Rocks for Jocks
Rocks for Jocks by Castielslostwings Rating: Explicit Word Count: 58k
Dean Winchester never expected to see the gorgeous, intriguing man from his unforgettable one-night-stand again. He's even more shocked and embarrassed when the guy turns out to be the newest Professor at the same College for which he coaches a winning Division 1 football team. Half of his starting players are failing this guy's class, and in exchange for Castiel letting them play, Dean's promised to attend extra tutoring sessions along with them. That means he's going to be working side-by-side with the only man on campus who knows that he's bisexual and has firsthand proof. Not to mention the fact that Dean is definitely still crushing on him, hard. It's a good thing Castiel is a Professor because Dean has a lot to learn, starting with the fact that people can surprise you, if you'll just give them a chance. A coming out story full of fluff and sports and rocks and love.
If there's one thing that has never done it for me, it's sports. This story, however, managed to not only entertain but actually pull me in with Dean's devotion to his sport, his team, and his students. As a college football coach, sport is his life, which, as for many athletes, means keeping his sexuality to one-night stands and anonymous hookups.
But of course, when he realizes that Jimmy, his one night stand with blue eyes and a pull that makes Dean want to try a second night, is actually Dr. Castiel Novak, the new geology teacher, his sexuality has him in a tailspin.
Cas is a disaster in this fic, and I love it. He's so real and relatable in his heartache and in his need to stand up for what he believes in, even if it breaks his heart. It isn't until one of the football players ends up in the hospital, having tried to kill himself for being gay, that Cas puts down his foot. He's not going to live in the closet and teach young gay men to hate themselves.
Dean struggles with being honest with himself, and coming out is not an easy or painless process when you're a public figure, but maybe for Cas, and for his students, it's worth it.

Lavender Fireflies
Lavender Fireflies by casblackfeathers (@casblackfeathers) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 28.5k
Lavender Fireflies Camp is possibly Castiel’s final chance to mend his troubled relationship with his daughter. After an ugly divorce and a nine-to-five job that only further distanced him from Claire, his sister — Anna — suggests spending two weeks camping with Claire. Castiel sees this as his opportunity to bring his daughter closer to him. He had not anticipated meeting a charming firefighter, Dean, on the first day and becoming instantly enchanted by him. Still, Castiel can’t help but feel disappointed when Dean seems to change his mind about them. Usually, the hippy, kumbaya shit that Sammy digs so much is a hard pass for Dean. But coming to Lavender Fireflies Camp wins big brownie points for allowing him to spend time with his brother and his daughter Emma. The last thing Dean expects to happen is to find sex on a stick and everything his dreams are made of in the guy with messy dark hair and blue-as-fuck eyes he meets there. Dean is immediately smitten. Too bad that being a jump-the-gun kinda guy, the first thing Dean assumes is that the redhead camping with Cas is his wife. Then he makes everything a fuckton more complicated for everyone, y’know, Winchester style.
Maybe it makes me a broken record, but I’ll never get tired of saying that we’re the luckiest fandom when it comes to fanfic. At any time, we can open ao3 and get an entire novel's length fic that pulls us into another world where we can spend some time reading about our favorite characters falling in love.
Lavender Fireflies is one of those fics. Told in hues of purple, this fic brings us into a story where Dean and Cas are two adorable single dads doing their best to bond with their daughters, and in Cas’s case, salvage his relationship with his after a rocky divorce. While neither of them are expecting the other, their meet-cute is sweet, and both of them walk away crushing hard, until Dean meets Anna, and immediately assumes she’s Cas’s wife. What follows is Dean trying to keep his growing feelings for Cas from getting stronger, all while Cas decides to drop his walls and see if Emma’s handsome dad might want to kiss him back. They find themselves in increasingly adorable situations, and of course, work out their misunderstanding, and by the end, you’re rooting for all of them to be the little family they are destined to be.

Virga(e) by shineforthee (@shineforthee) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 71K
First, before anything, there was want. In one version of this story, Dean Winchester hasn't stopped moving since the day his father died. He hunts across the country but always comes back to California with the half-hearted hope of visiting Sam at Stanford, and an endless, restless, ceaseless pull to the desert. In one version of this story, Dean Winchester finds himself in the scorched heat of a Death Valley summer, on a hunt for a ghost. Or a purpose. Or an answer to the question that’s been tugging at his tendons for as long as he’s lived. In one version of this story, all Dean Winchester has ever done is want, and all Castiel has ever done is wait.
This fic is high concept and absolutely beautiful. It will haunt you and possibly give you an existential crisis.
Stanford Era Dean finds himself in the desert, unable to walk away from the mystery of a creature trapped there. But it's not the mystery, but the pull of the man, that makes it impossible for Dean to walk away.
When I tell you this fic is just beautifully and intricately done with meticulous research and attention to detail, I'm not overstating it. The desert is an entire character in this fic. The mystery of what is happening to Dean and Cas is compelling. But most of all, there are these absolutely gorgeous moments that resonate so deeply I almost had to put the phone down and walk around the block.
The ending and the resolution the fic comes to is really novel. I thought it was a really clever concept and I found myself tempted to page back to chapter 1 and start all over again.

Another Kind of Memory
Another Kind of Memory by FriendofCarlotta ( @friendofcarlotta) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 45k
Since a traumatic incident six years ago, Castiel Novak’s face has been disfigured by a scar. He’s resigned himself to being someone people can barely stand to look at, let alone love. Except his heart doesn’t seem to have gotten the message. When Dean Winchester takes over the convenience store down the street from Castiel’s bookshop, Castiel falls helplessly in love with his new neighbor. To make matters worse, Castiel’s sister Anna is also interested in Dean. Believing that Dean could never love him, Castiel decides to help Anna win his heart instead.
If there's one thing that I absolutely love (and by love, I mean it occasionally makes me want to bash their heads together) it's when Dean and Cas are convinced that they're not good enough for the other one to love. So while I was reading this fic, I definitely wanted to bash some heads together (but always with the utmost love in my heart).
In this fic, we have the dueling cases of the low self-esteem and self-worth. You have Dean, who's convinced that no one will ever want him for a real relationship, only for the short-term fun, and you have Cas, who's convinced that the prominent scar on his face (gotten in a truly tragic moment) makes him unlovable and undesirable--especially to someone as outgoing and attractive as Dean. Despite those feelings, the two strike up an easy friendship--at least until Anna, Cas' sister, develops a crush on Dean, and Dean finds a love letter written by Cas to him... except Dean thinks that Anna wrote the letter.
What follows is a series of revelations, both for Dean and Cas, as they both start to discover the value that they have to other people. Cas also has to go on a journey of self-discovery and self-love (and NOT the fun kind; the kind that comes on a therapist's couch) but it's worth it to see how Dean and Cas come together at the end. (And it's especially worth it to see how Cas finally gets all of the love that he's been denying himself for so long.)

Healing Hands
Healing Hands by MandalaRose (@a-mandala-rose) Rating: Explicit Word count: 16k
“You’re right. I’m a dick, but I’m not that kind of dick.“ Dean’s had his eye on the hot, sex-haired owner of Healing Hands Spa & Gym for months now. If sex-hair, stunning blue eyes, and hands that send Dean’s thoughts nose-diving for the gutter (Dean’s thoughts are considering buying a summer home there at this point) weren’t enough, Castiel is also smart, funny, and sassy as hell. Dean’s crushing hard, but when Cas catches him sneaking his photo from across the gym and assumes the worst, will he lose any chance with the man before he even gets up the nerve to ask him out?
When I saw the tag chubby!castiel I immediately grabbed this fic and read everything in one sitting. I’m all for body positivity and I think there should be more fics with curvy, full, thick-body Destiel out there.
Plus, this features hand!kink and has a really great author writing this. What more could you want?
At the beginning of this fic, both Dean and Cas already have a major crush on each other. But Dean is a client and both think the other simply wouldn’t be interested in the other.
That’s, of course, until Dean snaps a photo of Castiel to show Charlie and, because of Castiel’s body type, Castiel just assumes the worst.
Surely you can expect them to work things out in the end, but until then you can enjoy the ride of this light-hearted, cute, little fic.
