Serendipity (Final War)

Victor cursed as he tumbled through the sky. The inter-dimensional portal into into Azeroth had collapsed unexpectedly due to greater than anticipated perturbations in the barrier between universes. Thankfully, the Grand Empire Alliance’s scientists had done their work well. The portal might have collapsed, but not before he and the others had managed to make it into Azeroth.

There was only one problem: they had all been separated, and he had reappeared in the sky.

On the upside, his power armour was flight capable, so he didn’t have to worry about crashing. Or maybe he did. The warning lights in his visor display had begun to flash rather alarmingly. Apparently, his flight systems were offline.

“Reboot them,” he ordered the armour’s AI, Sentry.

Sentry chuckled. “I already am. Remember, I live in this armour. I kind of need to keep it in one piece too.” The AI began to display information across the display. “In the meantime, since we are very high, how about some soothing music to calm your nerves?”

Victor rolled his eyes. “Seriously? How high are we?”

“About ten miles.”

“Right…” Victor sighed. “Keep trying to reboot the flight systems. In the meantime, do we have any navigational data? I want to know where we are and who is nearby.”

“We appear to be over the area held by the group that refer to themselves as the High Elves. In fact, we’re not all that far from their capital, Silvermoon. However, there is a complication.” Sentry sounded vaguely troubled.

“Cinnamon hasn’t enslaved the populace, has she?” He trusted the Dia-Farron with his life, but she did have megalomaniacal tendencies. In fact, there was actually a planet of primitive raccoon-people that worshipped her as some kind of epic hero due to some unintentional (or maybe not) misunderstandings.

“Not exactly. In fact, I’ve only just picked up her signal. She is currently on the continent known as Kalimdor. As for what I’m referring too…”

Victor’s eyes widened as he took in the sights and sounds before him.

“There is presently an undead army of considerable size marching toward Silvermoon. There does appear to be some resistance, but they are badly outnumbered and in full retreat. I estimate a less than 2% possibility of them repelling the undead assault.”

“Damn it.” Victor scowled. This was the sort of thing he’d been hoping to prevent. Unfortunately, assembling his team and waiting for a favourable transit window had taken longer than expected. “Are flight systems back online yet?”

“They are now.”

“Good.” Victor twisted, and his armour’s thrusters kicked in. “Let’s introduce ourselves.”

“Indeed.” Sentry’s voice was filled with almost savage glee. “Weapons hot, sir?”

“Weapons hot.”

Sylvanas dragged in a shuddering breath. “Fall back!” she screamed. “Fall back!”

Another one of her rangers fell to the foul blades of the undead, and she cursed in rage and frustration. She wasn’t an idiot. She could see how this was going to end. Her rangers were heroes, every one of them worth a hundred undead soldiers. But there were so many undead, thousands, really, for each of them.

“Ranger-General,” one of her rangers grabbed her arm. “We can’t break through. They’re going to surround us.”

Sylvanas clasped the other elf’s arm. “Then we kill as many of them as we can. If we can just buy enough time, then perhaps Silvermoon can -”

BOOM.

Pillars of fire suddenly erupted throughout the forest. The ground shook, and the two elves were almost knocked off their feet as shockwaves rippled outward. More explosions followed, and the sky was suddenly filled with smoke.

“What was that?” Sylvanas shook her head to clear it. “Reinforcements?”

“None of our runners go through, and who could send reinforcements? Lordaeron is gone, and we are cut off.” The other ranger pointed. “Look!”

There was something flying toward them. It was humanoid in shape but too large to be a human. It was clad in blue and silver armour with a vivid orange shape upon the breastplate - a snarling animal of some kind. It turned in the air, and a swarm of small projectiles hurtled from openings in its armour. The projectiles raced through the air, and wherever they landed, another one of those pillars of fire sprang to life.

“Ah, there’s nothing like the smell of plasma to lift one’s mood,” Sentry mused as the AI continued to direct the miniature-plasma bombs to maximise the casualties. Imperial Berserkers were amongst the most elite units in the Empire. However, their numbers were relatively scarce. As a result, they were all armed to the teeth. Yes, there was a reason that many of their fellow soldiers referred to them as ‘the property damage brigade’.

“They’re not going to be happy about us levelling so much of the forest,” Victor mused. “But given the circumstances, I don’t think we have much of a choice. We can’t allow this to get any further out of hand.”

“I’m pinpointing the locations of the remaining high elf troops,” Sentry said. “We’ve got two nearby, one with a different uniform too.”

“Probably a commanding officer then.” Victor angled toward the pair of elves. “Let’s hope the Dia-Farron didn’t mess up the translation software.”

Sylvanas and her fellow ranger, Kalire, readied themselves for battle as the strange armoured figure dropped out of the sky and landed a short distance away. At this distance, the armoured figure cut an even more imposing image. The armour lacked the elegance common to the high elves. Instead, it held a rugged, pragmatic cast. Every inch of it seemed designed to either withstand the harshest of blows or turn them aside.

As the figure strode forward, their footsteps thudded into the ground. The armour had to stand around eight feet tall with powerful reinforcement around the joints and vital areas. It was mostly blue with tracings of silver, but their eyes were drawn to the snarling creature splashed across the chest in vivid orange. This was not armour designed for stealth or subtlety. This was armour designed to be thrown into the heat of battle.

“Stop there!” Sylvanas shouted. “Who are you?”

The figure stopped. There was a brief sound not unlike two blades grinding against each other before a male voice came from the armour. “My name is Victor. I am here to deal with the undead.”

“Is that so?” Sylvanas’s brows furrowed. “Where are you from? Whom do you serve?”

“It’s complicated.” There was an amused chuckle from this… Victor. “We’re not from around here, but I am on your side.” He gestured at the smoke filling the sky. “I’ve already thinned the numbers of the undead considerably. And can you really afford to refuse my help?”

Sylvanas bristled, but he had a point. He had singlehandedly turned the tide. “You may be right, but what’s to stop you from turning your weapons on us when you’re done with the undead? How do we know that you aren’t simply some kind of… demon?”

“Is that what you’re worried about?” The helmet of the armour turned transparent, and Sylvanas found herself staring a human male with dark hair and eyes like blue steel. “I’m human, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

“No humans have technology like yours.”

“Like I said,” Victor replied. “I’m not from around here.” He gestured, and an image sprang to life in the air. “I’ll be happy to answer more of your questions later, but there is still a battle for us to win. This is an image of the area around us, and here are the locations of your troops and those of the undead.”

Kalira nudged Sylvanus. “That is useful magic. We should take advantage of it.”

“If it can be trusted,” Sylvanas whispered back. “Very well,” she said, addressing Victor. “We will accept your help for now. But you will be answering questions once this battle is done.”

Victor waded into the ranks of oncoming undead with a song on his lips. It was an old one that had its origins in Oerba on Remnant. If the legends were true, it had been sung by the Gatekeepers of Oerba as they fought the endless hordes of Grimm.

He had a warp sword in one hand and a heavy-pistol in the other, and the undead died in droves. As well they should have. The warp sword had been designed to cleave through the toughest armour throughout the multiverse. No normal material could withstand it, and even the psionically reinforced armour of the Imperial Zerg could not fully blunt its impact. The heavy-pistol had been created specifically to deal with the ravening hordes typically fielded by the various hive-mind species of the multiverse. It was too powerful to be wielded by a normal person outside of power armour, but its effectiveness was unmatched for a side arm.

At the moment, he was using standard armour-piercing explosive rounds of the type that were most effective against the Grimm. Each was designed to penetrate into the target before detonating in a devastating that tore the target apart from the inside out. He had heavier guns at his disposal, but anything bigger would likely have been overkill.

The undead were monsters, reanimated corpses that knew neither fear nor doubt. However, they were far, far flimsier than the enemies his weapons had been designed to fight. In the meantime, Sentry was also hard at work, for his power armour had countless other weapons at its disposal like drones, lasers, and the like, and it was the AI’s duty and pleasure to put them to work.

“You know,” Sentry said as half a dozen laser beams flashed from emitters built into the shoulder platers of the armour. “This is oddly therapeutic.”

“For us perhaps,” Victor mused. “But to the people we’ve come to help, this would have been a nightmare.”

“You do have a point there,” Sentry replied. “It seems that they’ve begun to pull back. They must have a commander of some sort. Shall we pursue?”

“No,” Victor said after a moment of thought. “We don’t know enough about their command structure or powers to overcommit to a pursuit. There may well be something amongst them that can actually do some real damage to us. For now, we’ll just drive them off. Besides, we’re here to meet the locals. This seems as good an opportunity as any to introduce ourselves.”

Sylvanas sagged as the undead finally began to retreat. More of them fell as Victor continued to fire on them with some kind of energy weaponry. At last, he turned, and Sylvanas schooled her features into an expression of calm despite the turmoil she felt.

Victor might look human, but there was nothing human about his prowess. Oh, that armour of his might well be possessed of incredible magic, to say nothing of the gun he had, but she had seen him wield that sword of his. His movements were those of a warrior of immense skill. There was nothing especially beautiful in the way he fought, but there were was no doubting his effectiveness either. Every strike, every blow, every attack was delivered with brutal efficiency and terrifying force. His defence had been impregnable too. Not a single clean blow had landed despite the undead seeking to swarm him with sheer numbers. She had a feeling that his armour could easily have withstood such attacks, but the fact that none of them had even hit cleanly spoke of a frightening level of proficiency.

“Well, we’re just about done here,” Victor said as he marched toward them. “So… you had some questions, right?”

Sylvanas took a deep breath. Where should she even begin?

Arthas’s fists clenched as he watched the smoke filling the sky. Somehow, he had been driven back. He had no idea where that armoured warrior had come from, but he would find out. That sort of power… he would make it his own.

Shayna Moonriver was a proud Sentinel. For many years, she had protected her people, scouring the forest of those who would do them harm. As of late, there had been far more activity amongst the enemies of the night elves. It was worrying. There were even rumours of demons beings spotted in the wastes beyond the forest. Could the Burning Legion be planning to return?

Surely not.

Yet here she was, investigating reports of strange lights and unusual noises from beyond the forest’s edge.

She slunk from rock to rock, mindful of being seen. Satyrs had been sighted in this area several times before being driven off by her and other Sentinels. However, if a large group of them had…

Her musings were interrupted as she noticed a strange purplish substance on the ground. It seemed to coat the surrounding parched earth like some kind of living carpet. What was this? She had never seen anything like it before. It did not resemble the foul magics occasionally wielded by satyrs and their ilk, nor did it resemble what she could remember of demonic magic either.

As she moved forward to investigate, she was interrupted by movement in the corners of her vision. She was being tracked. Slowly, so as not to alert her pursuers, she straightened before swiftly bursting into a sprint. If she could get to the forest, she could -

Something tackled her from behind. The Sentinel hissed and fought to get her bearings back. She drew a dagger and stabbed at whatever she could reach. Some kind of… of claw batted the weapon aside, and she rolled away, drawing another dagger.

The creature in front of her was totally unfamiliar. It had four legs and a tail, as well as jagged, blade-like claws upon its back. A pair of strange wings fluttered briefly as it stared back at her.

“What are you?” Shayna murmured.

The creature gave a series of clicks and hisses, and she realised that more of them had arrived forming a loose circle around her. She glanced back and forth. This was bad. The creature had yet to do more than bruise her, but she was doubtful she would be so lucky if they fought again. Perhaps if she could distract them…

“Hey!” The ground burst open and something… huge drew itself up out of the earth.

The dagger in her hands suddenly felt totally and utterly inadequate. This newest creature was larger than any beast she’d ever seen. It towered over her, its bulk so large it might as well have been one of the colossal Ancients her people could call upon. It featured a number gigantic blades upon its arms, and its entire form exuded strength and toughness. Thick armour plates covered its body, and each step it took shook the earth. Atop it was an armoured figure.

“So… you guys finally noticed us. Sorry for not asking before I started setting up, but I figured you wouldn’t mind too much since I took the territory from the satyrs.”

“There were satyrs here?” she stuttered.

“Yeah, but they’ve gone to a better place now.” The person underneath the armour was female, judging by their voice. “And by that I mean they decided to contribute their resources to our little base here.”

Shayna had a feeling that was a euphemism for killing them all. “Who are you?” She lifted her dagger. “Rest assured that I will not be easy prey!”

“Oh, can you put that down? We’re not going to hurt you. If we wanted you dead, you would be. Trevor-2 there could have ripped you apart when he knocked you over.” The armoured figure gestured at the first creature Shayna had encountered. “Now, either you can keep swinging that dagger around and I can have my friends there disarm you, or you can put it away and we can talk like civilised people.”

“Do not try to deceive me…”

“Or options three.” The woman patted the massive creature she was standing on. “I can have Titus here disarm you.”

Shayna dropped the dagger.

“Good.” The armoured figure leapt off the massive beast. “Titus, we’re getting activity over in sector three. Check it out.” The creature gave a low growl. “Don’t worry. Professor Cuddlestorm will be with me.”

Shayna frowned as another large armoured creature emerged from the ground, not as big as the first, but still far larger than a horse. “Who are you people?”

“We’ll get to that.” The armoured woman skipped over to Shayna. “So… first things first… how about you tell me what you know about the Burning Legion?”
