#lets do some math here. im applying to 5 programs for a phd and i have 2 degrees that i have to send out as official transcripts#so that's already like 30 dollars per school. so 150 basline. plus application fees#the 1st uni i applied to had no fee. the canadian one is 125 Canadian dollars so 95 usd#then 38 dollars for one us uni and fucking 70 dollars for the other us uni#and idk if the last uni has a fee but it would prob be like 25 pounds so 30 usd#so thats what fucking#353 dollars assuming the last uni doesn't have a fee. jesus.#the fucking 70 dollar one fucking gets me tho but that application is also the most fucking annoying one. u have to individually input a#bunch of info rather than just submitting a cv. fucking stupid#and its like. they might not even accept me so like wtf#one school is wanky and prestigious. another program is highly competitive bc its for only one position. another i wont kno if the lab has#the funding for a student until like april. and then idk abt the us schools. the 70 dollar one is also fuck off kinda prestigious#but the other seems kinda more chill? so idk i just want to b accepted somewhere pls.#also i need to ask for letters of recommendation. its so annoying. in the uk and Canada they only want 2 but in the us its 3#ugh. ill b so glad when this bullshit is over with#at this point idk where i want to go really. they all have pros and cons. the canadian would b kinda rad bc i would b an international#students but also not very far from where i grew up and i miss the snow and the trees a lot. its literally like 3hrs from where i did my#undergrad lmao. oh god i shouldnt think abt it like that or it might dissuade me from going there lol#idk idk idk the us schools would prob give me the most info school wise bc rhe us system is kinda brutal#and i could fuck around forever and establish nasa connections. but idk i also wanna go back to the uk#even tho i would b a huge pain in the ass with all the visa bullshit. ugh. whatever it doesnt even matter rn#bc no one has accepted me yet#unrelated

Hi Celta, how sure are we that Meghan graduated with an International Relations degree? The way she dresses in this faux royal tour of Nigeria shows she lacks cultural awareness. She's so inappropriately dressed, showing open shoulders, peekaboo tummy, and slits up to there. Plus, she's wearing block colours whereas the Nigerian women are multi-colourfully bright in their traditional clothing; our late Queen would have fit right in with them with her bright colours and floral dresses!
UK royal ladies, when they visit other countries, always wear clothing that respect the culture of those countries. Just look at how Princess Catherine dresses when they visited Pakistan or Malaysia or even non-conservative countries like Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
I guess this is the difference between class and crass. Meghan just doesn't seem to care to present herself appropriately. How can you be a royal like this? Thank God she's no longer one.
I saw a short clip of video when they were offered food on a plate by a little girl (who was part of the welcoming party I think) and Meghan didn't even acknowledge the girl or the food; she simply turned away while still holding Harry's hand, and pulling him away with her. How rude! She just does not have manners. Again, did she really have an International Relations degree? If I were Northwestern University, I would be so embarrassed to see my alumni behaving this way.

I do not know if Meghan a) graduated, and b) what her degree was. I have heard so many conflicting stories that I now need solid proof (eg an academic transcript) before I believe anything about her university education. If she did graduate with that degree, then I think we can all agree that she learnt nothing from the course.
I think saying that Meghan lacks cultural awareness is very kind of you. I agree, I just would have phrased it as 'Meghan does not care about her host country and its customs/culture/food and has no interest in learning about them'. Your way is much nicer than mine. :)
Meghan clothing and behaviour was revolting on that tour. It was clearly a trip that was all about her and how much flesh she could flash, and not an iota about Nigeria. As you said, other people on visits (royals and diplomats etc) manage to dress appropriately and behave politely, but that is obviously too much effort for Meghan.
At least the only person she embarrassed this time was herself, because, as you said, she is no longer a working royal.

Dialect notes! Dialect notes! Dialect notes!
Because I missed my calling in academic research, I've spent a non-zero amount of time going down rabbit holes on early North American dialect for Along The Northern Heights. Is it worth doing all this research for a fanfiction of a PBS kids show from 20 years ago? Well it gives me considerable amounts of joy to write, so yes.
Anyway! I want to share a massive infodump, because writing gives me goodfeels and so does sharing! Please let me know if I am inaccurate or wrong about anything. I am not an academic and furthermore I do not want to spread misinformation.
MASSIVE WORD BLOCK UNDER THE CUT
A Pregame With Disclaimers About "Good" English
The history of Modern English is rife with Big Oof moments, and I'm not just talking about The Great Vowel Shift or Noah Webster deciding that the "u" in "colour" was silly. Especially in the late 18th century, there was a push to make accents more uniform and to establish a single "Good" English - and there is so much aggression towards what those scholars considered "Bad" English. And, in my extremely uneducated opinion, it seems like it's a conveniently moving target, just like "whiteness." In the context I'm in when writing, it positively reeks of shitting on any of the world's population groups that aren't Southeastern England. And, being from the United States, I know all too well the absolute shit that's been lobbed at AAVE for not being "Good" English.
This "Good" vs "Bad" way of looking at dialect is reductive, destructive, and boring, and I think it goes without saying I don't condone it in the slightest.
A Further Pregame With Received Pronunciation, or RP
the "generic" British dialect many of us outside the UK think of when we think of a British accent (a shame, I think, because the UK is so dialect-diverse and there are some absolute bangers on that damp island!) There are certainly a myriad of reasons for this, but probably the most common reasons/claims I've heard through my life are
A) 19th-century upper-class British folk wanting to have a more separate dialect from the other classes.
B) associations with the way the Royal Family has spoken English since at least Queen Victoria (a generic reasoning that we see happen along populations: imitating those in power)
C) 20th-century RP became "generic" in a similar way that the broad North American dialect* now associated with the United States and, to some degree, Canada, did - that is, it was further developed and use encouraged as the easiest to understand when recorded and played-back on period audio recording equipment (specifically radio and television.)
*a timeout is to be made here for the so-called Mid-Atlantic dialect at the dawn of "talkies" and early Hollywood. Its the delightful way of talking you'll hear in old black-and-white movies: slightly musical cadence, and combining the broad north american dialect with a bit of the non-rhoticity of RP. This dialect was mostly affectation and as anyone with living American relatives born before 1960 can tell you, mid-20th-century Americans largely did not speak it in normal settings.
Now, all of this is to say, RP as a dialect doesn't really appear until mid-19th century (although it would seem the loss of rhoticity we so associate with RP was a gradual shift starting in the very end of the 18th century.) Furthermore, the ways that we, 21st-century denizens, know RP don't come into their own until the 20th century and proliferation of audio-based mass media.
On to My Actual Point : 18th Century American Dialect (non-AAVE)*
*I make this distinction because the history of AAVE is a massive topic all on its own and I feel even less qualified to speak on it
It can't be ignored that the base strata making up Anglo-American speech patterns would have been as varied as where the original settlers/invaders came from, nor can it be ignored that the American Colonies were made up of more than just Anglo-Saxon descendants. Even back then, they were a mosaic of cultural interaction, which is why Thomas Paine declared America (at least the white part) a European, and not British, culture.
That being said, multiple primary sources indicate that the dialect of Anglo-Americans at the late 18th/very early 19th century was similar to "well-bred" Londoner dialect of the time (assuming there's enough of a distinction here from broad Southeastern UK,) and that this particular dialect was broadly spoken with less regional variance than the family of dialects in the UK.
This is made clear in vol 3 of Timothy Dwight's Travels in New-England and New-York, a collection of letters sent to colleagues in England:
"I shall not, I believe, offend against either truth or propriety if I say, that the English language is in this country pronounced more correctly than in England. I am not, indeed, sanguine enough to expect, that you will credit the assertion, nor that you will believe me to be a competent judge of the subject. Still I am satisfied that the assertion is true. That you may not mistake my meaning, I observe, that by a correct pronunciation I intend that of London; and, if you please, that of well-bred people in London."
(Dwight, Timothy. Travels in New-England and New-York vol 3 p 265)
Now in context he is only speaking of the New England region, and he does make a disclaimer here that he's not "a competent judge" of the subject, and we are certainly ignoring his hope that he won't be cited on the matter. But, his observation holds true from other primary accounts, especially William Eddis' Letters From America, which are composed of his observations (mostly of Maryland gentry) from 1769 to 1777. (His letters also happen to be an invaluable primary source for observations on culture and political commentary on the rising crisis between the colonies and Britain, from the perspective of a loyal well-to-do British subject.)
On the uniformity of language, Eddis has this to say:
"In England, almost every county is distinguished by a peculiar dialect; even different habits, and different modes of thinking, evidently discriminate inhabitants, whose local situation is not far remote; but in Maryland, and throughout the adjacent provinces, it is worthy of observation, that a striking similarity of speech universally prevails; and it is strictly true, that the pronounciation of the generality of the people has an accuracy and elegance, that cannot fail of gratifying the most judicious ear."
(Eddis, William. Letters from America, Historical and Descriptive. p 59)
if the odd comma placements are making it hard to read, you're not alone. 18th century writing is choc-full of what we might today consider run-on sentences, comma splices, or just generally cumbersome. Here's me paraphrasing as best I can:
"In England, almost every county has its own dialect, habits, and modes of thinking, noticeably different inhabitants that don't live very far from each other; but in Maryland and adjacent provinces, there is a notable similarity of speech, and its absolutely true that the generalized accent/pronunciation has an accuracy and elegance that won't fail to gratify a discerning ear."

All this background I'm giving comes to this point: late 18th-century "well-bred" Londoner is the dialect I have chosen to loosely base what I write in Along The Northern Heights. I listen to alot of Simon Roper's work on youtube regarding the topic. I would say these two are probably the most valuable videos on the accent.

He makes disclaimers about not being formally qualified to speak on linguistics, and I would be remiss to not pass along those disclaimers.
That being said, what's in my mind is pastiche of that, the local "country" (read: appalachian) dialect in rural Virginia, the dialect work used in Turn:Washington's Spies and HBO John Adams, as well as some of the dialect you hear in PBS Masterpeice's Poldark, and various media I've watched/read from Living History re-enactors about reconstructing dialect.

Since I've made it a headcanon feature that James Hiller has a bit of a brogue that he feels pressured to correct, but slips into when he is excited or upset, I'd like to dig more into less-"proper" dialects of the time, and, if possible, the less-proper Philly accent. For shits and giggles, here's what I suspect is a dramatization of a modern-day Philly accent:

Honestly? Hearing both of these warms the cockles of my heart, because my late grandparents (especially grandma. *Especially* grandma) spoke with a Baltimore accent, which has similarities with the Philly accent. My aunts and uncles all speak it; its been normalized and blended with a virginia rural accent in mine (I say wadder, my grandma said wooder. I say toosdaye, my grandma said toosdee. I say ahn, grandma said ooowan. I say y'all, grandma said all youse/all you. I say "d'jeet," she said d'jeet, and you can pull d'jeet from my cold dead hands.)
In addition, you have the modern-day "High Tide" dialect of Okracoke, the Carolina Brogue.

trouble with Carolina Brouge, which is disappearing, is that its got too much modern-day southeastern drawl to really use as a basis for an 18th century Philly boy. Though it does seem like drawing out the "A" in water into wooder/woader is a commonality.

Favourite dinosaur/prehistoric animal?
I love a lot of them, especially now that we have such a greater understanding of what they looked like. Floofy dinos are just extra excellent. But I think I'll have to crown Spinosaurus. It's a bit of a meme dinosaur by now. Every discovery changes our perception of what it looked like, and people still debate if it was aquatic or not. (I'm team aquatic all the way) I mean look at it. It's fucking iconic.
I once started a short story set in a future in which humans had long since reengineered some dinosaurs, and a pirate crew had a raft-style boat that was powered by a Spinosaurus. They'd pierced grommets in the sail to clip ropes to her back. They also had pet Troodons on the crew. Sadly I lost steam and inspiration and never went anywhere with the story. I still adore Spinosaurus.

If I could just indulge myself, Francois Renee de Chateaubriand. Absolutely crazy guy. Lived through the French revolution, Napoleon, went to the Americas, wrote early romantic works, mostly known for his autobiography memoirs from beyond the grave. He's truly a blorbo from my history. Look at this :
“A moral character is attached to autumnal scenes; the leaves falling like our years, the flowers fading like our hours, the clouds fleeting like our illusions, the light diminishing like our intelligence, the sun growing colder like our affections, the rivers becoming frozen like our lives—all bear secret relations to our destinies.”
BUT if I had a perfect translator and could quizz to my heart's content, and had actual intentions of being useful, I'd talk to a Gaulois. Probably Vercingetorix or an earlier leader from Celtic France.
We know SO little about these people. They're my ancestors, and we have almost no knowledge of their beliefs and practices. We have some (most likely wrong and slanderous) accounts from (the invading) romans. And archeological finds. But stuff like Cernunos/Karnonos (for who I wrote one of my fav short stories ever) is known from one pillar, one cauldron, and nothing else! We don't even know what he was the god of!
It's so infuriating to me. If I could quizz a Gaulois, I'd write the most detailed and comprehensive guide to their belief, their knowledge of others tribes, and their everyday life. I'd want to know about their gods, their myths, and their superstitions.

Japan... Sad hours... I live in the UK, right. Scotland. And I had managed to get a work holiday visa to Japan! It's free to get, you just have an age limit. So I saved money (excruciatingly slowly, the UK being what it is), and finally planned it all. Got the visa (in Paris), got 400£ worth of shots (encephalitis, japanese encephalitis, rabies...), and was ready to apply for a Mongolian visa and start buying train tickets.
You see, I was going to do Scotland > London > Paris > Berlin > Warsaw > Vilnius > Tallinn > St Petersburg > Moscow > Irkutsk (on the transsiberian!!) > Ulaanbaatar > Beijing > Shanghai > Osaka
All train and bus, except for the last leg, which is a ferry.
When I was getting my second of three injections (always rabies + another and rabies turned me into a shivering plank of wood omg) the doctor was like... 'are you sure you want the last round done? There's this worrying cough developing in China at the moment...'
January 2020, RIP.
And then I aged out of the Japanese visa. And then Russia went to war and ruined its reputation forever. I spent a lot of time trying to make myself see that COVID had far worse repercussions for countless people, and I got off easily. But this was the culminations of a decade of dreaming and many years of planning and saving. It was a major bummer.

That's definitely too hard. I don't have a favourite. Maybe it's because I studied art. Not a matter of taste, but a matter of exposure. I've seen a lot of styles and a lot of artists and there is no one work I can point to and say "this is it". The inspiration art folder I keep is extremely varied itself. Variety is the spice of life.

Here in Canada you actually have to go through two years of therapy before you can get any degree of gender affirming care covered. The waitlist for government-approved therapists in my province used to be an additional two years, but the doctor heading the program retired so now it's effectively indefinite. You can seek out a therapist privately, but it sort of defeats the purpose, and the province only really covers bottom surgery. Anybody who can afford to have surgery done privately could circumvent any further barriers pretty easily.
To be fair I don't know what the situation looks like in the UK, but I'm willing to bet that people who are inclined towards therapy as a treatment option aren't barred from it, outside of maybe cultural mores against trans people. I'd also be willing to bet that it would be less prohibitively expensive than a procedure that costs tens of thousands of dollars. Correct me if I'm wrong.
it's hard for me as a biased layman to know exactly where the line should be drawn, but two years of dysphoria-focused therapy seems completely reasonable to me. for something that's going to affect the entire rest of your life... two years is a blip. two years is nothing.
waitlist times are a nightmare. im big in favour of bringing waitlist times down. if i had my way the waitlist would b two days long. but alas
it's not that anyone is BARRED from therapy... but when i asked for it i was told "we dont do conversion therapy", discharged from the gender clinic with no further help, and told "don't think so much" 🙃 which wasted... i suppose you could call it 10 years of my life, really. and counting! im back on the list and will its even longer now - my doctor told me at least 3 years before i'll even see a first appointment. therapy is not required, not offered, all nhs therapy ive ever had sucked ass, and there's no standard of psychological treatment for dysphoria.

my nickname is m, i'm 23 years old! i'm an ambivert (who acts a bit more like an introvert these days), enfp, enneagram 4. contrary to what people around me think, i'm a slytherin 🙈 i used to be a lot more shy than i am now, but i've somehow naturally overcome that through activities in my school's drama club. i'm both a cat and a dog person and would love to own one of each in the near future! i'm an animal lover in general, i'm especially obsessed with ducks, pandas and penguins for some reason 🙈 regarding my appearance, i'm pretty basic, i have brown eyes and brown wavy hair, i'm around 165 cm tall and i'm a bit on the chubbier side.
i'm currently getting my degree in foreign language teaching, i speak 3 languages fluently and i'm planning to start learning french in the near future. besides languages, i'm really interested in art and art history, astronomy, archaeology and psychology. if i wasn't a teacher, i'd probably be a speech therapist or i'd just live off of drawings/paintings i make or stuff i craft.
i change my hobbies almost every week, right now, i spend most of my time playing video games. i've really been into sims lately (i mostly build stuff because i find the gameplay really repetitive). as soon as i graduate, i'd like to start travelling more often, some of the countries i'd like to visit are italy, france, the uk, japan, switzerland, south korea and new zealand.
my ideal partner is someone who would enjoy spending a lot of their free time with me, someone who would not be afraid of physical affection because i love love LOVE to give and receive cuddles and hugs! i'd also like to have a partner who would respect me and my interests and would always support me in everything i do. an ideal date would either be a picnic with all of our favorite food or going out for hot drinks (hot choco or tea) and then later watching something at the cinema.
my bias is tae, he somehow caught my eye the moment i was introduced to bts, i love how he seems to have a really cold exterior but on the inside he's the cutest fluffball that exists! i don't really have a bias wrecker, or rather, i change my bias wrecker every week because i just love all of the boys and i have a different special connection with each and every one of them.

Of course he intends to propose but he has lost the ring and you laugh because this is Namjoon.
Once you do agree to be his lover, he can't take his hands of you, he's always all over you
Infact it gets irritating when after coming home from the gym he hugs you and you have to take a bath
He also has a whole wall with your artwork only one work not done by you is put up it's the painting you liked and the room is decorated with your souvenirs and his pokemon collection and your photos
Every winter you both make ductan sonyeondan and every year he manages to break the mold.
In conclusion you have a person who not only supports your life but is glad because it reduces his guilt even if on occasion despite never admitting later he does get jealous
Now you have a person who is going to turn every part of your relationship into songs ... sometimes you wonder if he loves you more or the song writing content you provide him
But who cares sometimes you know love and sometimes you dont but as long as there are snacks with your tea you are willing to learn about it.

No but you don’t understand how fucking excited i am for HOTD!! And Ewan Mitchell could seriously be so proud about getting the best role ever. I haven’t read the book but i did watch a ton of youtube videos explaining it and i gotta say that out of all the characters Aemond seems the most interesting one out of all. His story is so badass. Also im very HYPEEEEED to see Aemond mount Vhagar for the first time and based on the clip they will show it HOTD even though it didn’t look like Ewan in that scene, it’s probably a different actor for that part because Aemond was still a child at that time.

yeah leo ashton is playing young aemond in that scene! im so so excited for HOTD ive been looking forward to it for so long now, there's so many characters that i've fallen in love with (BAELA<33) but ofc i am most excited to see aemond for obvious reasons!!
i know he'll probably be one of the more outright villainous characters but thats okay bc i love a good villain (esp when its ewan) :-)
i've seen him be compared to joffrey loads but i don't think they're too similar. ofc they're both ruthless antagonists but if im being honest, aemond is who joffrey wanted to be lmfaoo. also i feel like his character will be explored more and potentially presented as sympathetic to a degree, especially when he's younger which will be v interesting.
spoilers / alleged leaks below!!!!!
i've heard that in the show aemond and helaena are portrayed as being really close (some think either they're in love or he loves her - dk how to feel about that looll) which will be really interesting if it's true, especially after blood and cheese. from what i remember, f&b didn't rly describe their relationship which i would've liked but trust the show will deliver <33
also aside from aemond's relationship with helaena and her children, his relationship with alys rivers could also make him potentially more sympathetic and "grey" (even if he's leaning towards the darker end of the greyscale lmaoo) which im excited to see in later seasons!!!!!

How do you define a non-replica?
So, a replica is a production that's licensed by RUG (= Really Useful Group = ALW's company) to perform CATS with full official regalia: that is, they are allowed to use Gillian Lynne's choreo and Napier's designs and so on, but they are also obliged to follow the official rules for whatever a current official production is meant to do.
However. 'Current' here means 'current at the time the licence was issued'.
Shiki (Japan) is replica in that it's fully licensed from RUG. But since they started in 1983 and have followed their own design path since then (with occasional external influences from more Western productions), they are actually more different from more modern replica productions than some modern non-replicas.
Similarly (though more recently), the Oasis production got its licence just before the UK and US revivals, and that licence is apparently still current, so it preserves some pre-revival performance traditions (and is, so far, immune to the new rules about makeup that came in with the new international and asia tours).
Other replica productions of the 80s and 90s (like OG Vienna, Amsterdam/Paris, Zurich/Euro, Hamburg) also developed their own traditions - and the Australasian traditions (starting in the late 1990s) persisted until the 2014 asia tour.
And that's a pertinent example: the australasian productions were not a continual production, so they had to renew their license for each 'season' (2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2022, etc). So they reflect the vagaries of ALW's revival trends, even while their production company (and often a lot of their cast) stay the same.
A non-replica, otoh, may be influenced by the traditional/replica productions, but they might get into trouble if their designs and choreo are too recognisable. For example, the 2013 and 2018 mexico revivals were a) based on the original Latin American productions in the 1990s - some of the cast and production team returned to lead the designs - and b) in the case of 2018, they were adapted to include elements of hte Broadway revival.
The end result was something that's much more recongisable as an extra-saturated version of Gillian/Napier's production, but. Though I don't know the terms of their contract. I know that the fact that they had that much of the original production gave them less freedom in terms of their contract, and that the 2018 production was obliged to close down in preparation for the release of teh 2019 film.
I would say that's symptomatic of ALW/RUG's increasing pedantic control over the appearance of The Brand of CATS and resistance to having any alternative versiosn around, but. That attitude isn't really new. According to some conversations I've had with old CATS alumni, 'omg ur doing ur own thing??? STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!!!' was basically the reason that the Hamburg production (1986–2001) was closed down.
and RUG's insistence on THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE PRODUCTION comes in waves: most of the original productions and their various traditions were shut down in the late 90s and early 00s, and then, after regional US productions started to burgeon in the late 00s and on until the revivals, they cracked down on non-replicas again in the wake of the European and Broadway revivals.
tl;dr the definition of non-replica is about licensing and degree of freedom/control, with originality as a secondary consideration.

ooo hm im not sure!! ive thought about their degrees (thats the same as majors right? a major in america is basically ur degree subject in the uk i think?) a little bit but its pretty basic...probably as always i am projecting with remus when i say i always put him in smthn like politics/philosophy/history (have seen him doing classics degrees in fics also!!). sirius i find a bit more difficult to pin down...in a muggle setting i sort of imagine some of his a levels being dictated by what his friends (james) take but when i was picking a degree for him in aofgwm i ended up going for art history...although really i never quite settled on anything that screamed sirius to me i think i like the art thing the most :-//
career-wise im even less certain...i know in fics i hate hate hate when sirius is written as an auror/trainee auror because frankly he would never b a cop ever lol and depicting him as some sort of punk and then making him work for the ministry is baffling to me. and remus i guess ive always accepted the teacher thing because of canon?? although in a muggle au it might have to be higher education rather than secondary school because i just dont think he would do that to himself. id say journalism or something in the research field also maybe but i really am projecting now xx a critic of some sort would be a fun job for both of them!! have read fics where sirius works as a critic/smthn like that for music publications which is cool :-)) but im not sure!! i feel like any field can work if the characterisations are good i guess i just gravitate towards the kinda stuff im into :-))

FEATURE INTERVIEW
Thank you so much for the opportunity to shoot your feature images, you had such a vibrant energy! It was very refreshing to work with you, you were so receptive to the ideas in the room and you were very generous with your Hennessy. Despite having a million things to do in a short amount of time, we successfully shot your images, and your energy remained constant. What keeps you grounded?
Thank you for having me. I had a great time at the shoot. Everyone was nice, everyone was professional, the atmosphere was beautiful and the energy was right. I stay grounded by surrounding myself with the right people and understanding that I’m a human being first before anything else. Treating people with respect is very important to me, no matter who I am or how much success I amass. Going through life and going through this industry with that understanding helps me stay grounded in more ways than one. 
You recently made your debut at New York Fashion Week. How has this experience been, and how does fashion influence you?
The debut at New York Fashion Week was amazing. I had a great time and I learned a lot. Obviously fashion is a different industry than where I started and where I have my expertise, but learning about and joining into a whole new industry is something else entirely and it’s been a really nice experience for me. Working with Michael Philouze has really been helpful and productive, and beyond that it’s just fun because he’s such a great guy. I’ve always been a fashion guy with the way I like to dress up and the way I like to present myself when I make appearances. I like to be edgy because I believe as an artist, you cannot be regular in anything you do, or at least in most of the things you do. You have to stand out and you have to look the part whenever you step out. That’s very key to me. As much as I like to keep things simple and dress comfortable, I understand that as an artist, I have to look the part. That has always guided the way I approach things, the way I dress up, and the way I make music sometimes too. 
What’s something you always bring with you when you travel?
It changes from a range of things, usually it’s speakers but right now it’s my Nintendo Switch. I use it to pass the time when I’m alone or when I just need to relax. You know life on the road can be very demanding and stressful so sometimes I like to just take my mind away from it.  
What is your favorite men’s cologne? 
I am a cologne freak. It’s an obsession I started like a year or two ago. Since then I’ve been collecting a lot of fragrances. I love to smell good everywhere whether it’s my house, my body, my car… A good scent is a way to make people feel comfortable and at ease around you. My favorite men’s cologne has got to be Clive Christian Addictive Arts. It’s such a beautiful, rich, fresh smell. It smells like wealth, comfort and ease. It’s so sexy, I really love it. I only wear it on special occasions. I have a lot of favorites, but that one is just special to me right now.
What’s one article of clothing or accessory that holds a lot of meaning to you?
I’ll say anything that goes on the hands - rings, watches, bracelets. People pay a lot of attention to hands - a lot more than we think. When the attention goes there, just to your hands, it shows attention to detail. Those accessories stand out, no matter what you’re wearing. Also my diamond grills, it’s just such a great accessory when I’m dressing up because I could literally wear anything, and still look like a superstar. I could just be in a tank top, some nice pants and shoes with bracelets and a beautiful watch, but then the grills when I smile, people are like “oh he’s a superstar” and that’s such a vibe. Those accessories mean a lot to me right now when I’m dressing up. They’re important to my look and it’s imperative that I have those on me when I go out.
Your fashion sense has garnered attention for challenging gender norms. What message do you hope to convey through your fashion?
I can be very fluid when it comes to fashion because I believe that there are some outfits that are just not gender restrictive. Anyone can wear them as long as they just give off that vibe. There are some outfits that just look right on anyone no matter who you are. I really don’t care about who should wear this or that. I feel like if I look at something and I think it will look good on me, I will wear it as long as I’m comfortable in it and that’s what matters the most. Sometimes I want to go for the laidback, simple, calm vibe, but I’m a creative. You don’t expect me to just step out looking like a regular Joe you know. One message I like to get across - things like music, fashion, and art, generally, that’s freedom, so just feel free to explore. As long as you’re not hurting anybody, do what you like.   
How is your creativity disrupting culture and pushing boundaries?
Right now Afrobeats is doing it’s thing and its been doing that for the past 3-4 years. I’m just glad that my generation is the one that basically introduced Afrobeats to these new heights it’s been achieving. My creativity as an artist is one thing that keeps me pushing my boundaries all over - beyond Africa, Naija, Afrobeats, and African music. I wouldn’t say that I make Afrobeats all the time. I make pop. I make R&B. I do all genres of music but I always like to make sure that that identity, that Afrobeats identity, is still maintained somehow in the music. I feel like that’s what’s most important - as long as people know where you’re from and who you are, it doesn’t matter what kind of music you make. Your identity is very important and that’s one thing that’s kind of helped keep us in the game and also helped us to break boundaries in the industry. We’re staying true and showing originality in our music. I’m speaking not just for myself, but for my peers as well. It’s been beautiful so far and I’m just grateful.  
How has your cultural background as a Nigerian influenced your artistry and sound?
I was just talking about my cultural background as a Nigerian and as a Yoruba boy from the Yoruba tribe, my identity, staying true, and it’s really the same thing I just mentioned… My background has heavily influenced my artistry and my sound. I grew up in Abeokuta in the Ogun state. It’s a relatively sleepy town in the southwestern area of Nigeria. I didn’t do much - it was just home, school and church. I was just writing music, writing poems, reading books, and that actually really helped me a lot when I was transitioning from a songwriter to an artist. I started as a studio runner, or a studio rat as some people would call us, cleaning up the studios and helping people make music and record. From there I started helping people write. So my background really helped me to stay grounded and just learn to appreciate the creative process. The creative process in music involves a lot of you just being in your zone, locked in, and just doing your thing. Growing up, that’s mostly what I was doing. 
In my music you always hear my Yoruba - you’ll be like okay this one’s the Yoruba boy, this one’s the Afrobeats artist, etc. Even when I’m making R&B, I try to use my local dialect and make it pop. You’ll hear it… We like to exclaim a lot, we’re very dramatic as a tribe. So in our expressions you’ll hear the occasional “Ho!” “Yee!” “Ha!” in between lines and it’s those little minute details that have people wondering - where is this guy from? And then “oh he’s from this part of the world, that’s interesting” and it goes from there. So I think originality is always a good way to maintain your artistry and break boundaries. 
You were on the soundtrack for Black Panther, what significance does this have for you?
Being on the soundtrack for Black Panther was such a huge moment for me in my career. It really solidified all the hard work I had been doing up until that point and it meant a lot to me. Being a part of a movie that is so important to black culture was a huge honor for me. So today and until the end of time, I will always be grateful for that opportunity because that is how you really make your mark in history and make sure that you are remembered for life. 
You have collaborated with artists like Madonna, Chris Brown and Ed Sheeran. Who would you love to collaborate with in the near future?
Collaboration has really helped my career thus far. Working with big artists like Madonna, Chris Brown, and Ed Sheeran has been life changing to say the least. One artist that I would really love to collaborate with, and I’ve said it so many times in so many interviews, is Post Malone. Apart from his music, I just love his personality and I love that he’s such an artist in whatever form or shape he takes and whatever he likes. You can just always tell that he is a genuine artist that has a lot of respect for the art and has a lot of respect for people too. As a fan, I’ve watched a lot of videos of him and I’ve seen how he’s relating with people and that just inspires me. No matter what level of success I achieve, it’s always important to stay true to yourself and treat people with respect. I really really admire that about him. He’s true to himself and a true artist.  
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest album “Playboy” and any memorable moments during its creation?
My last album Playboy - that was an era. That was a ride. It was fun. It was a point where my success had reached that global superstar international stage. I was just living in and loving the moment. And I felt you know what? This is the moment where you get out of your head and stop overthinking and just play, just chill and relax. Play boy. Playboy. That’s basically what that word means. In all honesty it could mean all versions, all forms, all definitions of “playboy” that you have in every urban dictionary in the world. It’s just me coming out of my shell to really enjoy the success that I’ve worked so hard for. 
I have a lot of memorable moments, but the one that stands out for me will always be when I was making Peru in San Francisco after I just flew in from Miami. It was a beautiful time. I was with Ghazi and the entire Empire team and we were just all chilling. I got to the studio, he played the beat, and I was like you know what - this is it. I started popping off. It was such an unusual way of recording for me because I never usually just go in the booth and go hard like that. It’s not my style. I usually like to sit, listen, cook up melodies, and write up some lyrics before I try to do any sort of raw take, but that night I just sort of got out of my head for the first time in a long time. I got in the booth and just started singing. I was singing every melody in my head and the song just happened. In like 40 minutes we were done and everyone in the studio knew we had a banger. It was crazy. Such a memorable moment.    
I hear there is some music in the works! Can you tell our audiences what to expect next from Fireboy DML?
It’s been a while and I’m currently working on my next album. It is exciting for one reason - I’m just really excited for my fans that have been with me from the very beginning. I’m not going to say much about this next album, all I’m going to say is that the fans are really going to enjoy it. It just feels good to not just create for yourself, it’s also important to create for the people that have been there with you over the years. I’m finally getting back in that bag and I’m just really excited for that. 
What advice do you have for talented, young artists looking to gain exposure?
It’s always going to be the same when people ask me this question - take your time to find your sound. Once you find your sound, the rest will automatically follow. I’ve realized that music is a very selfish lover. If you’re in it, you’re in it. Stick to it and make sure that you’re giving it all the time and attention you have and everything you’ve got. Before you know it, you’ve found your sound. Once you’ve found your sound, as long as you keep working, everything else falls in place. That’s how it’s been for me and I feel like as a young talented artist, that’s all you need to do. Put yourself in the right frame of mind, find your sound, and the right people will find you. As long as you continue to put yourself out there, put out music of course, and are sure you have your identity and your sound locked in, you’ll be good for life.

So, Today's Skidmarks on the Underpants of Humanity are (26 Feb 2024).....
Would you punt a guess from the cornucopia of British, and beyond news today? Spoilt for choice, perhaps? Well, allow me to help you out then.
Let's begin with the asylum known as Bristol, my adopted, current home city. As I've already written at some length about this in my autobiography 'The Sexual Philanthropist' (out now on Amazon/Kindle - and, 4-star reviewed, by the way), (a) there's little point in repeating it, and (b) I simply cannot be arsed. Suffice to say Bristol is populated by more knobs than Ikea has in its entire UK national warehouse facility. Indigenous Bristolians, by the way, are generally the soundest people you'll find anywhere. You know, good-humoured, easy-going, salt-of-the-earth types who Colston would be proud of if he were alive today, and if it wasn't for the small side issue of slavery, that is. But, we'll not go there, as this was mentioned in yesterday's musings.
No, those I'm referring to are the migrants to this once great city who came here to study for degrees in subjects that result in an 'ology' of one sort, or another, and a myriad of similar fields of study that will enable them to leave university up to their neck in debt for the majority of their lives ahead, and somewhat disappointingly after three, perhaps even four years of non-stop partying, copious drugs, and enough alcohol to float the Bibby Stockholm, they find themselves qualified to serve fries and other sundries in high-end restaurants such as MacDonalds.
Having said that, in all fairness, a great many other people of all ages and walks of life come to reside in Bristol as they've found themselves attracted by national media headlines that extol the many benefits Bristol has to offer, such as the second most expensive city in which to live outside of London, and it's breathtaking public events - such as the Bridewell Riot, the Stokes Croft riot, the random bathing ceremony of Colston's statue, and perhaps by far the greatest public spectacle to be seen in decades - the slow decimation of an entire city centre by a council that's so out of kilter with its population that it's rather like an Ofsted report that tells a school it 'lacks vision', when the school is for the blind. Or, maybe even a broadcaster thinking it would be a brilliant idea to provide a radio service for the stone deaf. Now, I'm by no means a maths genius by a long chalk, but when it comes to the city council on one side of the fence, and its citizens on the other, all three quite simply aren't in any way compatible.
Now, as an isolated case, the city council could be forgiven for its ineptitude and stupidity, if it wasn't for the fact that it's somehow become viral in a way that appears to only infect those who consider themselves better educated than the rest of us poor dopes, and it appears that the better-educated someone is the more of a numpty they turn into because something as simple as common sense seems to evaporate and disappear off into the ether, never to return. Similar to yesterday's spat on Golden Syrup, today it's the turn of Bristol University. Why, you may ask? Because it has decided to remove a dolphin from its logo. Seriously, who even noticed?
I bet students were rocking up to mental health services in their thousands because a minute dolphin on the uni's logo kept them sufficiently awake at night to impact on their studies. Get bloody real! You see, the entire problem boils down to one thing in this city as much as it does everywhere else around the country nowadays, that feelings have overridden plain old common sense, and because that poor little innocent dolphin has connections with Edward Colston the mammal is the victim of the piece. So, taking this lunacy further, let's rule out the sea, boats, and ships, and maybe even demolish the university too so it can be rebuilt in its entirety. Furthermore, every student who passed through the university with a degree should hand it back immediately. Would this then finally satisfy the numptyism for once and all? Well, we can all live the dream, so probably not because the numpties will find something else just as insignificant to focus on.
Sadly, this is a pandemic there is no vaccine for, and if there were, and it was legal, euthanasia would work every time.
