I was reading some of your old young justice fics on AO3 (all amazing as always omggg I want to eat your writing) and was wondering if you still ship Kon with Kaldur?

Yes, and I will NEVER get over the fact that a) the fandom was not even an IOTA as interested in Kaldur/Conner as it would've been if Kaldur had been Garth or Roy or literally any gd white dude, and b) that the SHOW did not commit to making Kaldur and Conner codependent ride-or-die besties unto the fucking apocalypse, given how their relationship first started. Kaldur should ABSOLUTELY have been more important to Conner than he was treated as being and vice fucking versa, as far as I'm concerned. Of course Conner would imprint on his first-met independent person! Of course Kaldur would feel responsible for his newborn new friend!! Of course they'd both get weird about each other!!!! OF COURSE THEY'D BOTH HAVE DADDY ISSUES!!!!!!!!

The het ships that no one even cared about were more popular in fandom than Kaldur/Conner ever was from what I saw, despite the fact that Kaldur is the first person Conner both actually sees AND physically touches--via being mind-controlled into PUNCHING HIM ACROSS A CREEPY BASEMENT LAB, and isn't that fucked UP?!--and also the one who specifically got through to him of the initial trio who met him in Cadmus, AND is a very chill and patient and serious-minded, calming presence who will actually fucking meet you where you're at, and also DESERVES someone who is a real ride-or-die full-loyalty-nonstop type to get angry on his behalf. Those two's personalities would be SO much more interesting together than "teehee bubbly alien LARPs being human to avoid her problems and drags Conner along for the ride even when he fucking SAYS he hates it!!", ffs.

( like, I like M'gann, but LORD did they handle her and Conner's . . . EVERYTHING so, so poorly, and it only ever got WORSE, from what I've heard. )

And really Kaldur just deserved so much more screentime and emotional development and like, ANY attention from fandom, imho. I wanted to write way more for them than I did, but the total lack of other fans of the ship around just sucked out all the fun and inspo.

I haven’t been keeping up with current dc comics, what’s happened with Kon? I keep seeing people talk about it but it’s all vague

Basically, Kon had a really fun and overall good mini called Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow which ended this week. This book ended with Kon in a good place and having really seemed to find his place in the world again after the rough last several years (since getting reintroduced in YJ 2019 into a world that didn't remember him) he's had. That book ended technically last week via digital release, but this week in terms of the physical release.

But then... also this week... we found out via a Bleeding Cool article on Sunday that there was going to be a backup story featuring Kon in Action Comics this week which... suddenly made Kon/M'gann—a ship that originated in the Young Justice cartoon which has literally nothing to do with main continuity comics, a ship between two characters who have barely if ever spoken a fucking word to one another in actual main continuity—be dating. With absolutely no build up.

Queue people being concerned/stressed/angry/etc etc. And now today the issue dropped. And well it's just as bad as it seemed like it was going to be.

It basically just... manages to mention Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow while also regressing Kon back as if the development he had in that book hadn't happened at all, have Kon be ridiculously rude to Ma Kent out of nowhere in a way he never has been before (like... even the at-many-times bratty Superboy '94 era Kon wasn't like that towards her! it is seriously out of nowhere i am utterly fucking baffled), stick him back in fucking high school again (as if YJ 2019 hadn't... had him explicitly on page decide he was done with that and done with just trying to be a carbon copy of Clark BEFORE he even got sent to Gemworld!), and just have a poor grasp on his current history/his personality/his voice as a character imo.

I have seen several people point out that the writer of this backup story doesn't actually have anything else with Kon currently slated so it's very possible that other books may not really be paying all that much mind/attention to this story/the characterization/choices in it, and so while it's frustrating that it exists it could in the end not have the biggest impact on things in the long term, but it's still just... wow. It feels like such a slap in the face after Superboy: Man of Tomorrow, I can tell ya that.

And like... one thing I do want to note, is that in the comments the writer has made about this story on twitter, she's made it clear part of what she was going for here is trying to approach who Kon could be outside of/after Superboy... but I simply do not think undoing the character work that was literally just done with him is the right way to approach that. I think from where things left off in Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow one could easily have started to ask those sorts of questions and approach that subject without backtracking and random retcons and OOC behavior which all make it really frustrating to read for longtime fans of the character.

I think I could probably really dig Jason/Rose if they actually developed it more deeply! I’m a bit sick of will they/won’t they’s that go nowhere and get dragged out for years, or start and stop and start and stop, y’know? Like whatever it was they were doing with Dick and Babs post-New 52 but before they got back together, where we got years of shallow interactions interspersed with entirely too intense reactions for two people who weren’t actually dating, with a heaping side of everyone around them always making weird comments about their non-existent relationship. My point is, the back-and-forth banter and flirting and stuff is cute now, but they’ve either gotta commit to it eventually or drop it, which would be fine with me, I also like them as friends! Bring back Eddie

Oh for sure. I mean, this speaks to a larger problem with current DC*, where they simply refuse to develop relationships in any meaningful way, in part because there are so few ongoings in which they can do so. Either we get the kind of relationship you're describing, where we get sporadic interactions with everyone acting like there's a serious relationship there, or a brand-new character is introduced and the romance goes from zero to 60 without developing either the new OC or the relationship (*stares in Jon/Jay*), or two long-established characters who have barely interacted are suddenly dating and we're supposed to care (*stares in Kon/M'gann*). My kingdom for forty issues of Wally and Linda bickering while falling in love against their will.

*(Because I always feel like I need a disclaimer whenever I criticize current DC: I think the company is healthier than it's been in like 20 years and is putting out comics I am largely enjoying. But this issue has been irking me. GIVE ME ONGOINGS!!!)

i, for one, love yj tv, but most of my issues with it come from the way certain characters are written and not made to face the consequences of their actions (cough cough m'gann cough cough). but also taking a friendship they built up so strongly in one season, knowing they'd have one of the characters be queer, and then throwing that character together with someone he had never met before romantically and not even having the balls to say that they were romantically inclined.

theres a lot of issues with the show, and i have a few very specific pieces of beef that permeate the entire show for me, but theres also countless other things i love about the little disconnected dc universe they created!

Okay so bad opinions incoming but I don't mind that m'gann didn't face too many consequences for what she did in season two (mostly bc season 2 m'gann was the most fun I had watching her) like obviously the main consequences of her actions in season two was meant to be her almost permanently damaging a good friend of hers bc she kept using her powers without thought and she almost ruined a undercover mission as well like that's the point of consequences to learn a lesson to not do the bad thing any more and m'gann learnt that lesson so I was happy enough... would have preferred if her and kon didn't get back together but thats also just me not really caring much about their relationship to begin with

I am a wee bit confused about the friendship in season 1 your talking about tho? I presume you mean Kaldur but I'm not sure who the other person is? - either way once again I liked that I like how realistic it felt, also a lot of what happens in yj we don't actually get to see we the audience are usually trusted to put the pieces together ourselves about what happens in the inbetween the bits they show and I know alot of people don't really enjoy that type of story telling but I love it its why the time skips never really bother me

RIGHT. like. in general i have a complicated love/hate relationship with the YJ cartoon, because while I think some things are very cool I also just straight up hate how they chose to adapt SEVERAL characters. But even putting that sort of stuff aside to just think about this within the context of 'plotline in the show' rather than 'adaptations of these comic characters'....

i think there was the potential for a really interesting story there with what happened between M'gann and Conner, but they just fumbled it so fucking hard. Because rather than actually making it into an appropriately addressed plotline about violation of consent leading to the end of a relationship... they have this fucking mess happen

them getting back together and then getting married just. god. i haaaate it!!!!!!!!!! i hate it i hate it. if the writers wanted them to be an endgame couple perhaps they should not have written a plot where she tries to erase his memories of him being mad at her for crossing lines and abusing her powers, treated it like a big enough reason to breakup and cause tension btwn them for like a whole season, but then backtrack and act like 'nvm its not actually THAT big a deal teehee' later on. like maybe that wasn't a great idea guys!!!!!!!!

and then to put back on my comics canon brain, i think it's extra fucked up that one of the VERY FEW similarities between comics Kon & YJ cartoon Conner is ending up in a toxic relationship with a redhead from another planet that manipulates them. but at least Superboy '94—a comic RENOWNED for handling serious topics fucking horribly—manages to paint Kon & Knockout's relationship as an overall bad thing... meanwhile Conner & M'gann get fucking married.

okay well, he and dick would get along super well. both are chatterboxes, both get serious when they need to be. both enjoy being acrobatic. peter would also laugh at just about every one of his little word game things he does. i think they'd also be able to bond over the loss of their parents and uncle. obviously I think that peter and dick would be bffs in any universe thanks to @fightwing like it'd actually be such an important relationship for peter.

wally - I think they'd get along due to both being science geeks (though peter is much better fight me on it) he'd think wally was pretty cool though, probably wonder how seriously he takes being kid flash too cause he'd see him as a bit of a goofball.

kaldur - he would actually really like kaldur, the way he's so dedicated and doesn't tolerate any bologna. it's a bit of a contrast to how peter takes being spider-man, he appears as a nonchalant person who is having fun. but underneath it all, it's a serious dedication and something peter considers to be the most important thing he does. pete would like him and wanna get to know him more.

m'gann - he'd think she's kind and caring, be a bit worried about having his mind read cause when he's younger he has more than a little guilt and pain he's carrying around. he'd probably spend more time learning about her bioship and trying to study it tbh fjaksldj

conner - if we're talking about superboy in the show, he'd probably not be the biggest fan of him. he'd slightly partial cause he has a soft spot for clones (obvs) but he'd also get tired of his temper real quick. also it's hard for me to say he'd be close to that interpretation of conner when @supermantm and I have pete and kon being besties jfaksdj.

and obviously you and I have talked a lot about how he and artemis would get along hehe
