on today’s episode of essay-length hot takes nobody asked for:

So I freak out and internally implode whenever ~bughead~ doesn’t let their ship set sail as much as the next person, but I’ve been (over) thinking about it and maybe doing all this weird ‘everyone breaking up and going to the person they dont really work with’ is actually a good thing in the long run.

Not saying I like it, in fact I have approximately seven fanfics that deeply demonstrate HOW MUCH i don’t like it, but this is the canon storyline we’ve got.

Since the writers clearly want to drag it all out for as long as possible because they… want to (their choice, its their work of art, we can only glare at it from afar), perhaps they’re trying to go full circle and prove that couples like bughead, varchie, choni and even kangs are the ones that will work out in the end.

here’s my reasoning:

Yes, I have scrolled as fast as humanly possible through my dashboard to avoid the jughead and tabitha gifs, and earlier today learned that they sang ‘perfect for you’ and my immediate reaction, after I’d finished mourning their platonic friendship, was just *vomit emoji*. But, then I saw the lyrics to perfect for you…. And it sounds like Jughead is trying to change himself into being someone ‘perfect’ so that tabitha will like him. That just doesn’t strike me as either healthy or long lasting. He shouldn’t HAVE to change himself to be in a relationship with Tabitha. Get better, yes, because he’s recovering, but change himself??? They were good friends, they worked well as a team, but in none of those interactions did he try to change himself to make her happy. So why is he now??

And take Fangs and Toni for a moment - they just had a baby together, and they’re apparently in love after one episode (hey if it works for barchie and veggie then why not -.-), but really, aren’t they doing this because they work well as a team and are starting to think ‘maybe we can be a perfect little happy family’???

And Veronica and Archie (won’t lie didn’t watch the musical ep so can’t be sure) broke up because they see themselves doing different things in life (?) and veronica wants to go back to New York. And she wants to work on herself (valid) and for some reason goes back to Reggie the sister-swapping gigolo next ep (whom she made THIS face at when she found out:

But I digress.)

With this in mind, I would assume Veronica is fearful that, like she lost herself in her relationship with Chad, she’ll lose herself in her relationship with Archie because he isn’t a big time New York City high roller like Reggie must want to be. So she’s hoping that maybe Reggie, who she works well with in a team, could be the one for her.

Now, Betty and Archie…. My soul shivers with cold despair as I even type this, but let’s humour them for a second. Archie is upset that veronica has left him, betty has been shown to use sex as a coping mechanism to avoid her trauma, makes sense they might start their FWB situation again, right??

Except…

Betty is devastated by the loss of her sister and needs to stay in Riverdale, Archie needs to stay in riverdale because he has 673 jobs there, and both of them have shit they want to move on from or be distracted from - they’ve been shown to work well (dare i say it?) as a team, and they’re apparently good friends with each other, so why not give dating a go since their first choices (and make no mistake, Veronica is Archie’s first choice and Jughead was Betty’s first choice) are unavailable and they’re both depressed, traumatised and lonely??

So this should all be just fine and dandy, then right?? Everyone’s happy with their friends-to-lovers relationships, they can frolic blissfully in Pickens park with the loves of their lives shouting “Go teamwork!” Because this is the height of passion! Right??

No.

None of the above mentioned ships have achieved anything more than showing that the characters are SETTLING for the relationships that are ‘second’ best because they’ve come to the conclusion that this is safer than going for the ones they really love. You can’t get burned by your second choice because they don’t hold your heart in their hands - after all, you haven’t truly given it to them.

So if all goes to what I think (hope) is the plan, then by the end of this mysterious 5 episode event, most of these ships should have realised that their relationships are all just relationships of convenience. They aren’t passionate about each other. They are trying to force themselves into a ‘perfect’ relationship that suits what they think they need.

But inevitably:

Betty will realise that nobody understands her like Jughead. Nobody else lets her feel vulnerable and shows her its okay to open up. Jughead will realise he doesn’t have to change himself to suit a relationship, and he and Tabitha can still be friends - Betty accepted his darkness for what it was, and he loved her even when she showed him hers.

Veronica will realise that she doesn’t have to give up being who she is, even if she chooses to live in Riverdale. And she doesn’t need to be with another Hiram-Lodge wanna be - she loves the small town boy who tries to be good rather than rich. She sees the value in his desire to help others, and HE sees her passionate nature and refusal to give up when she knows something is right!

Toni and Fangs will part amicably as happy little coparents, and i’m sure Kevin and Cheryl will eventually sort their shit out - what’s beautiful about these four though, is that they’ve been working on themselves all season and have actually spoken to each other a fair bit. I’m not even going to pretend to know whats up with Cheryl, but she at least leaves Thornhill occasionally now, and while I don’t know how its going to happen, i’m sure kangs and choni will rise.

On that note, fangs still doesn’t know kevin wanted to win him back, so that can be some actual tension between the characters in the coming episodes.

So where does that leave Tabitha and Reggie?

I can see it going two ways: 1. Tabitha franchises pops diner and moves back to Chicago where she doesn’t need no man, and Reggie keeps being a little philanthropist car salesman (possibly still hooking up with veronica’s sister) 2. #Teggie rising???

They’re both very driven people, both business-minded, both excited about the opportunities life has to offer AND they’ve both been shown to be incredibly ambitious.

They’ve hardly interacted this entire season…. Maybe the writers are Saving a sneaky little surprise for when all the main ships get back together??

We can hope.

Anyway, I wrote this instead of an overdue essay (a real one for my masters degree) so i’m gonna leave my theories in the tumblr void for the time being. Let me know what you think :)

so im a barchie and tbh i dont think i wanna be in this side of the fandom anymore. Its just becoming so toxic and some of the things people are saying actually disgust me, like slut shaming v, thats just not on. So on my half of the fandom im really sorry about what they are saying about Veronica and varchie. I would never say what they say about them and i actually quite like varchie. You can really see the chemistry between them and that Archie actually really cares about Veronica.

listen, it’s not your fault. no need to apologize at all. i’m sure that there are many ba fans out there who aren’t nasty and just want or would like their ship to have content. i know - for years being a serenate shipper, i know what it feels like when the writers won’t allow your ship to even interact on screen as friends because people take it the wrong way and it starts getting messy in the fandom. it’s one of the reasons why m/f friendships isn’t really well-portrayed in “teen dramas”.

but anyway, my big problem is exactly with what you said, people talk too much about veronica, even about camila and kj who are just doing their jobs, and it’s a mess. i know that there are some nasty people in every fandom, though. it’s not exclusive.

anyway, if you like varchie, i hope you grow to like them even more and to believe in the story that riverdale is telling. ❤️️

Hello baby im writing this bcs you help me before is something weird is happening lately i felt least invested on bughead maybes is bcs the hiatus, maybe its bcs im not worried about bh endgame anymore. The thing is that i started to be invested on something else and i hate it, and sadly is lili and cole relationship more on their break up and i hate bcs i never pay attention to it before i never was invested i through they were a cute couple and that was all.

But lately i had been feeling more anxious about and its stupid bcs i wonder why they broke up, if they were still in love when they make it, why take that decision, when they broke up and if they are on good terms.

the true its we probably never know, i know he is with someone and i know they are both proffesionals and we will get our endgame, again maybe its the hiatus maybe its teh lack of content I'm trying to figute out what hiatus was words for me.

I hope you could give me and advice i know its stupid but in reality im tired of think about it bit i cant stop.

And I think this is one of those things that nobody talks about but many feel. I know I have. I really think personally, it has to do with lockdown. I have really done nothing but be all in on the Riverdale fandom and Bughead for the last year. It's a daily, constant cycle of fanfiction, Tumblr and chats. And a lot of that has kept me sane, but we have just lived through an insane time, and I for one am ready to stop living in "unprecedented times", and having to rely on these characters has created an element of apathy. What I'm saying is some element of boredom with the show or the couple is normal and nothing to be sad about. For me, it seems to have affected every couple, not just Bughead. Sure, I'm still reading Wyndoc and Rollisi fanfic. But I'm not feeling the same pull I used to. For Riverdale, a lot of that is attributed to these insanely long breaks and the way we've been jerked around as a fandom this last year. Riverdale hasn't been at its best, and has been really off-putting and disheartening.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, this would be such a better season to binge rather than watch live. You could cut through the large swaths of useless plot and bullshit that has plagued this season.

I really don't speculate on Sprousehart, but I can absolutely see how the breakup would cause you some sadness as well. Some people, though, get along a lot better when they're not together. And it doesn't seem to have affected the Bughead scenes. May I humbly recommend unfollowing both of them on social media? I know it's not something most of us want to do, but it will honestly feel like a weight lifted. I'm not saying there won't be times where you'll still see something on Tumblr and it'll make you sad, but not having to open SM apps and brace yourself is going to be so relieving to you. That's a large part of the reason I unfollow over the summer. Instagram and Twitter don't tag or allow blocking of tags. If I couldn't have done that over the whole Barchie arc, I'm not sure I would still be on Tumblr.

And know that you should feel whatever you need to feel, honey. I am a proponent of the theory that if you fight the bad feelings off, you are giving them power over you. I can't tell you how much relief I've come to in acknowledging and verbalizing the feelings. Tell yourself "Yes, I am feeling sad right now because....." Don't try to rationalize it, don't judge yourself for feeling this way. Just let yourself recognize that feeling. Write it down as well if you'd find it helpful. That takes away the power these feelings have over you, when you stop fighting it off. Also, please remember to give yourself some of the grace you'd surely give others. Don't think you don't deserve that same grace.

no no, what you all need to understand is that these actors dont actually care for this ships as much as we do? kj ships barchie as much as he ships vegas and hot dog. trust me he doesnt care for either of these ships. what you all need to understand is that he doesnt prefer one over the other and has said multiple times he thinks varchie is endgame as well as barchie. he's just saying what the fans want to hear and obviously cant say negative things about either ship. but otherwise the actors dont have much say in anything of the writing, they simply just do their job which is promoting the show and that includes whatever is going on with the ships

Do you think you’re going to change my mind on this?

I know for the most part actors work with what they’re given, and play to different fandoms. Sometimes they don’t, though. And this is a relatively young cast that started even younger. They’ve shown preference. Hell, Lili shot down barchie many times. Her saying that they were done in like.. season 2 didn’t change that they still touched on them many times and kissed, and had sex. So yes, they don’t have a say.

Again I acknowledge that KJ has said positives for vrchie. But from what I saw, he genuinely wanted barchie explored, and/or endgame. And he can talk up vrchie if he wants, but I do feel bad for him because he did express recently enough that as an actor he wanted something fresh. And now he gets this, again after a really short time. *shrug* Does it matter that I think any of this?

I am so excited for tonights episode and seeing what Barchie have in store for us but I have seen that some people are concerned that if it is Barchie in the shower together and it is real and not a dream or something (there is some speculation that its Jughead’s nightmare) then Betty is cheating again because she is with Glen which is bad for her character development. But here’s my thoughts on it. First off at this point we don’t know for sure that Betty actually is in a relationship with Glen, we know they’ve got something going on between them but unlike with Jughead and Veronica where it is made clear that Jessica is his girlfriend and Chad is her husband, Betty’s relationship with Glen hasn’t been defined clearly. To me it seems like they have a much more casual relationship more of a FWB kind of deal. The main reasons why I think this is because firstly Glen doesn’t know the name of Betty’s cat, she has to tell him. This seems small but I feel like if they were in an established relationship then he would know her cat’s name. We also know that he doesn’t have a key to her place so that is another milestone in a persons relationship that they haven’t reached so if they are in a relationship its likely a fairly new one. But the most significant thing to me that makes me think it isn’t an exclusive relationship is that when Glen asked Betty if she want’s to go back to his place and she says she has plans he looks a little put out like he’s worried/ thinks she might be going on a date with someone. Or at least thats how I read the scene when I first saw it. This implies that she is free to do so again reinforcing that idea that they aren’t exclusively dating each other and that they are free to see other people. If they are in a casual, non exclusive relationship then I see nothing wrong with Betty being intimate with Archie so long as she has made it clear to Glen that they are not exclusive. I think women get a bad reputation for having casual relationships which I think is a stigma that needs to end. Sleep with as many people as you like just do so safely and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Ok but what if I am wrong and Glen and Betty are boyfriend and girlfriend? Well thats where the difference between tv and real life comes in. If it were real life than obviously its completley unacceptable. However I also recognise that in TV cheating is often used to show that two characters have such strong feelings for each other that they can’t control themselves or contain those emotions. Its a plot device. Often you’ll get two characters who clearly have deep feelings for each other but are not together and are in fact in other relationships. To show how deep those feelings for each other are the characters will act out of character and cheat. Usually this happens multiple times and is always with each other. The best example I can think of is Leyton form OTH. Lucas cheats on Brooke multiple times with Peyton. He also cheats on Lindsey with Peyton. But he never cheats on either of them with anybody else, its only ever with Peyton. This is to show that cheating isn’t in his or Peytons character, they aren’t players or serial cheaters, its to show that their feelings for each other are so intense that it makes them act out of character and they end up cheating exclusively with each other. The same can be said for Barchie. Archie doesn’t cheat on Veronica with anyone but Betty and Betty never cheats on Jughead with anyone but Archie. Another common thing that this troupe entails is that when the couple are together they never cheat on each other. Leyton were always faithful to each other because now they dont ever get put in a position where they have to fight or hide their feelings. This troupe also serves as a cautionary tale. Leyton often tried to ignore and push down their feelings for each other and as a result they would bubble over from time to time causing them to cheat. Barchie are very much the same they ignore their feelings for each other instead of confronting and talking about them. I tend to think of Barchie as a fizzy drink bottle. The fizzy drink represents their feelings, but they’ve contained them in a bottle with a tightly screwed on lid. Every now and again something happens to shake the bottle up until the pressure inside gets so intense its ready to pop. Then the moment the lid loosens even a little its an explosion and they’ve got a huge mess on their hands.

Honestly I would prefer it to be the first scenario of Betty and Glen being more FWB than anything but if it does turn out Betty is cheating again then I don’t think it means Betty is this terrible, awful person who is irredeemable I think it just means she still has some more growing and learning to do and that she and Archie really need to talk about and confront the feelings they clearly have for each other. Like I said I am very excited for this episode more so than I have been in a long time for Riverdale. I also really hope that the shower scene is a real scene, I’ll admit that I’m a little worried that they will troll us by going the jughead nightmare route just because of how many times I’ve been let down in the past. But either way we are going to be getting plenty of Barchie content and I am planning on reblogging all of the gifs so you’ve be warned my blog is about to become a Barchie kingdom.

after listening to the hedwig and the angry inch riverdale version album for two weeks straight heres the ranking of the songs from worst to best

- wicked little town: sorry to the wickedheads i guess but this doesnt do much for me. somehow they all sound bad singing the beginning, even lili which is crazy

- random number generation: i like it! kinda boring so its not higher but i think the little choreo is fun i like the shirts i like them taking confetti out of their lockers. HEY HERE WE ARE lalalalalalalalalala. im taking points away for giving sweet pea such a high number tho wdym 35

-midnight radio: of course theres the iconic heres to ronnie and archie and betty and jughead but beyond that i think they sound very nice singing the chorus theres a v sweet scene with fangs reggie and sweet pea in the bar love it! tho why was kevin singing that i dont remember him being in the archies

- tear me down: i dont really like this song to be perfectly honest i feel casey cott was flexing his broadway training on us too much but i have to place it high for the second archie gay kiss. millions raised for the lgbt community

- sugar daddy: i know people were mad as hell for this one which makes me love it. i <3 my cringe queen cheryl<3333 the scene is very interesting from a narrative/meta perspective and the song is fr very good. also has mr honey saying hes gay + how queerphobic of you! this did a lot for us

- exquisite corpse: absolutely iconic "I GUESS DEATH JUST CHANGES A PERSON" and then just bursting into song riverdale at its finest ugh. mr sprouse is definitely the low point of this song but i love that archie and jughead are on the same side with betty and veronica opposite them a win for gay rights. their voices dont mix as well as in the origin of love but ill let it slide bc core four trans confirmed

- wig in a box: oh hell yeah baby you know casey cott was flexing his broadway training on us HARD but i dont mind it this time bc this scene is so good<3333 suddenly im miss midwest midnight checkout queen<33 not much to say on it its a very good song

- THEE origin of love: theres not a single thing about this song that i dont like i dont know how to convey to you how much i like it. everything about it is perfect i dont even want to listen to the original version bc i know they CLEARED those bitches like this is lili reinharts world we're just living in it. the fact that its the set up for a barchie kiss doesnt even dampen my enthusiasm its that good<3 most romantic song on earth i think we should make it the national anthem and im 100% serious.

Riverdale 4x17 - First thoughts

Pre-thoughts/expectations: Im very exicted for once. At first I was dreading this epiosde, because, you know, it’s a musical one, and you know how the last one went... (first thoughts on that here). But then they dropped all the Barchie stuff so now I’m PUMPED!

Warnings: Swearing and caps lock, also I didn’t edit any of this.

First thoughts:

Jughead: “It was over.” Me: Bughead?

I’m glad to see Jughead back writing in Pop’s tho

God another tape? I honestly completetly forgot about those

Oh no Jughead is singing again

It was god awful last time

I’ve only heard three words and it sounds like ha has inproved but I don’t wanna get my hopes up

Okay Cole’s singing is better (maybe that’s because he’s singing a low tone now though?) but I still think it’s a weird creative decision to have Jughead sing tbh. It just feels really weird and out of character. I know he’s not actually singing but still. I think the musical episodes would work better (or less bad) if he was the only one that didn’t sing.

Oh now Archie is singing that is so much better

And Veronica too

I don’t know which musical this is from but I promise I won’t judge it based in Riverdale’s interpertation

The people singing at Pop’s are really funny to me but I don’t know why

But also SWEET PEA YAY

Doing something like this, giving teenagers today a voice and trying to express how they feel is something I really wanna see more but it doesn’t work in Riverdale. Riverdale is so far removed from reality that doing these kind of realistic and relevant things and topics can’t work. If you’re gonna give generation Z a voice then you need to do it with people who behave like real gen Z teenagers, and the characters in Riverdale don’t. I don’t mean that all media have to be realistic, but if you’re gonna do something like this it kinda does.

The musical numbers aren’t as awkward as in Heathers. That just hurt to watch, but this is totally fine.

If no one had number 69 I’m sueing

The Archies? Does Archie have a secret twin too?? With the same name???

- I love Josie’s singing but why is she singing in an empty lounge? REST HER VOCALS.

- I used to love Hiram’s evil-ness but now he just shows up all the time and it’s getting annoying. What are your thoughts on S5 ?

I’d say some episodes were surprisingly really good, but then again in the bigger picture the season was I dont know, not too exciting

The hope for at least 1 season with different and new dynamics died quickly

Veronica should have stopped obsessing with her father 2 seasons ago. Why stretch it out like that, her character is more than just her feud with him

And that Chads character only existed to be a minor obstacle for varchie was clear since episode 1, and things that are too predictable arent well written

The story with the lonely highway is actually really chilly and good and much better than the eseason 3 & 4 mysteries

sadly Kevin is only irritated and confused all the time & Betty and Alice again have to go through bullshit trauma, give the coopers a break

I think it would have been interesting to see Jabitha and Barchie to be existent for more than 1 episode. But again, that would be interesting, so… not riverdale style

Only thing constantly good about this season is Cheryls storyline and Tonis plot, god bless them

Valerie Brown: Look That was a relationship. They dated. It was based on mutual interests and physical attraction. Obviously things happens. He tried to got back with her she didn’t want to and it wasn’t possible. Even if they dated it wasn’t long enough in my opinion for Archie to go full post break up mourning.

Veronica Lodge: I’m a varchie shipper. To be honest Archie loves Veronica , it’s not only based on physical attraction (yes they are way more touchy and physical than the majority). I always felt like when he met Veronica he fell in love with that girl who was witty (Not sure if it’s the right word tho (I warn you English isn’t my native language) who got the fire in her, she wasn’t like any other girls. She had character and was there for him. Remember when Fred was shot? That scene man when she siad "I’m not going anywhere." Man that’s my favorite Varchie scene. As for Veronica imagine being a rich girl from New York. Surrounded by socialites kids , rich and arrogants, your father who you always defended get arrested, you moving into a new town and you met that boy. He isn’t the smartest but he is kind and has a good heart. He is simple. He is the complete opposite of your shady ass father who you grew up with (Actually father-daughter relationships does affects the daughter’s view of men). Now the break up. Look it wasn’t because of she didn’t say "I love you." It meant for him that they weren’t on the same level in the relationship. Saying I love you is not a little thing. You confess your love to someone you confess something that you sure about. Saying I love you it’s a huge step. Can you imagine saying I love you to your Bf/Gf and they dont say it back. I’m glad they got together and I hope that the writers give them more depth.

Betty Cooper: Look I’m not a Barchie shipper (no disrespect to Barchie shippers) but their relationship was always one sided. I really didn’t get the "I might have feelings for Betty." Vibe. The kiss. First of all, Betty initiated it and Archie responded it. Both are guilty of kissing each other But THEY WERE SINGLE. That kiss was cussed by 1)Writting cuz they trynna make a BAV triangle hopefully they don’t 2)Pressure aand stress. Look people deal with stress with different ways. It was stressful. He was there reassuring her. A kiss it’s intimate ,it’s comforting and she needed confort and to be close to someone. As for Archie well tbh I can’t see the reasons why. Maybe the stress ,the tension , the proximity caused it.

In Season 1 Kevin said "Archie got hot." So form that line we can suppose that Archie wasn’t that hot prior the série. Imagine being an average looking guy who probably didn’t got that much attention. Then puberty hit you like a truck, now pretty girls thinks you’re cute. I think the problem is that Archie is too impulsive. He doesn’t think before he acts.Also a fuckboy isn’t a guy that get it with girls, it’s a guy that get it with girl and knows it and use it. A fuckboy is the one who will dates you and make you believe lies. Archie is impulsive, hormonal and kinda dumb sometimes but he’s not a fuckboy. That’s my opinion though.
