While watching "Big sky" with Jensen Ackles, I saw so many Supernatural references in this show. Whether he double-checks an FBI ID, gives his female friend Cassie (...) for her move in a new house a bucket of salt with "prevention is better" kind of lines, his partner is dressing with THE Led Zeppelin T-shirt we fanfic readers knew as well from ImYourHoneyBee's "Best to see these true colors..." . There is a muscle car in this one episode a dead former partner, and an article about "Beau" (Jensen) moaning over his death. (This was kicking me most 🥺) And the most fascinating thing: Zero love interest at all!! 

Big sky season 3 is worth looking at. Especially for Supernatural fans or anybody, ‘cause Jensen Ackles is an excellent actor and a funny one too 😉

Summary: Cas is gone and Dean doesn't know how to deal. Sunk deep into the worst depression he's ever been through Dean only pulls himself together when Jack comes to visit, intent on repairing his relationship with Castiel's son. Eventually, as a result of an offhanded comment Sam makes, Dean begins to dream of a better future and becomes determined to rescue Castiel from the Empty. It's a rough go, but he's successful and Cas is back.

Fed nightmares during his time in the darkness of an angel's afterlife, Castiel doesn't believe that Dean is real. Refusing to speak or to come out of the literal closet, will Cas let Dean persuade him that he really is saved?

Commentary: This is one of the first fics I read in this fandom, so I feel very nostalgic about it (well, not that it was that long ago).

The narrative of this story is pretty much devided into two parts - first we see Dean grief and then he gets Cas back from the Empty and we see them together (this part is longer).

I think the author did such a good job with the description of the feelings, thoughts and other behaviors Dean would've been going through. Dean is honest with himself about his feelings for Castiel and there are some great scenes of him being a good parental figure for Jack.

The story also explores Dean's and Cas' relationship with Jack, Claire, Sam, Eileen, Jody, Donna etc...all the characters have time to shaer with Dean and Cas, making the story have more layers and the characters be more complex.

If you consider the Empty lore we learn in season 15 canon (I often ignore it), then Cas was fed his worst nightmares there. It's like Hell for Angels and demons, but with mental torture, not just physical. So, when Dean rescues him from the empty, it makes sense that he thinks this is another nightmare.

The story goes on, Cas lives with Dean (they don't share a room lol), feelings are talked out etc etc.

I really enjoy this one, I think the way the author describes magic theory, explores lore and makes up spells is so creative and well done. One of my favorite Empty rescues in fanfic!

The down side is that it is overlly cheesy at times and there are some cringe lines and exchanges.

I love Suptober. The lists get published and the creativity starts to flow and if you didn’t already know it, the Supernatural fandom is overflowing with creativity and incredible creators, and Suptober is one of the best times of the year to showcase that talent. 

This year has brought us so many stories and new art already, and we’re only a little over halfway through. One of those stories is The Ber Months. Now, I’m a sucker for photographer!Dean, so this was an easy one for me to choose, but having photographer!Cas too is just the gift that keeps on giving. The Ber Months is about two men who share the same passion for photography, but who look at it in completely opposite ways. Dean has a more jaded lens, wanting to share the raw reality of the world they live in, even at it’s darkest moments. Cas wants to share the beauty and joy in the world, the love people have not only for each other but for life itself. Together they are tasked with creating a fall themed coffee table book, and during the journey, they find something in each other. 

It’s a sweet story with incredible imagery, and Dean’s pov as he figures out a new way to see things while sharing a lot of fall themed moments with Cas. If you’re looking for a warm story that will make you want to visit a pumpkin patch and drink something warm, then The Ber Months is the fic for you.

I love a work that explores pre-series Dean, and this one is great. Basically, think what-if later seasons Cas and pre-series Dean met (Strandlines by aeli_kindara is another good example of this premise, but in Strandlines, it is pre-series Cas as well as pre-series Dean).

On a similar note, psalm 40:2 is a great pre-series Dean, future-Cas fic. I am a bi Dean believer but this fic did sway me toward the gay Dean camp because it’s simply so good.

On a different note, this is one of my favorite Claire fics. It looks at Claire’s relationship with Cas and the impossibility of it, and it’s so artfully done.

Bus Loop Madness by batz_in_blue

Literally just a “what if everyone lived, Jack was a toddler, and they all picked him up from school?” AU. I audibly laughed while reading this, and it’s an essential pick-me-up from the heavier fics.

More of my favorite sobsicles fics include: gorging myself on you, still can’t get full (insatiable), and he’s back (with a mind of his own), six hundred sundays (and many more), oh sooner or later it all comes down to faith, things happen (they do, they do, and they do), according to all known laws of life, and profoundly bonded (by law)

Also, honorable mentions to Ninety One Whiskey, which is such a good fic, and Make a Believer Outta Me, which is a Hocus Pocus AU that is honestly just a fun time.

Some sentences feel wrong on his tongue without one, the unsaid words jumping over themselves to leap out of his mouth like living things. It took him a long time to label it love, but what else could the urge be when Cas makes him feel so much? When Cas is hurt, Dean's gruff, “You good?” needs a comma and a ‘sweetheart’ at the end. Calling out in a dank, dusty storage room for a hand with hauling boxes or needing a clarifying eye on an obscure, potentially magical trinket wants to start with a questioning, “Hey, honey?” He can almost taste it, dripping off his tongue sweet and wanting, casual in its intimacy. Sometimes, Dean slips up. “Good morning, sunshine,” while passing Cas a doctored-up cup of coffee in his favourite mug has become a morning ritual. It’s innocuous enough to get away with if he doesn’t think about it too hard. Sometimes, he tries his best to make it sarcastic, but it inevitably comes out too sincere. Cas hasn't caught on yet, though, and Sam has stopped shooting him questioning side-eyes, so Dean's pretty sure he's pulling it off. The problem is that it’s not enough. On the other side of the nest, Cas is curled into a tight ball, his tail flipped over his nose like a blanket. Dean wonders if he’s cold too.

It’s dark inside their nest, almost pitch black with how the maple leaves block out the starlight. Cas is nothing but a lump, but Dean bets that if they were lumps together, they’d be warmer. It’s not gay if they’re huddling for warmth, right? It should also be taken into account that they’re squirrels, and he’s pretty sure it’s not gay if they’re squirrels, either.

Dean is suffering because he’d insisted that they be two squirrels sleeping on opposite sides of the nest, five inches apart because they’re not gay.
