4. What is something about your writing style that you’re really proud of?

A lot of people have complimented me on my dialogue, so I'm gonna go with that. Just something about watching a back and forth between two people is so fun to do. Some of my favorite writing challenges was where I was restricted to only tell a story with the dialogue alone, and the dynamics you can get from that.

Some of my favorite dialogues:

12. Favorite ship you’ve written/the ship you write for the most?

Technically speaking, I don't write ship fic unless you count reader-inserts and OC inserts. If we count those, Mitsuhide banter is fun to write when I do him with reader-inserts (which bleeds into the way I write Nokto, since they do have a lot of similarities, it's just fun to write their teasing banter).

If we're talking about OC ships, then that goes to Mitsunari and Houki, whom are the most recent I've written about the most (two published fics and a wip wednesday, the two of them walking home together when I wrote her interacting with Ieyasu in a different fic, some stuff that I haven't posted yet, etc.)

If my cantankerous boss would have summoned me at 03:03 pm EEST (when your request landed in my inbox), just to tell me "Imma need an in-depth breakdown of the Greek trade unions' position on the current critical understaffing of the HoReCa sector", I would have politely answered "yes, ma'am, when is the deadline". I would have then turned on my heels, rolled my eyes, sworn like a drunk sailor under my breath (fuck my life comes to mind, pardon my French) and quickly be done with it.

That being said, since the question has been asked by several people in the comment threads of the day's posts, I am gonna give you my two cents on Queen Pufflander, even if you've been around before I even knew this weird place existed. And hopefully put to rest this nonsense forever (wishful thinking, doubt it will happen).

Once upon a time, when S&C's bantering was the plat du jour on Twitter and this fandom a considerably less toxic place, Puff the Magic Dragon of the US East Coast was one of the Queen Bees of Shipperville. Her blog was witty and no-nonsense (if a tad verbose) and, as *urv, she quickly earned her fair share of side performers: Stella and Deep Throat (SOURCES) or the tarot reader(s) immediately come to mind. People loved Puff and that is only fair, to be honest: I bet the farm she was great fun. Little by little, information traded in DMs started to pile up in her famed Vault, from which she was generously sharing, from time to time, sibylline rants ("maybe they did or maybe they didn't, but don't worry, something happened and all shall soon be revealed"). I can critique that forever and a day and tell you that all this sent people's expectations up the roof and beyond, of course. But, again: I was not here. It is unfairly easy to judge all these things with a historian's eye, and people who lived to tell the tale are far more entitled than me to comment their fandom experience, circa 2015.

When the whole Shatner/Watchtower baliverne started (early 2016, if memory serves) things ugly escalated and rather quickly so. People started jumping ship. With McSideburns already in the house (EIFF comes to mind and a certain poignant S&C penguin picture, too), enter Flukenzie Floozy. Thus, after IFH, Puffy decided to pack her crystal ball & tent and move to greener pastures on Wordpress. There, she held court with a keen eye for the Byzantine politicking of this fandom, not unlike what Perfidious Albion did with regard to the Thirteen Rebelling Colonies, after that Boston Tea Party. Her main moments of intersection with the rest of the shipper community are Covfefe Pics (of course) and Remarkable Week-end (of course). With regard to Covfefe, she quickly cried wolf, but by the time Remarkable Week-end happened, she pulled off a mighty witty breakdown of The Nuptial Charade of the Century. Blaze of glory was Quarantein Ha-wa-wee (of course), when she blamed S for all the world's evils and then some more. After that, she concentrated on her Neverending Feud with *urv (a Private Investigator was, at some point, hired and paid for via crowdfunding), which somehow managed to end (nevertheless) with a Report she might or might not have sent to S, "for further consideration".

As all good prophets, Puffy finally went into Occultation circa 2021, not without warning us that she was torn between Gay Sam & SamCait intellectual traditions, with a wee penchant for the first (reason why I completely ditched her peddling, because IYKYK).

I can understand why people might think I could be Puffy. I am, however, very sure about my own identity, whereabouts and creed: to state the opposite would really, really be mental. I fully assumed my responsibility and went ahead to actually prove you, this morning, I wasn't. Reading her rants was useful, but also taxing. I doubt Stella and Deep Throat were anything else but narrative helpers in a sophisticated Greimas actantial model. Something I would never do, for example: I am confident enough not to need any crutches. And I am very, very sorry for this word vomit: it should come, perhaps, as solace its length could never compete with Puff's storytelling marathons.

To wash my sins (not really: because I really love that picture), here's S,C, a penguin and a cakebox (?), at EIFF 2015. This is, you can be certain, the purest thing on this page, Anon:

Unpopular SMG opinions

Screw it, here are my unpopular SMG opinions :)

I hate that I have to say this but please do not attack me for any of these, they are just my personal opinions & thoughts

Warning: opinions different from most people's (also they're not in any particular order, I just kinda threw them together lol)

Man of Medan is my favorite DPA game and I will NOT change my mind, it deserves way more love and appreciation and respect. It genuinely has the best variability and replayability (maybe even more so than UD & maybe even TQ tbh)

House of Ashes is my least favorite SMG game and I struggle to understand why a game so problematic is so loved

I liked Little Hope's twist ending lol. I know it's controversial, but to me, it gave the game so much more emotional weight and I personally love things that make me sad lol, so I liked it. I also think it provides so many themes & motifs, some great symbolism, and really good messages

I'm a big Emily/Matt shipper. I know they have problems but I love both of them and they have so many cute moments in the bonus chapter especially and I just want them to go to couple's therapy to work on said issues bc I love them

I'm also a big Conrad/Fliss shipper. This ship isn't necessarily hated by popular opinion, but it is very overlooked. Once again, I just love them both and I think they could actually work post-game and I simply adore their dynamic

Matt is my favorite male character, Conrad is my second favorite male, and Jacob is my third favorite male. All 3 guys are criminally underrated (and overhated in Conrad's & Jacob's cases) and I love them all

Emily is my favorite female character, Fliss is my second favorite female, and Emma is my third favorite female. Emily & Emma are so unfairly hated- they deserve so much love & appreciation. Fliss, while pretty well-liked, is still much too underrated and also deserves more love & appreciation

I love Emily, Jessica, Ashley, Emma, Jacob, Ryan, Julia, Conrad, Taylor, Angela, Andrew, Rachel, Kate, & Mark. They all deserve love & appreciation and none of the hate that they've received (also I'm not sure if Jamie or Erin have gotten hate, but if they have, they're included too)

Josh & Jason are problematic jerks. I don't understand why they're so well-loved. They're both sexist and act so disrespectfully towards women, and Jason is also racist

I think Emma & Jacob could actually work tbh, they're both just in different places at the time of the game. But maybe a couple years in the future, I could see them both giving it a try and honestly I think they would actually be quite cute (BUT I will always ship Emma with Abi above all, sorry Jacob ily)

As much as I love canon gay/bi rep and I do think the flirting between Ryan & Dylan is cute... I don't think they're very compatible, sorry y'all :( Maybe I'll make a separate post about this sometime

Alex has his issues, yes, but he's really not that bad

I used to not like Nick F, but upon replaying TQ, he's also not that bad- I think he was just screwed over by the werewolf transformation tbh

Why you should vote for Seamonkeys

They actually genuinely have one of the most interesting dynamics, or at least my favorite. I'll be talking about things from the books here

Sun has taken off without his team to go to another kingdom not once, but twice (the first time was when he left early to go to the Vytal festival)

The other members of the team, Sage and Scarlet, are rightfully angry at him after the second time and try to separate themselves from him, but Neptune does NOT. This is even remarked upon a few times by other narrating characters such as Velvet.

It’s implied he is angry, though, he’s just not saying it because he wants to be around Sun again

Between the fact that he hides his "nerdier" interests, the whole thing with not being able to dance, and most importantly the fact that he avoids his semblance and is even afraid of it, it is easy to say that he is someone who has troubles expressing himself, to say the least

Therefore, his refusal to be outwardly angry at Sun to "keep things normal" could be seen as part of his problem expressing himself

In the flashback near the start of the book about the glowing golden tree, Sun is shown wanting him and his cousin to be able to find a place to stay, and then he sees the tree and thinks that it would be the perfect place to make a home. The memory of that tree is what he thinks of to center himself every time he uses his semblance. Therefore, Sun deep down wants to be able to find a place to call home. The fact that he's always moving from place to place means the he, also, is avoiding his real self. They're twinning ^_^

Then there’s this

This random, oddly cinematic shot that lasts like five seconds, that uses probably the most important bit of imagery in rwby(the sun and moon), which specifically has a romantic context in the show(bumbleby, ozpin and salem, and arkos). I wonder what that could mean.

Other things:

There's just like..... some kinda poetic things that happened in general. Like Sun leaving both times on a boat, which means Neptune wouldn't have been able to go with him even if he'd had the chance to.

Sun had black(/gray?) eyes in volumes 1-3, matching Blake, but from volume 4 onward he has blue eyes, which match Neptune. Neptune's goggles are yellow, matching Sun. And just like yellow and purple are opposites on a red/yellow/blue color wheel, yellow and blue are opposites on a red/green/blue color wheel.

Neptune's introduction includes Sun taking a long look at him from the legs up, after which he basically admits Neptune is good-looking (so he checked Neptune out)

Tbh, if Neptune was a girl it'd be pretty obvious the show was going in the direction of seamonkeys. It's that trope where the girl waits for the lead guy to stop chasing after the girl that isn't right for him and they get together at the end.

Look at how Neptune smiled when Sun said "it was never about that, brainiac"

Please just consider what volumes 4 and 5 would have been like from Neptune's perspective. Please.

Lastly, there's just the fact that like half their bits in rwby chibi have to do with making fun of how gay they act, and/or neptune specifically(things like him liking musicals, using moisturizing cream, etc)

ALL OF THIS IS TO SAY that Seamonkeys DEFINITELY deserves to win this round. They have at LEAST as much going for them as the other ship in the poll(name omitted to keep this out of their tag), they'll almost definitely be in volume 10, and also they are my special guys. So vote for them if you love me.

Valentine's Day OC Ship Gushing: Gay Dad Pirates

Still over the moon that y'all happened to prioritize Red Kraken stuff. Hope you all enjoyed the Dancefloor one as well, bcause I know I enjoyed writing it up!

Obligatory mention that the details of these two are still a work in progress. In fact, these two aren't nearly as developed as I'd like them to be, but I can give details as to why I like the ship (hehe....pirate ship)

So I realize in my last post I didn't really elaborate what The Red Kraken was ABOUT for those who wanted to know. So in short, the Red Kraken is a story about the eponymously named crew of pirates who want to explore the world. That opportunity is presented to them after a strange mystical wall of fog is lifted from half of the entire world. (Also, they may have been responsible for getting rid of the wall of fog, but that's another story). Samba and Tango are the two founding members of the crew.

(Also there hasn't been much art made that I know of, so you might have to use your imagination for some of these. Specifically for Tango, whose only visual reference was from when he was an NPC in a DnD podcast. Anyway, if you want me to give a detailed description, I'll do so later. Until then, Amanda DID make a Samba that I liked a good bit)

Samba, the captain, lived a relatively privileged and somewhat sheltered lifestyle, but always loved hearing the stories of treacherous pirates, specifically how they would sail the seas in hunt of great treasures. Also, he was a theater kid (which explains a lot of his personality moving forward). Eventually, he would go on to join the military, believing that the resources would allow him to see the world, and possibly expand the capabilities of his empire by discovering new lands and finding new treasures, hoping such an incentive would motivate the military to his side. He quickly found himself to be incorrect, since the military was far more interested in imposing their will upon those outside the empire rather than his adventurous flights of fancy.

[No art for Tango, but he's basically big and muscular, with short spiked black hair and olive colored skin. He has a beautiful tattoo of a shark on his left bicep, and he usually wears a red suit with red dresspants, although the sleeves of his suit are completely ripped off]

Tango, on the other hand, was born into almost the completely opposite circumstances. He was born into near poverty, with his parents dying at a fairly young age. He had joined a crew of pirates shortly afterwards, out of necessity rather than out of choice, feeling that at the very least, the crew would at the very least act as a sort of family. Something which he had yearned for. However, that quickly turned when a raid went awry, and the rest of his crew abandoned him to be captured and interrogated by the military. It took a long time for him to realize that they weren't coming back for him. Even so, he refused to give them any information.

And so these two meet. Samba realizing his dreams of joining the military weren't going to give him the life he had wanted to live, and Tango, having what he believed to be his family completely abandon him. Samba then gets a really stupid idea, and offers to start a new pirate crew with Tango. After stealing a ship and breaking Tango out of prison, the two of them officially form the Red Kraken.

But this is Valentine's Day, not Pirate Day, so we should talk about their relationship. Similarly to how Disco and Tap acted as a foil to one another, Samba and Tango are foils for one another, with their relationships helping to temper one another's extremes. Samba, meant to represent an idealism for what he imagines The Pirate's Life to be (as captain, he constantly speaks in a Pirate Voice, and when he loses both his arm and leg, he's partially excited since he'll be getting a pegleg), and Tango, who has experienced what the reality of a "pirate's life" would be: a group of criminals constantly fearing the law, ready to stab one another in the back at a moment's notice. I believe what drew them together was Samba's ridiculous optimism for keeping up an ideal that a pirate's crew is a family (an ideal he holds resolute, remaining faithful to every member of the crew no matter the cost), and Tango's ability to remain objective and realistic, helping to ground Samba.

They also very much rely on one another for leading the crew of the Red Kraken. While Tango is incredibly experienced, has a breadth of insider knowledge towards other pirate crews, and is incredibly skilled at thinking logically and accounting for details that many would miss, he isn't much for socializing, and finds himself at a terrible disadvantage when working alone, being more comfortable in using his skills in tandem with others. Meanwhile, Samba is INCREDIBLY charistmatic, with his aesthetic of being a pirate captain perfectly inspiring a crew, along with his optimism and drive pushing for the crew to do things no one else thought possible, he also constantly finds himself getting way too over his head, getting lost in his own fantasy.

Throughout their years upon years of falling in love with one another and seeing the beauty in what the other held, they've grown incredibly close as captain and first mate, finding the other the most valuable thing in their lives. Upon inadvertently adopting Waltz after saving her from a burning building, Tango found himself fulfilled in becoming a father, which he had always wished he could become, all while having a family surrounding him. And Samba manages to live out his wish of exploring a new world searching for untold treasures.

I'm really glad they get to do that together.

Fanfic Writer Questions

Alright so, @optiwashere tagged me in this question thingy, how fun! I was looking for an excuse to discuss this stuff. Oh, and I will be tagging @zawazawanightmares, @modusoperand1 and @trygrievousbutgirl-blog, though ya'll are under no obligation to participate if you don't want to.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Twelve, though that number is a bit misleading because one of those has 15 chapters and has been getting sporadic updates since December of last year.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

115,036. Which seems about right, I tend to get wordy.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I started with Baldur's Gate 3 but pretty quickly expanded to Chainsaw Man, which is mostly where I hang my hat these days. I'm also planning on writing for Kakegurui eventually, and maybe Dead by Daylight and Warhammer if the mood strikes me. Oh and I wrote one fic for Werewolf: The Apocalypse that wasn't very good, but I'm probably not returning to that universe anytime soon.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

In descending order: Stress Relief, In Lust and In Leaf (E-rated Karlach/Shadowheart/Tav feat. recreational drug use) Through You (E-rated Power/Kobeni, chapter-based longfic) A Matron's Mercy (E-rated Minthara/Tav with lots of gender affirmation) Underdark, Under Pressure (M-rated Shadowheart/Tav, the first fic I ever published!) Waning Moon, Not A Moment Too Soon (E-rated Shadowheart/Tav, ball-slapping sex in a broom closet)

5. Do you respond to comments?

All of them! Though it occasionally takes me a while because of things like time zones and me needing time to think of decent responses. I love getting comments!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't really do angsty endings, I keep that stuff to the beginning and middle when it comes up at all, but by default this one probably goes to Would You Still Love Me if I Was Several Worms? because the ending is only very hopeful that things will work out alright instead of outright confirming it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh, hm... It's kinda hard to rank them, but I guess probably Hearts of Fire and Darkness, Eye Enough for Both, though there's no fic of mind that'd refer to as having an "unhappy" ending per se.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nope! Not yet at least. I'm sure there's at least one person out there who hates my guts and thinks my work is trash, but so far they've been cordial enough to keep it to themselves.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yup! I like to think of it as pretty character driven, I always try to keep track of the characters' emotions and mental state during the intense gay sex.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

None yet, but I definitely want to write one for BG3 and Chainsaw Man eventually (as in, some time before the heat death of the universe). Both fandoms have a basically immortal lesbian and they deserve to meet eachother.

Again, not to my knowledge.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I've definitely had writer friends of mine look over sections of fics I'm working on to provide feedback and criticism, but nothing quite so involved.

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

This is going to sound so stupid, but it's actually an OC x OC ship. See, once upon a time I joined a Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition roleplay server on discord. I played a terrifying, gay monster woman with way too much shit on her shoulders, and she ended up becoming the girlfriend of a blood-curdling, bisexual monster woman with a machete and a vicious streak. The scenes we wrote together there were beautiful and romantic and did wonders for my mental health. I am never going to forget those characters. Valerie and Jelena forever.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I wanted to write a novel that was basically just me throwing a bunch of mine and my friends' OCs into an angsty high school AU. It was going to be an attempt at a complex exploration of queerness, mental health and being born into a privileged but deeply abusive household. I gave up after chapter 2 because barely any of the people I showed it to for feedback got back to me, and I got demoralised. Now I write fanfiction and get feedback all the time.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Apparently, transfem rep and hurt/comfort. Which I guess I can kinda see, I'm good at hurting characters but I can never stand to see them in pain for long, hence copious amounts of comfort to compensate.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm bad at writing male characters and just flat out can't write hetero romance. Also, I'm slow as fuck.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I just don't do it, unless using Japanese honorifics when writing in English counts. If I need to have a character speak in Russian or Infernal or whatever, I just write "they said in X language" or something like that.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Technically there's a very shitty, unfinished, first-draft, collaborative Hotline Miami fic sitting somewhere in my google docs that's probably the first if I were to check the dates. It's never going to get published or finished, but one OC I made up for it still keeps cropping up in the stories I come up with in my mind, and if I ever go professional they'll see the light of day eventually.

Oh yes, please explain the Flamewar thing if thats okay?? 😭

Okay, so once upon a time there was a Transformers fan named Raksha. A grown woman in her late 20s that loved G1 Transformers and the Decepticons. She loved them so much that she wrote multiple spanning essays about how the Autobots were evil oppressors that were trying to drive them to extinction and that the Deceptions were “innocent, noble creatures” that were just trying to survive this horrible onslaught on their lives.

Keep in mind this was the early 1990s. We didn’t have Transformers IDW1 phase 2 or Shattered Glass or Animated or the Aligned continuity yet. We only had the Marvel US and UK comics, the cartoon, a few picture books and tapes, the fan-subbed and terribly English dubbed Japanese cartoons, and untranslated manga.

There’s a couple bits and pieces here that humanize the cons in the same way the bots were in the show, but nothing implying they were secretly “noble” unless you counted the untranslated Victory manga showing Esmeral, Lyzack, and the Baby Dinoforce. Again, it was the early 1990s. I highly doubt the internet was that capable of hosting scans of books, let alone translations of scans of books. All of this was pulled out of her headcanons, basically.

And no headcanon was greater than the headcanon that Nightbird was sapient.

Nightbird was the first ever female robot Transformer, something that no doubt embittered Raksha to the more popular and more noteworthy Arcee when she fell by the wayside. Raksha had plans for Nightbird, and the unassuming little ninja robot would be the centerpiece of what she insisted was the true story of “Enter The Nightbird.”

You see, in Raksha’s eyes, Nightbird was fully sapient. Whether it was from her creation or from the kindly Decepticons modifying her, it didn’t matter. Nightbird had a mind, a brain, a heart, and she could use them to great effect. Megatron fell deeply in love with her beauty and desired to make her his mate by sending her to sabotage their evil oppressors, the Autobots. The Autobots were in the wrong for trying to bring back Nightbird, as this would be forcing her into a life of slavery, and they cared not for her emotions. Noble Starscream shot her to save her from this horrible life and keep her from being used for selfish human whims, feigning jealousy to trick the Autobots. But before she was sealed away, Nightbird reawoke, full conscious once again in silent defiance of her captors…

Or that’s how the story went for her. Yeah, she really got mad at people that didn’t ship Megatron and Nightbird, or worse, thought Megatron was gay.

That wasn’t the only thing she had to pitch a fit about. She fucking loathed Beast Wars with a fiery passion and likewise spent thousands of words of critique (read: spitting and screeching that it wasn’t G1) towards the show. I’ve heard secondhand stories that she apparently went out of her way to harass the Beast Wars voice actors that showed up at Transformers conventions due to her hatred of the series, but I can’t verify these claims; after all, these events took place nearly 3 decades ago and I heavily doubt someone had a camcorder or a voice recorder on hand to get juicy deets of fandom drama. The closest thing I could find was David Kaye offhandedly mentioning overhearing about how much she hated the show.

So the fandom and many writers at Hasbro were not fans of her for these reasons. The Beast Wars writers joked about naming blank protoforms “Rok-Shaans” but dropped it because they thought it was punching down. 3H, the first indie comic to gain the TF license, made a fan-script for an episode where Beast Wars Megatron said Raksha was his greatest foe. All good-natured ribbing at someone who was being disproportionately rude about something they didn’t like.

But noted production consultant Ben Yee went higher. He created the character of Flamewar, a villainous female Cybertronian who still identified as a Decepticon despite the Predacons having long since taken over. She was completely obsessed with Megatron to the point of impersonating him after his demise, and when she couldn’t find any other bots to cling to, she hitched her cart to whatever side thought would get her ahead. But it’s totally not Raksha! We promise!

TL; DR A woman that’s probably nearing 60 right now has the dubious legacy of a character based on the nasty, rotten things she said to other people because she was mad they didn’t think Megatron was an innocent cupcake that just wanted a hot ninja girlfriend. She’s also probably the driving force behind Nightbird getting a bunch of toys and her appearance in Rise of the Beasts.

What a fucking tale, for better or for worse.

Kinda wonder if Monty had planned this (seems like he did not gonna lie) but there was time for black sun to have it, but ultimately CRWBY kicked in their teeth. Here's my message to Blacksun or anyone who’s not happy about BB. This is RWBY, a show that while at its core is a fight anime about 4 girls, in a wacky world of monsters and God’s, finding themselves and their friends in the midst of it all, it always had a second message… Be yourself. Wiess tries to become her own person rather than the rich heiress. Ruby tries to be a huntress and later a leader and later still whatever this is. Blake and faunus are an analog for minorities and fitting in. Yang is the “just being physically strong doesn't mean you're good mentally”. This show is about change, finding your place and I don't think that having a Gay ship means any less. In fact it seems fitting. And regardless of all the other gay media you may point to and tell me that RWBY shouldn't have to conform to it, i'd like to point out this show is a decade old (ish)! This ship was there from day 1, and now it's over, its cannon and that's it.

For my fellow Bee’s, it's done, we can have our few weeks (heck the whole rest of the volume) but we have won. The signs were always there, it is now our job to become the defenders, we must gather our memes, our evidence, our mighty clips; and we must, it is our destiny to use them to back up CRWBY, to defend, not our opinions in hate filled fury, but the Show we love with dignity and respect, we need to tone it down once our victory lap is done and keep a level head as we show the world all the hints and love filled moments that led up to, what i hope is one of many Bee Kisses.

I have so many thoughts about Evan’s recent comments on GOTF and idk if this is gonna come out in a coherent way but I wanna just ramble and get them out so... here we go.

Evan’s strategy when it comes to both Sonic and Tikal’s relationship, as well as Sonic and Shadow’s, appears to be through subtlety and small moments, and it makes sense, the comic has a huge plot going on that it needs to keep its focus on. So looking back, you can see those small moments and realize the undertones of them, it’s a very smart decision on Evan’s part to handle things this way. It shows the greater bond that lies within these three characters of her story.

Touching a bit more upon the subject on how she’s handled and described her intentions on Sonic and Shadow, that additional tweet made me think a lot, and how she pointed out the contrast between her take on Sonic/Shadow’s dynamic vs other romantic works of the two. Evan described the usual shipping dynamic as a “dark and passionate tone” while her’s leans into a more “trust and mutually healing” one, and I think that’s a really good take for her to have and execute. It’s also kind of a commentary on how the dynamic of sonadow has changed throughout the years.

Speaking just generally, not just GOTF, Sonic and Shadow as a relationship, in fandom, has had its ups and downs. The ship during the mid to late 2000’s, and I think many of us who have been Sonic fans for years can all agree with this, was filled to the brim with homophobic treatment, weird fetishization, and some times the ship was portrayed as just downright abusive. That was the heavily normalized version of Sonadow during this time, it was a joke ship, people laughed at you for genuinely feeling a relationship between Sonic and Shadow could actually work. If you weren’t being lowkey homophobic about it, fetishizing the gay ship, or having sonic and shadow abusing each other, you were made fun of.

But the times have changed. The internet and people have grown. A relationship between two males, whether hedgehogs or humans, is something that a vast majority of people support and would love to see be happy and healthy. You can see many Sonadow shippers nowadays being able to share the genuine ideas they have on how they feel a good version of Sonic and Shadow would work. They’re able to explore and create so many wonderful works of the two and not have that worry about being made fun by a majority of the sonic fan base anymore. This change has allowed us to see what a healthy relationship between Sonic and Shadow would look like and so many people just make it so damn wholesome.

And I think that’s also something worth talking about. The absence of portraying happy and healthy couples in media nowadays. Just like how Sonadow was normalized as a toxic ship back in the 2000s, relationships in stories, movies, and shows are still constantly portrayed as toxic and abusive and it’s normalized. The idea of not being able to trust your partner, constant fighting over nothing, gaslighting and manipulative behavior, is so heavily normalized in media and it’s gotta stop. Relationships that are co-dependent, that have one partner questioning their trust in their lover constantly, that have one partner not being able to speak up, that have both people yelling at each other over small things, that have unhealthy jealousy, that have one partner who promises to change and then constantly relapses into their bad behavior because they know their partner will stay, all of that, it’s not good.

No relationship should ever be that way, and it is frustrating seeing so many things in media portray relationships that lack basic trust and respect as healthy and functional, when all they are are unhealthy and dysfunctional, which again is not good and should not be normalized. This can also apply to unhealthy friendships as well.

So to see that Evan, a member of the Sonic community and a worker for SEGA, taking a ship/dynamic that was once portrayed as something negative, and transforming it into one that is filled with mutual trust, understanding, and the want for both parties to heal properly, it’s incredibly inspiring and heartwarming. You can see that throughout the issues that Sonic and Shadow do greatly care for each other, their friendship is healthy, they want each other to improve and grow, they push each other, and they truly do love each other, platonically or romantically, it doesn’t matter, they just do and it shows.

Those are the relationships that matter.

May 2021 Wk 3

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

It’s a cray cray Friday when Vietnam gets its eng subs up before GMMTV Thailand. What alter-reality are we in? Well, the Vietnamese offerings are better right now anyway. (Oooo, feel that burn.) 

Ongoing Series - Thai

Top Secret Together Ep 2 - pulping it up in the best possible way. Sure sound and production values are pants, and in classic Thai fashion the editing in post is exacerbating (rather than fixing) pacing issues, but it’s still CUTE AF. I don’t even mind the added university storyline, because they’ve got good chemistry (and a confident gay fresher after a panicked gay hazer is an old favorite... what can I say, SOTUS was my first love). We aren’t spending too much time with any one couple, so it’s weighted a lot better than Brothers was, but also character development is slow. 

Siew Sum Noi Ep 2 - Unfortunately, it’s just too hard to find, plus no subs. I’m dropping it in the hopes it comes back on my radar some day. 

Y-Destiny Ep 8 - (Thurs) It’s rough having a ghost boyfriend, half your friends are scared, the other half think you’re crazy, and kissing shortens your lifespan. This was a cute couple even if I wasn’t wild about the surrounding story. 

Close Friend Ep 5: (Dear My Star/JimmyTommy) - about high school penpals. It had to rely entirely on voice over work as the actors only meet face to face at the end. It’s a good thing they are appealing screen presences on their own, with good vocal control. It’s hard to imagine any other BL pair carrying this kinda plot. It’s by far my favorite of the series so far, and I’m not even a big JimmyTommy fan. 

Fish Upon The Sky Ep 7 - no subs. Do we care? Not really. Because we have... 

Nitiman Ep 3 - currently my favorite out of Thailand. It’s the university Thai BL i’ve been waiting for since... when was the last good one? My Engineer? Yowza. Anyway we got: head on my shoulder, baby is a floppy drunk (but still wants to be in control), proximity alert, boyfriend’s closet, seme gets seriously jelly, and a cute twist on feeding him. There’s something fun and complex about Jin’s character. He’s not a panicked bi. He knows exactly what’s going on, he just hasn’t decided if he wants Bb or not. He clearly enjoys being looked after, the compliments, and the attention, but he’s not sure if he’s going to like what happens if he gives in. I like that twist on the usual tsundere uke archetype a lot, cautious rather than willfully obtuse or freaked out. We can see Jin realizing in stages: I like this person, I like that they like me, I like the romantic attentiveness. But in the background is... do I actually want to f*k him? It’s a dynamic we don’t often see on BL. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 10 fin - the most ridiculous show using BLs worst tropes in a sort of weird smoothie of bitter greens and too ripe banana. The ending was the sappiest cheesiest thing ever, like cheese syrup tapped from the cheese tree. So of course I loved it, but I’m pretty sure I giggled through all the bits meant to be profound. Because, in the end, to tolerate this show at all, you just can’t take ANY of it seriously. RECOMMENDED (with some SERIOUS reservations and trigger warnings.) Full review here. 

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan) Ep 1-2 - I don’t mind a damaged seme character but this one is a bit weird for me. Like creepy Cheese in the Trap level weird. On the bright side, the story has given our tsundere uke good motivation for his angst and great existing friendships, loyalty, and likability. Plus I’m invested in the cafe owner/innocent puppy side dishes. So if it’s only the seme character I’m not jiving with, and he’s the most established actor, it should all turn out fine. I believe in you, Taiwanese BL. 

Papa & Daddy (Taiwan) Ep 6 fin - speaking of belief. This such a good show but they gave us a cliffhanger ending. Now we must hope against hope for season two. That’s never guaranteed with Taiwan tho. So, I’m docking a few points and saying, RECOMMENDED so long as you realize it’s a cliffhanger. 

Love is Science? (Taiwan) Ep 1-9 (BL subplot) - this is a good het romance, but the fact that the BL subplot is a beautifully acted disaster bi + confident gay means you’re hearing about it whether you want to or not. Plus they just added in some GL! Come on! I gotta support Taiwan normalizing queer to this extent. They are fighting the good fight and if I also have to watch a career lady and her much younger softest straight boi get it on, too? Twist my arm with that service sub subtext. Go on Taiwan, TWIST IT. It’s on Viki. Join the revolution.   * Incidentally if you actually like the D/s het dynamic of this show, I highly recommend Japanese Kimi wa Petto - career woman keeps a hot young dancer boy as a pet. Oh yes, an actual pet, that IS the pitch. Never doubt Japan when kink is on the line. It’s also on Viki. Go get your kink on, thank me later. (If it helps: That was not a request.)  

Most Peaceful Place 2 (Vietnam) Ep 2 (AKA 5) - love triangles aren’t my thing, but if you’re gonna do it short form, by all means bring in the lead’s other BL pairing so the chemistry is on point. Now I've no idea who I want him to end up with. Can’t they just be in a poly triad? 

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 7 - I’m still enjoying it a lot. It’s still unabashedly queer and the tension is ramping up. We now have secret identity, blackmail, femme fatale, faen fatale, and incoming seme confrontation. Best of all, the series is still airing, which makes it longer than any other Vietnamese BL I’ve seen (aside from Tein Bromance - which is just too weird to count).

SEVEN PROJECT TEASERS

No one is entirely sure what Studio Wabi Sabi’s Seven Project/7Project will entail. 

It might be like Close Friend (1 episode per couple, no linking), 

or Y-Destiny (2 episodes per couple, loosely linked), 

or The En of Love (4 episodes per couple, linked but independent consecutive stories). 

They’re giving the couple’s arcs separate titles. So each one would be what? Seven Project: Once Upon a Time or the like? We’re in Taiwanese title territory people and NO ONE WANTS TO GO THERE. Anygay... 

Once Upon a Time is the BounPrem (og UWMA) anchor story, and seems to be the most dramatic and likely saddest. These two can handle most of what’s thrown at them at this juncture, so it should be good. 

Vs Love is a BoomPeak (og Make it Right) university vehicle. Since I thought Boom was done with our nonsense, I couldn’t be more thrilled and surprised this pair is doing another show together. I don’t think either of them are the greatest actors but I find Peak very endearing and Boom charismatic on screen, so I’ll watch. 

Would You be My Love is the hotly anticipated SantaEarth launch. They’re a (cultivated) IRL ship and Earth is an established BL actor. They have great chemistry and high energy so this could be lots of fun. 

We are also getting a GL from this series from established BL actresses Samantha and Pineare. Nothing teased yet on that, but I’m looking forward to this installment the most. Also curious to see how the ladies handle the branding and promo side, not to mention the culture. (Thailand variety shows gonna force *girls* to play the Pepero game?) 

Secret Crush on You upcoming Thai BL with no release date, co-produced by and featuring (but NOT staring) Saint and directed by Cheewin (sigh) with all fresh faces. (Previously known as Stalker the series.) It looks like pure pulp and I’m not wild about the plot but could be better than expected as it’s adapted from a novel. Cheewin is an okay director when he has an actual story to follow. 

Don’t Say No the series. Coming from the producers of TharnType this is the JaFirst vehicle many have been waiting for. Friends to lovers + a good boy/bad boy pairing on a sports romance foundation. It’s basketball so they tapped Meen as well (he’s semi-pro). The bad news? You get one guess as to who is writing the darn thing? Yep it’s MAME. So, ya know, expect some slam dunk kidnapping, a light dribbling of rape, and me turning into a basketcase. AKA... 

Will I have to live blog this series in order to survive it? That seems to be the only way I can. So probably. Which means the bad sports puns will continue. Look, if I’m suffering, SO ARE YOU! 

Rumors of a new YinWar vehicle The Best Story (mini series) coming in July. Also rumors that their previously announced Love Mechanics (full length series) has either been delayed, is facing money issues, or is moving studios, or all three. 

Breaking News 

DELAYED (I’m talking these three off the watch list until we get new airing dates) 

Love Area’s release was pushed out but it got a trailer. 

Golden Blood was supposed to drop Weds but comments in MDL report that it is delayed due to C19.  

Love’s Outlet (Taiwan) is supposed to have started a 50 episode run (only 3-5 min each, what utter nonsense). Sadly, this delay is due to a surge in cases in Taiwan which was doing so well, but also doesn’t have many inoculations. 

Bad Buddy has started workshopping at GMMTV actual. 

Kang Insoo’s BTS for Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding is SO FLIPPING CUTE. You have to watch it. Trust me, I don’t rec behind the scenes stuff often.

The Star That Fell to Earth

Once upon a time, a star falls to earth.

Her blazing tail streaks across the horizon with every eye in every kingdom following. She crashes against the peak of Mount Talon in a shimmery burst that shakes the earth and burns the sky. The King of the North sends horsemen with nets and spears. The Queen of the Mountains sends soldiers with guns and shackles.

A star can grant a wish that bends the laws of space and time you see, and wishes are the stuff of miracles.

However, there is a knight chosen out of each generation to scour the earth and secure the safety of each star. The Hawk Knight Hana arrives where the sky is burnt orange and the world is smoking and ringing with the sound of crashed space objects.

She races the war horses up the mountain, and beats the dogs to the top. She lifts her shield against the arrows and slides into the enormous smoking hole. She bends down to where the star is curled on the ugly barren ground and puts a hand out.

“My lady,” she bows. “Come with me.”

The Hawk Knight steals away the star into the night, and away from the greedy hands of people who would use her. They run until the soldiers cries die out and only the hoots of owls are left.

The star breathlessly turns to her with piercing eyes that glow and says: “You have saved me.” She can barely stand as she is carried down the mountainside. “I will grant you one wish.”

A shooting star is nothing if not good for her word.

The knight replies simply, “Not yet, my lady.”

The Hawk Knight defends the star as they cross the great plains and battle the ancient serpents hidden beneath the grasses. She cuts off the head of beasts with teeth as long as forearms and helps the star back to her feet each time she falls. She can barely hover at that point much less soar.

Again, as they rest on the plains and watch the darkening sky above, the stars says, “I feel ashamed. You have done everything for me and I have done nothing for you. Let me grant you one wish.”

“Not yet, my lady.” The knight murmurs and points above, “but you may repay me by telling me stories of the constellations. Stories of your people.”

So the star begins her tales of frigid asteroids and planets where it rains metal and volcanoes that erupt snow instead of lava. And the knight watches her every movement and how she blazes against the darkness.

They keep on the move.

The knight brings the lady to the pirate ships of the eastern shores. They sail across the kraken straits and sing drinking tunes among the pirate queen’s crew. They battle against the blistering rain that would drown the star herself and throw rocks at enormous eagles that would carry them off. The star manages to hover this time, and a throw a rock of her own.

Again, one evening as the star is humming to herself and resting against the side of the Hawk Knight Hana, she turns and whispers. “I have seen this world now. I have seen the terrors and beauty of it,” she touches the knight's scarred cheek. “Let me grant you a wish and take away your worries.”

“Not yet,” the knight covers the star’s hand with her own, “My lady.”

The Mountain Queen’s men arrive as the pirate crew is in the harbor. They send fiery arrows to burn the sails and canons to blast the ship to pieces. The Hawk Knight is clever though and tosses all their gold into the waters. “Mermaids!” She cries, “Take this offering and ferry us to safety.”

The Hawk Knight holds the star just above the waves so that her light remains lit and the mermaids ferry them to the closest continent. It is a midnight land of caves and secrets, and the men are still chasing the star.

The knight and the lady are forced into the dark caves and damp earth. They travel for days on end through cities built underground and twisting roads made of limestone and ash. They pass places where the bats are as big as men. They fight the necromantic skeletons that dwell in the abandoned citadels below. They dig their way through soil and mud and endless gloom.

The soldiers are ruthless, they give chase through the winding caverns, yelling, using sightless bloodhounds, and trying to smoke them out. They send one bullet after the next, and the knight parries and dodges and bares her teeth. On the tenth day they emerge into the salty air and can see the sky again. But they are not alone. The chase has pushed them to the end of all things.

On the cliffs that overlook the glass ocean they are trapped. Their backs to the rocks and bodies aching and dirty. The soldiers hold wicked swords, cocked rifles, and beasts on chain leashes.

Finally, the star spreads her arms, steadies her breathing, and steps backward. She does not fall. She takes the knight in her arms and lifts them both off the earth and into the heavens. Their bodies soar through the air faster than the bullets can fly and away from the shrieking voices of the soldiers.

When they land once more the knight is smiling, but her eyes are wet. “You remembered how to fly.” She says hoarsely. “You know how to return to your home.”

The star shakes her head and takes the knight’s face in her hands. “You have not made your wish yet.”

The Knight bows her head. She pulls the star close and whispers into her hair, “I cannot ask it of you.” She brings the lady’s hand up and kisses her palm. “It’s what I have wished since the moment I saw you and before. The reason I fear I was born.”

“And why were you born dear knight?” The star leans into her. The knight simply kisses her palm in answer.

“I cannot ask it of you . . .” She repeats and turns away.

“Ask it anyway,” the stars eyes are wet now too. She brings the knight’s face back to hers. “Ask it again and again.”

The knight searches her ageless, lovely eyes and sees only light. Their lips come together with the slow push of galaxies into orbit. She murmurs the words into the star’s warm skin. “Stay.” She wishes, and then wishes again and again with each kiss. “Stay with me.”

That is how a star fell to earth, and did not fall back up again.

7. What dance moves do they break out on the dance-floor together?

FUCK the way i was literally already attempting to find a video of what i want to describe on youtube before receiving this ask aslkfjks.

Basically if. If you, uh. Say you take a shimmy [x]. And you take a shuffle [x]. And you take a lil bit of flamenco [x]. And you take contemporary Polynesian [x]. And you, uh. You somehow put them all together. And then you make the dancers not really that good but also very comfortable and familiar with their own and each other's bodies so... still kind of good. There you have Ed and Stede dancing together.

Also Stede does teach Ed the waltz [x] and the gavotte [x], and then together they put a real pirate stank on 'em. And an honorable mention to this specific choreography to the Wellerman sea shanty (I was LOOKING for how actual pirates danced but apparently that content is not accessible on youtube fuck me).

Stede actually really hated dancing before trying it with Ed. It's so stuffy and it's always been a performance, particularly of class and gender roles, with a highly judgemental audience... But with Ed, and on the ship, they are just moving their bodies to music (often their own so-so singing), getting to know each other better physically without actually having to perform anything for anyone, there are quite literally NO rules, and even when they dance in front of the rest of the crew whatever the fuck they do is celebrated and imitated and adapted (and it's gay). Pirate ship dance, club dance, street dance... Fruit, fruit, fruit...

15. Who would try to do something artsy for their partner and just before they were going to throw it out because they thought it sucked, their partner comes in and loves the art piece?

Oh, it would obviously be Ed!! He hears about how the lighthouse painting was done by Stede's wife and gets it in his head that's what Stede likes to receive, and that he therefore MUST handmake something pretty and with no practical use for him or else he is simply not romancing him Right.

Of course even on a ship co-captained by Stede Bonnet, art supplies are few and far between on the high seas. So Ed can't very well do a painting, not unless he wants to waste food and probably not even get any good colors out of it anyway. And he can't write him a book, for obvious reasons (he's willing to have Lucius involved in This Whole Thing to a certain extent and no farther).

For a good long while, Ed simply collects pretty little materials when he comes upon them, with no particular plan for what he'll make with them. He's got seashells, coins, bootied jewels, and the like. Eventually he's looking at all this stuff and it's all pretty tiny, and he decides he'll make charms out of them and put them all on a necklace. He buys a nice silver chain, and some cashmere cord in that pretty teal Stede wears a lot, and he carefully chips holes in each little trinket to string them on. It takes a long ass fucking time, and it's tedious, but in a way that Ed likes. He has to be so carefully putting a hole in these delicate little things without cracking them that he can't think about anything else when he's at it. It's quiet, and he's alone, and he's utterly focused and unbeset-upon for fucking once.

But, when the necklace is finished... Well, the whole is not as pretty as its parts were individually. Ed is sure he's ruined them all and he'll have to start up his collection all over again and come up with something else entirely. But he fucking gives the thing to Stede anyway, because it's been so long, and he has to give him something for fuck's sake. He has to show that he's trying, here.

And Stede loves it. It's a perfect marriage between his two selves - gentleman and pirate. He gets a little teary about it, and Ed at first thinks he's fucked up so badly as to make Stede cry, but he can't labor under that impression for long because Stede simply won't shut up about how perfect a gift it is and how much he loves it and how well Ed truly knows him and how thoughtful he is and-

He puts it on right away - Ed jumping into action to fasten it for him, because that's part of it right? He saw it like that in a play he'd snuck into once. The charms lay in all different directions because of their disparate shapes, and they're not evenly spaced on the chain, and the cord is frayed in places from being stuffed through the links, and all that. And it's not that Stede doesn't notice these things, but there's something special about how Ed made this finicky thing with his big sea-roughened hands that makes its flaws features.

Stede never takes the necklace off again (unless the two of them decide to do a full kit swap again lmao). It makes a lot of noise under his shirts, and Ed can never contain the smile that creeps up on his face whenever he hears it. It's like his attempt to romance Stede got turned back around on him (but then - that's how all Stede's attempts to romance Ed go for him too).
