Hiiii I have a community question I wanted to ask!!

Abed mentions all sorts of movies and tv shows through out Community, but I just wanted to know if maybe you have like a list of which ones are real and which ones he seemed to like more than others.

I can only think of the dark knight because of the dvd Annie broke, and the Star Wars movies (except he apparently hates the prequels) and cougar town!

so, he mentions/references an insane number of movies and tv shows throughout the series, and I unfortunately do not have a list of every single one. although, I am (VERY slowly) working on an in-depth episode-by-episode analysis of the entire series, and listing every pop culture reference is a subsection in that. but that's not helpful right now. moving on

I believe this is a list he apparently made in 2009, either in the first few weeks of school or right before the school year started. so it's possible he would answer differently as the series progressed. also, I do take some of these extra-canon things with a grain of salt, as on the same form he said his favorite place on campus was study room D or something, when obviously they definitely meant to write study room F. so, the credibility of my source for this information isn't exactly rock-solid. although, he does mention a lot of these movies on screen, and expresses love for many of them (the most notable ones probably being star wars episodes IV-VI, the breakfast club, and pulp fiction)

as you can see from the list, abed particularly loves american movies from the 80's. just a trend I thought I’d point out.

here's a few others he mentions loving, or just pretty notably references:

rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (1964, musical/animated, is the whole basis of 2x11 abed's uncontrollable christmas)

the shawshank redemption (1994, horror/crime, is the basis for his plot with troy, annie, and shirley in 4x05 cooperative escapism in familial relations)

freaky friday (I believe it's the original one from 1976 specifically, but it's been remade a bunch. comedy/fantasy. it's the basis of abed and troy's story in 4x11 basic human anatomy)

rambo/first blood (series starting in 1982, action/thriller. abed talks about how messy the progressive series titles are in 3x14 pillows and blankets)

ocean's eleven (2001, crime/thriller, the basis for the heist scene from 3x21 the first chang dynasty)

hearts of darkness (1991, documentary/war, abed mentions it while pointedly filming dean pelton's production of his greendale commercial rather than helping with the commercial itself. similarly, hearts of darkness filmed the making of apocalypse now)

die hard (series starting in 1988, action/thriller, abed mentions wanting to do a die hard homage for christmas multiple times throughout season 4)

good will hunting (1997, thriller/romance, troy and abed's story in 1x24 english as a second language is filled with references to this movie. abed is doing homages on purpose, troy is not)

my dinner with andre (1981, comedy/drama, abed does a very elaborate homage at jeff's accidental expense in 2x19 critical film studies)

indiana jones (raiders of the lost ark, temple of doom, and the last cruscade only. he mentions loving the first three indiana jones movies in 1x04 social psychology)

aliens (1986, action/adventure/sci-fi, he and troy dress up as an alien and ripley in 2x06 epidemiology) (side note, I believe they're specifically referencing aliens, which is a sequel to alien. could be wrong though)

blade (1998, horror/action, they watch it over the course of 3x15 origins of vampire mythology after troy and abed assert multiple times that it is an amazing movie)

I think he generally talks about movies more than he talks about tv shows, but he does mention quite a few of them. some notable mentions are:

friends (1994, sitcom, mentions at least twice)

m*a*s*h (1972, sitcom, mentions in passing in 1x05 advanced criminal law, and references throughout 1x13 investigative journalism)

the cape (2011, action, mentions throughout 4x13 advanced introduction to finality)

who's the boss (1984, sitcom, is the premise of his whole storyline in 2x20 competitive wine tasting)

LOST (2004, sci-fi, mentions at least twice)

obviously there are a LOT more, but I just tried to list some of the most important ones, plot-wise and for understanding of his character. hopefully I’ll be able to get back to everyone with a super long list of every tv show and movie he ever mentions lmao, but that'll take a while. (there are lists online that say they list every movie and tv show abed has ever mentioned, but ngl I don't 100% trust those, so I’ll make my own lmao. but I put the link to one of them if you're curious. here's another one too)

at this point anyone who has seen community knows there are some really really big ones that I haven’t mentioned yet. pieces of media that are INTEGRAL to abed as a character. I was saving them for last lmfao. they are:

kickpuncher

inspector spacetime

cougar town

if I had to pick a holy trinity of media for abed, it would be these three things. these are EASILY the things he talks about the most, which is interesting, as both the kickpuncher movie franchise and the inspector spacetime series are completely fictional, and only exist in the community universe. (this is probably so they can show abed actually watching some of the shows/movies he talks about, without the obvious copyright issues that come with playing clips from an already existing movie/tv show on your screen. they kind of do that with blade in 3x15, but they only play vague fighting sounds, and never show their tv on our screen. anyway. not relevant.) to answer one of your questions from the ask, I believe those two are the ONLY fictional pieces of media abed talks about. as far as I know, everything else he mentions is real, including cougar town.

kickpuncher is obviously reminiscent of sci-fi/action films from the 80's, like robocop. like I said earlier, taking their place so that they could have a more substantial role in abed's on-screen life without any copywrite worries. it's a whole franchise, so there are multiple movies: kickpuncher, kickpuncher 2: codename: punchkicker, kickpuncher 3: the final kickening, kickpuncher: detroit, kickpuncher: miami (?), and kicksplasher (?). kicksplasher is apparently shown as a poster on abed's wall, and I’m assuming it's from the same franchise, although that could be wrong. the point is there's a very elaborate universe for kickpuncher, and it's a big part of abed's, and later troy's, film taste. the first time they mention it is in 1x15 romantic expressionism, when abed, troy, shirley, pierce, and chang all get together in abed's dorm room to make fun of stupid movies together. it's funny that it was introduced as a stupid movie to watch ironically, then troy and abed both end up genuinely loving it lmao. classic

inspector spacetime is obviously reminiscent of doctor who. they're both british sci-fi series that have been running for decades. doctor who uses a police box to travel the multiverse, while doctor who uses a telephone box. doctor who has malicious daleks who chant "exterminate," while inspector spacetime has blorgons who shout "eradicate." the concepts of the shows are obviously the same, with the actor for the doctor changing every season, etc etc. they're essentially the same exact show, but, like I said before, changed slightly so they can world-build without getting copywrited. there is something a little bit silly about this, though. it's definitely a continuity error and it's up to everyone whether they want to accept it as canon or not, I guess, but there's an episode where abed is actually wearing a doctor who t-shirt. (it also references bill and ted, but the doctor who part is what's relevant.) here's some pictures:

awesome shirt tbh, but it is a little bit funny that is essentially makes it true that doctor who and inspector spacetime both exist in the community universe. and, these pictures are from the cold open of 4x11 basic human anatomy, which is way after inspector spacetime is introduced to the show (3x01 biology 101). so, is inspector spacetime just a rip-off of doctor who? is abed a fan of both shows? if he is, clearly he likes inspector spacetime better. anyway. I would guess that this wasn't intentional. but that is definitely a tardis on that shirt. maybe it's just a classic season 4 continuity mistake. oh well. I guess that's just how the cookie crumbles. anyway.

cougar town time! yes, it's a real show. I didn't think it was but it is. what's not real is cougarton abbey, the short-lived british remake that britta gets abed into in 3x01 biology 101. but yeah. it has 6 seasons and is streaming on hulu, if you're interested. I’ve heard it's not good but who knows for sure. something cool about cougar town is that abed is actually in an episode. let me be clear: not danny pudi. ABED. it's similar to the story abed tells about being invited to the cougar town set and shitting his pants while having an existential crisis about the layers of reality. here is a youtube clip of the scene. I found out about it while stalking danny pudi's wikipedia page months ago, you know, a typical sunday afternoon activity, and I saw a cougar town credit on there. I didn't even know it was a real show at that point so you can imagine my surprise lmao. anyway. idk if you knew that already but it's one of my favorite community easter eggs. so funny.

I'm the crazy obsessed and delusional Indian lady who thinks she's in a relationship with max and some of the things I do may seem similar to kelly or what she has done in the past but I think its the differences that count.

1. Kelly had max right by her side when she made fake accounts and spread rumors about being with him. And his ex gf wasn't still pretending to be his gf on social media or irl.

If I have max by my side rn or when our relationship isn't public yet, I wouldn't be on my phone so much or we would be reading any gossip together and laugh about the fake stuff and then get busy with other stuff 🙈

2. I dont support conservatives especially after posting pro-choice stores on insta. I'm still not sure where exactly I stand on the topic(only when it comes to consensual sex), but I'm open to discussion and learning.

3. I'll never post personal information especially after being asked not to. I dont have anything on insta right now and I will start posting but it's going to be with the approval of everyone that's involved.

And I dont mind answering questions on your blog about our relationship together, now and then when we're free. I have plans to not be so away from the fans during the winter break, cuz I've been there and I know how I've missed him, they don't involve pictures tho.

4. I dont like drinking. I know he loves it and she loves it but I don't think I can get myself to start drinking. It might change when we're older but I can't guarantee anything for now.

5. I have no obsession with branded stuff. Yes I do prefer them cuz they're good quality but If it's a pretty dress I don't mind who made it. a background to how i think the "ackerbond" works in the first place

*disclaimer, i don’t believe the ackerbond is strictly romantic.

thinking about erwin and eren in relation to levi and mikasa.

1: whenever there’s a scene from levi’s point of view - especially after erwin dies - the majority of the time there’s going to be a callback or mention of him. (i think there was a joke in the fandom where isayama has drawn the crate scene from every visual perspective imaginable lol.)

the same goes for eren in mikasa’s point of view, especially when he’s been put in danger.

in many respects, the opposite is true from eren/erwin’s pov, but for eren especially after the rumbling begins. scenes from his point of view are nearly nonexistent, but they heavily feature mikasa.

it's also been pointed out before that in this promo image, mikasa is featured the most. i can find the link if anyone's interested.

2: mikasa is viciously protective of eren and is always looking out for his well-being in general. levi’s protectiveness is much less obvious, and also, he’d always follow an order from erwin even if it puts erwin himself in danger. levi's feelings about erwin primarily revolve around trust.

you don’t see levi or mikasa interacting with or depicting these behaviors towards anyone else in the series. besides erwin/eren, my very next idea of a second person to develop the “ackerbond” with would be hange and armin, respectively.

so what about hange would make someone like levi want to trust them implicitly? what Thing (like Erwin’s passion towards a peaceful world) do they have that would complete levi? erwin showed levi hope. someone can rb with their thoughts.

and as for mikasa, armin or mayyyyybe jean? i think that mikasa looked for true love in eren because the foundation of her character is, ‘this world is cruel, but also very beautiful’. eren showed her love the day her parents died. again, someone can rb with their thoughts.

but that’s the “ackerbond” develops in my mind.

again this is my opinion, but i would say no, that once an ackerman finds their special person, that kind of bond can’t be replicated with another. (tho another part of me really wants to say yes lol)

as for your second question, the “ackerbond” being grouped in with their powers implies that this special and intense propensity to love is supernatural / is first a trait belonging to titans.

but love is an innately human ability.

granted, i don't believe that mikasa for instance just "likes eren so much", so i think zeke is underplaying it, but still.

i think that trait is just a part of an ackerman. IF it were the case that it was somehow supernatural (like just for example, an ackerman experiencing their liege’s pain and vice versa), then that would go away with their powers. but that doesn't appear to be the case in canon at all.

but otherwise, i think that the “ackerbond” would still be there even after the war. in a nutshell levi and mikasa love hard lol

Idk about bribes (the Santander situation is interesting, if that's what you're referring to, but there's less concrete information on that so I'm mostly going to focus on relevant documented past experiences here).

In regards to the Sainz family, politicking, and how much power/influence they wield, I think the closest example to what's currently happening is 2015-2016 Toro Rosso when Max and Carlos (both Red Bull juniors) were teammates. Obviously they were really young at the time and just starting out their F1 careers so it's no surprise that their fathers (both having first-hand motorsport experience) were hovering, closely involved in their sons' careers. With Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri/whatever being a "junior" sister team to Red Bull everyone's treating it as a stepping stone rather than a long-term career commitment and the goal is, ideally, to impress enough to be promoted to one of the coveted Red Bull seats.

And so tensions arose between the two camps, with Jos and Sainz Sr apparently pulling out all the stops against each other and generally creating a difficult working environment as they lobbied for their sons' interests.

Max was more volatile and had less experience as a driver, but even back then it was obvious he's a natural talent and has potential, so Horner, Marko and co. were leaning towards picking him over Carlos. After some ~drama~ he gets swapped in for Kvyat at the start of the 2016 season; the Mercs crashed each other out in the opening laps of the Spanish GP, and Max was in the right place at the right time, getting his first win in his first race with RB.

Carlos, meanwhile, was spending another season at Toro Rosso. Mid-2017 Red Bull is sent into a crisis when stories start surfacing about Max wanting to leave Red Bull and sign with Ferrari or that he's even put pen to paper already.

The Dutch camp, including media, claim that the stories were planted by the Sainzes through Spanish press to drive a wedge between Max and RB (in hopes of Carlos getting the seat instead.)

Now, with both the Dutch and Spanish sides being involved it's obviously going to be subjective so take it with a grain of salt, but where there's smoke there's usually fire 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's impossible to say 100% whether stories were in fact planted, and if they were, to what degree Carlos was aware or involved, but since this notion has come up again in relation to Ferrari I figured I'd touch on it. It's also been said that he and Max has a generally good relationship as teammates and that it was mostly the dads who were stirring shit, so. Here's Marko roasting Sainz Sr again because that will never not be funny I fear 😭😭😭

Funnily enough, last year Marko gave an interview where he brought up the whole thing Camp Verstappen vs Camp Sainz thing again, so it's fair to say the reports of internal conflict, at the very least, were true.

hey so I was wondering if you had any advice for dialogue?

I don't have any problems with making it flow or sound natural but I've found that I tend to condense conversations as much as possible. when I write them out really long I feel like it's kind of droning on and people might find that boring, but I'm not sure if it actually is or if that's just part of being an author

I absolutely love the pacing in Taking Shots and am using it as a model for the fic I'm currently working on, and i noticed that the dialogue in that one tends to be pretty long but still so enjoyable to read. how do you do it?

so step one when you’re writing something is to come to terms with the fact that you’re writing something. no matter what you do, opinions will vary. some people really like meandering dialogue, some people prefer things quick and snappy, and there’s always going to be arguments about it if you put it up for critique. if you’re writing a story or dialogue, longer tends to work well because it helps slow down pacing. with comics and animations and things like that, dialogue needs to be really to-the-point. neither is right or wrong, they’re different toolsets for different situations. you’ll find yourself settling into a pattern more naturally eventually, somewhere on the spectrum between Ulysses and Letterkenny, and trying to get out of the mindset of overall self-consciousness will help a ton. instead, working with it on a level closer to “is this taking the right amount of time in the story” would be a good start. vibes matter.

if your problem is you feel like the dialogue should take up more time, i can break down a couple things i tend to do that make conversations take more time. eventually you start doing this meandering naturally, but like most other things, knowing the vocabulary for it helps a lot.

first on the list is the classic blundering. characters forgetting the word they’re looking for and fishing for it (with the additional perk of making that word emphasized) misunderstanding each other and needing things rephrased (which also helps with stressing and clarifying to the reader that something is potentially important, or to clarify cloudy events or situations), or slips of the tongue that are then stumbled over for a few back-and-forth volleys (helping either endear the character to the reader or make them seem more fallible to whoever they’re talking to). you don’t necessarily need to slam the entirety of Who’s On First into every bit of dialogue, but misunderstandings can be good for comedic potential, stressing important plot information, and overall just making characters seem more human. i have a problem of talking too fast, and the amount of times i hear “what’d you say?” in my day-to-day is staggering. it’s something people do!

second, getting off track altogether. elaborating maybe more than absolutely necessary and having characters go into more detail can give insight into what a character finds important—a quick sidebar to talk about an individual can tell you a lot. a character saying “and i knew his niece, she plays soccer, really nice kid, heard she’s headed to college soon” paints a different character portrait than “he always wears these really clean shined shoes, wingtip, the classic kind” paints a different portrait than “guy is tall, walks with a cane, bushy mustache, talks like he’s always chewing gum”, each telling you different things about the person speaking. what they notice and feel is important to share tells you a lot about them, and sidebars can help fill a lot of gaps. besides that, getting off track to explain something the others don’t really know about and to argue the finer points of things does the same function.

third, you can have characters repeat things, rehash things. a character hears a story and repeats back an overview, occasionally getting corrected, questioning finer points and giving the other one a while to elaborate and defend themselves. you can have a new character be introduced to a joke familiar to the audience, giving them a chance to chime in on it. really, it’s good for establishing where characters stand with each other, whether they’re on the same page. characters bringing up things about recent events, the environment, current tasks, it can all be related to seeing how the characters all individually feel about the situation. clarifying questions make it clear where the characters misunderstood or want to know more, and can help as an insight for the audience to preemptively answer questions.

i’m sure there’s more than that. it helps to essentially slow down while you’re writing, to let the characters meander. you might know where a conversation is headed, but the characters often don’t, and giving them the time to get there on their own terms can get you a pretty solid word count. my most important policy is always that i only ever have characters get in conversations that i care about. pretty much every talk you’ve seen in my stuff—definitely all of them in the RB series—have been ones that i enjoyed, even looked forward to. letting characters riff for a while is really fun to me.

let's dig into this a little bit (i hope you don't mind) because i actually have some very conflicted thoughts on this.

student/sensei ships make me deeply uncomfortable, as i've said. that's a period. full stop. i do not care what age they are; they met when one person was a fully matured adult and the other was a child. that's gonna be a hard pass for me, regardless.

what i will say is, depending on who this is, i might actually already know your identity because i know i interact with a few people who ship at least one of these things on a semi-regular basis. it's almost unavoidable in this fandom, which is probably why i spent a decade just not interacting with a single other soul in the naruto community, lol.

in the end, i do fully agree that people should be allowed to ship what they want. these are make-believe, 2-dimensional characters from a cartoon. i get that. so it's on me to make sure i'm not interacting with content that makes me uncomfortable.

to do that, before i follow anyone (or follow them back), i scroll through their blog for posts related to these ships. if i see even one, i will not follow. (this goes for ao3 accounts, too; if your bookmarks are public, i will look at them and make my decision based on that information.) same for fanart; i won't even rb stuff if i know the person who creates it ships one of these things simply because i want to keep it as far out of my orbit as possible.

because based on my own personal history & experiences, these things can really upturn my entire day. even seeing the ship name sends this visceral reaction through my body (oh, hey my mostly ignored ptsd, nice to see you again!).

as such, i will often block on sight blogs that are recommended to me by tumblr's lame-ass algorithm if they are blogs dedicated to these types of ships and have zero remorse about it. i also recently blocked someone who writes solely for one of these ships because they reblogged some of my content. i felt really badly about it for, like, an entire night. i don't like blocking people. i don't enjoy that these things have such a measurable impact on my well-being.

but we each have to decide where our comforts and discomforts lie and prioritize that. because if we don't, who tf else will?

so what i am going to say is: if you keep that shit off my blog, we can probably be cool for the most part. i'm never gonna follow your, and i hope you will understand and respect that decision.

but as i said in that recent post, if anyone who i know ships one of these things spreads any team 7-specific content i have created, that's a hard no. you want to reblog my smutty kakashi/reader fics? that's fine. (unless someone were to tag it with a ship name in which case, like, why? there is so much content for those ships everywhere, please leave me out of it.)

just, please, understand there are reasons these ships are so upsetting to me. just as i'd never push anyone to accept something i shipped & they didn't, and i would never expect anyone who is uncomfortable with reader-insert smut to interact with my page, i hope others will see where i'm coming from even if we disagree on ships.

i'd been calling myself eclectic until a few weeks ago when i realised i actually had. very little interest in crystals and herbs beyond guiding tools.

well, rather - i hadn't been calling myself much of anything, but i guess that's what i could be categorized as. i don't so much practice my craft diligently as much i do turn to it for a sudden source of comfort and faith.

i'm agnostic, leaning to atheist, and very much a skeptic (although i wish i weren't). witchcraft for me is the only thing i can find myself almost putting my faith in - especially divination. it's the perfect mix of "there's something beyond us, the universe does care" and "fate is in our hands, we are the universe" for me

This Week’s Expert Picks

This has been on my TBR List forever and I finally got to it. The story is mainly about Logen Ninefingers, a barbarian know for his brutality and the will to live on. His story is intertwined with several others including a Captain in the army, a crippled man known as Inspector Glokta, and a strange wizard named Bayaz. War is on the rise, coming from the north. Conspiracies and conspirators are everywhere dashing the line between friend and foe, who is to be trusted?

For a first novel this is a fantastic start to a fantasy trilogy. Plenty of blood and swordplay as the cover suggests but it also features a ton of world building and really fleshes out each individual character. What I like about Abercrombie is that he gives you enough background to continue the plot forward but not so much that you’re bored to death with the details. The tales interweave nicely, bringing together all the characters in a unique fashion.

I’m excited to finish out the trilogy, and find out where all the characters end up next. I also love how he describes the use of magic; it isn’t an everyday thing. It is still a mysterious and unique thing when Bayaz uses it. The first book is extremely gritty and visceral and sets up the next two book’s wonderfully. Very surprised it hasn’t been made into tv series yet, but keep an eye out. CJH

It’s Thanksgiving this month and I suppose all I can hope for is that the Pandemic has quarantined you from any politically-heated family gatherings, the election surely still enough of a catalyst to keep Thanksgiving Dinner conversation lively enough.

a = Aunt Sylvia - She has a lot to say about Planned Parenthood (and it isn’t what you think/hoped for).

b = “The baby!” - Whoever has the newest baby; it’s that baby.

g = Grandma - The last remaining grandparent. Just do whatever she wants even though it rarely makes sense.

G = Cousin Greg - He’s transitioning but you can’t remember which way and that makes you an asshole so you desperately try to think of conversation topics that don’t have to do with that but it’s impossible.

T = Tyrtle - Your brother’s Golden Retriever and your Guardian Angel and savior for the night.

c = Charleen - Your cool aunt that has a few cigarettes for you when you sneak out to the backyard to have a panic attack.

Basically? Much like time, your relatives will slowly and painfully kill you but cherish them anyway.

This Fight Is Our Fight is a battle manual for life under and after Trump. Elizabeth Warren uses every bit of her intellect and research skills to put out information in plain language on how to resurrect an economy that once served the people.

I'll be honest: I never really believed in the middle class, in the American Dream story. I thought it was a myth sold into Americana as an aesthetic. And I'm from an immigrant family. I know my grandparents came here as refugees with nothing and that my dad has two masters degrees and yet I found it incredibly hard to believe that one could start from the bottom and find financial success and freedom because I have never seen it.

Betsy, (apparently Warren's friends and family call her Betsy) with folksy phrasing, simple charts, and meticulously researched facts, proved me wrong. American capitalism worked once--with hardcore post-Depression regulations.

Warren gives us plain truths: past, present, and future. She relates the economic history of the US that led to the Great Depression; she goes deep into Franklin Delano Roosevelt's policies, then the effects of those; then Reagan's trickle down system, the aftermath of that; and how things look today.

I want to repeat that she does this all in plain language with an awkward folksiness so it almost feels like your All-American grandmother is an econ genius, like you're talking over apple pie at a Little League game. (I don't know--is that Americana? That's how I always imagine Americana. Like I said: immigrant family.)

What's amazing to me is how simple this all is. Warren easily defines terms and explains legislation that have long given me headaches. But, even better: she gives her readers a game plan. There is a clear call to action and a clear to do list set out so we know where to go from here.

I am writing this on November 5, 2020. We still don't know the final results of the presidential election and in this moment Warren's name is associated with the radical. I want to be clear that this is an important book of US Economics and I can't imagine our nation's economic future should be a partisan issue. I think everyone should read this book and if Grandma Betsy is too scary for them, she left 100 pages of notes and references from which we can dig up the academic papers and independent research from which the book was written. It's not a tangible book, but a blog, yet more like a bridge between searching souls, seeking to connect without any other way except words and want. Kendra Jean Ralston's poems, while rare, are placed perfectly in a wonderfully written blog called A Borrowed Muse, which I have had the pleasure of reading for almost a decade. If you love love, like me, and want to connect to the true human spirit (like great literature is supposed to do), then just trust me and read Ms. Ralston's words every damn day when you wake up, and I guarantee you will feel less alone in the wide world. This blog has literally kept my heart going more times than 22. Let's all hope one day she decides to publish a damn book we can all hold in our dumb hands to be reminded that love is real and life is worth living. RB
