Derek is a dancer coming back from rehabbing a horrible injury (lower back?? fucked up his knee??) and has a chip on his shoulder because a) he totally has stage fright! b) has a reputation for being surly and overly intense. Pre-injury he was a rising star in the ballet company and had a lot more confidence but now he is a man humbled, quiet, relieved not to be in charge, but he also feels like he has a ton to prove! Especially since his mom and his older sister are famous dancers.

The ballet troupe is smallish and Stiles is in charge of logistics and MARKETING! Because he is a noted uncoordinated klutz. He's all about strategy and reviewing data and making things happen, and he is the absolutely bane of Derek's existence. He wants Derek in photoshoots, he sometimes coordinates with the artistic director (Lydia) on people's roles, Derek finds the way he talks about engaging customers manipulative, and tbh Stiles can be abrasive and annoying! So smart but so mean!

Derek has a recognizable everything face so once he has returned Stiles wants him to do an ad photoshoot so they can slap his picture on the side of a bus and this just makes Derek feels even more pressure. Resents Stiles for this and also because it's compromising Derek's anonymity. His only respite is teaching children's ballet classes, which is something he started doing while rehabbing his injury and also because the pay to be a ballet dancer isn't great at this small troupe!

Derek thinks once his career is over he would like to teach

But sometimes, when Derek is teaching these first graders, who do not care if he is weird and quiet, he notices Stiles watching. He thinks at first Stiles is going to want to use this for marketing but Stiles never says anything about it, just stays to watch Derek and the kids.

Then at some sort of holiday dance event Derek runs into his horrible ex, Kate Argent, who is a principal at a much larger and more prestigious company, and panics...only for Stiles to appear, wrap an arm around Derek like they're dating, and say "hey babe, who's this?"

Andrew - I will live and die on the hill that is Andrew actually loving reading but the medication kind of made it impossible. I think Andrew is not the biggest fan of like 'main stream' books. Like he's read most of them but hasn't really found enjoyment in things that have broad public appeal (shocker). But things that are made like for a very specific audience (not even with Andrew as that audience) he will rinse through reading those.

A trashy romance that involves like 400 different facts about tea? He's there. A high fantasy story where they're using math to cast spells? Read the whole series in 2 days. He'll read anything Neil gets him because Neil is the #1 finder of unhinged book series with #2 being Allison who finds the most insane romance novels.

Matt - I think Matt is actually like super into hair care products. Like to the point that he is the one that his friends go to and are like "What should I use for /my/ hair?" and Matt is like hand on head immediately to figure out what would be best. (He does this to Andrew "ONCE" and for the rest of all time he remembers to ask.)

He doesn't give as much of a shit about styling other people's hair like Allison but like in terms of treatments / general maintenance there is no one better. Like Renee's hair needs a deep condition because she just re-did her dye job? Matt knows exactly which one she should be using. Nicky's hair isn't handling dry heat very well? Matt's coming in hot with the hot oil suggestion. Neil, upon everyone's demands, decides to stop using the 3-in-1 (Bodywash, shampoo, conditioner) and Matt is beside himself on his recommended next steps for his best bro getting healthy luscious hair (he so wants to tousle the curls he KNOWS Neil would have if his hair wasn't fucked to high heaven by over a decade of 3-in-1)

Touch and eye contact are the Sterek trademarks. It's always heavy, intense eye contact, and different ways that they touch each other.

Season 1 and 2, it's very tentative. Derek takes Stiles' hand for help up off the ground (and the gentle face touching!!), the infamous wall push happens (which is very gentle, honestly, like Derek does not hurt Stiles.)

Derek reacts badly when a boundary is broken. Stiles makes him strip, Derek pushes his head against the steering wheel.

By the time season 3 comes along, they're very casual with one another. Winking, smirking, Derek reaching out and grabbing Stiles, Stiles grabbing Derek's wrist.

It's insane. Season 3 happens 3 or 3 months after season 2, and they are already comfortable with each other. Relaxed. And it's not shocking to anybody BUT Scott; Peter is visibly amused by their antics.

All of this potential is why there's a billion fics about what happened during the summer break.

part of the reason people love season 3 so much isn't because of the plot. it's because the show founds it's grove with the characters which enhanced the plot. they're established with not only the audience but with each other. they're able to play off each other in various ways that they couldn't in the previous 2 seasons.

derek and stiles in s3 and 4 had gotten to a place where they could be playful and understand each other with just intense eye contact (horny, horny eye contact).

smoke and mirrors with them in the back of the van trying to help liam? peak sterek behavior.

stiles learns derek's boundaries without some trite conversation about it and derek only retaliates for the most egregious one in wolf's bane and it makes sense as to why derek reacted that way. "you know what that was for" indeed.

stiles's finger taps in currents is a call back to the moment in shape shifted. he is silently asking to touch derek to offer comfort and support in a moment of sorrow. boyd having been killed and derek's body being used as the weapon against his will. there is nothing stiles can do for boyd in that moment but he isn't too late to help derek.

derek's absence fucks stiles up in s5. he is emotionally rocked by losing someone who he has this kind of relationship with. someone who understands without him having to verbalize. they got each other.

than derek's just gone.

(though i will never be convinced stiles wasn't blowing up derek's phone with memes at 2am).

it definitely flies under the radar in tattoo. there's a whole little subtextual plotline where scott realizes derek and stiles are not only friendly but clearly have been working together over the summer.

it's part of why scott starts to remove the stick from his ass about derek so that by frayed he's messed up at derek's supposed death.

like, stiles gets defensive on derek's behalf when scott brings up going to him about his tattoo problem pointing out derek's had his hands full in looking for erica and boyd over the intervening months.

i genuinely don't think scott knew what had occurred with erica and boyd. i don't think he was expressly told. allison probably didn't tell him out of shame and derek didn't want to involve him. stiles kept it to himself too and instead worked with derek. scott was pointedly kept out of the loop.

in tattoo you also have derek tracking stiles around the room with his eyes for a billon seconds for no reason.

the casual titty grab way derek stops stiles from leaving.

the ending when scott discovers the painted over alpha pack symbol and that whole everything. scott realizes that no only was stiles helping derek without him know but also withheld knowing about the alpha pack. stiles isn't surprised and is in the background awkwardly trying not to draw attention to himself. isaac wakes up before scott can question him.

it's top 10 anime betrayals.

and chaos rising -- a whole episode later -- there's the fisting jokes, and the bank heist planning and scott being like "in front of my salad" while peter is amused in the background because peter's been seeing this behavior for weeks now and isn't surprised.

tl:dr stiles and derek genuinely are friends by season 3 and we know what they did over the summer. the show just doesn't bother to beat you over the head with it because there's enough context clues to tell you.

M3gan and a lonely child

M3GAN, directed by Gerald Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper, is a great little horror film — it’s funny, it’s freaky, it’s well-paced, and obviously M3gan herself is a really great character who’s already had a lot of impact in memes and pop culture.

Cady (Violet McGraw), a quiet and self-effacing little girl, is orphaned when her parents are killed in a car accident, after which she’s sent to live with her Aunt Gemma (Allison Williams). Her aunt, a workaholic engineer at a famous toy company, pairs Cady up with the newest toy in development — M3GAN, standing for Model 3 Generative Android, a life-sized human doll that uses AI learning models to engage with, teach, care for, and otherwise be a companion to the children she’s paired with. M3GAN (played by Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) spends time with Cady while Gemma focuses for the majority of the film on her work, not realising that she’s neglecting Cady’s emotional needs or that M3gan’s learning model is more dangerous than she anticipated.

One thing I didn’t expect going into it was how much the central politics of the film would hit me and how hard — M3GAN throughout shows you a deeply unhappy, lonely little girl, and step-by-step goes through what has made her that way.

It would have been very easy for the film to basically treat M3GAN as a metaphor for the terrors of “screentime”, and how too much screentime harms a child — it stunts their growth! They become too used to screens! They become lonely and sad!

I don’t disagree that too much time using screens can be detrimental to anyone’s life and development, but it can’t be denied that screentime is frequently used as a boogeyman to distract from the real issue: that many caregivers give their children TV, computers, or their phones, because they don’t want to waste their time interacting with them. Children are stranded with screens and technology because their parents are busy, or tired, or just want them to be quiet. The technology itself is not the problem, but the desire to put this technology in your child’s hands and then walk away or mentally disengage so that you can do something else.

While there are a few moments in the film where Gemma (Allison Williams) treats M3gan with the casual disregard she might do an iPad, the core of most of the film is in that M3gan is making Cady feel cared for, which nobody else does.

Before I dig in, according to the NSPCC, these are the four main forms of child neglect:

Physical neglect. A child’s basic needs, such as food, clothing or shelter, are not met or they aren’t properly supervised or kept safe.

Educational neglect. A parent doesn’t ensure their child is given an education.

Emotional neglect. A child doesn’t get the nurture and stimulation they need. This could be through ignoring, humiliating, intimidating or isolating them.

Medical neglect. A child isn’t given proper health care. This includes dental care and refusing or ignoring medical recommendations.

Apart from medical neglect, in the course of M3gan, Cady experiences all of these forms of neglect from Gemma, and potentially from her parents as well. As well as Cady, a boy called Brandon (Cady’s bully who is killed by M3gan) also appears to be neglected by his mother, and Dewey the dog is also heavily neglected and not given appropriate care as a pet by Celia, Gemma’s neighbour.

The whole film is about desires to replace the basic responsibilities of caregiving with various alternatives, and also about avoiding the basic responsibilities of other relationships with each other and our communities.

M3gan’s not the cause of any of these, but a symptom, and a catalyst for their being shown more obviously.

19 Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why? 

Bucky Barnes is both easy and hard. Partly because I based my early Bucky (in Widow’s Tale) on the comics version, then tried to shoehorn that character to fit the MCU characterization. (Note to self: Never do that. MCU has butchered a number of characters over the course of the movies’ run, Bucky being key among them.) I finally managed to get a good handle on Bucky in Hands of Clay (domestic modern dad guy)... only to run up against a wall to try to forget all of that when writing Hour of the Wolf (traumatized time travelling werewolf). 

But does that stop me? No.  

23 If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it? 

I did a bit of this with Dawning Light back in the day, played around with what it would be like for Dawn to have fallen through the portal into the Supernatural world (first and second). Dean Winchester as a surprised adoptive dad to a hyper-smart five-year-old would have put a very interesting twist on things.  

But for other fics... it would be interesting to remix Hands of Clay to have Steve be Natasha’s dad, and Bucky having adopted Clint. Or in Hour of the Wolf, to have a few different scenarios - such as Allison going back in time to when she was eight years old and Kate about to kill the Hale family (this story, of course, gets the delightful moniker of Tween Wolf), or in the original story Chris finding out about Allison’s real lineage when Allison was a year old and dropping her on the closet available doorstep (the Stilinskis’, obviously) so Allison and Stiles could grow up as real siblings (making what Allison did to Derek in the future So Much Worse for everyone involved). 

I can write fanfic of my own fanfic any day of the week.

rhaenyra and alicent are not the same age. alicent is older than rhaenyra and she was not against the marriage with her father at first. it wasn't until aegon was born the relationship began to sour.

rhaenyra's claim to the throne is in her mind and the mind of many, solid as viserys word, who they know never backed up. she sees the acts of the greens and aegon as treason and a form of kintrap.

the death of her daughter visenya, losing her due the trauma of losing her throne and her father causes her to consider war. lucerys' attack and death solifies in her mind that this is the only way to regain her right.

mysaria is her unofficial mistress of whispers and does not mind her and daemon's relationship. their dynamic would be one I would love to explore.

an au where she is able to succeed as queen can be done if anyone is interested.

like in the books, the age difference between her and her uncle, while a good amount, is not that noticable. and per targaryen tradition, it was not seen as wrong, except for viserys who did not want daemon close to rhaenyra once she became heir.

I just read a Sterek fic where Derek was already a True Alpha before the movie was even a thing that happened. I do not want to be accusatory, but do you have anymore instances of the writers taking ideas from fanfiction? Because there are so many stories where Derek stays an alpha even though the show tried to portray him as an incompetent one, and that seems to be the source of conflict among Scott Stans & Shippers who don't respect Scott. https://archiveofourown.org/works/28209924/chapters/69127125

i'm hesitant and wary to say they copied fanfic because that's really hard to prove and most creator's avoid it for legal reasons. however, given the history of teen wolf's interaction with and use of fandom i wouldn't be surprised if there was at minimum a cursory gander at what were the popular theories amongst fandom.

teen wolf still has an official tumblr after all.

off the top of my head stiles being possessed was a pretty hot idea amongst fandom back in 2012 because there was so much overlap between supernatural and teen wolf fans.

derek being a mechanic was pretty popular amongst au's but i'm sure jeff davis also saw the same photoshoot the rest of us did and probably had the same feelings about it.

derek remaining an alpha or becoming an alpha again is also super popular amongst fandom -- especially sterek fandom -- to this day.

personally, i think jeff always planned for derek to become an alpha again at some point but hoechlin left the show so derek's arc closed with him becoming an evolved werewolf and being triumphant over kate. derek wasn't so much incompetent (despite deaton's view) and more so inexperienced.

the failwolf accusations came from fandom making jokes and than it turning into some kind of ascended meme combined with a lot of fanon flanderization of derek's character.

i think people overlook the aspect of derek's arc where he has to overcome peter's influence over his ideas of power and control just as allison had to overcome gerard and kate's influence on her life. parallels parallels parallels y'all.

scott is a surprisingly divisive topic in fandom and derek and scott's relationship even more-so. it's messy and complicated. they both project a lot of their issues onto each other and it's part of their growth that they gradually overcome this.

i'm someone who likes scott. he's not perfect like some say. he doesn't always get his way like some seem to think. he fails a lot too. scott mccall is a messy bitch and the narrative does show that but like teen wolf's writing isn't the strongest.

it's one thing to not like scott. i can respect that. you're not always going to vibe and click with every character. i do, however, think there are those who do it in bad faith and are just downright rude.

people want to put derek and scott in competition. the only person who ever competed with derek was stiles fucking stilinksi in season 1 when he got in his feelings about derek teaching scott.

but really -- jeff wrote that movie by the seat of his pants because it in no way accounted for the two most central characters to the nogitsune plot wouldn't return. the whole thing waffled without stiles and kira being present. i don't necessarily put the blame on him entirely as i'm sure he was under time constraints by the studio.

you don't do two seasons of your six season show on the importance of stiles stilinski and than be able to have a functional narrative without him. scott mccall as a character doesn't make sense without his other half -- who is not allison.

but i think jeff really meant something with derek making the sacrifice to stop the nogtisune and "dying" in fire on top of the nemeton thereby earning alpha status again. i have theories about it bro.

Least favorite canon thing about this character? i wish they would drop the allison/luther relationship, obviously. i almost immediately stopped reading the comics when i realized it started with a rumor to begin with. i generally like everything about his character, flaws and alls, but that plot point really kills me for obvious reasons. i used to at least be able to enjoy their friendship but season 3 really killed that.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them? my luther playlist is so long, and i made an edit once upon a time with a few of my favorites, but false confidence by noah kahan is one i usually think of first!

What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise? i could go on and on, but i'll try to only list a few. the biggest one for me is the use of any ableist nicknames. calling him a monkey man, especially, really bugs me considering his body dysmorphia + the fact that the body alteration was done without his consent. the "he won't shut up about the moon" memes, etc don't make any sense to me...? he was literally sent to, basically, solitary confinement on the moon for 4+ years (in which he was already depressed + self harming before the first year was even up, as we see in season 3) because his abuser was scared he was finally going to leave and he needed to keep his weapon handy. i also hate the way people associate his lack of social awareness with "being stupid."

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character? i have a lot but i'll name a few off the top of my head: we know that luther wrote poems about comets, but i've always liked the idea of him writing poems for his siblings while he was on the moon, too, as a way to process being away from them, especially as his feelings of resentment for them leaving eventually turn into longing to be with them. i also like the idea that his music collection is so big because he got really into music once his family left, because he was so used to the constant background music of viktor playing his violin that he needed something to fill the silence (+ for many other reasons too, obviously).

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter? bringing my luther + lila agenda here because there are so many direct parallels between them that after 2x10, when he told her "love shouldn't have to hurt this much," i was certain they were going to capitalize on those parallels afterwards, but we didn't really get any. i don't think their personalities necessarily mesh, but luther knows all about acting as your abuser's weapon and trying to come to terms with what that relationship really was. i was also such a fan of his relationship with elliot 😌
