A bit of a critical (maybe controversial?) post of mine

The Kung Fu Panda 4 trailer has dropped and...people already have issues with Zhen's (Awkwafina) character design.

I know that it is just a trailer and that we shouldn't judge it critically. But with what we see so far, I'd like to share my thoughts on the designs and I'd say the designs would not affect the characters and story as a whole. And I've been a fan of this franchise since I was 4, so I have some ideas of how Dreamworks designs their characters for this franchise, and for this reason, I might be a bit TOO critical, so..sorry in advance (all opinions). And this is not a diss for the people who worked on this movie, I just want to share my thoughts and many others about Zhen's design. People are already talking about the fact that her design doesn't feel like it belongs in a franchise like KFP; a franchise known for its artistically crafted designs of animal characters. Comparing it to the likes of "Sing" characters or calling it "boring". And, I can see why.

Comparing her with the other wolf/feline animals, she lacks the details and, most importantly, a distinction of what animal she represents. Looking at the other three, even without prior knowledge of their names, I can already tell that she's a tiger, he's a leopard, and the last one is a wolf. While with Zhen...I honestly thought she was a wolf, but apparently, she's a fox.

In my opinion, they weren't able to translate well what animal she was supposed to be. This is not to say that Dreamworks can't make new designs that align with the universe of KFP.

For example, Chameleon. When I look at her, I can tell she's a chameleon- with her yellow eyes, thin iris, scaley body, and small stature. While for Zhen, her stance doesn't invoke fox, at least to me. If you see her as such, then good for you, maybe I'm just an idiot :p In the end, these are all my thoughts and opinions on her design, not her character. I love this franchise and I can't wait what they'll do with the new film. Aside from my opinions of the casting choice of Awkwafina and her character's design, I'm still eager to know what Zhen brings to the table of Kung Fu Panda. And that if she's a worthy successor of being the Dragon Warrior.

I'm tired of watching creators get stepped on (with a clarified statement regarding the forum poster)

I don't frequent this forum - I went here to investigate pirating. Several people have insisted that the person going by the COG founder's name is not actually him, so here's my updated post. I retract that it's Dan but not what else I said. I still stand by what I said.

Hi, it's me, your friendly Vi with something on my mind. Unfollow if you will but I gotta speak my mind on behalf of the authors who spend countless hours creating the games that bring you joy. Sure, I've been away from Tumblr so I'm probably late to this but oh well. Still decided to post this.

I moved my game to Twine in August because I don't want to be associated with Choice of Games (COG). Here's a great example of why...

People in a forum asking for and sharing pirated content from indie creators' Patreons.

The author saw it and responded:

My hands are trembling as I right this, because I'm both hurt and stunned that someone would take *everything* from my Patreon and post it. If you ever want - redacted game name - to get finished, then try not to do things that will cause me to have a breakdown. Please. /ID]

Here's the response from someone going by COG's founder's name (per screenshots below - apparently it's not him but I do wonder why he lets someone use his name or isn't aware?):

"Let me tell you something, those who haven't subscribed to your patreon isn't magically gonna subscribe if they don't get stories elsewhere, and those who have already did that means they care about you and I'm pretty damn sure they aren't gonna unsubscribe anytime soon. If something anything changes due to the leaks then it's your popularity, readers are gonna be more interested in your titles and perhaps once they have enough money then they can even subscribe and donate that money to you, right now many members of this forum don't have enough resources to purchase things online such as patreon subscription, hence they had to rely on leaks to sate their excitement of reading the stories. What I said originally when I thought it was Dan: The guy is probably a millionaire (or, at the very least, well off compared to most indie creators) and he has the nerve to create an entitled response like this to an INDIE AUTHOR who uses choicescript.... wow. To an author who yes, has a pretty good following but is spending 1000s of hours creating for the enjoyment of others.

New statement: It's still fucking the way this person is speaking to an indie author. Still seems odd to allow a forum to use your name (and also basically insinuate it is supported by your company)...I would certainly be angry. But then again, I'm not rich and living off indie authors' work.

He (still) has more money than most of us indie authors ever have in his pocket from creating a company that pays pennies to the writers who make it money. People who just rely on passion to create these stories. Even if you make money on Patreon, most people cannot be sustained full-time. Most of the pirated content is not from bigger authors (but some is).

And before anyone says anything, yes, I am aware that many people can't afford Patreon and "don't want to wait." I get it. I promise you, I know the struggle. But like, it's fucking entitled to think you deserve to read someone's work without their permission.

And it's fucking entitled to throw the authors that pay for your lifestyle under the bus. (I still believe the company does this).

I am SO grateful to the majority of you out there who are kind, supportive, and overall amazing. But this is not okay!

Rui's current 4*s worst to best in my opinion (is this a bad idea right now considering he has an event soon and will, shock horror, likely get a card in his event? yeah probably. would it be wiser to wait until after? yeah probably)

i find this card overrated as hell. the hair is ugly and the outfit is only slightly less ugly. he looks really off to me. the best part about this card is the windows cause they're pretty

i love the concept of this card but again, i think Rui himself looks a bit off in it (probably the point of his expression but yeah) not the biggest fan of the fit. lighting's great. untrained's better

not very interesting. not a fan of the outfit. he should have glasses more often though. untrained is better part two

again, it's just a bit boring. i do quite like the outfit it comes with though

cute but not much else

pretty but quite bland. Emu's 3* from the same event was more visually interesting

i LOVE this event story but Rui himself is my least favourite 4* in its gacha (i swear he is my favourite character)

i think it's very him. love all the lights

putting aside event controversy, the card itself is quite nice indeed. the steampunk vibe suits him perfectly

onto cards i actually really like!! i adore jellyfish so of course i find this one really pretty. i think the outfit looks lovely in the actual card but not so much on the 3D model

sorcerer Rui!! i love the hairstyle that comes with this one. might try and get it if i don't spend all my crystals trying to get his bestie's Valentine's one

what really makes this card is the tiny versions of the other W x Sers xchfrnodcgfesmkf okay i love all the cute faces on the decorations though. looks like a puppet show

i sparked for this card </3 worth it i think!! the outfit's amazing. the carousel that represents W x S (?) is nice

might just be cause it's currently rather new but i just like it <3 the lightbulbs are lovely

i really love the lighting on it and i think the outfit's great. again, might be the somewhat-new-bias

Oh boy, now some things I disliked. Some strongly. Sab s2 was a speed run, yes, and sometimes the plot suffered for it. Mostly, I'm mad about the things that were taken away. Nina was done so dirty. She had the Nina personality and was iconic as usual, but I wish they had used more of her instead of her just...being there and talking about Matthias. She has an amazing personality and a lot of plot armor. Yet, they don't utilize that!

We were robbed of ninej as well. I was so excited for Ninej, and we got like two conversations. I want them to have a strong budding friendship, what happened to her flinching when Nina hugs her? Which could have helped with the lack of Inej trauma addressed this season as well. They were so fucking cute together I needed more. Don't get me started on poor Matthias getting like 10 minutes of screen time. I feel bad for him, but that was a mild complaint because what else is he supposed to do this season y'know?

I was mad at the speed run for Nikolina. They literally put all their iconic lines and scenes that were built up and formed of their relationship developing, and shoved them a into one conversation. They made Alina like him right from the start, and I just feel like in general they needed to flesh out Nikolai like a LOT. He was perfect, emanated Nikolai energy, he just needed more chances to prove that!

The erasure of Jesper's crush on Kaz and the Wesper speed run. Oh boy. Okay buckle up. I thought they didn't build up Wesper well enough, and they made them together for the fan service. I wish they had just made them friends or allies this season. Maybe Wylan was crushing on him a little, but I wanted that banter that they had in Soc. Jesper teasing him was great! This season I wished they had spent a lot more time on Jesper's crush on Kaz. Kit Young and Freddy Carter like to pretend it doesn't exist but it does. And I, (a biased Kazper shipper), really would have loved to see it in its early stages. For Inej and Jesper to bond over it and the utter angst in their scenes because Jes knows he won't like him like he likes her. They seriously cut all of that out, and made Jes say they were brothers which is not true. Kaz sees him as a brother, and it just takes out the whole impact of the Jordie line in CK.

Tolya and Inej better not-*sigh* not getting into that.. David I refuse to believe he is dead. He is a part of the Triumvirate, and he was supposed to get married to Genya before DYING. She cannot catch a freaking break.

I also didn't like how the Spinning Wheel was lame. Like, it was supposed to be in the sky. Buried in the mountains. Instead it's like a small mansion in the ground. The sea whip fetter was kind of lame too. Genya's scars could have been better, and so should the Darkling's Sharpie-drawn scars. One thing I just wish could happen is to show Jesper and Nina being bisexual. Like, at this point, people would think Jes is gay and Nina is straight. Is it too much to ask for them both to show their interest in women?

We didn't get lines like "I am not ruined, I am ruination. " and the iconic "i am become a blade. " I have hopes for s3 though. Flaws and all, I love SAB and I have faith in them to give us a good s3 and Six of Crows.

Ok for people who watched FX’s The Bear

I’ve seen a lot of people who ship Carmy and Syd, and even tho I do like the ship, I felt like she had more potential romantic interest with Marcus??

The way Carmy and Syd interact is more in a deep mutual respect and admiration for one another turned friendship (which could always turn into something more, again, I’m not opposed to the ship at all) whereas for Syd and Marcus, I felt that they had more of a friend and maybe more connection. Every moment between them felt very tender and without tension, and honestly, for someone who has male siblings, their interactions were not on a “sibling level” at all. More friendship/crush sort of.

SU it’s a show all about diversity, body types and designs, so it could have been a great opportunity to get some rep for other genders (trans, fluid, agender), not saying is bad that they went with all female route, but I just feel it was a huge miss for an amazing opportunity to represent more less know identities

I agree! I'm not reading comments on Twitter about this for this very reason (I've actually stopped in general and it's great. The fact is that what does it matter what Twitter User 592356 thinks about the RF... it doesn't haha).

I get why people disagree, I really do! Three homes is objectively a lot of homes. But I always remember that I chose to be a fan of and support members of the Royal Family. And they don't live the way I do. I've made peace with that but I understand people feel differently.

I follow them to follow their interesting engagements and interesting lives and tbh this is just another part of their interesting life for me. I'm excited to see what this move brings and I've had fun looking into the school. It looks like exactly the kind of place William and Kate would want for their kids. It's new chapter for us to be a part of!

Personally I'd say don't still from CoG either. I don't care if you don't like whatever company you're stealing from, or if you think they can afford, or if you think you're fighting "the system" in some way. Stealing, with some exceptions, is wrong. If you wanna go after CoG or any other company do it honestly

I don't disagree, anon, and I don't advocate it. While I don't care for corporate greed, I do care about the authors who are harmed in either instance. I just think, when possible, to support the creators directly, which is not necessarily monetarily. The likes, reblogs, comments, and informing others help immensely.

listen like. people are totally entitled to their opinions and criticisms of the pjo show but. sometimes it’s just hard to hear/read. I know the show isn’t perfect but seeing the cast & producers talk about it and seeing the level of love and excitement theyve put into the work, idk, I feel for them having people tear it to shreds. criticising the author himself for not adapting it well when he’s doing something different with a new medium, saying they’re sorry for the kids who love the books but have to act in this “terrible” show as if these kids aren’t THRILLED by the opportunity and just so committed to giving the show their best.

again totally valid criticisms & opinions!! but you win some and lose some in an adaptation. eg. trying to expand on themes, keep a consistent tone, appeal to a broader audience (including those of us who loved the books as kids but are now!!! adults!!!), keep within budget, etc etc all these things involve some trade offs. sure some of the humour and goofiness has been lost but we also get amazing beautifully acted scenes that really expand on core themes of family or who is a monster etc etc.

speaking on a personal level I have had a hard time these past few months and this show became a genuine escape, a way for me to connect with my sister watching the episodes together, a rediscovery of my inner 12 year old who waited so long for this. and I know there are people who are like me and they had certain expectations and that’s why they’re disappointed and that’s so valid, but it’s a lot of negativity sometimes, & I just wish we could give a little grace bc making a creative thing is hard, and pleasing everyone with that creative thing is impossible, and most of all, maybe we could revel a little bit more in this unique complex piece of work that lots of people poured their hearts into with nothing but the best of intentions.

I can't do a more deep opinion on this orca thing because yeah one can say "go orcas!", it feels good, doesn't it?...

but in fact those must be very scattered cases that won't change the fact that the current situation is that ocean transport is noisy, it's everywhere, and it must be driving these very, very sensitive animals crazy. Before motors, a whale could listen to what was happening in South Africa from the Argentine coast. Now their range of communication must have dropped to only a few kilometers: moreover, all the noise must be insane. There have been studies saying that even things like lawnmowers can make permanent ear damage to small rodents, and birds have had to adapt to city noises (their songs changed to a more "natural" pattern during the pandemic lockdowns) So I can't imagine what such things must be doing to the minds of orcas, one of the animals with the most complex and intelligent behavior registered outside of primates, and extremely sensitive to sound. Can we even understand what they're going through right now.

And this is not to mention the widespread whale (baleen whales, not orcas) hunting that decimated their populations to an absurd degree. All the world is currently going through a beyond worrying trend of defaunation, but whales were particulary hurt. There were 250.000 (estimated) blue whales before whaling, and they were decimated to less than 2000. Even today, with strict conservation measures, there's around 10-25k blue whales, and that's one species. Let that sink in.

Is there a solution to this, besides returning to the age of sail and banning ocean explotation? I don't know, there might be. I hope there is.

When I read about orcas, about their behavior, about their pods with their own almost cultural quirks and even dialects, so much we don't know about them, I only remember Arthur C. Clarke, when he spoke about blue whales: “We do not know the true nature of the entities we are destroying”

this is SO hard to answer, because so many of the characters are, like, those pet adoption ads that say "MUST STAY TOGETHER, CANNOT BE SEPARATED". it's all about the relationship dynamics! and I think everybody in the main cast is pretty neat, honestly; there isn't anyone who doesn't have something I really like about them. but if I haaaaad to choose...

Hearts - Trey, partly because I do like me a good Mom Friend™ character, and partly because he pretends like he's all sane and normal, right up until he does something to prove he's just as much of a dipshit as everyone else. you're not immune, sir.

Savana - BUFF 👏 TSUNDERE 👏 WEREWOLF 👏

Octa - this one took a lot of soul-searching, because I do feel like the Octatrio is at their very best when it's all three of them, especially when they're in full Ed Edd n Eddy mode. but in the end, Jade ekes out a win, because sometimes you get this Jade:

Scara - Kalim, my sweet little moron. such a good heart, so few braincells.

Pome - 90% of the time when Rook shows up, you know it's going to a be fun time watching a silly little man dance around and break into song for no reason and wax poetic about the beauty of, like, a chair. always a delight!

except every once in a while, he'll bust out something that is absolutely insane even by Twst standards:

Igni - MUST STAY TOGETHER! CANNOT BE SEPARATED! ...but I would probably go with Ortho, just because right now I'm pretty invested in his Learning Emotions story arc and looking forward to seeing it progress. he's a good boy who will post your cringe fanfic publicly if you annoy him

...and at this point I'm calling technicality because the ask says "other dorms", and I genuinely do not think I could choose between the Dia boys at this point. let's see how episode 7 goes first!
