WELCOME TO HICCUNZEL MONTH 2023!

Since it’s summer, I wanted to make this event as breezy and laid back as possible. That’s why there will only be four prompts, one per week. The main theme of this month is light - I kept the prompts as vague as I possibly could so you can interpret them as you wish. Whether you want to do something related to the beach, or camping, or a picnic, a lantern festival, magic, mermaids, bioluminescent algae, bioluminescent dragons, it’s up to you! Just mind the rules and have fun!

RULES:

Use the tag #hiccunzel 2023 so your post(s) are easy to find and reblog. You don’t have to tag this blog but I’d be happy to spread the love!

All types of fan works are welcome, including fan art, fan fiction, edits, gifs, moodboards, playlists, etc., as long as they focus on the ship and the theme.

Crossovers with other characters/fandoms are fine, as long as the work itself is primarily about Hiccunzel. Keep in mind to be respectful to other characters and ships, we’re here to spread love not hate.

Hello naughty children I’m back with another Hiccunzel meta post and this one’s even longer. (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧

I’m going to preface this by saying that this relies heavily on my personal interpretation of them and their psyches. For me these two feel like my personality split into two people so that’s the kind of behaviors and thought patterns I’m basing off of - so if it feels out of sorts with the general interpretations or your views of them, well, now you know why 😂

The thought that struck me is this: Rapunzel is Hiccup's first introduction to ✨ Moe ✨ as an applied practice.

Naturally, with him being where he’s from, he wouldn’t have grown up with it and in a modern au he’d know about it as a technical concept. But then he meets Rapunzel and it’s like:

Hiccup: says something generally sarcastic/snarky/gallows humor

Rapunzel: "Noooo don't be so mean 😣🥺🥺"

Hiccup:

Hiccup: "What tf is this what is this feeling I feel what-"

He's never met someone like her, who's so cutesy and fluffy and sunshiny (pun intended) and it makes his brain go "wtf is you?????"

It’s like how I reacted when I met one of my friends on the rotbtd discord. "Why are you so bubbly all the time where's your darkness I don't understand how you function you are not making sense to me I'm going to bite you-"

Except where with me the tale ends with abject horror as I realize I'm staring at my clone, Hiccup's is just.....bafflement, and fascination

And then comes the tsundere tactics, where he tries to repeatedly prod her to test her brain. Because logic brain dictates that if you don’t understand something then you study it, and if you grew up not being allowed to openly express yourself and your interests then this data gathering is done in round-about ways.

For Hiccup this includes starting lines of topic that he knows will get a reaction out of Rapunzel, things that she’ll most likely disagree with. Test the limits to find the limits, right? Each time this quickly devolves into arguing, debating even. And the thing is, at some point one or the other of them grows to enjoy it.

Because see, Rapunzel is smart. Not just book smart, she can think objectively, and convey clearly and concisely exactly what she's thinking when she needs to.

Once she catches on to Hiccup's way of arguing a point, she gets the hang of it and does it right back. Because even when his point is different from her, it feels like he's taking her seriously and that she's supposed to be proving something. And she's not about to just let him and his logic steamroll her out of sight!

And then suddenly Hiccup is impressed and he did not see that coming 😂

It’s like this meme I found on pinterest:

Just flip that around for ENFP Rapunzel and INTP Hiccup and you’ve got it.

Like I'm imagining it, if I ever met a golden retriever type guy my first reaction would be "wtf is that imma poke him." And then "OH NO HE'S SMART"

Worse than that is that once Rapunzel gets to know someone, she knows them. Just like that scene in her movie where she confronted Gothel, when she finally understands what someone is like she's on it no questions asked.

There's no hiding from her. She won't miss a trick. She will not hesitate. She is so much the antithesis of a tsundere that it's enough to terrify all tsunderes in a 100 mile radius. You’ve got a snarky guy who was raised not to openly show affection and a empathetic girl full of openly expressed affection and what it leads to is a comedy of errors.

If Hiccup wanted to be discrete or shy or hide his intentions, it doesn’t work because Rapunzel goes directly for the kill:

Hiccup: *sees Rapunzel is struggling*

Hiccup: *quietly gives her a help*

Rapunzel “Heart Eyes” Corona: "AWWW you are SO SWEET you are SO KIND YOU CARE SO MUCH AND YOU'RE SO NICE-"

Hiccup, who has not received a compliment in his life: "FDGBKMG NO"

Rapunzel: "I LOVE YOU"

Hiccup: "NO"

Rapunzel: "YES"

Hiccup: "S T A H P"

Even if Hiccup tries to hide behind snark, or sarcasm, or deflection, it’s already too late. Rapunzel sees through it immediately. 😂

All of Rapunzel's responses come with such empathy and openness and genuine feeling put behind them and it makes Hiccup short circuit because none of his logic prepared him for confronting how much of himself he hides from other people, growing up with it for so long that it's become a part of him.

Rapunzel's very existence opposes all that he's come to know of the community he was raised in. And yet there are so many things about her that he finds familiar in him - curiosity for the world, artistry and creativity, deep intellect and too many thoughts to process

It's just that those similarities come wrapped in an empathetic core that's unlike any other he knows. She's similar to me but she couldn't be more different. Rapunzel's a mirror image created from a different substance matter and experiences the world in a completely different way, kind of like how Toothless does, in a metaphorical way.

(And this suddenly gave me the image of like, a little Hiccup creature made of stone and covered in lichen meeting a Rapunzel who's made of wind and light, and they somehow fall in love)

It's fascinating and strange and exciting and fulfilling - getting to know Rapunzel feels almost like an adventure. And knowing her for many years is like finding a new little detail every now and then on a well read map - there always pop up things about her that surprise him no matter how long he knows her.

I was a part of @siodymph‘s Holiday Gift Exchange, and I finished my gift early but figured I’d post this now before I forgot (((which lets be fair, was probably bound to happen))).

I emailed my gift to the person assigned to me but I don’t know their tumblr so I can’t tag them here, but I had a lot of fun drawing this! Good ol’ platonic Hiccunzel :D

Its also been a while since I drew Rapunzel, but it worked out great because I’d been watching the tangled series, finally - almost done watching it, so I was pumped to draw Raps!

I saw a post from like idek how long ago that you were accepting rotbtd writing prompts - any chance that still applies?

Hiiiii idk how late this ask came in because i’m technologically inept and I don’t know how to check my inbox on mobile, but yeah! I’ll take some prompts. I can’t promise how soon they’ll be done because I’m a full time creative writing student and I teach, but I’ve been wanting to get back into the fandom again.

this a link to my prompts tag if you want some inspo, but feel free to send a specific request if you have something particular in mind. Pls know my writing has grown A LOT since the last time I wrote for the fandom (back in the hayday) lol. It’s also helpful to me if you specify what you’re looking for (such as if you want a ship, rotbtd as friends etc.)

As far as ships, I’m willing to give most things a try. Though, I don’t have muse for jelsa or hijack. It’s pretty rare i’ll ship elsa with a guy (or anyone, really) and I don’t think I could pull off writing Hiccup and Jack as a romantic pairing?

I do have a bias for jackunzel, hiccunzel, hicanna, and slight mericcup, but I don’t have any qualms about writing outside these pairs or writing without pairings.

THE STORIES

1. Which is the fic you’re most proud of?

Once Mine (what a surprise). But it is true - not so much for the chapters that are posted (although I believe they make a pretty good introduction on their own) but for where this story is heading. It’s my longest fic, and the one I have and will be writing for longer than anything else in my life.

2. Which is your least favorite?

Pff. Probably that silly drunk!Hiccup drabble I wrote for @tarched's event in the summer. Believe it or not, but that thing does have a second chapter. I just didn’t think it was worth translating.

3. If you were to recommend one to read to your mom?

Probably something that doesn’t resolve around Hiccstrid being all fluffy?

4. Which one would you consider re-writing?

The first three or four chapters of Once Mine. I believe the story is good, but those chapters are not, mostly when it comes to the language (or languages as I’m translating the fic from Polisg to English).

I don’t think I care for any of my other stories enough to come back to them, when I can just go on with the new stuff.

5. Biggest regret in a fic?

Not writing at least a few chapters of Once Mine in advance before first posting it.

I mean it. The problem concerns all of the multichaptered fics, but OM is the best example of that. Like, when I first posted it, I got pretty nice reviews, and the readers seemed to be genuinely interested. But then I had to focus on the university, or wasn’t inspired enough (add the pain of translating and it all gets 100% worse), which lead to really long, unnecessary long gaps between the updates. I’m pretty sure it made some of the readers lose interest, and honestly, I can’t even blame them.

Also, maybe if I had waited a little longer, I would’ve been more aware of all the mistakes I’d done, and fixed them on time, and thus it wouldn’t be bothering my now.

6. Biggest success with a fic?

She’s not my Soulmate.

My very first multichaptered hiccstrid story, and also the one I wrote almost in one go, so I could afford the regular updates. None of my stories has ever got so many views/favourites/followed/reviews/notes in such a short time.

And it was despite it being a Modern AU.

7. Your fic with the most notes?

You turned away.

The only rtte story I manage to post shortly after the new season, hiccstrid, an alternative ending fo Blindsided. I wrote many better stories, but I apparently those details were more important ;)

8. Your fic with the least notes?

When I posted the first chapter of You looked a Mess, a four-chapter long hiccunzel story, it got no notes at all. Literally. For half a year.

9. What do you think makes a good fic? Tips?

When you’ve got an idea, write it down. Don’t let yourself be stopped by thinking “Oh, but I’ve got so many other works to finish!”. It doesn’t matter. That’s one.

Then, if it’s a longer fic, then it’s always good to know where you’re heading - try to plan it, either on paper, a word document, or in your head - whatever works best for you. That’s two

Last but not least - don’t be afraid to throw away fragments you don’t like. Deleting your writing is often more difficult than writing itself - t’s scary to just erase 800 words you’ve just written in pain, but it may turn out that after you do it, you’ll write twice as much with less struggling. And that it will be better.

10. When’s the next update on your works?

Once Mine, which I hope to update tomorrow (yay!). I suppose It’s hard to stop worrying, my Jlaire fic is the next in line.

11. Number of followers before you started writing and after?

I. Have. No. Idea.

THE WRITER

1. Which character do you love writing for?

Side characters in general. I don’t know why, but writing them always seem so much easier and more fun? I love writing the Twins and Snotlout in Once Mine. And I enjoyed writing Toby much more than Jim and Claire in It’s hard to stop worrying. If I ever get to write a thing for other fandoms, you can bet I will write for side characters there as well.

Blinky is gonna appear in the upcoming chapters of IHTSW and I’m already freaking out about it

2. Which character do you dislike writing for?

I’m not sure I’d use the word “dislike” but writing Astrid can be a pain in the neck. Not because I don’t like her - I love her, but it is difficult to keep her in character, for me at least.

3. What’s your favorite AU to write for?

Does crossover count as an AU?

4. What’s your least favorite AU to write for?

I don’t know? I mean, I didn’t write that many AU stories in the first place.

5. What do you hope never gets requested?

Alright, this may come out as a controversy, but... a gay pairing.

With all the respect to you guys, but it is not my thing. I couldn’t write about it, and wouldn’t write about it - but it would be pretty difficult to turn someone’s request down like this.

6. What do you wish was requested more?

Crossovers. I entered this fandom as a crossover video editor, and it hurts me to see the idea of crossovers is dying.

7. Thoughts on writing Smut/POC/Curvy/MxM/FxF?

No smut coming from me. First, it’s inappropriate, second, I don’t know one damn thing about it.

As POC, I come from a very white society, so the problem (or better said, theme) isn’t something I could relate to, or could describe well.

8. Which account is your biggest inspiration in writing?

@cried2dream is the reason why I started to write in the first place.

@wilderwestqueen is totally responsible for the way I perceive and write hiccstrid (especially modern)

@frostandfairytales / @ktmbinspired is the one who makes me believe that our writing matter, and that we can go beyond the boundaries of canon

9. How long have you been a fic writer for?

Excluding my endeavours to write an original novel somewhere around 2012-2014, it’s been a bit more than two years. I posted the first chapter of OM in October 2015, and it kind of went from there.

10. Any upcoming secret works?

There are a few. Some Hiccstrid, some Jlaire... We’ll see. Fingers crossed I’l live long enough to write and publish them.

Hiccunzle- Sunrise

~~~~

"Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad!"

Rapunzel shifted awake, groggily she whispered: "Your daughter is calling you."

Hiccup humphed. "Before sunrise she's your daughter."

Frustrated that her calling wasn't working, the six-year-old pulled on her father's beard. He groaned and pushed himself up on one elbow.

"Okay-okay. I'm up, I'm up. What is it, Zephyr?"

"Griffin threw up."

Hiccup stiffened, his eyes widening.

"What?"

"After supper yesterday, Hooklout dared us to eat a worm, he said only babies wouldn't. I dided, but Griff wanted to show him so he ate three. An' dis morning he woke me up, saying he didn't feel so good when BLAM! He threwded up."

"You ate a worm!?"

"How'd it taste?"

Hiccup threw his wife a glare and she shrugged. "Only chance to find out."

"It tasted slimy and gross."

"Well, now you know not to do it again." Hiccup put his hand on her forehead. "Do you feel okay?"

"Yeah, but Griffin threwded up."

"Well, just to be safe, I'm taking you to Gothi, she'll give you something so you can throw up the worm so you won't get sick."

"No! I don't wanna! Mama! Don't make me go!"

"You're welcome to stay here with me and clean up Griffin's vomit."

Zephyr's eyes widened at the prospect. She shook her head so violently her braids whipped around.

"Okay then. How about you go fetch some water for me while your dad and I get up, okay?"

"'kay." She scampered off.

Hiccup groaned and stretched. "Always something with these kids." He mumbled. "They could've at least waited until morning."

Strange Encounter by veggie-chick221

Rapunzel found her way out of her tower all on her own (okay, Pascal is most likely with her) but is very wary of everything around her. As she explores, Hiccup is shirking his Viking duties to do some exploring of his own (at this point Toothless and Hiccup have found each other and are friends, discovering new lands and new dragons). As he's wandering he suddenly hears rustling in the bushes and stops, on guard. At first he thinks it's another dragon and calls out to it, and suddenly a beautiful young woman appears from behind some vines, holding a frying pan. She is timid and he is surprised, having never seen someone like her before. They stare at each other before Rapunzel is overcome by her curious nature and quickly approaches the young boy. Startled by her sudden movements Hiccup backs up, only to trip and fall against a boulder. Rapunzel then studies him, her frying pan at the ready just in case.

Rapunzel: “Are you a cannibal? Hmm, your teeth don't look pointy. Oh, what are you wearing? Can I see?”

Hiccup: “Umm, uh....”
