This morning, I finished episode 6 of Once Again thinking about that Alfred Lord Tennyson quote that goes “‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all” and I wondered: is it true for Shin Jaewoo?
At 10, he had his first crush on Kang Jihoon, an adult who literally saved him, was kind and caring, who was his hero. Then, he spent 15 years (more than half his life!) crushed by the culpability of that man’s murder – murder that happened in front of him as he was being kidnapped again like holy trauma Batman!!
Now he is 25, still carrying that love, and that guilt that is clearly heavily impacting his life and twisting his sense of self (“somewhere you belong and I don’t”? How ready he is to sacrifice himself as a child to not have to live through that pain again???). And then! He gets back to Kang Jihoon, he gets to spend time with him as a fellow adult, finds out that he is also beautiful, and cute, gets to kiss him, to be hugged by him, and he falls in love again, and he is being loved in return.
But so far all the clues we’ve been given suggest there is no happy ending for them, that Jaewoo is not going to be able to change the past because everything he’s done so far is already part of what happened (he remembers his scary older self talking to him, also the killer taking his knife that looks like the one used to kill Jihoon). Tragedy is coming for them, and Jaewoo is going to lose Jihoon again isn’t he? And then what? How is he going to keep going with the renewed guilt - he couldn’t forgive his child self, how the hell is he going to forgive himself now if he isn't able to save Jihoon? - with the renewed grief? When the pain is going to be exponentially worse than it had been for the past 15 years?
Is there a point where you go through enough heartbreak that you can’t trust that loving was worth the pain? Where you can’t believe any more that even if it was ripped from you again and again, it was better than never having known love? Is there a way for Jaewoo to not reach that point by the end of his story? I sure hope so but man, that's a very thin hope...

... Jae Woo gave him the knife that killed JiHoon.
Tumblr media
He brought a knife to a fight and he lost the knife and he remembers being warned away from JiHoon and if this is a closed loop and JiHoon saves JaeWoo because he loves the adult version of him and thus dies for him to live I am going to break into a thousand tiny pieces.

Once Again
moments that made my heart break or go !!
the self-sacrifice! • both of them deciding to allow themselves to die if that's what's necessary for the other to live! • the necklace gifts fifteen years/two days later! • adult Jae-woo saying a silent goodbye to his panicking mom • their teasing sweetness on the rooftop date! • the way they smile at each other! • their tears • Ji-hoon sobbing in his room • that note! • Jae-woo's desperation when he figures out what happened • the heartbreak and panic when he realizes he's traveled back to his own time • realizing that Ji-hoon's smile looking back at child Jae-woo (which we've seen before) means he knows what's coming and choosing it anyway • Hyung-jin and the dorm manager's teary eyed goodbye • grown up Hyung-jin talking to Kang Ji's urn • Kang Ji asking Hyung Jin to deliver the note • Hyung Jin delivering the note • Jae-woo reading the note • what Ji-hoon wrote in the note • Jae-woo's reunion with his mom • Jae-woo's tearfilled promise to Jin-hoon to live a good life • his smile looking at the dorm in the final shot
(and of course whenever Hyung-jin smiled! • Hyung-jin in a suit! • Hyung-jin in athletic clothes! • laughing Hyung-jin, solemn Hyung-Jin • basically everything Hyung-jin)

crowley used the metal tool in season 1 to start time, and we learn that he's used it first to start space. to create the stars -- he still remembers how. he still remembers all of heaven's passwords: in the book crowley is described as an optimist because he has the "utter surety... that the universe would look after him". not god, but the universe. and of course he does: he helped create it and he's looking after it, too.
think about it: aziraphale had a sword, but crowley is about to face satan who wants to destroy the world, and crowley's only weapon is a tool of creation

I have so many thoughts but I at least want to address the "for the new unicorn" note. because first of all it's so incredibly gratifying for izzy to finally be accepted into a community. it was shown before that the crew cares for him in some way but it was the first time he really saw that. that he isn't useless and alone, that he still has a place on the ship. even more so the crew WANTS HIM to be on the ship. and also that they want him to embrace his disability which doesn't make them think any less of him.
but also the choice of words. because inherently it rings queer, unicorn as a symbol of queerness. and even if it may have a negative sound when you use it differently here it is extremely positive. izzy is not only accepted to the crew, he's also accepted to the queer community, to the family. the unicorn on the revenge was also the one that was leading the ship, so one can argue that they want him to take that role in their dynamic.
and you can see that he does so immediately. he puts himself together and starts helping the crew. he's still bitchy but no longer violent and cruel. he helps stede and lucius immensely because that is what he does now. he's part of the family. twat.

Title ideas for this little comic were ‘stede loves his heavily tatted wife’ or just ‘the inn just becomes a tattoo studio in 1717 AU’ idk

A trip down memory lane! Though the tower seems to have changed…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Celestial tower! Built during the direct aftermath of the Founding Unovan Civil War, it remains a cultural landmark in memory of those lost in the fire and storm.
Tumblr media
Time has dulled the scars left behind by the twin dragons. Today, the tower is primarily used as a mausoleum (the preferred method of burial are urns) and, well, a tourism site. Legend says if you climb to the top of the tower and ring the bell, you can lay your ghosts to rest. But mostly? You can ring a GIANT bell.
Tumblr media
Course, you gotta GET to that bell first.
Masterpost for more pokemon shenanigans here!

I’d give anything to hear
You say it one more time
That the universe was made
Just to be seen by my eyes

hmm. So Once Again did not in fact find a loophole out of the inevitable heartbreak. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand I love the angst of self-sacrifice. On the other, the relationship never felt real enough to me for the angst to quite land. And on the third hand, heartbreak and tragedy are sad 😥. At 19 out of 22 minutes into the final episode, I was still hoping for some additional time travel shenanigans to reunite the two.
I was confused by the very end of him walking up the hill. It seemed to imply he would travel back in time again? I'm not sure, time travel in general is confusing.
Anyway, more thoughts about the moments I loved, and about why I didn't love this show as much as I wanted to, coming soon to a dashboard near you.
