the storybrooke side of episode 8 is one of my faves actually because of the political drama, and because I once again baffled that the US is a country that exists and functions, somehow.
what do you MEAN sheriffs get elected? what DO YOU MEAN a journalist with no training or experience in law enforcement can be a sheriff if people like him enough?

I'm really not a big fan of what if season 2 's name so:
Ep01: What if cyberpunk 2049?
Ep02: What if we can make Bucky even more sexy?
Ep03: What if Happy is the only competent ppl here?
Ep04: What if we finally know Gamora from s1 past?
Ep05: What if Capten Carter is the favorite character from the writers?
Ep06: What if Kahhori kicked Conquitador's ass?
Ep07: What if we finally all admit Odin is the only problem at Asguard once and for all?
Ep08: What if MOUSQUETAIRE HON HON HON!!??

Ok anyone who’s better at Words and Thoughts than me feel free to make my rambles coherent but like, brad in the way others perceive him is not worse in terms of morality and/or being a “good person” than many of the other high-ranking people working at mythic quest (poppy and ian specifically).
Let’s start with Ian because him and brad are quite similar characters. They both come from abusive households, put up walls to hide their emotions and truly care about mythic quest. This is important to note because Ian (and brad but i will get to this part later) often does real harm to the people around him.
For example, Poppy, in s1 ep08 when she tries to leave mythic quest, intentionally or not (this is unclear to me) Ian does make his emotional issues Poppy’s problem and ends up emotionally manipulating her multiple times.
He is also shown to be incredibly uncaring about any of the employees at mythic quest. That said he isn’t just a horrible person (and much of this behaviour is a product of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father).
At the end of s2 he learned to treat Poppy with respect but still treats many of his workers and co-workers pretty badly.
On the other hand, Brad has done very similar things. He emotionally manipulated his co-workers.
Right?
Well, the short answer is yes.
The long answer is.. kind of?
Let’s take for example s1 ep10 when they are in quarantine David asks Brad to donate money to charity and Brad refuses. Pretty straightforward dickhead move. They end up playing street fighter to settle the donation. Brad wins every time but still donates the money to charity and even triples the donation.
Still important to mention is what David had to do when he lost. Brad made David (1) shave off an eyebrow, (2) shave off an eyelash, and (3) shave his moustache.
So you might be asking why?
Why make David do this if he was planning on making the donation already?
Brad says in the show he needed to get something from it, and he did “David’s dignity”. I believe that it has to do with something different though.
And yes, on some level Brad does believe this and to some extent it may even be true, but Brad also does feel an innate desire to help people that has been forced out of him by Zack and his dad, so now brad has to frame acts of kindness as favours or transactions to prove to them (but mostly to himself) that he isn’t weak.
Another example of this is Brad getting Dana her job back and telling Rachel the he “owns her” but never doing anything about it.
The biggest example of this though, is the last episode of s2 when he goes to prison for Jo. Saying he had done it for “street cred” when it was clearly because he cared about Jo. This is so heartbreaking because Zack was the one to trick Jo into insider trading and Brad was the one to take the fall. This, in Brad’s mind make him weak (“a pussy”) and Zack strong (“a shark”) so he has to frame it as his own decision because then Zack can’t always be in control.
(Sorry if that last bit didn’t really make sense lol)
I would now like to move on to Poppy. Her and Brad are also quite similar. Both being made to feel less then by important figures in their lives (Ian and Zack), have severe control issues and like Ian, also put up walls for their emotions, albeit in different ways.
Poppy’s views on Brad have a lot to do with her sense of moral superiority. She thinks she’s better than Brad because he’s a “soulless money suck” but also because she feels like she deserves what she has, unlike how she feels about Brad.
This, however does nothing to soften the blow of her treating her coders (when she was head programmer), workers (when she was/is co-creative director), and Dana (when she was working for Poppy).
The mistreatment of these people displays her need for control (similarity to Brad) but also a manifestation of the way she has been treated (by Ian). In a cycle of abuse where everyone is treated terribly until they make it and then can treat everyone else terribly.
So, in a way it’s not Poppy’s fault.
She’s a product of the system.
But if she can recognize her own behaviour as ok or justified why isn’t the behaviour of brad also justified?
It’s because Poppy has a narrow-minded view of right/wrong and good/bad.
This leads to her believing that as long as in the end she is “right” (creative, imaginative, in control of herself and othersetc) it doesn’t matter how she got there because she is “good”, because Brad is “wrong” (focused on money, greedy in control of himself and others) which makes him “bad”.
In conclusion Ian’s lack of emotional intelligence and Poppy’s sense of moral superiority do not make either of them better (or worse) than Brad. Everyone is flawed, and comparing the morality of three different people? although similar, in different circumstances, and living different lives is pointless and arguably impossible.

The Great Space Cases Rewatch 2022, part 2:
Oh hey, I took actual notes this time!
S1 EP06 “Nowhere Man”
- “Percussive maintenance works every time.” This statement has followed me EVERYWHERE since I was 12. I see it in SO MUCH MEDIA. Heck, just today I saw an excellent example of the principle in action in an episode of freaking DINO RANCH. Thelma once again knocking it out of the park with one of her iconic lines.
- Did everyone have COVID nose in this episode? How could no one smell the glue in the fudge? Miss D. even took a huge sniff before biting into it. Glue has a smell, y’all, and it is nothing like marshmallows. Suspension of disbelief broken, lol.
S1 Ep07: “Desperately Seeking Suzee”
- Unlike in “Spung at Heart”, Suzee is actually in character in this episode. Catalina told her to go away so she SLAMMED the mental door shut, like bitch you can’t talk to me like that I’M OUT. That’s my girl.
- During the original run of the show I got it in my head that Bova was allergic to his own power. This episode is why. "We need to fuse these cables, do you think you can do that?" "Sure thing, Command-ACHOO!" It happened not once, but TWICE with the very subtle implication he sneezed like that all day.
S1 Ep08: "It's My Birthday Too (YEAH!)"
- I feel like Rosie depicting herself as a super hero in her family tree presentation is extremely telling about what actually goes on inside her head.
- "Two days ago by Uranus time, Bova had a birthday". Okay, but a year in Uranus time is about 84 Earth years. Is his species extremely long lived and slow to mature like Yoda's, or does everyone in the Space Cases universe use Earth years as a standard? Or does Uranus track birthdays using a completely different time system? Inquiring minds want to know.
- How old was Bova supposed to be anyway? He’s so tiny! So much baby-face. 12 year-old me had this HUGE crush on him and now that I’m an adult I just... can’t. There’s this huge disconnect between then and now. (Turns out I’m ace, but I’m still just a little bit attracted to adult Rahi Azizi. So at least I’m consistent.)
- Catalina should have told Harlan that when she tugs on her ear he's to just shut the hell up. 35% of this episode's conflict could have been avoided that way. And then we could have had some birthday party fluff. I feel like I've been robbed, lol.
- Apparently I COMPLETELY made up the post-conflict, pre-resolution conversation where Bova tells Radu that he's happy to share his birthday with Radu if it makes him feel he's like a part of something (just don't tell anybody he said it because it would ruin his rep). And that's weird because I remember it so vividly. IDEK, baby's first head canon?
- Thelma said found family is valid and important. Thank you muchly, my android queen. You continue to be the heart of this show.
S1 Ep09: "Tie Me Kangeroo Down, Court"
- Can I start off by saying I love the Jump Tube effects? Because I do. I do SO MUCH. "Wiggle around and make faces while we blink lights on and off to make it look like you're travelling" is just genius especially because it works. Love me some good old fashioned practical effects!
- OH YES THE TIME TRAVEL EPISODE. Buckle up, because I have THOUGHTS on this. As once was said on OUaT: "When you can see the future, there's irony everywhere." This was true of "Spung at Heart" and it's still true here.
- Obviously, Catalina had to have come back from Suzee's dimension at some point in the future of the story because there she is and they're clearly (supposed to be) quite a bit older. Also, future!Cat is hair goals.
- Catalina says it's possible to send a message back in time under the right conditions. Boy oh boy howdy did my mind grab onto this and run with it! If I ever get around to writing that fanfic, I'll let y'all know.
- The conversation between Miss D. and Goddard gets me howling every time I see it. "I'M ITCHING!" "That's not usually the kind of problem that requires a Command decision, but okay... scraaatch it." To this day, I fondly remember it every time I get a mosquito bite.
- I love unreliable narrators. Cat and Harlan's recollections of The Incident are so cringey! It’s great.
- I'm never NOT going to have a visceral reaction to Miss D. scratching off her own skin. Ick, ick, ick! Yes, I've seen far worse since. Much, much, MUCH worse. And yet it never fails to gross me out so props to the makeup department.
- Let's talk about what I like to call the "tapioca pudding effect". After the kids asking Thelma a series of questions about their situation and they're all answered with "yes, it is possible", Bova sarcastically asks if it's possible he could turn into a bowl of tapioca pudding and still got the same response. So sometimes, for example, when my mother is watching the garbage show that is Ancient Aliens, they'll ask a question that's so absurd that I'll yell "TAPIOCA PUDDING" as an answer. Of course, NOBODY ever gets this reference, especially not my mom.
("It is an exciting cosmos, isn't it?")

Their Best Tricks
“Man, where did they find so many hotties like these?“ - you keep asking enviously as you watch Queer as Folk, ‘cause most of those extras are... *in Emmett’s voice* ...dreamboats. Here are some of them from the first season - my personal favorites, but you can add yours if you want, of course.
S1 ep05 - Brian’s Italian Tutor
Tumblr media
Aawww, a man who loves kids! <3 Also, is it me or he looks a little bit like young Ben Affleck?
The name’s Noah Danby (he also played Captain Astro in ep11); he made a pretty solid career on TV since then.
S1 ep06 - Comic Book Store Guy
Tumblr media
This one reminds me of young Aidan Gillen for some reason, which is, you know...
His name is Roderick Brown and apparently he quit acting after that. But! THIS is his channel on YouTube and you can see he’s kinda proud of his work in QaF.
S1 ep08 - Hotlanta
Tumblr media
Mmm, a southern gentleman. He will eat you out, and he also cooks!
It’s G. Patrick Currie - he made a good TV career too.
S1 ep09 - Pitts9x6
Tumblr media
I know he’s not technically a trick, he’s Emmett’s secret screen name, but how could I leave out such a beauty?
His name is Steve Boyle - and he's been working steadily ever since.
S1 ep11 - Doctor Steve
Tumblr media
Isn’t he a catch? And since he’s a doctor, you know your mom would immediately approve.
Well, off-screen it’s Mark Lutz, and he appeared in such cult classics as “Friends,” “Angel” and “ER” (I guess he wasn’t playing a doctor this time though).
S1 ep16 - Paul, The Bank Teller
Tumblr media
...a.k.a The Most Adorable Man I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Gosh, this smile is to die for.
And the guy playing him, Brian McQuinn, wasn’t even an actor, he was just somebody’s friend invited on set; in fact, his first appearance in QaF was in ep06, you can see his reflection in the mirror as he asks Blake, “What’s taking you so long?” I guess he just charmed the hell out of the casting director and it got him a bigger role. But didn’t get him interested in acting, sadly...
S1 ep18 - Michael’s Quarterback
Tumblr media
Adventurous, straightforward and cute - just don’t expect him to be faithful...
His name is James Thomas, and although you can’t call his career terribly succesful he still keeps playing small roles in TV shows.
And finally -
S1 ep20 - Brent, The Love of Emmett’s Life
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, you didn’t think a love story as epic as this one could be crammed into one gif, did you?..
This is David Benjamin Tomlinson, who you could see just two weeks ago in “Star Trek: Discovery” - in fact, no, you couldn’t, because that’s how he looks there. Which is a shame, he’s gotten much hotter with age, if you ask me.
They all are Canadians, of course, ‘cause casting for minor roles was conducted in Toronto, where QaF was filmed. Doesn’t it make you want to move to Canada, girls and boys?..

shadowhunters s1 is terrble, how to make it better, one thing that deserves more attention, MY opinion & perspective
This is a LOOOOOONG post.
I only watched shadowhunters months ago and now I’m rewatching it (don’t ask me why). I shall say s1 story is just terrible. The writers ruined Clary’s character and got Jace’s motives so wrong (and that’s what made him “an ass”). The build-up of Clace is not convincing. Parabatais fought each other for superficial reasons. People’s different views towards the Clave should have served the plot better. I blame show writers 100% for these. They missed the point, and made what they cared about the most—romantic relationships, go in the wrong direction.
Upon finishing this post I find it to be Jace centric, so no tags for other characters. In case you’re reading, hope you can understand my English :p
Notice that all potential criticism here is meant to be directed at writers. You may consider quitting reading if this post makes you feel uncomfortable. But don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate any of the characters.
Hate is such a strong word for me to use. I do hate the Clave tho
I don’t want to spend too much time on Clary. I’ll just put it like this: after losing her mom, she has the right to feel shocked, scared, lost and helpless. She can sit down and cry, she can ask for others’ help. She was supposed to be traumatized, but I don’t see that. The script made her someone selfish, impulsive and thinks she knew better than anyone around her although she had become a shadowhunter only for days. Others were offering free help but she didn’t show gratitude and was always like “I have to find my mom I don’t care this I don’t care that I only care about my mom you must help me with this you have to listen to me blah blah blah.” To me it looks like an everyday style, so I can’t take her misfortune seriously. And, for so many times, I see no consistency in her emotions. One example is her kiss with Jace before she set out for Simon in ep09. She was worried about Simon, but all of a sudden she became all flirtatious and was kissing and talking about “us” with Jace. Maybe “a kiss from your lover makes you strong”, but no, I can’t see that in that scene. I just can’t.
And writers forced this Clace thing on me. No hate, I’m not interested in romantic relationships, I accept them as canons, although I don’t see why. Sometimes I can appreciate ones that are well-depicted, but unfortunately Clace isn’t a good one to me. not in s1. When I got to s03e22 for the first time however, I remember I was genuinely pissed when seeing that Clary had to lose her memory of the shadow world. I mean they love each other so much why can’t writers just let them be happy
Next it’s Jace, the Clave, Alec, etc. It’s mainly Jace, to be honest.
a common remark on Jace:
“JACE IS AN ASS. HE CHOSE CLARY OVER THE OTHERS TREAT ALEC LIKE AN LAPDOG PUT IZZY’S LIFE IN DANGER AND RUINED THE NAME OF THE LIGHTWOODS OH HE ISN’T A LIGHTWOOD AFTERALL“
The script is such a mess, but I really can’t deny that he chose Clary over anyone else and mistreated Alec. I love you buddy, but you could have done better. If only the writers had put less emphasis on his feelings for Clary, he shouldn’t have been that annoying. But all this “he put Izzy’s life in danger and ruined the name of the Lightwoods” thing is just the script being way too misleading. Will talk about these ones by one.
For s1 it’s basically the Clave, who represent the interests of the majority of shadowhunters, fought the Circle/Valentine. But on the Clave’s side, people hold different views. Alec was the type of person who played by the book and paid his unconditional loyalty to the Clave (they don’t deserve it btw) to the point that he lost his judgment. I can’t blame him since he’s the eldest son of the Lightwoods the royal family, he had to sacrifice himself for his family and the authority. Jace, on the other hand, didn’t have such a burden. He would fight the Circle, but he NEVER trusted the Clave. However, the reason why he fought the Circle seemed to be and only be his feelings for Clary. Well, he could have had better reasons.
I thought you knew it, writers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But you didn’t.
In the books I remember Jace was convinced that Michael Wayland was murdered by two circle members, this made a desire for revenge reasonable. But in the show, they put things vaguely at the beginning. Watching ep02 alone, I don’t know if /Michael died in a revolt as a circle member and Jace accepted it as some sort of sacrifice/ or /Michael died in a revolt of the Circle as an innocent shadowhunter/. It was not until ep10 did Jace say “Valentine killed you” and Michael was confirmed a circle member. So it’s neither the case, Michael was a circle member and Jace believed Valentine killed him, that’s still a good reason for revenge. But wouldn’t it be better if they made it clear from the start and let it be Jace’s primary motive, instead of telling us how he was willing to do everything for a girl he had just met? He felt for Clary, wanted to protect her, help her, fight the Circle/Valentine for her AND himself (Don’t tell me losing a dear parent is something trivial). If the writers did this, Jace’s failure to kill Valentine in ep11 would also be more understandable (I’m not going to elaborate on it). Revenge > empathy/love at first sight is a more appropriate way to address Jace’s motive. He could have been a protagonist who fights the villain + avenges the death of his father + protects the one he loves. But the writers made him an arrogant ass who was blinded by his feelings for Clary.
Also I have to mention the famous line in the books “to love is to destroy” here. In s1 it’s nowhere to be found, writers used “emotions cloud judgment” as a substitution. They brought it back in s2, which I think would have been better if they introduced it in s1. The falcon story is supposed to be a painful lesson Valentine taught Jace that shaped his worldview, Jace is supposed to be confused about love, there should have been an inner struggle. He couldn’t have fallen in love so easily, not to say being all noisy about it. s1 botched that concept.
How the writers vaguely dealt with Michael Wayland’s cause of death:
Tumblr media
Is he even talking about Michael here? I thought the revolt is the Uprising? It should be. But Michael died ten years ago, the Uprising was like, 20 years ago? or maybe he just didn’t want to talk about details? I have no idea.
How they made Clary the only reason Jace stole the Cup:
Tumblr media
I have no words.
Alec was with the Clave, Jace was not and had never been. This is mentioned, but not stressed enough. They weren’t on the same side from the start. I can’t deny that “Clary risked everything to find it”, but using it as an excuse to betray your brother is just lame. Letting Clary hand over the Cup to the Clave is still a valid request tho, since Meliorn said Clary had the Cup. But Jace didn’t really need to distract Alec with her here, he could have used “we” instead of “she”.
Despite that he did’t trust the Clave, strangely, he was somewhat loyal to the Accords. He wouldn’t let the Clave imprison Meliorn for no reason and rescued him from Alec’s hands. He never wanted to hurt downworlders, not until Imogen made him head of the institute in s2 where he blindly followed his only relative Grandmother for a short period. Notice that this had nothing to do with him stealing the Cup. I don't think these two things happening at the same time are related. He could rescue Meliorn without stealing the Cup. Talk more about Jace’s view about the Clave, will you, writers? He’d rather die than hand over the Soul Sword to them in s2, how much do you think he despises them?
The Clave themselves had the intention of break the Accords lol what kind of regime is this. They were just so useless and hypocritical. In ep08 they didn’t even care about what Valentine was doing but only believed that the institute was at risk, so they blame the Lightwoods... I just can’t bear with the fact that such a regime was still in power.
This is when the Clave decided to imprison Meliorn and shadowhunters were taking different sides:
Tumblr media
Then the Clave arrested Izzy because she had THE relationship with Meliorn, which made her the suspect. But do you remember what the Clave’s real motive was? They wanted the Cup. Arresting Izzy was extortion. Jace had no choice but hand over the Cup to the Clave. He did so.
I mean, before Jace stole the Cup, who knew the Clave would do that to Izzy? And what did Izzy thought of the situation? SHE WANTED TO PRESERVE THE ACCORDS AND SAVE MELIORN. Not relevant, but Izzy and Jace were both on scene trying to persuade Alec and Lydia. Alec was on the Clave’s side, he had no choice. But he blamed Jace for risking Izzy’s life was totally uncalled for. Just because a character is annoying doesn’t mean that whatever he does is wrong or the character who opposes him is always right. In fact, you trust or distrust someone is not something right or wrong. The writers made Alec think that Jace risked Izzy’s life to stole the Cup is the most ridiculous thing I can think of in s1. Why was everyone so blinded?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just, fuck the Clave first, then fight the Circle.
And Mr. and Mrs. Lightwood used to be members of the Circle. They betrayed the Circle prior to the Uprising so the Clave absolved them. When the Circle made a comeback, however, they were again a pain in the Clave’s ass. If anyone ever ruined the name of the Lightwoods, it starts with Robert and Maryse. The Clave was just finding excuses to trap them.
I would say different positions people take in s1 worths more attention. But writers just keep distracting viewers with the unbearable love of Clace.
Also the parabatai fight. They fought because of a girl, which doesn’t make any sense to me. I thought it was clear that they were’t on the same side and that should be the main reason, but writers kept inserting “Clary” here and there. Clary was important to Jace, but Alec didn’t seem to be in s1, that’s the problem. How can viewers like a character who treated his brother terribly while putting his heart into a girl he knew only for days? I mean who doesn’t have “selfish” moments at some point, but if you go too far it’s a problem.
Actually, I think writers had 1 moment of excellence:
Tumblr media
Yet in the fighting scene, parabatais were talking about Clary. Alec blamed Clary, and Jace wasn’t happy about it, so he pointed out that Alec used political marriage to cover his “true feelings”... really Jace? really Alec? is that what you think? You don’t have better reasons?
Their reconciliation is also rushed. AND THEY WERE STILL TALKING ABOUT CLARY FFS. For one brief moment, writers made Jace aware that he and Alec fight because they took different positions, but they never do the same to Alec. Alec always believed that Jace was simply risking everyone everything for Clary, from ep01 to ep11. All I could see is that he didn’t even know why they were fighting. They didn’t really talk things out. I don’t know how Alec just accepted Jace’s apology and everything went back to normal. What is “what I thought is right”? Writers never bother explaining it.
By far that’s all I can think of.  In conclusion,
Jace could fall in love, but love shouldn’t have been his only reason for everything. Because first impression is too important, no matter how much you reveal his dark past and make him suffer in s2s3, it will be hard for viewers to acknowledge his struggles, making it even harder for him to be a generally liked character.
some irrelevant opinions
Personally I think s1 is absolutely the worst of all 3 seasons. it focused toooo much on romance, and the main couple wasn’t that likable. I heard a LOT of viewers here on Chinese online communities said they didn’t even finish s1 because they thought shadowhunters was a badly-written Mary Sue love story lol and they only watch Malec cuts. lolololol
