OH okay so

Scarlet/Brawnz is a side affect of an AU of mine where Brawnz lived instead of Nolan.

I think he would’ve fit into the narrative of Before the Dawn even better than Nolan. The book has a lot of themes about leadership, specifically what a good leader looks like, or what failure as a leader looks like. Brawnz being the only person on his team to survive would fit this. Is he a bad leader for getting his team killed? Or is he still a good leader?

BRNZ was also the other Shade team at the Vytal festival other than NDGO. NDGO all survived because they ran, and BRNZ died because they stayed and fought. I always thought it was a bit of a plot hole that NDGO ran, but then was hard on the other Beacon survivors for “abandoning” the school (including Nolan?), so in my AU they’re more projecting their own survivor’s guilt onto the BRNZ survivor, who is already struggling with it. Staying and fighting vs running during massive attacks is also a thing in the books (with neither being wrong), because clans who live out in the desert have to move after Grimm attacks/to avoid Grimm attacks all the time, but many people in the city of Vacuo would die to protect it.

Brawnz would be a great foil for Nebula because they’re both leaders of teams from Shade who reacted in opposite ways to the fall of Beacon and their teams met different fates because of it. When Velvet accuses her of thinking she’s better than everyone else, and Nebula says that she is better and that she left Beacon because it was a “lost cause,” she could instead say that she’s a responsible leader because she kept her team safe. Also, Nebula and Brawnz both have purple as their primary color.

We got to see a bit Brawnz’s personality during the tournament, and I like to imagine how it would mesh with Scarlet’s. Also, all of the above stuff would be more reason for Scarlet to notice and like Brawnz, because Scarlet has a lot of strong opinions on his own leader, and mentally praises other leaders like Arslan in comparison. Sun left his team after the fall of Beacon, but Brawnz was so committed to his duties as a huntsman and had enough faith in his team that he fought to protect a school and city that wasn’t even his own. Which is especially significant when you take into account that Vacuans tend to have a level of wariness towards other kingdoms, even Vale. He also just seemed to be a good leader in general, he was confident and the body language of his team during their fight with JNPR says they all like and respect him, and look to him for what to do in situations. That confidence shattering after Beacon would make for a very interesting character.

Also. I just like his design.

If you remember when volume 8 was airing and we all thought that Mercury was gonna see a kid getting the living daylights beat out of him by a grown man and make some Hard Re-evaluations of his life choices (because that’s exactly what his childhood looked like) and bust Oscar out of whale prison without any sort of planning ahead or particular intention to join the good guys, and also probably get his hands on the caduceus staff to pay homage to his Mercury/Hermes allusion, make some noise
