I'd just like to sit in a tree where I wont be noticed so I can sip my coffee from my wineglass in peace and annotate my battered second hand copy of the Iliad for the tenth time, is that rEALLY too much to ask??

Any shadowhunter fans here??
↠ CHAIN OF IRON RATING: ★★★☆☆
oh no, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I was expecting to, and I'm sad 😭🤧
My main issue is that NOTHING HAPPENS in this book, I was so bored. Any character or relationship progression that we did have in this book, for some reason, fell apart by the end. We spent so long in this book watching all of the character's relationships grow, only for them to go back to square one? It's so irritating.
Another thing, I just wasn't invested in the characters or the storyline. The only character I actually cared for is Matthew. Istg the main character could've died in this book, and I would not have cared. At all. 😩
In my opinion, Cassandra Clare is trying to do wayy too much. There are too many characters, too many plot lines, and not enough time dedicated to each character. Like there are 12 characters, each with their individual plotlines, PLUS the overarching plotline..... There's just not enough space for each character to grow and develop in the way that they need to. I think CC is trying to do too much with this trilogy?

sometime annotations are serious and important and other times they’re how you scream into the void

I don't know how people annotate books they read on the first run through— I usually just read through stuff first and make a mental note of interesting things. And then I go back and highlight quotes or lines so I can reference them later.
I'm not a big fan of writing while I read because it breaks my concentration, but I don't think my English professor cares too much about that when she tells me to annotate a 65 page text.

12.04.2021 - I was ill all weekend so very little progress on anything but reading... I did finish Small Gods and Lady Windermere's Fan though!
I forgot to take photos of my work today, oops. However, I did write another 1,000 words of my essay, which I'm happy with.
This afternoon I'm just reading and writing some reviews in my reading journal, as usual... I've also polished off a whole box of Mr Kipling's Viennese Whirls, I should feel bad because CALORIES but I really don't care!
Currently reading: What Matters in Jane Austen by John Mullen; Emma by Jane Austen

Click for quality :) All the study tabs! I am getting really into this book called ‘Turn-taking in Shakespeare’. If you’re interested in speaking, how we speak, how that translates into dialogue in plays, and a new take on Shakespeare, I would highly recommend it!

I love annotating stories I really enjoyed reading. I studied English literature in high school and the enjoyment of thinking and giving an opinion on why that happened or what the plot/character meant is so fun and has never left me!
I especially love doing it to stories I read months or even years before, and then coming back to it with more experience....even relearning the plot then can open my mind to missed things.
I still go over my Advanced English notes from school. Sylvia Plath was one fucked up woman!

21.03.2021 - I've finally reorganised my Tolkien bookcase! I'm not 100% happy but it's working for me a lot better than it was before I started. I think my main issue is the small stack of the HoME series... I guess I've got a good excuse to buy some more of them then! I have a shelf by shelf breakdown if you're interested (I'll link it when I'm back on my laptop)
Otherwise, I've taken it easy today, mainly reading and annotating the Return of the King with some wine and fudge (no I wasn't day drinking, we're not there just yet!) I'm enjoying this annotation reread so much, I don't want to finish it... However, when that sad say comes I might jump into annotating The Silmarillion and, eventually, move onto the three Great Tales? I definitely want to annotate Beren and Lúthien at some point at least!
