So, you’ve just started year 12 and you have no clue what you’re doing, that is FINE but here a few little things I learnt in year 12!

Change Subjects and start with four

When I started I was taking maths, further maths, physics and English during my few week stint of wanting to be an astrophysicist. You usually have a few weeks at the beginning of the year with people moving classes, changing subjects and dropping them and take advantage of this!!! I wish I had tried out something like history because I really grew to hate physics and dropped it in November year 12. I suggest taking four and seeing if you can handle the work, and it gives you a bit of wiggle room if you really don’t like something because you can drop a fourth subject at any time.

Take notes throughout the year

May seem a bit obvious, but especially with the abolishment of AS levels you’re not going to have public exams at the end of the year and may not see the point in taking notes, but you will have mocks in the summer and you will have to revise in year 13 and legible, useful notes from all your lessons throughout the year are the key to this

Go out

Don’t feel you can’t go out or like you don’t want to. For months I didn’t really go out on friday or saturday nights and this just resulted in me suddenly binging on going out and partying and then my acedemics really fell, so go out at weekends throughout the year

Invite people over

Making friends at a big school, or a small one, and with new people in general is hard. Invite a few people over, get your friends to invite their new friends too, and just have a nice chill evening you don’t need a raging party but just have few beers and listen to some nice music. p.s Fairy lights help set the mood

If you have any clue what you want to do just do it!!

I cannot stress this enough, but even though I toyed with the idea of physics I did know that it was English my heart truly desires and I sorta wish I had done subjects more relevant to that, or started doing reading for my personal statement earlier. If you like something just do it and don’t stop

Free periods

Honestly, I am not even going to tell you to use your frees because I know you won’t and I don’t think you really need to. If you only slept a few hours last night for whatever reason, essays, Game of Thrones, concrete mermaid evidence in the dark space of youtube, then have a nap in your frees. Go for a long sit down lunch with your friends, go home if you can and carry on the netflix marathon for a while. I like finding a nice chair and reading for a lil while, or going home to a cuppa’.

Get some friends who are smarter than you

It will challenge you to intellectually keep up with their conversations, and if you struggle staying on the good, motivated, organised path they can be super helpful.

Read

Just read, whatever it is, it will better you as a person

Apply for extra stuff

There are loads of summer schools, essay competitions, internships etc that have deadlines in the middle of year 12 so apply quick

English Literature NEA (Help!)

For my Alevel English Literature I’ve got to pick two texts (prose, poetry or play) one of which has to be pre-1900. I’ve then got to pick a question and write a 2,500 word essay on a certain theme within these two texts.

I’m really not sure where to even start looking really so if anyone has any kind of experience in this kind of thing then please let me know! I’d be super grateful for any advice or recommendations.
