I think that America Chavez and Gwen Poole is a very underrated ship.
Both are runaways in the multiverse who lost their families. But one never grew up, and the other was forced to grow up far too soon.

Look, if Gwenpool was ever put into a movie-
Okay, best case scenario would be Beyond the Spiderverse, let's be absolutely honest here. That's probably the best case scenario for any character.
But if you had to put her in the MCU, let me make a pitch:
Spider-Man 4.
Introduce her only as Gwen. She becomes friends with Peter.
Peter, who thanks to No Way Home, is fully aware that a version of him dated a Gwen and she died.
Trick both the audience and Peter into thinking this is Gwen Stacy.
Have her "figure out" Peter is Spider-Man, involve her peripherally in some action scenes, make him afraid this new friend of his is destined for death-
And then, just before he goes off for the third act final battle, she insist on coming along. He tries to refuse, and she admits she's a superhero too. I'm thinking she opens a closet and a pink light comes out of it. Peter takes a moment, and says okay.
Now we're tricking the audience into thinking the MCU's getting a Spider-Gwen.
So, final battle goes on between Spidey and villain who's got a bunch of henchmen in the surrounding area. The sound of gunfire interrupts them, villain questions what that is, Peter says it's his backup. Gunfire grows louder, draws nearer, the assumption is that it's the henchmen firing at her-
And then Gwenpool bursts through the door in a hail of gunfire.
Cue some lampshade hanging like:
"Who the hell is that?!"
"What, were you expecting Spider-Gwen?"
Or something probably better than that, I'm not great at dialogue.

27, 28 with Jason, and 28 with Gwen?
27. What comic book trope do you hate the most?
Fridging. But like, real fridging. The original fridging. The Gail-Simone's-criticism-of-sexist-writing fridging. I hate the fact that the TV Tropes article completely divorces it from its origin and says anybody can he fridged. No, because the point of fridging is that it's sexist writing. I particularly hate what they've done with Gwen Stacy (the original one) because THEY KEEP RE-FRIDGING HER. Did y'all see what they did with Judgement Day? From the deepest recesses of my heart, fuck you Marvel, so fucking much. Anyway read Under the Pink Hood
28. What’s a popular fandom take you disagree with about Jason?
I've said the Pit Rage thing so many times now so let's go somewhere else. He doesn't resent Tim. He never resented Tim. It was always about the fact that Bruce hadn't learned from Jason's death and had put another kid in the costume. While brutal, the intention behind the Titans Tower attack actually isn't that different from Jason trying to convince Mia to stop being Green Arrow's sidekick. He's trying to protect people he sees as children in way over their heads. And honestly? I'm not sure he's wrong. I think sidekicks made a lot of sense when they were first introduced as a vehicle for children to see themselves in comics aimed at them. But comics aren't what they used to be. Not only are a lot of them barely meant for teenagers let alone children, in general the history of sidekicks has been incredibly dark with a lot of them dying or facing other incredible traumatizing events. This is another example of a case where Jason is correct and incorrect at the same time. But let's move on before I spend six hours explaining the intricacies of Jason's role as a foil again
28. What’s a popular fandom take you disagree with about Gwen?
I'm assuming you mean Spider-Gwen because, well, it's me, but forgive me if you meant 616!Gwen (or Gwenpool, I guess?? but that seems unlikely).
Honestly the fandom for Spider-Gwen/Ghost Spider is relatively small and I just haven't seen that many bad takes? Like for the Spiderverse movie it's mostly people shipping her with Miles which I approve of, and the fans of the comics have for the most part read all of her appearances and have very grounded takes on her. I've never seen a bad ship for her I swear. I guess that couple on TikTok that dresses up as Spider-Man!Peter (it's the singing through the MCU guy if you know him) and Spider-Gwen are missing the point, and I actually actively dislike that ship, but I've literally never seen anybody else do it???? Like I guess sometimes she's portrayed as more innocent than she actually is but honestly Gwen-Verse is a worse story for Gwen than any fic or fandom take I've ever seen. Like, good for us, fuck yeah earth-65 fans we're the fucking best

EXCLUSIVE : Marvel Studios And Disney Television Animation To Keep Collaborating With Future Non-Marvel Studios Related Animated Series.
Back on 2019 Disney TVA announced Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur, it’s first collaboration with Marvel Animation, this collab promised much since after Disney Branded Television made the choice of cease all production on Disney XD Originals, this included Marvel Animation as all their original shows not related to the MCU ended production.
By 2020-2021 Marvel Television ceased operations due Kevin Feige taking over all the future Live Action Television Productions after his promotion at Marvel leaving Marvel Animation on a limbo as well as their currently running productions (M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey,Spidey And His Amazing Friends and Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur) of that period where on a limbo or straight up canceled (Howard Duck and Tigra And Dazzler)
On 2021 Marvel Studios Vice-President noted that the studio was creating its own animation department to develop animated productions set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following What If...?, leaving the future of Marvel Animation at even more limbo, however following the release of Disney Junior’s Spidey And His Amazing Friends it was confirmed that Marvel Animation was absorbed on Marvel Studios as an additional Animation Division for projects unrelated to the MCU.
Today Disney Branded Television Animation CEO promoted Disney Television Animation Executives Douglas Bensimon and Edward Mejia as VP of current series on the PR besides overseeing development on current series such as episodic comedies by Big City Greens and Phineas And Ferb alumnis and Serialized Series for Disney+, Bensimon will oversee also development on future Marvel Animated Projects on Disney TVA who are not related to the MCU trought Disney Channel,Disney Junior and Disney+.
This means that Feige,Marvel and Disney wants to keep introducing less well know modern Marvel characters (Gwenpool, Squirrel Girl,Tigra,Dazzler,Jeff The LandShark,Lockjaw And The Pet Avengers etc..)  to new generations without relaying on the MCU.

a clint & kate reading guide
Tumblr media
got a message asking for some recs of their interactions, so why not. if there are any issues missing, it’s bc they were either only in a single panel or i forgot
Tumblr media
fallen son: the death of captain america #3
first meeting between the two! clint’s dressed as his mentor cap, kate doesn’t know it’s clint; the mcu kinda switcharoo’d this. comic context: clint was dead, cap gave his bow to kate bc her attitude reminded him of good ol’ mouthy-authority-questioning hawkeye. clint is alive now, but cap is dead.
Tumblr media
young avengers presents #6
ronin!clint introduces himself to kate and wants his bow back
Tumblr media
mighty avengers v1 #29-30
only a tiny bit of interaction here, but the curse of “clint losing his shirt in kate’s presence” begins. also look at this deceptive cover
Tumblr media
i am an avenger #1 (first story only)
clint’s back as hawkeye and tells kate she can keep the name
avengers: the children’s crusade #6
clint doubles down on “there’s two hawkeyes,” they fight together for a page. comic context: we still don’t know how retro-reincarnation works so you’re fine tbh
Tumblr media
hawkeye v4 (2012) (all issues)
so begins clint and kate working as partners
Tumblr media
hawkeye vs. deadpool (all issues)
clint, kate, and wade in halloween shenanigans
all-new hawkeye v1 & v2 (all issues)
“past and future collide” kinda storyline. i’m conflicted tbh bc i don’t like the attempted retcons going on here, but the mcu did try to roll with one (clint being kate’s hero since childhood) and it’s 11 issues of them working together...if you skip it i’d say “understandable have a nice day”
Tumblr media
gwenpool special #1
clint, kate, and wade are in one of the christmas tales
civil war II: choosing sides #3
clint’s not actually in this issue, but his presence looms over it as kate contemplates his actions and how she’s affected as a fellow hawkeye. comic context: civil war II was an event which i hated and in it clint killed the hulk with a special arrow bc bruce asked him to which i also hated for many reasons you must obtain hawkeye level 5 to understand
Tumblr media
generations: hawkeye & hawkeye
kate meets clint from the past, from when he was around her age. the curse continues
Tumblr media
hawkeye v5 (2016) #12-16
the story thread from generations continues here. you can read the whole series for kate, clint just appears in these issues only
despicable deadpool #299
clint and kate fall out with wade. comic context: secret empire was a whole thing. clint was the leader of the underground avengers rebellion against hydra which took over the country blah blah comic events
Tumblr media
west coast avengers v3 (2019) (all issues)
kate starts up the west coast avengers again. clint, as former leader and original co-founder of the WCA, is there in a semi-mentor role
that’s all for now!

LOKI 4 PRESIDENT! For a narcissist trickster sorcerer with the personality of a praying mantis, there are few occupations in the world that would suit Loki better than president of the United States. A few years ago, in the summer of 2016, comic book writer Christopher Hastings imagined just that in a satirical limited series for Marvel titled Vote Loki.
Five years later, Vote Loki has found its way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the fifth episode of the Disney+ series, “Journey Into Mystery,” a variant Loki (still played by Tom Hiddleston) appears in the desolate “Void” surrounded by a Mad Max-esque posse. On Loki’s tattered blazer is a red, white, and blue “Loki” button, indicating this Loki was, uh, elected to lead. Turn on the subtitles on Disney+ and you’ll find this Loki is credited as “President Loki.”
In an email to Inverse, Christopher Hastings says he had no idea this was going to happen.
“I found out [they were doing Vote Loki] when a trailer for the show featured the campaign outfit from Vote Loki,” Hastings tells Inverse.
When Inverse exchanged emails with Hastings, it was prior to the episode’s premiere, to which Hastings said he was “very curious to see exactly what from the comic gets into the show.”
“I love time travel and multiverse material,” the writer says in praise of Loki. “I am a big fan of the TVA as a setting. I'm eager to see how it goes, and what it might mean for the next phase of MCU movies, especially since multiverse wackiness seems to be a major part of those upcoming movies.”
In 2004, while a student at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Hastings wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Dr. McNinja, a serial webcomic about a doctor who is also a ninja. The series was a cult hit, at one point attracting 110,000 unique visitors a day. By 2011, Hastings was doing work for Marvel, writing single issues of A+X and Howard the Duck. With Chris Bachalo, he co-created Gwenpool — a bizarre blend of Spider-Man ex-girlfriend Gwen Stacy and Deadpool — and penned the 2016-2018 solo series The Unbelievable Gwenpool, teaming up with Japanese studio Gurihiru to create the character’s deeply unique comedic tone.
But during Gwenpool, Hastings spent the summer of 2016 playing with a different Marvel trickster: Loki. In the four-issue miniseries Vote Loki, Hastings spoofed the chaos that was the 2016 race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. In Vote Loki, an ambitious Loki seeks the seat of the president with a very unique campaign strategy: being honest about lying.
With “President Loki” having a minor cameo in the MCU, Inverse caught up with Hastings to look back on his explicitly political riff that took place inside the Marvel Universe.
This interview has been edited for clarity.
Take me back to the origins of Vote Loki. When did the seed for the story plant in your mind? What was going on in the world of culture/politics at that time?
Gosh, it's tough to come up with one thing specifically, because we were making the comic by the seat of our pants, and so many things got scrapped and rewritten along the way, often at the last second. But one of the core topics I wanted to cover had to do with narratives versus reality. It's kind of a given that in the world of politics, truth is this malleable thing, and now more than ever all you have to do to make people believe a lie is to repeat it enough times.
I liked the idea of Loki playing with narrative in a way that wasn't necessarily outright lying, more bending. (Except the bit about being born in Maryland. One outright lie there.) The other driving point I wanted to explore was how Americans can have a tendency to incorporate their national-level politics into part of their identity, and what that does to a person, particularly when a character like Loki is the one on the ticket.
What sort of conversations did you have with Marvel about a political satire starring Loki? What was the elevator pitch that got approval?
Like I said, things changed so many times, I'm not even entirely sure how many versions were kind of approved and then scrapped on the way to get to what was actually published. I think it was more that I assured editor Wil Moss that I could jump on the book (which Marvel was determined to make; they just hadn't decided who was writing it when I was pitching) after talking about the stuff about narrative and identity, and the basic idea that the viewpoint character shouldn't actually be Loki but a journalist covering Loki's campaign.
Vote Loki introduced the character of Nisa Contreras. What was the primary inspiration for her?
That would be my real-life friend, Nisa Contreras. She's not a journalist, but she’s someone I'm sure could take down Loki if he were a) real and b) got on her bad side. I wanted the story to be more about witnessing the tension and the comedy of Loki running for president, about not knowing what was up his sleeve. And so I came up with [a] journalist.
Vote Loki was published over the summer of 2016 when the election was ramping up in awkward ways. (“Pokémon Go to the polls!”) Did the real election influence the comic in any way, including any specific moments?
The comic was a direct response to things that were happening during the 2016 campaign, specifically that a “joke” candidate that was obviously terrible could get pretty far with enough media oxygen and a comfortable political system that ignored the disgust a lot of people had with it.
Vote Loki ran for four issues. Was there ever a possibility for more?
If it was a smash hit, I believe there would have been a President Loki to directly follow Vote Loki.
What do you think of Vote Loki's inclusion in the TV series?
Top five surreal moments of my life.
Do you think Vote Loki could be the focus of its own adapted series/movie?
Oh for sure. You wouldn't even have to take the material from our comic; there's so much more brand-new political madness that a new Vote Loki series or movie could tap into.
A lot has happened in the five years since Vote Loki was published. What are your feelings looking back now in 2021? Did your opinions on the book ever change?
There was a lot happening in American politics in 2016 I missed and wish I had been able to see to include. For example, how broken political polling has become. I had no idea, along with the rest of the country.
It was tricky to do a cohesive narrative amongst a shifting Marvel continuity we had to stay inside; a lot of feedback and demands from various sources within the company and an election that was changing every single day. It was truthfully (heh) a quite stressful book to write, but looking back on it I'm proud to see what we absolutely nailed about American culture. In particular, what we had to say about politics as entertainment and identity, and how a slippery enough politician can not only shake scandal [off] by speeding up an already fast news cycle but embrace and twist it to their advantage.
LOKI WILL AIR ITS FINAL EPISODE JULY 14 ON DISNEY+. VOTE LOKI IS AVAILABLE NOW.

things we desperately need in the mcu:
proper clint barton portrayal.
don't get me wrong. i loved the hawkeye series. but i still didn't like it as much as the matt fraction comic book series. i still don't think we have our blue-eyed, working class, blond, hard of hearing, sunglass wearing archer that we know and love from the comics. first of all, the mcu still has not properly adressed clint's backstory. which is about as good as completely erasing it. where is barney?? erasing him from clint's story already means that it isn't the same clint barton as in the comics. replacing bobbi morse with laura (no offense to laura, i still love her) erases the entire mockingbird/hawkeye storyline that's pretty fucking important to who clint is as a person.
the west coast avengers.
(yes i made it the bi flag colors on purpose)
i fucking adore the west coast avengers. if they were presented into the mcu (somehow), that would mean we'd get both hawkeyes in one team, gwenpool (i cannot verbally express how much i want gwenpool in the mcu), mockingbird (i'd honestly be fine with laura being mockingbird; as long as they'd do it the right way), kid omega (dunno much about him; has cool hair and is a kid), and all those other amazing characters and storylines that the west coast avengers went through.
the thunderbolts.
ok. this is something we could possibly, realistically have; the thunderbolts consist of helmut zemo (who went by the alias "citizen V" during these times; which is just an objectively cool alias to have), techno (the fixer), mach-1 (beetle; who'd also be awesome to have in the mcu in general), songbird (screaming mimi), atlas (goliath), meteorite (moonstone), jolt, charcoal (another awesome name), and sometimes hawkeye.
the thunderbolts are awesome, the definition of morally ambiguous. also, they started out as the reformed masters of evil, which is also awesome. their storylines are complicated and fun and just usual marvel nonsense which i love. they've had so many leaders, members, betrayals, reforms, and plots that it's amazing and hard to keep up with. i just think they'd make for an amazing, morally grey anti-hero kinda team to have in the mcu.
or maybe i just really like helmut zemo. which is also true.
more taskmaster.
you introduced taskmaster? epic. now give us more-
honestly, the taskmaster's entire theme and idea in the comics is so cool and awesome that i don't think it'd be fair to the character to try and confine it all into the background of one movie. give us those stories of taskmaster going on mission and then waking up and having no idea what happened because of their memory issues. give us a more in-depth look into their abilities, their amazingly powerful muscle memory (as opposed to their terrible mental memory), i just love taskmaster stories. because they just capture that perfect balance of "oh my god, this is awesome!" and "oh shit, this is really tragic"
the young avengers.
this is another one that we might be getting in the future; kate bishop, tommy and billy, kid loki, elijah bradley, cassie lang, and (a variant of) nathaniel richards have all already been introduced into the mcu, and with multiverse of madness and the she-hulk series coming out, we might also be getting america chavez and teddy.
do i need to explain why we need these kids in the mcu? c'mon. queer kids fighting space crime. hulkling and wiccan literally getting married. kid loki's entire existance. noh-varr and his earth music. america??? chavez??? is literally amazing???
^those are just some of the reasons why we need young avengers in the mcu.
the asgardians of the galaxy.
and i don't mean just the guardians plus thor. i mean angela, sera, valkyrie, kid loki, throg (the frog of thunder), skurge, thunderstrike, them.
i don't want cishet men plus a tree in space. i want chaotic trans lesbians and gays plus a morally ambiguous genderfluid kid in space. i think we deserve it. i think we've been good.
on a more serious note, sera and angela mean the absolute world to me. the fact that you can have a transgender woman, who's identity is accepted and respected by everyone. the fact that you can have a lesbian couple, who's love is shown to be just as valid and just as real as anyone else's.
and the fact that you can have a genderfluid teenager who is also an asshole like hell yeah babe genderqueer people can be evil too fr i feel seen- /j
so anyways uhh the mcu needs some work. that much is clear. this is just a list of things i really like about the comics that i'd like to see in the mcu as well, and not a serious discussion about the actual problems in the current mcu. also, all of this is from my subjective experiance and opinions, so keep that in mind. that's all for now, folks-

Clea and Evil!Stephen:
You said "I forgot how much the MCU plays into the comics. The murderer is part of the MCU."
I understood "Someone who is/was in the MCU did it. This means the MCU-version of the character killed 616!Stephen."
So, who in the MCU can travel universes? Evil!Stephen, as far as I understood it. Also he murdered Cloakie and another Stephen. So, that's our murderer.
Now, the next part is a bit messy. On one hand, I wanted Clea to fight whoever killed Stephen (and to win). I can totally see her being angry with the murderer.
On the other hand, I want a long conversation between Clea and Evil!Stephen about loosing someone you love dearly, grief, overreacting because of grief, and finding your way out. Both are in similiar situations and I think Clea could go down a very dark path. (Doesn't mean she should or I would like it.) It could probably help them both.
(I don't think we'll see this. So far the MCU didn't treat grief well (Steve but mainly Wanda). (I've been through grief albeit a different one than those two.)
(Speaking of things that won't happen: DS:MoM with 616!Clea as Earth's Sorceress Supreme, Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Anthony Stark, and Evil!Stephen. Those three would get along like a house in fire. In a good way.)
I hope this makes everything clearer.
Oh, okay!! So pretty and quick explanation. I didn't say that the MCU played a part on the murder. I said that the person who gave me a hint on the murderer told me that "we underestimated the MCU". I didn’t know who did it, I was surprised as much as everyone else haha.
But truth be told, Kaecilius isn't a part of the MCU, he was introduced in the comics since Strange Tales. I suppose my source was showing me a way to narrow down the murderer since Kaecilius has a more significant role in the MCU than comics.
But no, comics and MCU hardly crash in the same universe, except for some easter eggs as seen in Gwenpool. So I didn't mean that someone from the actual MCU did it.
Now, regarding your hc... I really liked this idea of Clea and Evil!Stephen talking though their differences! I don't think Evil!Stephen would keep murdering people after everything he has lost (especially Christine), so maybe it could be a misunderstanding at first? But if Kaecilius were still alive, I'm sure Clea would go FERAL (as she should). From what Jed revealed, I'm expecting Clea to be like that hehe xD
And yes, Clea, Evil!Stephen and Tony would all get along, I love this!! Thank you for clarifying your question!

Hawkeye: Who Is Vera Farmiga Playing in the Disney+ Series?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Vera Farmiga’s brief appearance in the trailer for Disney+’s new Hawkeye series certainly set the speculation train alight. “Who could she possibly be playing?” “She looks pretty evil.”
Good news: she’s playing Eleanor Bishop, Kate’s mom; she is in fact pretty evil; and she doesn’t appear to have a whit of ’80s frumpy ex-nun to her character. She’s just going to be a wealthy, amoral jerk. And also maybe a vampire.
Who Is Eleanor Bishop?
Eleanor has a place in Kate’s story going back to her earliest days – she’s mentioned in Young Avengers Special #1 in 2006, shortly after Kate was created by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. Eleanor is the wife of Manhattan publishing magnate Derek Bishop, but she was estranged from him and frequently off cavorting around the world before she died mysteriously on a skiing trip in Boulder, Colorado.
She didn’t make an official appearance until recently, when Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero formally introduced her in Kate’s 2017 Hawkeye solo series (which had killer covers by Eisner-nominated Julian Totino Tedesco). It was Thompson who first seeded that there might be something amiss with Eleanor’s death, and shortly thereafter, we were treated to her return as Kate’s solo series turned into the delightful West Coast Avengers. There, we discovered that she had been working with Madame Masque (the closest thing Kate has to her own personal rogue) in an effort to bring Derek down for his involvement in her death. Sorta.
Will Hawkeye Have Vampires?
It’s almost certainly not going to play into the show, but it’s strongly implied that Eleanor survived because she was made into a vampire by a west coast vampire cult, the Temple of the Shifting Sun. Kate’s gang of reality TV star Avengers – including reformed ex-teen fascist Quentin Quire, self-aware reality hopper Gwenpool, Young Avenger alum America Chavez, badass in a vibranium suit Alloy, and Alloy’s brother Fuse (a cooler, younger version of Absorbing Man, basically) – infiltrates a cult meeting where the Temple of the Shifting Sun is trying to use America Chavez to give them the ability to walk during the day. While there, Eleanor and Kate reconnected, she admitted to trying to use Masque to get back at her ex-husband, and Kate called her on the contradictions in her story (Derek was also working with Masque at the time).
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
This will almost CERTAINLY not be the case in the show. Most MCU media is following one of two tracks. On one track, you have Loki and What If? dealing with multiversal nonsense. On the other, you have shows like WandaVision and The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, working towards an inevitable Young Avengers climax. There is cross-pollination between the two streams, but not enough to justify throwing Blade seeds into a show that’s already stuffed half with story from the Matt Fraction/David Aja seminal Hawkeye run, half with Kelly Thompson’s wonderful work with Kate Bishop. But anything is possible, so maybe those Tracksuit Draculas will be real actual vampires, as well.
Marvel’s Hawkeye premieres on Disney+ on Nov. 24.

Well, here is something interesting. Seth Green was recently talking about What If…? and potentially doing a Howard the Duck (animated) series, and then expressed interest in voicing him in a GwenPool series, but when he was talking about that he didn’t seem to be saying What If…?, he seemed to be saying that one was at some level of development / he had heard whispers of one being considered, but he did not know whether it would be animated or live-action. Because Batroc has been getting a lot more focus recently, and his Gwen Poole storylines are honestly his best.
I did read about Seth Green wanting to make a Howard and Gwen series, based on the story that introduced Gwen, but I didn't get the feeling he was talking about something that was actually in the works.
And also, they kinda can't use Batroc in the main MCU universe anymore.

Who is She-Hulk? A Guide to Marvel's Next TV Star
https://ift.tt/2Zx6AAW
Avengers: Endgame gave us a Hulk in the laboratory. Now Disney+ will be giving us a She-Hulk in the courtroom.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
One of the better parts of Avengers: Endgame was the fact that Professor Hulk was a viable character, able to exist in normal scenes without sticking out like a sore thumb. Once they had that tech figured out, it was only a matter of time before She-Hulk became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And now, here we are, with the announcement of She-Hulk getting her own Disney+ show!
She-Hulk is high on the list of “top Marvel characters to not yet show up in the MCU,” especially now that both the X-Men and Fantastic Four are inevitable arrivals. Since her introduction in 1980, she’s been a major fixture in Marvel and a fresh enough take on an existing property that she rarely feels redundant when standing next to her brutish cousin.
So who is She-Hulk? Let’s take a look ...
THE ORIGINAL SERIES
The funny thing about She-Hulk’s creation was that she was made for the sake of legal strategy. The Lou Ferrigno Incredible Hulk TV show was a massive hit and Marvel came to a dire realization. Since it was an easy trope to give a popular male character a female counterpart (ie. the Bionic Woman), there was strong potential that the TV show would introduce a female version of the Hulk. But if that happened then the character would belong to the TV show! It’s like why Skeeter from Muppet Babies never shows up in actual Muppets stuff.
So Stan Lee went, “John Buscema! Get over here! We’re making a She-Hulk comic!” Then he let David Anthony Kraft and Mike Vosburg take care of the rest of the 25-issue run.
Funny enough, with Savage She-Hulk #1 existing to counter the TV show, the very first narration box even calls attention to the show via making a joke about whether Banner’s first name is David or Bruce.
read more - Eternals: Who is Marvel's Black Knight?
Jennifer Walters starts out as a mild-mannered lawyer until the day her cousin Bruce Banner shows up because he needs someone to confide in about his whole Hulk situation. They’re hanging out for a good 10 minutes before a criminal involved in one of Jen’s cases shows up and shoots her. In order to save Jen, Bruce MacGyvers together a blood transfusion and then splits. Jen soon discovers that she can transform into a giant, jacked, green woman, and so we have She-Hulk.
It’s your usual Bronze Age fare after that. She does double-life hero stuff because She-Hulk gets blamed for tragedies. The supporting cast is boring. The villains are forgettable (outside of a half-man/half-elephant).
Somewhere, it’s established that Hulk isn’t a rage monster simply because of the gamma radiation, but because Banner spent so much of his life holding down his anger. She-Hulk plays on that by showing that instead of being driven by fury, her second form is based on Jen’s lack of confidence. She-Hulk is strong in all the ways Jen Walters could never bring herself to be.
THE FANTASTIC HULK
With her series done, She-Hulk went on to become a member of the Avengers. She remained a regular part of the team up until Brian Michael Bendis’ mid-00s reinvention of the team. What’s interesting is that she was actually part of two major teams at the same time for a period.
read more: The History of Ms. Marvel
As an Avenger, she was pulled into Secret Wars, where a cosmic hipster forced the heroes and villains to fight for the sake of Marvel raking in the sales. Outside of Spider-Man’s symbiotic black costume, the biggest development to come out of the story was Ben Grimm getting cured of being the Thing and remaining in space. She-Hulk took his spot as the Fantastic Four’s down-to-earth muscle for the next few years.
Naturally, Thing returned eventually and She-Hulk was no longer needed. Regardless, this experiment was put together by one John Byrne and he wasn’t finished with She-Hulk by a long shot.
SENSATIONAL AWARENESS
Having found an identity more from her team adventures than her original solo run, She-Hulk gets a more defining spotlight with the 60-issue run of Sensational She-Hulk. No longer playing up a dual identity, Jen dives headfirst into the ridiculousness of the Marvel universe and everyone in it. A lot of it is played for laughs, including She-Hulk’s newfound ability to break the fourth wall.
Fun fact: if you use She-Hulk to defeat Deadpool in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, she’ll give him hell for ripping off her early '90s style.
It’s a fun five years of comics that I’m rather surprised hasn’t been revisited. I’d admittedly be all about her show being like this run, but I’d rather save that for when Gwenpool eventually gets her own Disney+ series.
COURTROOM DRAMA
Outside of being a fixture in the Avengers, She-Hulk doesn’t have much going on until the mid-00s, when Dan Slott and Juan Bobillo relaunched her with another wacky series of misadventures that doesn’t quite go full Deadpool, but does play with the ridiculousness of the superhero world. More specifically, the ridiculousness of law in a superhero world.
Like, if ghosts exist, can they testify in court? If Spider-Man is testifying, how do you know he’s the real Spider-Man? Crazy stuff like that.

Unfortunately, the second half of the series doesn’t work out as well. Mainly because Dan Slott goes into full “continuity cop” mode and has to bring any changes to the status quo from other Marvel writers back to earth, including his own interesting developments. Like there was an X-Men story where She-Hulk and Juggernaut had a brief fling. Rather than ignore or build on that, there’s a whole reveal that it was a She-Hulk from another dimension who did the deed with the unstoppable one.
Peter David took over writing duties after Slott left and while it didn’t last long, it wasn’t half bad.
SHE-HULKAMANIA
There was a time when there were SO MANY Hulk-based characters running around at the same time. Rick Jones (A-Bomb), General Ross (Red Hulk), Betty Ross (Red She-Hulk), Hulk’s barbarian space son (Skaar), Hulk’s alternate future daughter (Lyra), and not to mention all of Hulk’s space gladiator buddies who had settled on Earth. Jen was...there.
Even though she didn’t leave much of a lasting impression, Lyra starred in her own miniseries, All-New Savage She-Hulk, and Jen acted as a mentor and a supporting character. So Lyra’s deal? Okay, deep breath.

In an alternate future, men and women are barbarians going through a literal gender war. The amazon warrior Thundra has had a few run-ins with the Hulk via time-travel and decided to make the strongest warrior ever via getting impregnated by him. In a non-sexual way. Really. As a teenager, Lyra the She-Hulk was ostracized by her peers for being partially created by a dude, but she could kick ass and that was what was important. She went back to the present to sleep with and/or kill Norman Osborn and hooked up with Jen along the way.
Anyway, Lyra’s deal is that anger is her weakness. If she gets mad, she gets weaker.
SHAKEN FOUNDATION
So Jonathan Hickman wrote Fantastic Four and FF (Future Foundation) concurrently and brought huge interest into that side of Marvel for a bit. A couple years later, Hickman wrote the 2015 version of Secret Wars, which was partially Marvel’s way of getting rid of Fantastic Four/FF for a while because of movie rights bullshit. In the in-between, Matt Fraction wrote the two titles.
His Fantastic Four was more or less forgettable, except for a scene where a rightfully pissed Human Torch ranted at Reed and Sue for constantly patronizing him. God, that part was so good.

FF was something very different. Fraction teamed with Mike Allred and had a team of She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Medusa, and a pop-star named Darla who was wearing a robot Thing costume. The whole thing was easily the better series of the two, was quirky beyond belief, and only now do I realize that her show needs a group of super-smart underground mole creatures announcing that they must protect “The Jen” at all costs.
LAWYERS WRITING LAWYERS
There was a time when Charles Soule wrote like 99% of comics. He might be writing this article for all I know. I’ll have to check the byline later to be sure it’s me. Not only is Soule incredibly prolific, but he’s also a practicing lawyer. Kind of the perfect choice for She-Hulk, right?
Javier Pulido is on art and it’s something you either love or hate. He has some really cool layouts, but Jen’s wonky eyes might take you out of the book too often.
Anyway, it’s more emphasis on She-Hulk’s lawyer stuff, including a courtroom showdown with fellow super-lawyer Daredevil. As much of a main event as that is, the highlight to me is She-Hulk’s time assisting Kristoff, Dr. Doom’s adopted son who is so casual about the utter weirdness of his father’s machinations.
THE FAMILY BANNER
You know how I have been gushing about all the fun runs with She-Hulk? Lately, she’s been...not so sunny. The story Civil War II happened, which not only started with She-Hulk getting beaten within an inch of her life by Thanos, but later on, Hawkeye killed Bruce Banner. Don’t worry, Bruce got better thanks to very bizarre comic book reasons, but for a time, Jen had to deal with some nasty trauma.
It was here that they brought back a concept from the early 90s run: She-Hulk has a gray form that makes her rage-driven and more like Bruce. Her new series was titled Hulk because of her daily struggle with not turning into the beast and ruining everything. Mariko Tamaki’s run on the book is tense and takes its time getting to the monster at the end of the book, but is still not as dark as the pitch would initially have you believe. It’s not about living with trauma, but living through trauma and finding the light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s fine for what it is, but I’m hoping it’s not the tone of the Disney+ show. At least MCU Thanos isn’t around to clobber her.
