25 Things That Surprised Me as a Brit Living in Japan
1) Shops and supermarkets change their stock regularly. One day you buy ice cream, and when you go back three days later to get some more, it’s gone and there’s no evidence they ever sold it. No “sorry this is sold out”, no empty space where it was.
2) So much single-use plastic. Cookies, cakes, fruits and vegetables etc are individually wrapped, or wrapped in packs of two. To be fair though, Japan is much better at recycling all this plastic. Which leads me nicely on to...
3) PET bottles go in one recycling bin, the plastic labels and bottle tops go in a different one. You can’t just put them in together.
4) Multipack crisps are not a thing. Or if they are, I’m yet to find them. I’m used to getting 24-bag multipacks and adding crisps to my lunchbox, taking them with me in case of sudden hungries and using them to get me by between meals. Here you only really get crisps in sharing-size bags, and there’s much less variety. (Although you can buy chocolate-coated crisps, which sound like a cardinal sin but are pretty tasty)
5) There are lots of varieties of plain yoghurt. There’s not a lot of variety of flavoured yoghurt, especially when it comes to large pots. In the UK I can get strawberry, strawberry wholegrain, raspberry, blueberry, mango & passionfruit, mango & apple, mango & vanilla, vanilla, coconut, lemon curd and so much more in 500g pots. Here I’ve found vanilla, honey and blueberry in 350g pots.
6) Even in the winter when the snowstorms came, there were many non-coniferous trees that remained green. I cannot begin to explain how jarring the sight of such vibrant greenery amongst white snow is when you’re used to winter being a sea of brown and grey.
7) Cars actually stop to let you cross the road. Even if they’re turning into a side-road or at a junction, they stop for you to cross, holding up traffic. In the UK, you would annoy a lot of drivers if you started crossing a junction they were turning into.
8) Squat toilets. They’re not just a thing; they’re a commonplace thing and almost every public toilet seems to have at least one. I’ve never seen anyone opt to use one (apparently it’s easier for pregnant women though)
9) When the emergency services are called, they really show up. My neighbour left her keys in her door, someone called the police, two of them waited for her to return home. That same neighbour accidentally used a dish that wasn’t heat-resistant in the microwave and while there was no fire, there was a bit of smoke. Three fire trucks showed up, as well as police. Not a chance anything like that would happen in the UK.
10) You’re not supposed to thank the cashier after buying something; you’re supposed to just bow and leave. I cannot do this; I am culturally conditioned to thank cashiers and find myself doing it anyway.
11) 99% of (non-sliding) doors open outwards. In the UK, the opposite is true. I assume this is because, in the event of an earthquake causing structural damage, it’s much easier to barge your way out of a door when it opens outwards. In the UK, we’re more worried about people breaking in, and so doors open inwards such that we can barricade them (or so I’m told).
12) There are differences between some fruits and vegetables here. Cucumbers are tiny green wrinkled things that look like alien fingers. Radishes are enormous white monstrosities. Spinach is rarely baby leaf. Pumpkins are green. Sweet potatoes are white inside.
13) There’s not much in the way of caramel or salted caramel, but strawberry-flavoured things (especially chocolate) is very common (as is macha flavour). Things that are caramel flavour are more like burnt toffee flavour.
14) People wear coats when it’s 25ºC outside because apparently that’s not warm for them.
15) Convenience stores have printers that you’re welcome to use any time. You have to pay, of course, but for A4 paper it’s 10 yen per black and white page or 50 yen per coloured page, which is basically nothing. You can also print out things on A3, B4 and B5 paper, as well as photographs and postcards.
16) The stairwell for blocks of flats is typically outside, and then you walk along a walkway outside to get to the door. You don’t typically go into a block of flats. The opposite is true in the UK: you have to go into the building (which is typically locked, so you have to buzz the flat of the person you’re visiting and they’ll open it electronically for you from their flat) and then go up the stairs inside.
17) Bread is not sold with the end slices. It’s also usually sold in loaves of 6-8 slices, all of which are thick-cut and much sweeter than English bread. Typically only white bread is available.
18) Vending machines crop up everywhere in the seemingly most random places. I stg if Erebor were in Japan in the years of Smaug, it would have a well-stocked and fully functioning vending machine.
19) There’s no such thing as pepsi max, although there is pepsi zero. Typically you can’t get pepsi zero from the convenience store (although you can get coke zero) and have to go to the supermarket, but it costs like half the price of coke zero if you can be bothered to make the journey.
20) There are cars/vans with megaphones that just drive around advertising things. One time one passed us by and I asked my friend what the deal was and he said “oh, it’s advertising gas”. They’re also used in election campaigns. I’m still confused by these things.
21) Exposing your bare shoulders is a no-no. Even when it’s 35ºC with 90% humidity, people wear tops with sleeves that cover their shoulders (some even wear long sleeves to stop them from getting a tan). It’s okay if you’re going out on the town, but not as everyday wear.
22) “Milk” and “butter” are flavours. Personally, I think it’s redundant to describe cream as “milk-flavoured” or cake as “butter flavoured”, but it would seem Japanese people disagree.
23) Cash is still used everywhere. I pay my bills at the convenience store in cash.
24) Prices of produce are REALLY volatile. One day you pay 88 yen for a tomato. The next day that same tomato - now slightly mankier thanks to being a day older - is 198 yen. Two days later tomatoes are 98 yen. The next week they’re 128 yen.
25) Shoes off! In the classroom, at the doctor’s, at the office etc, shoes come off at the door and you change into provided slippers. This is now so deeply ingrained in me that I feel uncomfortable when my UK friends send me pictures/videos and they’re wearing shoes inside.

as someone who has recently become very enamored w red bull i have thoughts on the flavors (ranked in order of when i had them)
og red bull - no. nope. i had it once and i sort of maybe liked it. i feel like this is the equivalent of talking yourself into thinking someone's attractive 6/10
peach and nectarine red bull - this is possibly one of the best drinks ever. i love it so much. also, weirdly, it is a drink that tastes better very slightly warm. (like, not actually warm, but like 20 minutes out of the fridge warm) it tastes like summer and ripe peaches. it tastes like the most best, crisp, ripe nectarine. it tastes like sunlight. it is incredible 10/10
blue edition (blueberry) - this is quite possibly one of the weirdest drinks ive ever had. who puts blueberry in an energy drink. who puts blueberry in any drink, as a matter of fact??? it's not bad. it's just strange. also, it is not better warm. it tastes like medicine when it's warmed up 4/10
yellow edition (tropical) - it is very strange, imo to name a flavor "tropical" but, it is good. i saw a review that said this tasted like pineapple, but i think that was just skewed by the bright yellow can. it tastes like mangoes to me, and it is quite good, despite the minion cosplay 8/10

I think these boys are wonderful, sweet mangos upon blueberries and lips that spread smoke and shared experiences. egear and sweet and knowing.
I drink peppermint tea and smile giddily when I think of how you drink the same, how you could have drank a peppermint tea already today, too. Or just the fact that I know you love this tea. This table wouldn't be big enough for us three. Yesterday, love, I went to the store and bought two fragrances- peppermint for you and citrus for you. I put the mix in a spray bottle and screwed it tight; my car smells like your' two favorite smells. And, after I sparked the lighter and nipped progress into the joint that swirled out into smoke, the mixture all blended together in the car -the dried and wrapped flowers interweaved these rich floral notes with the mist- to become one of the most beautiful smells I've ever had. The only thing was it was missing you two. It was missing how your smiles fit into my space, the sound the universe makes when you smile, and how it shifts (I can feel it). Missing the weight of your bodies close to mine- the pressure the air feels trying to contain two booming presences within this limited, quantum space. The jabs at my infatuation blooming into more, the grins at my jokes. It was missing the attention we all shared, we all brought, the way my mind becomes lessened of fog when I hear you speak; it becomes still, the pond no longer ridden with tides and smog but instead the ripples of thoughts you land. Carefully carved rocks with stained colors and patterns unlike any other rocks before, all unique, or the crisp ice cubes that you can only drink your water with. It was missing the ember sparks of flames that bud in my mind. How beautiful you look holding the pipe to your lips. It was missing the smoke that comes out of your mouth, and the coughs that escape your throat, and the bubbling laughter from you from the backseat. Missing the small motions of affection you two share. It was the perfect car, and it was missing the way your face stops when I call you cute- missing my satisfaction when I make you both flustered.
The night sky was beautiful, and the weather paired perfectly-- but it was missing You. So how could these fragments of You truly be as beautiful when I know the way your hands on mine feel underneath a sky of stars and overlooking an entire city?
Well, I'll try to make as much beauty out of the pieces I have physically left with me. I'll watch the movie we all wanted to see together. I'll take myself to the theater and save the two seats next to me. I'll take the photos with me in my wallet and brush them when I get nostalgic for your smiles at night. And I'll take care of the hat you accidentally left; and check in on the belt you dropped in my backseat. And I'll grin when I remember how that sounds without the memory. I'll see you in every fish charm I pass and every cup of coffee I drink, n' I'll fruitlessly try to not buy the pumpkin muffin-tins for you to bake with each time I see them; but oh, what can I do when I end up with a collection of spices I want to incorporate in a dish with you? I'll carry them with me while remembering the promise of a dining night and the laughter you two have. And I'll spray peppermint-citrus until you open the door next time, and maybe I can see your reaction. And maybe I'll see how worth it all really is if I can see you two in my car again.

For the ask game, do pumpkin, sugar pie, and honey! Hope you're having a good day! 😁
Ohhh love those ones!! Thanks friend!! I hope you're having a great day too 💙
Pumpkin - what’s your favourite weather and why?
Oooh I think I've got to go with sunny fall days where the weather is really crisp! Like cold enough to wear a jacket and want a cup of something hot to drink, with lots of crunchy fall leaves underfoot. (I'm also very fond of thunderstorms!)
Sugarpie - what’s your favourite sweet treat?
I have a very hard time picking just one, because I have a pretty big sweet tooth haha! Top three right now would probably be 1) butter tarts (with raisins or pecans preferably), 2) ice cream (I've got a nice blueberry right now), 3) pull and peel red licorice!
Honey - what’s your favourite hot drink?
Black tea! I'm especially fond of mango, peach, or black currant flavoured black teas. After that, probably a pumpkin spice latte, or a latte with raspberry syrup, although they're the sort of thing I don't want often because they're too rich!
Thanks for the asks friend 💙💙

This is just me being me....
Tumblr media
Soooo! Levi wants to go shopping at the local farmers market. He wants to pick up some tasty food and maybe stop by a place on the way home to grab some plants for the garden.
Which tasty stalls do you stop by and what plants will you guys grab for your garden?
Tumblr media
He's eyeing those deals.
CAT! My darling! I must apologize to you (and others) for letting things sit in my inbox.
Tumblr media
Part of me just gets distracted, or forces myself to finish my work (not often lol) before interacting. Another part literally feels like I can't do justice to things people send me.... I'll work on that.
(I have no excuse for being so late in tag games except, distractions lol)
Anyway! Let me promote myself LOL I'll take a little inspiration from the Farmers Market fic I wrote a while ago. (this is also slightly self indulgent)
I think you'd have similar tastes and your favorites of course... Am I about to go overboard?
As far as fruit, I stand by Levi liking apples (I have a fic for that too hehe), and cherries, and fresh navel oranges. He's always got an apple or orange for lunch, or snacks on a bowl of cherries when they're in season. And loving apples as well, you're known to make tasty treats like tarts or muffins or crisps, and Levi always has his share.
You can't pass up the pineapple as well, or the blueberries and strawberries in season. Your freezer is full for smoothie ingredients. (Imma make a HC about everyones favorite fruit sometime)
Moving on to veggies, you stock up for salads and quick snacks. Bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, yes! All of it! How can you pass up a 1.5 pound organic zucchini for $1? You can't!
You like winter squash as well like butternut for soups or acorn for stuffing...or both for muffins or casseroles! (I have recipes!)
Also potatoes for baking or mashing yourself. And they last forever.
Okay but the zucchini? You have to visit the cheese stall and get asiago or mozzarella to shred on the zucchini and pop it in the oven for 15 minutes. SO GOOD. Also feta for salads. Cheese is the bulk of your dairy as it's coconut or almond milk in your fridge.
The tea stall! Loose leaf, baggies, give us the usual black or green tea. Chamomile or sage tea, cinnamon and honey lemon, and fruity flavors once in a while like pomegranate or pear mango. :D
Oh and dried fruit and nuts! Levis a weirdo and likes dried beets and such. He can have those. The hazelnuts too. But you both like raw almonds and the nutty granola blend for days you have oatmeal and want a crunch. Sometimes you just use it as a cereal base and throw in the blueberries! Dried fruit like mango or papaya wind up in your bag too. And those apple slices!
We can't forget the bread! You have to watch it here more than anywhere. Rye or pumpernickel loafs, small rolls of sesame seed or garlic herb. Sometimes they're for breakfast and sometimes for lunch.
How about your honey and fresh jams and peanut/almond butters? Gotta have something to put between those sandwiches! Apricot preserves, orange marmalade, classic strawberry jam. (Jam spreads better then jelly!)
You know I don't know where you're going to put all this stuff LOL
Sometimes you also grab eggs, and look at the non food items like the crafty handmade woodwork or coasters (no more coasters!) or fresh bar soap like lavender!
BTW if anyone is waiting for me to throw meats in there, you're going to have to do it yourself haha sorry
Oh wait but maybe you splurge on pasta? There's so many varieties! Maybe you go for lemon garlic linguini, or sun dried tomato fettuccine. And pasta sauce made with organic tomatoes, garlic, onion, basil and olive oil. YUM!
And if you go early and don't eat breakfast, you'll get it there. Strawberry mango smoothies, waffles, guava or chocolate empanadas?? (You eat healthy all the time, it's okay to not once in a while!)
Maybe you get lunch to go like woodfire pizza, or veggie wraps and rice and beans. Yes, you have lots of food, but after lugging it around and putting it away who wants to cook? You need to take it easy for a minute!
As far as plants, more zucchini, you can never have enough. Tomatoes and whatever lettuce variety is your favorite, and fresh herbs like basil, rosemary and parsley.
Fruits are a little more tricky I think, but a fig plant can go indoors or outdoors, and fresh figs are a nice treat! Lemons and limes are a good option too, and you can use them for some flavored water or to keep cut apples fresh :D Maybe if there's room blueberries too, or plums. (and apples)
So, what do you think? You going to the market with Levi? What are YOU getting??

25.04.24 - Day 6
The day was intense, went into the office. Work was cheerful and quiet. Although hadn't had much sleep, so was exhausted.
After I left work I walked to the gym that's in the town I work in, as opposed to the one I live near.
Food ✨️
Breakfast: Raspberries, free cookie. (38)
Lunch: Spag bol, protein lentil cakes. (441)
Dinner: protein shake, soya milk, dipping veggies, Houmous. (675)
Snacks: 1/2 cream egg, blueberries, sweet chilli rice crackers, dried mango. (669)
Steps - 16,185 ✅️
Workout -
Jogged multiple times today, trying to push myself while not hurting myself. 30 min walk/jog/stretch. Ran to I'm blue dabbo dee for the whole song.
Then after I jogged at 5mph? For 0.5 of a mile. In 6mins 20. < this is my baseline for VERY slow improvement.
Tumblr media
Adjusted goal: 2,271 Actual eaten: 1,823 Deficit: 448.
I'm not happy with how I ate while in bed, I literally said to myself you need to eat something else. And ended up eating a half pack of the rice crisps and a whole bag of mango, not the worst binge, especially when I didn't go over my deficit. But it's bad to binge, and my stomach was upset.

Pros and Cons of Airbar Diamond Pros: The Airbar Diamond shines brightly in the realm of disposable vapes, especially when it comes to its variety and ease of use. A major draw is its extensive flavor lineup, offering everything from fruity concoctions to icy mints, which cater to a broad spectrum of preferences and can be a delightful exploration for the taste buds. The device's sleek, minimalist design not only makes it visually appealing but also highly portable, fitting unobtrusively in pockets or small bags. This makes it an ideal choice for vaping enthusiasts who value discretion and convenience. Additionally, its strong 5% nicotine content delivers a robust hit that satisfies cravings efficiently, which can be particularly appealing to former smokers looking to transition away from traditional cigarettes. Cons: The non-rechargeable nature of the device, while convenient, also means it contributes to electronic waste, which might deter environmentally conscious users. Furthermore, the limited lifespan of 500 puffs per device might not suffice for heavy users, who may find themselves frequently purchasing replacements, adding to the long-term cost and environmental impact. Another point to consider is the lack of customization; unlike refillable vapes, the Airbar Diamond doesn't allow users to adjust nicotine levels or mix flavors, which could be a downside for those who prefer a more tailored vaping experience. These factors are worth considering for anyone thinking about choosing the Airbar Diamond as their go-to vaping device. Conclusion The Airbar Diamond disposable vape offers a convenient and stylish option for those looking to enjoy a hassle-free vaping experience. Its key features include a sleek design, a robust 380mAh battery, and a capacity for 500 puffs with a fixed 5% nicotine content, all contained within a compact, non-rechargeable device. The product boasts a wide range of appealing flavors, from fruity delights to refreshing mints, catering to diverse tastes. However, its non-rechargeable nature raises environmental concerns and its limited puff count may not satisfy heavier users, potentially leading to higher costs and more waste over time. Despite these cons, the Airbar Diamond remains a popular choice for its portability, ease of use, and strong nicotine delivery, making it particularly attractive for former smokers and those seeking straightforward vaping pleasure.
