My recent haul included a Ribon "newspaper" furoku from May 1984, and I only intended to scan the Ikeno bits, but turns out this is AH-MAZING so I decided to scan all four pages to share. Basically, a ton of the Ribon artists active at the time answer three questions: "who's your ideal man?" "what does the room you draw manga in look like?" and "what's your pet?" Highlights:

Ikeno draws basically Shun as her ideal man, except I don't think Shun is much of a reader???

I like 80s music so I'm always excited to see manga artists of the time draw or talk about new wave musicians; this is Hagiiwa Mutsumi's fanart of David Sylvian from the band Japan, her ideal man.

Ichijo Yukari saying she's not greedy and doesn't have high ideals for men's looks, they just have to be "about as handsome as Bowie", which lol.

I'm not sure who this guitarist is supposed to be, all hair metal dudes look the same to me. Michael Schenker, I guess, since Gonoue was apparently a fan?

Future Boy Conan / Yokoyama Mitsuteru's Babel II / Chiba Tetsuya's Shidenkai no Taka (also a childhood favorite of Takemiya Keiko)

Tabuchi Yumiko, one of my favorite Ribon artists, was already married at this point, so she says her "ideal man" is someone who doesn't stay in their pajamas to lazy around in the kotatsu all Sunday. Tabuchi married a Ribon editor and has written some autobiographical works about her marriage and her children, in which she depicts her husband as... a sea lion.

Tabuchi also draws her work space, which is the kitchen. On a side note I just adore Tabuchi's art so much... she has this totally unique yet adorable style and her free hand backgrounds and items make me go ugh, so good.

Ikeno also draws her work space, where we can see Ranze's penguin plushy <3

This furoku also features photos of some of the artists' work spaces, and we get an awesome intimate look at Ichijo Yukari's work desk!

More proof of how popular British new wave and rock was among Japanese manga artists in the 80s... there's one more David Sylvian there, and I think I spot Simon Le Bon?

I'm fascinated by this goose in the middle of Ogura Fuyumi's room.

Seven Thirteen Sentence Sunday 🫶🏽

Hey guys back again with some of the healing fic which is mostly just the pre healing still lol so it’s just the depression 😭💀. I haven’t shared any Buck running fic recently and that’s mostly cause I think I have shared like >80% of them what I’ve written for it lol so I should prolly not share the whole thing and actually write more first. So instead you get more of the healing fic which I haven’t shared too much so here you go! Lol I just realised how similar these two fics are sksksk but I promise they are different fics!!!!!!

He feels disgusting.

He’s thirty years old. He’s thirty years old but here he is with his shirt unbuttoned and his pants undone, looking like he did when he was twenty five, Buck 1.0, sleeping with anyone who looked at him twice. He’s broken. He’s a mess. He’s thirty and every time he closes his eyes he’s watching his best friend die. Over and over.

He’s watching Eddie bleeding out and it hurts because they haven’t even talked about that day at all but he can’t fucking stop seeing it. He wonders what Eddie would think if he saw him like this. If he’d care. If he’d find him as repulsive as he feels.

He’s thirty but he feels like the twelve year old boy whose sister just left, whose parents didn’t love him. Who was never enough to make anyone stay.

Penacony TB 2.1 Impression

Contains heavy spoiler and mostly a rant so don't read it if you still not finish the story (lol)

Before unto the stories, I must say I kinda get the reasons why hoyo put Acheron in first banner and Aventurine in second half after read TB 2.1. For Acheron, I think her identity as emenator nihility is the key lore to expose before 2.1 began so there's need to expose it at trailer (despite her reasoning coming to Penacony still unknown somehow lol). While for Aventurine, this is kinda delulu on my side but there's possibility we might know the things happened to him after 2.1 from his daily message.

Onto stories, I only say one line... IT'S VERY HONKAI VIBE ! Telling one person stories from they born into the one we know now with angsty vibe of course lol. You know, the things I scare when hoyo release Acheron trailer and myriad celestial is how Aventurine past can beat that honkai queen and (un)fortunately I was wrong (lol)

IT'S FULL BLOW OF AVENTURINE DARK PAST and yeah hoyo score a full mark with it !

For composition I think it's 80% Aventurine PoV and 20% others which is unsuprisingly since I'm pretty sure he will not appear again for future Penacony chapter but what I'm suprise is so far Astral Express basically can't do anything much in Penacony so yeah Xianzhou Luofu TB back again.

Despite that, I'm very happy with TB 2.1 like this is what Honkai story should do ! Up until now, I always thought HSR still not show their full equipment and pretty weak with their story, Tingyun only snapping some head isn't near those previous Honkai heels you know (lol).

I'm going to talk a long rant on 80% since hoyo decided to love him with his so well written stories and I love him too (XD)

The things with Aventurine and Ratio, I guess this what we would called "same mind don't need talk much". They're bickering so well, even acted betray each others without any communication and smooth enough to fool Sunday

But sorry I'm not getting fool (I know they're soulmate lol), the reason is I found one hole in Sunday Ratio convo here

Ratio saying about cornerstone is so precious to ten stonehearts but the box contain can be opened by other than them ? If that's true, I can't believe someone like Aventurine would risk someone like that participate in his grand scheme without reasons... plus Ratio doesn't strike me as someone who sells his teammate or what he called him lol no matter how iritatting he is especially only for pursuing knowledge, since it sounds so idiocy.

Suprising fact, he even try kill himself few times at dreamscape ! Like is that something you can try out of fun even If knowing you can't die ? Well yeah, in first place he doesn't mind to die anytime but doing it yourself and passive talk are two different things you know...

two question I thought Aventurine never answer directly which is pretty related. First of all, different than Sunday which I think he's type of "I will kill everyone and then myself if they hurt my sister" but he's already at own limit to think for his own survival + he doesn't have anyone to get revenge for. Elation still have some excitement when saw someone in despair but I don't think Aventurine (at that time) could feels same, well we don't know things after 2.1 since his past chains severed by Acheron, maybe he will open a new leaf (I hope so, let him live happily ever after with Ratio or Elation or even Trailblazing with us sounds good too lol)

It stabilize the fact that Aventurine and Ratio are good friends despite their talk, voiceline, and teammate voiceline at least from Ratio side which is the vital point Aventurine still alive as now. I really skeptic on his dead or alive status at 2.1 livestream, well mostly I can't believe any Shaoji said that time (plus the fact Gallagher is just a normal bartender lol)

TB 2.1 conclude with opening a new terrain with dreamscape's secrets, the Family and Watchmaker aren't same side, IPC will added another ten stonehearts member to game, a mysterious voice will join the fray. Penacony story so far so good, even their newest branch stories execute nicely but I don't have any excitement anymore now knowing Aventurine not gonna show up anymore (XD).

Now with Aventurine closed his screentime, I think Acheron (her past and purpose coming to Penacony still not reveal much), Firefly Sam (SH motive and she need to pursuading TB), Jade and/or Topaz (replacing Aventurine role) will play a bigger parts for future version

Put aside that, my 220 pull still on waiting for Aven banner ! I kinda had bad feelings about his banner pull, even my relics planar farming still not done even after I started doing it from BlackSwan banner...

Teague family modern headcanon

-teague like the rock n' pop music of the 60s/70s/80s (/90s).

-he loves the Beatles and always has them as background music at home. that's why Jack knows all the songs word for word

-Jack was home-schooled as a child

-Teague likes to travel, he meet Jack's mother during a journey in south america.

-He has never been married, and has no intention of doing so

-valerie is a sport fanatic

-the key dog is, in fact, called Dog

-all the family live in a building of 5 apartments , even if they don't technically live together each enters the other's house without warning. (it's not strange to find one of your cousins in the living room when you come back from school lol)

-on Sundays and holidays they all eat in grandmama's apartment

-(I honestly think this is obvious to everyone in the fandom but) Jack has ADHD

-Jack is actually quite good at school but his attitude doesn't make him have a good reputation with teachers'

-he can pass exams without difficulty and often without the need to study

-when he started public school he immediately found it boring, for many subjects they had to put him in higher grades since as a homeschooler he was far ahead of kids his age

-that's how he meet Fitz

-Jack have black nail polish

-He always wears the bracelets he collects while traveling with his father around the world

-he have ear piercings (mostly done by himself or with a friend)

-McFlemling is an artist and has a studio that is always messy, when Valerie and Jack were little they loved to go there

-there Is no table, they eat in the Isle of the "mini bar"

-you'd think it was the home of a former hippie or rock star (and you wouldn't be wrong)

-the walls are decorated with both guitars collected over the years, and some shelves with books and bottles of alcohol (and some a bong here and there)

-arround the appartament you can also find musical instruments from rural places.

-there Is a spot only for show off the vinils

Jack's room

-they live on the top floor. so Jack's room is in the attic

-he have a French bed, at the foot of which there Is the dog's bed (even though he always ends up sleeping in bed with Jack)

-he also have a hammock swing attached to the ceiling

-and two desks according to him the large one is used for "studying" and the small one is used as a make-up station.

-he have a drawer under his bed covered by the blanket in which he keeps some light drugs and cigarettes

-plus he have a few mini bottles of alcohol in his room, he doesn't remember where he put them

-surprise surprise he actually have many shelves full of books

Teague's room(s)

-Teague's room is a little more sober. he has a double bed, around the room there are several "object holders", in particular he has one in which he keeps all the drawings that Jack made for him when he was still little, he keeps them under the bed (no one I know about it)

-he have one photo of Jack's mother. it's a bit ruined, but he don't really care.

-he has a "study" next to his room, in the study there is a brown leather armchair with his guitar in its container in the corner and a display case of alcohol. one wall of the room is so full of books that you can't see the bricks and among the books there is a photo album in which he keeps photos of the most important people in his life

terrible playlists no one asked for!

this year has been big for me in terms of djing and how it is very much about the curation of a space, what towns prefer as opposed to cities, which countries are more open to niche preferences than others.

i also started making mixed CDs for my friends again, it's something i stopped doing in 2019 when i caved and started using spotify (and here i am now, intending to move away from the platform lol). it's really nice to make gifts for your friends, esp when you are constantly away from your home city/country.

the sunday sessions volumes - every sunday evening, my best friend and i program music for an hour or two. vibe depends on the day. vol 1 is quite moody but chill i.e king woman, slowdive, chelsea wolfe

‘Robert Smith isn’t people’s perceptions’: Stories behind classic photos of The Cure

As the Cure head out on tour across the UK, renowned photographer Tom Sheehan takes us on a trip through some classic pictures of the band.

Tom Sheehan has been taking photos of The Cure since the ’80s. Snatching moments on tour in dressing rooms around the world. Persuading the band to pose in major European cities. Capturing that intense connection Robert Smith has with the camera, and acting as a conduit to the readers of Melody Maker, NME, Sounds and Record Mirror.

Sheehan’s new book The Cure: Pictures of You is a visual record of one of the UK’s most influential bands. As The Cure head out on tour across the UK, Sheehan looks back on his decades of working with the band to share his memories and the behind-the-scenes stories of some of his favourite shots.

The first time I met Robert [Smith] and Lol [Tolhurst, the Cure’s former drummer] was at the Shepherds Bush Hilton in 1982. The Cure were supporting the Banshees, and Robert was also playing in the Banshees so he was a tired boy, I guess.

We were under the cosh because they were about to head off to soundcheck. So, my journalist colleague got about 20 minutes on tape. I got a few frames of them going through a revolving door going out of the hotel. When I look at those pictures, I see there’s a lot of humour going on.

On that half roll of film, the majority of them they’re larking about and Robert was smiling. It was a very comfortable entry into the world of The Cure. There’s that kind of rolling humour that The Cure have, which, luckily for me, I seem to have tapped into from our very first encounter. The perception of Robert at that time wasn’t a very happy guy. He isn’t what people’s perceptions of him are.

Prior to a band recording or doing a gig or whatever, there’s always a little bit of camaraderie. You’re setting things up and there might be a little bit of joshing going on, but the minute you start rolling, you’re working. I’m performing as much as they are. They’ve got to respond to me.

Robert does have a reputation for being a control freak, but I think he hands over the baton to whoever is working with. He ain’t going to leap through hoops of fire, and it was never in my modus operandi to get pictures that made the turn look foolish. But I think he trusts people that he knows can do the job.

This was on The Top tour. I joined them in Italy. They were quite a tight band. There’s always this thing when you join a band on tour, even if they know you a bit, you still feel like the outsider because you’re not part of the gang. Although you might be an honorary member for two or three days, you’re an outsider. It’s like you can’t argue with a married couple. It’s the same with any band, you know: they’ve got their own lingo, their own ways. You’re witnessing it, but you’re actually outside of it. And you’ll never be able to penetrate it.

That statue with a fountain is in Bologna, and it’s on a Sunday morning. The day before, the gig was great… but earlier on in the day, Robert had a dicky tummy. I think he’d eaten a dodgy prawn or something and he was laying on the on the dressing room floor, groaning in pain prior to soundcheck.

He recovered enough the next morning to go out. But it was a case of, let’s nail it. So that was just a quick once around the block and take some pictures. It was really fortuitous that there was some nice architecture around to utilise.

I have a history of them doing stuff [for other photographers] and me walking in and taking over the studio. There was this really famous Italian photographer who was shooting them for a really high-end publication. This guy was set up and then he was done, and he was talking to his assistant. I just shifted the lights around a bit, and whacked off a couple of frames. That was on the hoof, you know? If something presents itself, you just go to go, there you go chaps. And bang, bang, bang. This picture is the one Lol used on the cover of the UK version of his biography, Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys.

Getting Robert out of bed: The Cure on tour in Brussels, November 1987

It was a Saturday night, they played some club in Brussels which I can’t recall. We’re in the dressing room and Robert’s sorting out his hair and all that stuff. I’ve just got a couple of plastic backgrounds on a wall and I’m just saying, “Robert, the blue one.” I’m getting them as they’re ready.

If they’re getting ready for a show, they don’t really want me in their in their hair as well. So I pinned up two backgrounds next to each other so I could switch, one to the other. Then the Melody Maker’s got a choice of colours.

Those pictures have quite clear lighting, they’re quite defined. Good for a cover, perhaps. But I was gagging for something in daylight. So, I said to Robert, can we meet tomorrow lunchtime? I get there at one or two o’clock, and the bugger’s still in bed. It was in November, and it was getting dark. So, I thought I better go from street level up to the roof. And then Robert turns up and it’s that classic kind of ‘Tommy, do I really have to be here?’ kinda look. This kind of weathered, aged, ‘is this totally necessary?’ look. I always remember it, because it doesn’t look as dark as it was getting… or maybe it was just my sheer panic.

‘Give us your eyes’: The Cure on tour in France, 1989

This was a swifty – dive in and dive out. You can’t take a photograph of The Cure in their fatigues. You can’t do it until he’s ready, in the sense of made up, ready to go. The eyes are on, the lips on, the hair’s done. If they if they’ve got a gig coming, I have to be quite economical with the time because they’re on stage in 30 minutes.

Robert is really good at connecting with the camera. He knows what’s required. It’s not like the [Melody] Maker was some sort of art magazine. You couldn’t have some enigmatic, looking-at-the-stars shot, because it’d be too dark and the ink would fuck up. A lot of time it had to be quite clean.

When Melody Maker, along with the NME and Sounds and Record Mirror, was sitting with a multitude of other magazines on the news stand at Tottenham Court Road when you come out of the tube station, you’ve got to be able to see those minces [mince pies, rhyming slang for eyes] on the other side of the road. Every time I’m working with a man, whoever I’m photographing, I say, give us your eyes. Unless you got eye contact, you can’t expect people to look at it the same way.

Sometimes when you look into the lens and look into their eyes, it is a bit of a staring competition. With Robert I think he’s always been confident. I mean, God knows what he thinks about in his own time, but when he’s working his confidence is great. He’s always appeared to be older than his years as well.

This was a great day out. The band were done in the southwest recording [the album Wild Mood Swings] in that actress’s house [Jane Seymour’s house, St Catherine’s Court in Somerset]. I came down when they’d been stuck in the studio for a couple of weeks, so I’m sure they wanted a distraction. In other words, taking the piss out of a mature lensman. So, off we went.

Robert was, and probably still is, a member of the National Trust. So he had it all worked out, where we’re were going. We got in a van and we just travelled around. We went to Cheddar Gorge and all round that area. Robert had made a few notes, so he’d be looking at the map, and saying, “Coming up is…”

The horse doesn’t have any hidden meaning. It’s just the British countryside. But I like to think it confused a lot of people overseas, in Japan or whatever.

It was 2005, and The Cure were in Westside Studios recording. I was taking a picture of Robert with a copy of Bowie’s …Ziggy Stardust… for series of portraits on music icons and the records that inspired them. I said to him, “let’s get a couple of other portraits while we’re here”. There was this spiral staircase outside, so we headed there. Robert said to me “you’ll do better getting me from above…” and he was right. I like taking photos from above, you get a better line on people’s jaw. Their faces look better.

I think Robert worked out his relationship between him and the camera. I mean, he got his whole thing together, didn’t he? With the hair and the lips and the clobber. If you’ve got all that stuff around, you could confuse the viewer. So I’d always say, I still want the eyes. I want that contact.

to begin my noble quest of being more annoying (a neutral term for me meaning: efforts to be more outspoken about my interests)

i literally just want to make lists of shit i am into so you all can get a better feel for who i am and why i write what i do and hopefully find things in common <3

music: not to be that guy but i genuinely do listen to everything. though not in a "play whatever it's nbd," but in a "music has been a special interest of mine since childhood and i have made hours long multi-genre playlists every month since my senior year of high school" BUT some current favorites include: Blondshell Searows Elton John (and by extension George Michael, duh. friendship of the century. Elton just came first and led me to George) Simon and Garfunkel Faye Webster Dijon Eagles Feist The Sundays Prince Chappell Roan Gorillaz Fiona Apple i am cutting myself off now, but trust there are many more and they are swirling in my head at all times.

film similarly i have such a taste for movies that's all over the place and often go against people's perception of me (i am a lesbian with a philosophy minor whose primary focus was feminist theory and i fucking loves James Bond) but that's what makes it FUN! film and fiction in general is literally a playground. So this is gonna be a mix of specific movies and directors! Weekly Writing and Reading Update

oh shit that's right it's sunday

(I am eating a lil plate of nibbles ahead of a dinner of leftover cheesy breadsticks and shrimp cocktail, and I will eventually open a bottle of champagne. yes I am still blissfully grooving on my decision to stay in tonight. I will be in bed at 9 and lights out at 11 as per my usual. I cannot wait.)

Writing

I finished Beginnings! I'm kind of politely surprised at the wordcount; I certainly enjoyed writing it but it felt rather like a necessary starting point before moving onto much more fun stories; I didn't expect it to be such a long starting point! Still, pleased it's done and dusted.

crimmis story: a very doofy lil canon-verse story set in the 80's. I am excited to finish this in January when no one wants to read a Christmas story, lol

untitled next Found Family story: in which they go into spaaaaaaace, it's lots of worldbuilding and super super fun.

I am definitely writing more slowly, but I think a bit better for all that.

Reading

I finished Tolkien and the Great War which was like...3/4 very good. The last quarter was a fairly inexplicable and incredibly boring discursion on the early versions of what would, essentially, become the Silmarillion. Although a lot of his early works and early conceptions of what the Middle Earth mythology would be do tie into his life and experiences as a very young man in a hellish situation, this was just like...a recitation. And it was followed by a brilliant analysis of why Tolkien turned to an older medieval storytelling form instead of the modernists that we think of when it comes to the usual WWI writing! It was so good! The good parts of this books are so good! I simply cannot bring myself to care about the phoneme shifts his languages undergo.

It did remind me that I want to return to Paul Fussell's writing in 2024, so there is that?

Also Tolkien's bitchy disapproval of the aesthetes is never not hilarious to me.

(I do want to collect all my 2023 book reviews into a single post/document for my own use, I will maybe do that tomorrow? Soonish, anyway!)

I got to check three things off my Dragon Con to-do list today -- and add one more: a try-on and makeup test-run for punk!Rhaenyra. But hey, three steps forward and one step back isn't so bad, lol.

I am really happy with how the screen-accurate red dress is coming together and I cannot wait to wear it. There's a House of the Dragon/World of Ice and Fire photo meetup on Friday afternoon and it's my only Must Not Miss event for Friday. It'll be fun to get pictures with other people in costume, and commiserate over the complicated nature of HotD/GoT costuming.

Buuut, as much as I'm looking forward to finishing this dress and wearing it around con, every time I put it on I realize that there is definitely going to come a point in the evening when I want to get out of my super fancy silk gown and into something more casual for the evening parties. And thus the idea of punk!Rhaenyra was born.

So sometime Friday evening I'll go back to my hotel room and take off the red dress, re-adjust my Rhaenyra wig, put on a bunch more makeup, and switch to this look with the Targaryen tank top and red-and-black plaid skirt. I'll be pairing it with my big Doc Martens (which will have red laces already in by then) and the Valyrian steel necklace, and several accessories from my Harley Quinn outfit. My hope is that it'll read as Targaryen punk while being comfortable and easy to dance and drink and lounge in.

That puts my planned costumes for the weekend up to six total. Now that photo meetups and evening parties have been announced, my schedule is looking pretty locked in:

Thursday night: 80s prom

Friday daytime: Rhaenyra's red dress from eps 7 and 8

Friday night: punk Rhaenyra

Saturday all day: Harley Quinn in a Taylor Swift tshirt

Sunday daytime: Oswin Oswald from Asylum of the Daleks

Sunday night: Clara Oswald from Mummy on the Orient Express

As far as parties, I'm planning on hitting up the 80s prom (obviously) on Thursday night and the Doctor Who ball on Sunday night. Photoshoots I'm planning to be at include the House of the Dragon gathering on Friday afternoon, and the Harley Quinn gathering on Saturday afternoon. I've heard there might be a Taylor Swift meetup too, and if that happens to be on Saturday I'll try to swing by there with my 'we are never getting back together. like ever.' tshirt.

I've got maybe half an hour left today to work on the hem a bit, but after that I'll be down to 36 days to finish everything up for Dragon Con. If I can keep having days like this where I knock a bunch of stuff off my list, my to-do list should be in good shape a month from now. But I am so excited to wear all of these costumes that it's keeping me extra motivated.

Hokay. Back to pinning that hem facing.
