He recalls Gaius's words about the visions he saw in the crystal cave, and how there are many futures, not just one. If there are many, then why can't he have this?

In which Merlin saves Arthur, but there's no quick fix after revealing the secret he's kept for ten years, and no destiny to guide him any more.

Summary: Merlin feels overburdened and under the weather, but he doesn't want to add stress to Arthur's efforts in revitalizing his kingdom after recovering the throne from Morgana, so he tries not to take it personally when Arthur gives him a hard time. But when reports tell of a dragon within Camelot's borders and Merlin gets dragged along on a mission against his nature, the king only seems to double down on his mistreatment of his servant, making protecting the royal clotpole a lot more difficult as he fights off an untreated fever.

Arthur doesn't exactly have the best history with manservants. And it seems like this one with Merlin is going to be shorter and worse than most. It is not just that he is forgetful, or disappears for days on end, but it seems like he had no grasp of common human behaviour. But despite everything, they manage to forge a friendship, and one night, long-kept secrets are revealed, pledges and sacrifices made, and a new era birthed.

Notes: This fic fundamentally changed me as a person, like, woah. I don't know what to say about this except, I love angst, from the bottom of my heart, but I've had the sequel on my tbr for over a year and I am, hands-down, terrified of it. It has a happy ending!! But christ, the angst. Her writing in general is an absolute gift which is not at all why I jumped at the first chance to bother her about it lmao, so like, recs for all of her stuff - 100/10 would recommend, just bring some tissues.

Summary:

Gwen has never fully managed to shake her love for the lady who had once sworn to keep her safe. Now locked in a tower by that same lady, she must face a truth she's long kept buried (even from herself). An exploration of grief, anger, and the inability to let go of someone you once loved (even when you should).

Notes: If you want some stellar morgwen angst, atlanta's fics are the way to go; she single-handedly dragged me into the pairing, and I've been stuck here ever since, much to her joy and regret, so !! Also morgwen aside, if you like your Gwen with some goddamn agency, she got you <3

Deluge by Suaine [Merthur | 50k | M | no warnings]

Summary:

In the aftermath of Merlin's battle against Nimueh, the rain seems a minor complication, perhaps even a cleansing influence. When the rain doesn't stop, Camelot is pushed to the brink once more. This time, Arthur may be in over his head. Contains: a lot of wet boys in emotional scenes, Arthur knowing more than he lets on, Merlin being an idiot, both of them being a bit stupidly heroic, telepathic chess, rain (lots of), war, making out against a tree, coincidental druids, co-opted history, co-opted myths, magic, coming of age (metaphorically), and more magically annoying yet surprisingly un-floody water than you can shake a stick at.

Notes: This is such an insanely good, insanely underrated fic! The vibe of it is just really specific in a way I can't really explain, the plot is super unique and intriguing, and the writing is an absolute gem. Also I'm just a sucker for a good characterization of Arthur and ohhh boy does this one deliver.

Summary:

Arthur and Merlin are friends, and each others go to for the in between times, but maybe they were together all along.

Notes: The only other modern au on this list, but SO deserved - I love tropes that get flipped a bit, so oblivious!Merlin is already a win in my book, but then there's just... I don't want to give away too much, but there is something so damn special about the resolution of this fic, it makes me want to cry every single time. Like. god. the love, it's all about the unconditional love, at the end of the day! mwah!!!

Fic: “All The King's Horses And All The King's Men”

Summary: On the eve of King Uther's long-awaited marriage ceremony, Nimueh convinces her lover to flee.

Even from this distance, Nimueh hears the ringing of the great bell.

They cordoned off the lower town not long after she stole one of Uther's thoroughbreds, pulling a weeping Ygraine on.

"I won't marry him… if my life means so little…" "I won't…"

Bruises colour Ygraine's wrists and arms.

Nimueh remembers a murmurous kiss and holding Ygraine reassuringly. Her yellow curls smelled of the dungeon's rotted straw. Her breath heavy.

In the dead of night, both women run.

Ygraine begs to speak with Uther, and Nimueh fiercely denies it. He desires Ygraine. Uther would go to unspeakable lengths for a son, an heir… even befriending a sorceress unafraid of dark magic and capable of creating life…

A life for a life… it is how the balance of their world is met.

Ygraine will not be safe with him.

"I won't…"

Nimueh chases out the sounds of hooves following them, reaching the edges of the Darkling Woods. Uther's men hope to entrap them. "Bael onbryne!" she yells, lighting up the trees, clearing a path for only her and her lover.

But… Nimueh's magic, wild with her emotions, overtakes.

Another of Camelot's knights, Uther's men, dies… unintentionally… riding into the haze. His armour turns to a molten steel liquid. With him inside.

He screams agonizingly.

Ygraine leaps from the horse, as more men surround them, their weapons out. Her eyes defiant. "By my honour, if you return us to the castle, I shall go without falter," Ygraine swears, and Nimueh mutters out her name, incredulous.

The enchanted fires slowly diminish.

"Come," Ygraine urges her, smiling courageously. "Uther will forgive."

A grieving Nimueh stares into her face. How can she not see…

"I won't…"

"On your life, my lady," Nimueh says bitterly, readying Uther's horse. "I will not."

She vanishes into the thicket, no longer pursued.

Years and years pass before Gaius seeks her out, on behalf the King and Queen of Camelot… and the Great Purge began... Nimueh wonders Ygraine's fate if she remained at the Isle of the Blessed, cruel-hearted to their pleas…

And if her people might have lived freely…

If another of those with magic had been blamed for Uther's ignorance…

Then…

No-one is safe.

Deep in her cave, Nimueh laughs, marking the Afanc's egg in her hands.

It's the end of the year, and here Peach is, sneaking in just under the wire with the November round up. Sorry it’s so late, and I will do my very best to do better next year...

As always happens at the end of these things, we got a truly mind-blowing number of fills in November - 99 of them, to be exact, created by 20 fantabulous participants! 79 were fics, 11 artworks, five reclists and one moodboard, one gifset, one playlist and one digital 3D model, which is another entirely new format for us (and, can I just say, I love and adore how willing you all are to try new things).

We also got the largest array of foreground ships we’ve seen since February, with 15 different ships (in addition to the 21 gen works you submitted). Merlin/Arthur are obviously top of the list with 50, Merlin/Lancelot a very respectable second with 10, Gwen/Morgana at four and both Arthur/Gwen and Merlin/Freya with two fills each, plus ten additional ships with only one fill each.

"Wait!" Arthur called out to the man running down the steps, "I don't even know your name!"

The handsome, mysterious man just shook his head rapidly, speeding up his descent. Arthur's heart ached, longed to know who he was beneath the mask.

"Will—Will I ever see you again?" His voice cut through the cold, windless air. The man seemed to hesitate.

"...Perhaps one day, my Prince!" He finally called back, with that voice that sent a thrill through the Prince.

And then he was gone...

The Pendragon Royal Family hosts a special ball once a year. A masquerade! Only those with an invitation may be let in, but there are people from all walks of life who find themselves with an invitation.

When one year, a guest appears, and manages to slip in without an invitation, and capture Prince Arthur's heart in a single night... The Prince makes it his mission to discover who his mystery suitor is, and make him his Husband.

Unfortunately, once moonlight filtered through the windows at all angles, signalling it was at its highest point... The man fled with frantic apologies and a single, stolen kiss.

Fortunately, Prince Arthur was not a man to give up so easily.

ANON I LOVE YOOOOU i was so sad i didnt get many asks for this one you’re a rock star <3 my answer is gonna be so long im so happy i love getting to talk about my shit

22: Have you used any symbolism in [insert fic]? What does it represent?

MULTIPLE!!! instances of symbolism in how arthur got his groove back thankyou. side note i fully believe this is a better fic than broken road ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ SPOILERS for the fic below this if u haven’t read it go read it if that’s a thing u wanna do

okay so the first & most obvious bit of symbolism is with fire, specifically arthur and uther’s fire, representing magic/the secret of arthur’s mother dying because he was born of magic. at the beginning of the fic when everybody gets cursed to have magic they both repress it and try to pretend it isn’t happening, which is the exact same thing they do with the secret of how arthur was born. IN theeee best episode 2.08 the sins of the father arthur confronts his father about it and uther doesnt say that arthur wasnt born of magic, he says that he would never have hurt his wife. and since arthur brings it up again in season 4 (“magic killed my mother”) i think what happens is an unspoken understanding on his part that yeah uther did it but he didn’t mean for it to wind up like that, and uther sort of made himself believe that arthur bought it, that he didn’t blame uther for it

which is obviously an ENTIRE crock of shit, and the fic deals specifically with how that secret eats at arthur, because then he doesn’t know if the single memory he has of her is even real, he doesn’t know, existentially, what it means for him if her life really had to be sacrificed to make sure he was born. and he goes through a lot internally about how this secret isolates him, much like merlin’s magic does, but also how he tries to bury it, and deny it, and he just CAN’T, anymore than he can bury the fire. the fire HAS to come out. the SECRET has to come out, because it’s fucking killing him, living with that kind of knowledge all alone is a terrible sort of burden (again, a rough parallel to merlin’s magic, as well). and so the first scene i imagined for this fic was in chapter 4, where he creates this huge firestorm that he can’t stop and can’t control and it will LITERALLY kill him if he can’t come to terms with it, and then like merlin helps him do that because merlin is the only one who isn’t afraid of magic

going further, the fight scene in chapter 6 which sorry not to heap praise on my own fic or anything but the fight scene which i FUCKING LOVE i love fight scenes so much!!! the one where arthur like, gets pushed to this breaking point by uther and accepts the magic and uses it to aid him and save his life in the duel, and in so doing he sort of comes to accept that his mother died the way she did, and he also comes to understand that the ygraine he saw in 2.08 was real, and he finds his peace with it, and from then on the fire obeys him

uther on the other hand never ever comes to terms with it, and he never will, he isn’t capable of it. this i alluded to directly in the text but there’s a section from when he first gets the magic where he’s pacing around his room snuffing out the candles that his magic keeps lighting up and he can’t. he can’t snuff magic out. he committed genocide and he tried and tried and tried but as soon as he stamps it out in one place it pops up in another. and the REASON he committed genocide was that he could not and never will be able to accept ygraine’s death. and so he remained at odds with the magic until the curse was broken

which leads into the final bit of symbolism, which is the sparrow in chapter 9 (one of my favorite chapters along with 4 and 6). this one’s a big spoiler so if you ignored the first warning definitely tear your eyes away now. basically when they go out to the lake to get excalibur, arthur begins to like, feel the magic in living things, the way the show has sort of alluded to it - because he was finally at a place where he could accept and perceive it. and he feels the presence of the sparrow sort of get curious and follow them away from the lake. that’s supposed to represent natural magic, good magic, like the druids and merlin, not the curse that was inflicted on camelot or the dark magic used to make arthur. and so arthur is like wait this is good actually! this has moved me to tears! but when the sparrow gets too close it dies - because arthur is dangerous to that kind of magic, because of who he is (uther’s son) and what he’s done (been complicit in his father’s genocide). so he doesn’t get to take total joy in that without being reminded that uther used him like a blunt little instrument sword, that he has to make amends because he’s not safe. that two sparrows appear at the end of the fic instead of one, that they’re hatchings, is a symbol of a new birth for magic, a multiplying of it, because arthur is changing the world to make that possible. they aren’t grown yet, so all it is is a POSSIBILITY because you can’t ever really finish atoning for the death of kids, but he’s made the start, and that’s where i chose to end the fic - with just a little more left to go, more left to imagine, even though this part of the story is over. i did however fully write up what happens after the end if anybody wants to see that though lol

ok. okay. Okay. OKAY. THOUGHT

Fic idea: Death Song of Uther Pendragon. BUT REVOLVING AROUND MERLIN.

Like the potential for this is amazing. ANGST. ROMANCE. MAGIC REVEAL. IDIOTS IN LOVE. WE HAVE IT ALL(Note: I had this thought in the shower where all great thoughts come from. dont judge)

Ok lets set the scene:

1. Lancelot is alive bc yes

2. Arthur let Gwen go to be with Lance bc he realizes it was mean of him to hold her back from someone she loved.

3. Arthur has feelings for Merlin. Like love. yike. scary.

4. Merlin over the years has a few pieces of parchment where he has written down all his “crimes”, or times he uses magic. He has another piece of parchment where he writes a letter to Arthur about why he didnt tell him and how sorry he was. Merlin did this cause he felt guilty and needed to find someway to cope.

OK ON TO THE THOUGHT:

So, beginning starts the same with the almost burning and getting the horn. check. done.

They go back, Arthur broods, hides the idea from Merlin.

they go off on their little adventure, he talks to Uther

NOW HERES WHERE THINGS GET SPICY

AND NOT IN THE SEXY WAY

Uther knows about Merlin’s magic bc he sees everything over Camelot right? He knew about the knights (and in canon he knew about Gwen) So this man has to know about Merlin’s magic considering this dumb little magic twink has ZERO self preservation instinct. and Uther. is. pissed.

So he says “you let common men become knights, there is magic in the heart of Camelot!” much angry. very dick. so Uther.

Arthur: shock and sad. Who could it be?

commence the looking back and shit show that Arthur is about to cause.

CAMPING SCENE! but Arthur doesn’t tell Merlin about the magic comment bc he doesn’t want Merlin to worry and if Merlin found out, he may become a target.

Back in Camelot everything is fine until it isnt. cause its Camelot. and nothing is ever fine there.

BUT. NOW.

the ghosting that Uther is doing is now solely directed at Merlin.

candelabra doesnt fall on the table. It fucking gets yeeted at Merlin. M nearly gets crushed under that thing and the knights all freak out.

cause we all know that the knights adopted Merlin at this point

M gets taken to Gaius and he concludes that M is bruised and lightly concussed. (i dont want my boy too hurt)

Next the axe. M helps some of the knights with their armor and as he is the last one, he cleans up a bit. suddenly axe yeets itself and M gets a scratch all down his arm

sad and in pain Merlin

Now, M thinks A did something sus

u can tell I played alot of Among Us lately

also how does one spell suspicicious?

he confronts him, A brushes him off. bc he love his daddy. But A looks kinda like longingly and concerned for M bc he knows that M gets hurt quite a bit, but never like this.

M leaves and cue the torches and fire sequence.

*insert pic of Edna with fire in her goggles* *Uther is Edna, but more evil*

Gwen is walking down the hall when she notices the smoke and call for help.

our OG6 come running and find M, unconscious, bleeding and suffocating.

A freaks the hell out.

M’s room: he is on the bed and everyone, including OG6 and Gwen are in there with Gaius and M.

Main Q: Why would Uther try to kill M when he appointed M in the first place!

Gaius realizes. Lance realizes. oh shit. He knows

Lance and Gaius tell them and there are some mixed reactions.

Leon, kinda suspected it from the beginning but he didn’t have enough evidence to back it up

Absolute shock to Gwaine, Elyan, Percival and Gwen

ARTHUR IS FUCKING DEVASTATED. He has been lied to and cue the betrayal and manpain.

Suddenly the attacks on M make more sense

ok i am borrowing this idea from the author of the amazing fic These Breaths We Breathe series where Uther finds out about M and buries him alive

Uther was threatening M and trying to kill him

Arthur is conflicted so Gaius gives him Merlin’s list of “crimes” and the letter. All of the others leave and Gwaine implies that he would fight A for M.

Cue emotional transformation and realization.

Arthur flashes back to Isolde and Tristan and realizes that letting Gwen go wasn’t that bad, but losing M? that would fucking kill him. He can imagine a future without Gwen. But M? Nah man. They are two sides of the same coin. two halves of a whole idiot. two braincells of the same dumbass brain. they love each other. A needs M. A loves M.

So he plans to confront his father

he gets the gang and they all set out to find Uther.

They all tell him how they are accepting of M and why and that A should tell M he loves him when this is over.

A is touched and is glad that M has this family who loves him so much

now fighting Uther

right before he blows the horn, Uther says “Merlin has Magic!” and A goes “Yeah, I know and I love him” and yeets him back to Narnia (or where ever these ghost people go)

M wakes up to everyone knowing, breaksdown crying and feels loved

jump ahead a week: A hasn’t told M how he feels. He is doing something else instead and it is a surprise.

Leon walks in during that week and asks what hes doing. Arthur freaks out, hides the thing and blurts out “I’m writing Poetry”

Leon has never heard such bs in his life. But he gives up and walks away.

2 weeks later, A tells M he loves him by repealing Magic ban. and they live happily ever after.

Modern Merlin AU — With Gays and Churches

Slight CW for religious homophobia, and ofc I know that the majority of Christians are loving and beautiful people 💕

The Cast:

Uther: A firmly anti-gay pastor who is well known and mostly respected by the congregation and the community.

Ygraine: Uther's ex wife who divorced him after she found about an affair he had once had with a woman who named Vivian.

Arthur: Their son, who lives entirely with Uther and attends a religious school nearby.

Leon: Arthur's friend who also attends that school, who's parents have been going to Uther's church for years and years.

Merlin: A boy who recently joined the school after moving with his uncle, who teaches there. Also a closeted gay.

Gaius: An old friend of Uther's, a teacher at the school, and the only other person who knows about the affair.

Morgana: Uther's child from his affair with Vivian. She moves in with Uther when she's 10, since her mother can't financially support them both anymore.

Gwen: A girl at the school, who Arthur dates briefly in order to "prove" that he is straight.

Elyan: Gwen's brother, who lived with more distant family for a few years and has recently returned.

All other "round table" knights: New kids (they arrive at different times) who's parents have recently converted to Christianity and enrolled them in the school. Gwaine's family actually came from another church but he doesn't talk about that much, since he's not actually religious himself. Also Gwaine picks fights with homophobic teachers.

Kilgharrah: Either an angel, a demon, God Himself, or the school principal, I can't decide. Whichever he is, he occasionally pops up to give both Merlin and Arthur utterly useless life advice, in whatever form that takes depending on who he is. If he's somehow celestial, it's probably through sarcastic comments in dreams. If he's the school principal, he's just... That teacher that decides that stopping you in the corridor to Impart Words Of Adult Wisdom is a great use of everyone's time.

The Plot:

Uther becomes pastor at a church, and marries Ygraine. She disagrees with many of his views, but doesn't speak up about them, wanting to be a "good wife". That is, until she discovers that he once had an affair with a woman named Vivian and gave her a child. Ygraine then quietly divorces him and leaves, too afraid of making a fuss to try to get custody of Arthur. Uther tells everyone, including Arthur, that it was her choice to leave and that she willingly parted from the ways of the Lord. No one knows about the affair except him, her, and Vivian (and Gaius).

Arthur grows up with only Uther, not having many close friends, only Leon, who he's known his whole life and who's parents are also very religious. When Arthur is around 10, Vivian turns up on their doorstep, insisting that she has fallen into financial trouble, and cannot look after her child anymore. Uther takes Morgana in, insisting it was an act of charity on his behalf, and that Vivian was only an old friend. Everyone believes he is being a good samaritan, but secretly he hopes that if he "redeems" his child to the church, he may find redemption for what he did. Arthur and Morgana are the same age, and Uther begs Morgana not to tell Arthur the truth (threatening her for if she does), so he doesn't know she's his sister. They get on, mostly, but Arthur's a bit of a prat in lecturing her about God sometimes because he thinks that's how you make friends.

Anyway, a few years later, when Arthur is around 14, Merlin joins his school (they're roughly the same age here, Merlin only a few months younger.) He was sent to his uncle by his mother, since he came out to her and she didn't accept him. She wanted him to go to church and a religious school to "fix" him. He now lives with Gaius, and goes back into the closet for the time he's at school. He quickly becomes friends with Gwaine, who doesn't have many friends and is constantly in trouble for arguing with bigoted teachers.

Because he's really academic, Uther asks Gaius if it would be possible for Merlin to come round and help tutor Arthur in order to catch Arthur up with his studies, so Merlin starts coming around every Tuesday and Thursday. They slowly become friends, despite Merlin being quite rude, and Arthur having the most frustrating "holier than thou" attitude because he's the priest's son. Merlin develops a crush on him, and quickly gives up on trying to deny his sexuality to himself, but he can't tell Arthur, or anyone else.

In time, Merlin stops being so afraid of his own sexuality, and sneaks off to a pride parade and attends an LGBT group a couple of times. Gaius suspects what he might be doing, but says nothing.

When Morgana turns 16, she tells them all that she thinks she might be a lesbian. She's scared, but hopes that Uther may be understanding. Instead, he kicks her out, despite Arthur's protests that it isn't fair. She goes to live with some friends in similar situations, and over the next few months, cuts off Uther completely, changes school, and starts regularly attending LGBTQ+ events and just generally living her best lesbian life.

This makes Uther incredibly angry, and he takes it out on Arthur a lot, who starts going to Gaius and Merlin's after school to avoid him. He texts Morgana a bit, but is afraid to keep close contact with her, and still sees homosexuality as a sin. However, this whole situation has made him actually think about his own sexuality, and he's now afraid that maybe HE himself isn't totally straight. To prove that he is to himself, he asks Gwen on a date, but he can't ever truly like her, and she knows that.

At the same time, Merlin is trying to get rid of his crush on Arthur because he doesn't want to ruin that friendship, so he starts going to pride groups weekly, to meet others. He meets Will, a trans guy, and they almost date for a while, but Merlin can't commit to it because of his own feelings. Morgana happens to meet him there, and at first that interaction is a little awkward, but instead of pressuring him, she just gives him a hug, and tells him it's okay, she's learnt that now. She'll always be here for him if he needs to feel safe away from Uther/Arthur, or the school as a whole. He tells her that he hopes Arthur could be different from his father, and she says she hopes so, but she doesn't believe he would be — he seems to hate her too now. But that's okay. She's got a new family now. She's happy.

And then, eventually, Arthur comes to accept his own feelings, and Gwen does hers. He talks to Merlin about how he isn't sure if he's straight, and eventually they date, and then kiss. Gwen has a Bisexual Awakening™, and she reconnects with Morgana (they were friends before Morgana left) and they date too. Hunith (who's been having a side plot of researching things and learning and becoming a better, more accepting person) comes to stay with Gaius for a while, and tells Merlin she loves him, and will always love him no matter who he's with, and she's sorry she never said that before now.

When Arthur turns 18, his mother reaches out to him. She was too afraid to risk upsetting Uther and the church before, but she wants to know if he's okay. He's angry at her for all the years she was silent, and all the things he didn't know, and for leaving him, but in time, she tells him the truth. Morgana also tells Arthur the truth, knowing now that he doesn't blindly believe his father, and this won't tear a rift between them. Uther's affair is then revealed to the whole congregation, most of whom are appalled, and his reputation is ruined. The church gets a new pastor.

Some of the kids realise that they don't need religion to be valid and happy, and others realise that they can have both religion and love, and God can love them no matter who they are with. Both are okay, and everyone accepts everyone. They all live their best, gayest, cutest, and happiest lives.

ramble about your favourite fic?

oh! that’s a wild ride i have so many. im reading like 2 long form fics atm, 1 is currently being updates and one is already finished. they are so well written and just wow!! but if i have to say my ultimate favourite fic at the moment then it would be The Serving Of Servants by CaffeinatedFlumadiddle on AO3 and its sequel which is just INCREDIBLY GOOD. like??? ahhhh!!! the writing is great, the description is amazing, the characterization is done so well and the OCs are awesome characters, and ITS A SLOW BURN. The plot is super interesting and its brilliant. so if i had to choose then that would be my current absolute favourite fic. (Okay so this is a really long post so... well this a warning i guess)

There’s a bunch of other ones that are great so i’ll talk about those as well. did i mention CaffeinatedFlumadiddle??? their fics are just SO GOOD. like??? Salt of the Forsaken?? that was hilarious!! Exceptionally Exceptional??? that was a brilliant fic and i love that they focused on hunith because we didnt really see her that much on the show and this fic just makes up for that perfectly. Hunting For Dignity?? Cheers and Spirits??? YES. OH i cant forget Fool Me Once which is actually a really cool concept to explore imo. basically Uther isn’t a huge asshole in this one?? i mean he still kinda is but like its just chaotic and the relationship between uther and merlin is kinda odd because he keeps trying to find out ways to kill him and merlin is just done because he cant die and is immortal. i guess they sort of bond over that and wanting to keep arthur safe and like its a strange relationship but im living for it.

Usually uther is awful in practically all the fics ive read but there are some which sort of like make him kinda good?? like?? i mean hes still an asshole just less of it. like in About Merlin... (by LadyAuroraPendragon on AO3) Uther is still an asshole and hes against magic but like??? he ships them??? ahahhaha and everyone does too. its such a great fic. we got a wingman uther in there. A WINGMAN UTHER. uthers all like “why are so bad at flirting/courting? just tell him that you love him already JEEZ” and the funniest thing is that he thinks they’re together because of that scene in the black knight episode where merlin says that they have a bond and then he assumes that they are together and LITERALLY nothing can convince him that they are not together and its great lmao.

Okay so ive been rambling for a veryyyy long time so I’ll just say two last things and finish off ahahha. On AO3 there’s another fic writer that I absolutely ADORE. their name is AeonTheDimensionalGirl and my goddd their fics are BEAUTFUL. LIKE??? THE WAY THEY USE THE WORD CARIAD?? OH MY GOD ITS JUST PERFECT. Their whumptober series is excellent and they use the word “cariad” which means love in welsh and its just SO amazing and heartfelt and ahhhhh. Some of my favourites include Watch you breathe in, watch you breathe out which is a fic based on the ep “servant of two masters” and how it would have switched, like instead of merlin being possessed or bewitched by the nathair, it was arthur who was trying to kill him and its just so good. super angsty but it has a happy ending that makes my heart melt.

The fic?? Off the record??? is just??? PERFECT? i absolutely love that it was from Leon’s pov that was a really interesting way of viewing it and i LOVED the hc that arthur sorta has some kind of magic (bc he was born out of magic) but it ONLY appears when merlin is fatally injured/dying and hsajdbjsbhudhbedb i thought it was great omg. Another fic written by them called Looking After You had such a good enemies to friends to lovers arc like *chefs kiss*. I also really enjoyed To Worship the Powerful (and destroy the weak), Uther’s Bane, and Et Tu, Merlin? because they were such good whumptober fics.

did i say two last things??? okay i lied, it was three. anyways, last but not least (because i gotta stop rambling or this post will extremely long) the fics Chains Of Secrets and I suppose that I look different (without the robes or crown) are some of favourites because in chains of secrets its what would have happened if uther said that merlin had magic (if he wasnt cut off or IF ARTHUR ACTUALLY HEARD WHAT HE SAID AND DEDUCED IT FROM THAT) anyways i think its a great magic reveal fic, set in one of my favourite episodes “the death song of uther pendragon” so i think its just neat.

hilariously, the fic I suppose that I look different (without the robes or crown) is also based on that episode. i have a fondness for it okay? Its basically where Arthur blows the horn of cathbdhah again but gets transported to another world where Ygraine never died and ITS JUST SO BEAUTIFUL. LIKE THE DESCRIPTIONS??? THE CHARACTERS?? its amazing and i reread it alot. anyways arthur goes into that world and he has to find a way back to his own. in the fic balinor lives, lancelot and gwen had a KID. oh and merlin was a ROYAL which was just awesome. all in all its a great fic :D

So that is the end, or i will literally go on forever. sorry this is such a long answer ahaha, i really tried to make it shorter but just gave up in the end. A Land of Myth // RP Verses & Summaries

The following are fic prompts/RP settings for Arthur Pendragon of BBC’s Merlin. Other RPers are free to use/try out any ideas, but please like/credit <3

Note: Adult themes (inc. sex, violence, incest, torture, drug abuse, etc) will be explored in some of these verses. I am trying to incorporate aspects of the Arthurian legends beyond the family-friendly BBC series ;)

v. Once & Future ( canon verse ) summary: child!Arthur, Prince Arthur, King Arthur. This verse covers all the many stages in Arthur Pendragon's life as depicted in the BBC Merlin series, although expanded to include some new headcanons.

v. Dragonheart King ( post-Camlann ‘Arthur lives’ ) summary: on the shores of the lake, Merlin summons Kilgharrah to beg the Great Dragon to save the life of his friend. Moved by the Dragonlord’s pleas, Kilgharrah agrees and uses magic ‘of an ancient glory’ to save Arthur’s life: lifting a scale and cleaving his own heart in two to repair Arthur’s heart which had taken the wound from Mordred’s sword. Arthur lives as the Dragonheart King, sworn to build a kingdom fit for all creatures of magic... and the greatest of these are the dragons.

- credit for this verse is basically all due to 1996′s ‘Dragonheart.’ Entirely inspired by this scene ( x ) from that film.

v. Takes One to Know One ( closed verse with @lespendragons ) summary: The Druids foretold of a time when royal blood would bind a divided kingdom together again. Arthur and Morgana Pendragon are unknowing siblings with a hell of destiny awaiting them.

v. The Last Dragonlord & his (Pen)dragon ( dragon!Arthur verse ) summary: Arthur is cursed by Kilgharrah to transform into a dragon until the sins of his father are atoned for. As the transformation grows deadly he requires Merlin's help to deal with the worst of his dragon impulses. Plot details here ( x )

v. Duality of Fate ( identical twins verse ) summary: The two princes of Camelot are a pair. Unmistakable. Indistinguishable. No one is really sure who is who and this is something Prince Arthur and Prince Artorius will always use to their advantage. This verse covers their adventures from when they were little boys right up to the bitter bloody finale at Camlann. Plot ideas here ( x ).

v. The People’s Princess ( fem!Arthur verse ) Ygraine died giving birth to a girl instead of a boy. Uther never forgave Artemis for being a female. The Princess of Camelot grew up shunned and full of misguided self-loathing, until Merlin arrived and showed her the true value of herself. (Note: Merlin can be either male or female in this verse).

v. Rex Tremendae Majestatis ( dark!Arthur verse ) summary: Arthur is crowned king and rules Camelot according to the dictates of his father. His reign of terror brings dread into the lives of those with magic, but hope for his subjects who follow the new Christian faith. For there are many people who now regard the Old Religion as satanic. Note: This is the medieval nasty version of Christianity depicted. Not the real spiritual faith.

Winter is Coming ( Merlin/GOT crossover verse ) summary: The Night King has declared war against Camelot, advancing his army of the undead in his quest to claim the soul of a powerful immortal : Merlin. But King Arthur will not permit his Court Sorcerer to be sacrificed to the forces of evil. Against such a powerful enemy, even Merlin's magic has its limits. Only blades tempered in dragon fire can kill the Night King and his White Walkers. And Arthur wields the greatest of such swords: Excalibur.

Hoist the Colours ( Merlin/POTC crossover verse: closed with @miladys-servant-gwen & @thewritcrinme & @sorceress-queen) summary: Guinevere, Goddess of the Sea, was bound into the body of a human female by Uther and Kilgharrah before Arthur was born - out of fear and jealousy of her power. The Pirate Kings rightly fear the Goddess, but it will be the actions of a pirate prince, a rogue stowaway boy and a fierce pirate captain that will right the wrongs of the past.

The Knights of Albion ( main modern verse: closed with @thelegendofemrys & @sorceress-queen & @nobilitydefined ) summary: Arthur and his knights are reincarnated in the present day as rock stars on the road to stardom and fame. Arthur is the lead guitarist and singer/songwriter. Gwaine is his drummer. Percival plays bass. Elyan mixes things up on the decks and Leon is on keyboard. Morgana is the band's publicist & manager. Merlin enters the scene during the group’s opening gig at Glastonbury music festival. Plot details here ( x )

v. The Taste of Immortality ( alternative main modern verse ) summary: After the battle of Camlann, a mortally wounded Arthur is found by Morgana before Merlin can reach him. Taken to her hovel, the High Priestess performs magic invoking the darkest of devils to bring her Champion back to her. What Lilith provides for Morgana, is a vampire stripped of his moral code, allowing them both to be bound together for eternity. Warning: Incest features heavily in this verse. There’s lots of blood and darkness. Minors get out.

Royal Legacies & Great Expectations ( another modern verse ) Arthur is reincarnated as the son of Uther Pendragon, CEO of the word-renown computer software company CameSoft (pronounced Cam - e - Soft. The company is the equivalent of Camelot). Worn down by the expectations of his father and the demands of the press for him to find a celebrity girlfriend, Arthur is growing increasingly lonely and agitated in Pendragon Manor. Until Merlin finds him.

Once in a Lifetime ( another modern verse ) Arthur is reincarnated as a cheeky, cheerful young actor, struggling to make ends meet in London (but remaining optimistic that it can’t be far off until his big break comes). Merlin (who has also reincarnated and is without his memories of their past lives) is another young, up & coming actor. Merlin has tracked Arthur down via a YouTube video and wants to work with him. The pair meet together on the set of a new supernatural BBC drama series where they are to guest star as recurring characters. Note: This is not Brolin but maybe takes most influence from it.

5. And finally, if you talk to me at all, you know I'm working on this epic Merlin story. Featuring a very spy-like Merlin who actually uses his magic a bit more and really develops as a mage even before Arthur ever learns of his magic. This whole ridiculous thing stemmed from the idea of Merlin living with the librarian instead. Lancelot's lack of nobility was never discovered as a result. So enjoy some canon au with a healthy dose of classic Arthurian mythology mixed in as these idiots try to build a kingdom together.

Clearly AUgust was a theme that spoke to you all, because of the 64 fills last month almost a third claimed the bonus badge!
