Alright, I don’t post much, but I have a question for some of you out there listening. I’m gardening out of my apartment & can’t use the dirt/backyard space because of lease agreement. What is y’all’s best recommendations for a raised bed/standing bed?

Buckle up, everyone, it's time for one of my horrific farm chaos stories.
So all of my fine woolen children are named off Star Wars women because how else would you run a successful agricultural business? Not by what I'm doing, mostly because I buy stupid, old, or generally problematic sheep that no one else wants because I pity them and form sentimental attachments at the speed of light.
Back in October I had the pleasure of buying 3 said useless sheep from the livestock auction: Arihnda, Fennec, and Reva.

Arihnda, pictured above. (Missing an ear, an accident that occurred prior to my purchase).

Fennec. ⬆️
So I brought the three stooges home, put them in the quarantine pen and went to bed cozy and confident in my new acquisitions. Only to be awoken in the wee morning hours by my dad telling me that the large black sheep (Arihnda) was smashing the small white sheep (Fennec) around.
It should be mentioned at this point that Fennec was blind in her right eye, and because of this endearing feature, I purchased her for a whopping 50$.
At some point during the night, Arihnda decided that she would do me the favor of removing Fennec's defunct eye. She strategically (in some insane cosmic coincidence) smushed Fennec's face into the one loose wire on the whole 35 acres and gouged out her eye.
So I arrive on the scene, around 5 am, to find Arihnda still bullying Fennec, Fennec covered in blood and a sheep eyeball impaled on the fence. At the time this led to a good, long, ugly cry, but my dark sense of humor can laugh now.
So after an upset vet call and a lot of saline and antibiotic flushes, Fennec now has a healed eye hole and treats Arihnda like her best friend, the two are literally inseparable out in the field. Idk what kind of insane blood pact is going on but whatever. Girl power I guess.
Here's Fennec's empty eye socket. (It does have a tiny piece of white left and she can swivel it and blink. I'm not a vet so idk what's going on there)

Fennec's eye that's actually all still there for reference:

And on a final note, the sale barn sold me Reva with Arihnda, claiming that Reva was her daughter, but she never nursed (and she's a little stunted now) so I definitely got lied to there.
Maybe one day I will learn to not buy low quality sheep from the auction but bidding on the underdogs gives me a hero complex so it's probably not stopping anytime soon.
I'm a full time teacher, artist, and farmer. Hope y'all have enjoyed my antics.
Have a great week 😗

I came across another great podcast for farmers, by Charlotte Smith. If you get anxiety when thinking about what to post on social media to market your farm, this will prove so helpful! The episode is all about marketing, anxiety and addiction when it comes to social media.

Today I saw grow lights at Lowes while looking for something to fix my sink and doing some dog training.
I’ve been considering the possibilities since. I’ve considered them previously, because of seasonal affect depression, but also for planting. It’s something I’ve been thinking about to start seeds earlier so I have stronger seedlings before they go into the ground. I’m mildly concerned it would be like tossing a house cat out into the wild; taking something used to the comforts of a carefully curated environment and home, and subjecting it to the elements, feels a bit cruel, doesn’t it? I’m worried they would all die.
My southernmost rose bush bloomed today. I’ve let the roses go for a while this year - I don’t know, really, how to appropriately take care of them, to be honest. But it’s November 3, and my rose bush bloomed today.
The sky was grey and the wind bit at my face, making my eyes stream. The birds didn’t sing, and the fig tree trembled at the coming cold front.
And yet, there it was: a bright pink picture of perfection, brave and vivid against the dreariness of the day, nestled in the wild limbs of the chaotic bush that is more akin to a rose tree at this point in the season.
Maybe I’ll bloom this late in the year, too.

When you’re bad at chicken math, you end up overloaded with eggs! This was springtime last year and man…. If I would have known how expensive eggs would become…..

The First Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards
The First Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards
The First Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards is a non-fiction book by the immensely popular Jess from Roots and Refuge Farm on social media. It is her second book but the first one from her for me. When I heard about the book, I admit I was super concerned that the book would be ghost written but promoted heavily by Jess. I received an Advanced Readers Copy from NetGalley for review and I…
