The parallel kisses, the parallel love, the way the world brought JaeWoo back to JiHoon so they could both experience a love that otherwise could not exist but also a love that cannot exist and the way the world aches with their love that is so filled to the brim that everyone sees it and everyone knows they deserve it but fate has other ideas (JaeWoo gave him the knife that kills JiHoon and the circle cannot be broken once it is started, can it?)

Some thoughts while watching Once Again

He is a 10

like he is literally 10

but he is also 25!!

nice touch with the filter. Jae Woo living in a greyish blue world but as soon as he steps into the past and meets Ji Hoon again, it’s natural kdrama filter.

Summary

Shin Jae Woo is a man who is haunted by his painful memories. He dreams of being able to somehow turn back the hands of time and change his destiny – and the destiny of Kang Ji Hoon. Back in 2007, these two young men’s paths crossed and Shin Jae Woo fell for Kang Ji Hoon – a man who he admired more than anyone else. But cruel twists of fate meant that they could not be together – and Shin Jae Won has blamed himself for what happened ever since.

Now, 15 years later, Shin Jae Woo goes back to the college dormitory where Kang Ji Hoon used to live. While he is there, he finds an intercom receiver and picks it up – and is stunned to hear Kang Ji Hoon’s voice! He realizes that he has traveled back a decade and a half in time to 2007. Kang Ji Hoon is a student again, preparing to take the bar examination. Imagine a stranger comes up to you and hugs you repeatedly, calling you Uncle despite being only two years younger than you, spending his time with you, everyone teases you about liking him, he seems to care about you and know you far, far better than he should for being a stranger and you're drawn to him despite yourself and he keeps showing up, he keeps coming to you and he's crying outside a house and he's begging you not to die and then he's telling at a child that you helped to stay away from you to keep away from you and he just kissed you this morning and then you find a picture that can't exist in his room and you realize he talks about you like he's known you forever and there are notes in his room and moments that only make sense if something impossible has happened and it doesn't help that you're fallen for him, fallen in love with him, that you love him and you don't know what to do because how do you love someone when they know so much about you and you know nothing about them?

It's the way JaeWoo has carried this crush on JiHoon in his heart for fifteen years because he died in front of him and never moved past that moment but also the way JiHoon is falling in love with him in return despite the circumstances and because he's so pained, so fragile, so hesitant and scared and yet so forward all the same time. It's the way love has happened despite their circumstances and despite their fates and despite everything that will hurt so, so much.

And then next episode looks so soft and so filled with love and I have no idea how I'm going to handle that.

Once Again is just... fascinating to me almost despite myself.

There is no way to truly give them a happy ending. Their lives don't work that way, the time travel and the life and death won't allow for that for them.

And yet they're going to love each other.

And yet they're going to be there for each other.

And yet there is something there that waits for them.

I don't even know.

There is no happy ending when the determination to save someone can outweigh your own survival instinct and when love can overpower anything.

This show already aches because the love is palpable but so is the knowledge of the future and the diverging choices, who lives and who dies, who makes it to the future of the dorms, who lives to see the sunrise so many more times?

Because even if they both live... the future is not going to hold this same love for them, the future diverges their paths by 15 years no matter what else may happen and there are so many changes that cannot be accounted for.

Oh, this show is going to hurt.

Imagine realizing your first crush at ten years old, the first time you fall in any kind of love is with a college student who saves you from being alone for a night and then he dies protecting you and you spend fifteen years regretting every moment you lived because you still love him, you love him so much it makes your heart ache and then you have a chance to go back and you see yourself, your tiny child self, having that same experience and you know the only way to save your crush, your love, is to not be saved and you have to scare yourself, scare your own childself, into running away... and doing all of this after kissing the man you fell in love with so long ago that you no longer remember life without that love or pain.
