I think that sometimes that the normalizing of discord servers as a necessity for your online branding has made us forget that what it is is a fan space that the creator has control over. That's not been normal since AOL was our primary internet provider.
It benefits the creator more than the audience, and so if we choose to have one - which full disclosure, I have one and so does the Atomless - then it's our responsibility to make that a safe place for the fans to exist. That means that when a server gets big, it will need a trained moderator team.
If you don't have a discord server, fan communities will still form, you can't stop that, we do what we want. But if you want the privilege that comes with having your fandom in your eyeline, immediately accessable to you, that comes with extra work. I don't like that it's the default to create an "official" discord for everything because I think it should be more of a deliberate choice that is budgeted for and planned.
Anyway this is not really meant to be a vague post, because although it's inspired by what transpired through dropout, I think they ultimately stumbled their way to the right call, and this is just something I've noticed as a trend in general, with them far from the most serious example.

I think 90% of my gripes with how modern anime looks comes down to flat color design/palettes.
Non-cohesive, washed-out color palettes can destroy lineart quality. I see this all the time when comparing an anime's lineart/layout to its colored/post-processed final product and it's heartbreaking. Compare this pre-color vs. final frame from Dungeon Meshi's OP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So much sharpness and detail and weight gets washed out and flattened by 'meh' color design. I LOVE the flow and thickness and shadows in the fabrics on the left. The white against pastel really brings it out. Check out all the detail in their hair, the highlights in Rin's, the different hues to denote hair color, the blue tint in the clothes' shadows, and how all of that just gets... lost. It works, but it's not particularly good and does a disservice to the line-artist.
I'm using Dungeon Meshi as an example not because it's bad, I'm just especially disappointed because this is Studio Trigger we're talking about. The character animation is fantastic, but the color design is usually much more exciting. We're not seeing Trigger at their full potential, so I'm focusing on them.
Here's a very quick and messy color correct. Not meant to be taken seriously, just to provide comparison to see why colors can feel "washed out." Top is edit, bottom is original.
You can really see how desaturated and "white fluorescent lighting" the original color palettes are.
[Remember: the easiest way to make your colors more lively is to choose a warm or cool tint. From there, you can play around with bringing out complementary colors for a cohesive palette (I warmed Marcille's skintone and hair but made sure to bring out her deep blue clothes). Avoid using too many blend mode layers; hand-picking colors will really help you build your innate color sense and find a color style. Try using saturated colors in unexpected places! If you're coloring a night scene, try using deep blues or greens or magentas. You see these deep colors used all the time in older anime because they couldn't rely on a lightness scale to make colors darker, they had to use darker paints with specific hues. Don't overthink it, simpler is better!]

fuckers spouting 'degrowth' are so fucking insidious. brand new way of saying anticiv or anprim, which are both just as fucking insidious. how do you plan on fucking doing 'degrowth' without literally forcing people to have less kids, legally? like, you can't. 'extract less resources :)' the issue isn't the scale of resource extraction, it's the efficiency. efficiency makes population growth. population growth demands scale. you either have high fucking infant mortality, ban having children, or you cope with the fact that we're just going to fucking need this many resources. we're going to need this fucking many resources, so let's try to move onto ones that are renewable or extremely efficient, yeah?
rather than spouting off about how we can totally just limit our consumption. we can't, not unless you somehow reform the brains of every single fucking human into being happy to voluntarily enjoy austerity. humans aren't greedy by nature, but we absolutely do enjoy plenty, and we're not going to fix the world by just teaching everyone how to treat it properly
how do you plan to sustain that? creating a culture around consumption really can only go so far. we can make it a whole lot better, but we're not going to turn it into degrowth, because that means having a culture that's not just okay with a lack of eternal growth and ultra-consumption, which we do want to not have, but a culture that's okay with actively rejecting any completely and easily available to everyone plenty for the sake of happiness of the 10th generation down the line, and that's just miserable

Yay! Finally someone that watch industry on tumblr. I am happy HBO didn’t cancel the show, but I’m scared for season 3 cause it’s underrated.
If you don’t mind me renting about Rob and Harper, I wanted to be together at first but now I’m off the ship. Though I truly believe there’s a genuine reason why Rob keeps rejecting (I want so much better for Harp, but she’s so hurt by this) her. He flirts and initiate things between them but he can’t go through with it. Is it because most of the time she’s also high when they get a moment and he doesn’t want it like that or and is because of his fetish and she doesn’t look like the type.
I’m so confused because he takes a her advice and cares about her opinions about him. He wants to be sober because Harper said something, but also he talked down on Harper intelligence/ skills to make Yas feel better :/ . Part of me want to think it’s because liking Harper isn’t just sex for him but he isn’t ready for something serious? Or does he believe Harper only wants him when she’s under the influence. I need the writers to have an episode about Robert past and have a sit down with Harper explain where his mind or feelings about her truly is.
Yep! There's actually one pierpoint blog who makes gifs every week and people tagging their thoughts too, so like there's more than one someone I guess.. we're like five. I think HBO in general cancels less than their sub HBO max ; and I don't know where we're going with this season, it could as well be a closure tbh.
Well, well well, them two. I'm not sure I remember super well but I always felt like none of them were going into this relationship seriously so I watched them mindlessly. Harper is so career focused, but finds comfort in him, likes the attention and cares about him as a friend. Rob seemed to be ok with being used? For optics, games, sex. Like his power dynamic kink with Yas, a rich heir, did tell a lot about him. Yas' high statut and his proximity with Harper (he saw her vulnerable, bluffing and such) may be part of why he'd talk down on Harper's natural skills. Also want to add it may comes from his own insecurities and envy seeing how Harper's the "standout" on their floor. Like you said, he still values her opinions and shows a lot affection toward her. The way he takes care of her in the first S2 episodes lowkey had me sold on his tender side. If he doesn't go all on the way, it's most likely because she only comes to him when she's using or needs some and so it appears obvious she doesn't take him seriously. I wouldn't try anything either with someone who doesn't see me as equal.
I haven't thought much about Rob's motivation to be honest so that's my small take. But please! keep ranting about the show whenever you like.

One thing my brain keeps going back to about Pacific Rim (besides the rad giant robots) is the whole existence of kaiju organ harvesters and their implications.
Like, you have Hannibal Chau, a bizarre and interesting character, but we’re presented with a black market operation that seems mostly interested in the “alternative medicine” uses of kaiju parts.
But my brain demands to know: what does the corporate kaiju harvesting industry look like? Sure kaiju blood is toxic, but there are plenty of toxic materials that have useful applications. Are there chemical companies studying kaiju organs? Big-Pharma jumping on the kaiju bone-powder bandwagon? Are bio-tech firms studying kaiju hide to make tougher materials? Agribusinesses clamoring to acquire kaiju crap for fertilizer?
I’m picturing something like the age of whaling, when humans hunted giant animals and carved them up to feed insatiable industries. Whale-oil lighting lanterns for entire cities, whale-bone being used in everything from knick-knacks, tools, umbrellas, and corsets. Ambergris alone was used in perfumes, medicines, cooking. It was even added to wine as an aphrodisiac.
We glimpsed how kaiju affected pop-culture. Now picture a kaiju smashing a city, but the stock market going up for construction companies (rebuilding the cities), vulture real estate (buying the destroyed land cheap), and all the other corporations that profit from the systematic dismantling of a kaiju corpse and making money off of its parts. Sure, a city was roughed up and who knows how many thousands are dead, but it’s a better windfall when a kaiju makes landfall. It’s always less profitable when jaegers kill them too quickly; sea-based extractions are so much more expensive.
Imagine entire industries, entire economies that don’t just make money from the devastation of kaiju attacks, but grow dependent on them. And then the laws, the squabbles over those valuable, resource-rich kaiju corpses. If a kaiju attacks one country but keeps rampaging and is killed in the country next door, who has claim over the body? The party who was damaged more by it or the country where the corpse physically is? Bidding wars over “cleanup” contracts that cut corners and are only interested in collecting those sweet, sweet, kaiju parts as fast as possible, even if their official mandate is supposed to be the safe removal and cleanup of a toxic substance.
Once jaegers started getting efficient at killing kaiju, the people with all the money became less interested in solving the problem of kaiju attacks and switched to merely managing the industries that kaiju-killing feeds.
What? You want to put more resources into R&D to try and close the Breach? Whatever for? The kaiju comes out, jaegers kill it, and the “host country” gets the proceeds from the kaiju’s body. It’s a win-win for everyone. Why waste time, money, and effort solving a problem that isn’t a problem anymore?
Everything is under control.

A big part of the problem is not one studio has figured out how to make streaming a profitable business model. None of them. And they're all starting to realize this (especially post-strike).
Netflix is the only one who's kind of managing because they were the first and got a lot of subscribers early. But they also keep raising prices and cutting content and opting for cheaper content because they don't have a long term profitable business model.
They all threw tons of money at original content early on to build up subscribers. But then they realized infinite subscriber growth is not a thing. And the more streaming services there are, the fewer people will subscribe to any individual one. So they're cancelling things, deleting them altogether.
As much as I wanted someone to adopt our pirates, I'm not really surprised. They're all losing money. None of them know how to make streaming work. Pretty much everything has merged into a handful of massive conglomerates. And until something changes we're going to get a whole lot of hot garbage.

I was reading the comments under Bible's announcement post for '4 minutes' and while I was so excited for this project finally seeing the light of day, I was also disappointed while reading the comments.
Why are we still having discussions about top/bottom in 2024? I know a lot of BLs have made you believe that top and bottom are entire personalities but that is simply not true. They are just sexual preferences and believe it or not sexual preferences do not define someone's personality.
That is why I feel the lead pair in "Pit Babe" is so path breaking. It is a very big example that your personality does'nt define your sexual life. Whose name comes first in a ship doesn't matter. It doesn't change anything. Also "Bad Buddy" in this matter, they refused to set themselves in boxes of wife(เมีย) and husband(ผัว). It was a series that very nicely explained the stereotypes gay couples face and the stereotypes that still exist in the BL industry.
Masculine, dominant ≠ Top and Feminine, submissive ≠ Bottom always (key word being always because there are people who fit into masculine top and feminine bottom too which is perfectly fine but diversity and representation of other people in the spectrum is equally important) and that is something that needs to be understood. I don't think I could have said it better than P'Apo myself. Also more power to him because he is one of the few BL actors who I have seen openly talking about this topic.
And believe me guys someone who played Vegas doesn't need to always play roles like that, moreover we don't even know what his role and character is going to be like. This is what acting is. Don't limit actors into boxes.
youtube
P.S This top/bottom discussion really needs to go. I haven't only seen this in comment section of BL actors but also in the comment section of gay couples. If they let you in this part of their life that's okay but if they are not comfortable sharing, just let it go. It hardly matters. We need to stop seeing everything with heteronormative lenses where there has to be a female/wife (เมีย) role and a male/husband (ผัว) role in every relationship.

just learned that David Jenkins’ first show, People of Earth, aired for two seasons and was greenlit for a third, and he scripted the entire third season before the network changed its mind and cancelled it. That is fucking maddening actually.

What is it with this new framing by drug companies of gastrointestinal issues as "just girly things"???? Like. I spent last week with my grandparents which meant that live TV was on in the background at nearly all waking hours and the amount of commercials I've seen, from laxative companies to nutritional supplement companies framing chronic constipation, bloating, and other GI issues as just little things that happen when you're a woman. There was one commercial where this woman was like (paraphrased) "I get constipated a lot, like most women do". Also framing constipation as just making you feel 'heavy' and encouraging laxative and supplement use to feel 'lighter'. Chronic constipation isn't about feeling 'heavy'! It's got nothing to do with how you feel! It's often a symptom of an underlying GI disorder and not just a feeling oh my god.
Ladies. It is not a normal part of womanhood to be experiencing chronic GI issues. Talk to your doctor. Don't listen to these companies telling you to just treat yourself with OTC solutions and that your very real issues are just 'feeling heavy'. Oh my god. As someone who actually has these issues this is infuriating.

My growth as an artist was heavily stifled by the dogmatism in the online art community I was subjected to as a teen (aka by rhetoric implying or straight up saying art has to be made a certain way to be valuable, which discouraged me from experimenting and developing for my own methods, customising my artistic process felt illegal) and i will forever be mad about it
Anyways if any young artist follows me : the only good art advice is get weird about it and fuck around a lot. Also be honest

Pisses me off and doesn't let me go that I learned a few days ago that the actors of "City of Stars" got called queerbaiter for kissing on the mouth in a tiktok meme / trend for fun (a trend so many did, just usually they kiss on the cheek or do whatever, these two are the first actually kissing on the mouth... 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ who cares??). BUT Porsche was made to APOLOGISE about it (tho he doesn't fully understand what it means because duh.... there is nothing to understand here, he didn't do anything wrong...)!! Can you fucking believe this backwards shit happening with 2024s social media police?!?!? (and pretty sure lead on by people who aren't even queer themselves because all the queers I know are fine or indifferent with this stuff)
Congratulations @ the moral police / haters who literally told two real life men to not be allowed to kiss each other on the mouth just because they are not dating for real and they assume they are hetero.
This damn queerbaiting discourse going through the fandom on social media right now, where people being so hell bent over it that it MUST apply to real people too.... WHICH IT DOES NOT! Queerbaiting is literally about fictional content marketed towards queer people but then not delivering anything queer related in the fiction. It is literally a term made because of Supernatural and Teen Wolf baity marketing back then! BL is the exact opposite of that!! And even if you argue that the actors are doing fanservice, which isn't as fishy anymore as it was a few years ago, THEN they are still marketing their series with it WHICH IS QUEER and therefore still doesn't qualify as queerbaiting! If fans still doesn't understand that fanservice is mainly just fun and games and not real dating actors, then that too is not queerbaiting. And I am talking about nowadays fanservice, not TharnType era fanservice where they actually pretended to be more than just coworkers.
Real people can not queerbait, because you don't know their true sexuality. Even if they say they are straight, they could still keep private (or not even know themselves) that they are open to experiment or are questioning! And even IF they are 100% straight: Newsflash even 100% heterocis & people who are not dating are totally allowed to kiss each other on the mouth if they want to for funsies! Body autonomy, free will, consent and all that~
Also wouldn't it be great if even hetero guys kiss each other without fear and judgement?

im quite tired of talking about totk, like im sure you all know by know just how frustrated i am, but something i still strongly believe was the logical, and best thing to do in a sequel.. -
while botw was about you feeling lost in a strange world with neither you nor link knowing anything and both discovering it as you go, the theme of lonelyness and isolation, freeing the spirits of dead friends you need toremember again, in the end finally reuniting with one of the only friends still alive, after a 100 years
totk should have been about community, about working together with zelda at your side, as a companion, after having been seperated for so long, and seeing nothing of the time between titles, this should have been her travelling alongside you, after botw you'd WANT to spend time with her and get to know her more, her being the diplomat, the archtitect, the scientist, the translator of old texts, a historian trying to find out the truth about what her fathers kingdom was built on, to right old wrongs perhaps, for a better future- theres so much that she should have been, so much of her character was primed to go into this direction- and instead she is a pretty prize with no personality you get at the end like this is an 80s cartoon still
(this is disregarding the whole fact that ganondorf, AS WELL, should have been a giant factor in all this, in the history of it all, to explore his character and his actions, to have zelda research and find out about histroy clearly written by the victors- theres so much potential depth here that it dirves me crazy, botw was such a set up for more that was wasted, utterly wasted, for something i wouldnt even want to call paper thin bc even paper has more depth than anything in totk)

Some shameless POS literally used AI to steal my friend's animated film
I usually don't post stuff like this but this shit's insane and downright insulting. I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2022, a pretty well known animation school in the US, and every animation student on their final year of college has to make an animated film for our final thesis. If you have any idea of the animation making process, you would know that making an entire film by yourself in one year is batshit insane and extremely exhausting, to the point where I'm still feeling the effects of the process on my physical and mental wellbeing 2 years after I graduated. Once more, my friends and I did it during the covid period, which was another level of hell. I was literally watching my grandfather's funeral while working in the labs at 2am because I couldn't fly home to attend it because we had to make this film. This film was our lifeblood, the culmination of 4 years of hell at school which was suppose to be our gateway into the industry. Tldr, it's fucking difficult to do, especially on your own.
So imagine 2 years later and I wake up to a bunch of messages on our alumni chat where a dear friend of mine posted a link to a tiktok video of someone literally stealing her entire film and superimpose it shot by shot and claim it as their own ad for their AI game. As animators, we aren't unaware of people stealing our films and reposting them elsewhere. Heck my own film "The End" was stolen from our school vimeo and posted on tiktok BEFORE IT WAS EVEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED, and that tiktok got hundreds of thousands of views while a year after my own real release my film is still struggling in the thousands.
But this
This is a fucking new low.
Can you imagine? A fresh graduate going through literal blood sweat and tears to make a film on their own that is so important to their future in the industry, to get them a job, with a film that represents a part of themselves to the world, just used as fodder for some stupid tech assholes? It's infuriating. It's insulting. It's literally a big fuck you to the hundreds of students who spent their lives toiling to make these films from the heart who are just desperate to get into the industry.
The animation industry right now is in complete shambles. People are graduating from animation schools with thousands of dollars in dept only to be met with a wasteland of minimum wage and lack of funding and competing for jobs with people who have already been in the industry for years affected by the massive layoffs not only in the movie but also the gaming industries. These films we make for our thesis aren't just films made for fun, they represent our lifeblood, our only opportunity to get a job as a graduate in this sea of hell. If you didn't make a good film, chances are you're never even stepping foot in the industry ever. It's our golden ticket that we would put thousands of hours through, sleepless nights and pushing through no matter the circumstances of sickness and pain it caused us.
And now some dumb fucking AI using dickbags see that and decide it's worth nothing.
Here's a link to my friend's real film. Please go watch it and support her work. I'm not even gonna link the other piece of shit tiktok because I don't want that video to even get a single extra view but here's a recording my friend made so you can see this malarkey side by side.
It's heartbreaking to see my friend's film barely getting any views while the stolen garbage is already in the thousands. I hope the person who stole my friend's work and made that shit dies in a fiery car crash and go straight to hell.
I cannot emphasise how we must not let this shit continue to happen. We're living in a fucking dystopia and unless we do something about it and support those affected by it it's only going to get worse. They're already expanded from stealing people's still art to stealing people's entire films, if we don't stop this nothing we create would ever be safe.
My friend's film:

god a few of the notes on that post about leather are so
“then just stop wearing leather OR pleather!!! nobody NEEDS leather!!!”
okay, I’ll bite: what are we supposed to make shoes out of?
I don’t want to wear plastic clothing. period. if it’s at all possible to avoid. call me crazy, but I don’t consider destroying habitats on a massive scale via microplastic runoff in water and non-biodegradable plastic waste in landfills “more humane,” to animals OR people. I recognize that a lot of people don’t have the luxury of that choice, because synthetics are often cheaper, and I would never judge those individuals for it. but fortunately, I do, and that’s the choice I’ve made
so that leaves the natural materials that are currently commercially viable. leather and fur are out, and by strict v*gan definitions, so are wool and silk. plant-based fibers it is, then!
I live in Massachusetts, USA. let me just lace up my canvas sneakers to go out in the next February blizzard
and I’m sure people who work dangerous jobs like construction will love the sturdy protection of hemp slip-ons
be v*gan if you want to (censoring to avoid tags); I get that it’s usually coming from a place of compassion even if I don’t agree on the execution. but for gods’ sakes, don’t be this out-of-touch. just like I know that not everyone will agree with my personal decisions on how to live the most ethical life I feel I can, please respect that other people’s realities may look different from yours
