Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out by Ryan Love - 3/5 stars
The Fate of Stars by SD Simper - DNF at pg 32
A Gathering Storm by Joanna Chambers - 4.75/5 stars
I kept getting the Madame Leota room from Haunted Mansion stuck in my head as I was reading this (not a bad thing!). This book has a surprisingly low rating on the Storygraph, and I'm not going to torture myself by looking at the reviews, but I'm assuming it's because of the power discrepancy between Ward and Nick. Clearly it didn't bother me as I really enjoyed the book!
Dionysus in Wisconsin by EH Lupton - 4.75/5 stars
At some point I might get tired of Mid-Century Modern romances, but not this day. This book was super fun, with an interesting world and lovely characters. And a Midwest setting! I've spent a lot of time in Madison, Wisconsin, where this book is set, so I got the added bonus of knowing most of the places pretty well. There was even a shoutout to an obscure piece of Madison history, the Lost City in the Arb. I have to get the second book in the series now!boy
Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan - 3.25/5 stars
I gave this book an extra quarter of a star for being written in 2003, when it would have been genuinely pretty groundbreaking. Reading it in 2024, it's very twee and pretty cringey (the queer utopia town would have been a magical fantasy in 2003, not so much now in a lot of places). When Levithan credited Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat books in the acknowledgements, I though, ah. No wonder. Hated those as a teen.
All that said, there's some genuinely lovely writing in this book, and it has its place in the queer canon.
The Greywacke by Nick Davidson - 5/5 stars
Super interesting nonfiction about the discipline of geology and how the early geologic epochs were figured out. Also gave me an idea for a historical romance about gay Victorian geologists.
Home Grown Talent by Joanna Chambers & Sally Malcolm - 5/5 stars
I think I loved this one more than the first in the series. The social media scandal was perfect, in that it was exactly as absurd as every social media scandal is, and thus hilarious, but also chilling in how even something so stupid can ruin people's lives.
The First Bright Thing by JR Dawson - DNF at pg 1
Prince of the Sorrows by Kellen Graves - DNF at pg 30
Reuben's Hot & Cold by M Arbon - 3/5 stars
Slight Foxing Around the Edges by Melissa Polk - DNF at pg 132
Restored by Joanna Chambers - 5/5 stars
Balefire by Jordan L Hawk - 4.75/5 stars
A Rulebook for Restless Rogues by Jess Everlee - 4/5 stars
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley - 5/5 stars
See my brain vomit about this book here. If you've been around here for any amount of time you know all Natasha Pulley's books make me feral. Absolutely no exception here. I cannot believe her first UK publisher dropped her over this book. Idiots! It's wonderful just like everything she's ever written.
In the Case of Heartbreak by Courtney Kaye - DNF at pg 181
The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason - DNF at pg 21
The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun - 5/5 stars (reread)
Just as good as the first time I read it!
Exhalation by Ted Chiang - 4.5/5 stars
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic - DNF at pg 84
Crisped + Sere by TJ Klune - 4.75/5 stars
It actually kind of makes me mad that this series isn't Klune's most famous work, because it's real good. At this point it seems kind of unlikely he's going to continue it, but man, I'd love another book.
These Silent Stars by Chani Lynn Feener - DNF at pg 68
Trailer Park Trickster by David R Slayton - 5/5 stars
See below.
Deadbeat Druid by David R Slayton - David R Slayton - 5/5 star
I LOVE this series. Love love love love. Absolute must read. If you're a fan of KD Edwards's The Tarot Sequence, this series is right up your alley. It seems like there will be more after this initial trilogy, and there's also a spinoff book coming soon which I'm super excited for. Read them!!

[Total creative control][Joanna Chambers][Sally Malcolm]

Joanna Chambers & Sally Malcolm:
Creative Types series (1,2,3). M-M. Modern. Doesn't describe skin-colour when it's a white person. Lead who ghosts sexual partners to end things. Bi lead. Interesting supporting cast. Infuriating bosses. Discussion of who tops before sex when pia penetration is involved; older, bigger lead mostly tops / tops first. Clear consent. Warm. Readable.
CW: panic attack; deceased parent; rejection; power imbalance; absent parent; partner who's a sibling's ex; cheating; divorce; failure to pay child support; indirectly abusive parent; historically expecting a child to take adult responsibilities; bullying at work; coercion; being misrepresented; implicit pressure to agree to dates for career support; unsafe housing; financial insecurity; abusive ex.

Queer Reviews: Sally Malcolm, Joanna Chambers, "Home Grown Talent" (Creative Types #2).
Tumblr media
CW: explicit sexual content, unhealthy family dynamics Plot: From the outside, it looks like model and influencer Mason Nash has it all—beauty, fame, and fortune. With his star rapidly rising, and a big contract up for grabs, Mason’s on the verge of hitting the big time. When an opportunity arises to co-host a gardening slot on daytime TV with his ex’s brother, Owen Hunter, Mason is definitely on-board. And he intends to use every trick in the book to make the show a hit—including agreeing to his ruthless producer’s demand to fake a ‘will-they/won’t-they’ romance with his co-host… Owen Hunter is a gardener with a huge heart and both feet planted firmly on the well-tilled ground. He’s proud of the life he’s built and has absolutely no desire to be on TV—yet somehow he finds himself agreeing to do the show. It’s definitely not because he’s interested in Mason Nash. The guy might be beautiful—and yeah, his spoiled brat routine presses all Owen’s buttons in the bedroom—but Owen has no interest in a short-term fling with a fame-hungry model. As the two men get closer, though, Owen starts to believe there’s more to Mason than his beautiful appearance and carefully-curated online persona—that beneath the glitz and glamour is a sweet, sensitive man longing to be loved. But in a world of media spin and half-truths, Owen is dangerously out of his depth. And when a ridiculous scandal explodes online, with Owen at its heart, it starts to look as though everything he thought was real is built on lies—including his budding romance with Mason… 8.5/10 on the Rainbow Scale™ 🌈: to quote A.J. Sherwood, "MISCOMMUNICATION IS THE DEVIL'S TROPE". I know I complain about this a lot, especially considering how much i love Pride and Prejudice, but seriously. I liked Owen and Mason slightly better than Lewis and Aaron, that's for sure. Owen definitely doesn't have as many issues as his brother, and Mason feels more fleshed out and with stronger motivations than Aaron, which was a nice surprise considering how he was portrayed in the first book.

Reading update, part 2

The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown by Vaseem Khan - 4/5 stars
All the Way Happy by Kit Coltrane - DNF
Couldn't get past the fact that it was blatantly Drarry fanfiction that had had the serial numbers filed off. It was seriously distracting. I don't have an issue with fic authors doing that (I'M ONE OF THEM), but this read like a find and replace had been done on the names, and nothing else had been changed. If the prose hadn't been so overwrought I might have enjoyed it, but the combination of Drarry AU + purple prose was just too cringey for me.
Total Creative Control by Joanna Chambers and Sally Malcolm - 5/5 stars
Ahhhhh I loved this book. I've only read Chambers's historical fiction so I was curious what this would be like, and it was so good. So so good.
Also, sometimes my wife says stuff and I'm like 'that's not a real thing that English people say, that's probably some weird thing her family says.' But then I'll read it in a book by an English person and I am schooled. Anyway that happened several times in this book.
The Name Bearer by Natalia Hernandez - DNF
I don't mind a slow-paced book but there was just so much info dumping in the first chapter, when chapter 2 started with more info dumping, I gave up.
Crossroads by Riley Hart - DNF
This book started with a description of the main character's apartment. There wasn't anything special about it, nor was it described in a unique way. I DNFed halfway through page 2. I know I have another Riley Hart book sitting in my TBR, which I will be digging out bringing to my local bookstore's used book buyback.
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner - 4.5/5 stars
Did Not Expect to enjoy this one. I got this in an IllumiCrate and I just remember the little blurby thing you get where the author talks about the book saying something about how she loves angry women. I'm over it. Angry is not a personality! Stop writing women who are angry and thinking you've written a well-rounded character!
But actually this book was really good! Predictable, but a good read. Unusually, my favorite character was the child. It helped that she had an adorable hare/bird/deer god of white lies following her around.
Tommy Cabot Was Here by Cat Sebastian - 5/5 stars
I love Sebastian's regency romances but I might love this series more. This is a very, very quick read (right around 100 pages) but she's just so good at creating these wonderful, fully-realized characters that you love from the first sentence.
As You Walk on By by Julian Winters - 2/5 stars
So at this point I think I have to concede that Julian Winters is not the author for me. He's constantly lauded as this wonderful writer whose books will make you smile for days. This is the third one I've read and I nearly DNFed it. The only thing that kept me going, ironically, was that I really liked the love interest and was rooting for them to get together. Typically I find the romances in Julian Winters books to be very flat and un-swoony. This one was actually quite nice though.
But the main character. Jesus Christ. He's SO annoying. Him and his shitty BFF who he falls out with deserve each other, honestly. There's only so many times I can sympathize with you because you have a comfortable, middle-class life and you go to a fancy pants private school, but waaaaah sometimes your friends don't say exactly the right thing about you being queer. Also having your MC tell the teenage girl who gets slut-shamed, gossiped about, and sexually harassed everywhere she goes that actually she doesn't have it as bad because she's white was...an interesting touch.
And idk if the Youth actually act and talk the way the teenagers do in this book, but if they do, I'm very glad I don't know any teenagers.
Why did I rate this book 2 stars instead of 1? Oh! I really liked Luca. He deserved a better book. And I liked River a lot, too. And the fact that this was clearly a take on The Breakfast Club was fun, just...not executed as well as I would have liked.

Quote
He'd been here a week already, but still John Sheppard was in awe. And not just of the technology; there were some scarily smart people around here, and he'd gradually begun to get to know some of them. McKay, the guy who'd told him to think about the solar system, seemed to be the head smart-ass. He knew his stuff alright, but was as prickly as a porcupine on a bad day. Then again, McKay spoke his mind and Sheppard admired that. Charm he could live without, honesty he couldn't.

Director Abigail Schaaff's first fiction film, "L'home dels nassos", a combination of mythology and historical memory, began shooting at the beginning of February and will continue through the first days of March. The feature film connects the 1930s and the 1960s and reflects the lies and silence imposed for decades, starring Pablo Derqui (Isabel, Los ojos de Julia, Si no t'hagués conegut, La Catedral del mar, La dona del segle) and Ivan Benet (Cerca de tu casa, Nit i dia, Teatre Lliure: l'ànec saltvage, Moebius).

Instinto de muerte, El Comisario, Hospital Central, La niña de la comunión), Pep Munné (Caza al asesino, Visions d'un estrany, Lifting de corazón, Periodistas, Smiley), Maria Molins (El bosque, A la deriva, Hijo de Caín, Entrevías), Jeannine Mestre (Goya, Tornarem, Savannah Bay, Vértigo en Manhattan), Jorge Motos (Lucas, La Caza. Monteperdido, Tú no eres yo, Con mis ojos, Feria: la luz más oscura), Berner Maynes (Después también, Svetlana: Moderna del Raval), Malcolm McCarthy (Nieva en Benidorm, Cuba libre, Amar es para siempre, Foodie love), Salli Diallo, Miranda Munné and Lluc Miravete.
Filming is taking place in different locations in Catalonia, such as Mura, the hermitage of Sant Julià d'Uixols in Castellterçol, the Collsuspina cave, the forest and the Romanesque bridge of Gualba and Can Plantada, in La Ametlla del Valles.
The film is a co-production of Aguacate & Calabaza Films, L'home dels nassos AIE, Inaudita and the French production company Halley Production, and in turn, has the support of Televisió de Catalunya, ICEC, ICAA and CREA SGR.
