Small-town Stephen King books are my favourite, and for obvious reasons they are similar to Stranger Things (literally a direct inspiration in the case of The Body/Stand By Me, and IT). I’m reading ‘Salem’s Lot currently and there’s just a quote that stuck out to me:
“There’s little good in sedentary small towns. Mostly indifference spiced with an occasional vapid evil - or worse, a conscious one.”
This is the main principle of IT too; It represents the hatred and bigotry within small towns in that era, and how that cruelty begins to taint the innocence and freedom of childhood as you grow older. Like Hawkins, it’s not a coincidence that Derry or the Lot are being tormented with “evil.” The evil is just a physical manifestation of everything wrong with the fabric of those towns and the so-called “norm.” This is why we’re going to see characters like Will, who continue to love despite everything thrown their way, get a happy ending. The supernatural threats are entwined with these themes, hence why it’s not just about beating Vecna (who is a product of being Other’d, and the environment Hawkins has fostered) and the mind Flayer or whatever. The inherent issues with Hawkins which allowed these things to happen in the first place need to be changed. Humans and their capacity for cruelty are the true conscious evils.

If the "cringfest as its finest"is directed to Ric*onne it'd be kinda funny considering how it's the first time in the franchise we've seen a romantic relationship in crisis being resolved by actually exploring the emotional depth of the characters and it was done in a healthy and mature way. That's what I dislike the most about twd fandom, complaining about wanting new things but clinging to twd old way of letting feelings be abstract and characters not voicing what they feel. That's what I'd want to see for Caryl, actual words between them, we shouldn't have to guess what this or that means.
Your quote is from an ask I received, so obviously, I can't speak for the other anon's intentions, but I wasn't talking about Richonne. It's a different show, made by different people where the power structure looks different and I'm happy for everyone who enjoyed TOWL.
It's no secret that I cannot with Gimple. Most of the writers he hired for the room were ex TWDU showrunners whose shows failed. They got promoted to those positions through cronyism and the case of Danai's writing being the best received episode attests to that the entire franchise is in need of a fresh perspective. One that isn't white middle-aged, middle-class male as it only speaks to one experience.
The @9lives2mics hosts spoke about "Ghosts" in episode 31 of the podcast [ Spotify | Youtube ] and like them, I'd love to see the Daryl and Carol spinoff take a turn towards gothic storytelling in S3. I'd love for their emotional arc to deal explicitly with their fears and desires.
Caryl need to learn how to believe they’re good enough for each other and open up to each other about trauma they’ve been sitting on for too long. That’s their “crisis.”
I like subtext but not as a means of obfuscating that you can't commit to your own plot. That's just bad writing.

How do you feel about the project you're working on right now? Work and/or personal
Feeling fairly good! On the personal front it’s… well, it is what it is, under the circumstances.
But professionally, things are going great!
Right now I have multiple balls in the air and 3 projects in particular are in motion. So I’m feeling blessed. Very excited and hopeful for 2024.
For one project, my cool lil action flick, we’ve made a switch to new producers who want to be in production ASAP. That deal is being hammered out as we speak. And I am EXCITED.
Secondly, a fictional podcast episode I wrote over the strike is being made by a cool company and that deal is being worked out as we speak. I’m very tickled for people to hear/enjoy this one.
Lastly (for now), a pilot I’ve co-created with a producer friend has been in an exhausting rewrite phase which has kept me crazy busy lately but we’re finally ‘there’ and it should be rolling onward soon to see if we can get it sold/made.
But also…
My team is tickled pink about a new high concept movie spec I wrote recently and they are looking forward to passing it around to some top actresses and working on it further in early 2024.
And I’m up for a couple really fun assignment gigs. TBD if those come through. 🤞
And there’s even more ahead beyond all that.
So, yeah, there’s a lot on my plate right now plus loads on the horizon, but it’s all only good and hopeful things, so — only up from here!
In my personal life… the grief comes in waves. But it feels a little less suffocating day by day. Unfortunately, another family member is still having major health issues/scares. Etc. But I’m trying to let myself find moments of relief and joy with the amazing things happening right now as a screenwriter/producer, and therapy has been going well and been tremendously helpful during these difficult times, so. I’m grateful. 🙏

"Primo," which premieres Friday on Amazon’s free streaming service, Freevee, formerly IMDb TV, is based on the life of journalist and author Shea Serrano, 41. He's the author of bestselling pop culture and sports books, including “The Rap Year Book” and “Basketball (and Other Things)” — former President Barack Obama chose the latter as one of his favorite reads in 2017. Both books were turned into docuseries for AMC and Hulu.
"Primo" follows Rafa, a young Mexican American high school student as he balances cultural norms, college aspirations, societal expectations and the hectic home life of being raised by his single mom and his five uncles, all with very different lives and perspectives on manhood.
Serrano, the first Mexican American to be a four-time New York Times bestselling writer, is one of "Primo's" showrunners and creators.
“I hope people, when they watch it, they just feel good and warm and demand 30 more seasons of it," said Serrano, who's also a screenwriter, podcaster and former teacher. “When we were writing the show, like, let’s just make it as specific as possible. And then let’s get a bunch of really talented people, make some room for them and let them go nuts."
In a virtual interview, Serrano said that while the show is based on a Latino character, it's not about having “to say that the family is Latino.”
“We were very aware of what we were wanting to do, and a lot of this stuff is, like, we don’t need to say every single thing; we just will exist, and it’ll be better that way," he said.
Serrano recently signed a television deal with Amazon Studios, the studio behind "Primo," to develop an original and limited podcast series.
He is also behind Netflix’s comedy series "Neon," as well as "Miguel Wants to Fight," his first feature film, which will premiere on Hulu this year.

They say you write a script three times: on the page, in the studio, and in the edit.
And in Audio Drama - it feels like this is ESPECIALLY true.
Some episodes were easier than others to plot and write, some had some great input from the writer/comedians in our cast, and some were just TOUGH (Ep 5 hooooo boy).
As much as we tried to do most of the work before getting to the studio (so much outlining and 5+ drafts), of course some things did change - though thankfully we not that much in the end!
(SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 6!!)
Tumblr media
The final scene between Sim & Aurelia went through A MILLION changes and drafts in the script, the studio, and definitely the edit too.
It was a tricky scene as it needed to sum up their emotional arc over the season, but also not resolve too much so that if we move on to later seasons they have somewhere to go.
I still wish we had a lot more time to keep working on the scene (particularly with the actors), but in the end - the simpler we made it the better it seemed to work! As is often the case. In the edit we simplified it even further, and gave it a slower pace to let things sit and hang a bit more.
See below for the production draft and the changes Lauren and I made right before recording:

Other ADs - what’s the biggest change you’ve made during a recording session? 👀

Podcasting Through Life
Last week, I had the pleasure of being a part of a panel of Stunt List Feature writers on Hollywood Wolfpack with Kaia Alexander. This fun hour and twenty minutes of is available now.
It was a blast to chat with other writers, laugh a lot, and talk about my women-led comedy feature MARGARITA MOMS SAVE THE WORLD.
You might be thinking, but Rachel, you're just a fangirl, right?
Yes, I am a fangirl. I also grew up on film sets. I still love performing and miss the rush of the stage and the comfort of set lights. And I write! And I'm a mom. And I'm a digital marketer. And I'm so many other things.
Don't let anyone ever limit you with the word "just". You're a million and one different things, and that is beautiful.
Me? I'm still on so many paths of self-discovery. And feeling the love for my first f*ck it script has been a true joy!
