The Suicide of Amber Peat

Amber Peat was a 13-year-old British schoolgirl, her teachers described her as ‘lovely’ and ‘bubbly.’

Amber and her family had recently moved to Mansfield from Derbyshire, her teachers described the move as unusually quick and stated Amber and her sibling had left their previous school ‘abruptly.’ The headteacher said she often had to wait at the school for Amber and her sibling to be collected at the end of the school day.

Amber’s GP had raised concerns about her behaviour, Amber had run away from home before and was falling behind at school, for one school assignment Amber had claimed she had ‘nothing happy to write about.’ Amber had also run away from home and gone to school at 9pm on 3rd April 2014, when her mother and stepfather had been called to collect her they had said they were unable, and a teacher had driven Amber home. Amber also told teachers she was punished a lot at home. Two months before she died, Amber had arrived at school crying and saying she had been woken up to do chores at 11.30pm and not allowed to sleep until 1.30am. Another time, Amber had come to school wearing baggy jogging bottoms instead of her school trousers which she said was a punishment by her stepfather for forgetting to wash her uniform, her teachers stated she had been embarrassed and humiliated by this. Teachers described Amber as ‘always hungry,’ and noticed she had lost a lot of weight in the few months she had been at her new school. A referral to social services was rejected.

On the evening of 30th May 2015, Amber ran out of her family home following an argument, she was last seen in a wooded area with dense undergrowth near her home. Amber’s mother and stepfather did not report her missing for eight hours and in that time went grocery shopping, had dinner, and went to get their car washed. They later claimed they did not call the police as they believed Amber was ‘attention seeking.’

Three days after Amber had gone missing, her body was found, she had died from suicide by hanging.

A coroner concluded agencies had missed 11 opportunities in which they could have prevented Amber’s death. The family frequently moving house had led to a lack of communication between agencies. No formal charges were ever made regarding Amber’s treatment at home.

I had only drawn Gorseclaw and Ripplestar before, and I'm about to do a redesign of Larkstripe so that she has the "hearts" motif that her son gets. I did a bunch of sketches just to try and figure stuff out so, messy post

RIPPLESTAR

I've actually drawn Ripplestar a lot in the margins of my notes and such, so this design's pretty solid.

I change the side the hearts are on, plus the number of hearts, literally every single time I've ever drawn him lmao. It dozen madder.

What DOES matter though is that there's a HEART over his BRIGHTER eye. I use it as a bit of a visual metaphor, if he's trying to size you up or negotiate with you, he keeps you in the bright eye. When he trusts you or becomes comfortable with you in some way, he turns the brown eye on you.

So in most scenes where he's not talking to family I imagine he's not fully looking at his conversational partner. Especially on the Highrock as leader of ShadowClan, because the layout makes the leaders sit side-by-side. Might as well play with that simple logistic fact, y'know?

He does this because I imagine this marking kind of intimidates people. It's like the ginger of his eye socket has set his iris ablaze with fire, while the other is as cold as rain-soaked peat.

The ear on the "colorful" side is also orange. All of his orange is on one side, except for his tail-tip.

He's actually distantly related to Nightcloud-- his Honor Sire (who was known but not involved) went on to have a mate. So he's the half-brother of one of her ancestors, and Nightcloud has inherited this thick, wooly fur texture.

Again, I draw him a lot so this was the easiest one. I didn't have to decide anything besides that I made his nose into a cute lil carebear heart.

The drawing I did for this synopsis of Ripplestar's Rot was actually the first time I drew him, for comparison! It's fun to see what's been streamlined.

GORSECLAW AND SPOTTEDPELT

FIRST sketches didn't feel right.

I feel like Gorseclaw's spades look too much like diamonds in this one, but I was really going for a tie.

I've been giving him those sideburns for months, so, they don't really fit the "shape theory" but I'm having a hard time removing them lmao.

And this is the first time I drew Spots which is a shame. I love a bad bitch.

If you look at my designs, you can notice that I have a few traits that cats from each Clan "tend" to have. They're all pretty genetically similar actually and there's a lot of crossings between the groups, secret or otherwise, but some traits just get selected for more than others, and StarClan is likely to toss them into kits. SkyClan has saggy skin (like a bear) and really bendy tails.

Don't think it's come through well here, though. In future drafts I'm going to try and make them saggier.

(Why? It actually helps them against insect stings and impact damage, like falling from trees and being hit by branches)

Then I went on to draft 2,

I like Spottedpelt a LOT more in this draft. That's probably going to be close to the final design I do, I'm really vibing with the dapple-spades.

I DON'T like Gorseclaw in this one though, the face shape reminds me waaay too much of Dustpelt's familial face-plate. Absolutely going to revise that, probably making it more mask-like akin to Spots'.

Also very proud of myself for the spade-shaped ears.

Hate Gorse's tie here though, that's not a tie that is a stinkhorn mushroom.

But Spots' medal is excellent. Absolutely keeping that. She is a distinguished little war crime kitty

Still not fat and saggy enough. Coming back to this. I need to learn how to draw a primordial pouch.

LARKSTRIPE

I'm trying to redesign her and I'm losing :/

This was the FIRST first draft of the redesign and that heart chain is underwhelming.

It felt like too much of a downgrade from the diamond-pattern Larkstripe I did, and I'm worried that maybe it's because diamonds just look so much nicer in a "chain"

I feel like I see too many perfect hearts on chests in WC designs, so when I do them, I try to do something weird with them like what I did to Heartstar

So I turned hers into a little fur tuft splash. I like the idea tbh, I might repurpose it for another design.

I'm beginning to think that maybe I don't like the sketches because Larkstripe is sad :( I like when I can draw her angry, before the strikebreaking broke her

And unfortunately she is the absolute most tragic character in BB. They took the fight out of her. I figure it would be symbolically fitting for the heart shape on her chest to "break" after Dalestar's decree.

For those asking questions, no, she never joins Skypelt. She is convinced she did the wrong thing and ended up unleashing an era of suffering on the Clans by having Ripplestar follow in her footsteps, though she had no control over him.

She's a character who would offer her life as an example during trials involving the Cleric's Vow, especially since I've gutted Moth Flight in BB. She argues about how important it is to avoid birthing cats who will claim their conquest is holy in the name of their parents.

She would also have something to say to Mudfur, admonishing him for breaking his Vow so openly, even saying that he's responsible for Leopardstar and all of her choices.

Basically, Larkstripe is beaten. She is a very tired, shameful spirit who repeats exactly what Silverpelt told her, during her own trial. She's so grateful to be here that she acts with devotion towards it.

Hurt people hurt people and all

But anyway, I still feel like it's a bit of a downgrade from the older design for Larkstripe, so I'm probably going to keep playing with it.

BIRDFLIGHT AND MARSHSCAR

[ID: BB!Birdflight. She's a tabby with the spades motif, long bases stretching up into hears on her shoulder, side, and flank.]

I want her to look old and tired. She's got that Leafpoolyness about her.

She's technically the very first member of the Tigerkin family, and has those characteristic long-claws.

I imagine in Clanmew her name is actually Yassgafba, "Raptor preparing to take flight." I have this really sad mental image of a majestic hawk that keeps spreading its wings, as if to take off and fly away, but never does.

Fitting, because she waited her whole life for Cloudstar to send word they'd found a new home, to come and fetch her and their children, but never did.

While I'm at the trivia, yes, Ripplestar and her were very close. Larkstripe argues in StarClan that Ripplestar started his war because of her, but it's not true. It was Birdflight who made him believe that Cloudstar would never abandon his family; if they hadn't heard from him, something was very wrong.

She died before he became leader, probably of a sickness outbreak. She likely didn't take the journey because she's immunocompromised in some way, plus the two newborns.

She was given a place in StarClan, but I'm not sure if she followed Ripplestar and Birdflight into the Dark Forest. She DID vote to accept them though.

I think she's practical about this. Leave for the Dark Forest, and you loose your voting power in StarClan.

She sees that there are very few SkyClan ancestors left here, hears Skystar scoff that the others are fools for leaving, that if more had remained then the rebels would not have been damned... and understands the value in his words.

If there's any reason for the Tigerkin Curse (which I hadn't really been working with until now, tbh, I just chalked it up to Bad Mojo on the night of Ripplestar's last stand), it's probably related to Birdflight in some way. Which is why no one knows what's causing it.

I don't know why, yet, though. Maybe it's an accident on her part. She could be crafting their litters, but every time she finishes a set, she can't help but cry about how much the fresh souls remind her of the newborns that stopped her from joining her mate, and her kits in the Dark Forest.

It's probably why the PROPER curse might stop abruptly after SkyClan's return. She joins Skypelt as soon as it's an option.

[ID: BB!Marshscar. He's a scrawny, battle-scarred old tabby with a diamond motif.]

He doesn't have any markings in-canon so I tried to just make all of his scars diamond-shaped. I don't think it works, I'm going to give him some markings.

I like the ears though, that's staying. I might also borrow from the old Larkstripe design, give him those funky diamond-spikes on his chest.

I have barely talked about him, but he is actually very important to Ripplestar. They've been mates since they were young warriors.

I kinda want to make it so that Spottedpelt was Ripplestar's deputy before being killed that night, but it was always implicit that if something happened to them, Marshscar was next in charge.

This drawing is definitely when he's older and more worn-out, he lives a long life without Ripplestar, ruling ShadowClan reluctantly, half-heartedly doing the bare minimum.

It's a downer story, and I think it really fits the theme here that Clan Culture is about to get a whole lot worse before it gets better... but still I love the fact that Ripplestar's Rot just ends with the entire cast like

Ways To Protect Yourself – Banish Negative Energies and Entities

Cleansing: This is mainly for weaker negative entities and energies. Do something you think will actually work for you and your situation. Keep it simple and use salt or smoke to cleanse your spaces. Fire Rose Thorn Spell Jar

Ingredient List

– Salt water - 1 part Sea salt to 8 parts of spring water.

– 1 dried Rose 13 Rose Thorns

– 1 Small Glass Jar + a tightly fitting lid

– 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

– 1 teaspoon honey

– 5 hardware nails

Instructions

Put the Rose Thorns into the jar one at a time focusing on the intent desired; in this case driving negative entities and spirits away.

Crush up the Thorns in the jar.

Crush up the Rose petals and add them to the jar.

Slowly add the Saltwater.

Add the cinnamon powder, honey, and nails one by one.

Keep the jar open overnight.

The next morning before the sunrise close the lid.

Cover the jar with a cloth and dispose of it away from the house.

Holy Water

Christians use water that has been blessed by a church official. Wiccans use water blessed by their coven leader. Wet your fingers with the blessed water and run them along the thresholds for protection.

Banishing Rituals

Different rituals exist, but a simple way to perform a banishing ritual is to write down the problem on a piece of paper, being specific as possible. After deeply focusing on the problem written down on the piece of paper, burn it. Cleanse it with fire.

Objects of Protection

Herbs: Sage, Acacia, Angelica, Aloe, Amber, Bay leaf, Betel nut, Carnation, Lavender, Peat moss, Peony, Radish, and Yew.

Bells are hung from the door handle or near the thresholds to protect your home, and ward off harm, negativity, and bad spirits. Any type of bell will do. Some practitioners even have a collection of bells.

BOG QUEEN, 2020 A commission where I was asked to draw inspiration from Seamus Heaney's poem of the same name... I lay waiting between turf-face and demesne wall, between heathery levels and glass-toothed stone.

My body was braille for the creeping influences: dawn suns groped over my head and cooled at my feet,

through my fabrics and skins the seeps of winter digested me, the illiterate roots

pondered and died in the cavings of stomach and socket. I lay waiting

on the gravel bottom, my brain darkening, a jar of spawn fermenting underground

dreams of Baltic amber. Bruised berries under my nails, the vital hoard reducing in the crock of the pelvis.

My diadem grew carious, gemstones dropped in the peat floe like the bearings of history.

My sash was a black glacier wrinkling, dyed weaves and phoenician stitchwork retted on my breasts'

soft moraines. I knew winter cold like the nuzzle of fjords at my thighs–

the soaked fledge, the heavy swaddle of hides.

“Thank you, Alex,” Henry says, reaching out for the paper-wrapped waffle cone if only to stop the nervous flow of words from Alex’s mouth. “...what is it?”

“English toffee,” Alex says with a mischievous smile and a wiggle of his eyebrows, and Henry can’t stop the laugh that rings out of his chest. Henry has never liked toffee, has come to associate it with his grandmother, crystal-cut bowl on her desk, her sharp fingers the only one to ever lift the lid and pluck a golden brown square from the top of the pile. But it’s fascinating to feel a memory being rewritten inside yourself as it happens, the cold vanilla ice-cream making the toffee crunch and crack beneath his back teeth, the sticky mass filling the space of his molars as he follows the first bite up with a second, and then a third, pushing the bitter memory of lack out for a sweeter memory wrapped in waffle-cone abundance. He eats it far faster than he should, far too fast for it to be anything but embarrassing. “Sorry,” he mutters through the final mouthful, but as he balls up the paper wrapping from his cone and meets Alex’s eyes again, it’s not judgment he sees reflected back at him.

Alex’s gaze has darkened, ambered honey transformed into something more closely resembling peat, and he’s trying and failing to look anywhere but at Henry’s mouth.

Worlds 2024 thoughts on the women:

Hell yes Queen Kaori Sakamoto! First three-peat since Peggy Fleming! We stan a strong beautiful legend! If anybody could shake off that fourth place short to win the title like it's no big deal, it's her. She just exudes confidence, but also kindness, it was so sweet when she went to get a flag for Isabeau Levito at the medal ceremony. Sh'e'd just won the title, and in a moment that could have been all about her, she was still assisting the girl next to her. Just a class act all around. I love that girls have a female role model like her.

Sad for Loena Hendrickx though, I really thought she would make the podium after killing it and winning the short, but I didn't realize she was injured. That honestly was so brave of her to come and compete anyway, knowing how much harder a freeskate is to power through when you're not in top form. I'm not usually even a fan of pop music in skating, but I'm a fan of her because of how she revels in being authentically herself out there, in addition to being a powerhouse technically. She tried her best, and she's still European Champion!

Isabeau Levito though! Perfect ice princess honestly. If I could skate, she's exactly the kind of skater I'd want to be. Balletic, graceful, sensitive to the music, mature beyond her years, and can jump. Just the whole package. Especially after her rough Nationals, it's so nice to see her achieve this success on the world stage. I'm glad she switched her short program too. While she did the snake dance one well, that music still belongs to Chock & Bates in my mind, and hers kind of suffered in comparison. Nella Fantasia suits her better, and she made it her own.

Amber Glenn did so well in the freeskate, and I'm so sad to see that she was disappointed, I really wish she could give herself the credit she's due. She landed a clean, fully rotated triple axel at worlds! The only woman to do so! That's an achivement! Yes, she made a few mistakes after that, but she held it together, it was a totally respectable program! She made the top ten at worlds! And with Isabeau finishing 2nd, I'm pretty sure that's enough to give the US women three spots next year! That's huge! I really, truly hope she has, or gets, people around her who celebrate her successes rather than fixate on her mistakes, because she has all the goods, and she is improving every time she competes. Even small steps are upward progress, and I hope she sees that, and believes in herself as much as we fans believe in her.

I'm tired and need to go to sleep, but those were the ones that stuck out most for me. I think all of the women did pretty well on the whole, and this was a great competition!

Worldbuiltober Day 14: Crown

A meeting of a progressive kanton oligarchy in the Vobanar Confederacy.

The Confederacy is made up of trading city-states that joined under a confederation along the river Stel. Under pressure of absorption from the Azure Commonwealth, they chose to unite as a confederacy around three-hundred years ago. The Vobanar Confederacy enjoys a subarctic climate with a mild summer. The northeastern mountain range is rich in arcana-sensitive material and metals. Lumber is another important source of materials, including paper, building materials and fuel. Products like radishes, potatoes, wheat, reindeer, goats, sheep, various fur creatures and fish feed and clothe the population. Peat, wool and salt are important resources for the lowland agricultural areas. Furs, amber, salt, ore, lumber, paper, artisan items, knowledge, arcana and cold-weather spices are their strongest exports. The Stel is considered the lifeline of the country. Most major cities lie along it. Each state, "kanton", is goverened by an oligarchy. A push towards stronger democracy has recently shaken multiple kantons. They now include people from most walks of life and species in their power elite through a free voting system. This has given native northern dragonborn and other minorities a bigger chance. Other kantons are goverened by the more traditional groups of urban or land-owning elves, humans and dwarves. The oligarchal elite distinguish themselves by wearing amber around the wrist. The exact style is different per kanton and cultural ethnicity, ranging from cufflinks in Ninestar to whole beaded wraps in the high north.

“Y’know, you’re kind of a jerk sometimes.”

“Can you just shut your mouth and patch me up already?”

The brush of medicinal alcohol caused Koret to hiss, jolting back as Ashe grabbed a hold of her wrist to keep her steady. It wasn’t common for the brawler to shift into a curative role these days, especially with Shiro becoming a doctor, but the rare times that the captain presented herself to her she found herself compelled, and the most basic of first aid came easy for someone who learned to patch themself up from their own mishaps. She went back in with the wipe, ignoring how the woman growled; twisting her lip into a crooked smile when she retorted, “You did that on purpose.”

“Maybe.” The wipe came away bloody, a darkened peat-brown like graves dug along the edges of Ala Mhigo, and smelled not too dissimilar to the aftermath of the Garlean invasion — clinical, chemical and rust-wound. She tossed it into the bin and retrieved another, continuing to dab at the wound. “Y’lucky it’s me and not Shiro. Could be a lot worse.”

She knew why it wasn’t Shiro. The two had a shared history; a shared bond, of sorts. Koret Swan didn’t need to explain why she came to her door black and blue — she didn’t need to rehearse the same story, the same twisted chorus or endure the pity fresh in the face of every chirurgeon within a thousand-malm radius.

“What pissed him off now?” Him. Not her. Ashe watched the way Kor snickered, her voice bemused but her eyes bereft of mirth. The side of her cheek bulged where her tongue pressed, like a deadened whale swelling with decay, but the words she might have said were interred to the rot until they sank into irrelevancy.

“When I find something that doesn’t, I’ll let you know.”

She looked at her then, amber-gold to earthen-brown, and Ashe’s chest grew tight. She hated how she couldn’t protect her — hated that, despite the fact they weren’t so different, time, people and circumstance had twisted them to different paths — and that the blood she dabbed away in thickening clots was only one separation away from her own.

“Papa always said he was a little bitch.”

He was more polite than that, but it made Kor laugh.

Ashe smiled in return, casting off the final wipe before turning back and grabbing a hold of the small sewing kit. Threading the needle, she carefully pushed the skin of her eyebrow up and began to crudely stitch it back together.

“—Always said he had somethin’ t’prove, being the youngest. Said he would whinge like a baby if he didn’t get his way.” They were never things said to Ashley specifically, more… discovered in the night when they first arrived at Limsa Lominsa, bitterly thrown to their compatriots. They were snarled the last time the two men ever spoke to each other, trading blows beneath the Marauder’s Guild after an altercation in the Drowning Wench had the three imprisoned in the small holding cells — Ashe on the outside looking in, swiftly retrieved by the guards the moment she began to scream.

Dimitri was able to pay his way out, but her father remained.

She knew he made it difficult for them. She knew he felt… slighted by that night. Embarrassed.

He liked Ashe because he thought she was a cabin boy. He scorned the pantomime of gender when he found out proper.

It never bothered her, but she knew it bothered Kor. There was tension in her fingers, her maw set in a hard line. How many times had the two been compared — how often did she wish she could be him, not knowing the him was a farce?

The few times they traded looks when they were children, her in rags and she in Sunday best, she knew she loathed her. She also knew Lily didn’t know her at all.

Strange to mourn a cousin seen in glances.

Careful not to nick the skin, Ashe snipped the thread pulled to a tight knot. Kor let out the air she held in a sigh, ballooning her through the pain, and reached her hand up to touch her face. The skin was swollen, the outer edges already going blue.

“Thank you,” said after a beat — like it was a forgotten sentiment, a habit she was trying to retrain. Ashe laughed proper now and grabbed a hold of her hand.

“You’re welcome. Still kind of a jerk, though.”

“Blame my father,” she said, though Ashe swore she saw a proper smile there.

“I do! I really think if we knew each other better as kids we would ‘ave gotten along.”

At least they were together now — that was the thing that counted. Time and treachery had carved a rift between them but, even in the stoicism of the captain’s words, she knew the tender sentiment. “I think you’re pushing your luck.”

Economics of Brodia

Brodia is said to have mineral wealth. With an abundance of mineral resources, accounting for a significant proportion of Elyso's production and reserves, Brodia could become an economy based on trade. If Brodia is based on Scotland then it is likely the following could be mined:

Fuel - coal, shale, peat,

Building materials - basalt, flagstone, granite, sandstone, slate, clay, limestone,

Minerals - gold, silver, talc, zinc, mica, manganese, iron, barite, copper, lead, chromium,

Gemstones - agates, topaz, quartz, sapphire

Mining is very important to the economy because it provides employment, (Jade used to guard a mine, her family worked with the minerals), dividends and taxes to pay for the services of the Royal family. The mining industry produces a trained workforce and small businesses that can service communities and may initiate related businesses.

Mining has a few disadvantages which include: when a mine is empty, people lose their job which creates job insecurity, dust can be a health hazard, environmental impact and noise.

Amber mentions that he comes from a hamlet famous for Alpacas. This suggests that there are places associated with different industries. Lapis's home town seems to be famous for yams. Brodia may also have some species of fish that are unique to their waters. The commodities from these locations could be internally and externally traded.

The military of Brodia has a large impact on the economy. Military spending can create an infrastructure to support the active personnel as well as supporting related businesses such as blacksmiths. However spending and workers are diverted from the basic necessities and other areas of research and employment. Obtaining more land could equals more natural resources which could create jobs.
