For vegans and vegetarians, getting enough omega-3 fatty acids can be a challenge. Unlike their animal-based counterparts, plant-based sources of omega-3s contain a different type of omega-3 called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which the body must convert into the more beneficial forms of omega-3s, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, with a little bit of planning, it's still possible for vegans and vegetarians to meet their omega-3 needs. Here are some of the best plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are one of the richest sources of plant-based omega-3s, with 1 tablespoon containing around 2.3 grams of ALA. Flaxseeds can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods, or used as a plant-based egg substitute in recipes.
Chia seeds
Chia seeds are another excellent source of plant-based omega-3s, with 1 tablespoon containing around 1.9 grams of ALA. Chia seeds can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or yogurt, or used to make chia pudding.
Hemp seeds
Hemp seeds are a nutritious source of omega-3s, with 1 tablespoon containing around 0.6 grams of ALA. Hemp seeds can be added to smoothies, salads, or sprinkled on top of roasted vegetables.
Walnuts
Walnuts are not only a great source of healthy fats, but they also contain omega-3s, with 1 ounce (about 14 halves) containing around 2.6 grams of ALA. Walnuts can be eaten as a snack, added to salads, or used as a crunchy topping for oatmeal or yogurt.
Soybeans
Soybeans are a versatile legume that can be used in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries to salads. They also contain omega-3s, with 1 cup of cooked soybeans containing around 0.5 grams of ALA.
Brussels sprouts
Brussels sprouts are a nutrient-dense vegetable that's also a surprising source of omega-3s, with 1 cup of cooked Brussels sprouts containing around 0.1 grams of ALA. Brussels sprouts can be roasted, sautéed, or used in salads.
Spinach
Spinach is another nutrient-dense vegetable that's also a source of omega-3s, with 1 cup of cooked spinach containing around 0.4 grams of ALA. Spinach can be used in salads, smoothies, or sautéed as a side dish.

Chia seeds are a great source of omega 3s, omegas are great for heart health and should be included in the diet daily if possible! The top sources of omegas on a vegan diet are flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts. I include one (at least a tsp) of these in my breakfasts almost every day! They are great for digestion and bowel movement, as it lubricates the intestinal  tract reliving symptoms of constipation. ~~~ They are extremely beneficial when sprouted then grounded as it helps absorb nutrition, as posed to having them whole. ~~~ Once the seeds are grounded they begin to lose their potency, and need to be refrigerated! ~~~ It is recommended to  buy organic as they are heavily sprayed. ~~~ Flaxseeds contain high levels of Mucilage gum which is a gel like forming fiber that is water soluble, it moves slowly through the gut without it being digested, thereby making it easier to absorb nutrients. ~~~ Mucilage keeps food in the stomach making you feel satisfied for a longer period of time, it can indirectly aid in weight loss. ~~~ Benefits of flaxseeds: • Brain health • Gut health ( detoxifying, relieve constipation) • Diabetes management • May help in lower the risk of heart disease. ~~~ Flaxseeds have found to benefit and strengthen hair by providing extra conditioning that repairs damage, due to the nutrients found within it. . . ~~~ To make flaxseed gel you will need: • 200g flaxseeds • 500ml of water ~~~ Put both water and flaxseeds into a saucepan, on a medium heat gently simmering whilst stirring constantly, once boiled frothy gel forms, remove from the heat. It starts to thicken on it's own as it cools. After cooling for 40 minutes  strain to remove seeds. Store in an airtight container and refrigerate.
