Okay so I have a lot about them in my pinned post (and fics!) but basically this takes place in a small town in Kentucky (Dixon, Kentucky to be specific) in 2014 when Nathan and Des were on break for college and came back to Nathan’s hometown for a couple weeks

So there’s Sammy, des, and Nathan (and they are all dating now :>) and Nathan and Sammy were childhood friends (more on them later) and des and Nathan met in college and have been dating for like a year or two when this takes place

So basically there is this serial killer (who me and @crossover-enthusiast have affectionately dubbed god boi) (picture below) and, like a fashion trend, he has made a comeback (back when they were like 12 he killed Sammy and Nathan’s friend Nico and chopped Sammy’s arm off and Was Never Caught™️)

Sammy is 24 (birthday is September 21, 1989) and he has two siblings, Sophia (17) and Al(12)! He is v protective of them and loves them very much and Al is very much a rebellious little shit (affectionate) and this very much worries Sammy. Him and Sophia have always been v close :> also Sophia got her love of softball from Sammy and has his old bat still! (He used to play when he was younger but alas The Forest) also he loves the stars and stargazing and has a telescope and sometimes him and Sophia and him and the boyfs go :> and after the events of AFWtP him and Al sometimes too :)

Nathan is 24, (birthday march 13 1990) and he is pretty introverted and quiet (basically the opposite of des lol) and him and Sammy have been friends since kindergarten! (Yes there was romantic tension when they were teens no they did not figure it out no I do not accept constructive criticism) he loves reading and books a lot and he has a lot of random knowledge because while he was in college he had a job at the library and sometimes just stopped to read books he thought were interesting. Also, he is a v good cook (again, opposite of des, who one time nearly burnt their dorm down in college because he forgot to add water to his instant ramen) and yeah he has 3 siblings (Marcus, 39, klara, 37, and Derek, 16!) also his relationship with his parents isn’t the best

Des is 24 (birthday may 31, 1990) and he is v extroverted and outgoing :> them and Nathan met in college and were roommates! I love him fr and they are everything to me :> also, they are a demiboy (he/they) and also v gnc and also 6’0 and ripped :> also he’s autistic (just like me fr) and absolutely loves kirby (tbh video games were the reason he got into coding in the first place) and he is so kdjjdhdhhsjsj

Okay, so. Blue Flame.

Time to talk about Astro’s long-awaited comeback! Good stuff first: visuals were ON POINT as they always are, everyone looked incredibly good (Sanha in particular personally killed me, I'm suing him, who allowed him to grow up this much, I cannot with that boy, take him away). I can't wait for a dance practice, I'm sure seeing the choreography in full will be just as much of a treat as it always is. 😍

HOWEVER. That said, I just... I wasn't... really feeling the concept this time around, tbh. Nothing about Blue Flame felt like “Astro” to me; it felt extremely generic, which is something I could never accuse Astro of being before. Blue Flame was exactly like the vast majority of other boy band comebacks that have come out this year: dark lighting with a few bright highlights to draw the eye; sexy, lingering, longing glamour shots; brief switch-ups to a brighter setting; generic MV props  peppered here and there like flowers, hothouse plants, hanging cloth, a dog, etc. etc. No, it’s not a “bad” MV, yes, it was still very aesthetic, but in a very safe, general way. Everything I’ve come to love and anticipate about Astro's comebacks just was just... completely absent. (Except for the rad choreo, of course, nothing in the world could ever make Astro's choreo bad.) That Special Something, that genuine spark of fun and joy and happiness that runs throughout their other MVs was nowhere to be found here at all. And I’m just... I’m not sure why; All Night proved that Astro could still do a more mature concept without sacrificing that upbeat and fun vibe, so why stop the good thing they had going there?

Even Always You, which was also an outlier when it came to Astro comeback aesthetics, had some really great symbolism and visual storytelling because of the circumstances behind its release and what Astro was going through at the time when it came to their company’s financial situation. So I still liked it even if it wasn't typically Fun and Fresh, because it was a song specifically for the fans that stayed despite the hard times, and it managed to tug at my heartstrings in a different way. Blue Flame, though? It’s just... generic sexy. That’s all it is. It’s not fun or playful or anything more than surface level Aesthetic™️. The members didn't even smile once in the MV. The most we got was a couple sexy smirks from Moonbin, and that's it. 😒

And like, if this MV was put out by any other group, even another one of my ults, I wouldn’t be bothering to write much if anything about it at all, because honestly, I just wouldn’t care that much either way. But Astro is one of my ult groups specifically because their stuff is so feel-good and fun and that’s what made them unique. Far be it from me to stifle their creativity if they want to experiment and try new things now that they're older, they can do whatever they please, but I hope they realize that one of the reasons they got so popular in the first place was because they made the "cute and fresh" concept actually work for them when no one else even bothered to try, and if they stopped that entirely, then a lot of their longtime fans would be very disappointed. ☹️ I really hope that they might do something like switch back and forth between concepts instead of abandoning Fun and Fresh entirely. “Again” wasn't exactly a super happy-fun song either, after all, and it was a title track, so... maybe that's what they're planning on doing, and their next release will be more upbeat like All Night was? I certainly hope so.

Like I said, I don't blame Astro/Fantagio for wanting to experiment and try new things, and maybe I'll feel differently after watching the MV a few more times and hearing other opinions on it, but for now, the biggest emotion I feel about Blue Flame after watching it through twice is "disappointed." I really wish I loved it right off the bat like I did All Night and so many of their other releases, but I just don't, and I would be doing myself a disservice if I wasn’t honest with myself about it. 😔
