The First Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards
The First Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards
The First Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards is a non-fiction book by the immensely popular Jess from Roots and Refuge Farm on social media. It is her second book but the first one from her for me. When I heard about the book, I admit I was super concerned that the book would be ghost written but promoted heavily by Jess. I received an Advanced Readers Copy from NetGalley for review and I…

"Discarded shells from restaurants and hotels are being used to restore damaged oyster ecosystems, promote biodiversity and lower pollution in the city’s bays...
Nestled in between the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong has been seen historically as an oyster hotspot. “They have been supporting our livelihood since ancient times,” says Anniqa Law Chung-kiu, a project manager at the Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Hong Kong. “Both oysters and their shells are treasures to humans.”
Over the past five decades, however, the city’s sprawling urban development, water pollution, as well as the over-harvesting and frequent seafloor dredging by the lime industry – which uses the crushed shells to make construction material – have destroyed Hong Kong’s oyster habitats and made the waters less hospitable for biodiversity.
The more oyster colonies falter, the worse the problem gets: oysters are filter feeders and purify water by gobbling up impurities. Just one Hong Kong oyster can filter up to 200 litres of water a day, more than any other known oyster species. But decades of rapid industrialisation have largely halted their water-purifying services.
The depletion of Hong Kong’s natural oyster reefs also affects the ability of local farmers to sustainably cultivate their oysters in a healthy environment, denting the reputation of the city’s 700-year oyster farming tradition, designated by Unesco as an “intangible cultural heritage”.
Inhabitants of the coast feel abandoned, says Ken Cheng Wai-kwan, the community leader of Ha Pak Nai on Hong Kong’s Deep Bay, facing the commercial city of Shenzhen in China. “This place is forgotten,” Cheng says. “Oysters have been rooted here for over 400 years. I ask the question: do we want to lose it, or not?”
A group of activists and scientists are taking up the challenge by collecting discarded oyster shells and recycling them to rebuild some of the reefs that have been destroyed and forgotten in the hope the oysters may make a comeback. They’ve selected locations around the island where data they’ve collected suggests ecosystems still have the potential to be rebooted, and there are still enough oyster larvae to recolonise and repopulate reefs. Ideally, this will have a positive effect on local biodiversity as a whole, and farming communities.
Farmers from Ha Pak Nai were among the first to hand over their discarded shells to the TNC team for recycling. Law’s team works with eight oyster farmers from Deep Bay to recycle up to 10 tonnes of shells every year [over 22,000 pounds]. They collect an average of 870kg every week [over 1,900 pounds] from 12 hotels, supermarkets, clubhouses and seafood restaurants in the city, including some of its most fashionable establishments. About 80 tonnes of shells [over 176,000 pounds] have been recycled since the project began in 2020.
Restaurants will soon be further incentivised to recycle the shells when Hong Kong introduces a new fee for waste removal – something that is routine in many countries, but only became law in Hong Kong in July and remains controversial...
Preliminary data shows some of the restored reefs have started to increase the levels of biodiversity, but more research is needed to determine to what extent they are contributing to the filtering of the water, says Law.
Scientists from the City University of Hong Kong are also looking to use oyster shells to increase biodiversity on the city’s concrete seawalls. They hope to provide tiny, wet shelter spots around the seawall in which organisms can find refuge during low tide.
“It’s a form of soft engineering, like a nature-based solution,” says Charlene Lai, a research assistant on the team."

The art of embroidery in Palestine, practices, skills, knowledge, and rituals was inscribed into UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021.
According to the Nomination file No. 01722 for inscription in 2021 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it was described as:
“The art of embroidery is widespread in all cities, villages, and camps of Palestine, and is rooted there since the Canaanite era. The Palestinian embroidery was affected by the multiplicity of places in which it originated or moved to and due to the inter-cultural process after the exodus of the Palestinians in 1948, but the style and method of embroidery remained the same. Palestinian women carried their embroidery art with them to their places of refuge in all parts of the world as a symbol of national identity and pride. In view of the development in the means of communication and outreach, embroidery has become widespread and influential in neighbouring countries, as it has taken modern patterns while retaining the known traditional form that is distinguished from the rest of the forms of embroidery in the world as it carries the story of Palestinian women and summarizes their style and their relationship to land and life.”
February is National Embroidery Month. We want to highlight this beautiful heritage of embroidery in Palestine, amid destruction of cultural and historical heritage sites in Gaza. According to an article on the Guardian on February 4th, more than 200 buildings of cultural or historical significance have been destroyed in Gaza.
Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery, “fallahi” comes from the word “fallaha” which means farm woman, because it was embroidered mostly by village women.

Bucky's village in Wakanda was a small Ethiopian Jewish farming community. Wakanda was always a refuge for Jews across the African continent, so the Jews who came upon this great nation stayed there to put down roots, safe from repeated exiles.
Shuri placed Bucky with them because she knew that the familiarity, stability, and support that would come with being surrounded by his people would, when paired with his long-term treatment plan, have the most positive impact on his physical and psychological recovery.
She was right, it's more than Bucky could have ever hoped for. Even after he returns to America, he regularly visits the people who became family back when he never thought he would be deserving of one.

Hatake Clan Lore
Tumblr media
I cannot for the life of me remember if I ever posted my Hatake lore head canon but it's been bouncing around in my brain so fuck it here we go -
WARNING: long post ahead, all of this is head canon and none of it is based on anything other than conjecture and ✨vibes✨
also not that I anticipate this but people get touchy about this stuff so - if you disagree with me so strongly that you feel the need to yell at me about it, please save your energy; I literally cannot express to you how disinterested I am in engaging with that kind of thing it's just anime you'll be ok pookie
Clan History
Before the First Shinobi War, the Hatake clan was a largely pacifist group unaffiliated with nation or creed. They started out as nomadic but eventually settled into farming & hunter/gatherer communities across the Land of Fire. Though they had no kekkei genkai develop, they did have some persistent clan traits that were easy to spot. Particularly, ancestral traits of early people would remain dominant through generations instead of recessing, such as sensitivity to smells and seasons, characteristics like coarser hair, sharper teeth, longer nails or limbs, and instincts that aligned with the native fauna. This allowed them to live in harsher conditions than the newly settling villages and clans, gave them the ability to self-sustain and develop natural affinity for the wilds of the elements, and eventually, aided in the use and presentation of various chakra natures in some of their clan members.
The Hatakes were small in number and fiercely independent of other clans and families, despite being extremely tight-knit in their own communities; they were not necessarily unwelcoming, rather, they lived very differently from the newly forming clan powers, and were not interested in the quarrels of man. However, due to their reluctance to ally and the growing strains between larger war clans and families, they didn't stand much of a chance when major conflicts began to arise.
When the first war finally began, the already sparse farming and hunting communities of the Hatake clan became widely dispersed as lands were torn up in battle or claimed by other families; they were displaced or absorbed into warring clans over time - some Hatake had already been taken in by the Senju, while some sought refuge with the Uchiha, only to face each other on the battlefield and recognize their clan members in the heat of battle - the wild hair, the piercing eyes, the way they would fight with teeth and claw and kunai over complex justu or weaponry.
By the time the first war ended, there were very few Hatake left to remain in tact as a clan. Many had died in battle, some had renounced their clan to assimilate into the powerful Senju or Uchiha, and the scarce few that remained had to make a choice - let their clan die out with them, or integrate into another.
Thus began the efforts of the Hatake to affiliate with the growing Inuzuka clan - an ally of the Senju but still independent of them, this clan had roots in the Land of Fire's villages already, and their affinity for canines and comparable clan traits and practices made for an easier approach than some of the more "domesticated" families. Even still, the reluctance of the Hatake to fully submit to the 'new world' and lose their precious way of life was enough to keep them at arm's length from the Inuzuka, their need for freedom clashing with the Inuzuka's desire to serve the new developing nations and hidden villages. As such, the remaining Hatake began to dwindle into disappearance, until there were only a handful left.
Kakashi's Family
This bit is also fully personal head canon and an idea I'd always wanted to turn into fic but could never get right; works better as a hc anyway -
By the time Sakumo and his partner, Hoeru Inuzuka, had Kakashi, the Hatake clan was gone, either fully absorbed into the Inuzuka by way of marriage or willing induction, or killed in action during the Second Shinobi War. Sakumo, along with Sakumo's elderly uncle, Kama Hatake, remained alive around the time of Kakashi's birth. Kama had sustained significant injuries during his service in the war, and had been in decline ever since, unable to recover. He never married and had no surviving family apart from Sakumo, but was extremely close to his nephew and Hoeru, particularly during her pregnancy. Hoeru herself was a fierce matriarchal member of the Inuzuka, but had deep respect for Kama and the Hatake clan's heritage - after all, despite their small size and initial reluctance to integrate, the Hatake had become a major part of the Inuzuka clan over generations, and had helped their clan to grow into a foothold in the Hidden Leaf Village.
Kama himself did his best to impart the importance of keeping their clan's memory alive in Sakumo - he would share stories and techniques passed down from his own uncles and parents, grandparents, elder clan members who had long since passed. He shared the importance of their preserved weaponry like the tanto or the kunai - highly usable, compact, and versatile for farming and hunting as well as in battle. When Hoeru was pregnant, she and Kama would spend a lot of time together, in the garden or inside reading when Kama's health began to worsen. Hoeru insisted he promise to live at least long enough to see the birth of their child, and Kama made good on this promise.
He died three days after Kakashi was born, and in his honor and out of a deep love for Sakumo, Hoeru made the choice to allow her son to keep his Hatake clan name. She and Sakumo planned to teach him the important history of their clan, and how both the Hatake and the Inuzuka had come together to help keep their wild spirit alive.
Unfortunately, Hoeru's death when Kakashi was still an infant left Sakumo heartbroken and hopeless. With his dear uncle and the love of his life both gone, being the last remaining member of his clan aside from his son brought him immense and crushing grief alongside his already significant battle with depression. Still, as the years went on, Sakumo did his best to teach his boy about their clan, and about the importance of belonging while keeping the memory of precious people alive. But the excommunication following that one fateful mission brought the final blow to his despair - and with everyone turning his back on him, with no clan, no lover, and no family, he lost the battle to his grief, leaving the only remaining Hatake clan member to be his son, Kakashi Hatake.

I dont know how it took me till you posted that most recent sole survivor art to learn you were a fallout enjoyed, it fills me with joy. Fave companion/storyline?
Of the main companions, I think my favorites are Dogmeat, Nick, and Piper, but I've probably brought Ada along more than anyone.
I really love the character of this robot, built by a band of survivors from spare parts, developing attachments and feelings. I appreciate her trying to square the conflicting input of grief and justice at the point where neither really fixes anything unless the root of that injury is repaired. Ada's friends died because the robots programming was flawed and lacked the ability to see struggling humans as viable, not because Isabel wanted them to kill. At that point, killing her would be cathartic but it punishes her for a mistake she rekt didn't intend and lowers us to the level of the other wasteland factions who perpetuate the broken exterminationist view of conflict. It lets Ada continue to grow as a living being in spite of her loss and status as a robot. It's something I love about Ada in my interpretation that I felt was lacking in my impression of Curie.
The game wants to give us a romanceable female synth who is even less experienced than we are, so porting a robot's memory into a "human" works but that's a bit cheap for my taste. I don't dislike Curie but I would've enjoyed the option to help her realize a human body wasn't strictly necessary to help people. Developing the "humanity" in a machine feels more in line with rebuilding a better world than finding ways to eliminate the anthropocentric limitations of machines in a world where they can be fully sentient.
And yes, I think you should still be able to romance Robot Curie. It seems to work for Mr. Zwicky and Miss Edna! I think that's sweet and let's be play this as a world where people realize joy is precious wherever you find it instead of queueing up Curie's emergent personality. We see plenty of other robots with fully functional autonomous identities. The ability to accept them for who they are and can become in spite of their origins is a wonderful aspect of the world for me.
In general, I like keeping folks around and trying to give them another chance to make a go of it in the Commonwealth without the Institute or the Brotherhood trying to pull the strings from above or below. I try not to kill anyone I know I don't have to unless they're going to keep trying to kill me.
I've destroyed the Prydwen and the Institute every time, but I wish there could've been opportunities to bring a few BOS characters over to my side in the process, Proctor Ingram, in particular. I also like that there are hard choices to make though, that characters you would want to join you can just have incompatible ideology and loyalty.
For the game's sake I back the minutemen and the Railroad, but ideologically, the Atom Cats are my "faction" of choice. They're good people, hacking out a place for themselves, putting their skills to less genocidal use, and trying to bring a bit of light and beauty to their little peninsula. They watch out for their friends and neighbors. They ain't so keen on exterminating anything in particular. They aren't looking to rule over anything in spite of their impressive power armor skills. My favorite outfit these days is the armored AC jacket and modded Mechanist helmet.
Far Harbor has some great missions too. The hotel murder mystery is a hoot and the settlement locations offer a lot to play with. I try to strike a live-and-let-live balance there too, preserving the synth refuge, Far Harbor, and the CoA if I can help it. I never rat them out to the BoS. The memory-retrieval mini game missions are miserable though! It glitched out on my first playthrough and I couldn't finish it before my PS4 died.
Favorite settlements are probably vault 88, the Starlite drive-in (makes a fanatic multistory apartment base), Spectacle Island, Abernathy farm, Egret Tours Marina, the lumber mill, Outpost Zimonja, Greygarden, and the lighthouse. I'm a fan of modding-off the build limits and resource cheats so I can build elaborate apartment blocks out of scaffolding, warehouse bits and vault pieces. I can't get enough of encasing ruined buildings in larger buildings like warehouses or vault atrium assets too. After a while, the settlement building becomes my favorite aspect of the game after the story and world-building.

I have important question, what do you use as fertilizer for plants? I don't really want to buy one and I read there are options, like veggie broth or tea, but I am unsure what works best. I read some use a bit of menstrual blood diluted in water, which I am tempted to try, but wonder how weird it is.
I use menstrual blood diluted in water every time! But there's not enough of that to be a consistent fertilizer, or to work for the entire garden. Here's stuff that I have tried out:
urine dilluted 1:10 with water! It has a great amount of nitrogen and trace amounts of other minerals, do not use it more than two times a month, and not on tiny plants. It's the best for green growth
fermented nettle: for this, fill a plastic container that you can close, with big nettles, and then pour water on them, all the way to the top, and close it up. Leave in hot sun to ferment for 10 days. Once it's done it will stink, and I mean, stink badly. Dillute 1:10 before watering your plants with! Don't use on peas, beans and other legumes, they do not like the nitrogen.
fermented comfrey: same as nettle, has so many good nutrients in there, has tons of calcium, will help your plants a lot!
menstrual blood diluted with water: safe for all plants, plants absolutely love blood
if you suspect your plants are lacking in some minerals you can use egg shells, or even crushed shells from the beach/river, and put them in your soil to make sure there's enough calcium in it! I didn't do a lot of this but the plant lady is always doing it
Mulch: it means putting organic material on top of the soil, this can be hay, straw, cut grass, dried leaves, pine needles, cut off tree branches, plant cuttings or leftovers, whatever has fallen off a plant or a tree is in this category. Now what will happen is these materials, exposed to the sun and elements, will start to degrade and compost themselves into your soil, and you will have fresh organic compost on top of your soil. Once your mulch degrades to compost you can add more material! Endless fertilization and fixing the soil and making sure you little worms have food to eat.
Stuff I've only heard of:
coffee grounds: apparently they're very good for soil and feeding the plants!
if you have leftovers of food in the forms of fish or bones, those are great for fertilization! There even are specific fertilizers called 'bone meal' or 'fish fertilizer' because plants really love that kind of stuff. It's better to compost them first though or add them in crushed form, they need to be reduced to the elements before plants can absorb them
Mushrooms: if you can get any fungal growth in your garden it's extremely healthy for your plants! If you're only looking for potted soil disregard this. But garden plants love having mushrooms around and if you have any mushroom growth it means your soil is super healthy
compost tea: I am sure this one is amazing because 'Roots and Refuge' farm used it to rejuvinate their soil after it's been poisoned by herbicide. I'm not sure how I would do it with my outside compost pile but the idea is to put your half-composted leftovers into water, leave it there for some hours, and strain it out, so the water has taken tons of nutrients from it, and then you water your plants with it! In general, whatever you use dissolved in water will have immediate effect because your plants will draw that water in immediately. It takes a bit to absorb stuff you put in the soil!
I guess I shouldn't leave out the 'traditional' fertilization methods, which is animal poop, just in case you have like, chicken or bunnies or something making a lot of poop, that can be used as fertilizer. Do look up what poop needs to be composted for a while first though! Some animals like cows produce poop so nitrogen-rich it would fry your plants if used immediately, it needs to sit for a year first.
Good luck to your plants, you never have to buy fertilizer because there is so much of nutrients in nature you can always get it for free, with just some basic knowledge of how to get to it :)

(Image id: a screenshot of a purple text post reading "
nelumbo-lotuses asked:
Howdy! I never got to visit the Glen much, but I wanted to know more about your kind! How do you reap the resources you have? Do you have a rancher? What does your kind typically indulge on?" end id)
@nelumbo-lotuses Hello Mason :> I'm not sure if you're the one in my world, but I'll do my best to answer. Before I last went to sleep, when the Glen was more intact, we did a fair bit of both ranching & farming. About half the Glen denizens engaged in small-scale farming of this kind, & everyone engaged in moss farming (more on this below). The chief livestock was - flips through a book - rams for milk & wool, & chickens for eggs & meat. I think some of the ranchers moved here, actually! There's one guy across the way who I keep hearing baaing noises from his window... As for what we indulge in, meat soups! Chicken, to be precise. Ram is too gamey unless you slow cook it.
Anyway, farming! I figure you'll be most interested in this subject. Sadly, I don't know everything, & my books that had the best info on this were lost in the floods. I do know the glenfolk used to farm a lot more before the Sun went away, but I couldn't tell you what plants. I think there is a seed vault somewhere - I hope it's still intact. But anyways - for as long as I can remember, farming has always been more like... small-scale gardening aided by phosphor lamps. Plants tend to grow pretty sickly unless they're the special variant we bred for low light, & even then they're still rather small. What we do grow is various nuts, root vegetables like potatoes & carrots, & of course, maize! While I love nuts, our maize was my favorite crop. We bred them to produce way more seeds than usual for both replanting & eating, & the seeds are delicious. The maize itself we made into bread! Tasty tasty seedbread :> I miss it, truth be told. They grow maize here in the Refuge, in special hydroponic bays, but the bread they make with it just isn't quite the same :< Hopefully with the Sun back & the Glen being slowly repaired, we'll be able to get some again, among other crops.
Now, I promised I'd mention moss farming, & I wouldn't dare leave it out. It's what I know most about, after all! Much like the phosphor shrimp that the Barrens bred for harvesting phosphor, the Glen bred special mosses that harvest phosphor from the soil & thrive in low-light environments. Best of all, they're bioluminescent - they glow!! Fortunately, we have another variant of moss, that mostly grows on the ground & on the outside of our structures, that we've bred for food. It's quite good, actually! A little sweet, even. Anyway, the glowing moss we harvest & store in these little terrarium lamps, so they can provide light for crops & things. It's really cool! I'm not mobile enough to return to the Glen, but I'm sure someone there could ship you a sample.
Hope that answers everything! It was nice to have a normal conversation. I'm kinda helping to solve a crisis at the moment, & this was a breath of fresh air. Would love to chat again sometime!

As winter approached, Eddy's determination to improve the cabin grew stronger. Despite a few mishaps and the occasional hammered finger, he made progress. The patched roof now provided better protection, and a flock of chickens added liveliness to the surroundings.
Eddy's ambitions extended to the land beyond the cabin. He prepared garden plots, envisioning a future of bountiful harvests. Spring held the promise of a return to his farming roots, and he eagerly nurtured the soil and tended to the seeds of hope.
In Henford, the cold air of winter began to bite. The once vibrant autumn colors faded, and the scent of wood smoke filled the air. Eddy felt a sense of urgency, gathering firewood to keep the cabin warm during the upcoming cold nights.
Tumblr media
Lost in his work, Eddy had completely overlooked the presence of Helena's vanity, left behind in a forgotten corner of his bedroom. It had been months since he last saw her, and the thought occurred to him that she might have intentionally abandoned it. Perhaps she no longer wanted it or had found a replacement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The notion of selling or dismantling the vanity briefly crossed Eddy's mind, but a wave of guilt washed over him. He couldn't bear the thought of Helena's disappointment if she were to return for her belongings. Then, a different thought emerged
" Why would she bring her vanity with her if she had only sought refuge from the rain? "
Tumblr media
Realization struck Eddy, dispelling any doubts. "There's no way that woman forgot her belongings," he muttered to himself, a hint of determination in his voice. The image of Helena's face, both surprised and delighted, filled his mind. He envisioned the joy they would both experience in reconnecting and catching up.
Tumblr media
Without hesitation, Eddy tied his shoelaces and grabbed a worn hat. Henford may be a small community, but he was certain someone would know Helena's whereabouts.
Tumblr media
(ooc: HONESTLY I LOVE LIVING OFF THE GRID but I also love lighting up my Sims homes, it is always hard when u first get started and the house is so dark even in the afternoon 😭 also Henford weather this summer & fall has been so much rain and clouds wtf it's not helping!!! )

begging you to recommend me freaky fucked up dutch lit
Ok ok ok,,, so!
I have compiled a lil list for you, here's the thing though. These luckily do have english translations and depending on if you are Dutch/speak Dutch you will probably have heard of these. You will have seen them on the reading lists during high school because although your teacher tries to find something for everything and be a bit more modern,, it’s not all that successful.
sidenote for context:
Oftentimes, Dutch lit is not really for me. this has to do with the high school thing. reading levels in the Netherlands are down, about every year there will be some boomer or other complaining them youngsters don’t read anymore. True, but I vehemently believe this is because of what we had to read in high school. Because although its great if literature is weird, I mean yay artistic expression! Not too handy dandy when trying to introduce a bunch of teens to it to just throw em in the deep end and hope they’ve read them by the end of the year. It’s kind of a IYKYK thing. (it’s a rather complicated matter and this is a very condensed version of it but if I talk about that you’ll get an essay to get my thoughts across instead of what you’ve asked me which is some recommendations.)
Another bit of context: dutch lit doesn’t really shy away from religious, sexual, and sometimes gory themes. Infidelity sometimes feels a bit like the norm. Also lot of it is very straight (incest too). That being said, dutch literature has plenty of great stuff too (kader abdoulah has some cool stuff but is a lot less weird than trad dutch lit)
Having all That out of the way: FuckyWucky dutch lit incoming!:
(I have copied the descriptions from goodreads because I have not read all of these and if I were to go as far as do so this ask would not be answered for another two years)
De avond is ongemak/The discomfort of evening by Lucas Rijneveld
(The first one that reminded me when weird dutch lit comes to pass)
“I thought about being too small for so much, but that no one told you when you were big enough ... and I asked God if he please couldn't take my brother Matthies instead of my rabbit. 'Amen.'
Jas lives with her devout farming family in the rural Netherlands. One winter's day, her older brother joins an ice skating trip; resentful at being left alone, she makes a perverse plea to God; he never returns. As grief overwhelms the farm, Jas succumbs to a vortex of increasingly disturbing fantasies, watching her family disintegrate into a darkness that threatens to derail them all.
De engelenmaker/The angelmaker by Stefan Brijs
The village of Wolfheim is a quiet little place until the geneticist Dr. Victor Hoppe returns after an absence of nearly twenty years. The doctor brings with him his infant children-three identical boys all sharing a disturbing disfigurement. He keeps them hidden away until Charlotte, the woman who is hired to care for them, begins to suspect that the triplets-and the good doctor- aren't quite what they seem. As the villagers become increasingly suspicious, the story of Dr. Hoppe's past begins to unfold, and the shocking secrets that he has been keeping are revealed. A chilling story that explores the ethical limits of science and religion, The Angel Maker is a haunting tale in the tradition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein . Brought to life by internationally bestselling author Stefan Brijs, this eerie tale promises to get under readers' skin.
Het smelt/The Melting by Lize Spit
Eva can trace the route to Pim's farm with her eyes closed, even though she has not been to Bovenmeer for many years. There she grew up among the rape fields and dairy farms. There lies also the root of all their grief.
Eva was one of three children born in her small Flemish town in 1988. Growing up alongside the boys Laurens and Pim, Eva sought refuge from her loveless family life in the company of her two friends. But with adolescence came a growing awareness of their burgeoning sexuality. Driven by their newly found desires, the children begin a game that will have serious and violent consequences for them all. Thirteen years after the summer she's tried for so long to forget, Eva is returning to her village. Everything fell apart that summer, but this time she'll be prepared. She has a large block of ice in her car boot and she's ready to settle the score...
Tirza/Tirza by Arnon Grunberg
Jorgen Hofmeester once had it all: a beautiful wife, a nice house with a garden in an upperclass neighborhood in Amsterdam, a respectable job as an editor, two lovely daughters named Ibi and Tirza, and a large amount of money in a Swiss bank account. But during the preparations for Tirza's graduation party, we come to know what he has lost. His wife has left him; Ibi is starting a bed and breakfast in France, an idea which he opposed; the director of the publishing house has fired him; and his savings accounts have vanished in the wake of 9/11.
But Hoffmeester still has Tirza, until she introduces him to her new boyfriend, Choukri - who bears a disturbing resemblance to Mohammed Atta - and they announce their plans to spend several months in Africa. A heartrending and masterful story of a man seeking redemption, Tirza marks a high point in Grunberg's still-developing oeuvre.
(also I think believe he has a thing for his daughters)
De donkere kamer van Damocles/The darkroom of Damocles by Willem Frederik Hermans
During the German occupation of Holland, tobacconist Henri Osewoudt is visited by Dorbeck. Dorbeck is Osewoudt's spitting image in reverse. Henri is blond and beardless, with a high voice; Dorbeck is dark-haired, and his voice deep.
Dorbeck gives Osewoudt a series of dangerous assignments: helping British agents and eliminating traitors. But the assassinations get out of hand...
The story of Osewoudt's fateful wanderings through a sadistic universe is thrilling. Is Osewoudt hero or villain? Or is he a psychopath, driven by delusions? It is the impossibility of ascertaining whether Osewoudt was on the "right" side or the "wrong" side - the moral issue of the Second World War in a nutshell - that makes Hermans' novel as breathtaking now as when it was written a decade after the war.
Having given these five recs, this is like the tip of the iceberg

Fennec's Confectionary ♡ General Information
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
♡ About the business: A small, relatively well hidden street corner confectionary and bakery that emanates warmth and mouth watering smells from early in the morning to late in the evening. Originally a family business rooted in Pennsylvania, Fennec’s has just recently appeared in Saintes along with the arrival of its newest owner, Piper Allegheny. Despite the change in location, Piper’s proud to say she still follows the centuries old coveted Allegheny family recipes. Boasting a wide variety of baked goods, unique candies, and specialty coffee brews prepared fresh each and every day, Fennec’s offers sugary treats that are sure to sweeten any supernatural’s senses. ♡ History: The Alleghenys were a long-standing familiar bloodline with reputations as resourceful and wise tradespeople. During the early 1700's, old Roe Allegheny was the first of his lineage to finally set down permanent roots, exchanging his caravaneer lifestyle for a small slice of land in Pennsylvania. He and his wife, a human named Edith, turned to farming as a means of income and found good profits from their work- enough so to turn their home into an inn only a stone's throw away from the nearest town. It quickly became something of a safe haven for travelers of all sorts to seek shelter, drinks, and home cooked meals at. It wasn't just the hospitality that made the Allegheny Inn so popular however. Edith had a way with baked goods that alone had customers forming lines at the inn's doors in the early mornings. Gingerbread, cream filberts, eclairs and more- Edith's recipes were the inn's secret weapon.
Roe and Edith's only son Fennec, born in the late 1700's, continued to build upon the family legacy long after his parents passed. The young familiar successfully kept the inn in steady business before his first troubles arose around 1855. The county sheriff William Magill had recently opened subtle investigations into numerous rumors of the inn being a front for supernatural beings seeking refuge in the town’s shadows. The rumors were all true of course- Fennec had started keeping tabs on any other supernaturals that frequented the area, often helping them flee into Toronto to evade bounty hunters and the likes. Despite this, it seemed Fennec was always one step ahead of the sheriff and his pesky officers.
By 1859, Fennec had consistently outsmarted sheriff Magill and his protégé shreiff Patterson, tiring the second lawman out after only his first year of duty. The newest sheriff, James Grahm, would prove to be a bit more stubborn than his peers. Grahm believed the rumors to be true, but also recognized the failures of the sheriffs before him. Knowing Fennec was a witty adversary, he turned to the freshly established Pinkerton Agency to assist him in the investigations. At that time many of the agents had already passed the sheriff's tales off as little more than ghost stories and superstitious banter, and after a month had gone by without any solid evidence being uncovered to back the town's rumors, the Pennsylvania Pinkerton operation decided to recall the town's party. Their departure left sheriff Grahm and his reputation in the dust. It was another win for Fennec and the town's supernaturals, however it would be very short lived.
In the summer of 1860, the Allegheny Inn burned to the ground in the middle of the day. Grahm and his officers investigated the "accident" and claimed it was simply an unfortunate act of God. Fennec was quick to refute the claim, arguing that Grahm surely had more to do with the incident than God did. The public dispute turned physical, and the sheriff's lackies jumped in to overpower Fennec. They brandished him a heathenous outlaw, and promptly ran him out of town.
With nothing to his name and nowhere to go, Fennec had no choice but to return to his family's old way of life. He wandered the outskirts of the Appalachians, exchanging his foraged goods and camp services with travelers. It brought in just enough money to keep him alive, but Fennec wanted more than mere survival. He started saving up, keeping portions of his meager earnings tucked away in hidden caches along his trade routes. By 1905 he'd accumulated enough money between the caches to open a small rest stop further up in northern Pennsylvania. It wasn't much, but Fennec was optimistic. In a few years time his mother's recipes would become something of a staple for locals and newcomers alike, and grow the business into the bones of a bustling new enterprise: Fennec's Confectionary. Only a handful of years later Fennec would meet a young Earth elemental named Ruth, and the pair birthed their only son Jack in 1918. Jack took to working in the town's mines while Fennec and Ruth lived out the rest of their days happily serving the confectionary until Ruth's passing in 1967. Following his mother's death, Jack left the mining industry and started working alongside his father. Fennec passed away in 1991, just a year after Jack married a female familiar named Selene.
Jack and Selene struggled to conceive a child for years until their miraculous pregnancy finally came. On October 4th, 1995, little Piper Allegheny was born. Not much is publicly known about the Allegheny family after this, though it's said Jack and Selene had some sort of falling out to the point where she decided to up and leave her husband and daughter overnight. Piper completed highschool and moved out of state briefly to study business management at the University of Virginia. After graduating she promptly took over Fennec's, and only a few months into officially owning the business Piper relocated to the new supernatural safe haven in Saintes, Louisiana.

Boston State
They bring you in Roughly without explanation A shock to the system Like hydro and electro therapy in the days of old
The farm disappeared. They needed the land to cram you in Layer upon layer Room upon room
They want you hidden Pushed aside out of the way Day in day out, static Not worth the effort officially Incurable We know, always have known How they work a symptom gets a diagnosis gets a pill a side effect gets another It's pills all the way down Until there's nothing left of you
White coats testing the mind like Farmers tilling the land With a row of brick houses on the edge of campus The keepers of the land are so close yet far away holding you at arms length
Slowly the asylum came down around us You emptied out, destined to drift, not ready pushed out as violently as they pulled you in
We are still here, twelve of us now Return and look up take refuge in the shade. If not for a tiny black and white photo history would be lost
We stand tall as witnesses. Our trunks are cannonball strong Our roots entrenched in the earth We take your stories on as our own Absorbed from our depths to the tips of our leaves Your secrets are safe with us to the end of our time

15 and 32?
15. I don’t think there’s a piece of media that has drastically altered my life. A Court of Thorns and Roses got me back into reading about a year ago. If anything, it would be the YouTube video that sparked my passion for gardening (I want to say it was the first garden tour either in 2017 or 2018 done by Roots and Refuge Farm on YouTube).
32. Is there any common I think shouldn’t exist?
(Cough cough normal people having guns)
But honestly the idea that fresh produce is a luxury is just wild to me. Everybody should have access to the food that is freshest and in season where they are without exorbitant costs.
