Oooh I actually LOVE his characterisation in p4d and p4au, probably because I think it brought out all my favourite parts of Yosuke and it really felt like Yosuke had matured a lot compared to his first appearance.

In P4A/U for example we see a lot of thoughts from other characters, and I really love that it's revealed how the others - not just Yu, but also Yukiko and Chie - rely on Yosuke a lot for emotional support, as the morale booster of the team, for direction when they don't know what to do, as the glue that keeps the group together, and it's so fantastic because it's so unlike how Yosuke sees himself. A lot of Yosuke's POV also reveals how much overthinking he does and how, despite his empathy in noticing when others are frustrated or worried, he feels like he doesn't do a very good job at cheering them up, even though when we look at their POVs we see that he did!! Both Yukiko and Chie call him up when they were worried about their friends going missing BECAUSE they feel better from talking to him!! Sorry but this particular factoid, this specific gap, sits in my head like a spitroast being rotated all the time because I cannot get over it. But he's trying though - we can see his motivations for the things that he says and how he tries to lighten the mood and yeah. It's great. I went into P4AU thinking it was going to be whatever but let me just say that was the game that triggered my single-minded obsession about Yosuke and the reason why this blog exists LOL like I was very much souyo and yosuke-brained aftert P4G but oh boy. P4AU tipped me over from obsessed to building this damn shrine for him :'D

He always laughs deprecatingly at himself even in the post p4g games, like in P4D - when he dances well he has a line that's like, "not such a disappointment after all" and it, again, really shows how he has such a poor perception of himself that he doesn't see his own good points, like the fact that he held out the second longest during their dance training, losing only to Rise, as pointed out by Yu. He's naturally talented and keeps up well with everyone elses dance style, but he doesn't really notice that either? Also a side thing I find hilarious/cute/endearing in P4D is also how Kanji exposes Yosuke's idol-loving-hours and Yosuke gets extremely embarrassed about it, because at his heart Yosuke does still like that kind of (somewhat) superficial thing, but he doesn't want people to know! It's a stark contrast to how he was earlier in P4G where he's more open about checking out girls (again, the whole "is this overcompensation" vs "is this a product of bro culture from his childhood friends" is a conversation that we can have) but it's a reflection of how that kind of talk tapers out a lot as the game progresses, and P4D was really consistent with the kind of growth that P4G gave Yosuke, instead of reducing him into that best-bro-friend stereotype, and for a game that was actually so short in narrative substance compared to P4AU, it was great. (I'm also convinced that P4D was trying to tell us Yosuke and Yu were dating but I'm not going to start on that again LOL)

And I think ultimately the reason why I feel like P4AU and P4D showcased a lot of growth for Yosuke is in his relationships with other people, because as much as Yosuke worries about how he's remained static, I think the fact that the others treat him with such respect (like when the first years and Teddie acknowledge that Yosuke is basically the team wrangler, and the difference between Yosuke at the start of P4G/in Magician compared to P4AU/D was someone who had become a lot more receptive about forming genuine relationships with other people instead of just protecting himself by surrounding himself with superficial relationships and yeah. yeah.

Episode Three: Bright Light, Shine through the Darkness

Okay, let's try this whole meta thing.

Bright Light, Shine through the Darkness was the episode where I realised I was in some deep trouble. I was aware of Trigun, but never really got around to looking into it until this ep was airing, and the two episodes before were, how can I say, everything I'd been lead to expect? Meryl is so angry and kind and Rosa so cool, and of course to look upon Vash is to adore him, precious darling boy. But I was still waiting for the hook, the reason to continue. Episode three, then: the one where the series finally begins. It's done saluting the work of the past and pivots to the story it's here to tell.

And I had no inkling it would be a story of such deliberate, implacable terror. It opens by telling you a storm is coming, but given that in minutes people are dying by land mines and remote drones, you'd think the storm was already here. Blood splashes! Meryl nearly gets her dumb ass flattened! E.G.'s motives aren't the kind receptive to Vash's forgiveness and whoo boy, for a moment you almost believe Vash will withdraw it. But Meryl turns it around (waaah she's so brave, she and Vash and Roberto made such a good team) and it seems the next challenge will be talking the elder Nebraska out of revenge, because anyone will pick up a gun when their loved ones are killed.

Then the piano rings out, right as Nebraska demands to know whose side Vash is on. It's a haunting, wistful tune and the score fell silent for quite a while first, which makes the notes even more out-of-place. The colour has been drained, everything is shrouded with smoke, and the cinematography has shrunk to mid shots and close-ups. Vash stands there in paralysed in fear for over ten seconds. You forget, in what follows, that we were given fair warning.

Nai was present in the opening scene, and Knives stated his intentions clearly enough at the end of the first episode. We saw this fuse being lit and the detonation still comes as a surprise. Not to mention Knives's influence is felt absolutely everywhere once you know to look for it – the bounty and the threats it inevitably attracts, the military police (and boy do I have thoughts on them, but it's only the final episode that'll come back), even the environment, the insects and birds. Tonis's little cage of buddies that Vash promised he would keep safe! Nothing hasn't felt Knives's fingertips - playing, pushing, manipulating.

Vash has to accept at the end of the episode that there was no longer any way he could avoid facing his brother, not if he wanted the people around him to be safe. While I don't think Knives was out to get Vash on this particular trip, I think he's just fine with Vash believing that's why he was there. Let him think it really is his presence, his “bad luck” that led to this destruction.

It's at least consolation to know Gofsef and his father are still alive at the end, though they're not in the best shape. I missed it the first time. But my God, poor Rosa. Poor Tonis. We never get that manga bit where Vash explains that if he took a life, Rem would never forgive him, but we don't really need to after that.

And when it took time out of Vash's self recriminating angst to show us Meryl also feels responsible, I sat up. She'd been so directly driving the plot so far, but I hardly dared hope for more. It was oddly reassuring.

All in all, fantastic episode, and I haven't even talked about the strongest portions. I hope everyone who worked on it is proud of themselves. I couldn't have asked for better. I'll close on what might have been my favourite moment (and by that I mean for me the most emotionally devastating): Vash crying as he flees the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, pulling blood-spattered Rosa after him.

The Hatt family entered Mr. Ramsfield's office.

"Hello Sir and Lady Hatt and hey there little guy! How is everyone doing"? Mr. Ramsfield asked.

"We're doing fine thank you, but poor Gordon here has been having some nasty boiler ache lately." Sir Topham Hatt responded.

"I'm sorry you're going through that Gordon. I'll try to get through our meet up as fast as possible so that your mommy and daddy can focus on making you feel better, okay"? Mr. Ramsfield asked.

With that, Mr. Ramsfield began his examination. He first started by asking Baby Gordon some simple questions like asking him how he was doing, did anything exciting happened during the week, and reciting the alphabet and numbers. Finally, Mr. Ramsfield had Sir Topham Hatt place Baby Gordon down on the baby engine track he set out for some play time. On the track were some toys: stuffed animals, soft blocks, toy freight, and toy passenger cars.

Gordon stood at the switches looking at the two trains. The weight of guilt crushing him as Lady Hatt asked Gordon what he would like to play with.

A bad memory flashed in Gordon's mind, one where his mentor had him locked in a dark shed for weeks after he saw Gordon returning to the sheds singing happily while hauling a heavy goods train and giving a friendly whistle to passengers waiting on the platform.

Young Gordon couldn't see a thing in the shed, he feared a monster would gobble him up or worse, he'd be forgotten in there forever. By the time his professor let him out, Gordon had lost count of how long he'd been locked up.

Before him stood his mentor, the engine was only a bit smaller than Gordon, but the way he had Gordon cowering in the corner, one would've mistaken the professor for being a Union Pacific Big Boy. The professor looked at the young express engine in disgust.

"Get out." He spoke.

"W..what"? Gordon stuttered.

"You've been bought by another railway, meaning you don't belong here anymore. Get out." The professor said bluntly.

Without another word Gordon rushed out of the sheds as soon as his crew got him up to steam.

As Gordon made his way to the big station, he passed by the smaller engines who immediately fled to hide once they saw the young big engine approaching. Gordon wheeshed sadly as he watched the small station pilot cower behind a short train of coal cars, but it wasn't just Gordon they were hiding from. From the other side of the tracks a group of three young big engines steamed up, pushing any small engine who hadn't been fast enough to move out of the bigger engines way. Gordon hoped they wouldn't notice him as he pulled into the station.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here"? Came one of the big engines.

"Looks like they finally let the big crybaby out, what a shame, we were enjoying the peace and quiet away from your obsessive sobbing." Said another.

He’s almost too nice. He’d kind of just accept that not everyone is made to be a trainer.

You’d insist on him training you. You’re not taking no for an answer, especially from someone as strong as Ingo.

Once he gives in, he would be a serious teacher, but he would explain in much more detail, hoping that you would be able to grasp something and connect dots on your own.

It’s your tendency to forget or not understand why a Pokemon is weak to another typing that scares him. For both your safety and your Pokemon. (Your Zoroark also has developed a fear of Vespiquen, the poor guy.)

If you’re going out in the wilds, he wants to make sure you have plenty of medical supplies, or he just wants to come along to assure you’re safe.

When you start to get a better grasp on types and battles, Ingo can’t help but feel excitement, cheering you on with his usual “Bravo!!!”

Emmet

Emmet is much more blunt, and frankly, rude, when it comes to your grasp on Pokemon and battles.

He wouldn’t normally care, but the fact you want to become a trainer and battle is what causes him to push you.

“You want to battle? Do you even know what stats your Pokemon have?”

When you say the only stat that matters is HP, he visibly cringes.

Emmet will test you. Do not fail his tests. He will be verrrrrry displeased. 

Okay he won’t do anything, but he will be upset. And probably tease you endlessly whenever he learns another thing you don’t get.

His way of teaching you will be personally battling you over and over. 

At first, you would send a water type out against his Galvantula. Em would remind you that you are currently at a disadvantage unless your Pokemon knows any specific moves to counter his electric bug. You didn’t.

He eventually realizes that not everyone is as gifted in Pokemon training as he and Ingo. But how do you teach someone the basics of Pokemon?

Pictures. Yeah he’s getting picture books. Type match-up charts made for children and what not. 

You were getting better. You’d remember Durant is 4x weak to fire, and react appropriately. By not sending a dark type out pleasestopsendingZoroarkoutagainstbugs.

While you might never surpass Emmet, he does find joy in being able to battle you seriously.

Yes he will endlessly remind you of your stupidity. No matter what. You aren’t living this down.

I had a sneaking suspicion that the skulk was infecting Midnight Alley but I didn’t expect them to actually consider how old this place is!! Like, what if it is a time warp and the Alley is an Ancient City (or part of one at least, kinda like building near the ruins of the old)? Ough I just love the concept of it, and the Void fog? HELL YEAH!

The Mimic scene hurt my very soul D: I can practically taste the bitterness and self-doubt Mumbo has about his relationships. That’s something all too familiar for me and it hurts seeing him go through it too :( I mean, he’s obviously unsure if he’s worthy of Scar’s love, if at all because he’s just been through so much and if he’s going to get close to someone he wants to make 100% sure that they mean what they say and stuff. Poor guy just GIVE HIM A HUG WAAAH

(You were also right, whatever mimics are, they are DEFINITELY nothing we’ve seen before, and I hope that we’re never going to see them again. That would be devastating if someone got their hands on the Mimics in warfare…)

I loved the dynamic between Mumbo and Tubbo. They work together really well, are almost on the same page, and it’s evident that Mumbo sees him as his son and Tubbo holds him in high regard. And the scene where Tubbo reassures Mumbo about his feelings just has me all mushy how dare this lamb be so mature.

I can imagine that the throuple are in for another heart-to-heart sometime soon because they really need to clear the air about some doubts. I’m not having Tubbo chew them out again (as funny as that was) because Mumbo should realize that Scar loves him very much, and Grian will not let anything bad happen, and that they will always be safe!

Also lol Grian’s probably gonna look at all the skulk down here and say “haha how’d that get there?”

I mean yeah he loves Scar and he knows Scar loves him but that self-doubt and self-blame and so much regret and uncertainty............. he needs a good ol' hug and some affirmation <3 (Spoiler alert, he will get a hug and affirmation <3)

The entire Coven is getting so good at working together and moving in tandem it's great <3 And look. I am here for "Mumbo and Grian slowly evolving into Tubbo's Other Dads" so <3 (Mind you it's not very slow, what with how protective and attached they get <3) And yes. Tubbo sees Mumbo just silently beating himself up over something he basically had no chance at overcoming back then and just <3 he has to say something. I love him <3

Haha you're right, Tubbo's not about to chew them out. This is the next lesson/challenge for this lovely throuple; opening up and confronting problems when they need to, instead of letting them sit <3
