Tolkien Gen Week: July 4-10, 2022

Hello and welcome to Tolkien Gen Week!

This is a week to appreciate all of the incredible characters and relationships within Tolkien’s legendarium that fall under the broad category of “gen.” There is a great wealth of wonderful gen content in the Tolkien fandom, but those creations are not always the most visible because of the shipping-focused nature of fandom at large. This week is an effort to give them the appreciation they deserve.

Tolkien Gen Week began in 2018 and occurred again in 2020 and 2021, and we’re back for more from July 4-10, 2022!

Any content and creations are welcome as long as it is non-romantic and non-sexual! You can create edits, gifs, fanart, fanfic, fanmixes, and more! Please tag your posts with #tolkiengenweek AND @ mention this blog @tolkiengenweek​ so they can be easily found. If your submission turns into a long post, please put what you can beneath a “Keep reading” divider.

Below are some prompts for each day of the week. They are not mandatory, but they are here to inspire you. This page will lead to an explanation for each one. This year, we are expanding the number of prompts per day from one to three!

Back in March, I considered the question of canon and authority through Tolkien Fanfiction Survey data, specifically looking at three groups of participants and how they handled questions of authority in their fanfiction. What emerged was the complex ways in which different fans regard the authority of Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien, scholars, filmmakers, and fellow fans. This month, I want to drill down into how fanfiction authors regard Tolkien's authority.

As I wrote in the last article, Western culture has come to regard some people as having more authority over a creative work than others. The original creator would certainly be in this group—though not without caveats, as adaptations of books that flout the author's intentions don't generally raise much hullabaloo. This is because we have also come to see "rights"—which can be purchased—as granting the authority to change a text. People who deeply engage with and care about a text—fans, in other words—are not typically seen as having this authority. If you've ever read through a comment section that leans anti-fanfic, you'll be familiar with the arguments that liken fanfiction writers to all sorts of scoundrels and criminals.

GOD YOUR TAGS!! literally!! the privacy that is granted to legolas and gimli and that they shroud themselves in feels so significant because we only get to know what they want us to know, what theyve told the hobbits, what theyre willing to share…we dont even know just how they became friends!! it was done outside of the narrative outside the hobbit POV and its also nobody business so we wont know… and they way this is doubled down in rotk where gimli tells merry and pippin his and legolas side of the story and it is a story within a story… (forgive my ramble in your inbox…i hope your evening (?) is lovely 🥰)

one song i definitely associate with them is Once More to See You by Mitski!! Mainly because of the line: “but with everybody watching us / our every move / we do have reputations.” Legolas and Gimli are representatives of their races throughout LOTR and they Are in fact being scrutinised! people are looking at them and their actions, and the way they interact with eachother has heavy consequences, either good or bad. Then the following line: “we keep it secret / won’t let them have it” 🥹 they did keep it secret! gimli and legolas’ love is such a private thing within the story :) “come inside and be with me / alone with me” they want to be alone! they want their privacy!

another song is bloom by paper kites 🥰 “can i take you to a moment / where the fields are painted gold / and the trees are filled with memories / of the feelings never told?” reminds me of Legolas asking Gimli to go to Fangorn with him!!! :D also the bright cheery tone of the song reminds me of their dynamic 🫶
