September, 1979
You’d met Steve Harrington a week before your first day of seventh grade. You’d just moved to Hawkins from some small town in Pennsylvania - apparently your parents were big on the small town life - and you had been terrified.
You’d spent your entire life with the same group of kids and the same friends. You didn’t want to leave them, but you didn’t have any choice. And to a thirteen-year-old you, it felt like your parents were stabbing you in the back.
You still remember the tears that rolled down your cheeks as you helped your parents move the boxes holding your childhood items out of the U-Haul and into your brand new bedroom. Your mom did her best to cheer you up, “Look,” She spoke softly, tugging you into her side, “It’s so much bigger than your old room. Isn’t that nice?”
You just cried harder.
It was true, your dads new job in Hawkins was rolling in money like your family had never seen before, but you didn’t care about those kinds of things, you never had. You cared about the people and the memories you had to leave behind.
But, of course, none of that mattered at this point. You’d left. You still had your friends' numbers memorized, but how long would it be before it faded from your mind, and your number faded from theirs? The thought made you nauseous.
You spent that first night sniffling, surrounded by scattered cardboard boxes and various items. You didn’t even have your bed frame yet, the U-Haul had gotten delayed for whatever reason, so you were stuck with a mattress laid onto the dusty hardwood floor.
But, like there is with almost everything, there was a silver lining. Your books.
To most people, books are just that. Books. They’re boring, expensive, and seen as a way to waste time and nothing else. They don’t see them for what they really are.
To you (and your friends back home), a book was an escape. It was the perfect way to spend your time and the perfect hobby, and right now, it was the only thing keeping you from breaking down.
Your current book was about four sisters who all were navigating through different paths in life, and all finding different ways to deal with the world around them. It was a classic, and you saw a bit of yourself in all of the sisters. (The painter a little more than the others in all honesty.)
It was simple yet complex in all the right places and definitely one of your favorite books this year. You continue to read it through glassy eyes, doing your best to keep your mind off of your current situation, when suddenly there’s a bang at your window.
You jump up, arms instinctively hugging the open book to your chest. There was another one, and then another, and then another, before you finally swallow harshly and work up the courage to approach the glass. You placed your book gently onto the hardwood next to you, the spine up as it laid flat, and softly padded towards the noise.
Goosebumps rose onto your skin as you did, your short clad legs attempting to get used to the cold air around you now that you’d left the safety of your blankets.
At first, you couldn’t make anything out except for the house next to you and the starry night sky, but then you saw the cause of the noise. A rock. Someone was throwing rocks at your window.
You furrowed your brows and looked towards the ground, and low-and-behold some boy was standing outside your window. He had dark brown hair, wore a green sweatshirt with what you’re assuming is a school logo on it, and gray shorts.
Hesitantly, you unlocked your window and hauled it up, but not before another rock hurled its way straight at your neck. It hit you smack in the middle of your throat, causing you to choke for a moment and grab at the area. “Ow!”
The boy winced and immediately dropped the rest of the rocks in his hand, (why did he have so many rocks? At least ten fell out of his hand!) “Sorry!” He yelled out.
You glared at him, hand rubbing soothingly at your now sore throat, “Who are you?”
“Uh, Steve - Steve Harrington. I live next door.” He pointed at the house next to you, “You see that window?” He gestured to the one directly across from your own, “That’s my room.”
You nodded, eyes narrowing into thin slits, “Alright, Steve. If your room is right across from mine, why didn’t you just stay up there instead of going through the trouble of pelting rocks at me?”
Steve stills for a moment, and you can physically see the gears turning in his head. “Um,” He stumbles for a moment, “Give me one second.” You can hear him practically sprinting back into his house, his sandals smacking against the ground as he goes, and you can’t help but snicker.
You’d be lying if you said that you didn’t find the twenty seconds you’d spent with the boy so far to be the most enjoyable of this whole week, but it had. It was almost strange to you - to be talking to a boy. All of your friends back home had been girls, and you mostly stayed away from the boys. To you, they felt like unknown territory. What did they like to talk about? What did they like to do for fun? Did they have any interest in a girl like you? Would they ever have any interest in a girl like you?
All of your friends had had a boy like them at some point in time, some of them had already had boyfriends! But not you. No, never you.
Boys didn’t look at you. Steve was the first to ever even show any interest in you at all. It made your stomach flutter.
Soon enough, the light across from you flicks on and you watch curiously as Steve stumbles across piles of clothes and other knick-knacks to reach you. He struggles with the window for a second, before it suddenly pops open with a slight screech.
“Hey,” He smiled, breaths coming out a bit heavy.
Your lips twitched upwards at the corners, “Welcome back.” You teased.
Steve slapped his arms at his sides and let his head dip to the side, his eyes rolling a bit as he did, “I’m sure you missed me.”
You furrowed your brows, “You were gone for, like, five seconds. And I don’t even know you. Why would I miss someone I don’t know?”
“Uh, because I'm super buff and attractive?”
A snort slipped from you at that comment, “Yeah, okay. Keep telling’ yourself that.”
“I will.”
There’s a short pause between the two of you, and you nibble on your bottom lip. You’d never been able to banter so easily with many other people before. It made you excited.
“Soooo, where are you from?” Steve asks, effectively breaking the silence.
You sighed and leaned your elbows against the sill, your chin falling atop your hands, “Pennsylvania.” You answered dryly.
Steve nodded and copied your actions so that you were face to face, “I’ve never been there. I mean, my dad has for his work, but I never have personally.” He rambles.
You click your tongue, “That’s cool.”
Steve nods slowly, “Why’d you guys move?”
“Are you interrogating me?”
“You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”
You quickly shake your head, “No, I do. I just wasn’t expecting so many questions,” you chuckled, nervously tucking a stray piece if hair behind your ear, “Um, my dad got a new job here. Some bank job or something, I’m not really sure.”
Steve perked up, “My dad works at the bank too! Maybe they work together.”
You shrugged, “Maybe.”
Steve licked his lips and glanced down at the ground below you. The both of you were only on the second story, but the grass felt so much farther away then it really was. “You don’t seem very excited about it.”
You bit your lip, eyes darting across his tanned skin. The summer had done wonders on him, but you were sure the upcoming school year would fade it away. “Because I’m not.”
“Why?”
You gave him a look, “Would you wanna move away from all your friends?”
Steve paused to think for a moment. To him, leaving Tommy and Carol wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world. He could start over and ditch the reputation he’d built, but he knew that wasn’t the answer you were looking for, so instead he said, “No, I guess not.”
You gestured with your hand and huffed out a breath, “My point exactly.”
Steve shrugged, “Well, Hawkins isn’t all bad. It’s not like there’s monsters hiding out around here or something.” He joked.
You could help but laugh along with him. There was something about the way he always had something positive to say to make you feel better, or maybe that was just how you were observing him in the last ten minutes. “You’re funny, you know that?”
Steve scoffed out a laugh, standing back and crossing his arms over his chest in an attempt to look nonchalant, “Duh, of course I know that.”
You snickered, “Don't let it get to your head.”
“Too late. I can already feel my skull growing to accommodate.”
Your body shook as you laughed, moving your face under your hands to hide yourself. Steve mentally fist pumped at making you laugh like that, and he prayed he’d hear it again, and soon.
Once your laughter died down and all was left was silence, Steve asked, “Are you going to Hawkins Middle for school? Or did your parents enroll you in that Catholic place down the street?”
You shrugged, “Well, I’ve never heard of the Catholic place down the street, so I’m gonna say Hawkins Middle.”
Steve grinned, “Great! I go there, too. You can totally sit with me at lunch and stuff.”
“I’d be grateful to be allowed in your presence.” You tease, pretending to bow your head.
Steve just smirked, “I’d expect nothing less.”
You and Steve spent practically all night talking. He’d gone down to his kitchen at some point for a snack and came back upstairs with two bowls of chips. After many failed attempts, some including one of you nearly falling to your death, you were able to grab the chip bowl meant for you.
Once both of you were full and content, it was already nearing midnight. If your parents saw you up and talking to Steve, you’d be in so much trouble.
“I think I’d better head to bed.” You mumbled, a sad smile on your face.
Steve nodded and wiped his palms on his pants, “Yeah, me too.”
You didn’t want this to be a one time thing in all honesty. You really, really enjoyed talking to Steve, and you hoped he really, really enjoyed talking to you as well.
You opened your mouth to tell him so, but decided against it, so all that fell from your lips was a simple, “Goodnight, Steve.”
He gave you a sappy smile, “Goodnight…” His eyebrows furrowed and he blinked excessively, “Wait, you never told me your name.”
He was right. You hadn’t realized it, but you never thought to tell Steve your name.
“It’s Y/N.”
Steve just chuckled and placed his hands above his head onto the window, “Goodnight, Y/N.”
❣︎
That following week had been filled with late night conversations between you and Steve. They’d always start the same - you’d be laying in your bed reading a book (you’d gotten your bed frame finally), Steve would throw something at your window, and then you’d talk and share a bowl of chips.
In all honesty, this tradition had become your rock. It felt like the one thing that was really yours in this new town.
That last night before the first day of school, Steve had seemed troubled, his brows crinkled and he wasn’t talking as much as he normally did.
“Whats wrong?” You asked hesitantly. You weren’t sure if you and Steve were at the point in your relationship where you could be open with each other. In all honesty, you were expecting him to say something like oh, i’m fine or nothing, why? But he didn’t, instead he said, “I’m worried about tomorrow.”
You furrowed your brows. Steve had been practically shouting from the rooftops how excited he was for you to meet all of his friends just two days before. “Why?” You asked, “I thought you were excited?”
Steve bit his lip, “I was.” He sighed, “But I went to this pool party at a friends house today and it just.. it reminded me of some stuff I’d forgotten about.” Well, that explained his fresh tan.
You weren’t sure how to reply to him. You didn’t want to push him or make him feel pressured to say anything, but you were also curious. “Was it.. was it bad?”
Steve sighed and ran a hand through his hair, “Honestly? Um, kind of.” He groaned, eyes shut as he tried to find the words, “Tommy and Carol… they’re not the best people. And I know that I shouldn’t be friends with them but,” he paused and rubbed the bridge of his nose. You wanted to reach out and comfort him. “I feel like I owe them, you know? I was a real lonely kid and they were the first people who ever made an attempt to get to know me, but now…” He trailed off, his forehead hitting the windowsill as he dipped his head.
You bit your lip, unsure of what to say. You didn’t know Tommy or Carol, the only things you knew about them were what Steve had said, which were only good things.
You crossed your knees, left heel popped as you nibbled on your lower lip in thought. If Steve really felt this bad about whatever they were doing, then the right thing would be to distance from them, but you didn’t know his situation. To Steve, he felt as if he owed them something, even though friendship isn’t something that should have to be repaid.
You sucked in a breath, socked feet tapping rapidly at the hardwood below you, “It’s okay to grow out of friendships, you know?” You mumbled. “It’s happened to me, and we both parted ways happily without some big, dramatic fallout. If you really feel that way about them, maybe it’s time you do the same.”
Steve was silent for a few moments, and you couldn’t help but feel badly for him. “Thanks Y/N, but…” He took a deep breath and shook his head lightly, “I just don’t think that’s something I can do. I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”
You were a little shocked when he ended the conversation so suddenly, and were worried you’d said something to bother him. “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”
He chuckled softly, messy brown hair falling over his eyes, “Don't worry, It’s not you. But I've really gotta get to bed, okay?”
Unconvinced, you just nod. “Alright… I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Steve crashes into his bed with a muffled groan, pink lips pulled down into a frown. In all of reality, he’d gone to this party and boasted to everyone about his new neighbor. And instead of being happy and excited to have a new person in the group, Tommy and Carol had grimaced at the thought.
“What’s her name again?” She asked, legs crossed as she sat on the purple lawn chair.
“Y/N.”
Tommy snickered and leaned over to whisper something in Carol's ear, and she got that knowing smirk on her face. The one that practically dripped venom. “Oh, you little friend can totally hang out with us.” She said, tone heavy with sarcasm, “She seems just peachy!”
Steve’s stomach immediately twisted, his intuition practically screaming at him to realize it’s a setup, and to do everything in his power to keep you away from it.
“Come on, guys,” He grumbled, wiping a hand over his face as water dripped from his hair onto the concrete below him, “will you please just be nice?”
Carol crossed her arms over her chest and pursed her lips, “What makes you think we’re not gonna be nice to her, Stevie?”
His nose scrunched at the nickname, anytime Carol called him that he knew he’d struck a nerve. “I’m not trying to say you won’t be, it’s just… I really like her and I don’t want her to stop talking to me if you guys do something.”
Carol snorted, her red hair falling over her shoulder as she did, “You like her? You don’t even know her!”
Steve’s cheeks flush a bright pink as he sinks further into his chair. Yes, it was true that he’d grown the tiniest crush on you during your late night talks, but he couldn’t help it! You were so kind and soft-spoken, and you always knew how to make him laugh. And the fact that you were one of the prettiest girls he’d ever seen was just the icing on the cake. How could he not fall the smallest bit in love with you?
That next morning you’d been practically shaking in the car. Your mom assured you over and over that it’d be a good day and you’d make lots of new friends, but it wasn’t that you were nervous about.
Sure, school without friends sucked but you could live just fine without them. No, you were worried about Steve. He’d been worried about something his friends had said, and you had a sinking feeling it had something to do with you.
As soon as you stepped foot onto campus you were immediately looking for Steve. You’d seen him leave his house a couple minutes before you did, so you assumed he was already here, you just weren’t sure where.
You swallowed as you walked through the crowded halls. There were groups of girls reuniting after summer vacations spent in Europe, guys with tan skin and even brighter eyes, but no Steve.
You get through your whole first period class with zero sign of the brunette boy, and it’s not until you’re halfway to your second do you catch a glimpse of him. His back is turned to you, but you could recognize that laugh anywhere.
Shyly, you walk up to him. You can see he’s with a freckled boy and red headed girl, who you assume are his friends, Tommy and Carol.
Carol notices you first, and she eyes you up and down with precision. She smacks on her gum before she nudges Tommy and gestures her head in your direction.
The both of them stare at you for so long that by the time you even make it to Steve’s side he’s already turning to face you.
Surprise flashes on his face, but it’s soon replaced with happiness, and then something you can’t quite read. The smile on his face is strained as he says, “Y/N! Hey!”
You give him a small wave back, nerves crawling up your spine at the hungry look Carols giving you. Like you’re her next meal.
“Oh my gosh!” She practically squeals, grabbing your arm and forcing you closer to her. You nearly stumble to the ground from the force but Steve grabs your shoulder and steadies you. “Steve told us so much about you!” She leered, well manicured hands hugging you close to her body.
You pushed away from her gently, uncomfortable with all of the attention, “Oh. That’s nice.” You glance at Steve to try and get a read from him, but his face is blank. He meets your gaze apologetically and crosses his arms over his chest, “Leave her alone, Carol.” He mutters.
Tommy flashes his teeth with a hateful grin, “Oh, come on,” He snickers, “we just wanna know your girlfriend better.”
“She’s not my girlfriend!” Steve defends, eyebrows furrowed in frustration.
Carol rolls her eyes at him and then turns her attention back to you, “Look, why don’t you eat lunch with us today, hm?” She asks, batting her lashes.
Your eyes dart to Steve. You don’t want to invade his space (even though he’d said you could eat lunch with him days ago), and you can tell hes clearly uncomfortable with the way Tommy and Carol are acting, so you attempt to say, “Oh, I don’t think-”
Carol cuts you off, “We’ll see you there, okay?” She draws out the syllables in the okay, linking her arm with Tommy’s and then walking away without allowing you to answer.
You and Steve watch them go, and you begin to bite your nails, a nervous habit you’d been trying to break. “I didn’t mean to-” You begin, hoping Steve isn’t too angry with you including yourself like this, but he just shakes his head with a sigh. “It’s.. fine. It’s not like Carol gave you much choice.” He attempts to joke, and you let out an awkward laugh.
Steve eyes you, clearly unsure of how to release the tension surrounding the both of you, but the late bell does it for you.
You barely bid him a short goodbye before you’re reaching for the map in your back pocket and leaving Steve behind to stand awkwardly in the hallway alone.
He watches you leave, stomach flipping at whatever he knows Carol must have planned for lunch.
Unlike Tommy, Carol was calculated. Tommy would be mean on the spot, he didn’t really plan out any of the things he did, they more so just happened. But Carol, she’d plan them for weeks.
Once, she’d pretended to be friends with Jacey Collins for nearly the entire fifth grade year just so she could embarrass her at her birthday party. Steve doesn’t know what Carol did, but whatever it was, it was bad enough to make Jacey move schools.
So, yeah, he was a little nervous for lunch.
He was even more nervous every time he’d catch Tommy and Carol giggling with each other, both refusing to tell Steve what the hell they were talking about, and instead promising he’d find out soon enough.
By fourth period, their last period before lunch, Steve had had enough. Carol was whispering something in Tommy’s ear, casually glancing at Steve as she did. Finally fed up, steve smacked his hand on the desk and said, “Carol, whatever you're planning, just quit it, okay? Y/N’s a nice girl, and she doesn’t deserve whatever twisted joke you and numb nuts are planning.” He smacked Tommy upside the head, causing the boy to rub at the spot gently.
Carol glowered, her eyes thin slants, “If you really have that much of an issue with it, why don’t you go sit with your little girlfriend in the bathroom or something. I’m sure she’d love that.” She giggled with a suggestive wiggle of her brows.
Tommy cackled, “I could totally see her and Steve getting it on in the bathroom.”
Steve scrunched his nose, “Gross, man!” He shoved Tommy in his chair, and then focused his attention back onto Carol, “This is the only time I’ve ever asked you to do basically anything for me. So please, just this once, can you just be nice?”
Carols lips thinned into a line as she swung her feet back in forth in her chair, back resting against the plastic seat. “If I leave your little,” she pretended to gag, “girlfriend alone, what’re you gonna do for me?”
Steve should’ve known that Carol Perkins does not do anything for anyone unless there’s something in it for her. He shrugged, “Anything you want.”
A cheshire grin immediately spread onto her glossy lips, “Anything?”
“Yep,” Steve huffed with annoyance, “anything.”
She shared a look with Tommy, the both of them almost looked to be communicating with just their eyes. “Okay,” She suddenly slapped her palms onto her lap, “We want full 24/7 access to your pool for the rest of the summer.”
Steve immediately groaned and ran a hand through his hair. He couldn’t use the excuse that his parents would get mad at him because his parents were never home anyway and they knew that. That’s why she asked him, because she knew they could get away with practically anything there.
He’s tempted to say no, to refuse and let Carol have her way with you, but then he thinks about the soft smile you get on your face everytime he opens his window, and he knows there’s no way he could do that to you.
“Fine.”
“Really?”
“Mhm.” He already knows this is a bad idea, but he reminds himself who he’s doing it for. “The pool is completely yours.”
Carol squeals happily, immediately turning to Tommy to discuss what Steve assumes are the things they’ll do together, but he drowns them out.
All he knows is that you won’t have to be subjected to Carol’s cruelty, and that makes the whole thing worth it.
But, he should’ve known Carol would find a loophole.
By the time lunch came the knot that had formed in Steve’s stomach had disappeared, and he was actually excited to see you.
Tommy spotted you first, a yellow tray in your hand as your eyes darted across the room. “God, she looks like a puppy.” He snickered in Steve’s ear.
Steve shook him off, muttering a quiet shut up under his breath as he made himself known to you.
“Y/N! Hey.” You’d never looked so relieved to see him as you do now, your furrowed brows immediately relaxing. “Hi.” you murmured.
“Uh, I’ll take you to our table.”
You gazed down to his empty hands, “Aren’t you gonna get lunch?”
Steve couldn’t help but laugh at your words, “Oh, no. We never eat lunch here.” He gestured with his head to the rest of his friends, who were already sitting and were also without lunch.
Your gaze dropped down to your own tray, and you suddenly felt insecure. At your old school, you and your friends always ate lunch, you didn’t even know it was a thing not to. “Should I…” You trailed off, gesturing to the trash can. Steve immediately shook his head, “Oh, no! I mean if you’re hungry then you should eat.”
You nodded and squared your shoulders. Steve was right, no one was gonna care if you were eating lunch or not. It was just your insecurities speaking.
You gave him a genuine smile and let him lead you to the table, you sat next to him obviously, on the outside of everyone else.
Carol flashed a grin at you, “I’m so happy you decided to come! For a second there we thought you might run off to the bathrooms with the freaks!” She giggled. The comment made your stomach churn, but you were sure it was just some harmless joke, right? You forced a laugh, “Oh, no. I was just confused in the whole lunch situation.” You said, pointing to the empty spaces around them.
Carol hummed, pretending to be intrigued, “Oh, we never eat lunch here. It makes you gain, like, twenty pounds in just a day!” All of Carol's friends giggled, and that nervous feeling in your stomach suddenly came back tenfold.
“Oh,” You swallowed, “I didn’t know that..”
“Of course you didn’t, silly!” She eyed you up and down, “Actually, do you want me to throw that away for you? It’s probably a good thing you don’t eat that you wouldn’t want to..” She trailed off with a wince.
Tommy let out a loud laugh, “Yeah, no offense, but how often did you eat your other schools lunch? It kind of shows.”
“Tommy!” Steve shouted suddenly, “What the hell is wrong with you?”
To you, your body had never really been an insecurity for you. But Carol and Tommy’s comments suddenly have you folding your arms over your stomach in an attempt to hide.
Tommy pursues his lips, “It’s just the truth!”
Steve just scoffed and stood roughly from his spot, “Come on, Y/N.” You immediately followed him, doing your best to avoid Carol's smirk as she watched you walk away.
Steve led you into the empty hallway, hands clenched at his sides in anger. “God, I am so sorry. I should’ve known they’d say some dumb shit like that-”
“Hey, hey,” You shushed him, “It’s fine. You didn’t know. We did the right thing by leaving.”
The guilt still didn’t leave Steve though, because deep down he did know something was going to happen. He knew Carol wouldn’t stop just because Steve offered her something. And the thing about her was she was so subtle about it that it seems like she doesn’t know what she’s saying is mean, when in all actuality, she does.
“No, still, I shouldn’t have let you sit there.”
You sighed, “Look, maybe I just..” You swallowed, “Why don’t we just keep our friendship out of school, okay? I’ll find some friends on my own.”
Steve’s lips parted slightly, eyebrows crinkling together in confusion, “So I'm just supposed to ignore you?”
You shook your head, a smile tugging at your lips, “I’m not saying that. We just won’t go out of our way to see each other.”
Steve sucked in a breath. Doing that made it seem like he was ashamed to be friends with you, which was honestly anything from the truth. If anything, he was ashamed to be friends with them.
“I don’t want you to think…”
“I won’t think anything,” You reassured, “This was my idea anyway. And besides, this way we can keep everything more private.”
Steve took a breath and let himself soak in the information. You would still be friends, just not at school. Easy.
“Okay,” He said, “I’ll see you tonight then.”
June, 1986
Present Day
Getting a summer job at the bookstore was honestly one of the best things you think you could’ve done. After graduation, and the unfortunate mall fire at Starcourt which destroyed your job at The Gap, you’d been out of work and living with your parents.
For most people, nineteen is a normal age to be living with your parents, especially when you’re putting yourself through school like you are because you’re parents refuse to pay because you chose a local college instead of the prestigious one they’d picked out for you across the country.
Your parents were disappointed with your choices and you knew that, but you couldn’t bear the thought of leaving just yet. There were so many relationships you weren’t ready to end and so many things left unsaid with.. certain people.
Like Robin for example. You’d both met a couple weeks after your seventh grade year started. She was a year younger than you were, but she was still the closest friend you had outside of, well, yeah. Steve.
Yours and Steve’s relationship had grown much more complex as the years went on, and long story short, you didn’t talk to him anymore. It hurt too much to do so.
But, Bookish was almost like an escape for you. Most of the people that came in were either kids with their mothers, usually just beginning to fall in love with books just as you did, or they were elderly people who'd fallen in love with it way before you’d even been born.
Robin working there with you only made it better. She used to work at Scoops Ahoy in the mall, along with he-who-shall-not-be-named, but once it burned down she’d been left without a job just as you had.
She’d been over at your house during spring break, the both of you watching Footloose. You on your back, head hanging off of the edge of your bed. Robin rested her back against the headboard, shoveling another handful of popcorn into her mouth. “You know,” Her words came out muffled, so she paused to let herself chew the rest of her food. “That new bookshop or whatever opened a couple weeks ago. Maybe we should apply there.”
You readjusted so you were leaning back into your elbows, a slight raise of your brow. “Bookish? I just went there the other day.”
Robin nodded and popped another piece of popcorn in her mouth, “Did you see if they were hiring?”
You scrunch your nose, trying to remember. During your visit, you’d been too preoccupied trying to find the best book to purchase and hadn’t really looked. “I have no idea. But, if they're new, they probably have to be.”
Robin agrees with you with a nod of her head, and the both of you decide to finish out the movie and then drive down. Robin unfortunately doesn’t have a license, so that meant you were basically forced to drive her everywhere. Well, either you or Steve.
Robin used to hate Steve, even while you were friends with him. She was one of the only people who was aware of your friendship and what it had turned into, and she constantly reprimanded you for getting involved with a guy like that.
But, once they started working together at Starcourt, her view completely changed, but by that time you and Steve were already avoiding each other like the plague.
You glanced at the window, wondering if maybe Steve was on the other side. You hadn’t opened that window or even the blinds for over a year, too afraid of what you might end up seeing.
“Hey, you ready?” Robin asks, throwing her jacket on and leaning against your doorframe. You swallow, eyes lingering on the blinds before you turn to her with a smile. “Let’s go.”
And that was that. You’d both gotten hired nearly on the spot by the sweet old lady who ran the store.
Bookish was one of those places that made you feel like you were entering a different time. The floor was dark oak wood and the walls were linen, and it was lined with rows and rows of books. Some were neatly displayed while others just stacked messily.
It was June in Indiana, which meant all the electric fans were going and the AC was cranked as high as it could go, but the warmth still seeped into the building.
“It’s so hot!” Robin groaned, leaning over the counter dramatically, “I’m gonna melt.”
You snorted as you continued to organize the books in the fiction section, “It’s not that bad.”
Robin smacked her lips, “You say that now, and then you’ll turn and see i’ve become a puddle on the floor.”
You placed a hand on your heart in false sympathy, eyes closing as you imagined the situation, “That would be so, so completely horrible.” You sniffled, pretending to be sympathetic, then whipped your head to her with a teasing glint in your eye, “But maybe I'd finally be able to get some work done without that constant whining in my ear!”
She scoffed, pretending to be offended. “This is not whining! It’s complaining. There’s a difference.”
You grinned and pushed the cart holding the books back behind the counter, “Doesn’t seem like it to me.”
She just rolls her eyes, slumping back into the counter with her head resting in her hand, “Whatever…” She trails off, eyes wondering across the building, and then she gasps suddenly, “Oh, shit.”
You turn to look at her, eyebrows crinkled, “What's wrong-” She cuts you off by basically pushing you to the wall, her hand covering your eyes.
“What the hell, Robin!” You huff, pushing on her arm in an attempt to release yourself form her hold.
“I am so, so sorry.”
“What are you talking about-” You’re finally able to push her away from you, her arm falling to her side as you blink in an attempt to get used to the lighting again. “Seriously, what is wrong with you?” You question, wiping your hands on your dress.
Robin bites her lip and stares right past you towards the front door, her eyes slightly wide.
You like to think that after so many years of knowing Robin you’ve become an expert on her body language, and right now it was practically screaming one thing. Panic.
Hesitantly, you allow yourself to look towards the front where Robin was staring. Honestly, based off of the look on her face you were expecting a monster or maybe even Tammy Thompson to be standing there, but the reality is much worse.
“What the hell is he doing here?”
Steve Harrington is casually conversing with Mrs. Beck, the old lady who runs the bookstore, like he’s known her for years. He’s got that soft smile on his face he always got when something made him happy, and his hair has grown a little since the last time you saw him. His face looks freshly shaven, and he’s wearing that god-awful bright yellow sweater you’d told him to burn years ago.
“I can explain.” Robin stammers, hands coming up to tug at her shirt the way she always does when she’s nervous.
You scrunch your nose and force yourself to turn away from him. It should’ve been a no-brainer that Steve being here had something to do with her, because you don’t think you’ve ever seen the boy pick up a book willingly his entire life.
You point an accusing finger at her, “What did you do?”
Robin swallows, jaw opening and closing as she tries to find the words to defend herself. Finally, she lets out a loud huff and smacks her hands against her sides, “He needed a job! Keith fired him over at Family Video because he was apparently “stealing all the hot ladies from him”, and I told him to come here without thinking! I promise I immediately regretted it and I tried to talk him out of it but it was like he pulled the application out of thin air!”
You rub your temples in an attempt to calm your budding nerves. You didn’t want to be angry with Robin because she didn’t deserve your anger for offering her friend a job, no matter what your history with said friend is, but you couldn’t help the growing irritation in the pit of your stomach. “Why didn’t you at least tell me? Then I could’ve at least prepared myself!”
Robin stutters over her words, hands gesturing wildly, “Because I knew you’d be mad!”
“I’m not mad!”
“Mad about what?”
You’re almost surprised Steve has the audacity to join the conversation so casually, as if you were still the best of friends who talked every night.
You swallow and squeeze your hands into fists at your sides until your knuckles are a pure shade of white. Robin just stares at him with parted lips, eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Uh,” She swallows, allowing herself to steal a glance at you, who has since paled significantly, “Nothing.”
Steve lets out a huh, his eyes lingering on you, who hasn’t had the courage to turn around and actually look at him, instead leaving him to stare at your back. Steve doesn’t mind though, a little bit of you is more than enough for him.
The three of you are at a stand-still, everyone waiting for one of you to make the first move, for someone to speak, to shout, scream, anything.
But you can’t move because this is the first time you’ve heard his voice in over a year. It's still smooth as butter and music to your ears. It’s the first time you’ve smelt his cologne, pine and oak but still with a hint of the ocean. It’s the first time you’ve been near him, and it hurts.
It hurts because you can’t help but wonder about how different your life would be if Steve hadn’t screwed everything up, if he hadn’t said what he said or did what he did.
The back of your throat begins to ache with an onslaught of tears fighting to be let out, but you swallow them down. You refuse to shed any more tears over him.
“What’re you doing here, Steve?” Even his name hurts to say.
“Robin, uh, she told me Mrs. Beck was hiring and, well, I needed a job..”
You finally whip around and face him, your hair following you as you do and harshly slapping against your face, but you ignore it. “That’s the only reason? I find that a little hard to believe.” You mumble the last part, eyes narrowing as you stare at him. Steve hadn’t realized how much he missed your glare.
“Yeah, it is. Why do you wanna know?” He asks with a suggestive taunt, almost as if he’s daring you to take the bait. You know how his mind works though, so you don’t fall for it.
“I just didn’t know if you finally decided you wanted to learn how to read s’all.”
Steve can’t help the smirk that grows on his face. “I was hoping you’d teach me, actually.”
You scoff, a shiver running up your spine in disgust. Of course he’d say some stupid shit like that, he always knew how to get on your nerves. “In your dreams, Harrington.”
Steve grinned, a snarky remark begging to spill from his lips, but you don’t let him. Instead, you flip him off and nearly jog into the back room, your legs shaking as you go.
Robin can’t help but feel concerned as she watches you leave, seeds of guilt already beginning to grow in her stomach. She furrowed her eyebrows and smacked Steve on the back of the head, causing him to let out a sharp yelp. “What was that for?” He grumbled, hand reaching back to nurse the spot.
“What was that for?” Robin mocked, nostrils flared as she pointed an accusing finger at Steve, “You said you were gonna try and win her back! Newsflash buddy, but making her even more angry than she already is isn’t gonna do that!”
“I know that!” Steve defends, “I know what i’m doing, okay? Just trust me.”
Robin was really beginning to regret this.

March, 1981
By the time you and Steve started your freshman year of highschool you’d gotten involved in completely different social circles. Steve stayed with all of his popular friends, and was rapidly climbing the highschool food chain. You on the other hand, well, you were doing the opposite.
You weren’t exactly a weirdo per se, but you definitely weren’t cool enough to be associated with any of the popular kids, and that was completely fine with you.
“Sweetheart, I’m sorry, but there is no universe where Queen is better than The Beatles. It’s just not a thing!”
“You’re just uneducated! Freddy Mercury is a musical genius!” You argue, pelting a potato chip across your window. It nearly hits him, but loses speed and falls to the grass instead.
He chuckles and leans back in his desk chair. You and Steve had both long since decided to just leave your chairs next to your windows, it only made sense since you spent hours talking each night. “I’m not saying he isn’t, but you’re forgetting about Beatlemania. Last I checked, there was never a thing like that for Queen.”
You groan and cross your arms over your chest, eyes flickering to the Queen vinyls on your shelves. “Just admit you’re wrong so we can move on, please.”
Steve is stubborn. He knows that on all levels, The Beatles are better than Queen. But you have that pleading look on your face, the one with the puppy dog eyes. The one Steve has never been able to say no to. He sighs and throws his head back, a lopsided grin on his face as he admits, “Fine, Queen is better.”
You smile gleefully and cross your legs, “Was that so hard?”
No, it wasn’t. If you looked at Steve like that and asked him to move the world, he’d do so without breaking a sweat.
“Yes, actually. It made me nauseous.”
“You’re such a baby.”
You’d be lying if you said you hadn’t spent these last two years falling in love with Steve Harrington. How could you not when he made it so effortless? Honestly, you didn’t even notice it was happening until one day you looked at him and suddenly it was like the stars aligned in front of you.
Sometimes, you’d catch yourself staring at him for too long at school and would have to physically rip yourself away and back to whatever lesson the teacher was babbling about or whatever rant your friend was on. He was just so… distracting. Especially now that he’d joined the swim team and had begun to fill out his clothes.
But, you could never have Steve. There was too much on the line. The most obvious being your friendship, and that was something you just couldn’t risk losing. It meant too much to you. But, sometimes you still let your mind wonder. You’d let yourself dream of kisses on cheeks, of love confessions done under covers and milkshakes shared over dinner.
You’d always have to stop though, because thinking about it for too long just made you sad.
The obvious fact that nobody outside of your family and Robin knew of your friendship with the boy was also a big problem with this fantasy. You knew how Steve’s friends were. If he began dating you secretly and suddenly stopped being interested in typical, well, boy things, it’d bring up questions that Steve couldn’t answer.
So the general consensus here was that Steve Harrington was off limits for the foreseeable future.
“What're you thinking about in that big brain of yours?” He asks softly, pushing a stray strand of hair out of his face.
You swallow, embarrassed to have been caught but also unsure of how to approach the question. “Nothing. Just.. thinking about this project for school.”
“What is it? Maybe I can help.”
You snorted. Steve was a lot of things - beautiful, funny, athletic - but helpful with anything school related? Absolutely not. “I doubt that.”
“No, seriously,” He straightened in his chair a bit, hitting the backrest comfortably, “hit me.”
You chuckled awkwardly, eyes avoidant. In all actuality, there wasn’t any project, it was just an excuse you made up on the spot. But, maybe you could play this in your favor.
“Well, we read this short story about this girl who’s in love with a guy she can never have, and no matter how many solutions she comes up with in her mind he will always be off-limits from her. We’re supposed to come up with a solution for her to show that, like, nothing is impossible, I guess…” You trailed off at the end, rubbing at your arm uncomfortably.
Steve made a strange noise in the back of his throat, crossing his arms over his chest as his eyebrows knitted together. You could practically see the gears turning in his head, and sucked in your bottom lip nervously. Would he know you were lying?
“That’s a weird project.” He mumbles, completely unaware of your wide eyes. “Uh, yeah, it is.” You stammered, the confused look on Steve’s face made you realize how stupid this was, and you immediately go to discard the entire thing, “Just forget it, It was stupid anyway-”
“I’d tell her to just go for it.”
Your mouth goes dry, “What?”
“I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? He says no? And what if that guy really does like her back, what then? She’ll never know if she doesn’t tell him!”
Your stomach practically explodes in nerves, and you're unsure of what to say. Steve’s looking at you expectantly, but all you can focus on is that one short phrase. She’ll never know if she doesn’t tell him.
It was true, but was it really that simple? No - it’s not. The risks are too great, and sure, Steve makes it seem so easy, but it’s not. Nothing is easy when it comes to your feelings for him.
The one thing you were almost certain of was that Steve doesn’t love you like you love him. It was obvious in the constant stares at prettier girls, with fuller figures and whitened smiles. It was obvious in the kisses he’d share with them behind bleachers, hidden away from prying eyes. It was obvious in the way he’d gush to you about his latest crush, of how beautiful they were and how in love he was. And the funny thing? They were always the opposite of you. More outspoken and confident - not afraid to show a little skin. Something you were envious of.
“But.. What if she does know? And she can never tell him because she knows he’ll reject her and then everything between them will never be the same again?”
Steve is a little surprised by your question, and he begins to feel nervous under your piercing gaze. Why were you asking him this? Did you.. did you know? There was no way you did - he always made sure to keep his feelings hidden away anytime he was with you. He’d fight down the blush, push away the longing - all of it. In all honesty, he was starting to question if this was for a project in the first place.
At first, your project had hit a little close to home, but he didn’t let himself overthink it. But now, his mind was practically swarming with uncharted waters he’d always ignored.
But, still, he amuses the question. “Maybe their relationship will change into the way she wants. She can’t assume the guy doesn’t like her just because he doesn’t show it. Maybe it’s there, and he’s just really good at hiding it.”
You no longer enjoyed this conversation. Now it just hurts - because Steve doesn’t even know what he’s doing to you. He’s giving you hope, and that’s a dangerous thing to have. It was something you couldn’t let yourself have.
You needed to get away from this conversation and honestly just let it die out. You needed to breathe in the fresh air, finally let yourself take a full breath instead of this constricted, shallow breathing you were currently experiencing.
“Do you wanna go for a bike ride?”
Steve snorts, shoulders rising and falling as he does. “Now? It’s almost midnight and we have school tomorrow -”
“I’ll go by myself then.” You’re already slipping in your tennis shoes before Steve can even argue, throwing a jacket on to protect yourself from the cold night.
Steve nearly jumps out of his chair, brown eyes amused and a smile tugging on his lips. Usually he was the one forcing you to sneak out with him, so this was a nice change of pace.
He meets you outside, watching as you wheel your light blue bike away from the side of the house and to the driveway.
“Where are we going?” He asks, throwing a leg over his own bike and gazing at the soft smile on your face.
“Anywhere.”
That's how you both find yourselves now, wide smiles on your faces as you ride through the quiet town. You were used to the quietness of Hawkins, but not like it is now. There’s not a soul in sight, the only thing illuminating the road in front of you being the yellow street lights.
Eventually, you find a nice hilltop to stop at, and the both of you practically collapse onto the grass.
You’re panting slightly from the ride, but you don’t even care. All you can focus on is the starry sky, thousands of different constellations making themselves known to you.
Sometimes, you think Steve is like a constellation. Beautiful to look at and widely studied, but untouchable. Only a select few got to go up and be with the stars, and you weren’t one of them.
“It’s beautiful out here,” You whisper, hands intertwining on your stomach comfortably.
Steve gazes at the side of your face from where he lays next to you, hands behind his head. “Yeah,” He breathes, forcing his gaze away from you and to the stars above, “It really is.”
You’re not sure how long you’re out there with him, you just know by the time you get back home you’re exhausted.
You and Steve barely spoke a word to each other that whole time, only occasionally pointing out a star that shined brighter than the others or made a funny shape.
But, as you collapse onto your bed and drift into a dreamless sleep there’s one thing you’re sure of.
You are in love with Steve Harrington, and you think you always will be.

June, 1986
You’ve chosen to completely ignore Steve, even when he attempts to talk to you. You’ll simply stick your nose farther into your book and walk away from him.
You’ll give him some grace though, because he never takes your rejection harshly. He simply watches you walk away with a sigh and turns to talk to Robin about something.
Robin watches you turn tail and practically run away from Steve for what feels like the thousandth time this week, and she’s had enough. “Steve.”
He turns to look at her lazily, hip resting against the counter top and arms crossed against his chest. He’d attempted to ask you what you were reading today because he noticed it was different than the one he’d seen you with for the past couple of days, but as soon as you saw him approach you shot him an icy glare and walked to the other side of the store. He could see you now, sitting in the window nook comfortably.
“I’m not sure if you’re noticed, but you’re not really making any progress here.” Robin scolds in a hushed voice. She wants you to be happy, and for the past year you’ve been anything but. She’s had to comfort you through too many crying sessions, had to stay over because you couldn’t be alone way too many times, and had to watch you close those blinds for the last time and never open them again.
Robin remembers how you were before Steve went and messed everything up, and she selfishly wants that back. Don’t get her wrong, she still loves you more than life itself, but she knows what you’re like when you’re happy, and right now this is not it.
Steve crosses his arms over his chest, “I know that, Robin. But she won’t talk to me.”
She scoffs, “Can you blame her? You broke her heart! Personally, I wouldn’t talk to you either after something like that.”
Steve stares at the floor in front of him, shifting his position so his back is leaning against the counter instead of his hip.
Steve hates thinking about how he treated you during your senior year. Actually, he hates to think about how he treated you nearly all of highschool. You didn’t deserve it, and you were an angel for putting up with it. But, sometimes angels get pushed too hard.
He still remembers the tears that stained your cheeks as you begged him to explain himself, remembers the hoarseness in your voice as you screamed at him to leave. But, he thinks the thing that hurt the most was watching you close those blinds for the last time.
That was when he knew it was over. Anytime you’d argued in the past you’d always kept the blinds open, it was almost like a peace offering, like your silent way of telling him you guys would be okay.
“I don’t…” He swallows, “I don’t know how to fix it.”
Robin can’t help but feel sympathetic for him. She understands why you refuse to talk to him, hell, she’d probably do the same thing. But, she also knows Steve and she understands how much he regrets his decisions back then. She knows how heavily he was influenced by the people around him and the constant pressure to be King Steve.
“You need to show her you’ve changed, not just tell her. I could tell you I had a boyfriend but once you saw me kissing a girl you’d know I wasn’t being truthful.”
Steve can’t help the snort that slips from him at her comparison. But, he knows she’s right. What good is it to sit here and preach to you that he’s a changed man if he doesn’t do anything to prove it to you?
You on the other hand couldn’t even focus on your book. You’d reread the same page twenty times in the last five minutes, and you still had no idea what was going on! Steve was too distracting - and not just because you hated him.
You didn’t want to admit it to yourself, but sometime in the last year you’d forgotten just how attractive Steve was. The moles that dotted his neck like they’d been crafted by Aphrodite herself, and the way his eyes glimmered a honey brown whenever the sun shined on them. His lips, so pink and sculpted to fit the frame of his face. And don’t even mention his muscles or you might just faint on the spot.
You steal a glance towards him from the corner of your eye, watching as he talks with Robin about something you can’t make out. His head is hung low though, so you can assume it’s nothing good. Maybe she was lecturing him for bothering you, and if you were lucky he’d finally listen.
But, unfortunately luck never seemed to be on your side, and he’s approaching you faster than you can run away. “Y/N.” He has you cornered, your back against the window as you glare daggers at him. What the hell did Robin say?
You refuse to answer, instead choosing to go back to pretending to read your book. Steve doesn’t say anything, he just places his hands on his hips and stares down at you.
You're stubborn though, so you refuse to look at him, no matter how badly you might want to. Steve, seemingly getting the hint, just lets out a loud sigh and says, “I’m going to get food from Bennys, do you want anything?”
Fuck. You loved Bennys. But, you didn’t want Steve to let you saying yes get to his head, so you just let out a harsh no.
“You haven’t eaten since you got here four hours ago, that’s not healthy.”
“I’m not hungry.” You respond dryly. Glancing up at him through your lashes. His lips are pursed and he’s got that look on his face he always gets when he’s annoyed. He shrugs, “Suit yourself.” And then leaves without another word.
For a moment, you’re almost shocked. You’d expected him to fight with you more about it, but you’re not mad that he didn’t.
You practically shoot up and beeline for Robin, who’s already gazing at you like she’s been prepared for this. “God, I hate him!” You groan, rubbing the bridge of your nose.
Robin snorts, hopping onto the countertop and picking at her nails, “Because he offered to buy you food?”
You shoot her a glare, “Because he’s pretending nothing happened between us.”
Robin chews on her bottom lip, glancing up from her chipped nails to a fuming you. “I think he’s just trying to be nice.”
“Since when were you his biggest defender? You were begging me to leave him not even two years ago!”
Robin winces at the memory. It was true, she used to absolutely loathe Steve with everything in her, but that was before and this was now. People change - and Steve Harrington was a prime example of that.
She stays silent, knowing there’s nothing she can say at this current moment that’ll make you feel better.
You force yourself to take a deep breath and lay your forehead onto the counter top, elbows wrapping around your head as you do. You’ve been arguing with yourself on where you stand with Robin lately. On one hand, she’d deliberately offered the one man you couldn’t bear to see a job at the one place you’d felt safe from him without even asking you first, and essentially ruined it for you forever. On the other, she was just a girl helping someone she loved get a job somewhere that wasn’t a shit hole like most of the places in town.
It just wasn’t fair that that place has to be here.
You sigh, squeezing your eyes shut, “I just need a second by myself. I’ll come back out if things get too busy.”
Robin just nodded, eyes glued to the floor as you walked past her and into the employee area.
Robin knows you have every right to be mad at her right now, but if risking your friendship was what it took for you to be happy, she’d do it everyday.
By the time Steve gets back the sun has already started to sink below the clouds, and there was only an hour left of your shift.
You were still in the back room, eyes puffy and red with the remnants of tears. It embarrassed you to admit, but you’d let a few tears and sniffles escape you. You were just so frustrated with your situation.
Steve walks behind the counter nonchalantly, large hands reaching into the white plastic bag and pulling out three styrofoam boxes.
Robin furrows her brows at this, only expecting two. “What’s the third one for?”
Steve’s silent for a moment, a ghost of a smile on his lips. Did you really think he was gonna let you go hungry? He knows you - knows you love Bennys like you love breathing. It’s the only reason he got it.
“Y/N.”
“But didn’t she-”
He shoots her a look that shuts her up as she realizes what he did. Her eyes crinkle as she smiles, and opens her box. “Do you want me to take it to her?”
Steve thinks for a moment about what you would want. Logically, he knows you would want Robin to bring it to you, but what would you have wanted before he screwed everything up?
“I’ve got it.”
He grabs your box in one hand and his own in the other, taking a deep breath before he pushes the door open with his hip. You're sitting there, arms crossed over your chest and nails between your teeth. A nervous habit of yours.
You look up, clearly expecting Robin, but your gaze immediately hardens once you realize it’s him. You push your chair out from under you harshly, it screeches across the floor as you do. You grab your jacket that hangs on the back of it and go to walk past him, but he blocks your path. “I brought you something to eat.”
“I said I wasn’t hungry.” You attempt to push past him, but he doesn’t let you. Instead, he gives you that knowing, motherly look of his. The same one he used on Dustin Henderson when he babysat him junior and senior year. “You haven’t eaten since noon, and,” He glances at his watch, “it’s almost seven, Y/N. Pretend it’s not from me, I don’t care, just please eat.”
You're at a standstill for a moment, the both of you staring at each other. You know Steve’s right, but you hate it. It makes you feel nauseous that he knows you so well.
Finally, after much hesitation, you finally sit back down in your chair. Your arms are still crossed and you’re refusing to look at him, but Steve can breathe easy knowing he’s finally getting at least something from you.
He sits across from you and slowly slides your box over to you, which you open lazily.
You wanted to yell at him to go - to leave you alone to eat in peace - but it almost felt nice to feel his presence again. If you focused on it long enough, you could almost pretend it was still that blissful time before senior year. When everything had been perfect.
Steve watches as you open the box and inspect the food carefully. He can tell by the way your eyes widen slightly that you’re surprised by what you see.
“Is this..” You trail off, heart constricting in your chest.
He nods, “You really thought I wouldn’t remember what you like? Please, give me a little credit.” He teases.
You never even knew he had it memorized.
A ghost of a smile plays on your lips, head flooding with memories of late winter nights spent at Bennys with Steve.
You allow yourself to glance up at him, cheeks flushing when you find he’s already staring at you. As soon as his eyes meet yours he smiles, a genuine, crinkle-at-the-corner-of-the-eye smile.
You eat in silence for the rest of your shift, but Steve doesn’t care. Being with you is more than enough.

November, 1981
Sophomore year is difficult for you.
Your grandma died just three days before Halloween, and it hit you hard. Steve was with you nearly all the time, not even saying anything, just holding you as you sobbed.
He never quite knew what to say to make you feel better because none of his own family was in his life. As far as was concerned, you were the closest thing he had to that.
Today marked a full week since your grandma passed, and you’d just gotten home from the funeral. He could see you now through his window, laying on your back unmoving in your bed, black dress still heavy on your body.
You’re not even crying, just staring at the ceiling. You’d always heard that grief presented itself in thousands of different ways, but you’d never been subjected to it yourself until now.
Memories of your grandmother and her infectious smile played on repeat in your mind, and sometimes if you focused hard enough, you could pretend she hadn’t died.
Your eyes squeezed shut as you did so, replaying a memory of her from your eleventh birthday party. You’d been crying for some reason you can’t even remember, and she’d stumbled upon you on the floor of your bathroom.
“Oh, Hunny, what happened?” She cooed, closing the door and sliding down next to you. She winced as she did, her knees popping the whole way down, but she didn’t complain. She just threw an arm over your shoulders and pulled you into her.
“I-I’m scared.” You whimpered, hugging your knees to your chest.
“Of what?”
You sniffled and looked into her loving eyes, “You’ll think it’s silly.”
She chuckled, forehead wrinkling with the movement, “No, I won’t.”
You swallowed, scratching at your arm nervously. “Are you sure?”
“I’m your grandma, I’d never laugh at you.”
You swallowed, letting your forehead hit your knees solemnly, “I don’t wanna grow up.” You admitted.
She didn’t say anything for a moment, which made you feel even worse. Getting older was natural and there was nothing you could do to stop it, but it’d hit you that you were growing out of your childhood.
You’d never be as innocent as you once had been, and at some point in your life you’ll never be mommy’s little girl again. And you hated that you just had to accept that.
Your grandma sighed, fingers drawing shapes onto your arm, “I know it’s scary growing up,” She murmured into your ear, “but it’s also good for us. We learn more as we grow, and we get to experience so many new things. Take me and your grandpa for example, we met when we were twenty five. If I'd never grown up, I never would have met him and fallen in love.”
The mention of your grandfather put a smile on your face. He was a sweet old man with a dashing mustache and a love for your grandma so strong you could feel it without even knowing him.
“I guess you’re right.” You sighed, laying your head against her side. She always knew how to make you feel better, it was like her special talent.
That’s why her death hurt so much, because you’d been talking to her less and less the older you got. It wasn’t something you did purposely, but with the move and all the new things that were happening in your life calling her had just never been at the top of your list. Now you wish it had.
You don’t even hear the knock in your door, you only notice Steve’s there when he’s scooting into bed next to you. You welcome him calmly, automatically falling into his open arms. He strokes your back comfortingly, leaving a soft kiss on your hairline. “How’re you feeling?”
You make a noise in the back of your throat, a mix between a whimper and a groan that shatters Steve’s heart. He hates seeing you hurt like this.
“That bad, huh?” He mumbles, squeezing you closer against him.
You choke out a sigh, “I just wish I would’ve called her. I had every chance too and I never did. What kind of- of granddaughter does that?” Your eyes are brimming with tears again, a sob tearing from your throat as you press your face closer into Steve’s neck. He smells like home.
He doesn’t mind that you’re soaking through his white shirt, in fact he barely even notices. “C’mon, Sweetheart. There was no way you could’ve known, and blaming yourself isn’t going to make you feel any better.”
“I-I just… I just wish I would’ve been better.” You hiccuped.
Steve immediately shakes his head, “No, no,” He stands and takes your hand, gently forcing you to your feet, “You’ve gotta get outta here, no way staying in this room all day is healthy for you.”
You sniffle and glance around your bedroom. Its usual warmth feels cold and empty.
“Where would we go?” You ask, gazing at Steve as he wipes your tears with his thumbs. “Anywhere.”
That's how you ended up at Bennys. Steve had recently gotten his license so you no longer had to bike everywhere.
The cloudy sky combined with the glaring overhead lights must wash you out, but Steve’s not sure you’ve ever looked prettier. The black dress compliments you perfectly, and call him selfish, but he thinks the glossiness in your eyes accentuates them so nicely.
You solemnly drink a sprite, biting on the straw occasionally and leaving a permanent indent in the plastic.
You’d heard of Bennys, apparently it was a Hawkins staple, but you’d never been yourself before now. For how popular it apparently was, it's not very busy, just a few stragglers.
You can see the chief of police, Jim Hopper, and a few of his cop buddies in one corner, a couple in a booth across from them, and two old fishermen at the bar.
“I’ve never been here before,” You murmur, watching as Steve’s head lifts from the menu to look up at you. “I’ve only been once with Tommy and Carol,” He says their names with so much disgust it nearly surprises you, “and it was really good.”
You knew Steve wasn’t the biggest fan of his friends, which was still something you found pretty weird. Why be friends with them if you couldn’t stand them? But you also understood Steve’s situation. He had affirmed his status as King Steve at the beginning of the school year, when he’d fought Mitch Mikealson and won. Ever since then he’d gotten more cautious with being seen with you.
And, yeah, it hurts sometimes to see him pretend you didn’t exist. Before, he’d still give you the occasional wave or smile, but now he didn’t even spare you a glance. But, you’d always remind yourself it was fine, because only you got to have the real him. The soft Steve, who’s boyish charm and honeynut eyes made you melt everyday.
You let out a soft huh, glancing over the menu before finally deciding on something. A plain cheeseburger with a side of cheesy fries. How American of you.
After you’ve given the waitress your orders, you both sit in a constricting silence. Steve isn’t sure of what to say to you right now or even how to approach the obvious elephant in the room, but you could hardly even focus on that.
If there’s one thing your grandma's death has taught you, it’s that you can’t let time escape you. You’d pushed off calling your grandma for months, and then suddenly you couldn’t anymore. What happens if you put off telling Steve how you feel for him, and then suddenly you no longer could? Would you feel regret like you do now?
You think you’ve known Steve long enough now to decipher how he’d react. A soft rejection, but without a loss of friendship. You think things would continue how they normally do - maybe a bit awkwardly at first but, still, as they normally do.
Then you consider the other option, which you thought to be the less likely one. On the off chance Steve does like you back, then your entire relationship would change. Would he kiss you in front of his friends? Scream from the rooftops that you were his and he was yours? Or would he hide you away, protect his reputation from your influence?
You weren’t sure.
“What’s going on in that big brain of yours?”
You smile softly at the phrase, glancing up at him through your lashes. He's leaning onto his elbows on the counter, cheeks squished between his hands. You think he looks innocent like this, and a glimpse of his seventh grade self flashes in his eyes, a time before King Steve even existed.
“Just… thinking.” You murmur, playing with your fingers in your lap.
Steve frowns, assuming you’re talking about your grandma, and he says, “I’m really sorry, Y/N. You know I'll be here for you every step of the way, right?”
You warm at his words, stomach twisting in knots. “I know,” You breathe, “we’re best friends. We have to be there for each other.”
Steve's heart constricts at the phrase. Best friends. Was that what he’d always be to you? He wants to be so much more - he wants to sweep you off your feet, show you just how much he loves you. If real love is something teenagers can’t experience, then he’s not sure he ever wants to, because whatever it is he’s feeling for you right now is practically engulfing him whole.
“Yeah,” He smiles weakly, “Best friends.”
Your eyebrows knit at the solemn look on his face, watching as he swishes the straw in his drink with his fingertip.
“Steve-” You begin, but the waitress is approaching you with your food before you can finish. Steve’s grateful for the interruption, not sure if he’s ready to answer whatever it was you were going to ask.
He distracts himself with his food, and you do the same. You're not sure why, but something about the way Steve said best friend made you feel uneasy. Did he not think you guys were? Or did he… did he want something else?
You blink the thought away, forcing yourself not to think of it.
But… what if…
You think of your grandma, how the regret of not calling her filled your entire body until you could barely breathe. Did you want that to happen with Steve? No, you didn’t. So there was only one solution.
The moon is up by the time you get in the car, and you allow Steve to drive you to your spot.
The hilltop where you first rode your bikes to last year had become almost like a comfort place for the both of you. You went anytime either of you were upset, and you always sat in the same positions. You, with your hands laid comfortably on your stomach and him with his hands behind his head. It was basically a routine at this point.
But, tonight, it’d be different. Because you were either about to ruin your friendship with Steve forever, or start something you’d never be able to turn away from.
You’re both silent, but while Steve seems peaceful, you’re anything but. Your mind is running wild with what-ifs, and you anxiously chew on your bottom lip. Just do it, you think, just do it.
“Steve?” You mumble, placing your hands behind your back and sitting up. Steve follows your lead, an eyebrow raised as he does. “Yeah?”
You squeeze your eyes shut and pull your knees into your chest, dress riding up until its hem is at the middle of your knees. “If I.. If I tell you something, you promise you won’t judge me? And- and nothing will happen to our friendship?”
He laughs nervously, “What’re you talking about?”
Just do it, you chant in your mind, Just do it.
You suck in a breath, “I love you. A lot. Like- more than I think should even be humanly possible, and I think I always have. It’s like- like this weight in my chest everytime I see you, you know? Because you’re you and I'm, well, I'm just me. And I tell myself there’s no way you could ever love me back but then you started acting all weird in the diner and I just- I had to know.” By the end of your rambling you’re panting softly, refusing to even look at Steve. You're too afraid of what you might see.
But Steve feels as if an angel herself has just blessed him. You love him?
You love him?
He feels too shocked to even move, heart practically beating out of his chest as he stares at you. The moonlight brings out your features so nicely, and your lips just look so- so kissable.
It’s crazy. He knows it is. But he’s waited so long, and he’s not sure how many times he can imagine the softness of your lips before he needs to feel it. So he does.
He connects his lips with yours so fast you barely even register it. It’s a soft peck, barely even a kiss really, but it’s perfect to you.
He pulls away quickly, hand on your cheek as he stares into your eyes. Only half of his face is visible in the darkness, but it’s enough for you. Because you’re plunging back in like you’ve been starved.
It’s messy, with clattering teeth and wandering hands. You find purchase in his hair, tugging slightly, and he lets you, groaning slightly at the feeling. His hands ghost of your waist nervously, and you reach down and place them comfortably on your hips.
It should be sinful how good he tastes - like strawberries eaten next to the pool on a warm summer day. “S- Steve,” You gasp between his lips, barely able to get the word out before he’s immediately diving back in.
You indulge in it for a few seconds more, before you’re gently pushing him away from you. He pulls back completely, removing his hands from your waist in a panic, “What’s - What’s wrong?” He pants.
You shake your head, assuring him it’s nothing like that. You take a breath, “What does… does this mean that you..?”
Steve has a big dopey smile on his face, tucking a peice of hair behind your ear, “That I love you?” He mumbles, “Because I do. So much. More than I think you’ll ever know.”
It’s those words that confirm what you’d thought for the past two years. Steve is your soulmate, someone you were always meant to find. Suddenly, you’re thankful for the move. Something that had once seemed life ruining has been the opposite - it brought you to your reason for living.
“Then what does this mean for us?” You question.
It’s then that Steve realizes this might not be all great like he thought it would be - because Tommy and Carol were still in the picture. He couldn’t just walk into school holding hands with you as if they hadn’t spent every waking day making fun of you. He never joined, always choosing to stay silent during their tangents, but he never stopped them either.
He swallows, studying your face. Would loving you be enough for him? Could he throw it all away, the parties, the friends, the popularity - if it meant he’d be able to be with you?
He’s not sure.
But what if he can have both? The popularity and you. He’d just have to keep your relationship a secret just like you had been doing for years, it was that simple! But, he doesn’t want to ruin the moment with you right now and get into that. So instead, he kisses you slowly again and murmurs, “We'll figure it out as we go.”
❣︎
July, 1986
It’s been two weeks since what you called The Tolerable Act. AKA, the day Steve Harrington brought you food and also made himself more tolerable.
You wouldn’t be going out of your way to talk to him, but if he approached you you no longer ran. Your responses were always short - but they were responses. Baby steps.
Today, when you walk into work Steve is already there stacking books and organizing shelves. His eyes are almost immediately drawn to you, and not just because he loves seeing you - no, this time, he notices something.
He thinks his heart drops into his stomach for a moment once he sees the guy with you. You're all smiles and giggles, playing with the hem of your lacy white shirt.
Jason Carver stands casually in the doorway, arm thrown above his head as he leans over you. Steve can’t see what he’s saying from here, but whatever it is, it’s making you blush.
Steve’s not even sure what comes over him - but he’s dropping the rest of the books he was organizing messily onto the shelf and speeding over to you before he can even think it through.
Jason notices first, his eyebrows furrowing as he eyes him. Steve gives a tight lipped smile, brown eyes darting between you and Jason.
Steve never really disliked Jason - he was a nice guy. A little pushy at times, but overall he didn’t seem too bad. But, now, watching Jason flirt with you like he knew anything about you made Steve’s stomach twist in the worst way.
Jason didn’t know you. He didn’t know anything about you! Steve knew it was selfish of him to expect you to be hung up on him forever like he was hung up on you, but did you have to bring Jason here?
“Harrington,” Jason said sultry smooth, bringing his arm down and stuffing his hands into his varsity jacket. He’d graduated last month and was still wearing that thing? Steve thought that was a douchey move. “I didn’t know you worked here.”
Steve hummed, “Started a couple weeks ago.”
Jason smirked, “Still working at dumps like this place, huh?” He joked. Steve could see the intentions behind what he said - they were a poke at Steve still living with his parents and not making it into college. He glances at you, but you don’t say anything, instead choosing to keep your eyes on the carpet.
“Still wearing your highschool jacket in public, huh?”
Jason’s gaze hardened just barely, enough for you to not notice, but Steve did. They both just stared at each other for a few moments, almost like they were challenging each other.
“Jason -” Both boys tore their gazes away from each other and onto you, “I’ll see you tonight, okay?” You usher, silently pushing him out. Jason bent down to kiss your cheek, eyes never leaving Steve’s as he did.
Once he was gone, you turned around and tried to make your way past him to clock in, but Steve stopped you. “Jason Carver? Really?”
Your nostrils flared, eyebrows knitting together as you gave him a harsh glare. “Who I talk to isn’t any of your business anymore.”
“That guys a total asshole!”
“And you aren’t?” You retorted, “I’m not sure if you remember, but let me remind you that-”
He cuts you off with a sigh, large hand running through his hair. His shirt rode up as he did, and you had to force yourself not to look at his tanned skin. “I remember.” He mumbled, “But, at least I've tried to better myself. Jason hasn’t! And he doesn’t deserve you, you’re so much better than he ever will be. I can’t believe you don’t realize that.” He took a breath, studying your face.
Jealousy is something Steve wasn’t used to feeling when it came to you. He’d always known that you were his and he was yours, and nothing would ever change that.
But, watching Jason Carver pull all those little giggles and shy smiles out of you that he used to - it hurt more than he liked to admit. His dad would tell him to: “grow up, she's just some girl after all.”
But you aren’t. Steve doesn’t think you ever were.
“Stop doing that!” You choke out. You’re more than fed up “Stop pretending that you’ve changed and that everything is- everything is fine! You played me for years, Steve. And as soon as I'm back together again you just show up here and remind me why I-” You pause, eyes going glassy and nose turning a shade of red, “why I can’t love you anymore. And it hurts - God, it hurts - but, I won’t allow myself to fall apart like I did again. And Jason- Jason likes me. I know he does. So don’t fucking ruin this for me.”
Steve’s silent, arms crossed over his chest as he processes your outburst. He knows he deserves it and it’s something he thinks he needs to hear, but that doesn’t make it any easier. You played me for years, Steve. Did you really think that?
Still, against his better judgment, he watches you as you turn your back to him and stomp into the back room.
You finally let out the sob you were holding in as soon as you’re out of sight, back hitting the cold stone wall. You hate him. Him and his stupid, stupid face and his horrible jokes. You hate that he can make you feel so many inexplicable things with just one sentence - He doesn’t deserve you.
If Jason doesn’t deserve you, then who does?
You avoid Steve your whole shift, and it’s easy, because Steve avoids you too. Robin called out sick which meant it was just the two of you and that made things so much worse.
You can feel his gaze lingering on you every time the clock ticks closer to your date, and it sends a shiver up your spine each time. If it’s because of your nerves about seeing Jason again or your undeniable longing for Steve, you’re not sure.
Once Jason arrives, Steve watches from behind the counter as you take Jason’s hand and let him lead you to his car, a toothy grin highlighting your face.
He sighs, crossing his legs where he stands and leaning onto his forearms. He feels helpless, like he’s an onlooker in his own life, watching you pull farther and farther away from him and not being able to do anything about it.
Jason’s car pulls away, and you watch as Bookish disappears from your line of sight. It feels foreign - leaving Steve behind to go with another guy. If you’d told yourself two years ago this was what your relationship would become, you never would’ve believed it.
“So, what’s the deal with you and Harrington?” Jason asks, stealing a glance at you.
You chew on your lip, cherry chapstick lingering on your tongue. “We used to be really close, but we kinda just…” You swallow and play with your fingers in your lap, “grew apart.”
Jason hums, fingertips drumming against the wheel as he drives. “You guys seemed more than close back there.”
You’re stumped. You can’t understand why Jason is so interested in this topic, which is something you really don’t want to talk about with him, and understandably so. You think up a quick excuse, “He’s just protective.”
He scoffs out a laugh, “Protective? No, it was more than that. It was like he- he loved you or something.” He says it like there’s no way that could be true. Like The Steve Harrington couldn’t ever love a girl like you.
“I don’t know. Maybe. Can we talk about something else, please?”
Jason doesn’t say anything and just drives silently. He’d told you he was taking you somewhere special but didn’t specify after that - and as you watch him drive deeper and deeper into the woods you’re beginning to get nervous.
He parks next to Lovers Lake, turning in the radio and immediately shifting his seat back.
You’d heard stories of guys doing this - taking a girl out to hook up with and disguising it as a date.
He's leaning over right as you realize what this is, and you pull away quickly, head nearly hitting the window. “Jason, I thought we were going out?”
“We are. I just thought.. we could have fun first.”
You swallow. This was wrong, you knew it was. Didn’t you deserve to go on a real date like other girls do? What made you so different from them?
But… Maybe this was a real date. Maybe this was what other girls did. And if that was true, shouldn’t you indulge? You’d always been aware your relationship with Steve was different than most other highschool relationships, so maybe you were finally getting a taste of the reality.
You kiss him first, practically surging forward. It’s hard and sloppy. It’s too much. It’s wrong.
You remind yourself that this is what real girls do.
You kiss him harder, holding back the whimper that begs to escape from your throat as he slips his tongue into your mouth. He tastes like cigarettes and mint - nothing like Steve.
He pulls you by your hips over the center console awkwardly, your legs banging against the dashboard as you move, but he never breaks apart.
You settle on his lap, letting him push and pull you anyway he wants. He’s in no way soft - wandering hands never asking for permission as he slips them under your shirt. This is wrong, this is wrong, this is wrong-
“Jason-” You breathe between his hungry lips, attempting to push away, but he grabs the back of your neck and forces you against him again. Your hands push at his chest hard, and he’s so shocked he lets you go.
“What’s your problem?” He pants, eyebrows knitted together.
You want to sob- because what the hell are you doing? Kissing Jason Carver in his car in the middle of nowhere? This is wrong. If this is what other girls do, then you don’t want to be like them.
“Can we-” You suck in a breath, shifting uncomfortably on his lap, “Can we just take a break? Maybe actually talk and try to get to know each other?”
He stares at you coldly for a few moments, blue eyes searching your face for something you’re not sure of. Then he’s laughing - as if you’ve said the funniest thing in the world. His chest convulses as he does, and he attempts to kiss you again but you pull away.
His laughter immediately stops and his face contorts into anger, his nostrils flared. “Are you kidding me?”
“Jason-” You attempt, but he’s pushing you off of him before you can get the word out. You land in the passenger seat uncomfortably, legs at an awkward angle but you feel too unnerved to move.
“You came onto me first!”
He was right, you had kissed him first. It was your fault he thought he’d be getting something else tonight. “I know and i’m sorry, but-”
He cuts you off with a laugh, tongue running over his teeth like a hungry animal. “I mean- there’s no way you’re being serious right now, right?” He asks, “Why the hell do you think I brought you out here? To talk? I thought you were smarter than that.”
Your eyes go wide, jaw hanging open as you process his words. Had you really been so stupid?
He points an accusing finger at you, “If you think any guy is going to want you beyond just fucking you then you’re in for a treat. Now get the fuck out of my car.”
“Jason-”
“Get out!”
So you do. You stumble a bit as your feet hit the grass, barely having any time to close the door before he’s speeding off.
The tears come before you can stop them, arms wrapping around yourself as you stare out into the lake.
The water makes the air feel cooler, so goosebumps form across your skin and cause a shiver up your spine. You don’t know how to get home from here - or to the bookshop. But there is one place you can think of.
You're not sure how long you walk, you just know by the time you reach the hill your feet hurt and your calves feel practically numb.
You collapse onto the grass with a soft groan, immediately hugging your knees to your chest. The tears had long since stopped and were replaced with occasional hiccups, eyes glassy but the tears never falling.
You stare up at the sky, finding comfort in all of the familiar constellations. Lately they’d been the only constant thing in your life, the one thing you knew would always be there and would never go away.
You hate that Steve was right more than you’d like to admit. He doesn’t deserve you, you’re so much better than he ever will be. What right did he have to say something like that to you? It makes you almost nauseous.
Steve Harrington had become something of an anomaly to you over the past year. You’d been told thousands of times that he’d changed by Robin - hell, Steve himself had been making an effort to show you that he’d never make the same mistakes he had again, but it was like you couldn’t accept it.
Your heart had subconsciously built up brick walls to protect yourself from ever being hurt like that again, and any mention of Steve Harrington threatened to tear them down.
You sigh, forehead dipping down to rest on your knees. You’re not sure how you’re going to get home, but right now it’s the last thing in your mind.
“Y/N?”
You’re head shoot’s up, neck craning to see the eyes of the person in front of you.
It doesn’t surprise you once you realize it’s Steve, because who else would be out here this late?
“Hi.” You mumble, head immediately going back to lay on your knees comfortably.
He sits down next to you cautiously, plastic bag falling next to him as he does. He subconsciously makes sure to leave enough distance between the both of you so he doesn’t scare you off. “Where’s your date?”
You close your eyes, breaths coming in shallow as you shift uncomfortably. Your head lols lazily to the side, allowing yourself to get a full view of his face. His eyebrows are raised and his arms are behind him and holding his torso up.
“Probably out being a douche somewhere.”
He chuckles, “That bad, huh?”
You nod, a soft smile playing on your lips. “Definitely wasn’t the best date ever.” Not like you had many to compare it to.
“I won’t say it even though I really want to- but just know i’m thinking it really, really hard-”
You roll your eyes, “Just say it.” You huff.
He doesn’t hesitate, “I told you so.”
You mentally conclude that Steve should not be allowed to be right ever. “What are you doing here?” You ask.
Steve’s gaze falls to the grass below, throat bobbing as he swallows. “I needed to clear my head.”
You hum in response and decide not to push it, instead letting your knees stretch in front of you as your hands fall behind you. Your eyes fall to the white Walmart bag next to him and you gesture to it with your head, “What’s in the bag?”
Steve reaches over and pulls out a six pack of cheap beer, the kind you drank when you were trying to get stupid drunk. “I wasn’t planning on having any company, so I hope six’s enough for you.”
You snort, watching as he rips one out of its packaging and hands it to you. You ignore the brush of your hands as you do.
It pops open loudly, and you immediately bring it to your lips, ignoring the burning in your throat as it slides down roughly. Steve does the same, and you both sit in a comfortable silence and drink your respective drinks.
You’re not sure if it’s the alcohol, but you can’t stop looking at him. Thoughts of how pretty he is run through your mind - but so do others. Like questions of how you became strangers who knew everything about each other so quickly.
“Do you ever wonder about what things would be like if.. if we hadn’t broken up?” You question quietly, eyes lingering on the side of his face.
He doesn’t move for a moment, lips thinning out into a line. He breathes in through his nose, “Sometimes I do. But every time I remember how things are between us I have to stop, because lying to myself almost hurts more than the reality.”
Your hands tighten into fists by your side, and you force back another gulp of the warm drink. “How did we even get here?” You suddenly laugh out, “It doesn’t even feel natural.”
Steve shrugs, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Honestly? I’m not really sure. Sometimes it feels like one day I was waking up with you and then the next I wasn’t.” Well, technically that is what happened.
You're not sure if it’s the alcohol that gives you courage, but you finally admit, “Sometimes I hate you for turning us into this.” You mutter, “Sometimes I hate myself for not trying to fix it. But, sometimes I think that is how things were always going to turn out - that maybe we were never meant to be in each other's lives and we somehow screwed up Gods plans and this is our punishment.”
“I don’t think he means it as a punishment.” Steve breathes, finally letting himself look at you, “I think it’s more of a lesson. A reminder, maybe.”
You snort, “Well, I hate this lesson, and I’m ready for it to be over.”
“Me too.”
You don’t argue when Steve scoots closer to you so your legs are touching, shorts rubbing against each other awkwardly.
You and Steve share an actual conversation - one without any arguing or resistance from you. It’s a conversation like you used to have.
You don’t argue when Steve offers you a ride home, showing that his beer is still half-way full. You don’t argue when he tells you good night, in fact you bask in it.
That night when Steve goes to bed, he watches your light flick on and your shadow approach the window. You stand there for a while - contemplating he thinks - and he hopes that you do it. That you open the blinds and show him that everything would be okay again.
But you don’t. You flick the light back off, and go to bed. Leaving the blinds closed.

twst food culture compilation
Tumblr media
Please note: this post does NOT include all food-related lore in TWST (for example, you won’t find a lot of information about individual characters’ food preferences or personal experiences with food here). This post ONLY talks about the food culture, notable locations, cultural dishes, and unique foods of the Twisted Wonderland world at large (ie countries, specific towns and cities, etc).
I did my best to scour for info, but I’ll update if I find anything new or details I missed the first time around.
General and/or Unspecified Location
There is a seasoning called “pure azure salt”, which is said to be rare, even in the Coral Sea.
Twisted Wonderland has a fruit called ruby berries (which taste “like freshly picked strawberries”).
There is frozen mint with a “refreshing profile” that grows in icy mountainous areas.
There exists Walrus-brand oyster sauce. Trey uses this to cook hamburger steak for his younger siblings. He says the oyster sauce provides a "nice savory flavor" with considerable depth. Trey also jokes about adding it to chestnut tarts in book 1.
There are mentions of irl Japanese foods such as konjac and takoyaki, but so far no place of origin in Twisted Wonderland has been sited.
Like in the real world, celebrities like Vil and Neige are used to promote products (including food and drink) in commercials, on social media platforms, etc. For example, in book 5, we see Neige advertising Red Apple Soda and Vil using his Magicam account to promote the apple juice made by Epel's family.
There's a popular dish called "pumpkin carriage stew". The insides of a pumpkin are scooped out and the shell is filled with a creamy stew, which made it difficult to carry over to tables. It would sell out every day at the cafe Ruggie used to work at.
Some restaurants call their spaghetti with meatballs "starry night spaghetti", named after the tale of two dogs who shared a spaghetti kiss under a starry sky. It is said that sharing spaghetti with meatballs with someone outside would lead to true love.
Hunting is sport as well as something done for food.
Briar Valley
General
Cotton candy is a classic snack food sold at Briar Valley food stalls. The way it is prepared resembles spinning threads, which is considered a blessed occupation (as there was a period in Briar Valley's history when no one was able to spin thread, so some clever individual tinkered around and made cotton candy instead).
In the battlefield (~400 years ago, during the human-fae war), soldiers would roast rats and lizards to eat if they didn't have rations or other ingredients.
There is little in the way of modern technology and electricity; typically, one would prepare dishes and/or collect ingredients by hand (such as via fishing) or by using magic.
Magic is used to light fires for cooking. There is little risk for fire accidents since magical fires automatically go out when you go to sleep.
Because Briar Valley is located to the north, it can get very chilly. When the snow melts, it turns into very cold freshwater.
According to Lilia, “berries are a must-have, especially at birthdays parties” in Briar Valley. They are famous for its berry juice.
Coral Sea
General
According to Jade, there are no fires in the Coral Sea. Therefore, most of the food consumed is raw.
A month-long land boot camp first established by a mermaid princess that married a human prince teaches merpeople fire safety and how to eat food as part of its curriculum.
It's rare for merfolk to eat anything sweet, as those kinds of foods aren't readily avaliable in the sea.
The Atlantica Memorial Museum has the mermaid princess's "silver hair comb" on display. This, of course, refers to the "dinglehopper"--a common fork. This implies that merpeople (such as the mermaid princess referenced in many stories) fused to be unaware of the eating utensils on land.
Azul's mother owns the "hottest restaurant" in the Coral Sea. It started off as a small place, but has since expanded to have a large staff.
Couples from the Coral Sea frequently request rainbow dessert soup with trident cookies for their weddings. To eat it, you use the trident cookie to stir the sweet sky-blue soup, which then turns the soup into seven colors of the rainbow. This is a dish that is only served for special occasions in the Coral Sea, and it is typically served warm.
Jade says that he was surprised to see that many land dwellers eat their fruit without the peel; this would imply that those from the Coral Sea typically eat their foods with the skin/peel left on, or as-is.
Playful Land Amusement Park
All food and drink are handed out for free.
They serve food in large quantities, such as tuna, entire tart cherry pies (with cinnamon, clove, and crushed nuts in the filling) and a whole peppery roasted chicken. The park encourages consuming in excess.
Other food items being offered include fried tuna fish and sparkling apple juice. The juice comes with an umbrella stuck in the opening to prevent bugs from getting in. You remove it before drinking.
They have ice-cream in many flavors! We see strawberry milk in the related event.
The park had candy and popcorn in “apple core” flavor. Supposedly, this is a taste inspired by the story of the Generous Fox giving a Puppet Boy an apple core instead of a whole apple because “the puppet wished to have a core”.
There is a “Candy Road”, a street lined with shops that have caramel lollipops, chewy candy, marshmallows, cookies, chocolate crunch, and lots of other sugary treats!
Their chocolate crunch has 12 different charms thrown in.
The third most popular souvenir are pasta snacks in the shape of the Friendly Fox and Gentle Cat. The second most popular is a tin of plain cookies in the shape of the Friendly Fox and cocoa cookies in the shape of the Gentle Cat. Finally, the most popular are apple core flavored candies!
Sage's Island
Night Raven College
Pomefiore holds a welcome party for the freshmen, which includes a fancy dinner.
Scarabia regularly holds banquets, typically at Kalim's request.
Heartslabyul holds so-called "unbirthday parties" whenever it is a day that does NOT fall on a Heartslabyul student's birthday.
The dorm members of Scarabia and Heartslabyul pitch in to prepare for banquets and unbirthday parties.
Mr. S's Mystery Shop stocks food items, such as candies (which Floyd often buys), tuna cans, and ingredients for baking (this is where Deuce and Yuu pick up things for the chestnut tart in book 1). Sam also sells food items that he seems to have made himself, like the Mystery Drink (which Octavinelle eventually buys the rights to).
The school cafeteria is said to have delicious breads.
Once a month, a famous bakery from out of town serves their goods at NRC. Their stock includes items such as chocolate croissants, egg sandwiches, yakisoba bread and cream bread ("cronuts and bear claws"), roast beef sandwiches, red bean buns ("hot dog buns"), and deluxe minced cutlet sandwiches ("deluxe ham and cheese"/"grilled cheese" in the localization). They sell out fast!
The cafeteria at NRC serves food buffet style; the cafeteria is kept warm with magic from fire fairies which are supplied with dry firewood every day.
Master Chef ("Culinary Crucible") is an elective course at NRC that teaches students how to cook. It is meant to curb the expenses related to eating out and to help the boys maintain balanced diets and learn how to take care of themselves. Judges for this course are randomly selected from the students and staff (prior to this methodology, people would bribe the judges for extra credit).
While taking Master Chef, students help with preparing meals in the cafeteria in exchange for part-time pay.
The instructors for Master Chef are ghosts who were professional chefs at five-star restaurants when they were alive.
There are various locations on campus where the students go to fetch ingredients for Master Chef. This includes an on-campus farm, ranch, windmill... and even the dormitories themselves!
Octainvelle has the Mostro Lounge, described by Jade as "a meeting place for gentlemen" where fighting between dorms is prohibited. While dining there, students are expected to abide by Octavinelle's rules. It is run by the manager and founder, Azul, who made a deal with the headmaster to get the rights to open the establishment. NRC gets 10% of the revenue the Mostro Lounge makes.
The Mostro Lounge has a one-drink purchase minimum.
The Mostro Lounge also operates food stalls and/or sells food at many school events, such as the cultural festival in book 5 and the interdorm magical shift/spelldrive tournament in book 2.
It is mostly Octavinelle students who staff the Mostro Lounge, but there are occasions when outside students are brought in as extra help. Ruggie has worked there part-time, as well as Jack, Ace, Deuce, and tons of other students.
NRC opens its school gates to the local townspeople for a period leading up to Halloween; during this time, they distribute candy and other sweets (such as Sam's waffles, served with jam made from NRC's apples) to guests. There's also a party on Halloween night where lots of food is served.
The woods behind the campus have chestnuts, which the main crew collect for an apology tart to Riddle.
The Botanical Garden has some edible plants growing there. These include strawberries, which the Science Club cultivates.
Unbirthday Party Rules (related to food)
Rule 25: There must be a tea party on the 5th of every month.
Rule 29: You must not eat the Queen's tarts without her permission.
Rule 153: The only tea you may drink in the evenings is herbal tea.
Rule 186: Do not eat hamburger steak on Tuesdays.
Rule 256: You must not drink lemonade with honey past 8 pm.
Rule 271: You must get up from the table within 15 minutes after eating lunch.
Rule 339: Your post-meal tea must be lemon tea with 2 sugar cubes.
Rule 529: If you eat steak on the night of a full moon, a cat must play the violin afterwards.
Rule 562: Do not bring chestnut tarts to an unbirthday party.
Rule 648: You must brush your teeth 2 times on nights when you eat turkey.
Rule 703: Whoever comes in 2nd place in a croquet match must serve tea to the Queen (dorm leader) the next day.
If the dormouse wakes up at an unbirthday party, you are to paint its nose with jam.
Coffee is forbidden; tea must be served at all occasions except for birthdays.
According to Cater, sweets are mandatory at unbirthday parties.
Dwarves' Mine & Silent Woods
There is an abundance of wildlife in these areas; Jade often goes hiking and foraging, making note of what he finds. He uses the plants to make his own tea blends (which are sometimes added to the Mostro Lounge's menu) and the herbs, plants, and mushrooms to experiment with in cooking.
There are fish to be found at the lake, including massive catfish.
The Foothill Town
There is a port for mainly cargo ships located at the southwest part of town. It's called Crane Port! The east side has a port as well, but that one is moreso for passengers. Crane Port has been getting fewer and fewer people passing through lately (until Port Breeze Fest, in which the NRC boys run food stalls and help to revive business in the area). Group A makes churros, Group B makes waffles, Group C makes salads, Group D makes cotton candy, and Group E makes clam chowder.
A popular restaurant in the Crane Port area serves foods like french fries and burgers. Their signature menu item is a donut made from potatoes. Actually, this restaurant specializes in potato dishes!
There is a chain restaurant on the island that also has locations elsewhere, including in Ace's hometown. He mentions that there are slightly different flavors to the sauces depending on which location you go to.
The town also has other eateries that are more geared towards students, seeing as it exists on an island with two notable magic schools to the north and the south. Cater often mentions going into town to take pictures at cafes.
There is a famous patisserie there. You have to line up early in the morning before opening time to get your hands on one of their strawberry tarts (or anything, really!).
Scalding Sands
General
The Scalding Sands seems to borrow heavily from Middle Eastern cultures. For example, some of the Scalding Sands’ traditional dishes include, but are not limited to: roasted lamb, moussaka, döner kebabs, shawarma, flatbreads, potato and bean spreads, and seafood sautés.
Tea is a popular beverage; it is had at every meal and break. People can drink up to 10 cups of tea a day!
The Scalding Sands specializes in black tea. For entertaining guests, special tea leaves are used.
In the Scalding Sands, they brew their tea leaves loose and without an infuser. This makes the tea very strong and bitter. To counteract the powerful flavor, people add lots of sugar to their tea and drink it with sweets.
“Luxurious” tea is very sweet, since sugar was once very expensive (due to a shortage of it, according to the localization) and considered a luxury.
Due to the hot weather, people often toss herbs into their tea to make it more refreshing to drink.
Coffee is also popular; there are many cafes that serve coffee and tea. The Scalding Sands is known in particular for their spiced coffee, which has a very distinctive flavor. This coffee is brewed without a filter, and some cafes do “coffee divinations” (reading the shapes and patterns of the grounds and the water droplets that remain after drinking to tell the fortunes of customers).
There are a lot of unique spices in their dishes. This is especially true of banquet dishes. However, a variety of dishes are still served at these occasions.
Kalim describes the Scalding Sands as being “big on stewed stuff” like curries.
In Kalim’s hometown, people love to gather around the table and talk over a meal.
Halloween in the Scalding Sands is celebrated by feasting on a variety of dishes. The idea is that the food must be abundant so that the ghosts that return to the world of the living for the night may also have their fill.
It used to be difficult for the people of the Scalding Sands to obtain water due to the lack of rainfall, hot climate, and expansive desserts. However, Kalim’s ancestors utilized the country’s rivers to reach other countries and to trade their textiles, spices, tea leaves, and other local goods with foreign lands. It was particularly impressive at the time, as they were the first traders from the Scalding Sands to sail (back then, accurate nautical maps were not a thing). This maritime pioneering is what would make the Asim family their massive fortune.
The Asims and other merchants heavily invested in technologies and innovations to make the area more sustainable and potable water more accessible.
The waterways of the country eventually developed into canals and communities formed around them as trade hubs. The canals are also used to host ferryboats for locals and tourists to sightsee, boosting the tourism industry. This also made access to water much easier for the residents, and the water helps to cool the temperature.
Silk City
The bazaars in Silk City are where locals do their shopping for various goods and staple foods like vegetables and fish. There are also stalls with gourmet food that cater to tourists.
Camel Bazaar is named after camels, which were used to transport people, goods, and luggage before Silk City’s canals and roads came to be. There also used to be an oasis where the camels would rest and drink after long treks; this oasis became a center for commerce and eventually evolved into a marketplace. To this day, the name “Camel” has stuck, even if people use trucks, ships, and cars more than camels.
There is also Zahab (”Gold”) Market, which is popular with tourists for shopping (especially for souvenirs!) but also has swindlers and pickpockets mixed in with regular customers.
Many snacks are sold! There’s camel milk chocolate, cookies drizzled in syrup, sunflower seeds, pistachios, chickpeas, all kinds of nuts, dried fruits (including dates), jams, jellies, syrups, starfruit, dragonfruit, etc.
(Lamb) shawarma is described as meat roasted on a spit and served on baguettes or pita bread. Because grease drips off while it cooks, it is “surprisingly healthier” than one expects it to be. Shawarma is also customarily served with vegetables (tomatoes, onions, olives, jalapenos, etc.) and sauces (yogurt, garlic, chili, hummus (a paste of garlic and chickpeas), mayo basil, etc).
There is a vendor that can supply large quantities of sweet and refreshing coconut water; this is because they’re used to providing for Kalim’s extravagant and excessive tastes. They create a hole in the top and provide straws to poke in and use to drink the water. The coconut flesh inside is also edible.
There are a lot of bread stalls; bread is also another staple food, and it comes in many sizes, shapes, and textures. Small roadside bakeries have wood-fired ovens which allow them to serve bread fresh to customers.
One stand sells baguettes that are taller than many children; these “tower baguettes” are a famous Fireworks Festival treat. People say that if you eat a big one, you’ll never go hungry again! The saying comes from a story of a young man that shared bread with hungry children. It’s because of that story that baguettes are considered a good luck food that many vendors sell on holidays.
The Camel Bazaar sells an elastic ice-cream (based on a similar irl frozen Turkish confection). It is kneaded on a pole and stretched out; customers are meant to “catch” it in their cups and cones. It’s food performance art! All the stretching makes the texture very unique.
There’s a fruit stand that is only open on festival days which sells a Silk Melon sundae; the fruit is hollowed out to host ice-cream (of the same melon flavor!) and toppings which make it very photogenic.
Starfruit is usually put in salads, according to Trey.
The dragonfruit sold is recommended to be eaten with honey. You drizzle it on top of a slice and eat!
Silk City’s signature fruit is the Silk Melon. It is called that because of its silky texture and sophisticated sweetness. It can’t be found in many other countries. The man of legend that shared his bread with a starving child is said to split a melon with his friend, even though he did not have much money to spare. It’s because of this tale that people started saying if you share Silk Melon with someone, it would make your friendship or romance last forever. Now the fruit is a festival staple and considered a symbol of good fortune.
In the past, water was only used for irrigation due to its scarcity. Some gave up on farming after years of trying to produce crops and failing—but others refused to give up and cultivated the land to made it fertile, something which future generations would reap the benefits of.
The fruits and veggies sold Camel Bazaar are freshly picked and grown locally. Jamil says this is possible because the arid climate actually helps with growing crops of high quality. Produce raised with less water concentrates flavor since the final fruit will have a higher sugar content. Because of this, Silk City’s produce is prized by chefs all over Twisted Wonderland. Of course, you can get them at an affordable prize in Camel Bazaar!
Shaftlands
General
The Shaftlands are famous for its jeweled pineapples.
The Shaftlands spans a large area of land and has drastically different climates depending on the part of it you're looking at. Therefore, we can deduce that foods and customs surrounding food are very different as well.
City of Flowers/Fleur City
The city’s food culture seems to be inspired by real world Paris, or at the very least, France.
Bread is a local specialty, particularly very buttery kinds. As you walk down the streets, you can smell bread baking. The City of Flowers has 10x (or more) the variety of bread that Sage's Island offers, and has an abundance of bakeries too.
Bread-making is popular in the City of Flowers. The windmills at the edges of the city grind grains to produce fresh flour. There are also watermills powered by the Soleil River to assist with making flour.
Because wheat is plentiful in this area, some of it is also used for desserts. One such confection is financier, which is made from a combination of wheat flour, almond flour, and butter. It resembles a gold bar, so eating one is said to bring financial prosperity.
Lately, gluten-free desserts have been trendy.
A dessert that does not use wheat flour is macarons. In the City of Flowers, they are yellow and shaped like bells to honor the Bell of Salvation which oversees the community and provides magic that helps rare plants grow in the area. The filling is a ganache with dried bits of grapes and apples.
Grape juice is popular in the City of Flowers, as the fruit is another specialty. You can buy the grapes raw and eat them as is, or ask a vendor to crush it (skin still on!) into juice for you. Some buy the grapes to give as gifts!
The grapes are grown in vineyards right outside of the city, and the farmers are constantly experimenting to improve their breeds. They taste very rich, tangy, and sweet.
The City of Flowers is also known for its many specialty cheese shops. Together, bread and cheese are called the staple foods of the city, and are sometimes eaten together. One specialty cheese shop the boys visit sells baguettes topped with ham and rich melted cheese.
The city considers goats a symbol of good luck, so they are treated with care. There are many community goats (which are just as common as domesticated cats or dogs) allowed to roam freely in the city. It is said that if you treat the community goats with kindness, they will come rescue you in your time of need.
Goat milk is used in some of the specialty cheeses produced by the city. The grapes mentioned earlier are also made into fruit compotes to go with the cheeses.
Harveston
This village has many dishes that borrow from a mixture of irl Nordic cultures. There’s also an emphasis on having hometown pride and the community itself being very close.
As expected, many of Harveston's dishes feature apples: apple pie, grilled and roasted apples, apple salad, apple pound cakes, etc.
Epel's family has an apple orchard that has been in the family for generations. They grow different kinds of apples throughout the year. Many of his neighbors are older people who also raise produce, and they help each other out when they're short on hands. The community is very tightly knit because of this, and treat each other like extended family.
Harvest season (autumn) is the busiest time of year; once that's over, everyone comes together to have a party. It's a potluck style celebration where everyone brings a homemade dish or homegrown food to share.
Harveston preserves its produce (such as apples and wild greens) by pickling them and serving them in salads. The bright colors are maintained by boiling the produce in a copper pot, which stabilizes the pigments. It's wisdom passed down from generation to generation.
There is also pickled herring, traditionally eaten on bread. Brining preserves the fish while it is still raw and doesn't dry it up. It's ready to eat right out of a jar, no cooking required.
The local stew is not very thick. It tastes sweet because of the added vegetables and savory because of the tender meat in it. There is also a salmon broth sprinkled with herbs which is described as "melty".
Fruits and vegetables can be packed in snow to keep them preserved. This method is called “snow aging” and prevents evaporation. In the old days, the villagers would build whole farms out of snow. In modern day, they just shovel the snow into a barn. This creates a natural fridge that will naturally thaw in the summers. Snow aging in this manner makes the produce sweeter and more nutritious.
The next town over is a three-hour bike ride. The roadside has many apple trees you can enjoy during the trip.
You can easily pick apples off the branch and eat them fresh! Farmers can snack on apples while picking.
Harveston is surrounded by tall mountains that are snow-capped all year, the most famous one being Mt. Moln. The greenery around Harveston is due to the spring water irrigation which runs down from Mt. Moln.
Most of Harveston’s land is used for orchards, and apples are their main produce. They also make many products using those apples like chips, rice crackers, and cookies.
Fall apples are sweeter, while winter ones are more sour. Winter apples are unique to Harveston.
Harveston also grows a lot of garlic.
Harveston farming is done the old fashioned way, as the predominantly older population distrusts chemical fertilizers and biotechnology.
Some villagers like the mayor and Marja (Epel’s grandma) adjust their accent to communicate with people from outside the village. Marja says she switches up when she’s selling goods in another town, since it can be tricky for non-Harveston locals to understand.
Hand washing before eating is a must! They take the act very seriously in Harveston. Stories say the miners of the past used to get very sick due to poor hygiene, but their health improved drastically once they started washing regularly with soap and water. It was difficult for them to get treatment because the town is so remote and far from hospitals or doctors, so the best thing is stressing prevention. This why the townspeople are sticklers about hand washing now.
To wash the Harveston way, you plunge your hands into ice cold water and make it all foamy with soap. You also scoop the water up and splash your face as well (as the miners from the past would also do this).
Apple Square is the main festival venue; it has many vendor stalls in an area called Kokko (which means “Bonfire”) Market. The Sledathon is the most lucrative time of year for the townsfolk.
Many of their products are made locally by the older folks in town. The goods aren’t trendy or very fancy, but they’re high-quality and made with Harveston pride.
The stalls give apple juice, apple tea (which has fruit pieces floating in it), and apple ginger tea for free. The apple juice is one of Harveston’s most popular products.
Giant five-meter apple pies are made for the Sledathon. They’re considered one of the main attractions, and you can get a slice from them free of charge.
There are other stalls that sell regular apple pie too. Every vendor has their own style, from the apples used to the crust and baking technique.
There are other kinds of fruit pies for sale, but apples are the most popular and “special” ones. The Beautiful Queen had a preference for apple pies, so the townspeople do too.
Harveston apple pies have such an entrancing flavor that the nearest city has stores that stock them. Critics say that Harveston apple pies make anyone drool and that the best way to convince someone to do you a favor is to gift one.
Harveston holds an apple competition to find the reddest apple. This is because the Beautiful Queen prized beautifully red apples. In the past, the townspeople would offer the reddest apple from the season’s harvest to the Beautiful Queen. Over time, it evolved into the apple competition.
Kokko Market makes pancake balls from a flour batter and top it with jam. It’s prepared in a pan and with methods similar to takoyaki, coming out crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Pancakes also come in a square form. In Harveston, pancakes are baked in the oven instead of on the stove. Some people cook pancakes in the fireplace too; this makes them tender, thick, and pudding-like.
There are many grains used for bread: sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, oats, flax seeds, sesame seeds, rye, wheat...
Barbeque is served for large gatherings and celebrations.
Cooking tends to be done in the fireplace instead of on a stove, especially in the case for stews. It keeps the room warm in winter while the food cooks.
Harveston has a bean and fruit soup. Most other places serve it cold, but those in Harveston sometimes enjoy it warm. It’s a thick consistency and the fruit in it has been dried.
When setting the dining table, people in Harveston leave one extra plate out. This tradition comes from a story about a traveler visiting a family’s house and being surprised by the messy state of it. The traveler cleaned the house and cooked a nice meal for the family. From this story came the belief that as long as you leave a plate at your table, you’ll never want for food or go hungry.
Sandwich cakes are common party centerpieces. They are made with bread and vegetables, topped with shrimp, deviled eggs, olives, apples, and salmon slides arranged in a rose shape. The frosting on it is made from mayonnaise and sour cream, making sandwich cakes more salad than dessert.
They sell cherries and other berries by volume. Also sold are vegetables and juice, freshly squeezed.
Because Harveston is located in a mountainous region, there are rare varieties of mushrooms to be found. These can be served in a traditional mushroom soup, which can be finicky to prepare (so usually only experts make it). Mushrooms are also cooked in butter and served in sandwiches.
Mushrooms, herbs, and flowers are foraged from the nature (both public mountains and private woods). Locals usually don’t buy plants that are wild when they can pick it themselves. Instead, they’re sold to tourists.
Good foraging spots on Moln Mountain are kept secret so people don’t overharvest. The mountains are dangerous in winter, so foraging has to be done in spring or summer.
Harveston brines raw fish like salmon in a mixture of salt, sugar, pepper, and fill. In the old days, brined salmon was buried in sand to let it ferment.
Fish is dried to preserve it and to enhance the flavor. Before there were proper roads, it was hard to bring in food for the winter, so Harveston relied on foods preserved in the spring. They last for a long time and have many uses (such as in soup stock or to eat straight up). To this day, preserved meats and vegetables are a local specialty and new methods such as roasting have been developed for preservation.
Sunset Savanna
General
The food here appears to be inspired by African cultures of the real world.
There is floral cacao in the Sunset Savanna. It bears fruit only once every 10 years.
Gummy bugs are popular and a Halloween staple.
The people of the Sunset Savanna value living in harmony with nature and will go out of their way to adapt to the land (due to the high population of beastmen, who have animal ancestors). Because of this, they oppose change that could damage the environment. There are some parts of this arid country that still rely on wells for their drinking water needs. They also hold the Tamashina-Mina festival every year to pray for rain.
Sautéed mutton is a common meal in this country. Leona brags that the Sunset Savanna is top notch when it comes to cooking meats.
The bananas of the Sunset Savanna are starchy and resemble potatoes (similar to plantains). They are steamed and served as a staple food. They’re faintly sweet and are actually very light and easy to digest.
It’s easier to grow fruit instead of wheat and rice in their climate.
Rice crepes, another staple, are served with a stew that you pour over it. The stew comes in variants such as a white fish stew simmered in tomato sauce, spinach and potato stew, beef stew, etc. There are also many side dishes you can enjoy with the crepes. The crepes aren’t meant to be eaten alone, as they taste too sour solo.
The phrase “that’s the Circle of Life” is a proverb that has been around for ages. The strong eat the weak, then when the strong die, their bodies become nutrients for the grass which feeds the next generation of prey animals. Life comes “full circle”, and the proverb indicates this delicate balance.
The Sunset Savanna is famous for its coffee. It tastes spicy, not bitter, because the custom is to add spices to the drink.
Food prep performances seem to be common for the wealthy; Leona mentions seeing big fish filleted before being served.
Yogurt is considered a “healthy dairy” and is typically served for breakfast.
Elephant Graveyard
The Elephant Graveyard, once considered a scary and lawless place (the “shadow lands” which were not a part of the original kingdom), has become a tourist destination.
They are known for selling vanilla cookies shaped like bones.
The hot springs at the Elephant Graveyard have kettles hidden by the steam. The hot water vapor cooks onsen tamago (a traditionally Japanese irl dish) and puddings. It imparts a slightly salty and sulfurous flavor and smell to the foods.
Sunrise City
The Raintree Market is a bazaar that features many foods and drinks.
Many snacks sold in the marketplaces are local specialties, so they’re popular as souvenirs.
Wild and cultivated hibiscus flowers are boiled with sugar to produce a red juice. There is also a white juice, which is made using wild baobab (which is full of nutrients; people call it a beauty elixir you can drink). A legends says that, long ago, members of the royal family would have their foreheads painted with baobab juice when they were born. That’s how the fruit became a local specialty.
In the original tale, the juice for marking foreheads was red. It seems that, over time, the color was changed to white by word of mouth, with the latter description fitting more with the white fruit of the baobab. Because of this change, more and more stalls have been selling a mixture of hibiscus juice and baobab juice.
The baobab fruit is also used to make a particular sour candy. The candy is dyed with res food coloring and is then dusted with sugar and chili powder. It’s described as having a “mature” flavor.
Mangoes are a local specialty! Vendors will happily cut open the fruit for you to enjoy on the spot.
Other notable fruits for sale are tart passionfruit and creamy but smelly jackfruit. The latter is considered the largest fruit in Twisted Wonderland and grows on its tree’s trunks.
The Sunset Villa is a luxurious hotel that hosts VIPs and important guests of the state. They offer a large selection of drinks (fruit juice, black tea, coffee…) and serve whole slabs of steak in front of you before serving at luxurious barbecues. After dinners, they have dance performances.
There is an enormous sausage that’s wrapped up in a coil. If unwound, it’s a meter long. It’s meant to be cut with scissors before eating. The sausage’s herbs make it taste refreshing, and its meat is finely grounded to allow its flavors to come through.
Seafood is fresh and cheap, provided you live by the sea or in a coastal region like Dawn City. In more inland areas, seafood is considered a luxury.
Their seafood tends to be cooked with strong spices.
Ruggie’s yet-to-be-named hometown
Because the residents are poor, their food is usually made from collected scraps (such as pumpkin pie made predominantly from the pulpy parts) or prepared with substitutions and without extra flourishes. For example, Ruggie’s grandma prepares homemade donuts for his birthday but they couldn't afford fancy toppings (until Ruggie started working to bring in extra income).
It’s implied that there were instances when Ruggie (and presumably others from his hometown) had to eat rotten food or out of trash cans to get by.
Queendom of Roses
General
There is reference to some irl UK foods in this region, such as the jacket potato.
The Queendom of Roses is famous for its rose jelly rolls. Roses are the flower the country is best known for, of course, but they also have lavender, rosemary, sweet violet, foxglove, bluebells, and many berries.
People from this country eat flowers (which are specifically grown for eating). Flowers are also used for dried flower bookmarks? potpourri, etc.
The Queendom has a good selection of breads.
Apparently, the Queendom also has a strong “tea culture”.
People in the Queendom of Roses eat a lot of different pastries (pies, tarts, quiches, croissants, etc). Croissant donuts (cronuts) in particular have been pretty trendy lately. They’re donuts made with croissant batter, so they come out super flaky. They are sometimes sold with iced tea as a combo.
Potatoes are a staple food.
Jacket potatoes are common at festivals; they are potatoes baked with the skin (ie “jacket”) still on. The standard topping for them is baked beans, but you can also have tuna mayo corn, bean chili, sour cream, avocado, and other things.
Anyone that grew up in the Queendom of Roses has probably done the “cookie smash” at least once as a kid. (More info on this under the “Clock Town” section!)
The Queendom is known for lavender, berries, and rosemary.
Riddle and Trey's yet-to-be-named hometown
Trey's family owns a bakery (called "Patisserie Clover" according to the TWST manga). It seems to be a small "mom and pops" shop with no particular notoriety. However, the manga implies that it was the Clover bakery where Riddle saw the strawberry tarts and became entranced by them. This is also where Riddle would later try his first strawberry tart.
In Riddle and Trey's hometown, people enjoy apple bobbing during the Halloween season.
Before interview: Riddle was worried whether they can start on time and was relieved when Vil showed up and Vil was pretty smug about it lmao
There is a farm not too far from where Riddle lives; it is famous for its ice-cream buns. There is also a cafe located on the farm! It opened shortly after Riddle entered NRC and is so popular that it’s spoken about in magazines and tourists go there just to sample their sweets.
Clock Town
The people of Clock Town value time and punctuality due to the town's connection to the White Rabbit, who was always in a hurry. Many of the foods sold at stalls are things that are easy to hold and eat while walking, such as sliced sandwiches.
The Clock Town Folk Museum mentions a girl that appears in the story of the White Rabbit. She ate cookies that made her grow large; the museum recreates this experiment by projecting a large image of guests that eat cookies they have set out.
The Clock Town Folk Museum also runs a bugle-playing contest. The participation prize is a carrot cookie.
Clock Town sells a brand of potato chips with the White Rabbit logo on them.
The town also sells cookies iced to look like a pocket watch. The icing is made from a mixture of sugar and egg whites (“royal icing”) which hardens considerably. You’re meant to crush the cookie with a hammer to make it into smaller pieces, making it easier to eat. It’s based on the story of the White Rabbit breaking his pocket watch. Others tried to help him fix it by hitting it with a hammer, but it didn’t help at all, only damaged it more!
A lot of people enjoy growing plants, gardening, and horticulture, including stuff that can be eaten like herbs.
Sausage rolls are served in pairs to resemble bunny ears; the container they come in resembles the White Rabbit. They’re sausages wrapped in a pie crust/puff pastry dough, and come in cheese (with a shortcrust pastry similar to what is used for tarts to help hold its shape) and a spicy sausage (with a puff pastry that makes it flaky) variant for the White Rabbit Festival.
There are large mushrooms that grow in Clock Town; eating one side will turn you large, eating the other side will turn you small. The girl in the story of the White Rabbit has eaten these strange mushrooms before. These mushrooms are said to be enchanted and only work in a particular area; its effects last for ~1 minute after eating.

Things my heart used to know, things it yearns to remember - Astarion x F!Reader
Tumblr media
Astarion sometimes has trouble sleeping now that he no longer can walk in the sun.
The sun is high overhead, the daylight shining at its brightest, playing off the water dancing in the fountain below the window of your rented room. The inn is nice, the owner a sweet older lady who doesn't ask questions about unusual sleeping habits of guests. Turning back from the window, you draw the drapes over it, shutting off the light from the room. "You need to get some sleep, love."
Astarion looks up from where he was seated on the bed reading, a safe distance from errant sunbeams and sighs, reluctant even if he's clearly exhausted. "I know, you don't need to fuss over me all the time," he snaps the book shut to accent his peevish tone. You don't respond, giving his temper a moment to cool. Red eyes look down at the floor after a second, "I'm sorry darling, you know I hate it. And it feels worse today."
Ever since he had to go back to life out of the sun, sleeping has been fraught for him. Some days, like today, he's put it off for several days, and he's weary and irritable. "I know." Crossing the room, you take his hands. "It's alright,” your hands squeeze his, “but I really can’t have you on the road to Waterdeep this exhausted.” Despite the way he's changed, Astarion is Astarion, and you love all of him, even the parts that are still hurt and angry.
“Why couldn’t Gale just teleport us or something? He’s a shit wizard.” You almost retort about him insulting his friends, but then his lips reverently kiss both your hands. "Lay down with me for a little while?"
"Of course." Letting go of his hands, you wait until he's under the covers and then lay down next to him, arm wrapped protectively over him.
This has become something of a ritual between the two of you whenever he’s afraid to sleep. Some days he’s afraid he’ll wake back up in Cazador’s manor, some days it’s fear that you’ll be gone when sunset comes, and on others, it’s the memory of faces, lured to their doom in the night. Only once did you make the mistake of walking away after an argument, and leaving him trapped alone in the day. You’d found him after, curled up under a blanket, terrified you’d never come back, knowing he couldn’t even try to find you until after dark. It had taken almost a week to get him to sleep again. Gently, you kiss the top of his head and run a hand through his silver curls. “Love you Sunlight,” his eyes have finally closed and you can feel him relaxing.
“Love you too, Starry Sky.” Very softly, you start to sing a lullaby, one your favorite Nurse used to sing to you, an ancient tune, passed down for generations. Your noble parents didn’t necessarily make a loving childhood a priority, but you do have more warm memories than him, and this is one of the few ways you can share them. Fingers move from his hair to his back, tenderly stroking it while you sing. The way he responds to the old Elven song, you wonder if someone sang it to him over two hundred years ago, someone who loved him just as much as you do now.
“Promise you’ll be here when I wake up,” he murmurs, half-asleep at last.
“I promise Astarion, I’ll always be here.”

Even scarred one is loved
Tumblr media
synopsis: snippets about your partner or you having scars
pairing: Albedo, Ayato, Diluc, Kaeya, Kaveh, Tighnari, Zhongli x reader (separately)
tw: fluff, hurt/comfort, lighning scars, in Albedo’s part Rhinedottir used to be reader’s mentor, dragon features in Zhongli’s, in some parts scars are on the character, in some on reader
word count: 4k+ words in total
a/n: has been lying in my drafts since that summer event with Diluc and Kaeya's letters...
Tumblr media
Albedo
The Chief Alchemist’s skin is a porcelain perfection. Milky white, smooth, spotless, flawless. The man can easily be mistaken for a marble statue and put on display in a museum - showing the chilling beauty of his visage. That’s what the body of a homunculus is - impeccability, when even the biggest and deepest of wounds disappear with time, no traces left behind.
You, on the other hand, are anything but. Sure, you are pretty, but the canvas of your body carries a hideous scar, a curse you got as a reminder of getting too close to what had to have stayed unknown. You should blame your mentor, really - if not for Rhinedottir’s deeds, you would’ve lived and died as a normal human.
…or would've become a monster, like everyone else. But here you are, in clear consciousness, with memories, so, you guess, the Gold saving you actually kind of pays off everything else she did.
Doesn’t mean you are proud of it. What it means is a lot of explanation to do if someone sees, and you prefer not to be bothered and reminded of the devastating events of the past, so you try to avoid neck and chest revealing clothes like a plague, no matter how many times Lisa pesters you about it.
When Albedo asks to draw you naked, you are, for the first time in centuries, shocked. Sure, you worked out your relationship, discussed and tried some intimacy, but the notion of having your skin exposed for long, of his eyes lingering on it for minutes, or hours even… It makes you nervous. Under the clothes you wear - a big, tree-like scar reaches its branches to your neck, spreading its trunk all over your chest. Your mentor, a true scientist to her guts, found you in a grave state and decided that it was better to curse the heart, before anything could happen to the brain.
The man’s fingers are gentle, when he pops the buttons of your shirt open and carefully slides the fabric down your shoulders. The dark night on your skin reflects in his cerulean eyes and something sparks in their depths. You should not, but you feel embarrassed and silently bite your lip, when he leans forward to press his cold lips to your collarbone.
“You are so beautiful…” he whispers and your heart - the one you believed was hardened forever before you met your lover - leaps in your chest. “Allow me to show what I see, [...]”
A word of endearment caresses your ear in the sounds of your native language, and at that moment you understand - Rhinedottir succeeded indeed. She did create a humanoid form of life, but it became capable of feeling and understanding feelings like a real human would. It can’t be any other way, not when he is looking at you like this, not when he is leading you to a sofa and makes you feel comfortable, not when his touch against your cheek is reassuring and attempts to chase your worries away, not when he picks a sketchbook, where you know the only pictures existing are of you.
Not when he draws the reminder of your doom like it's indeed the fraction of a starry sky painting your skin.
Ayato
Ever since you saw a long ugly scar across his back, it has been making you restless. The discovery happened when your lover invited you to attend the hot springs with him. It was a new step in your relationship, on the very border of entering its intimate part, and you were excited to accept his offer and remained elated for days before and on the day of. That is until his back was bared to you at some point and you saw it.
Ayato didn’t say anything about it, relaxing in the hot water and busying both of you with a conversation and savoring the finest tea and some sweets (which kept you slightly guarded, until the head of the Kamisato clan didn’t tell you these weren’t cooked by him). With all of that, you had no opportunity to ask him, not that you felt like you could - you are close and in a relationship, but who knows how willing he is to talk about it?
It’s been a week since then, and the sight of the scar occasionally appeared before your eyes. You must’ve gotten quieter and brooding, because Ayaka comments on it, when you pay her company in Inazuma City to do some shopping.
“Y/n, is something worrying you?” You look up from examining embroidered silk and tilt your head in question.
“Why would you think so?”
“Well… I noticed how your thoughts seem to stray away and I wondered if everything is okay. Maybe I can help?”
You hum. Ayaka is his sister and you grew to be good friends. It wouldn’t hurt asking her, right? Surely she must know something about that. And if she doesn’t? What if she knows nothing about the scar, about her brother having been hurt in the past? Ayato cares for her and would like to not expose her to things like that, even if she is a grown up woman and a skillful sword user. You need to be careful.
“Say, Ayaka…” you start, cautiously choosing your words. “Does your brother have a…tattoo on his back?”
“A tattoo?” She looks at you confused. “No he doesn’t, our clan doesn’t have a tradition like that. And I don’t think it’ll fit with the scar.”
Oh, so she does know.
“The scar?”
“Yes, the scar. You know the Kamisato clan had many enemies, and still does, but in the past it was so much worse. There were multiple attempts to,” she pauses, as if searching for the right words, “remove him from the picture… One of them nearly succeeded.”
“Is that so…” Ayaka nods and, hiding her saddened gaze, returns to looking at the fabric, thereby drawing the brief explanation to an end. Suddenly a strong urge to return the Estate fills your heart. To talk. To listen. To offer comfort and caresses if he desires so.
But as Ayaka drags you to the next store on your list, you think that you'll wait. Until he decides he wants to tell you the whole story, until he knows that he can trust you with his life.
Diluc
The room is silent. It is the dead of the night, and even so at least three people are not sleeping at this ungodly hour. You give Adelinde a grateful set of eyes, when she returns to you and your husband's bedroom with a bowl of clean water and several towels, placing all of that on the table near the armchair you've been standing close to.
"Are you sure you don't need my assistance?" She asks you quietly, glancing between you and the half-undressed man slumped on the piece of furniture. This woman is a real treasure, you think. It is true that this is her job, but she's always been doing far more than her responsibilities require. And that’s exactly why you are not going to deprive her from her sleep any longer.
"No, Adelinde, it's fine, I got this. Please, return to your room and have some sleep."
The head maid gives you a nod and then a small bow.
"As you wish. But if you need me, please, don't hesitate to wake me up."
"I hope it won't come to this. Good night and thank you again."
"May this night be kind to you."
And so she is out. With a sigh you glance at the man who remained quiet during the whole ordeal. Diluc knows he is in big trouble. He promised you to be careful, heck, he promised you to cut off his nightly outings, and here he is, exhausted and arm bleeding. He expects you to scold him or to whisper-yell at him, anything that would indicate you are angry with him, but you do none of these things. Instead you grab one of the towels, wet it and start wiping the blood off.
As you do so, you can't help but let your eyes wander all over the skin of his bared upper body.
Scars.
So many many scars. Big, small, wide and thin, old and fresh… Each told a story and you knew a handful. Yet this time you asked for none, busying yourself with cleaning his wound to treat and bandage it.
"Diluc," his name finally leaves your lips and fiery eyes snap open - he nearly drowsed off.
"Yes?" A croaked sound he is almost embarrassed of.
"Thank you for returning alive."
You do not care that this raid has probably given him a new future scar - all you care is that he came back, that he made it out despite everything.
"But I'd really like you to stop pushing yourself this much. I am grateful you've already lessened your workload and dedicated more of your free time to me, though I want you to become dedicated to yourself too. You do tend to forget about it."
The redhead's heart clenches. He knows he cannot promise you to stop completely, but he can try and get less injured whenever he is out fighting.
After all, there are too many scars already to add new ones to the collection.
Kaeya
Fluttering of crystal fly wings. These little beautiful creatures can be found whenever in Teyvat but the first time the Alberich boy encountered them was in the vineyard of the Dawn Winery. Gleaming in both sun and moon light they felt like little sparks, slowly floating in the air, looking too tempting not to chase after them. And he used to chase after those a lot, smiling and laughing and looking at the bright world like any happy child would.
Your butterfly kisses remind him of crystal flies, caressing his face with a subtle tremble of their wings as they try to fly away. The memories of the past overtake him, making the man feel warm and cozy, as if it's not a candle lit on the bedside drawer of your bedroom, but a tender sun, licking his cheek with its affectionate rays.
Until summer heat is replaced by the blazing fire in his memory and the surging pain in his right eye. The eye you've been delicately touching with your soft lips for the past several minutes. The eyepatch is lying on the sheets near his right hip, right where you put it, after taking it off with your deft fingers. Fingers that delicately cradle his face in their loving hold, not letting him shy away from you, letting you kiss an old scar.
No words are exchanged as you sit in his lap with his palms resting on your sides, digits creasing the material of your nightwear. Kaeya is nervous. You've come to him without any explanation, and before he could climb into your shared bed and hold a blanket up for you to join him, asked to shed the shirt he's always worn to sleep. The man knew what you wanted to see - not the many scars littering his body (they weren't all that surprising to you), but the traces of burns on his back, the ones he hid from you for the longest time, not ready to tell the story, afraid to face the past. He didn't blame the one who gave him those, he could never truly, however the day he got them scarred him much deeper than skin.
Yet he did as you asked, slowly, with stiff fingers, but eventually the fabric was no longer covering his body.
You didn't ask him any questions, you didn't even say a word, as you took his hand and softly spinned him around to face his back. Your kisses could do nothing to the damaged skin, they were long healed naturally, but his inner turmoil of emotions was soothed by your display of affection.
More relaxed and less anxious he didn't protest when you made him sit on the edge of the bed and climbed into his lap. Maybe he did tense a little when you reached behind to untie the string attached to his eyepatch, maybe his fingers grabbed at your clothes a little bit too roughly, but he didn't stop you, until the little piece was off and away from his face and your lips replaced it.
He knows he doesn't deserve you, but Celestia be damned - he doesn't want to ever let you go. The only one he entrusted his heart like this, allowed you to unwrap the carefully built facade and reach to what is real about the man Kaeya Alberich is. And knowing you love him with all these ugly scars littering his skin? Makes him believe you'll still love him after seeing how scarred his heart is.
Kaveh
“Say, would you like to go shopping for our next date?”
The question takes you by surprise as you exit the bathroom of your bedroom you’ve been sharing with the blond architect ever since your relationship got more serious and you offered him to move in with you. The gorgeous man is standing in front of your full-length mirror, his back to you, undoing the numerous clips that keep his hair out of his face daily. The crimson of his eyes flashes, as he meets your stunned gaze in the reflection.
“Why so sudden?” You ask - nervously, he notes, fidgeting with the material of your night clothes.
“I noticed how you always wear overly closed clothes. I thought we could look for something more revealing?”
The way you shudder doesn’t go unnoticed by him, confusion now etched in his facial expression.
“What’s wrong, my flower?” You sigh, lips drawn in a line. He uses such a delicate word to address, but you are anything but.
“Does it bother you? The way I dress, I mean.”
“Hm? No, of course not,” Kaveh shakes his head, turning to face you. “You look pretty in whatever you wear. But you must be uncomfortable, walking around wearing so many layers when it’s scorching outside. Just the other day you were so dazed, I was afraid you’d pass out before we reached home.”
Even now he can’t help but question the rather covering night clothes, especially compared to his bared upper body. He was sure to discuss it before you started sharing the bed, and you never showed discomfort about it, but somehow always avoided the topic of your own choice of night wear.
As he is pondering over the topic in his head again, you chew on your bottom lip. It was foolish of you to think he’d never notice your strange behavior in regard to how you dress, or rather started dressing after getting together with him.
But it’d be unfair to keep your lover in the dark, after he was so open to you, right?
“Hey, lovebird?” Kaveh snaps out of his thoughts, when you call him, settling on the edge of the mattress and patting the place by your side. The blonde immediately joins you, eagerly accepting your hands sliding into his, giving them a reassuring squeeze.
“Does anything bother you?” He beats you to it, making you sigh again, feeling how your heart is wildly thumping against your ribcage.
“Promise you won’t feel differently about me?”
“Never,” the firmness and the speed with which he confirms your statement brings some comfort to your worrying self, giving you strength to proceed.
“You know I used to work closely with matras, yeah?” He nods. “This job isn’t particularly harmless, so I, um,” gulping you search for any indication of - you don’t even know what - in his eyes. Whatever it might be, there is none, only softness hidden behind the ruby gems, pouring in gentle waves, caressing your being, making your heart flutter, and words abruptly leave your mouth.
“I have scars.”
“And?” Your eyes widen, when he cocks his head to the side, looking at you with a clear lack of understanding.
“‘And?’!? Kaveh, come on!” You groan, looking to the side. “I mean look at you! You are absolutely gorgeous, and I know how much you appreciate fine things, which I am not…”
“Is this the reason why you’ve been dressing like this and changing in the bathroom all this time?”
“...yeah…”
“Oh, darling,” a warm smile brightens up his face and he leans forward, kissing your cheek. “First of all, you are not a ‘thing’. Secondly, I am such a fool for not noticing sooner. I assure you, you are already so amazing and I can’t imagine some scars scaring me off. Truth be told, I fell in love that moment I saw you handling that lying bastard to the ground.”
“You mean that day you looked at me with literal hearts in your eyes, scrolls tightly held to your chest and mouth open?” He immediately grows bashful, but the smile gets bigger - you are teasing him, that’s a good sign.
“Yeah, yeah, that. What I am trying to say is that in my eyes you are already wonderful. We can take it slow, but would you trust me and show them one day?”
The way you lean into him burying your face in his neck tells him everything, and yet the blonde is delighted to hear your quiet answer.
“Of course.”
Tighnari
Tighnari curls his tail around your hip tighter when another clap of thunder disturbs the night. His ear twitches, sensitive to the sound which easily shakes him out of sleep, eyes immediately trained on the window to make sure it’s closed.
When a flash of light rips through the dark clouds that overtook the sky, the man’s pupils narrow in slits out of pure instincts, and he makes a sound of discontent, drawing your body closer to his. Which, as he quickly realizes, wasn't the brightest idea, as you start squirming and groaning. Tighnari curses under his breath, when you yawn and attempt to stretch in his hold, eyelids slowly sliding up, revealing your precious orbs he loves so much, to the curl of his toes.
You owlishly blink, directing your gaze to your lover’s face, then blinking again, trying to get rid of the veil of sleep and make out his features in the dark.
“‘nari…” you rasp, reaching to his cheek, tenderly touching it with just the fingertips. “Why are you still awake, dear?”
The fennec man opens his mouth to give you some excuse, to lure you back to the dreamland, but another burst of electric light and the loud rumble accompanying it cuts him off, forcing his body to stiffen. You crane your neck to look behind you. The understanding quickly dawns on you and, humming, your body moves.
Tighnari’s eyes slightly widen in panic when you sit up, leaving the lock of his arms, letting only his tail rest on your thighs. But even it soon ends up on the mattress when you stand up and wobble to the window. A soft rattle of closing curtains for a moment blocks another clap of thunder, and you returning to his side not a few seconds later soothes his nerves.
“Still hits badly?” You ask softly, reaching for his hand and sliding your fingers between his. He can only nod, dropping his forehead to your shoulder and squeezing his digits around yours.
“I know it’s hard,” you press a sweet kiss to the top of his head, right between his droopy ears, “but I also know you’ll overcome it. And I will be with you all the way.”
“How did you manage?” He finally speaks for the first time through the night and he sounds so tired.
“You mean this?” Even in the darkness he sees how you tug on the hem of your shirt, revealing multiple scars, akin to the tree limbs, tracing the path the electricity took as it traveled through you. That electro-wielding scam really got you in the past, Tighnari knows it took a lot of time for you to recover - both physically and mentally. He was there to see it, as you were sent to the Gandharva Ville for rehabilitation, way before you two started dating.
He nods again, curling his tail around your figure once more.
“Well,” you glance at his shoulder, where under his own shirt, the similar scar is hidden, one that has an even ghastlier story behind it, “truth be spoken? Under your care and with your guidance. You were the one to drag me out of depression and fear, and I am ready to do the same to you.”
The man hugs you tighter, tucking your head under his chin and sighing shakily. He knows eventually the scar will just be a scar, something to match with you and have a story to tell to the stupid rangers and passersby of Avidya Forest for the sake of caution… It’s your willingness that counts though, filling his heart with warmth and making him forget of things surrounding him.
Tonight, despite the foul weather outside, he will be able to sleep. With you by his side.
Zhongli
The life among mortals was peaceful and fulfilling, and the retired Archon enjoys to fullest everything it has to offer. But sometimes he can’t help himself, leaving the house in the city he shares with you, his spouse of many centuries, if not thousands of years. He takes a long stroll to the land of the adepti, where he is always welcome to stay and reside, unbothered if he desires so.
In the mountains, on peaks hidden behind the clouds, the stoic man can allow his control over this mortal form slip, revealing horns, adorned with gold, long tail of earthly color and long fluffy trail of autumn-colored fur on the tip of it, eyes, more reptilian than human like, shining like finest cor lapis, and scales covering some of his skin.
Often you find him on one of the mountain tops, basking in the sunlight and squinting like a content cat would do. Your lover prefers to shed some of his clothes, baring his skin and scales to warm rays, making them shine beautifully - both because it makes him happy and because he knows you can join him, thus the dragon does want to show off to you.
This time you sense him on Mt. Hulao and upon arriving there spot the half-dragon Prime adeptus resting near the lake, having abandoned his long robe (he does change his attire whenever he is out of the city) and resting on his side. Quietly walking closer you see how the tip of his tail lazily grazes the surface of a cool lake nearby and smile. The next moment the water splashes just barely miss you as you jump to the side when the very same tail whips into your direction.
“My love, I see you are playful today,” your husband grins contently, not opening his eyes but retrieving his tail so you could finally come closer and sit with him.
“I am sorry, the gem of my heart. Simply couldn’t help myself,” your presence is welcomed and the gentle touch of your hand against the side of his neck sends pleasant shivers down his spine.
A comfortable silence falls between you two. Zhongli relishes in your loving caresses, while you make sure to glide the tips of your fingers everywhere you spot the scales of who he really is.
In his human body, Zhongli’s skin is flawless. It doesn’t bear any reminder of hardships and war times, when he fought, injured and got his own wounds, but his other self does. You remember the last time you saw him in his full beast glory - while beautiful and shiny, his scaled body was scarred. Like this, in his adeptus form you could witness some of the scars as well, each reminded you of this or that ghastly cut delivered by his enemies and with time healing into nothing but long lines of imperfection. Yet you do not hate them, nor does your husband. They simply tell the stories of the past, and make you both remember that despite any obstacle or danger he faced, he always made it out in the end.

With a huff, you pulled the sheets off your heated body and the chilly air quickly hugged you. You climbed out of bed and walked out of your chambers.
Night has came very quickly, but you could not find sleep so easily. On the morrow, you will be leaving for Dragonstone with your sister, Rhaenyra. Many thoughts had roamed your mind enough to keep you from your slumber.
Without knocking, not wanting to wake your sister up, you slipped into your young sister, Helaena’s chambers. Although it was dark in the room, you could still see the blown out candles and your only light was the starry sky. You could feel her eyes on you as you slipped inside her bed, reaching for Helaena’s arms that had quickly reached out, to your surprise.
Helaena pulled you closer to her, her warmth made you feel calm and soothed. “Is it true?” she asked, in a whisper. “You are leaving?”
“Yes, sweet sister.” you answered.
She nodded, with her head comfortably resting on your chest. Out of everyone in the family, Helaena will miss you the most. To her, you are the only one who understands and never treated her differently.
“I heard from the handmaidens,” she whispered as you leaned in to hear more clearly, “sister has proposed that I could be betrothed to Jacaerys.”
From the memory being remembered in your mind, you softly chuckled. Even though, you both were in the dark, you knew Helaena’s cheeks were flushed with redness.
“And what is wrong with that?” you teased, “He’s a sweet boy! He will take care of you and honor you.”
Helaena smiled at the thought—you were right, out of the possible suitors, Jacaerys was the best of them. But she knew his heart wouldn’t belong to her, it was clear that it would always belong to another.
“I do not wish for you to leave.” Helaena suddenly confessed, biting her lip, tears falling from her eyes.
You could feel the tears falling onto your skin, “I shall visit,” you promised, with a gentle tone in your voice, “once I return, we will sit by the gardens and eat cake with berries, Meraxes and Dreamfyre by our side”
Helaena started imagining the thought while she squeezed your hand softly as she tried drifting off to sleep, “Widowed and petrified, a powerful darkness roams in the emerald sky.”
Listening to her prophecy once again, you sharply breathed in. Helaena had only whispered this prophecy to you ever since you both were children. Till this day, you had not know what it meant but it had frightened you immensely.
At last, you were able to sleep, in the arms of your sister. But you were not prepared for the massive headache you would receive the next day.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“You must rethink this decision!” Alicent urged while you and Lysanna were folding all of your gowns and coats to place them in the luggages. Your things were almost ready to be put in the carriage with the other luggages that belonged to Rhaenyra and her family.
“I refuse to have you leave King’s Landing before your nameday!” you shook your head at her attempts and silently dismissed Lysanna to come back later. You turned to see Alicent with tears in her eyes, you only mentally scoffed in return.
“The King allowed it. He wishes for me to be where I would truly be happy and that is living on Dragonstone with my sister.” you reminded the queen and she only took your hands into hers as a way to plead but it was not working.
“My dearest, you would truly be happy here! In the Red Keep,” she argued and squeezed your hands, “being by the sides of your young siblings and by me. I cannot bear seeing you go, I have always saw you as one of my own.”
“This is not goodbye. We will exchange messages by raven.” you reassured, but Alicent only sobbed louder. She knew messages were nothing if you were not here by her side physically. Sure, you will miss studies with your step-mother and watching your father work on his architect. You will miss playing with your young brothers out in the courtyard. And of course, you will miss your young sister and her whispering prophets that she always tells you.
“Let us appreciate today, step-mother. I swear to you, I will visit on dragonback.”
Alicent let out a nervous sigh from her mouth. Her lips pursued as she looked down at your interlocked hands.
”I…” she stammered, and tentatively let go of your hands before stroking your long silver locks gently, “…will see to it that your luggages are properly prepared..when you arrive on Dragonstone, I want you to message the King and I to know you have arrived safely. Please remember to visit, my dearest.”
She chewed on the inner side of her cheek as she attentively watched your expression brightened at her words. As you gave her a warm hug, she could only return it back tightly. As you both let go, Alicent only had the strength to give you a sad smile before excusing herself to leave your chambers.
Before finally packing your last gown, you called for your knight to come and grab your luggages to bring them outside. While they attended to your things, you looked around the room, noticing how empty it looks without your gowns, your jewelry, your precious collections of art pieces. You snapped out of your thoughts once Lysanna came in your chambers with your nephews—they looked rather happy to know you were coming as well.
“Thank the gods, you will be living with us!” Luke beamed, you laughed at the young boy who prompted himself to sit on your old bed. “Jace was begging mother to let you come with us before she had told us you and Liz were already coming as well.”
“Shut up Luke!”
“It is alright, my Prince,” you smiled at Jace as he only turned red from your words, “your thoughtfulness moves me deeply.”
Lysanna cleared her throat before getting up from her seat and turned towards you, “Perhaps we should begin heading to the carriage? Princess Rhaenyra has already left.”
Once her words settled in, quickly you helped Luke get back on his feet and ushered him and Jace to follow Lysanna to the carriage. As for you, you decided to ride on Meraxes and meet your family at Dragonstone.
But before you decided to leave, you roamed around the castle to look for your father. You were not the type to leave your father stranded without a farewell. As you reached your father’s chambers, his knight bowed to you and held the door open.
Your father was sitting by the windows as usual, you witness him kiss the ring that once belonged to your mother. The sight had only made you feel some kind of guilt for leaving—you did not want to leave your father’s side, especially when his condition has worsen but it was time for you to leave King’s Landing.
Your father had finally looked up and his tears were replaced with a smile, “My sweet girl, what good brings you here?”
“How could I leave without seeing my father once more?” you approached your father and the gloomy atmosphere quickly disappeared once you hugged him, of course, he returned the hug happily. The act suddenly made you remember a sweet memory between you and your father when you were younger.
A sweet memory of when you ran towards your father to give him a huge hug after riding with Meraxes for the first time. He was there to see all of it.
The old King relished in the moment, it pained him to see you leave, the youngest daughter of him and Aemma, his one true love. But he knew Rhaenyra would take great care of you, she had always shown a great amount of love and care for her younger sister. And perhaps, you will come back with a family of your own, the thought only made your father feel contented. He hopes to live until then to see it.
The hug had only lasted a few seconds but you wish it lasted more. Your tears were noticed by your father and he wiped them off with his remaining hand. “You grown to look just like your mother, y/n.” your father whispered, you let go of him and stand before him. Your sad smile reassured your father.
While you prepared to leave—about to wish him farewells, he looked down at his hand, fiddling with the rings that belonged to him and Aemma with his thumb before deciding to take them off and reached over to your hand to place them gently on your opened palm. You looked back to your father with a worried look.
“Oh father! I couldn’t-“
“I want you to have them..” your father demanded, “you must have them..for me..”
Without wanting to argue back and forth with your father, you looked down at the rings with curiosity before picking up the one that belonged to your mother and examined it. It was pure gold and very beautiful. Within seconds, you slowly placed both rings on your index and ring finger. From this day forward, you will wear them with pride and with the intention of honoring your parents.
Once Viserys watched as you put them on, he saw Aemma for a split second—his heart swelled and was glad that you could be the one to hold on to the jewelry now. He never planned on donating them or simply have them be thrown away after his death. “You must be on your way now, my sweet girl.”
The farewell had almost made you forgotten about traveling, Meraxes had been waiting for you for quite some time now and you did not wish to upset the Silver Queen. With swiftness, you placed a kiss on your father’s cheek and waved him goodbye as you left his room.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It took over a day but you and your family had arrived to Dragonstone, you let Lysanna attend to your things and unpack everything for you, told her to find the biggest chambers and place your things in there. Meraxes settled on the east side of the huge island to rest, she was very big for the dragon pit. You took the time to explore the island while the rest of your family settled inside the spine-chilling castle.
Dragonstone is cold.
But it was rather better than Kings Landing. Sure you missed the weirwood tree and the gardens. You missed your siblings, father, and step-mother. But you were met with true happiness around the presence of your older sister and her family.
Thoughts clouding your mind, you released a sigh as you roamed your hands on the sand.
It was relaxing in Dragonstone. The atmosphere made you feel at peace—even if it was actually dreary and lonely but that’s what made it better. The sounds of waves crashing towards the shore, the massive caves underneath Dragonstone, and the overwhelming winds made you gleam in happiness. You couldn’t wait to explore the entire island.
Although yes—there’s not a lot to do in Dragonstone. You see yourself spending most of your days in the massive and grand library, reading histories about your House and Old Valyria. But you had the company of Lysanna and your nephews to help you not feel lonely. Surely, Meraxes will always be in your company too, she will be with you as you roam the shores.
“How long have you stayed here?”
You looked up from your spot on the sand, quickly clasped your hands together to get rid of the sand that stayed sticking on to your palms. Your neutral look on your face replaced with a small smile.
You made room right by your side and patted the space, “Come sit, nephew. The sun is about to set.” Jace quickly sat down and moved even closer by your side.
“Mother was looking for you. She had asked me to fetch you back inside,” Jace mentioned and you turn your head to look at the shorter boy, “but I would like to spend some time with you before we head back.”
You giggled at the statement and slightly placed your head down on his shoulder, Jace only leaned into your touch. “That does not make sense, my prince, you always spend time with me. With any opportunity, you’re always by my side,” Jace felt warm and fuzzy from your words. It was the truth, since birth, he had always preferred to be with you.
“My sweet protector.”
“Princess..” Jace muttered, a hint of sadness in his voice, you looked at him with curiosity. “Has it been decided? Your betrothal?
His question made you slightly hiss from irritation. Alicent had not said anything but you never accepted the betrothal. You’re sure that since moving to Dragonstone, you do not need to marry Aegon.
But..now who will wed Aegon?
You shook your head and gave him a relieved sigh, “No,” you answered truthfully, “…but I am glad it has been postponed. I rather wait a few more years until I am to be betrothed.”
Jace finally breathed out—he was holding his breath while waiting for your answer, he smiled while he watched the sunset.
“I do not wish to see you be betrothed..at all” he whispered, softly.
“I know…I’m sorry.” you mumbled, hugging your knees tight to your chest and leaning your head to rest on your knees instead as you turned to keep staring at Jace. You could not help but caress his hair to bring some sort of comfort.
“I do not want to see you abandon me, Princess..” the young boy admitted, staring back into your tired lilac eyes. He watched your long curls of hair dance with the wind. After roaming your hand in his hair, you gently grasped his hand and smiled.
“The last thing I want is to abandon you, nephew. I swear it on my life, I will never leave your side.” You swore and tightened your hold on his smaller hand. “I shall stay by your side till my last breath.”
Jace nodded and pulled you into a strong embrace.
“There is something I have always wanted to confess,” he said, nervously while he planted a quick kiss on your cheek. “but I will tell you when I am of age, so please wait until then.”
You giggled at his sudden awkwardness, “I will try my best to wait, my kind Prince.”
“That is not reassuring!” he shouted and you continued to giggle as he started to pout. “You have to promise me, Princess!” he insisted, with his arms slightly shaking you.
After you stopped your laughter, you took a deep breath and nodded. You wanted him to tell you what is his confession but you had a feeling you already knew what he wanted to say, you were with denial—you didn’t want it to be true. But of course it had to be, you know it, the whole Red Keep knows it. You known since the day he had wished to be married to you. You weren’t ready for that day to come just yet, surely, you have felt some sort of feelings for Jace as well but you also knew it would never be a happy marriage, knowing Targaryens marriages had always ended terribly, so you shall wait until he is older and mature, hopefully, he will forget about his confession and carry on with his life.
“I promise I will wait for you, Jacaerys.”
From the tone of your voice, Jace was finally reassured. The sun also had finished setting, it was a crescent moon tonight. You got up from the sand and helped your nephew get up as well while he grabbed your coat for you and handed it back. You both started walking back to the castle—knights at the front, letting you both in quickly and you let your nephew lead you to the left wing of the castle to where you will be staying.
“Your chambers is close to mine. That way, I could always visit you without having to travel throughout the castle,” Jace informed, he looked excited as he told you. Out of all the chambers in the castle, he chose one that was closest to yours. “Come! Let us have supper!”
He took your hand once again and lead you to the dining room, your family and Lysanna were seated in the long table, quietly chatting and eating from their plates. The room looked eerie—same as all the other rooms in the castle. The chairs were dark wooden, sculpted with dragons, as for the table. The fireplace was placed by the large windows, it was the main source of light for the massive room.
Rhaenyra looked up while she was attending the babe that was placed on her lap, Joffrey. She smiled and motioned for the handmaidens to help you both be seated. You sat by Lysanna, who was happily playing with your other nephew, Luke.
“How was your adventure, exploring the land?” Rhaenyra inquired, placing her eyes on you while you took a sip from your cup. The wine tasted much more rich than the wine in King’s Landing.
“It was lovely,” you praised, “I love the shores, I watched the sunset with Jace.” As you spoke, Jace quickly turned at the mention of his name.
“It took me awhile to find her!”
Ser Laenor cleared his throat as he looked towards you and his son, while he was very much into his meal. “Dragonstone is a very big island.” he acknowledged, you nodded in agreement.
You and Rhaenyra continued to chat about many topics, you had let her known that you decided to help Lysanna speak High Valyrian. You all were happily conversing with one another and it made you feel much better, realizing this was the first family dinner you had in weeks.
The peace was interrupted when a handmaiden entered the room with immense speed, rushing to the Princess Rhaenyra. The handmaiden whispered into the princess’ ear and immediately your sister’s face dropped, and her body became tense. You turned to look and her grip on Joffrey slightly tightened.
Your sister seemed frozen, so you spoke, “Sister, what is it?” you asked, nervously. With no response, You turned to whisper to Lysanna, asking if she could put the boys to bed now. Lysanna, unknowing of the situation, nodded and helped Luke from his seat and pat Jace to follow her. As she was getting ready to leave, you gently took the babe from Rhaenyra and handed him to Lysanna before they all had left the dining room quietly.
With impatience, Ser Laenor took Rhaenyra’s hand, “Rhaenyra, what has happened?” Clearly concern was painted all over his face. The once delighted atmosphere in the room became dreary and dull
“The Lady Laena Velaryon,” Rhaenyra breathed, not wanting to make eye contact with you or Ser Laenor “has passed.”

i.yuji x reader | konbini in the night
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are breadcrumbs on your face. you wipe them off and throw the packaging away in the dustbin next to his bike, the darkness of the night contrasting the bright lights of the convenience store next to you.
“look!” he calls out, the light in his pink hair fading as he exits the store, “I got one of these strawberry sandwiches I keep seeing online lately.”
the glint in his eyes is like powdered sugar on a perfect cake, or fireworks in a starry sky. sweet, bright, unforgettable— a treasure in people’s memories. the convenience store had been like an oasis in the dim, merely lamp-lit streets, and the two of you decided to dash straight into it before getting back to jujutsu high’s dormitories.
“you sure you don’t want anything else?” he asks, “the cashier lady’s actually really nice. I can give you some of these sandwiches, too.”
you’re sure it’s because he’s nicer. that he walked up to the counter, with that adorable face and kind smile, and the lady just treated him the same. like how sunflowers shined at and turned their heads to the sun.
“no, I’m fine.”
“hm…” he goes, “okay. but you should eat more, you know?”
“pft— yuuji, I’ll be just fine. don’t worry, okay?”
“okay,” he says with a pout.
he gets on the bicycle, and reflexively, you sit behind him. (you really have been pavlov’ed into getting on the passenger’s seat every time he’s on his bike, huh?) he places the sandwiches next to where you’ve placed your own water bottle in the basket, and you lean forward so that your face rests against his back while your arms are wrapped loosely around his neck. the hard pillion seat feels as comfortable as a mattress on display in a department store.
the ride back to the dorms— back home, actually— starts mostly mundanely, the wind humming softly against your face, the night dissolving your consciousness in slumber. you feel just that one bit out of control of yourself, and your head feels light to the point where you don’t want to think about anything at all.
“...let’s get married, yuuji,” you whisper under the twinkling stars, your spirit warmly embracing his while you press your chest more against his back. normally you’d be too scared to, especially with your breath still smelling like sandwiches: all too ridden with your own inhibitions— but this night in particular is almost a perfect one, so for once you don’t mind.
there is so much pain in the world but not here. not behind him and definitely not on the seat behind his back. the world ahead is uncertain but you’d be willing to face it with him head-on as long as he’s fine with it.
“huh? married?” he doesn’t know if the red on his cheeks is obvious but he thinks that even if it is you wouldn’t see it under the night sky. you can tell that under his large brown eyes there’s the faintest of blushes— you don’t need eyes to see that.
you nuzzle your face into the crook of his neck. he smells like some kind of 3-in-1 shampoo-conditioner-shower gel thing, but you guess that’s a testament to how much you love him since you don’t mind it at all. it’s wonderfully endearing to you now: the plain, minty scent that clings to his trademark ref hoodie, how the ends of his spiky pink hair poke and tickle at your face, how you can hear his low, slow breathing like a soft melody soothing you to sleep.
you’re not going to think that you’ll lose him someday. if you did then you wouldn’t be able to live. but if you didn’t promise this now— now when you’ve still only met him three months ago— and lost him, you’d spend your whole life grieving over him.
“mhm,” you reply, “let’s get married. I want to stay with you for a lifetime.”
and if this isn’t love you don’t know what love is anymore.
he looks back for a moment, and smiles, showing his teeth off like a little kid.
“sure! I wanna have that too.” he turns back. “I mean, I wanna make you happy. really happy. every day. and you wouldn’t have to worry about keeping me happy because I’d be the happiest guy in the world as long as you were. and, and—” —he lets one of his hands go from the bicycle handles; you open your eyes as he starts making gestures with it as accompaniments to his words— “— we’ll have this nice house or something, and it can be whatever you like. we can think of something together. and we won’t have much but it’ll be enough, I think.”
“mhm,” you smile. you bet he can feel the imprints of your lips on his skin, because it lays the slightest of gooseflesh on the back of his neck, the hairs there rising a little. as gross as it sounds you don’t worry if it’s chapped, and you guess he doesn’t mind either. “we’ll have just enough for us.”
he hums in agreement. “yeah.”
it’s quiet for a while, just the night air mixed with his scent, the grass swaying along to a silent tune, him, and you.
“…you know, a lot of people think that things like this come in sequences or something. like you have to at least kiss and do more than studying or going to the store together. we don’t even go to each others’ rooms at night or spend every second together and all… but— I think… I think I already know I want to spend my whole life with you. I mean, I really, really love you. so I get kinda worked up about lots of stuff sometimes but then I’ll see you again and that tells me things’ll be fine. that we’ll work things out.”
“yeah,” you say, your breath brushing against his skin again. it warms your cheeks up as the heat in it spreads around your face like hot tea. “we will. we definitely will. I promise.”
you fall asleep on his shoulder and don’t care about waking up on time the next day.

Gold Rush
Tumblr media
hello everyone! I thought that as a last hurrah to the summertime, I'd write something inspired by it. this was kindly suggested by @mybrokenveins3000, and i am so obsessed with the whole concept. i hope you all enjoy, let me know what you think! love u!
word count: 1,429
Your skin begs to soak up every last ray of late-August sunshine. The flashing lights and movie stars feel far away now, a life that belongs to someone else, someone who cares about things that, in this life, have no value. He’s golden, flickering, light pouring from him as you sit beside him in the convertible. The wind tickles at your skin, your eyes glued to him sat beside you. Linen shirt, sunglasses, hair sea-salt-ruffled. His skin has been kissed by the sun since you arrived here all but two weeks ago. You tip your head back, try to commit every last cobblestone and blade of grass to memory. The Italian summer has owned your heart for a while, but the silver R laid flat to your chest is forever, sacred, for eternity.
His fingertips are hot on your sticky skin, the breeze welcome as he carefully turns the wheel. Physically, his eyes are fixed forward, but they’re glassy, dreamy, starry. He looks like something you’d have drawn when you were 15, a figment of your imagination. You wonder how many other people would’ve drawn the same thing - what must it be like to grow up that beautiful? The jealousy that dares to make itself know disappears in an instant, his chocolate gaze melting into yours.
“Are you happy?" He asks you. You nod, wordlessly, because words could never be enough.
"Are you?"
"Very." His gaze returns to the road, swallowing heavily, the sweetest of smiles on his face.
The car takes a left, rumbling up the hill that leads us to our treasure trove, our castle. White stone walls, shutter blinds, a peach tree curving over the balcony. It's silent as the engine shuts off, except for the distant sound of a bird call. Your skirt is soft on your legs as you jog up the stone steps, Ross following closely behind, as ever. His hands on your waist, lips on the shell of your ear, light breaths sending you dizzy,
"Ross," you mumble through giggles, unable to put the keys in the lock for his touches. His presence in a room could do that to you, though, red often flushing to your face at the sight of him.
"What, can I not kiss my fiance?" He smiles against your cheek, emphasis on the latter.
Your engagement remains a secret from the world, from prying eyes, from anyone, really. He'd popped the question three days ago, the silver band on your finger new and novel, the sight of it startling, almost.
You turn around in his hold, back pressed to the wood of the door, head tilted upwards to meet his affirmed smirk, a smugness to it as he gazes down at you.
"Fiance." You breathe out, chest sinking as you sigh. He nods, inching closer and closer to your pink lips until they're pressed together. Your hands hold his face, stubble gravelly under your hot touch, your breath stolen by his kiss. He nods at you with drowsy eyes as he pulls away, smiling. The air is balmy, the dusky sky almost a shade of rust now.
He slips the key out of your fingertips, unlocking the door as you rest against it. Walking you backwards into the house, his hands are on your hips and he's laughing at something you've said, something cocky, the kind of thing that fascinated him in the bar that one night. A loud laugh, the kind that gets stuck in the air, tangled around your ear, lingering in the pits of your stomach on the nights you lay awake in the dark. You want it to sit there forever.
He lets you leave him to get changed, begrudgingly. You can hear him opening and closing cupboard doors as you tie your hair up, slipping out of the linen skirt you'd been wearing. Your skin is tan as you look at yourself in the mirror, bra and shorts the only suitable attire for the sweltering evening heat. The bedroom windows are wide open, and you find yourself gazing out of them for a second. You can see the ripple of lights on water, hear distant conversation from a restaurant you'd sat in a few days ago, the greenery hanging over the window close enough for you to touch. It's still, a stark contrast to your everyday life. You wonder what would happen if you didn't go back.
The sound of the balcony doors opening steals you from your daydream. Padding across the wooden floor, back into the living room, you spot the bottle of red wine he's placed on the table outside, ashtray and deck of cards next to the glasses. A smile spreads across your face, spotting him through the arch of the kitchen, shirt off as he places slices of watermelon on a plate.
He glances at you, then glances at you again as you walk out onto the balcony. You lean against it with a glass of wine in hand, surprised when his fingers ghost up your spine. They're soft, warm, home.
"Thank you for pouring me a glass." You smile, maintaining his eye contact over the rim of the glass.
"You're very welcome, my love." He kisses your temple before taking a seat at the table, leaning back and lighting a cigarette. He takes a drag of it, and you watch as his cheeks hollow. It's inviting, bewitching almost, watching his eyes graze across the view from your balcony, hair falling perfectly, lungs inhaling.
You take your seat across from him, shuffling the cards. He watches as you do it, flicking some ash into the ashtray between you both. You deal them out as he tells you about how George had asked how the holiday was going, how long you were staying, nodding along as he talks.
The wine flows too easily, your cheeks red and glowing as you stare at him dreamily. There's a purity to it, an innocence, your eyes glazed over like a teenager with a crush.
"You're staring." He chuckles, eyebrows raised.
"What, can I not stare at my fiance?" You giggle as you mirror his earlier words, watching his face contort as he laughs. The air is bursting with love, the seams of your bubble threatening to burst as your laughter bounces around, your belly warm and mind fuzzy. "Let me have a drag." You cock your head to his cigarette and hold our your hand.
"You're not smoking a cigarette, y/n." he shakes his head with a laugh. "When have you ever smoked?"
"When I've had four glasses of Bordeaux." you giggle. The sound that escapes your lips sends him dizzy, tilting his head a little so he can see every inch of your face, warmed up by the glow of the living room light falling through the doorway. He wants to bottle this noise, this moment, this feeling.
He puts it out before you can attempt to steal it, standing up to look over the balcony. His back is broad, muscles evident as he rests his forearms on the railings, dark eyes contemplating the scenery around him. It's dark now, little caverns of light hidden in the landscape, evidence of life. Your arms snaking around his waist don't take him by surprise, a kiss pressed to the centre of his back as you rest your head against it. His skin is hot, smooth under your touch, still glazed with sunscreen and aloe moisturiser. Memories of you in fits of laughter the day before, him wincing as you lathered the cold gel onto his back, running around the house like children - you're grateful they exist, you hope they stay as vibrant as they are right now.
You can hear the strum of a guitar from a bar lower down the cliff, faint and gentle in your ears, but enough to know it's something familiar. Humming along to it, he turns around and takes your hands in his, swaying ever-so-gently. He's twinkling, sparkling under your touch, cheeks tinted pink and eyes sleepy. You're drunk on red wine, dancing with your fiance on a balcony in Italy - if only you could freeze time.
His hands move to your waist, smooth and soft under his calloused fingertips, lips pressed to yours, tongues intertwining like ivy, like the way you think your souls might be. He walks you backwards, back through the balcony doors, hitting the wall of the hallway before you can catch your breath. He pulls away, eyes so close to yours, and if you could jump into them, you would.

“You’re sure I won’t be a third wheel on the trip? You can easily make this a romantic getaway without me and I can just save my vacation time for the holidays,” you speak into your airpods softly as you walk your dog back towards your building.
“Don’t be silly! You just went through a breakup, the least I can do is support you on the sunny beaches of Greece,” your best friend replies and you can picture her eyes rolling as she speaks.
It had been six extremely long and tortured weeks since you finally ended things with Haechan and even though everyone knew it was a long time coming, it still didn’t make it any easier.
You loved your friends and had done a lot of couple things together in the past, but a romantic summer getaway as a third wheel sounded absolutely dreadful. You let yourself be convinced by the fact that you did in fact need a break from work, already had the time off scheduled, and the flights were getting towards the non-refundable window. Haechan had already cancelled his portion of the trip the minute things had started to get rocky between the two of you (which from your perspective, was a lot earlier).
Before you know it, you are curled up on a plush couch looking out the open balcony door of a beautiful villa near the ocean, many miles from your apartment still filled with memories and moments with him. Music is playing faintly on a speaker and you are catching up on a book that you had promised your cousin you would read and discuss together.
“I was thinking the two of us could go for a late lunch at that fancy hotel near the beach,” your friend offers, making her way into the living room and plopping down next to you.
“It seems expensive but lunch might be a little cheaper? And the photos of the food look amazing,” she tells you with a brush of your knee, pulling the book from your hands and sliding it on the coffee table.
You agree and try to find something that will be appropriate for the setting, slipping on one of the nicest dresses you brought with some heeled sandals. You had let your hair air dry that morning so you try to wrangle it with a large, pearlescent clip and dot some blush on your cheeks.
Walking into the stunning lobby of the hotel, you watch as expensive luggage rolls by on the marble floor and hushed discussions are held in foreign languages in the small groupings of furniture. The concierge greets you pleasantly, agreeing to check with the restaurant staff to check if they can accommodate you.
He confirms they can seat you and you and your friend follow him into a beautiful dining area that opens to a patio that blends into the beach seamlessly. You’re taken aback by the intricate painting design on the ceiling and suddenly feel yourself bump up into a firm chest.
Letting out a gasp, with a curse on the tip of your tongue, you look up to meet the dark eyes of an equally startled blonde man. He instinctively steadies your arm, gripping your bare skin lightly as his eyebrows knit lightly.
“I’m so sorry,” you manage, cheeks flushing in embarrassment as you meet his gaze.
“I was distracted by how beautiful this room is,” you add, flicking your eyes to the lingering hand on your arm.
“No trouble at all,” the man replies, dropping his hand and giving you a small smile. His lips tip up just at the corners, not revealing teeth, but still holding warmth.
He’s absolutely gorgeous, sandy blonde hair slicked back with a couple strands dangling in front of strong brows and sunkissed skin. He’s dressed in business attire, with a light gray suit and cream button up with one more button undone than you would expect, no tie. His other hand is casually dipped into his pants pocket, revealing an expensive leather belt.
“Are you staying with us at The Cove?” he asked, eyes narrowing as he smiled a flashing grin.
“Oh no, no,” you stutter out, making a gesture to your friend who is looking at you with wide eyes from the table she had been escorted to.
“I’m just here having lunch with a friend, we are staying nearby,” you finish, pulling your hand up to your forearm to stroke it nervously.
“Ah, I see. Well I hope you have a lovely meal then…” he trails off, expecting you to reply with your name.
“Thanks!” you blurt out, overlapping the end of his sentence and brushing past him, your cheeks flushing deeply as you practically jump into the chair being held out for you by the waiter at your table.
The mystery man smiles again, shaking his head lightly and scratching at his temple before ducking into a booth in the back of the restaurant, out of your view.
“What was that all about?” your friend murmurs from behind the large menu. Her eyes are glittering and you know there is no way to hide how flustered you are from the brief exchange.
“Nothing, nothing, I think he works here,” you reply, before moving the discussion to what you plan on ordering, starting with a much needed glass of wine.
The well dressed waiter is soon at your table again with a bottle of champagne in his hand, wrapped in a white cloth.
“Oh no, we didn’t order any drinks yet,” your friend is quick to clarify, seeing the orange label on the bottle and your eyes widening at the expensive drink.
“No trouble, Miss, this is courtesy of the property staff to thank you for joining us for lunch this afternoon,” he replies smoothly, uncorking the bottle and pouring expertly into two waiting flutes.
You turn over your shoulder, scanning the room for the booth the blonde man had slid into and see him smiling at you, lifting his own glass of champagne towards you. In a moment of confidence, you take your own glass from the table and lift it towards him before taking a small sip and turning back around.
When you turn back around your friend raises her eyebrows before clinking her glass to yours, chuckling into the bubbly liquid.
After the most delicious meal you’ve ever had, your friend heads to the restroom to “not miss out on the chance to see what kind of bougie soap and hand towels are in there” and you once again find yourself standing in the marble lobby, feeling underdressed.
“I hope to see you again,” comes a low voice from behind you and you turn to find yourself face to face (well, face to broad chest due to the height difference) with the tall stranger again.
“Oh do you?” you ask with a smirk, stepping a little closer to him as you turn around, feeling the confidence bubble in your chest once again. You hadn’t dated much in the short time you’d been single, swiping a little here and there on some apps when the loneliness started to hit you hard and going home with a hot bartender from the corner pub by your office who said she had been trying to hit on you for years.
But something about this mysterious and to be completely honest, seemingly rich man piqued your curiosity. He seemed confident but not cocky, reserved but still warm, and might have lived on another planet with how far outside your normal life he was.
“In the restaurant, of course. We have a lovely brunch service on the weekends,” he replies with a wink, extending a hand with a small pearly green business card to you.
“Oh yes, for brunch,” you reply simply, taking the business card and examining it to find that he is the Director of Marketing for the company that owns the hotel property.
“And should I call you, Jaehyun, to make the reservation,” you ask with a smile, sliding the card into your purse.
“You absolutely can, you also can call me if you need anything else during your visit. I spend my summers here locally as there are many events my team manages during the busy season,” he replies with a small laugh, reaching up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear.
You blush as his fingers brush against your cheek, resisting the urge to lean into the palm of his hand that seems to linger by your face.
Footsteps and a quiet throat clearing behind you indicate that your friend has joined you and you know that the best thing to do in this moment is to leave without letting this conversation wander any further.
You thank Jaehyun again for the champagne, offering your name and which villa you’re staying at down the road as small breadcrumbs, still knowing you still have the ball in your court with his business card.
Your friend is giggling your whole walk back, punching you in the arm lightly at the luck you seem to have, even on vacation.
--
The next night you are seated in the luxurious dining room again, across from Jaehyun, wearing a new dress purchased from a boutique in the small seaside town. A freshwater pearl necklace is draping deep into the low cut dress and silver bangles clinking on together on your wrist when you dot your napkin on your glossy lips.
You had let your friend help you get ready for the date, pinning up your beachy waves with a few curly strands hanging seductively by your cheeks. Light makeup adorns your cheeks and your bare arms aren’t cold after spending a day in the sun.
You can’t take your eyes off Jaehyun in his crisp striped blue and orange shirt, tucked into dark grey trousers with leather shoes that you know cost as much as your car payment. He looks more casual than he did the first time you met him, but still dressed appropriately for the high end setting.
You’re sipping champagne again, which Jaehyun has admitted is one of his guilty pleasures. When you sat down at the table, the server immediately brought over the bottle to pour for both of you, explaining the chef was preparing multiple courses, planned specially for the two of you. You merely shook your head at Jaehyun, slightly embarrassed by the fuss he went through for a date with a total stranger.
“Ah, Jae!” comes a booming and high pitched laugh, accompanying the toothy grin of a dark haired man.
Jaehyun places his glass on the table and stands to extend a hand to the man, who swats it away and wraps him in a hug.
“Taeyong and I just got here and are ready to party!”
The man who you soon learn is Mark, a junior member of Jaehyun’s team and an old friend from college, exclaims, voice a little too loud for the hushed tones of the restaurant. He’s cute with a big boyish grin across his face.
“Well I was hoping you and Taeyong would be here and ready to work,” Jaehyun drones back, glancing at you, looking to be a mixture of embarrassed and amused.
“Oh come on, Jeong, loosen up! The season doesn’t really start until next week and the company just closed that huge deal, let’s go dancing tonight!” Mark continues, swiping a thin breadstick from the basket on the table and taking a bite off the end.
“I will have to see what my date wants to do, but I’ll text you,” Jaehyun says with a roll of his eyes, placing a warning hand on Mark’s shoulder and gesturing for him to make his exit.
Mark’s eyes widen and you chuckle into your napkin. It seems as if in this moment he finally realizes Jaehyun is on a date with you and he drags his eyes over you slowly. He stammers out some sort of excuse before bowing his head lightly and quickly walks away to join a steel gray haired man who is laughing at him near the entrance of the restaurant.
“Sorry about them,” Jaehyun mutters, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand as he settles back in his seat.
“They mean well and are great at their jobs,” he continues as the waiter returns with intricate salads topped with fresh seafood.
“And they are two of my oldest friends, so I trust them to work for me and also keep me in check for when I need to loosen up a little,” Jaehyun adds before sliding a perfectly grilled shrimp into his mouth.
The dinner continues without any additional interruptions or excitement and your stomach jumps when he suggests meeting up with Mark and Taeyong at a nearby club. Tipsy from a few glasses but eager to see where the night takes you, you send a quick message to your friend checking in before following Jaehyun to a waiting shiny car outside the hotel.
A few shots of ouzo later, the four of you are on the dance floor and you’re currently losing a dance battle with Mark, while Taeyong is about to lock lips with a tall Greek man nearby. Mark is cackling with laughter as you start the chicken dance and he mimics your moves, doubled over at the waist and sloshing some of his beer on the floor.
You turn over your shoulder to lock eyes with Jaehyun, who is swaying slowly to the music, gripping his own drink and smiling at you lazily. His eyes are narrow and his grin stretches ear to ear. His shirt has become unbuttoned over the course of the night, hanging loosely and revealing his toned chest. The gel that once held his hair in place has lost its grip and the strands are damp from sweat.
“Getting tired, Mr. Marketing Director?” you tease, resting your chin on your own shoulder as you watch him and take a long swig from the straw in your drink.
“Oh I can do this all day, back it up, back it up,” Jaehyun unexpectedly purrs in your ear, gripping at the silky fabric at your waist, pulling you flush up against him.
You instinctively melt your head back into his shoulder, opening up a wide expanse of your neck for him to claim. Jaehyun dips down, lips brushing against your skin in a warm kiss, inhaling to take in the scent of your perfume and light sweat developing in the heat of the cramped dance floor.
You can’t hold in the moan that falls from your lips and despite the loud music and laughter in the club, Mark hears you, eyes growing impossibly wide once again and he blushes, dipping his head down and turning to head back to the bar.
Someone else hears you, making eye contact with you briefly before tipping his drink up to you and giving you a thousand watt smile. Your heart leaps briefly in your chest before he nods at you, as if encouraging you to continue. He has kind brown eyes and fluffy, curly hair and has a beautiful, tall, older woman wrapped in his arms as he dances in time to the music.
You take this opportunity to turn in Jaehyun’s arms, looping around his neck and drawing your lips close to his ear to whisper before he’s nodding and dragging you eagerly by the hand out of the club.
Your head is spinning as you stand in his massive suite at the hotel, still unable to believe how a few short nights in Greece have led to you spending the night with this man at a five star resort that you would never have the funds to visit yourself.
Jaehyun is behind you again, hands dragging down your sides and gripping at your hips, hiking your dress up to expose your thighs. He has his face nuzzled in your neck again and you begin to realize this position turns him on as you feel his growing erection press into your ass.
“As the head of the marketing department, it’s very important that I make sure every person who visits the property has a top tier experience,” he murmurs in your ear, capturing your lobe in his teeth and tugging lightly before releasing it.
“So this is the type of service you provide to all visitors? Or only young attractive, recently single ones?” you flirt back, reaching your hand between you to palm at his crotch.
He moans at your touch, sending vibrations along your neck and shooting sparks to your core. He never answers you but you know from the way he whips your dress up over your head, unclasps your bra with his teeth and pulls you into his lap at the edge of the bed, that he hasn’t gotten his dick wet in a while. You learn later that despite his team all being around the same age, he feels a sense of responsibility to focus on work, always available for a call or to hop on a red eye to meet with clients in another country. He was lucky to have this job, coming from more humble beginnings, and rising up the corporate ladder was a way for him to feel confident and accomplished.
Straddling him on the edge of the bed, now only wearing your lacy nude panties, you push his shirt off his shoulders before moving to his belt, dragging your tongue along his neck, painfully slow. He sighs into your touch, moving a strong hand to your upper back before pulling the tips of his fingers up and down your spine, stroking your soft skin tenderly. You rise up on your knees to let him push his pants and briefs down, pausing and looking at him straight in the eye once you are both naked.
“I promise, I’m not the asshole businessman you think I am,” he mutters to you, taking both sides of your face in his warm hands, pulling you in for a deep and passionate kiss.
You feel arousal begin rapidly in your stomach, thighs pulling together instinctively as he slides his tongue in your mouth. In a stark contrast to his gentle eyes and beautiful mouth that you moan into, his hands are back at your hips gripping the delicate fabric and ripping the underwear from your body, letting the soaked lace fall from his fingertips to the floor.
His hand is back on you, cupping your ass and pulling you down onto his crotch, a gasp flying out of your mouth as your core comes in contact with his hard cock. He feels so good and you want nothing more than to lift up so he can slide into you before mid-lust clarity floods back in.
“Does the not-asshole-businessman have a condom?” you chuckle into his mouth, tugging his bottom lip with your teeth as you give him an inquisitive look.
He laughs and nods gesturing to a small pouch on the bedside table, which you reach for from your seated position and let him slide it on. The tip of his cock is flushed with arousal and leaking precum, which you can’t help but lick your lips at the sight of.
As soon as the condom is on, he is pushing up into you, hands gripping at your waist in a motion you know will leave faint bruises. He’s quiet, not making many noises as he picks a steady pace as he pounds into you. Small grunts and quiet moans do escape his lips every once and a while and you find yourself trying to tamp down the noises building in your own chest.
Your whole body is buzzing with pleasure as you arch your back when he presses up into your g-spot, your hardened nipples brushing against his chest. Your reaction clearly affects him as he pulls a hand up to press your chest closer to his and you swear you can feel his heart beating against your own.
You do your best to match the pace, thighs burning from the hours of walking in the town earlier and tonight’s dancing. His hands find purchase at your waist most of the time, occasionally cupping your ass after delivering a light slap. His eyes are shut tightly and you study his strained expression, seeing how close he must be to the edge. You know you won’t last much longer either, from the hours of drinks and a long day spent in the hot sun.
“So big,” you breathe out, panting as you desperately hope you can climax together just from this one position. It’s all you can manage to say, despite the paragraphs of praise flooding your brain.
At the sound of your voice he rips his eyes open, a hungry gaze settling on you as he grabs at you and falls back, moving you both up to the center of the bed in a swift motion. The switch in position almost sends you over the edge as you dig your knees into the plush duvet and continue bouncing on his dick at the same pace he had kept.
His movements start to become more erratic as he reaches up to grab your hair, tugging hard to force a scream from your trembling lips. The pain sends you plummeting into your orgasm, clenching hard around him as he releases into the condom.
You both slow your movements and you lean forward, steadying yourself with your hand on his chest, grinding slow circles on his aching and overstimulated cock as you come down from your high. When your face meets his, you press your foreheads together, folding your bodies into each other and can’t help but breath heavy sighs across his lips.
“Hope you leave us a good review,” Jaehyun murmurs lightly before pressing up into your lips, wrapping his arms around your waist gently, as if there is any more space between you to close.
His voice is still steely and low, but holds hints of an emotion you can’t quite place.
--
It’s late morning when you finally walk the shore on your way back to the villa, dress covering your aching and bare lower half, sandals dangling from your fingertips, and one of Jaehyun’s linen shirts open to shield your arms from the morning sun. Avoiding a small family playing at the shoreline, you walk up a small path and wander into a small cafe that hadn’t been open the other day when you had been at the beach.
You approach the counter, decorated with fresh flowers in short antique glassware and smile at the faint sounds of Edith Piaf floating over the speaker. You let your eyes slip shut briefly, breathing in the salty air and tinkling sounds of mismatched coffee cups the other patrons are sipping from at small circular tables.
“I’m guessing you need at least a double shot to help recover from that late night,” comes a warm voice and you quickly open your eyes, met with a smiling man with fluffy brown hair and glittering dark eyes. He is wearing a brown apron over a mesh crochet shirt and he’s already pulling a disposable cup off the stack next to the register and flipping some switches on the espresso machine.
“Oh, so you know my coffee order? And what I did last night, apparently?” you muse, leaning against the counter gently on your palms. You feel suddenly slightly self conscious, unshowered and the breeze whipping up every once and a while making you fear that the light dress might get caught up and leave you exposed from the waist down.
“Well I just know that after hours of dancing and staying out all night, I usually make myself an iced americano with four shots and no water,” he laughs back at you, starting to pull shots from the machine and filling the cup with ice.
“Four shots and no water?!” you ask, voice pitching up in shock. His bright and wide eyes give you the impression he wasn’t joking and that he had already had quite a few cups of coffee that morning.
As you take the cup from him and pull the straw extended from his other hand, you cock your head to the side lightly, studying his face carefully. He seems almost familiar?
“Wait, do I know you?” you ask, wracking your brain for where you could have seen him before.
He nods back at you in reply, drawing his lips up into a devious smirk. The same devious smirk you had been met with last night on the dance floor when you moaned loudly from Jaehyun’s mouth on your neck.
“The club…” you trail off, taking a sip from the straw and nodding in approval at the smooth and bold flavor. “I had had a few drinks.”
“You looked like you were getting a little more than tipsy,” he replies, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
You flush, gaze dropping down to the floor, taking the chance to take another sip of your drink. You’re unable to stop the tightening in your core at the thought of Jaehyun and his broad shoulders and the filthy drag of his cock on your walls.
“Looks like you had a good time though, I don’t know how a pretty girl like you wouldn’t,” he adds, walking around from behind the counter to lean against it.
“I’m Jaemin by the way,” he finishes, offering a bright smile again.
“I’m visiting Greece with friends, we’re here on vacation,” you reply, brain otherwise blank.
He’s kind and nice to talk to, telling an older woman arranging the pastries in the case that he’s taking a short break, walking with you out to the shore again, letting the morning tide lap at your bare ankles as you stand side by side.
His hair is caught up by the passing breeze and everything about him is light and airy. The conversation moves so casually and quickly, you learn he teaches at a school for deaf children but during the summer works with his family at the cafe and spends his evenings swimming or visiting the different islands. You compliment his crochet shirt, learning he made it himself from recycled fibers from a yarn local shop and that he volunteers to collect ocean trash with some high school kids on the weekends.
Before you know it, you’ve been talking to him for almost an hour, the ice in your cup long melted but agree to come back for another beach stroll later tonight when he’s done working and running errands for his grandmother. He takes your coffee cup from you, gaze lingering on you as you disappear down the beach and towards your villa.
--
“Another date with another guy?!” your friend practically shrieks as you walk out of the bathroom wrapped in a fluffy towel.
“Oh hush, I’m on vacation, aren’t I?” you laugh at her, whipping your hair towel at her legs, causing her to feign injury and flop on your bed.
“Something’s gotten into my best friend, but I’m here for it,” she replies, clicking into your unlocked phone on the bed to see text conversations with both Jaehyun and Jaemin. They were both waiting for replies from you and your friend was so desperate to stir the pot that forwards the two phone numbers to her own phone.
Late that night, hours after you’ve had dinner with your friends, a beach stroll turns into sharing a bottle of red wine and a pack of skinny cigarettes on a blanket on a quiet part of the beach that Jaemin explains is “more of a local spot”. He’s giggly and flushed from the wine and you can’t help but stare at his lips every time he brings the bottle to them to take a long sip.
After you’ve finished the bottle, he proposes some more walking to take in the view of the night sky. You oblige him, watching him spin around with his arms open as he loudly tells you about the different constellations bright in the sky overhead. He’s giddy and in teacher mode, letting you repeat back the names as he points each one out.
“Wait, isn’t this private property?” you ask as you reach a recognizable patch of the beach area, looking up to see The Cove hotel up ahead.
“You mean this gentrifying, modern atrocity that they are planning on ripping down half of the beach-side businesses to expand?” Jaemin asks with a laugh, lacing his fingers with yours and pulling you over to a small paved area with a fire pit. He places the wine bottle and blanket on a chair and lets his sandals drop to the ground next to them.
“That big company comes in, takes up some of the best views on the shore, and then charges ridiculous prices that only millionaires can afford. They don’t even let us collect trash from the ocean floor anywhere near where their guests can jet ski - which only makes it more dangerous!” he continues, peeling off his shirt and tugging at the string of his shorts.
“What are you doing,” you hiss, pulling your arms to your chest in the cool evening breeze.
“Let’s go swim,” he murmurs into your hair and you feel his nose scrunch up when he smiles, pulling his shorts and boxers down together as he runs towards the water’s edge.
Your clothes are on the ground faster than you would have liked to admit and you cover your chest with your arm as you run towards the ocean, pushing back thoughts that you’re about to be skinny dipping with a guy you haven’t even kissed.
You’ve waded out just far enough where the water is almost covering the tips of your shoulders, your hair half drenched as it floats around you in the moonlight. Jaemin’s big smile is visible even in the dark, and his hands are high on your waist as he pulls you towards him, slotting your lips effortlessly into his.
You sigh into the kiss, letting your legs wrap around his waist to keep you from dipping under the water as you relax into his hold. Just as you start to deepen the kiss, you suddenly are plunged under the water, Jaemin having dragged you under with him, before emerging with both of you gasping for air.
“JAEMIN!” you scream, swatting at his back as he holds you even tighter to your chest, kissing up and down your neck.
“I just wanted to get wet,” he giggles, voice lifting an octave as you bring a loud slap to his damp skin.
You are about to bring a snarky retort from your lips until you suddenly feel his erection brush over your clit, exposed by your position. A loud moan tumbles from your open mouth instead, grabbing at the back of Jaemin’s neck to crash your lips into his, biting down on his bottom lip aggressively. He returns the intensity by gripping your waist and reaching his other hand down plunge two fingers into your core, thumb brushing your clit expertly.
You gasp and bite down hard on his shoulder, overcome with the feeling of his long fingers pumping in and out of you relentlessly and the small waves forming around you in the night air.
Unlike quiet Jaehyun, Jaemin doesn’t keep his reactions bottled up. He’s groaning loudly in your ear, moaning out your name, and stringing filthy words together that would have made even your most sexually adventurous friends blush. You’re shocked that smiley-save-the-world-Jaemin has this dark and kinky side to him but not disappointed in the slightest.
He brings you to climax from his fingers alone and you’re soon wading towards the shore, hands all over each other as you get to the shallow water, dropping quickly to your knees and taking his massive cock in between your swollen lips. He’s standing above you, his muscled silhouette stunning in the front of the seaside view, pushing your soaked hair out of your face as you lap your tongue out at his tip, teasing his slit.
He clicks his tongue and moves his hand to the front of your throat, giving a confident but careful squeeze in the exact placement for the perfect balance of pain and pleasure. You gasp and dart your tongue along the vein on the underside of his flushed member, keeping eye contact with him the entire time, even as the sand begins to grind into your knees underwater.
“Don’t tease me, baby,” he says with a squeeze, his tone all you need to push him into your mouth fully and hollow your cheeks around his length. You moan for good measure, knowing the vibrations sent up his body are what forces his head back in ecstasy. He comes across your chest with both of you screaming in pleasure and you swim back out into the deeper water to clean off before putting your clothes back on your damp bodies and wander back over to your secluded spot further down the beach.
“I’ve never stayed up to watch the sunrise before,” you admit a few hours later, sighing as you drag your fingers absently over his exposed abdomen, shirt hiked up high on his chest.
“I wanna be your sunrise, girllllll,” he sighs out, sleepy as he pushes his head closer to you on the soft sand.
You turn your head to face Jaemin, taking in his relaxed face and bright smile. Reaching up, you card your fingers through his hair, resting your palm against the back of his neck to stroke the shorter strands there.
The horizon is burning a beautiful blend of reds and oranges, the glistening blue water dark and mysterious in contrast. The sun is illuminating Jaemin’s features in a glowy haze and exhaustion is settling in, pushing your eyelids down. You stand, pulling him up and letting him drag you back to the cramped room above the cafe where he has spent every summer since he was a kid. Your knees knock together as he pushes you down on the bed and has you moaning from just his fingers in seconds.
You end up spending the rest of the day with him, letting him make you breakfast in the back kitchen of the cafe and greet his family members and only feel slightly embarrassed when his grandmother strokes your cheek and mutters something that you don’t understand, causing Jaemin to squeal and usher her out of the room.
He wraps his arms around your waist lazily, pulling himself closer to you as you are perched on the stool, dragging your lips up to his and sliding his tongue along your lower lip and you think you might combust right then and there.
When doubt and negative thoughts start seeping in, your own voice echoes in your ears, I’m on vacation, aren’t I?
--
The rest of the week flies by and your last evening is spent cooking up everything left in the fridge, your friend’s partner grilling shrimp and scallops on the small grill on the balcony and you chopping up fresh fruit at the small kitchen island.
A knock at the door of the villa draws an inquisitive glare from you as you shoot daggers at your friend who has her head in the fridge.
“What did you do?” you ask, wiping your hands on a towel and heading towards the door.
You pull open the door to find a smiling Jaehyun, looking absolutely ethereal in a knit orange sleeveless shirt, muscular arms accentuated by the cut of the fabric. It’s half tucked into mustard linen pants and he’s wearing some beaded bracelets and a necklace dotted with pearls and dainty charms.
“Hi,” he says quietly, pushing forward to brush his lips across your cheek, hand finding your hip naturally and squeezing gently.
You close the door with a shake of your head as you watch him slide his shoes off and move to the kitchen to present a bottle of expensive ouzo to your friend who is smiling huge at his arrival.
“I thought it would be nice for Jaehyun to join us for dinner on his last night here, don’t you think?” she asks, mischief clear across your face.
All you can do is smile and shake your head at her and let Jaehyun pull you closer to him as he sits on a tall barstool.
“Is it okay I came?” he asks softly, brushing his nose against yours after he speaks.
“Of course, of course it is. I was going to come by the hotel in the morning for breakfast before we left and bring you your shirt anyways,” you reply, leaning forward to capture his lips in yours softly.
You hadn’t quite figured out how to manage the week full of tender moments with the two gorgeous men you met on the island. But now Jaehyun stood in front of you, looking radiant and strong, stoic but still warm and you couldn’t help but feel your heart swell. Your mind flew forward years into the future, wondering what it would be like to date or even marry an executive at a luxury hospitality company, jet setting around the world and working for your company remotely, spending evenings and weekends with him in private dining rooms and lavish suites.
“I’m going to go clip some flowers from the front of the house for the table,” your friend offers, breaking into your foggy and far away mind, pulling you back to reality. You part from Jaehyun, moving to place the cold bottle he brought into the freezer to let it continue to chill and offer him a beer from the fridge.
“Well well well, look who I found outside,” your friend calls from the door as you pull your head back up, two bottles gripped in between your fingers. You almost drop them as Jaemin rounds the corner, a large bouquet of flowers held in his hands. He’s dressed casually, tan cargo shorts and a shirt that faintly says “Save the Turtles!”, hair damp and sticking to his forehead and back of his neck.
“Jaemin…” you start, catching one of the bottles as it starts to slip before Jaehyun moves towards you and takes them from you to open them. His eyes are narrow as he looks at Jaemin, steely gaze cold and unreadable.
You cross the kitchen and grip your friend tightly on her forearm, dragging her into your bedroom, offering little more than a weak smile to Jaemin as you brush past him.
“What the hell were you thinking?! Inviting them both here?” you ask her, wanting so badly to scream, but trying to maintain some level of control over the situation.
“Oh calm down, you know you wanted to see them both again before we leave and I know you. You would have sat here moaning and weighing the pros and cons for so long that it would have been too late. So I made the choice for you! And you can make the decision who you want to end the night with in your bed,” she finishes with a wink, dragging a finger under her eye to clean the smudged mascara there.
Dinner is far less awkward than you thought it would be, pleasant conversation being held by your friend and Jaemin, both extroverted Leos never happy leaving uncomfortable silence. Jaehyun chimes in every once and a while, making small comments and answering questions when asked, but mostly spending his time focusing his gaze on his water glass or making eye contact with you as he reaches out under the table to squeeze your knee.
Jaemin only makes a few jabs at Jaehyun’s expense, one about his company’s lack of focus on ecological conservation and another at his “bottle blonde bimbo hair”. You run fingertips lightly through said hair, muttering a soft compliment in his direction, to which Jaemin just smiles and asks if Jaehyun’s curtains match the drapes.
Jaemin is a few beers in and offers to get more salad from the kitchen for the table, returning to throw an arm loosely around the back of your chair. Jaehyun doesn’t even look towards the gesture, instead pushing up the fabric at your knee to rub small circles on your skin with his thumb, taking a long drink of water. Jaemin’s fingers are brushing across your exposed back, pushing your hair out of the way to let him caress you there.
You gulp audibly and take a long sip of wine, suddenly feeling like the room is a thousand degrees hotter as your friends bring frosty gelato out and the ouzo bottle is finally opened. Jaehyun’s hand is at your knee again and your legs are crossed at this point, thighs pushing together in desperate attempts to regulate your heart rate.
Suddenly, you feel a second hand at your knee and you dart worried eyes over to Jaemin, who is beaming like the Cheshire Cat. You flip your gaze over to Jaehyun, who despite the fact that his fingers are now brushing up against the other man’s doesn’t move his hand and if anything, leans more into the touch. Just as Jaemin’s hand makes a bold move to slide under the hem of your short and flowy skirt, you clear your throat, causing them both to pull away.
“Maybe we can go down to the beach? Take the drinks there? It’s getting a little warm in here,” you croak out, meeting the cheeky gaze of your best friend across the table.
“I think we will stay in and clean up, but you kids go have fun,” she laughs out, sipping from her wine glass as her partner plants a kiss on her shoulder. You give her one final glare before following the two men (your two dates?) out the door of the villa and down the rocky path to the beach.
The sun has fully disappeared into the horizon an hour later and the ouzo bottle is almost empty as you each slam a glass down on the tray. Jaemin stands and says he has to pee, wandering off to a darker and secluded area of the beach as you wiggle closer to Jaehyun and he adjusts to let you sit in between his legs, facing him.
“Having fun?” he asks, voice even as he brushes a strand of hair caught on your eyelash.
“Are you? I’m sure this is way more than you agreed to when my friend invited you to dinner,” you reply, worry lacing your voice. You enjoyed your time with both of them this week and part of you was still afraid to make any sort of decision (as if a decision were needed during brief holiday flings) because you knew it meant admitting you liked one of them more than the other.
“Don’t worry your pretty head about that,” he replied, pulling your lips to his and kissing you gently. His hand finds your elbow and pulls you closer to him, drawing out goosebumps from your skin.
“Yeah, pretty girls like you should just be accessories on a rich man’s arm, don’t you know that, silly,” comes Jaemin’s loud voice from behind you, drawing a glare from Jaehyun as he breaks the kiss and pulls back.
You feel Jaemin behind you, dropping a strong hand down to your shoulder before moving it to your neck, tracing along the sides with his long fingers before finding that same comfortable grip that made your toes curl in his room a few nights earlier.
Jaehyun smirks at the sight, dropping his own hand to the hem of your skirt, sliding along your thighs and quickly finding the edge of your panties. You gasp as he slips underneath the fabric and traces slow circles along you, arousal building there and collecting on his soft fingers. Jaemin drops to his knees, pushing your shirt up to grope at your chest from behind you, dipping his lips down to mouth at your neck. The scents of the colognes are mixing together in perfect harmony, somehow working so well despite being opposite notes and undertones.
You blink back the urge to let your eyes flutter shut and sit in near silence, save the small whines that slip out of your parted lips as you are overwhelmed with the feeling of the two of you touching you at the same time. You had thought the brushing of their hands against each other at the dining room had been an accident and that both of them were playing it cool. That now appears to be far from the truth.
“Alright, Mr. Big Shot, I know you have some sort of big ass suite with a California King that will fit all three of us, so what are we waiting for,” Jaemin winks at you as he throws an arm around the other man’s neck, dragging his lips to Jaehyun’s waiting ones and running that wicked tongue against the roof of his mouth. Jaehyun kisses him back feverishly, gripping at his hip the same way he had touched you countless times before and even chases Jaemin’s lips when he finally pulls away.
“Oh so now you don’t mind coming to the capitalist hellscape that is the hotel bringing consistent tourism revenue to this town?” Jaehyun bites back, cupping Jaemin’s strong jaw and running his thumb along his bottom lip to clean the saliva that had gathered there from their steamy kiss.
You gulp hard, eyes taking in the sight of the two of them lip-locked and suck in a deep, centering breath.
You knew that this night was far from over and that this vacation was one you would never forget.

As the hours stretched into the evening, the adventures with your friends continued unabated, each moment infused with the vibrant energy of youthful exuberance and boundless possibility. From the bustling corridors of the mall to the neon-lit confines of fast food joints, and finally to the serene expanse of the beach, the journey unfolded like a tapestry woven from the threads of shared laughter and cherished memories.
Despite the chill in the air, the allure of the bioluminescent lights dancing upon the ocean's surface proved irresistible, casting a magical spell over the tranquil night. Against the backdrop of the shimmering waves, the world seemed to take on an otherworldly charm, enveloping you in a cocoon of wonder and awe.
Sitting in a blanket under the starry night, you and your friends enjoyed each other's company. It was a chill night, one you'd expect for the beginning of winter. But you barely registered it, focusing more on your own thoughts. The sound of waves crashing against the shore could be heard in the distance, a soft background melody. And despite the darkness, you could make out the silhouettes of your friends as they laughed and chatted, their voices carrying on the wind.
You had been wondering how Wanda was doing so you decided to go home early. The cold mist in the air made your face feel a bit prickly as you walked back home under the night sky. The sounds of laughter and the waves rolling onto shore seemed to get louder the further you traveled.
When you got home, however, it was eerily quiet. You wondered if everyone was asleep but decided to check the living room. That's when you saw Wanda sitting in front of the TV, in her pajamas and wrapped in your hoodie.
“Hey Wands,” You smiled. She had always hated that nickname, thinking it as something childish, but that’s why you loved using it!
A bright smile crosses her lips, her cheeks turning a soft rosy pink. She seems a bit embarrassed by the nickname, but she forces herself to laugh it off. “Hi.” She turns away, her hands fidgeting idly with her sleeves. There was a brief, awkward silence before she breaks the ice. “I… did you have fun tonight?”
“Yeah, we went to a lot of places. But you wouldn’t know any of them since you’re such an old woman.” She lets out a quiet laugh at your teasing. “I might be an old woman, but at least my back doesn’t hurt from sitting on these chairs like someone’s mother.” She turns to face you and smiles, her gaze focused entirely on your form. The two of you stare at each other in silence, a hint of playful teasing in the air.
Wanda can’t help but notice how your eyes seem to linger on her in an almost flirtatious way. It’s as if you are undressing her with your eyes, taking her all in.
“What are you watching? Fifty Shades?” You teased again. She scowls, her cheeks turning a warm pink. She clears her throat and tries to laugh it off again. “No, I’d like to continue having my eyesight thank you very much.”
There’s another pause in the silence. Wanda glances away, her fingers toying with the fabric of your hoodie. She can’t help but notice how you were eyeing her up and down again. She looks away, her voice barely audible. “Do you think this… sweater does make me look like an old woman though?”
“Oh no, I was just joking. Why? Has marriage finally ruin your sense of humor?” She laughs softly, covering her lips to suppress the noise. The teasing comment felt different to her than all the others you usually make. A hint of insecurity creeps into her features. She knows you're joking, but still, she can't help but wonder if there's at least a little bit of truth in your words. Because Wanda knows that you've thought about that very thing.
She shakes her head and leans back in the chair, keeping her gaze averted. "No, not really. I was more curious to hear your honest opinion."
“Oh, okay.” There was a deafening silence once again until something had been brought up in your mind. “How is dad? I know he’s been taken certain pills, but how is he in that field?” "He's been better," Wanda whispers, letting out a breath of relief as you asked about your father instead of her. She pauses for a moment, her eyes narrowing towards your form. "He's been taking his medication more regularly, for starters, but most days he seems… distant. I know he's still adjusting to all of this, but it makes me a bit nervous for his health."
She sighs and looks away, running her hands through her hair. "But at least he's trying, I guess."
“Yeah, he said that he wants to try for another kid before he kicks the bucket.”
She freezes in her seat, her heart skipping a beat. She couldn’t help but notice how the color drained from her cheeks and a subtle flicker of irritation danced in her eyes. “What? When did he say this to you?” She bites her lip to suppress the anger, her voice tight and strained.
“Couple days ago, why? Do you not want to have a kid?” She stares at you for a few seconds before responding, her voice a mixture of resentment and hurt. “Of course I’d like to have a child one day, obviously.” She bites back the urge to yell or snap and tries to keep her cool. “But I’m still young, unlike some people I know.”
She crosses her arms over her chest, holding your hoodie tighter. She could feel the blood rushing to her face and a slight blush rising to her cheeks.
“Yeah, well you’re not the only one he’s pressuring.” You sigh, remembering his conversations with you about the future. “He wants me to settle down with some rich dude and have lots of kids.” She raises an eyebrow. "Your dad wants you to settle down?" She pauses and laughs to herself. "Of all people? That's ironic."
Wanda's tone is playful but it's hard to ignore a hint of annoyance when you mentioned your father's desire for you to get married one day. She takes a deep breath, trying to contain her jealousy.
“What what? There must be at least one person who wants to marry me!”
"Yeah, I doubt that," she laughs, teasing you playfully. "No guy is interested in marrying the nerdy virgin who can't even maintain eye contact with them."
Her comment seemed innocent, but there was a sudden shift in her expression as she seemed to realize what she said. Her hands gripped tight the sleeves of your hoodie, and her voice became softer, a hint of worry seeping in.
"I… I didn't mean that," she whispers, noticing how your eyes seemed to widen for a second. "I was jus–“ She shrugs, looking away, her hands slowly letting go of your hoodie. “Never mind.”
“Say it.” Your voice was heavy. Her throat clamps up and she can feel her emotions spiraling inside her. She glances back at you for a moment, her eyes lingering on your face. But then she abruptly looks away. "Nothing," she whispers, avoiding your gaze entirely.
You grabbed her shoulder, gripping it tightly, and stared directly into her. “Tell me.”
She flinches a bit when you grab her shoulder and her breathing hitches. Your sudden, aggressive tone catches her off guard. She hesitates for a moment before finally speaking up, taking a deep breath as she does so.
"I was only going to say that there are definitely people interested in you. I'm sure of it."
Her words felt half-assed at best, like she was telling you what should have been so obvious.
With a softened gaze and a gentle release, you allowed your hand to slip from her shoulder, settling back into your own space with a sense of quiet gratitude. "Oh, thanks..." The words, though simple, carried a weight of appreciation.
She nods slightly, her eyes still not meeting yours. There’s a few seconds of silence between the two of you. Wanda fidgets nervously with her fingers, trying to push away any lingering awkwardness from your sudden outburst. Her eyes dart around for a moment before finally settling on the TV screen.
“So…” She clears her throat and changes the topic, although she couldn’t help but notice how her heart was still beating out of her chest.
“Want to watch a cheesy romcom?”

LET TWO EYES BE UNDECEIVED: EXTRA SCENE
900-something words. barely any dialogue.
masterlist | recommended song
Tumblr media
-
𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝐁𝐄 𝐋𝐘𝐍𝐄𝐘’𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐔𝐄, but there was once a point when he could not speak. He seldom remembers this time, but a hazy memory slots itself in here and there.
Instead of a parent, or a teacher, or a sibling, the one who had passed down the art of complex language to him was none other than you. A dear friend, a close confidant, a closer enemy still. A liar. A thief, and a damn good one at that, for his heart was yours before he ever fathomed having it in his possession.
-
The sun is barely up when you awaken, curled up in a makeshift bed of cardboard boxes in an alley beside a bookstore, the cold still gnawing at your skin. You did not remember your dreams, though you can recall reading something that mentioned you had them anyway.
The sky, violet and rose and ebony, is still glittering with the faint remnants of the stars as they are draped in silks by the daylight. The smell of smoke clouds the breeze, cold winter air coaxing steam from the pipes hidden in the city’s maw to turn into fog; Gardemeks clatter and chitter and fill the blanks the rumbling underground leaves, an incessant buzz in your ears you’re never to be rid of; Lyney and Lynette sleep peaceful and still in a little pile. The birds caw from the buildings towering above you, chasing off the last of the night’s darkness hiding in little corners; little corners like the one you’re in, huddled alone and shivering even after the shadows recede.
Lyney’s dreams fill him with hazy thoughts, warmth in his chest, a fluttering heartbeat like a fading star. His fingers twitch against the grimy ground as he sees himself grabbing onto bulle fruit from the highest branches he can reach. It’s paint on a canvas long since burned, history and future charred to bits until they are unrecognizable and mistaken for each other. It’s fuzzy, foggy, distant, reveries of rainbow roses and rivers glinting in the sun. When he tries to ponder, to dig deep and grab onto a memory these visions might lead to, his mind fails him.
He stirs next, when the sun has climbed over the horizon and angled itself to shine right onto his eyelids. It chases away any hope he may have had of grasping onto something solid, daylight quickly flooding in to fill the void of the fading warmth of his dreams; it slips through his fingers like a lingering embrace now pulling away far too fast to comprehend. The last of it fades into the back of his mind, a fleeting thing he’ll likely never think of again.
The pile he’s curled up in lacks your warmth — this is what he feels before he notices you are absent.
Lyney grumbles as he wakes, squinting and immediately moving to bury his face in his sleeve as the dawn light hits his pale eyes. He gives up when he realizes it is a futile fight. He shakes his head to clear it of the sleep-induced fog it is in and blinks his eyes to chase off the last of their bleariness. When the world comes into focus, you are the first thing he sees.
You are as far away from him as possible while still being tucked in the alley — pressed up against the wall, knees pulled up to your chest, head turned away from him as you gaze into the still-blurry distance. If you noticed his waking, you did not comment on it.
The night waves away like Lynette does before he takes the spotlight, sweeping across the stage of the starry sky and making way for the main act. Sunlight, daybreak. At dawn and dusk, the sun is the grand finale, he thinks, but it is expected: this is why only a select few stare at the stars. He is one of them, and you are, too.
He pushes himself up off of the ground, wobbly with the sleepiness the cold had not managed to shake.
Mid-day, the sun is the spotlight for all else; the metal buildings arch into the sky like they’re trying to grasp the light for themselves, as if their reflection of it is not enough. It is enough — he would know, as he has nearly been blinded by them far too many times trying to get a glimpse at what he really wants to see.
The frost-tipped tile snaps back under foot as he sidles up to you, tentative, his coarse coat’s fabric abrasive against the bare skin of your arms. He presses his side against yours, slotting himself there like the two of you were puzzle pieces that nearly fit; he ignores the crucial details, the reality that you do not, and the soft scent of dust that so often envelops you invites him in when he stops thinking about it.
At night, the sun recedes, and everyone cries for an encore they know will come, yet hope for anyway. They can afford extra hope. He cannot. The sun rises every day, sets every night. He relies on this — it is one of the few solid things he can grasp onto. But within that expectation, Lyney recognizes there must be some semblance of hope, too. Nothing is guaranteed. Nothing is a miracle. He cannot spend his time worrying about the extra what if. He wishes he could.
He leans his head on your shoulder.
“Good morning,” he murmurs. He sinks back into himself after; it felt like lead on his tongue. A false promise. That was your staple, not his. It felt odd slipping past his lips instead.
You don’t spare him a glance, and he knows what you are going to say. “Morning.”

so this could sort of be seen as a miniature prologue, but it’s somewhat detached from the story — like i said, an extra scene that i wrote and wanted to keep but couldn’t find a place for in the actual chapters taglist: n/a (open, send an ask)

Eric and [Y/n] smiled as they looked up at the night sky on the beach. Deciding to continue stargazing on the beach rather than end their night now. As they lay on the sandy shore with their hands at their side were mere inches from each other.
This moment reminded them of their childhood spent together. They used to lie on the beach, feeling the gentle ocean waves brushing against the shore and hitting their feet. They would gaze at the stars above while holding hands, enjoying the enchanting view of the starry sky from the shore.
As he spoke about the star constellations in the night sky, she listened intently, tracing each one with her eyes as he pointed them out. Her heart beat faster as she reached out hesitantly, her fingers inching toward his hand. Blushing, she paused for a moment before finally wrapping her pinkie around his.
"And that one is-" he stopped, when he suddenly felt her pinkie finger interlocked with his own. Their eyes met and time stood still as they gazed at each other. A moment of silence passed between them, as they continued to hold each other's gaze. Embarrassed, she let go removing her pinkie from around his. Mentally cursing herself for doing something so stupid.
'stupid y/n your so stupid!'
'he only sees you as a friend'
'why would he like y-'
Her body tensed up as he took her hand intertwining his fingers with hers. Now all the blood had rushed to her cheeks they were now a bright shade of red. Her heart was pounding against her chest as if she'd just run from the castle to the village. Breathing out slowly calming her nerves she intertwined her fingers with his, smiling sheepishly as she did so.
"T-This brings back memories.." She nervously said, slowly turning to look at him. He smiled, "It really does." He said, smiling back as the two lay there underneath the stars.
Eric continued to talk about the stars and [Y/n] slowly started to doze off not from his talking, but from the whole day of fun they had in the village. Slowly nodding off but trying to keep herself awake not wanting to seem rude, but slowly sleep overcame her. As it did she leaned her head against Eric's shoulder.

The Heart Nebula- Simon “Ghost” Riley
Tumblr media
GN!Reader, Angst, established relationship, Civilian! Reader, fluff
Part 1 is here
It's been a whole month since Simon had broken up with you. A whole month since you had given him the greatest present he could have ever asked for, a piece of the one place you two found each other in. The heart nebula had played a huge role in your relationship, it was hard to not think about it especially since you two shared the same sky and starry nights. Ever since that night where you two looked at the stars, for the last time, he kept loosing pieces of him with every step he took.
You moved out, bought the place of your dreams, a cottage on the country side. Fields and flowers surrounded you, and every night, the stars paid visits to you, mocking your loneliness. The same one Simon would be feeling too.
A day after the one month of the breakup, a stormy weather went through your part of the country, there were lots of thunder and so much rain. It was cold nights like this that you and him would have the most fun.
----
"It's raining, love."
"I know."
"You thinking the same as me, love?"
A smile on you as he held your hand, both of you heading to the street, you in some baggy clothes, and he in his typical jeans and a t-shirt. Rain pouring down on you both as he held you in his arms, the way he looked at you could tell any other fool of how in love he was...is with you. He kissed you under the rain every time he could.
At times, if you two dared to, you'd dance to whatever melody you could create in your heads. You in his arms as he swayed you both from side to side. Laughter could be heard all around you, he would whisper sweet nothings.
It was moments like this, where he was clean, no Ghost or his old self could ever be around, only him.....and you. He would smile so much, his hair dripping wet as you tried to get it off his face, but he'd shake it just to make you laugh a little. In moments like this, all the war, the scars, the torture and the shit moments he went through proved to him there was more to life.
It was the little moments, it was his little darling. It was and is the greatest moment in his life. The greatest love he'll ever have.
----
Now it's past noon, the rain still going strong as you wrapped yourself in a blanket and made some tea as you looked out the window.
----
"We'll get ill after today, Simon."
"Worth it." He leaned down to kiss your forehead, soon he went to get towels to dry you both. You prepared tea, the house you two spent so long making into a home was now cozy, the smell of tea filled the home. "Hmm, smells good, love." he nuzzles into your neck, his hands on your waist. "Learned from the best." You smiled and allowed himself to indulge in this moment.
------
Around eleven at night, you went to sleep, tucked yourself in bed and dreamed of the same old stuff, some were memories, others were confusing dreams.
By morning, the weather was still gloomy, skies grey and puddles for days. You adored this kind of mornings back then, now all you could do was hope for them to go by faster. You opened the front door, mug in hand and when you turned to where you'd sit, he was there.
His clothes still soaking wet, he had slept in your front porch all night. You walked to him, "Simon?" you lightly shook him, trying to wake him from his slumber, "hm?" he started to open his eyes. Although he squinted them due to the light, he smiled once he knew your hands were touching his shoulder.
"What are you doing here?"
"Mornin' to you too, love." his morning voice still had some chokehold on you, your heart weak to his morning self.
"What are you doing here, simon?"
"It was raining, that was our thing, so...I drove the second the water started to fall down, sat here all night, hoping you'd come out."
That was enough to make your heart flutter, he was a cold man on the battle field, but when it came to his darling, he was the softest man you could ever meet.
You motioned for him to go into your house. "S'nice place you have here, love."
"Thanks." You grabbed a towel and handed it to him, "Y'dripping wet."
"Worth it."
You chuckle and shake your head. "Reckon I'll get ill?"
"Perhaps, but it's nothing tea and a good soup can't fix." You smile, watching him dry himself up. You looked around and thought for a second. "I have some spare clothes, I think I still have-"
"my clothes? yeah, I figured, they weren't at my place, figured you wanted them." his voice soft, almost angelic like.
"I suppose I did."
"Selfish much?"
"Only when-"
"when it came to me, yeah I know. No complains."
"Stop it, thats creepy."
"No, not really, I just know the person I love." he accidentally let the last part out, he shook his head, cursing himself for saying it. Damn it, Simon, now I made things awkward.
"I'll get you the clothes, just make yourself at home." You walked into your room, looking for the clothes that belonged to him at some point. You walked back in, he was only in his undies when your eyes met his, "I don't want to get all ill." That was his lame excuse, the only thing that he could come up with at the moment.
You noticed it, the necklace you gave him when the stars and the planets decide a time away from the other was needed. Your heart flutters, you felt sad...yet happy. This whole time he carried it with him.
"S'alright, wouldn't want you to, not under my care." That sentence alone, gave him some hope. Maybe this rainy night and day was brought for a reason.
You handed him the dry and warm clothes, he changed immediately, even opting to take his undies off. "You hungry?"
"Yeah, haven't eaten since I left my place."
During breakfast, he sat next to you, like the old days. You two talked of the things you did while gone from the other. Things were getting better he and you mending what was broken by a stupid choice of his.
"So thats all he said?" you laughed.
"Yeah...not proud of what I had to do, but I did it, no regrets." he winks and you blush. The whole morning, you two sat on the couch, had a lazy day like the old times. Laughing and gasping at the stupid jokes the other would tell.
Maybe it was true, maybe if you let the person you love go, and they come back, it was meant to be. So far, you two didnt waste a second of this given time.
31 days it took for him to get the courage to even look for you, 31 goddamned days where you both felt alone, slowly slipping through the gaps of life.
And now, here you were, admiring this side of him. His laughter, how he could hold his stomach as he laughed and wiped a few tears away. And for him, it was a sight to see, the person he loved the most, so close to him, laughing, hands touching, oh the things time can do.
When you noticed he was toying with the necklace, you looked at him, "You kept it?"
He knew exactly what it was you meant, and he nodded. "It'd be a fuckin' fool if I just threw it away, love."
After some comfortable silence, he adds, "It was the only thing that made me feel closer to you, the one thing that gave me hope."
Your hands wrapped around his back, your head nuzzled in his neck. He was taken back by this, but he definitely welcomed it with open arms.
"I still have love for you, don't think I ever stopped." he confessed.
"I love you, Simon" you murmured.
"Marry me." he blurted out, which caused you to lean back, looking at him confused.
"hm?"
"Marry me, I can't take it any longer, I want to marry you."
You were dumbfounded.
"Can I marry you?" he asked
"Yes"
He kissed you, his hands cupping your face. Hands caressing his as he held your delicate face.

"How much longer are we going to go for?" Arthur's voice came from behind (Y/N), who was still a few steps in front of him despite her stopping and waiting for him to catch up at least three times.
"We're almost there!" she called back to him, briefly turning so that she could look in his direction, "you should know where we're going by now, Arthur!"
"Forgive me, love, it's been a long fucking time since we've went walking around the woods at night!" he yelled back, his words holding no anger, but rather confusion.
"We're almost there!" she repeated her previous statement, giggling a little at what he said.
The couple walked for a short while longer before coming to a stop at the edge of a small hill, where the land tapered off softly enough to create a natural seat. (Y/N) finally stopped and began laying out the blanket that she'd brought with her. She looked to Arthur when she was finished, seeing that he was looking out at the dark field in front of them with a fond smile on his face.
"Now do you remember where we are?" she asked, her hands finding her hips as she grinned over at him.
"How could I forget?" he looked over at her, the corners of his eyes crinkling slightly as his smile widened.
"Come, sit with me," she beckoned him, extending one of her hands to him as she stepped closer to the blanket they were standing on either side of. He took her hand and they sat down together, both chuckling softly as their shoulders bumped.
Silence fell around them once they were sitting comfortably, both occupied with looking up at the starry sky above them. It was beautiful out; a perfect night to represent all that they'd gone through together.
"Can you believe it's been nine years, Arthur?" (Y/N) broke the silence, glancing over at him after she finished speaking.
"I can't..." he started off with a bit of a chuckle, continuing before she could jump on him with questions, "I don't know how I managed to keep you for that long."
The second half of his statement made (Y/N) rethink her reaction to it. She pursed her lips together to try to hide her smile as she looked out at the moonlit field. "Do you remember the first night we met?" she asked then, her voice softer than it was before.
"Course," Arthur responded without a second thought. "I spent all my money on a pack of cigarettes for a lady that I knew I loved, but whose name I forgot," he began recounting the first night they'd spent together.
(Y/N) couldn't be surprised at his statement. She knew that it was nothing against her personally, and that rather it was because Arthur was terrible with names. Still, the first part of that sentence made her heart flutter. How could he have loved her if he'd just met her? "You taught me how to laugh that night; with all of your stories about your siblings and what you got into as a kid," she stated, grinning at the memory.
"And you taught me how to slow dance properly," he reminded her, chuckling softly at the memory of them sharing a haphazard dance together.
"Yeah...I couldn't have you keep stepping on my toes," (Y/N) pointed out.
"You still wouldn't let me take you home, even after all of that," he remembered how their night ended.
"I believe I told you that 'you don't stand a chance'," she backed his statement up by providing succinct details of it, turning to look at him with a grin then. "It's probably because you didn't remember my name," she teasingly added, knocking her shoulder against his as he rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, sure," Arthur shook his head while he failed at concealing his grin, snorting then as he dropped his gaze to his lap, "I didn't see you for bloody months after that...thought I'd made you disappear."
"I did kind of disappear, didn't I?" (Y/N) wondered aloud, setting her hands behind her so that she could lean back on them, stretching her legs out as well, "I set out on a dream that I didn't quite understand at that time. I thought it'd make me happy, but it only ended up making me sad and lonely..." she paused, exhaling a sigh as she recalled the brief period of time she spent in London, trying to make it as a writer, "if I'd only known what I had back in Small Heath, maybe I wouldn't have left at all. I certainly wouldn't have had to carry out all of those favors for those people I thought were my friends...helping them get further in their careers while mine stayed cemented to the ground."
Arthur sent her a sympathetic smile, knowing how tough it was for her to come back to Small Heath at first. He wouldn't tell her, but he remembered seeing her sitting alone in a corner booth at the Garrison, looking as defeated as ever as she nursed the drink in front of her. It hurt him to see her like that. At the thought, he reached back and placed his hand over hers, squeezing it softly as a silent gesture before he exhaled a slight chuckle. (Y/N) looked at him with furrowed eyebrows as she heard his laugh, wondering why he was responding like that. He shook his head slightly before looking up at the stars again. "Then I went and punched a man on his wedding night..." he started off, grimacing at the thought.
(Y/N) let out a laugh when she realized what he was thinking about, remembering that night full well. It was the night that they found each other again, having been invited to the same wedding through separate, mutual friends…she knew the groom and Arthur knew the bride. "I still can't believe that you did that," she commented, laughing about it now, but remembering very well that she was shocked at his actions when they happened. She was also the only one who was able to talk him down from whatever trip he was going on, and they’d become inseparable since.
"I'm still trying to figure out how to apologize for it," he stated, his grimace still present when he looked over at her, "but I'm happy for the fact that it brought me back to you," he added, his words making her reach over and run her hand down his cheek. He turned his head and pressed his lips to her palm, making her giggle at the tickling sensation his mustache created.
Silence shrouded them again as they shared a lingering look before looking up to the stars again. Moving out to the country - which allowed them to be closer to this spot - was the best decision they'd made. Once (Y/N) found out that this particular property was for sale, she made it her mission to make sure that they bought it. Money wasn't much of a problem for Arthur anymore, and he wanted to make sure that his wife, then fianceé, was happy. So they purchased the property and built a lovely home, and life, on it. Now neither would trade it for the world.
(Y/N) took a deep breath and let it out slowly, loving the feeling of fresh air entering her lungs. "Everything is alright..." she began, looking at Arthur again, "if only for tonight."
Neither knew what the next day held. Tommy seemed to be in the middle of his last elaborate scheme and his next, so all of the Shelby family members were enjoying the in-between time with their families. There was always that chance that tomorrow they'd get that phone call rounding everyone up back in Small Heath, but for tonight, everything was alright.
"I've forgotten what it feels like..." Arthur broke the momentary silence, his words making (Y/N) look at him, "you know, for everything to be alright for once."
"I know," (Y/N) agreed, nodding her head softly. She smiled at him then, thankful that he was the one who she was going to spend her life with. Sure it got messy at times, but she wouldn't have it any other way. "Happy nine years, Arthur," she softly said then, leaning in closer to him before continuing, "I love you," she finished her statement off in a whisper due to their close proximity.
"I love you, (Y/N)," Arthur grinned at her before he leaned in even closer, eliminating the rest of the space between them so that he could press his lips to hers in a passionate kiss.
Everything was most certainly alright...even if it was only for the night.

Belphegor lurks in the hidden depths not too far from the shoreline. His inky black tentacles are latched to a boulder beneath him so he’s not jostled too much by the blustery wind rocking the waves above him. His magic allows the ocean to be his eyes, and he recognizes the beach and human coastal town beyond. It’s a full moon tonight and everything is bathed in an ethereal glow that might look beautiful to anyone else, but to Belphegor, it’s hard to concentrate on anything but the hunger gnawing in his belly and the remnants of a nightmare flashing occasionally in his mind.
Movement above water catches his attention, and he senses the familiar thrum of a human heartbeat nearby. A solitary soul walks down the stairs leading to the beach, and he can almost hear the wisps of sand as they kick their feet lazily, taking long strides as they walk nowhere in particular. Hunting this time of night often means Belphegor comes across pairs of amorous lovers in the sand or sleepless loners who think the shallow waves will soothe their troubled minds; he’s grateful that he only has to deal with one pesky human tonight.
Belphegor briefly contemplates which song to lure the human with. Some humans respond better to certain melodies more than others which can be troublesome. He doesn’t want to deal with the nuisance of having to go onto shore and drag a comatose human off the beach and into the sea, not when lack of sleep makes him feel particularly lazy.
He starts humming a lullaby, one that he doesn’t often rely on but stirs something in his sad, angry soul. He recalls memories of shared hunts under starry nights, bright eyes that look at him in admiration as he coaxes their prey to the water’s edge, sibling banter as bloody water splashes around them. But happy memories give way to traces of nightmare still clinging to him like a second skin—
...familiar lifeless, half-lidded eyes that stare unblinking upwards towards the sky; eerily pale skin discoloured from blood loss, flayed and torn in a bid for freedom; tentacles similar to his own tangled in a discarded fishing net; his brothers’ enraged cries around him while he cradles her cold body, singing as if his magic could stir her to life once more...
Belphegor shakes his head violently to dispel the disjointed memories haunting him tonight and begins to sing again. It sounds off-key and shrill to him, but his magic will temper it for human ears. He’s bobbing underneath the water’s surface when his wavering voice fades into silence. He waits for the familiar sound of human feet dragging through the sand towards the water, their body following the waves until the current brings him his feast.
Belphegor presses his palms against his eyes, trying uselessly to alleviate the burning sensation of too much emotion longing to slip free. He realizes belatedly that something is wrong; the human on the shore hasn’t moved at all. He raises his head just above water and he glares at his prey, sitting defiantly on the beach and unaware of their impending demise.
Had he been in a better mood, Belphegor might’ve given up on tonight’s hunt and crept back to his cave deep beneath the tide. His raw, prickly emotions have left him off-centre and in an instant his mood shifts from impassive to enraged. His tentacles propel him forward and he’s almost salivating at the thought of dragging the human into the depths with him, his superior strength forcing them to drink the ocean into their lungs. He thinks he might show them his sharp teeth and rip out their throat before they lose consciousness.
Belphegor is nearly at the beach but the human makes a noise that has him flailing in the water to stop his momentum forward. Luckily, they haven’t seen him yet. He listens for another moment, and then he hears it: a soft sigh, and then an even softer voice that whispers, “what a beautiful song.”
Belphegor feels paralyzed as he watches the human rise and brush the sand off their clothes. They slowly turn and head back the way they came, taking a moment to glance over their shoulder at the sea one final time before disappearing into the darkness beyond his line of sight.
It’s a long, slow swim back to his cave and Belphegor’s empty stomach rumbles. He ignores his hunger, curling up in his favorite bed of sea moss as he recalls the human on the shore that escaped him. Why didn’t his song work? It’s never failed him so spectacularly before.
“That’s my favourite song, Belphie!” Lilith says excitedly as she watches their prey fall into a deep trance and walk through the water towards them. “Sing it again, won’t you?”
“I don’t need to, it already worked,” he complains, exaggerating his eye roll which makes her giggle.
“But it’s so beautiful! Please?”
Belphegor groans with frustration and tosses and turns, and eventually he slips into restless slumber. His beloved sister’s voice taunts him into the dream world, but when he expects to see her dead eyes staring at him, he sees the human’s face instead.
“It’s beautiful,” the stranger’s voice whispers to him. “It’s so beautiful.”
