PAC ⋆ christmas with your future spouse
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
reminder that this is a general reading and messages found here may not apply to everyone. take what resonates, leave what doesn't, and don't force anything if it does not fit.
BOOK A READING WITH ME · LINKTREE · 18+ PATREON · SUGGEST A PAC TOPIC · TIPS ♡ tips and feedback are highly appreciated!
GROUP ONE
cards · seven of boons, nine of spells, the forest lord, six of boons, the faery wind, keeper of spells, the romantic fool: fall in love with yourself, and fall in love with life.
channelled songs · shame by mitski. nothing without you by tanerelle. absinthe by i don’t know how but they found me. wait for it by leslie odom jr.
hey there group one ♡ christmas with your future spouse is busy, busy, busy. i see a white christmas, so you and your future spouse may live in a snowy place or may often spend christmas in snowy places.
there are children involved in this relationship with your future spouse, though these children may also be dogs or other large pets – though, for the sake of brevity, i will only use the word children where needed. a lot of what makes christmas stressful is corralling your children around, to take pictures, to get into the car so that you're on time for different gatherings, to behave themselves at other people's houses. you may constantly have to keep an eye on them and may, thus, get very little time to just enjoy christmas as an event. though this is something that you and your future spouse are likely used to.
children aside, you and your future spouse will spend more time driving from house to house to house on christmas to make sure you spend time with enough people than doing anything else. you may host from time to time, but i get the feeling that this is rare. you’d both much prefer the busyness of visiting other people over the busyness of having people over at your home.
if anything, you likely host a small adults-only christmas eve dinner with friends. one that consists mostly of drinking, eating snacks, and gossiping.
christmas may be a difficult time of the year for you – if it is not now, it will likely be when you and your future spouse are together – and your future spouse will do everything in their power to make sure you feel safe, loved, and comfortable. this is especially true if you have a history of self harm, eating disorders, or substance abuse, with christmas triggering your urges to binge/purge/restrict or to drink along with others. for some, you may have lost family members, which makes christmas particularly lonely and painful. whatever it may be, your future spouse will be your rock to lean on.
Tumblr media
GROUP TWO
cards · ten of boons, the wisewoman, strength, six of boons, child of spells, the green mother, the duty fool: assume all duties with love in your heart.
channelled songs · two hearts and no brain by kane strang. on god by latto. lip & hip by hyuna. anti-romantic by tomorrow x together.
hey there group two ♡ the christmas period may be the only time a year you and your future spouse actually get time off and, thus, the only time a year you and your future spouse get to spend meaningful time together. you both may love your families dearly and be close to them, but that does not negate the fact that christmas is for you and your future spouse alone.
you will likely give everyone their christmas presents early, send out christmas cards, and take ten minutes on the day itself to videocall everyone and wish them a merry christmas, but that’s it.
i’m actually thinking of an older couple here. so your early christmases with your future spouse may not be worth mentioning because they’re the run of the mill christmases that everyone has. but as you got older, especially as your children got older and started building their own lives, you both realised you didn’t want to do the same old christmas thing anymore. no, you wanted to go on vacations. you wanted to go on holiday cruises. or relax in a beachside resort. or go hiking through a costa rican jungle. it doesn’t matter what, doesn’t matter where, all you and your future spouse know is that come christmas you will be AWAY.
christmas is the one time of the year that is just for you two. this is the time for you and your future spouse to relax and unwind – something which is not impossible around your family, but that is definitely not easy. because, again, this is the christmas season and all the stress that comes with that. especially as your sexual relationship with your future spouse is important to both of you and you both get excited to spend time alone, in a different environment, enjoying each other. that’s as much as i’ll say because this isn’t an 18+ reading, but you get the picture.
you and your future spouse are the kind of older in love couple that people look to as goals. you’re also the type of couple that only fall more and more in love the longer you are together. you both enjoy planning these christmas vacations, and in the weeks leading up to it i feel like your future spouse is the type to tell all their friends about the ways to plan to spoil and surprise you while you’re away together.
Tumblr media
GROUP THREE
cards · keeper of challenges, child of boon, weaver of boons, child of challenges, ten of visions, weaver of spells, the beauty fool: you are naturally beautiful.
channelled songs · love theory by taeyong. nostalgia by dawn richard. honey by mariah carey. old friend by mitski.
hey there group three ♡ you undoubtedly love your future spouse, but your relationship is… complicated. in your heart and mind, they are not your soulmate, and they are not who you wished you had married. you may be close friends with the person that you wish you had married – due to a reconciliation after years apart living and building your own lives – and your families may spend christmas or christmas eve together.
and while you’ve come to peace with it, you cannot help but yearn for what could have been. especially when you see this person with their family at christmas; something which makes you think about how in another life (maybe a better life) you are happy together with the family you share.
christmas with your future spouse is filled with nostalgia. even when i think of it, it’s soft and hazy, the way a 90s film or a lifetime movie may depict christmas.
but, also, nostalgia seems like too loose of a word – there’s nostalgia in the sense that you and your future spouse may uphold a lot of traditions from your respective childhoods and you may watch christmas movies from your childhoods like ‘home alone’ – but there’s also this feeling of holding on to the past. your future spouse and the person you wish you had married may be very similar, and this comes especially to light during the christmas season. they are kind, patient, quiet and reserved around people they do not know but not around the people they’re comfortable with, like you. they are a bit of a nerd as well, with nerdier interests. and they adore you. love touching you and holding on to you. and, at christmas, when your yearning is at its strongest, you cannot help but notice all these similarities.
they may even look similar.
when you watch them putting up the christmas tree, for a second it looks like this other person – and your heart clenches. when they wrap their arms around you from behind while you ice cookies – for a moment, it could be this other person, and your heart skips a beat.  your future spouse may have an inkling of your feelings – they notice how you look at this person over a glass of wine, how you giggle together while decorating a christmas tree, how you excitedly clap at every christmas present they give you and how you spend days finding the perfect present for them – but while at times it may hurt it does not truly bother them because, at the end of the day, you chose them. you choose them every day.
so they will just hold you a little tighter. kiss you a little more. remind you that you are completely and utterly loved by them and know that you love them in turn.
your christmases together are very christmassy. you bake together. you decorate your home together. you wrap gifts together. you dance in the kitchen together to christmas music. for those of you have children, you go above and beyond to make meaningful christmas memories for your children most of all.
Tumblr media
GROUP FOUR
cards · two of boons, the council of animals, weaver of spells, keeper of boons, strength, nine of boons, the truth fool: be honest.
channelled songs · wifey by elle teresa & lil keed. limbo (chinese version) by jun. only you by 112 & the notorious b.i.g. kiss by dara (2ne1).
hey there group four ♡ as soon as i started shuffling your cards the words ‘blended family’ immediately came to mind, so these are likely the circumstances we’re looking at here. you or your future spouse have likely been married before – in fact, both of you have been married before you found your ways to each other. because of this, every christmas is a big event as the branches of your family come together – children, stepchildren, ex-spouse’s, ex-spouse’s family, spouse’s family, your family. everyone is involved.
i at first wanted to say that this is mostly for the sake of the children involved, but i also feel as if this is a set-up that you all genuinely enjoy. for some, you may even be swingers or business partners.
for some, this may be that you are all lifelong friends, so it’s natural for you all to have such a strong relationship even after your respective first marriages ended and you each found your new spouses.
while each year the christmas party or dinner itself is hosted by a different branch of the family, this is a set-up that takes the pressure off of one single person to do all the preparations. all the cooking, all the baking, all the decorating, all the decorating. everybody chips in – happily.
there’s less focus on your future spouse themselves, likely because you are all caught up in the busyness of the day itself.
that does not mean that you and your future spouse do not spend any time together or that your future spouse is uninvolved in christmas activities. not at all. you and your future spouse – and your children, if there are children involved – will each year dress up in matching or complementary outfits.
something that your future spouse looks forward to doing each year is dressing up as santa for the kids. they put time into getting the look right and make sure to choose the right time to pop in, surprise everyone, take some pics and hand out some presents, and leave when “santa has to go back to the north pole.”

Note
I am looking lovingly at both ophelia and leslie if u wanna talk about em 👉👈 can we get some facts maybe ?
Both of them misinterpret their relationship when they meet and end up thinking the other one is something like a pet friend. Ophelia isn’t threatened at all by a regular mercenary and thinks Leslie is just a silly little guy. Leslie is actually just trying to capture her and thinks she’s like an oversized puppy that he’s responsible for corralling. They both may be a little bit misguided at first, but they’ve got the spirit fsldkjf They also both really love junk food! Ophelia, since she was on a very strict diet her whole life, loves trying new foods even if she hates the way they taste, and Leslie has the diet of a 12 year old released into the snack isle with no limits.

JERICHO
Tumblr media
Jericho is Ozzy’s familiar, a Black-Headed Python. He can be very temperamental, and even lashes out at Ozzy for his rash decision-making. While he is not particularly old considering the lifespan of a vampire’s familiar, he feels like an old man having to corral an uppity teenager. He’ll bite Ozzy for any reason, mostly to get him to behave. If he is with Ozzy, he is usually draped around him like a dramatic feather boa, though he has a nice enclosure at home. He dislikes Dirge very much and wishes she would leave him alone. However, he is fond of Zen and thinks he does a good job tempering Ozzy, provided he doesn’t become an overeager follower into whatever shenanigans his partner gets into.
QUICK FACTS
Ozzy is the older son of Ryder and Ris. Warlord!Verse Mike, AJ, and Ike are his biological grandparents, and he has a rather large family through the half-siblings of his parents. Zeke is his little brother, who he cannot stand. He has one half-sibling through Ryder with Aster.
While he is a year older than him, Zen is his best friend, and the person that knows him the most intimately. Ris has referred to him on more than one occasion as Ozzy’s most ardent disciple.
Ozzy is the first naturally born hybrid of two of the Canadian-Vampire hybrids that Mike set into motion to create super soldiers for his war. Due to his parents being Ryder and Ris respectively, he is considered higher than the rest, as well. Ris has always been a thing of hubris, as has Ryder, and they passed this on to their rather self-indulgent son.
Ris considers Ozzy a miracle, even though he knows that his parents would not think so. Ozzy’s birth was half of the reason he opted not to look for a way home, because he knew that he and Ryder were not meant to have a family.
Ozzy will absolutely sass his dad, and enjoys their banter. However, he refuses to sass his mother, and if Ris tells him to do something, he does it immediately. Ris only puts up with being sassed by Ryder, though that usually ends in things Ozzy doesn’t like to think about.
He has a hard time telling himself ‘no,’ and typically will only begin to temper himself when Zen has spoken into existence the need for it. He trusts Zen to know when he’s begun crossing lines, even if he doesn’t always enjoy having to back off of things.
While Prim sees it as a simple dislike of one another, Ozzy takes his every breath as a deep offense to his own inerrant existence. He sees them as rivals at the very least, and always seeks to show up and outdo him in anything possible. This included sniping the Student Council elections by using his vampiric powers of suggestion to secure his win the day the ballots were passed around. Zen assured him that he shouldn’t need to, and typically Ozzy would have believe him, but there are few and far between times when he doesn’t trust Zen on Prim-related matters, as the two are half-brothers.
Despite being friends with Tiff, and by extension at least aware of their brother, he has a distaste for both of their parents. His mother has never let go of the rivalry and hatred he had for Leslie for a vast majority of his life, and it has transferred down to Ozzy. He tries to keep things to himself, and for the most part just talks a big game, but has divulged to Zen that if he had the chance, he’d deliver Leslie to his mother on a silver platter. Zen believes this stems from his drive to make his parents happy that quite commonly stresses him out a great deal.
Most, if not all, of the hangout sessions he has with his friends are held at their house, or Zen’s. Ozzy isn’t ashamed of his family, though he knows that both of his parents are more theatrical and likewise hateful than most people are prepared for. It doesn’t help that his closest friend is half human, and his next closest is Leslie’s child. As such, he’s more comfortable keeping his friends far away from his parents.
Ris often treats Ozzy as though he is some kind of Messiah, and Ozzy dislikes the idea of correcting him. While he lives for the praise and the ability to do whatever the fuck he wants, whenever the fuck he wants, to whoever the fuck he wants, the pressure of being something he doesn’t really think he is gets to him. It drives him to act out more than usual from time to time, and this usually ends in worse fights with Prim.
Ozzy does not often think his actions or words through very well, and often comes from a place of emotion rather than logic. He is very reactionary and easily offended, and quick to pick fights because of this. The best hope anyone has to keep him from leaping a table and attacking is that Zen will work his magic and keep him calm.
Ozzy met Zen during recess when he was in first grade and Zen was in Kindergarten. He inadvertently made Zen cry and, while he couldn’t figure out why, felt kind of bad about it. He walked the weird little kid home after school, talking the whole time while Zen listened and hung on his every word. They’ve been best friends ever since.
Ozzy is best friends with Zen, though he’s very close with Tiff, Harley, Torm, Titus, and Gatlin. He flirts with all of his friends, at least to some degree, except for Tiff. The first and last time he did, they broke his nose and dislocated his shoulder for it. Torm is also iffy, due to his preferences. Ozzy isn’t as awful to people he cares about, though he has a bad reputation.
Ris very ardently believes a stricter, more warped version of Catholicism, and that he is a prophet of sorts. He has a god complex, but does not necessarily see himself as God. While he is not entirely sure how Ozzy is important fully, he knows that he is important, and has imparted said god complex to his son. Ozzy believes himself to be a God, however, even if his mother isn’t quite sold on the idea.
Ris has actively tortured Ozzy, both mentally and physically, and usually only stops if Ozzy gives in to him completely, or Ryder stops him. Ozzy has quite a few triggers due to this, as well as CPTSD that he refuses to acknowledge because he is not allowed to be imperfect.
Ozzy is a polytheistic solipsist, and honestly believes that he and his friends are all Gods/Goddesses. Era comes and goes from the pantheon depending on if she’s hanging out with him or Prim.
Ozzy cannot stand his brother Zeke, though Zeke has been in love with him for a while. He will fight with him, verbally or physically, whenever his short fuse runs out. Once he falls in love with Zeke, he refuses to call his brother by his name.
Ozzy is simultaneously Theophobic and Theist, and dislikes most religious iconography while also having a lot to do with it. Other people discussing it really freaks him out and he will typically try and leave the conversation.
One way that he can control things is controlling his own self harm, and his way of choice is to consume dead blood. Not enough to really kill him, but enough to make him sick.
Ozzy can take the forms of a Horned Lark and a Bombay cat.

Notes from "How to Do It Now Because It's Not Going Away: An Expert Guide to Getting Stuff Done" by Leslie Josel (all direct quotes)
managing your time effectively can help you to feel in control and increase your productivity.
You need to know how long things take you to do, how quickly time is passing and how much time you have left.
Michelle thought she had a major procrastination problem, but it turned out to be a time management issue instead.
if you want to seriously eliminate the distractions in your life and get work done faster, RescueTime is a great way to improve your time management game.
you not only need to be aware of things happening in the future, but you also need to PLAN for them.
A lack of future awareness is a huge factor that contributes to lateness with deadlines, homework and lots of other stuff. Without future awareness, it’s nearly impossible to accomplish what you need to.
Do you know what “done” looks like?
Instead of sitting down to work with no end in sight, say, “I’ll write for thirty minutes before dinner or I’ll read for forty minutes before my next class.” Being able to see a beginning, middle and end to your time will help you activate and procrastinate less.
What’s the point of finding five places [to study/do homework]? Homework is boring. And doing it in the same place all the time can get very old very quickly. Changing your environment keeps things interesting and fresh just when you start to lose focus and attention. Pick Your Places becomes a list we refer to again and again, especially knee-deep into the semester when the procrastination bug sets in.
SET a timer to work for no more than an hour. Beyond that the law of diminishing returns kicks in.
Your music can become a timekeeper.
Brain.fm Are you craving music that scientifically helps you focus when you’re working or studying? Then look no further than Brain.fm! This app uses an idea called dynamic attending theory, which suggests that certain rhythms and tone patterns can help your brain focus. Just open the app and tap on the listening mode you want, and music starts playing. Options include focus, sleep, recharge, and meditation. Focus mode is great for when you’re trying to get and stay in the zone. My students swear by it.
If you use one master binder or a few folders to corral your papers, you have to look for things in fewer places.
Research shows that the more we move, the more our brain “lays down its learning.”
[Re calling it "practice" instead of "homework"] Practice vs Study Here’s why the word practice truly makes perfect! It means to get better at something. There’s a process to follow. It’s results-oriented.There’s a beginning, a middle, and an end. Don’t discount this one. It’s huge. You all like to know where to begin, where you are in the process and when it’s going to end. When you show up for basketball practice or piano lessons, you know! And when you know, you’re more likely to get moving. It becomes a habit
Over the years, I’ve replaced words like study or review with words like create, move, or even play, which help to promote action and get you moving.
Try reading the chapter all the way through to get a feel for the material. THEN go back and highlight what you think is essential to know. And a tip within a tip? Before you put highlighter to paper, make sure you can first answer the question, “Why is this important for me to know?”
"I Don't Need to Write It Down" Planning Do you need to do it every day? Yes. Will it hurt? Yes, until you get used to it! Step 1: Just list your to-dos as they pop into your head. Don’t think too much. The point is to just clear your head and not to focus on order or priority. Step 2: Make your to-dos actionable. Group like with like.
Asking yourself “What is my priority today?” is much more effective than asking “What do I need to do today?” in terms of decision-making, sequencing and determining what is essential for you to get started on immediately.
NOW LATER EVENTUALLY Call Mom Make dentist appt Call Grandma Book trip home Yogurt (Trader Joe’s) I’m constantly adding things to each section and moving items around. Because I’m checking this every day, my eventually items are always becoming laters, and my laters become nows.
Chapter 5 "I'll Remember" Routines and Rituals planning, time management and organization all require ongoing, conscious, active brainpower. Routines, almost by definition, do not. Think of a routine as “I plan it once and I’m done.” It’s the ability to move through your tasks without thinking about what’s next.
For our purpose, a routine is something you perform in a specific period of time that can be added to your planner or calendar. A ritual is an order or procedure to be followed in working (or preparing to work) on a task or activity.
my students try to schedule their classes to begin and end at the same time every day. Not an easy task and not always in their control. If that’s impossible, we set the morning routine so that they get up at the same time every day.
Ground zero for procrastination is the time just before you actually sit down to tackle a task or to prepare your brain for deep work. If you can use that time to perform several actions that support your work and eliminate distractions, you might be able to smooth your transition into work mode and cut back on wasted time.
Organizing these zones will help you work more efficiently and stay focused, alleviate the overwhelming feeling of living in a messy environment
Scent. Don’t laugh. Many of my students swear by aromatherapy or even lighting candles to help them get their motivation mojo. And they’re on to something!
Sam felt it was easier to do a task that he detested (studying) when it was paired with something he loved (popcorn).
Offtime - Sometimes we all need a little app help to ignore all those calls, notifications and text messages that bombard us. Offtime allows you to temporarily disable all the distracting apps, messages and calls! Just set the time period for when you want to work. It blocks all interruptions on our phones and makes it impossible to open any apps. But its best feature is the option to create preset schedules. So let’s say you want to focus for two hours starting at three in the afternoon. All you do is preset the periods for the week once, and the app will turn on the focus mode every day for you.
websites such as Freedom (freedom.to) and the SelfControl app (selfcontrolapp.com) are all great options, providing a variety of ways to block your biggest time robbers.
Here’s a fun game to play. Want to see how much time you actually spend on your phone? Specifically, all your texting, social media, game playing, even shopping? Here you can choose “Last 24 Hours” or “Last 10 Days.” Pick “Last 24 Hours” and scroll a bit more. BINGO! Your usage by percentages. You can’t argue with the data! Eye-opening, I’m sure!
Research shows that if you WRITE it, you are more likely to commit to DOING it. It holds you accountable and makes it real. Separate the setup from the task. If you make setting up for the task a task of its own and only focus on getting that done, it will make getting started easier.
Questions to Overcome Procrastination Pushback: What do I need to do to get ready? What is the first step? What does “done” look like?

'But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die (Gen 2:17).
High in the sky on August 9, 1945, two B29s circled above the southern part of Japan. One of them was getting ready to drop a plutonium bomb dubbed “the Fat Man.” But it had developed a malfunction with its fuel pump, so after cloud cover made the military target of Kokura impossible, it was becoming urgent to shed its payload. This is how the second nuclear weapon ever used was detonated right over the heart of the most Catholic area of Japan, Urakami, significantly north of Nagasaki city and the Mitsubishi plant that was meant to be targeted. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, painstakingly built by descendants of the persecuted Christians at the end of the nineteenth century on the very site where their forebears had been interrogated, was destroyed. The spiritual heirs to the twenty-six sixteenth-century martyrs of Nagasaki, along with their non-Christian compatriots, were vaporized, scorched, left homeless.
In Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Oppenheimer, someone states that the first bomb must be dropped in order to show the enemy what America was capable of. But the second bomb would demonstrate the will to keep dropping them, if necessary. For a Catholic, the question nags: where does Just War Theory get to raise its hand in all this? The nobler motives of the scientists working on the Manhattan Project had to do with ending war, not perpetuating it. “Is it big enough?” Niels Bohr asks the director of the project, Robert Oppenheimer. Meaning: will it make a sufficient impression to end the war, once and for all?
From its first reference to Prometheus, punished by the gods for stealing fire and giving it to man, Oppenheimer is punctuated by mythical and religious references (the book on which the film is based is entitled American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer). Perhaps the most disturbing of these are the words from the Bhagavad Gita, spoken by Vishnu to the warrior Arjuna, with which the father of the atomic bomb is said to have marked the successful detonation of the first nuclear test at Los Alamos in July 1945: “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” An article on the Los Alamos website insists that Oppenheimer saw himself not as the god, but as the stricken hero, reluctant to go to war but obliged to do so. “To uphold dharma, the power which upholds the cosmos and society, Arjuna must do his duty, which is fight.”
In Nolan’s film, the human representative of Lord Vishnu—his high-priest, you might say—is Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, played with gruff conviction by Matt Damon. It is Groves who, after corralling the country’s most brilliant minds in a two-year effort to build a nuclear weapon before Nazi Germany could, gives Oppenheimer an immovable deadline. They had to have conclusive evidence of the atom bomb’s viability before the Yalta Conference in July 1945. By now Hitler had been defeated. So, what was the purpose of continuing with the project? The ends that justified the means were already being reconfigured.
Batter my heart, three person’d God. It is said (and the film references this) that Oppenheimer chose the code name “Trinity” for the first atomic test because of the John Donne poem that opens with these words. The unconscious depths from which the name arose in Oppenheimer’s mind are not available to us; but the poetry of Donne, with its tension between the sacred and the profane, was something that he shared with his former mistress, Jean Tatlock. At the time Oppenheimer dubbed the world-shattering event in the New Mexican desert with this most Christian of epithets, Jean had been dead for eighteen months. She had committed suicide. The hold of Tatlock on Oppenheimer’s psyche is something that Nolan takes pains to point up. The first time the viewer hears the famous words from the Bhagavad Gita is during their early sexual encounter.
What do you do with the snake you find, after you turn over the stone? This image is first raised by Neils Bohr in Cambridge, where the youthful Oppenheimer has apparently tried to kill his tutor with a poisoned apple. Whatever the truth behind this strange episode (it is apparently a story Oppenheimer told against himself), Nolan presents his Promethean protagonist as an obsessive visionary. Cillian Murphy’s intense and often disturbing performance drives this home. “Gravity gets to swallow everything,” as Oppenheimer says of the imploding stars that lead to black holes.
Later in the film, prompted by Bohr’s words about the serpent unleashed, Oppenheimer tries to rein in the consequences of the discovery he has helped to instrumentalize. This does not sit well with Cold War exigencies. Enter Lewis Strauss (a subtly psychopathic Robert Downey Junior), in whom wounded vanity combined with political ambition compel him to use Oppenheimer’s leftist history to destroy him. He succeeds, but is then hoisted on his own petard.
By the time we get to the end of the film, we have been drenched in every kind of power-play imaginable. While Cillian Murphy’s performance conveys the conscience-stricken horror gradually unfolding in Oppenheimer’s mind, Nolan draws his narrative arc to a close with the man, and only the man. Simultaneously on the cover of Time magazine, whilst being mocked by President Truman for speaking about having blood on his hands, the story ends in the corridors of power. As Strauss puts it: “Survival in Washington is about knowing how to get things done.”
*** Back on the ground, between the sixth and the ninth of August 1945, more than a hundred and twenty thousand Japanese civilians died immediately as the result of those two bombs, which we see leaving Los Alamos in their wooden packing cases. Hundreds of thousands died later of radiation poisoning, then cancer and other diseases resulting from the nuclear fallout. Then of course there were the victims of the atomic testing itself. Chris Nolan has referred to the geographical location of the Manhattan Project as “the desolation of where they built Los Alamos.” In fact, this was not a totally unpopulated area. The fallout from the first atomic test, not to mention the subsequent ones, affected the seemingly invisible inhabitants of the New Mexico desert. Hispanic farmers who kept sheep on the land, Navajo Indians whose territory it actually was (there is a fleeting reference to this in the film when a chastened, more circumspect Oppenheimer suggests giving the area “back to the Indians”). Not to mention wildlife. All these suffered the consequences of the atomic tests—and the rural communities went, for the most part, without compensation.
There is another film that I watched in the same week as I watched Oppenheimer, which has a somewhat different take on how the powerless suffer at the hands of worldly power. This is Alice Rohrwacher’s 2018 Lazzaro Felice (Happy as Lazzaro). The film depicts another isolated and impoverished rural community, enslaved as unpaid tobacco growers by the local land-owner (chain-smoking is the one thing that runs through both films).
It is only when the landowner’s son pulls out a mobile phone that we realize these serf-like peasants are not living in some distant historical period. Finally, they are “liberated” by the carabinieri, who transport them to the city, where they are oppressed in a different way, forced to live in a disused oil tank near the railway tracks. In one scene, people seeking work are invited to bid for casual employment by reducing the hourly wage they are prepared to accept. The first one to be taken on offers to work for just one euro an hour.
What makes Lazzaro Felice special is a magical realist atmosphere that somehow shifts the burden of indignity away from the obvious victims. More than anything else, the mysterious central character of Lazzaro embodies the very thing that is so disturbing in the ethos depicted in Oppenheimer. A seemingly simple-minded young peasant who never aggresses against a single creature, Lazzaro evolves into a holy fool over whom death and time have lost their grip. When he falls down a steep hillside and by rights should be fatally injured, the local wolves refuse to harm him, just as the wolf of Gubbio refused to harm Saint Francis. The motif of the wolf is one that Rohrwacher brings in again at the end of the film, a witness to the vulpine mendacity of “civilized” society. It is not intended to be a Christian parable (the Church comes out as badly as anyone else), but yet it is. Lazzaro, who ceases to age whilst everyone else does, ends up bringing warmth and hope to those his life touches.
In Nagasaki, there was a real-life holy fool who bears comparison to this. His name is Takashi Nagai. He was a highly intelligent doctor specializing in radiology; he was also a Christian convert. Just as Lazzaro’s innocence exposes the corruption around him, the scandalous hermeneutic of Nagasaki’s bombing is put in relief by Nagai’s response. He exhorted his compatriots to forgive the atrocity done to them, and to rebuild with faith and trust. The Franciscan thread reappears here too, for the Franciscan monastery near Nagasaki, founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe in the 1930s, was spared destruction by the sheltered position its founder chose for it: on the other side of a mountain, allowing the friars to give invaluable help to the victims of the bombing.
For his part, throughout the six years that Nagai lived on after the bomb had incinerated his wife and given him severe radiation poisoning, Nagai lived in a makeshift hut and simply tried to be of service to others. With his hospital, not to mention his health, in ruins, he carried on practicing medicine. He wrote books and counseled those who lived in despair. He embraced the Hibakusha whose keloid scarring made them the social lepers of their time.
Not far from where Nagai lived, close to the Sanno Shinto shrine that was destroyed like the Cathedral, there stands a strange architectural remnant. The ceremonial gate to the original shrine, known as a Torii: one of its legs was obliterated in the atomic blast, and its twisted lintel is supported solely by the remaining leg. A ritual gateway smashed by the bid for a knowledge that brings death in its wake, it has been wrought into something resembling a Franciscan Tau, or cross. Like the saints who occasionally lighten the darkness of our world, the maimed structure should not still be standing. And yet it is.'

Misunderstandings
“I DON’T WANNA BE ROBIN!”
Bruce doesn’t know what happened.
He’d found the boy pickpocketing a couple and remedied that, intended to feed him and take him somewhere safe (Leslie, not the cave, he doesn’t adopt every child he trips over, Alfred). Unfortunately, it…hadn’t worked out.
And by hadn’t worked out, Bruce means that the child is kicking, screaming, and generally being very uncooperative.
And confusing.
“You aren’t going to be Robin.” Where did that even…? “I’m going to get you something to eat, that’s all.”
Two things happen. One, a red blur drops out of the sky. Two, Jason takes one look and bursts out laughing.
“Jeeze, B, what’d you do?”
Don’t help, Jason.
“Nothing,” he grinds out. The boy in his grip kicks him in the shin and shouts, “Kick his ass, Red!”
What is happening. What is this.
“S’all right, Marco. He’s not gonna hurt ya. Let ‘im go, B. Now.”
He does. Grudgingly. Marco darts behind Jason, latches onto his jacket, and whispers, “You’re not gonna let him make me Robin, right? I don’t wanna be Robin, Red, I don’t wanna live in a cave and eat rats and—”
Bruce is beginning to think this is somehow Jason’s fault. The continued chuckling is not helping.
“Trust me, kiddo, you’re not gonna be Robin. He’s got one already.”
“Robin doesn’t live in a cave,” Bruce points out. Marco’s expression is comical, in a terrible sort of way. “And he doesn’t eat rats.”
“Bullshit!”
“Shh.” Jason reaches back and gives him a shove. “Go home, brat. He won’t come after you.”
Marco vanishes with a speed that makes Bruce a little bit jealous. But right now, he needs an explanation.
“What was that.”
Jason sounds like he’s grinning under that helmet when he says, “It’s a valid fear, B. I mean, I stole tires, got adopted, became Robin, got tortured. Then you got another one! Can you blame kids for being a little wary? You go through us like a Wii remote goes through batteries.”
Another day, he will corral his children and straighten things out. But that day is not this day.
“What have you told them.”
“Why is this my fault?” He presses a hand, fingers splayed, against his chest. “Ouch. That hurts. Hits me right here.”
“Hood.” The urge to de-cowl and rub his face is strong. “We both know you’ve told them scary stories.”
“Yeah.” Jason cracks his neck and swears. “Aww, man, now I gotta be you, God dammit.”
“What.”
He makes a few exaggerated turns, keeping his head and neck immobile, and growls, “I am the night.”*
“Hood.”
“Hey, it’s your own fault for scaring people. Come on, B. Kid touches your car and is never seen again? That kinda thing gets around.”
Why, Jason. Why are you Like This.
“Really.”
“Yup.” He gives Bruce a queen-wave. “Leave the alley kids alone, B. Next time I’ll have to kick your ass to keep my reputation.”
And then he’s gone, leaving Bruce with a nagger of a headache.
THE END
*Lego Batman Family Matters gives us an example of Jason’s Bat-voice. It’s precious. It cleared my acne and everything.

To Love, Honor, and Support (Batdad!Reader x Batman Headcanons)
Requested by @yesthetrashbin for “the batboys being tasked to clean the attic (without Alfred's help cuz that man deserves a day off!) and finds Bruce's and Reader's wedding tape and watch it.” Love this idea so much and I just had to do it!
And please, if you’ve got requests, keep ‘em coming! I always love getting ideas!
Tumblr media
I really like this guy for Bruce Wayne. Who is this? Anyway...
No one likes the idea. Not even Alfred. But you have to corral these crazy kids somehow.
“But - Pops!” Dick whines.
“I don’t even live here.” Jason scoffs.
“TT, is this really necessary, Papa?”
“It’s our day off!” Tim sighs.
“Really, Master Y/N, I’d much rather do it myself-”
“Silence!” you cry. “Alfred, seriously, you haven’t taken a rest in months. I need you to rest, or I’m gonna go crazy from sympathy exhaustion. We have four perfectly healthy and strong young men to help clean this attic, and clean the attic they shall. Jason - you like eating here, right? And the rest of you who live here, this is not optional.”
Everyone reluctantly shuffles onwards. You smile. For once, it seems like you’ve actually done the impossible and wrangled all four of your sons.
Congratulations, you.
You consider going to find Bruce and telling him all about today’s triumph. Now where could he be...
Meanwhile, in the attic...
Tim finds a bunch of old tapes. “Oh my god... this place hasn’t been cleaned in years..”
“What are you yammering about, Drake?”
“They’re video tapes, demon spawn.” Jason says knowledgeably. “Before phones, people used to put stuff on video cameras.”
“I am aware of what they are, Todd.” Damian snaps.
Dick is looking at the little strip of white tape on the cassette: Bruce and Y/N - Wedding. “Guys, its Bruce and Y/N’s wedding tape!”
Jason gives an exaggerated groan, but Dick organizes them all into action, because it’s easier to look through the mess for a video cassette player than it is to actually do what they came up here for.
And eventually they have the player hooked up through a mess of universal adapters so that they can watch the video on Tim’s laptop.
And your face pops up. You look so young, it’s incredible.
“That is Papa?” Damian asks in surprise.
Alfred was the one to make this video. He even spliced it in with some footage of the official wedding tape, making it almost like a documentary.
You’re dressed in your suit, a white rose in your lapel, and young Dick is there, and you’re helping him tie his tie.
“I can’t get it right! It’s under-over-through-over-” Dick looks so adorably frustrated by the tie. You lightly push his hands away.
“Here, let me. I got you.” Dick huffs as you expertly tie the tie and straighten it. “Ooh, you look so handsome, little man!”
“Really?”
Jason playfully punches the present Dick in the shoulder.
“You were so needy.”
“Shut up.:
Alfred has cleared his throat. “Everything alright, Master Y/N?”
“Yep, just making sure my little ring-bearer is all set to go!”
“I’m not that little, Pops.”
You give him a high-five. “Just let me savor it while you’re still shorter than me, okay?”
“...Fine.”
Dick runs off to play and likely rumple his nice wedding suit, but you let him.
Alfred asks you questions about how you’re feeling.
“Oh, no, this is gonna be something you and Dick watch later and make fun of me for, isn’t it?” you suddenly ask, and give a mock glare directly at the camera, making present-day Dick feel slightly scared.
“Come, now, sir. Something to tell your future children.”
“Children? Alfred, do you know something I don’t?” you joke.
“For posterity.” Alfred insists.
“Okay, okay. Look, kid or kids watching this in the future. I - I hope I’ve been a good parent to you. I mean, I know your lives probably haven’t been easy, if Dick’s example is anything to go by.
All of them give an appreciative chuckle.
“But, you know, I promise that I’ll always be there for you. Me and Bruce’ll always be there for you. So, uh, don’t worry about that. Love you guys. And uh, stop watching this now before it gets really embarrassing.”
Alfred chuckles as you wave your arms. “Stop watching, parents kissing ahead!”
And then Alfred is in Bruce’s dressing room, where he’s also having trouble with his tie.
Damian is again astonished by the youthfulness.
“This - stupid- thing! I’m trained in every single kind of knot imaginable, Alfred, why can’t I get this one right?”
“Because you’re nervous, sir?”
Bruce scoffs. “That’s ridiculous, Alfred. There’s nothing to be nervous about. Y/N loves me, and I love him. There’s nothing more to it.”
Alfred sets down the camera. Thankfully it’s facing the mirror so that the kids can see Alfred helping Bruce with his tie in the reflection.
“That’s absolutely right, sir. No reason at all to be nervous. I must’ve been mistaken.:
“I know what you’re doing, Alfred.”
“I know, Master Bruce.”
It cuts to wedding footage. You and Bruce take turns walking down the aisle. The kids can see Jim and Barbara Gordon in the front row. Dr. Leslie Tompkins walks Bruce up the aisle, and Alfred walks you up.
Little Dick walks up proudly in his rumpled suit, his hair mussed, but the rings on the little pillow he holds still in perfect condition.
Neither Jason, Tim, nor Damian can recall Bruce ever smiling so happily
You and Bruce take turns going over the vows to love, to honor, and to support one another, you first.
“Y/N L/N, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
“I do.”
Cheers come from your present-day children, even Damian.
“And do you, Bruce Wayne, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
Bruce gives a firm nod, still smiling like a dork. He doesn’t seem to realize that he hasn’t spoken. A second passes, and he glances at the priest, then back to you and quickly says “I do.”
Dick and Jason are laughing so hard.
“You may now kiss your husband.”
Jason automatically covers Damian’s eyes as you two kiss, and Damian struggles.
The last shot is of you and Bruce walking down the aisle hand in hand, people cheering all around you
And then your voice rattles the attic.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Everybody whirls to see present-day you looking at the attic - which has not been cleaned one bit. Bruce stands behind you looking amused, probably because you.spent the whole time talking about how you finally got them all in line. But he notices something.
“Is that Alfred’s tape?”
Dick gets up and hugs you both tightly, surprising you. Jason, Tim, and even Damian join in
You and Bruce share a look that is at once shocked and joyous.
And unseen by anyone but you, Bruce gives a smile that is just as happy as the one on your wedding day.
