing they can do.

Working with Torchwood is not conducive to a long life. We learned this on Gwen’s first adventure, and it was reinforced with Suzie Costello, Owen Harper, and Toshiko Sato. But this one was a deep cut for Jack, the team, and the fans. Jack lost the man he loved and the team has already seen so much death, but the fans reacted by building a shrine in Cardiff Bay. The memorial was a persistent feature for several years and eventually became a permanent attraction in the area.

This episode and its terrible toll also proved that the 456 were a significant threat. In fact, one to be taken seriously. One that could not be defeated by sheer strength alone. The team was outmatched and outmaneuvered, and they’re left with little hope at the end of the chapter.

That makes this part a very powerful one.

A minor note comes by way of the mention that the 456 are only in the market for pre-pubescent children. That explains why the Bannerman Road Gang does not crossover into this series.

Good Morning Gentle Reader…. Bella and I did our usual constitutional walk this morning, sea mist for company again, but no matter a couple of hours and it will be gone, evaporated up into the heavens.. I was asked yesterday is this only walk that Bella gets, the answer is no.. At 7.00am we set off on our 5/6 mile walk which is done as a "Power Walk" which takes us all the way around Estepona, we see the port, the old town and the sun rise as we come down the promenade, takes us about 45 to 50 minutes, then back to the house for breakfast and them through the day she and I will go out 3 or 4 times more until her collar comes off at night and she goes to sleep.. and that's a typical day in Bella's life... So that explained, let's have a look at the news and see if I can explain any of that...

ELECTRIC SHOCK COLLARS FOR DOGS AND CATS SET TO BE BANNED…. Electric shock collars for dogs and cats are set to be banned, Environment Secretary Michael Gove is expected to announce this week. Used as training devices, the remote controlled collars can trigger an electric pulse of varying strength, or spray noxious chemicals at the animal. Mr Gove, who has described Britain as a "nation of animal lovers", is imminently poised to reveal the move to prohibit their sale, the Mail on Sunday has reported. The newspaper said the Environment Secretary has branded the collars as "punitive devices" which "can cause harm and suffering, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to our pets". Use of the collars has been banned in Wales, and earlier this year Scotland began moves towards prohibiting dog owners using them. But it is only the UK Government which can ban their sale across the country. Ministers launched a public consultation on the issue in March. The devices cause dogs to yelp, squeal, crouch and exhibit physiological signs of distress, the Dogs Trust has previously said. And despite being sold to improve the way dogs behave, they can worsen the animal's behaviour, the charity stressed. Polling for the Dogs Trust earlier this year showed almost a third of people (31%) wrongly thought the collars, which can continuously shock a dog for 11 seconds, were already banned. The poll of 2,067 adults by Populus also found that 84% knew they caused pain and 83% of dog owners would not use them. Former foreign secretary Boris Johnson was among MPs who pledged their support to calls for a ban by the charity in February, and compared their use to caning a child.

APPLE SETS SEPTEMBER 12 DATE FOR NEXT BIG PRODUCT LAUNCH…. Apple is planning to reveal its latest products in under two weeks' time which is widely expected to include new iPhone handsets. The company sent media invites to a launch event taking place on September 12, hosted at the Steve Jobs Theater on its campus in Cupertino, California. As usual, Apple didn't detail exactly what it is planning to unveil, simply saying "Gather round". The firm's September events tend to be the launch pad for its latest iPhone models, but in previous years there have also been updated iPads and the Apple Watch. Last year, Apple released three new handsets, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and a new flagship device, the iPhone X. The most recent financial results from July show that iPhone sales have started to stagnate, only increasing by 1% on the previous year. However, revenue still managed to grow 20%, thanks to the price of the iPhone X. In August, Apple became the world's first publicly traded company to be valued at one trillion dollars.

CHELSEA MANNING COULD BE BARRED FROM ENTERING AUSTRALIA…. US Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning will not be allowed to enter Australia for a speaking tour scheduled to start on Sunday, her tour organiser has said. Think Inc said it had received a notice of intention from the government to deny Ms Manning entry. "Which after a little bit of research and speaking to our legal counsel, we understand is potentially an imminent refusal of her visa," Think Inc director Suzi Jamil told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. The group is calling on her supporters to lobby new Immigration Minister David Coleman to allow her into Australia. Ms Manning was an intelligence analyst for the US Army when she leaked military and diplomatic documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. She served seven years of a 35-year sentence before then-President Barack Obama granted her clemency in 2017. The transgender activist, who recently lost a long-shot bid for a US Senate seat in Maryland, is scheduled to speak at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday and has subsequent events in Australia and New Zealand. The Department of Home Affairs said while it does not comment on individual cases, all non-citizens entering Australia must meet character requirements set out in the Migration Act. The reasons a person might fail the character test include a criminal record or a determination they might be a risk to the community, according to the department. Labour foreign affairs spokeswoman Penny Wong said the government should be transparent about the reasons, if Ms Manning is denied entry. Amnesty International accused the government of trying to silence Ms Manning. "By refusing her entry, the Australian government would send a chilling message that freedom of speech is not valued by our government," the organisation's national director Claire Mallinson said in a statement. Lawyer Greg Barns, who has represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, said people with criminal records have been allowed into Australia in the past. He said no one would seriously suggest Ms Manning was a risk to the Australian community.

WEIGHT-LOSS DRUG COULD BE 'HOLY GRAIL' IN OBESITY FIGHT…. A weight-loss pill has been hailed as a potential "holy grail" in the fight against obesity after a major study showed it did not increase the risk of serious heart problems. Researchers say lorcaserin is the first weight-loss drug to be deemed safe for heart health with long-term use, which could see regulators approve it for prescription on the NHS. Taken twice a day, the drug is an appetite suppressant which works by stimulating brain chemicals to induce a feeling of fullness. A US study saw 12,000 people who were either obese or overweight given the pills or a placebo - with those who took the drug shedding an average of nine pounds in 40 months. Further analysis showed no big differences in tests for heart valve damage. Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said the drug is potentially the "holy grail" of weight-loss medicine. Professor Jason Halford, an obesity expert at the University of Liverpool, told the Daily Telegraph that the drug's availability in the UK depends on whether it is approved by NHS regulators. The Food and Drug Administration, the US medicines watchdog, approved lorcaserin's use in some adults in 2012. The drug has been on sale there since 2013, where it costs between 220 and 290 dollars (£155-£225) a month. The study into its long-term effects was led by Dr Erin Bohula, a cardiovascular medicine expert at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital. She said: "Patients and their doctors have been nervous about using drugs to treat obesity and for good reason. There's a history of these drugs having serious complications."

EU BACKS ENDING DAYLIGHT SAVING…. The EU Commission is proposing to end the practice of adjusting clocks by an hour in spring and autumn after a survey found most Europeans opposed it. Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said millions "believe that in future, summer time should be year-round, and that's what will happen". The Commission's proposal requires support from the 28 national governments and MEPs to become law. In the EU clocks switch between winter and summer under daylight saving time. A European Parliament resolution says it is "crucial to maintain a unified EU time regime". However, the Commission has not yet drafted details of the proposed change. In a consultation paper it said one option would be to let each member state decide whether to go for permanent summer or winter time. That would be "a sovereign decision of each member state", Commission spokesman Alexander Winterstein explained on Friday.He stressed that the proposal was "to no longer constrain member states into changing clocks twice per year".

Chanel’s Latest Collection Tells a Story of Past and Present

I very nearly forgot I had to write this. I blame it on the constant whisking away Chanel is famous for: whisked away from New York to Hamburg, Germany, birthplace of Karl Lagerfeld; whisked away to the Steinway factory where we watched pianos — the narrator of all great dramatic scenes — be made by hand; whisked away to the city’s famous Christmas markets; to the hotel; to the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s new acoustic concert hall and grand venue of Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show.

There, the conductor stood in the middle of the stage, lifted his arm to signal the crescendo of music, and as though he were the wizard in Fantasia and all of us had been brooms before that moment, we and the venue and the models came alive with the flick of his baton in an instant, whisked into the world of fantasy as Lagerfeld wants you to see it.

First, I’d like to eat my words: when it comes to the collection’s main accessory, those short-brimmed nautical hats have won. I like them. (I’m still anti-newsboy, but these are different. They’re elbseglers.)

The hats, the clothes and the theme were a salute to Lagerfeld’s childhood German port city and a tribute to the sea. Women, men and that very cute kid were dressed just a bit like sailors, with an era-dusting of 1960s. But for all the on-the-nose literal hints, like anchors on the front of the hats and sailor capes, there was nothing so kitschy you wouldn’t wear it. The whole collection was wonderful. (Chanel is not just Chanel because it’s Chanel, you know — there’s beauty, elegant design and hand-touched skill).

Personally, I would like to wear the slightly flared wide-leg trousers immediately. I would like all the Kira-Kira-sparkles. I want to shoot the puffy dinner jackets, the leather-trimmed A-shaped mini dress; I want to bury my face in the various fluffs of plumes, and I now believe everyone including children need to own a tuxedo.

Critically, it was interesting to read something Suzy Menkes wrote shortly after: “the designer has not devised a collection based on nostalgia.” I had written down (far less eloquently) the same thing. Lagerfeld may reference the past, but he’s not so precious about it. He respectfully acknowledges it and moves forward.

His devoted fans move forward with him. In the crowd of VIPs, women of a certain age, as they say, wore designs from his most recent season — the fun stuff, not just suited tweed. Also in the crowd were kids. There’s a very natural blending of tradition and youth in all that surrounds Chanel. I suppose that’s the ideal blend for any storied design house.

At the Steinway factory, after the tour had finished and a mini concert had been given, Tim Blanks, Business of Fashion’s Editor-at-Large and longtime fashion journalist, asked the pianist, post-bow, a question:

“Was that Radiohead I heard you play?”

“Radiohead-ish,” the pianist responded. He explained he sometimes weaves in bits of the rock band’s songs into classical piano pieces. The blending of old and new: I suppose it’s a universal technique that allows us to feel connected to the present, before it registers we’re living it.

Following the show, it was off to the afterparty, where a smoky fog masked a massive warehouse, all dark and romantic, everything made of wood. Men greeted us from the railings with German folksongs, and I imagined we were all bearded sailors preparing to crew a ship inside a dream, whisked away and up by the entire Chanel team.

As they say of the whisk — the baking tool that whips eggs into froth, and of conductor’s batons, and magic wands: it’s all in the wrist.
